Nagoya Castle and Osaka Castle are typically Japanese,
but prior to Nobunaga's time castles were not majestic.
Nobunaga's seven-story Azuchi Castle was the very first.
Until then, they were one, or two-to-three stories high,
with an emphasis on being a defensive camp.
In fact, the architectural term, "Tenshu,"
meaning "Lord of Heaven," hadn't existed until then.
Unfortunately, Azuchi Castle was burned a few years later.
There were no architectural plans left,
thus details of the castle remain unknown.
Several foreign drawings have been found,
but none with enough detail to be conclusive.
In recent years, excavation studies and research...
have attempted to reconstruct the castle,
but experts theorize that Okayama's Ujo Castle is its replica.
Nonetheless, Nobunaga's Azuchi Castle had a tremendous impact...
on the future of Japanese castles.

I'm grateful!
I'm so grateful!
Nagahama Castle
I am Omi-Nagahama Castle lord, Hashiba Hideyoshi.
I was bestowed with the Asai domain.
I am a lord of a province now.
Wow, I sure have come far!
Lord. Departure preparations are complete.
Oh, Kihachi. I will get two or three more domains.
Yes!
Don't be so formal. We are old friends.
No, you are a lord now. I must not be casual.
You are a good soldier, Kihachi.
You are my left-hand man.
Isn't it supposed to be right-hand man?
No, left. I don't need a right-hand man.
You don't want to be late and irritate His Majesty.
His Majesty is building a castle nearby.
He may want to be close to me.
We will build a new castle on Mt. Azuchi...
and build a castle town superior to Sakai.
Zuiten tells me this direction is favorable from Gifu.
Isn't that right, Zuiten?
Yes.
I can go to Kyoto in a day from Azuchi...
and also to Gifu in a day.
Also, the view of Lake Biwa is exquisite.
I need temporary quarters to move to.
I don't want to inconvenience you, Sakuma.
No, don't be concerned over that, Your Majesty.
It is an honor to have you as our house guest.
When will parts of Nijo Castle be transferred to Azuchi?
It has already begun.
Then I can live there in about two months?
Yes.
Ah, from the summit you can see Hira Hills beyond Lake Biwa.
The sunset will be majestic.
I suggest building a high tower at the summit.
My quarters will be at the summit, not the tower.
Not the hon-maru, but at the summit?
That's right. And, I already have a design in mind.
Here it is.
Ah, it looks higher than five stories.
One, two, three, four, five...
six stories?
From the rock base to the top it is about 40 meters.
40 meters...
Isn't that a bit too high?
Do you think so?
I think it's a bit too high as well.
If it's a tower that's not for dwelling, then five stories is fine,
but a tall and narrow tower at the summit is not safe.
I've sent for carpenters in Kyoto and its vicinity.
They are hand-picked experts.
If there are five stories, there can be six.
Pardon me. Your Majesty, please do not build a six-story tower.
It's not a tower, it is my residence.
Then all the more so.
The roof should be kept to five stories.
That's common to all temples.
I want a castle that no one has seen before.
What's wrong with six stories?
Five stories represent the elements...
of earth, water, fire, wind, and sky.
It is beautiful and a blessing.
It also relates to the Yin-Yang philosophy...
and symbolizes wood, fire, earth, metal and water,
the basis of all good fortune.
Add or subtract one from five, and it brings bad fortune.
Please refrain from building six stories.
Then, we will make it five stories, but have seven in actuality.
Five stories for the five elements,
and the 6th and 7th for me to watch over the land.
Why are you surprised?
I not only set the path for heaven,
but I brought this nation together.
I deserve a castle that can overlook the land.
But a castle at the summit is a big task.
As the person in charge, you must be prepared.
Yes.
But a six-story castle at the summit...
What Zuiten said bothers me, too.
However, we can't change His Majesty's mind.
I wish to report.
Sir Hashiba Chikuzen-no-kami has arrived.
Send him in.
To think Hideyoshi just got here.
Yah, I'm a bit late.
My horse sprained his leg. What a commotion!
His Supremacy gave that chestnut horse to me,
so I think I pampered it too much.
Yah, what a commotion.
You're late!
Forgive me.
What time do you think it is?
Where is His Supremacy?
Quit that 'His Supremacy' thing.
Call him 'Your Majesty!'
You were late, so he went hawking.
You can't trick me.
Such a happy-go-lucky guy.
He was born that way.
Did he really go hawking?
That's right.
You were chosen to be in charge of the territory.
I hope you have some plans ready.
Was His Supremacy really angry?
He was livid.
You may be beheaded tomorrow.
First, show us what you have.
Where did His Supremacy go hunting?
What are you going to do?
I want to go after him and apologize.
He wasn't angry.
Huh?
We lied.
I said we lied.
Sometimes we should shake you up.
Stop it! I was so worried!
You look better when you're angry!
No, I'm not angry.
I heard he plans to build a temple along with the castle.
Have you heard anything from His Majesty?
Yes. Just that it will have a hall and three stories.
Not that. I mean what sect?
I suppose it will be a Zen temple.
I haven't heard anything yet.
I thought he said it would be a temple for him.
A temple for himself? What do you mean?
We will worship him as the doctrine.
Fool! Who said that?!
His Supremacy said that himself.
Something is wrong with your ears. What are you listening to anyway?
It's not a lie.
Why would he build a temple of himself?
Do you think he would do anything so stupid?
Maybe a hundred or two hundred years later,
a temple or shrine may do it for him.
That's how it's supposed to be!
But...
You can believe what you want to.
But, Sir Sakuma, what Hideyoshi is saying sounds familiar.
That can't be!
It can't happen!
1576
Two months later, Nobunaga transferred part of Nijo Castle to Mt. Azuchi...
and used that as his temporary quarters.
Nobunaga had built Nijo Castle for Shogun Yoshiaki.
Something isn't quite right.
It's not what I had imagined.
This structure wouldn't match Lake Biwa.
When you look up from the town,
the castle looks angry, don't you think?
I'm not saying it should be smiling,
but people must be in awe of its beauty.
They must be grateful.
Then the people of Azuchi will look up day and night.
This castle must become their pride and joy.
This looks like a plain old tower.
It's too boorish.
Have it redone.
Yes, Sire.
Only one thing is important.
The summit must represent a dream.
A dream that has never been explored.
Our new church was nearing completion.
Sir Takayama Ukon and others donated money...
to build a church this beautiful.
To think this church is in the heart of the capital.
Lorenso...
It's all due to your work.
I haven't done much.
I wish we could have built a real Catholic church...
like those in Rome, Florence, and Venice.
I wanted the Japanese to see a real church.
Padre... This is the best.
It has to fit with the Japanese taste.
The appearance of the church is not crucial.
But, this is like a pagan church.
If we are going to do it, we should do it right.
God's home isn't just European.
It's wrong to cling to that concept.
Please stop using Italian.
Please speak Japanese.
Okay.
How about lengthening the trap door a little...
and deepen the rock wall overlap?
Yes.
Even if a foe attacked from here,
with a deep overlap, they can't attack all at once.
That's right. Horyu-ji is famous.
I know, an octagon.
You want the door to be octagonal?
No, not that. The summit of the castle.
The next to the last story will be an octagon.
Expand it a little.
Where's the picture I drew?
Wait just a moment.
Didn't I put it there?
Yes, just a moment.
That's not bad. I like the idea of an octagon.
Reporting.
What is it?
There's a messenger from Sir Akechi.
Find out what it's about.
That's Okay. Just let him through.
Reporting.
Shogun Ashikaga Yoshiaki went to Lord Mori Terumoto for help.
Lord Mori has agreed to help the shogun.
Echigo's Uesugi Kenshin and Hongwanji's Kennyo...
have also joined this crusade.
They may all attack the capital in the near future...
with the shogun as their banner.
Has the Mori shown signs of moving?
No, not yet.
What about Hongwanji?
They are still fiercely fighting our army.
Good report. You may leave.
The exiled shogun has reappeared.
We should have beheaded him at Makishima Castle.
It's futile to behead the shogun.
People will curse us for generations to come.
But, why are Mori Teramoto and Uesugi Kenshin supporting the shogun now?
The shogun has no power.
Hongwanji's Kennyo may be pulling the strings from behind.
I will go to Kyoto immediately.
I must settle it with Hongwanji's Kennyo once and for all.
It's encouraging to have Ieyasu as an eastern ally.
It's been some time since I came to Okazaki.
You two are always so close, aren't you?
I am glad to see you.
I was in the area hawking.
It's been so long. I have been waiting for you.
It's nice to know you were waiting for me.
By the way, Nobuyasu...
How is the Takeda army doing?
I heard of small outbursts along the Mino border.
So far they haven't come to our border.
Is that so? The Takeda army still has some power left.
Be on guard.
Gotoku...
Yes?
I'm so busy every day at Hamamatsu Castle.
It's very rare that I can visit Okazaki.
If you have any requests, feel free to let me know.
I'll do whatever I can for you.
I am grateful for your kindness.
But, I am very happy and very thankful to you.
That's good.
It's been a long time.
Kanae, you look well, too.
Yes.
You seem to get younger and younger.
Not at all.
What brings you this way today?
Yah, I was in the neighborhood hawking.
I don't have anything particular in mind.
How are things with you?
Everything is well here in Okazaki.
Good. Nobuyasu has become a fine lord, hasn't he?
Yes.
How about coming to Hamamatsu?
I would like to stay here for awhile longer.
Nobuyasu has to do things alone.
The vassals will frown on him.
Are you saying my presence affects his status?
I didn't say that.
Nobuyasu...
Yes?
Are you troubled by my being here?
No.
Nobuyasu has no problem with my staying here.
You're my wife.
It's not natural for us to live apart in Hamamatsu and Okazaki.
Who caused this to happen? You did My Lord.
Alright. We will discuss this later.
Who beheaded my uncle Imagawa Yoshimoto?
Then, you became the subordinate of the enemy...
and took his daughter as our son's wife.
Enough!
I'm not raising Nobuyasu to be that kind of man!
Forgive us. Please give us more time.
My lady has not been feeling well lately...
and has been unable to sleep at nights.
Her illness has made her unreasonable.
You are suffering all the time.
But, it's embarrassing to live apart.
Have her come to Hamamatsu soon. Okay?
Yes. I'll work on it.
Don't worry. It's all my fault.
Forgive me.
Send my best regards to your father.
I am the bride of the Tokugawa family.
You are my father. I seek your favor.
You're a good child.
Our new church was completed before Nobunaga's castle.
This was due to the work of the Japanese Christians.
This Christian father and son contributed a lot.
Takayama Hida-no-kami was lord of Takatsuki Castle in Settsu.
He had retired and turned it over to his son, Ukon.
It is made beautifully, isn't it?
Yes, it's beautiful. Nothing can compare to it.
I thank you two with all my heart.
No, I didn't do much. You worked very hard.
Yes.
Are you two busy?
Yes, we are at battle now with Settsu's Ikko Sect.
We heard about the new church,
and since we had business in Kyoto, we decided to drop by.
We must quickly return to Settsu.
Please spare a few moments with us.
We would like to serve you some tea.
No, don't bother. We really must leave.
I see...
We just wanted to see how it looked.
We must be going.
How is the battle with the Ikko Sect going?
There are many of them. It is a difficult battle.
Don't ever choose death on your own.
Committing seppuku is the work of the devil.
Ukon, please be careful.
Yes.
May God protect you.
Then, I'll see you again.
Akechi...
Has the shogun made any movements?
No, nothing yet.
You know him well. And you know when he moves.
Don't take your eyes off of him.
When the shogun moves, so will the Mori.
Reporting. The enemy is getting more rifles...
and more of our men are getting injured!
Why is that?! Corner the enemy into Hongwanji!
I'll lead the army! Follow me!
Forward!
Forward!
Blow the horn!
Don't fear the Ikko Sect!
Corner them into Hongwanji!
Forward! Forward!
Your Majesty!
It's just a bruise.
Charge!
Even with his injury,
Nobunaga still cornered them into Hongwanji and halted their food supplies.
We haven't heard anything since Nobunaga left for Azuchi.
He may be busy building his castle.
I heard he is busy battling the Ikko Sect.
Brother only thinks about himself.
Once you're out of sight, you are out of his mind.
That isn't true. Nobunaga thinks of you dearly.
Mother. You just don't know him.
Either that, or you pretend not to see.
My brother just has to get things his way.
Other domains, the nation, too, and gods...
He has no hesitation in taking a life.
Oichi has an ax to grind with Nobunaga.
She will realize one day that she is mistaken.
Where am I wrong? Nagamasa was not wrong.
I am talking about battles in general.
Unless one attacks, he is attacked.
Unless one kills, he is killed.
Who would seek to kill a man?
To survive, it is necessary to fight.
If Asai had defeated Nobunaga, Onabe and I might be dead.
Nobunaga was troubled over the Asai situation.
Think about what he went through as well.
Nobunaga isn't at battle because he loves it.
Yes he is!
Mother, why can't you see that?
Some men are that way.
Onabe agrees, too.
To attack before you are attacked is an excuse!
Some just love to attack.
Oichi? What is wrong?
Lady Oichi...
Brother has my husband Nagamasa's skull...
It can't be...
He does! Give it back to me!
We can't let you enter without His Majesty's consent.
Please.
Open it. Say I ordered you to do so.
Open it. Hurry.
Look to your heart's content.
Nobunaga only took his tea utensils.
Everything else is in here.
Lord Nagamasa...
Lord Nagamasa...
In December of that year,
I was to leave for Kyushu to engage in new missionary work.
So I visited Nobunaga to bid him farewell.
I see...
Thank you for all your help.
The new church in Kyoto has been built.
I meant to visit it someday.
Anytime. Padre Organtino and Lorenso are always there.
I regret that I am busy right now.
Otherwise, I wanted to spend some time with you.
I will be back.
Alright. How is the new church?
Majestic and beautiful. Like a house of God.
It's a dream castle.
A dream castle...
I'm building my own dream castle now.
When will it be completed?
I don't know yet. Three years, maybe even five years.
The entire mountain will be the castle.
I would like to see it soon.
Don't you plan to return to your country?
I will die in Japan.
I love Japan.
Japan is now my country.
Are your parents still alive?
I have forgotten about my family.
I live only for my God.
I will relay God's will to the Japanese.
But isn't love the basis of your Jesus' teachings?
Why must you forget your parents?
We must love only God.
I am a vassal of Jesus Christ. I'm his warrior.
I fight and die for him.
I have no other desire.
I must forsake my family to be equal with others.
How encouraging to have a God you truly believe in.
No.
Instead you learn of your own helplessness,
and you realize how sinful your heart is.
Do you have a sinful heart?
Yes.
It that is so, then there are no good men.
No, there are many good men, but I am sinful.
I have many faults.
It's the truth.
That's why I seek the help of Jesus Christ.
Here, I will give this to you.
No, I'll refrain. That's very valuable to you.
Please accept it.
I have nothing else to offer you.
Please accept this from me.
It wouldn't do me any good to have this.
You can discard it if you wish.
Please...
Then, I will hold onto it.
Yes.
Then...
Have a safe journey.
Yes. I look forward to seeing your dream castle.
A sinful heart...
So everybody, until next time...
To be continued.
To be continued.
