This is a type of art called 'byobu' or folding screen.
It is also called a western byobu.
This particular piece was painted shortly after Nobunaga's Era.
The missionaries established schools...
and brought artists who taught oil painting.
This is the 'Lepanto Battle Map.'
It depicts the famous Lepanto Sea Battle.
That was 1571, the same time that Nobunaga burnt Mt. Hiei.
About that time, the Turkish Empire extended...
from eastern Europe to North Africa,
and controlled the Mediterranean Sea.
300 ships from Spain and Venice went to battle...
with the strong 250 ship Turkish Navy.
The battle was near the Gulf of Corinth in Greece,
and after four arduous hours of fighting,
the Turkish Navy was defeated.
After this, the Turkish Empire lost its power in the Mediterranean Sea.
Nobunaga was also now in the middle of a battle with the old regime.

August 1572
For Nobunaga, the fact that Kai's Takeda Shingen...
had made a move brought great fear over him.
That was because the Takeda army was known to be the most powerful in Japan.
In Nobunaga's mind, the following was mapped out.
Nobunaga was at Mt. Toragozen Fort in North Omi near Odani Castle.
In front of him was the Asai-Asakura army.
Then, behind him was Shogun Yoshiaki in Kyoto...
and Settsu's Ishiyama Hongwanji's Kennyo.
Under Hongwanji's orders there were nationwide Ikko riots.
There were also the armies of Matsunaga Hisahide and Miyoshi Yoshitsugu,
but now there was also Takeda Shingen from Kai and Shinano.
Nobunaga had finally been surrounded.
Yah, I did such a great job!
I'm so blessed that it's almost scary!
What's the matter?
What fine job did you do?
Yes. Well, you see...
It it's not worth hearing, then don't bother.
We don't have time for it now.
If you're lying, you'll be beheaded!
Now what's all this about?
You all look like Takeda Shingen is coming to attack us.
Hurry, tell us.
One of Asakura's vassals, Maeba Yoshitsugu and his son,
have become our allies as of today.
Vanguard leader, Tomita Nagashige, will also be soon.
Isn't Maeba Yoshitsugu one of Asakura's direct vassals?
How did you convince him to become an ally?
He just came rolling in. Let me bring him in.
Kihachi. Bring Sir Maeba Yoshitsugu here.
Shingen has moved.
Hideyoshi, your hunch was correct.
When will this happen?
We heard today that he has started to head for Kyoto.
I appreciate you coming in this heat.
I realize I have worried Lord Yoshikage.
We still need to settle the Anegawa battle,
and now that the shogun and Kai's Takeda are making moves,
we felt this was not an opportunity to miss...
and wanted to participate in the glory.
However, will Kai's Takeda really move without settling with the Uesugi?
Hongwanji's Kennyo has taken care of that...
by ordering Ikko riots throughout the Uesugi's domain.
Besides, Shingen's wife is from the Sanjo, an Imperial family.
Her sister is married to Kennyo as well.
Right, Sir Kageakira?
Yes, that's right.
This battle is for the emperor, shogun, and Hongwanji Ikko Sect,
so Lord Takeda will surely move.
We must join in too.
In September, Nobunaga left the Asai-Asakura battle in Hideyoshi's hands,
and returned to Gifu Castle.
Where should we begin?
First we must figure out Shingen's route.
Someone!
Bring me something to write on!
Good work.
This is an emergency.
One of my men just returned from Kai where horse loads are coming through.
Shingen may be departing soon.
Where is his lordship?
He just stepped out.
Get my secretariat.
This is the final showdown.
How is Lord Tokugawa?
He is gathering his men at Hamamatsu Castle.
Okazaki Castle is now under his son Nobuyasu.
But, he may be headed for Hamamastu Castle already.
Should I bring some men with me there?
That's a great idea. I will accompany you too.
I'm anxious to see Shingen's army.
Wait until you get orders from the lord.
The Asai-Asakura are also moving.
No one knows what the shogun is scheming.
When I met Sir Akechi and Sir Hosokawa at Sakamoto Castle,
they said the shogun and Hongwanji were behind the Ikko riots.
So is Sakamoto Castle in danger if Shingen moves?
We are unable to send men to Sakamoto Castle right now.
Depending on Shingen, everyone will gather in Gifu.
The burning of Mt. Hiei must have done it.
We can't blame the shogun for turning against us.
Since this will be my farewell address to the shogun,
listen to what I have to say and write it down.
First is in regards to visits to the emperor.
I have emphasized the importance of regularly visiting the emperor,
but recently you have been neglectful.
Second, is about the letters you send to other lords.
You write to them to request horses and so forth,
but you should have considered if it was decent.
When you had to send them a letter,
I urged you to consult with me first.
Nevertheless, you secretly sent out those letters.
If you had consulted me,
I would have written a letter of support and provided what you needed.
Third, all Shogunate officials should be rewarded...
according to years of service.
However, you rewarded well the newcomers to the government.
How can you nurture loyalty in this way?
Fourth, last summer, stored government rice was exchanged...
for gold and silver by you.
I have never heard of a shogun doing business...
and I am just appalled at your actions.
Considering the times we are facing of late,
it is more admirable to have rice stored for battles.
Fifth, your reputation is such that you are in every respect,
greedy and not respectable.
Thus, every class down to the farmers,
refer to you as the villainous shogun.
You may want to spend time contemplating this.
Sixth...
Nobunaga pointed out 17 such complaints about the shogun.
One may wonder why he bothered at this time,
but Nobunaga anticipated a clash with the shogun...
and desired to document the shogun's shortcomings for the world to see.
Damn Nobunaga calls me the "villainous shogun."
He is outrageously disrespectful!
We will forgive him.
Nobunaga must have found out about Shingen and returned to Gifu.
He is like a cornered rat that is helpless.
This is in essence a parting letter.
It is more than we could wish for now.
We will make copies of this...
and send them to various lords to declare Nobunaga's disloyalty.
We will get more allies using this.
But what could be going through his mind?
He acts brutally in everything he does...
and shows no signs of fear.
Even if he became a ruler, he will lose his followers.
If that thought never crossed his mind,
and he intends to overcome it with military power,
then he is really a fool.
However, except that, he is too crafty to be a fool.
He is certainly difficult to comprehend.
Burning down Mt. Hiei can't be sane.
Doesn't he know he is due for punishment?
But if he burns all and kills everyone who stands in his way,
he will get somewhere.
It wouldn't surprise me if he turned the entire area...
into a sea of flames and screamed that he was indeed the true ruler!
He doesn't think a step ahead.
There is something frightening about him.
Less than a month later on October 3rd,
Kai's Takeda Shingen left Kofu with 30,000 men.
Reporting! Yesterday morning,
Kai's Takeda Shingen left Kofu with over 30,000 men!
Which route have they taken?
They are heading for Shinano's Suwa.
Shinano's Suwa?
None are heading south to the Fuji River?
No army has separated from the main army.
They form a line like a long serpent...
and are traveling along the Kamanashi River...
heading northwest of Shinano.
Good job. Get some rest.
Forgive me.
They could go directly to Suruga along the Fuji River.
If they go to Suwa, and go along the Tenryu River to Inadani,
Hamamatsu Castle will be right ahead.
They may ever split the army at that point.
Shingen is known for his "Fu-rin-ka-zan" tactics.
They may just ignore Hamamatsu Castle...
can cut into Hida to get to us at Mino.
Yeah, they have a large army.
Traveling in the mountains is difficult.
It is easier to come out on flat land at Hamamatsu.
No, we are up against Shingen.
He wouldn't be that easy to read.
Shingen will first attack Hamamatsu Castle.
If he didn't and headed for Mino,
he could be facing a pincer attack.
I feel his "Fu-rin-ka-zan" tactics...
mean that the powerful are able to fight fairly.
I will go to Hamamatsu.
This will be our first contact with Shingen,
and if we are defeated, that will encourage them.
We owe Tokugawa one for Anegawa.
Sakuma.
Go in my place to Hamamatsu.
I will provide you with 3,000 men.
Then, I will leave immediately!
Please look after the rest.
Keep in contact.
Then...
If Shingen defeats the Tokugawa,
he will head right for Owari.
Then it will be the same path taken by the Imagawa.
The Mikawa border must be secured better.
Have you received any word from the capital?
Not yet.
Takeda Shingen, Sanjo, Hongwanji's Kennyo,
shogun, and the Asai-Asakura...
When Shingen moves, the rest will follow.
Maeda.
Send word to Mt. Toragozen and warn them...
that the Asai-Asakura may attack at any time.
Sir Kawajiri...
Sir Kawajiri, you don't seem to be preoccupied with success.
Is there some other goal?
No, there is nothing else.
Is that true?
It's not something you would lie about.
I guess I'm just not clever enough.
I must seem very deceitful from what you say.
No, you're your own person.
My own person?
Yes, success is important.
Why is that?
By succeeding you can nurture others.
But, one could improve himself without success.
Then why is success important?
You are the one who said it was important.
But you are the prime example of it.
Or, have you lost interest in that?
Just between us, it makes me tired.
I would suppose it does.
It's nothing to laugh about.
My eyes get dim at night, and when I fall asleep,
I always have nightmares.
Last night too, I dreamed that a serpent was swallowing me.
It's fortuitous to dream about serpents.
Is that right?
It's true. You may even be promoted today.
Ah, another promotion? That's wonderful!
Hideyoshi, this isn't a time to be laughing.
A commander shouldn't be biding time.
Has the enemy started moving?
Just a small group. We chased them away.
The west ridge is easy to climb. Be careful.
The lord left you with 5,000 men...
to take care of the Asai-Asakura armies.
The enemy could attack with full force any day.
Can you protect this fort all alone?
Of course.
If you are not confident, I will send word to the lord...
and have some men remain here.
You don't need to worry. I can take care of them myself.
I'm fine by myself!
The Asai-Asakura armies total 30,000 men.
It would be tough to defeat them all.
To overthrow a castle, one needs ten times the soldiers.
But this is just a fort.
I would only need twice the soldiers.
If I were the commander of the Asai army,
it would only take me a day to overthrow this place.
By the way, I have a request for you two.
I have been thinking of this for some time,
but I would like a letter from each of your last names.
What would you do with it?
I would like to learn how to be brave like you both.
If I can have a letter from each,
I would discard my name of Kinoshita.
You're impossible.
He had a dream about a serpent last night.
What do you think?
I'll take "Shiba" of Shibata, and "Ba" or "Ha" of Niwa,
and call myself "Hashiba."
Hashiba. Hashiba.
That has a nice ring.
Hashiba. Hashiba Hideyoshi... What do you think?
If that's what you want, it's fine with me.
Hashiba Hideyoshi...
Hum, that's not bad.
It sounds classier than Kinoshita. Doesn't it, Nagahide?
But he could taint our names instead.
That's unforgivable.
I vow never to do that.
I swear to the Tsushima Daimyojin gods.
Sir Niwa, I beg of you.
I want your virtues and Sir Shibata's courage.
Very well!
I am grateful!
I have no choice.
Yah, that's wonderful!
From now on I will be Hashiba Tokichiro Hideyoshi.
Reporting. A messenger is here from Gifu.
Send him in.
Reporting. Kai's Takeda Shingen left Kofu two days ago...
with 30,000 men and is headed for Suwa.
The Asai-Asakura may attack as a result.
The lord warns you to be very cautious.
Good work.
So Takeda Shingen has finally left Kofu?
We must be prepared.
Let's return to Gifu immediately.
The west ridge.
I'll be careful.
Don't taint our names.
I swear to the gods.
Get our horses!
Hashiba Hideyoshi, farewell!
Farewell!
Reporting! The enemy is on the west ridge!
I'll be right there!
Shingen has left Kofu and is headed here.
Be prepared to die this time.
You too, Onabe.
You will win for sure.
Don't say things just to cheer him up.
If Nobunaga says to prepare, it looks gloomy.
Yes. There is no clear proof,
but the shogun is behind this.
Perhaps burning Mt. Hiei was a mistake.
Otherwise, why would you be attacked like this?
The Takeda and Oda were joined by marriage.
To be attacked when you are without allies...
This is a result of your lack of virtues.
Without respect for god and Buddha, you are doomed.
Fear them.
I wish to speak.
The lord isn't at fault at all.
The lord burned Mt. Hiei because the priests...
tainted the grounds with their secular ways.
The Asai backed down on their agreement and betrayed the lord.
They should be punished.
I know that I shouldn't be defying you,
but Lord Takeda is a man who chased out his father...
and murdered his child.
He would take advantage of our lord's situation.
If the lord lacks virtue, then Lord Takeda is demon-like.
Our lord should not be the one who is punished.
If anyone, I should know that.
The lord took in my sons and I without saying a word.
Useless as I was, he showed me compassion.
This is an example of his kind disposition.
As far as I know, he does not attack without reason.
It is always the other side who angers him.
The lord just sets out to right their actions.
How I wish I could believe that.
Summon Zuiten.
What's on your mind?
Do you think I still love him?
Summon him. He can do only one thing.
That is to pray to the heavens.
After all that has happened,
now is the time to make use of him.
Bring him here and make him pray fervently.
You are not allowed to lose this battle.
Unless you win, you will not live.
Isn't your goal to live to be the ruler?
Repent for all your sins to this day,
and defeat Takeda Shingen with one blow.
This is your once-in-a-lifetime challenge.
Take advantage and do all you possibly can.
Never forget Onabe's feelings.
There is someone who believes you are righteous.
You predicted the treacherous "Suizanken" fate,
but I traveled southwest many times...
and yet was able to return to Gifu which is northeast.
Fortunetelling isn't reliable.
Look, I'm still alive.
I ask for forgiveness from my heart.
But, after I checked more carefully,
I discovered that Kyoto is more to the west than southwest.
Thus, Gifu is more east from Kyoto, rather than northeast.
The "Suizanken" didn't apply because of that.
I am very sorry.
So even monkeys fall off trees?
That's right. The monkey fell off the tree.
Whatever happened to Matsu?
I know nothing about her whereabouts.
That's not a lie.
Zuiten...
Yes?
Don't bow to me just for form!
No, I am honored to be in your presence.
Never mind. Lift you ugly face.
Yes.
Then, I will ask you again.
Yes?
Do you still believe that Onabe is the death god?
Forgive me, that is a fact.
Onabe is the death god disguised as Lady Onabe...
to bring ill fortune to the Oda family.
What if I insist she is a normal woman?
Will you still defy me and claim she is the death god?
No. If you order me to, I will discard it from my mind.
Good. Don't forget those words.
Yes.
From now on, if she gets a bee sting,
or even catches a cold, I will hold you responsible.
And you will be beheaded at that time. Understand?
Yes.
Now let's talk.
Yes.
As you know, the Oda are facing a tragic time in their destiny.
Yes.
The Takeda have left Kofu and are headed this way.
I am trapped in all directions.
I must fight prepared to die.
Yes.
The Oda family's future depends on this battle with the Takeda.
My Lord, let Zuiten open up a prayer session!
I will call in good fortune to you again!
I beg of you!
The Oda are like my own family.
I won't allow Takeda Shingen to get near us!
I beg of you!
This Zuiten will pray hard so the heavens will hear me!
Okay, go to the prayer room.
The Takeda army went to Inadani through Suwa,
and then went straight down to surround Futamata Castle.
Then suddenly another army arrived in east Mino...
and attacked Iwamura Castle where Nobunaga's aunt was lord.
Reporting! The Takeda army has surrounded Iwamura Castle...
and have begun their attack!
Prepare for departure!
In December, the Takeda captured Futamata Castle...
and headed for Hamamatsu Castle where Tokugawa Ieyasu was.
Silence! They are ignoring us and passing right by!
Do you want me to just accept that?!
Please calm down.
The enemy has a large army and may be trying to lure us out.
If we leave the castle, we will lose for sure.
Don't you have any sense of pride?!
They are strolling in our back yard!
They act like nobody even lives in Hamamatsu Castle!
They act as if we don't even exist!
How can I let them do this to us?!
We can show up the Takeda another time!
When night falls, we will attack them from behind.
That's cowardly! It's not acceptable!
What are you saying?!
Are you going to play into their hands?
No, this is not a case of win or lose.
It's a matter of dignity for Mikawa's Mastudaira!
Do you want us to hide under a pillar...
like a rat escaping from a cat?
Even an old man like me can't stand it!
My Lord, let's go!
I will go with you even alone!
Let's go!
Please wait. Allow me to speak.
You are falling for one of Shingen's tactics.
Please wait just awhile longer.
Sakuma, you are not in Mino.
The Matsudaira have their pride!
We resent any interference from outsiders!
That's not my intention.
Please listen to what Sir Masachika has to say.
The enemy won't disappear.
They are close enough for a night attack.
Please reconsider.
My Lord, please.
There are things that can't be overlooked.
Torii, come with me.
Forgive me.
No...
Reporting!
Last night at Mikata-ga-hara the Takeda and Tokugawa fought...
and the Tokugawa lost!
What did the Takeda do after that?!
Without pausing, they are heading here!
Where there any fatalities to the Takeda army?
Hardly any.
Good work.
Lady Rui...
Pray. Pray until the heavens hear you.
Yes.
Shingen is a really strong man.
He defeated the Tokugawa...
and is headed for Nobunaga this very moment.
Now is the time!
We must declare to the nation that Nobunaga must be suppressed!
Let everyone rise to the occasion!
Reporting. Shogun Yoshiaki has ordered Mastunaga Hisahide,
Miyoshi Yoshitsugu, and Rokkaku Jotei to rise against you!
Zuiten! What's wrong?!
Lady Rui...
It hurts!
Zuiten, get a hold of yourself!
I can't see!
My eyes! I can't see!
It's the punishment of God!
So everybody, until next time...
To be continued.
To be continued.
