At last Nobunaga was about to defeat Mino,

but the first half of his life was tragic.

Nobunaga was born in Nagoya, Owari...

at a time when turbulence was prevalent in Owari.

At the age of six, Nobunaga was separated from his parents...

and married Saito Dosan's daughter Kicho at the age of 15.

Soon after, his father died...

and Nobunaga's right hand man, Hirade Masahide, committed suicide.

It became a do-or-die situation for Nobunaga.

The struggle for power in Owari worsened...

and it led to bloody battles.

First, Owari's governor was killed,

then his assistant, and then Nobunaga's uncle.

Finally, Nobunaga himself killed his younger brother Nobuyuki,

Lord of Suemori Castle.

Owari was unified eventually,

but peace was only fleeting before his formidable foe,

Imagawa Yoshimoto attacked.

It was the Battle of Okehazama.

But Nobunaga miraculously won and was recognized.

He was 27 years old.

To better battle with Mino,

he transferred his castle from Kiyosu to Komakiyama.

Meanwhile, Kicho left him and Shino left this world.

Now Nobunaga was about to settle the first half of his life.

He was now 33 years old.

Nobunaga

After Nobunaga defeated east Mino, he then proceeded to attack...

Saito vassal Nagai Hayato-no-suke's Seki Castle.

He was the last of the powerful foes left.

Charge!

Meanwhile, provincial lords were being convinced to change sides.

It was to isolate Saito Tatsuoki in Inabayama Castle.

It's taking a long time.

Seki Castle Lord Nagai Hayato-no-suke is the most powerful in Mino,

and is also Saito Tatsuoki's uncle.

I'm sure he is fighting with all his might.

Reporting!

Our army is now attacking Seki Castle from three directions!

Are they still outside their castle?

No. They have confined themselves to the castle.

Don't be caught off guard.

Also, tell the men that special rewards will be pledged.

Any man who brings back a head gets silver.

Seki Castle

Inform our men that the enemy vanguard...

is the traitor Kajita and Saruhami armies!

We can't let them get away alive.

Nagai Hayato-no-suke

We'll confine ourselves and see this through!

Until he defeats this castle, Nobunaga can't touch Inabayama Castle.

Then it's Nobunaga's loss!

Father. We can't win battles by staying confined.

Let's attack them by night and show them our strength.

You are right.

We will wait until night to attack.

Reporting! The enemy is attacking us from three directions...

and our west gate is about to be broken!

Until the west Mino army gets here, fight hard!

You have the option now of serving Nobunaga and living.

He is an aggressive man, but is kind to his subordinates.

Your possessions and family will be safe.

I'll mediate and represent you. I promise.

When you have the chance to live,

why subject your family and men to death for pride.

Let's keep living.

If you decide, then west Mino will follow.

Don't let west Mino turn into a sea of blood.

I know you've put a lot of effort into this, but forgive me.

Don't worry about it.

We're old battle friends.

I envy you.

I am indecisive and must contemplate.

Then I can't bring myself to make a decision.

No, I know the problem is your loyalty to Saito,

and your high ethical standards.

You are right to feel this way.

But I wanted you to overcome that.

It's not a matter of logic.

My goal is to keep you alive.

I'll be frank with you then.

It's my pride getting in the way.

I know what the problem is, but I can't do anything about it.

I'm sorry that I can't make your efforts worthwhile.

Who are you?!

We're men from Inabayama Castle.

Is Lord Inaba around?

What brings you here so suddenly?! Insolence!

Traitors are not forgivable.

Sir Mori. Welcome back to Mino.

Kill the traitors!

See if there are others around.

Hide their bodies.

Reporting! Our army is attacking Seki Castle from 3 directions!

Now if we can capture Seki Castle,

it is as if Saito Tatsuoki lost his right arm.

Now east Mino will finally be overtaken.

This is a battle with the Mino spirit,

a spirit Saito Dosan created.

Perhaps it is a battle with Saito Dosan's spirit.

Reporting!

Sir Mori Yoshinari is here.

Send him through.

I just got back.

Good work. What do you report?

Sir Inaba Yoshimichi has switched over.

Good work. This is the fruit of your hard labor.

No, it wasn't much.

But, by meeting him, I recalled my past ties with Mino.

What is the rest of west Mino going to do?

It's still a subject for discussion.

Then we haven't won over west Mino completely yet?

Not yet, but if Inaba speaks, they will listen.

We took this long. We have to defeat Mino!

Reporting. The outer castle walls are down!

Tell the men to move to the dungeon.

Check out the escape route.

Reporting! The young lord was killed at the west gate!

Treat his wounds!

Tell the men we will fight against them another time.

But for now, head for the escape road.

Other than Inabayama Castle,

Nobunaga had most of Mino under his control.

But in the midst of this, he lost his wife Shino.

The three children that remained were Nobunaga's treasures.

Congratulations on your victory at Mino.

I heard Lord Matsudaira has unified Mikawa,

and was give a new name from the imperial court, Tokugawa.

That is indeed auspicious.

What brings you here?

It is about the marriage proposal.

I see.

I know that marriage was already agreed upon.

It was to signify our reconciliation...

and there really is no rush to this.

But to proceed with talks with Suruga, Kai, Sagami,

and other domains, he wants to make it official.

Being your relative will give him an edge.

I understand.

I am most grateful.

But, Gotoku is only eight years old.

She is much too young. How about in two years?

I, Sakai Tadatsugu, understand your feelings,

but, please consider our position.

I would appreciate a favorable response.

You will be getting married off to Mikawa next spring.

You are almost nine years old.

It was decided that you would marry into the Mikawa eventually.

The sooner you go, the easier it is for you later.

Mikawa is a warm and comfortable place to live.

The Tokugawa will take good care of you.

Don't worry. The land may be strange to you,

but Tokugawa Ieyasu and I are childhood friends.

If you have problems, let Ieyasu know.

All right?

Yes.

What's the matter?

A marriage is a good thing for a woman.

To become a bride to a good family is a woman's dream.

And, the Tokugawa are a fine family.

Yes.

Pardon me. Lady Oichi is here.

What is it? I'm busy.

Older brother...

I'm busy.

Gotoku is just eight years old.

Why are you sending her away at that age?

It has nothing to do with you. Now leave.

She just lost her mother...

and you, her father, is mercilessly sending her away.

What do you mean? Gotoku is getting married to the Mikawa Tokugawa.

It's an auspicious occasion.

Gotoku was crying.

Please. Wait another three, no four or five years.

You have already reconciled with Mikawa.

Why the rush?

Don't intervene in these external decisions.

Gotoku's marriage is an internal decision for the Oda.

As a father, think of your daughter.

Oichi, hold your tongue.

Mother...

Lord Nobunaga. I need to bring this up again.

Yes?

It's about Gotoku's marriage.

Everything has been decided.

I mean after that.

How about we take this approach?

We will send Gotoku to Mikawa to get married.

Soon after, she can return to us again.

Say she is visiting her family.

We will return her to Mikawa when she is twelve years old.

Mother, that won't do.

I know you have thought this through,

but to have her return is essentially a divorce.

Is that so? Not if the parents agree to it?

Gotoku and Takechiyo are just eight years old.

They are just children. What will they do?

They will just be raised separately.

Marriage can only be a formality.

Gotoku has agreed to it.

Children will do that, but she is bearing it.

I left you at Nagoya Castle at age six.

I couldn't sleep at night wondering how you felt.

I'm sure you felt hateful towards me.

And yet, you endured.

As parents, we never knew your feelings.

If something happens to Gotoku in Mikawa,

you will live to regret it.

Promises are important, but so is a child's future.

I don't want you to go through what I did.

I know where you are coming from.

But, I need to clarify one point.

That day, when I became Lord of Nagoya Castle,

I never hated your or Father at all.

It was a day of glory for me to become lord.

You are worrying over nothing.

I hope this is so.

Come closer.

Mother, you seem to misunderstand a child's heart.

A child has his own way of coping with turbulence.

Gotoku is no exception.

She knows that marriage is her fate.

Her tears are not for sadness, but for deciding.

Is that so?

One cries even when they are happy.

I think you are a bit too soft.

I am what I am because of Father's strictness.

And he was right.

If a parent addresses every whim and cry of a child,

the child will never be able to fend for themselves.

Like my father, you must use force or distancing.

To make a child independent, you need to be harsh.

That is the responsibility of a parent to a child.

As long as you feel that way.

I have always felt so.

Or, is this all leading to Nobuyuki?

You thought I killed him out of hatred for you and Father?

That wasn't so!

I didn't have that in mind.

He tried to kill me twice.

He was a fool to think it couldn't happen to him!

You were the root of his problem!

How dare you say that to our mother!

Quiet!

Nobuyuki was a good man.

Good men die early.

Older brother, you have no compassion for your family.

I feel pity for you.

Gotoku is your child.

She can only rely on you.

But, the following spring,

Nobunaga married Gotoku to the Mikawa.

I can't say if being a daimyo's child was happiness,

but these two children later led tragic lives.

Sakai

I witnessed far more tragic children, too.

Damien, please speak to Bateren.

If we keep looking after these abandoned children,

rumors will have more dropping them at the door.

I know that.

Almeida and Vilela would never have allowed this.

It's also hard to find women who can breastfeed.

I promise to bring it up with Bateren.

But, I need two more women who have breast milk for now.

Let's split up and search for them.

My name is Luis Frois. Louis Frois.

You are all God's children.

And, you will all be saved.

I just returned.

How did things go?

Very well.

I'll hear about it.

Inaba Yoshimichi and others from west Mino...

will offer hostages first before becoming your subordinates.

So, we must send men out to receive their hostages.

Well...

This must be done in a timely manner.

Mori...

Get ready to go to battle.

With those from west Mino on our side,

Inabayama Castle is isolated by itself.

We can defeat them without waiting any longer.

Someone!

Send a messenger to every ally lord...

and have them prepare for battle tomorrow!

Hurry!

Charge!

Inabayama Castle

Reporting! The Oda army has suddenly appeared...

and has set the lower castle area on fire!

What?

It was so sudden, we couldn't counterattack.

What do you mean by suddenly?!

I'm sure we're not talking about one or two men!

Get some men together immediately.

Reporting. The Oda army is now at Mt. Zuiryuji's Inokuchi.

What? Why weren't their movements noticed earlier?!

What is west Mino doing?

Get ready to confine ourselves in the castle.

Someone!

Send a messenger to Inaba and Ujiie of west Mino...

and have them attack the Oda from behind!

Hurry!

Tsuneoki. Let's see the map.

We will burn the castle town by tomorrow morning...

and leave the castle bare.

Has the west side been taken care of?

Yes. Men are positioned at Inokuchi and Mt. Kongen.

Why don't we do a night attack now?

I'll be the vanguard.

No. Tokichiro and his men will attack the mountain castle tonight.

We will confine Tatsuoki to his main castle.

If they can't go to their mountain castle,

they can't last long confined to their castle.

When we capture the mountain castle tonight,

I'll let you all have one grab of silver.

No, two grabs! Maybe, twice that if you do well!

Hurry!

They are mountain bandits. You may regret your words.

If we capture the castle, money will be no problem.

Why aren't you attacking? Damn Nobunaga!

What's this smoke?!

Lord, please sit.

Uncle, the town is on fire and we are surrounded.

I can't just sit!

I wish to report!

West Mino has changed sides!

Which ones?!

I hear it is Kitagata Lord Ando Morinari,

Ogaki Lord Ujiie Naomoto, Sone Lord Inaba Yoshimichi.

That's enough!

I didn't think Inaba would betray us.

How are things in the town?

It is totally burned.

I can't take it! We can't let Nobunaga get away with this!

Let's get out and kill them off!

What are you doing?

Are you waiting for them to attack?

Pick up your swords and let's fight!

It's not as if we have lost, lord.

We can remain in the mountains for half a year...

and ask the shogun to hold Nobunaga back for now.

Reporting!

What is it?!

The Oda army attacked the mountain castle from behind...

and burned the rice storehouse and outer castle walls!

Now there is nowhere to escape.

Burn it all! Burn it all!

Let the lord see the flames!

Set fire to the dungeon!

I'll be a commander for sure now!

What are you going to do?!

The enemy has confined themselves to the castle.

Shall we attack them at the break of dawn?

We have time to inform all the troops to attack all at once.

Inabayama Castle is now a barren castle.

Have the castle fenced and wait until they surrender.

If we attack them, more men will die.

It's not productive.

Reporting!

The enemy has started to fence us in!

Are there any signs of attack?

They are just building the fence.

Good work.

To think that this will end without a battle.

Nobunaga never attacked Inabayhama Castle directly...

and within half a month, had taken over the castle.

His enemy Saito Tatsuoki came to his limits...

and opened up the castle with the agreement...

that his vassals would be spared.

Tatsuoki left for Kawachi's Nagashima.

Mino's Saito family was finally overtaken...

and Nobunaga became overseer of Mino.

My lord.

Lady Ryu is in the back.

My older sister?!

Yes.

She's still here...

Sister.

It's been a long time.

I didn't think I would ever see you again.

I remained here so I could see you.

Did you want to destroy another domain that badly?

Your wife Kicho was born in this Mino.

I married into this family.

Tatsuoki is my son.

My father-in-law and husband Yoshitatsu are dead.

You should have no one to hold a grudge against.

Yet, what made you want to destroy Mino?

I asked why you wanted to destroy it!

Answer me!

Sister.

Did you want to witness my unhappiness?!

Answer me!

May the heavens punish you.

Nobunaga defeated Mino after ten years.

Inabayama Castle was located in Inokuchi...

and was renamed Gifu by Nobunaga.

Akechi Mitsuhide?

He's here this time for Shogun Askikaga Yoshiaki.

Oh, Akechi Mitsuhide. How did you know I was here?

Rumors of you can be heard all the way to Echizen.

I wish to congratulate you for your victory in Mino.

Why are you here today?

Could we please speak alone?

Tsuneoki. Have the men leave.

Well?

I came as an envoy of Shogun Ashikaga Yoshiaki.

Ashikaga Yoshiaki is presently at Echizen's Ichijyogatani...

and wishes to go to Kyoto as soon as possible.

He has asked me to request your support.

To Kyoto?

Yes. Ashikaga Yoshiaki acknowledges your superior capabilities...

and would like you to assist him in Kyoto.

He wants you to immediately depart for Kyoto.

Kyoto...

Kyoto...

A year after this day, Nobunaga left for Kyoto.

He had climbed the ladder of success unbelievably fast.

So everybody, until next time...

To be continued.

To be continued.
