The Kama Sutra is a misunderstood work.
Most people today know it only as an ancient manual of sexual positions.
This is only partially true.
It is an engaging text, a socially aware text, a text that reveals ideas that
modern sexual health professionals have only recently revalidated.
Kama Sutra is a treatise written for medical happiness in general.
It aims at creating a symphony of beauty and relationship that lasts a lifetime.
Kama Sutra connotes happiness not only between the two legs but also between
the two ears.
It also focuses on the social, religious, physical and cultural aspects
of mankind.
The Kama Sutra suggests that the first three nights after marriage should be
reserved for non-genital sexual exploration.
Dr. Prakash Kothari mentions that sexual therapy pioneers Masters and Johnson
coined the term sensate focus, a practice where a couple will abstain
from intercourse in order to better learn about each other's body.
These exercises encourage people to focus on their senses.
No genital touching is allowed, the same practice the Kama Sutra suggested nearly
1,700 years ago.
The Kama Sutra, which in English translates to aphorisms of love, was
written in India by Malanga Vatsayana.
According to Dr. Katari, it was written sometime between 351 and 375 A.D.
Vatsayana was no playboy or deviant. He was pious and well-respected.
His writings stressed the importance of sexual knowledge to form a happy union.
This happy union is the ultimate harmony achieved between a man and a woman with
respect to love, trust, companionship, and yes, sex.
The Kama Sutra unveils the psychological, physiological and the
sociological aspects of love. It is a complete study of the art and science of
sexuality and lives by the principle, what is good for the body is good for
sex. What Sayana has advocated, certain diet and exercises, depending upon the
physiology and pathology of an individual.
Overall his views about diet and exercise relate to the fact that Sexual
potency is inseparable from the total vitality of the whole body.
Hence, what is good for the whole body is good for sex.
The Kama Sutra teaches people to understand sexuality and to act in
accordance with what is learned. There is a time and a place for sex.
The Kama Sutra suggests an etiquette of sex to avoid troubled relationships and
to help approach a happy union.
The term happy union indicates that sexual pleasure is not a performance to
be gauged It's a happiness to be shared between two individuals He talks about
being happy that is content in different spheres physical, mental,
emotional, social and psychological Almost all varieties of sex are
discussed in Kama Sutra right from masturbation
oral sex, anal sex, lesbian love.
Even sex toys like dolls and dildos. It includes foreplay, interplay, and
afterplay as well.
The Kama Sutra teaches us to prepare thoroughly for sex, emphasizing
foreplay. Bathing, grooming, perfuming, and atmosphere are all essential
elements for great lovemaking.
Take time to bathe yourself, or you and your partner may bathe each other.
Bathing makes the body more pleasant to the touch. It softens your skin and
relaxes your muscles.
Washing each other can be an erotic experience in itself.
Vatsayana recognized the importance of bathing and its importance to sexuality.
Arouse your partner by massaging their body as you wash them. Take your time.
Revel in the experience.
The slower and more suggestive you are with your touch, the more aroused your
partner will be.
Create an exotic atmosphere.
The Kama Sutra suggests using perfumes, oils, and candles to excite the senses.
Remove all distraction.
Lovemaking requires your full attention.
Embrace your partner. Feel the warmth and energy your partner sends you.
Move at half your normal speed.
Even the slightest touch of your bodies will be exquisite.
Move your arms up and down your lover's body.
Press your cheek to your lover's. Look into their eyes.
Through this embrace, you can connect on a deeper level, a level where words
aren't necessary.
Play with the mouth is the most natural form of foreplay.
Every couple develops their own ways to kiss. It is an aspect of love where
people can become most playful.
The Kama Sutra describes many variations of the kiss.
Don't stop at the lips. There are the ears, ankles, thighs, back, breasts, and
spine. Be creative. Experiment.
Your partner may enjoy being kissed in places you never imagined.
Sucking on your partner can be equally stimulating.
Fingers and toes are perfect to wrap your lips around.
Vatsayana has put great emphasis on partner satisfaction.
He has emphasized the fact that what is important is the sexual satisfaction and
not the sex act per se.
A man should only enter a woman after she is well lubricated and aroused.
Vatsayana advocates that those men who climax too early should satisfy their
partners first either by masturbation or by oral sex, or with the help of an
artificial penis.
Only then should he attempt penetration.
At the heart of the Kama Sutra are the sexual positions.
There are 22 specific sexual positions or types of congress described in the
Kama Sutra.
We will look at 12 of the most interesting positions described.
Although some are more difficult than others, don't be afraid to experiment
with them.
Take your first step into delight by beginning with the blossoming position.
For the woman, arch your back by raising your hips and spread your legs wide
apart. Allow your lover to enter you fully and deeply. Open yourself to him.
Trust him.
Welcome him to feel you deeper than he ever has before.
As the name implies, in this position, the vagina is fully open to allow full
exploration. Use a lubricant to facilitate penetration.
Breast and clitoral stimulation in this position enhances a woman's erotic
sensations. Eye contact during intercourse can dramatically increase
intimacy. In the blossoming position, as the name implies, vagina is fully
blossomed, that is thoroughly widened. Hence, it reduces pain during coitus.
In addition, this position also helps in infertility.
as semen is best retained in this posture.
Hence it can help in overcoming the conceptive inadequacy.
Vatsayana did not have the refined sexual toys we have today, but through
his words, he expressed the importance of varied sexual positions and would
have welcomed tools to facilitate doing so.
This is the blossoming position, but this time we have some help.
Because she needs to keep her back arched, this position is difficult to
maintain.
Pillows or cushions will give her back some much needed support.
Indra is the king of the Hindu gods, ruler of the heavens and god of thunder
and rain.
This position is named for his wife, Indrani.
The Indrani asana is a special position where the woman draws her thighs apart,
folds her legs at the knees, and rests her legs in the armpit of her lover, and
then engages in sexual congress.
When the woman rolls herself into a ball, her vaginal muscles tighten.
This builds sexual tension, a key ingredient to orgasm.
In addition the man can fondle her breasts and even stimulate her clitoris.
Communicate with your partner to convey how hard and deep you may thrust.
With your partner on top, weave your body around him. Don't let him go. He is
locked in the loving embrace of the twining position.
The twining position leaves your hands free to caress each other. Run your
hands along each other's body.
This intimate, tactile sensation can be highly arousing.
In this position, the vaginal grip is increased to the peak because of
enhanced constriction of the vulva and vagina.
Although you are on the bottom, you are in control.
Be firm. Guide your partner's movements with your leg. Temper his thrusting to a
pattern you both enjoy.
Slow him down and try to hold his penis inside your vagina.
The twining position allows better grip and thus enhances sexual arousal.
The position may be of help in those men who reach orgasm with a delay.
In addition, some women enjoy this more
because of the increased rubbing of the clitoris and the outer third of the
vagina, which is most sensitive.
In the pressed position, clitoral stimulation during intercourse can be
very intense.
Be gentle to your partner while engaged in this position.
Move slowly until you find what is comfortable.
Try to read your partner's body language.
Recognize the meaning of each other's breathing patterns.
She shouldn't have to tell you if she is uncomfortable.
As you grow and learn together, your senses will allow you to make the most
of your sexual experiences.
The pressed position can easily become the half-pressed position during the
course of lovemaking.
Instead of two legs on the chest, if she rests on one leg and has her other leg
stretched out, it becomes the half-pressed position.
Clitoral stimulation during intercourse can be very intense, and in the half
-pressed position, the woman allows her clitoris to be accessible to stimulation
by stretching out one leg.
The half-pressed position leaves one of the man's hands free to caress his
partner. The sensation of vaginal fullness along with clitoral stimulation
can bring a woman incredible pleasure.
This next position, the splitting of the bamboo, the woman lies on her back in
similar fashion to the traditional man on top position.
The man holds the woman's thighs in a vertical position with his hands, and
she places one of her legs on her lover's shoulder. The other is
stretched. Alternate legs and repeat in the course of union.
Continue this pattern at your own pace.
Raising your leg will squeeze the penis and bring pleasure to both of you.
With this extra movement, thrusting becomes secondary.
You may decide to alter your thrusting pattern depending on whether your
partner's leg is up or down.
This added leg movement makes the position unique and exciting.
The unusual nature of this position gives you the chance to be free and
creative by showing that there are no boundaries to your movements.
As always, experiment with this position.
Perhaps you may find a way to expand Vatsayana's method.
It takes a little practice, but should prove to be very enjoyable.
This position may be the most difficult for the man. The Kama Sutra says it is a
position that requires much practice to master.
The idea behind the turning position is to rotate the man's body in a circle
without removing the penis from the vagina.
Rotate your body around with your arms, moving your legs only when necessary.
The woman should refrain from thrusting and lie still while her partner is
turning. Take it slow at first.
If you are able, maintain vaginal penetration and increase your speed.
Switch directions.
Don't expect it to work the very first time. This is not easy, but don't get
discouraged. Have fun trying and allow yourself to laugh even if it doesn't
work exactly the way you planned.
Ancient erotic artwork of India and the Far East actually shows more standing
sexual positions than lying positions.
The most popular example of this type of sexual congress is the suspended
congress.
Vatsayana suggested that the suspended congress be performed with the man's
back against a wall.
The woman can then push off the wall with her feet to initiate intercourse.
As revolutionary as he was, we would think Vatsayana would surely welcome a
device like this swing to facilitate the suspended congress.
With a swing, the woman becomes weightless, easing the strain on the
man's back, allowing for more movement in varied positions.
If a swing is unavailable, you can still try the suspended congress, just find a
good sturdy wall to support you.
The Kama Sutra teaches that we should learn from nature and see the way
animals hold congress.
It speaks specifically of the congress of the cow and encourages the viewing of
congresses of the dog, goat, deer, tiger, and elephant, among others, to
educate oneself.
While the name may be the least attractive, the congress of the cow can
give deep satisfaction to both partners.
Hold your partner by her waist so you can control thrusting.
Her buttocks provides padding to allow more forceful movement, but slowly work
your way up to this.
She should be well lubricated and very aroused before any vigorous thrusting
takes place.
If you can reach around your partner's body, massage her clitoris. This will
provide added satisfaction.
If you are not agile enough to reach the ground with your hands while keeping
your legs straight, use the arm of a couch or cushion.
It is not imperative that you touch the ground. It is, however, imperative that
you enjoy yourself.
The Kama Sutra suggests considering the different actions of animals in the wild
and learning from them.
The Kama Sutra chapter on sexual positions ends with the Congress of the
Cow. But in a later chapter, Vatsayana describes a few woman-on-top positions.
The top is the female counterpart to the turning position.
In this case, the woman spins around.
This is one of the more difficult sexual positions but may be facilitated with
the use of a swing.
Woman-on-top position is advocated when a man is obese, fatigued or anxious.
Even for a shy woman and for repeat performance, this position may prove
beneficial.
Sometimes this position could add just curiosity or a feature of novelty.
Thanks to this swing, the top is easily achieved.
The idea of the swing is far from new.
Modern technology has made it better and easier to use than this one, but the
idea and desire are still the same.
Take it slowly.
A wrong move could be painful.
With the use of the swing, the man can control the spinning.
If both partners have a desire to try to perform this at a quick pace, make sure
that you are both well lubricated.
In the pair of tongs position, after insertion of the penis, the woman
constricts her vulva and vagina.
The grip may become so tight that dislodgement of the penis from the
vagina may become difficult.
This comes only after proper training of the vaginal muscles.
This position also gives the woman full control.
A shy woman becomes more expressive as she initiates all movement and has the
freedom to control the depth and speed of thrusting.
The pair of tongs position usually has the man propped up by his arms, but a
pillow allows him to massage his lover's back, thighs, and if he can reach, her
clitoris. If your partner cannot reach your clitoris, it might be easier to
stimulate yourself instead.
In the pair of tongs, a vibrator like this will do wonders for both of you. It
can stimulate the clitoris and testicles at the same time.
But Sayana describes the pair of tongs position
which involves woman on top in a separate chapter known as Samdamsha.
The benefits of woman on top positions are when a man has difficulty in
maintaining or sustaining erection usually due to fatigue or a disease.
The woman in such a situation by her already trained vaginal muscles grips
the penis in such a manner that it helps in increasing his arousal thus regaining
direction.
Without the use of some type of support to prop the man up, this next position,
the swing, becomes uncomfortable to perform.
The woman is in control of all thrusting and movement in the swing position.
Many women enjoy the feeling of power they get from being on top, and many
women have their best orgasms when they are able to control their own movements.
Squeezing the penis with the vaginal muscles or pulling it into you and
releasing may give you an entirely different sensation from the usual
thrusting motion.
You may want to incorporate a vibrator into the swing position to add an extra
sensation. The swing position allows you complete control of movement.
Many journeys to pleasure can be started from a single position.
Allow the ancient wisdom of the Kama Sutra to guide your path for sexual
learning and growth.
Explore and let your partner do the same. The pleasure of your sexuality is
limitless. The Kama Sutra is an insightful and fantastic tool, but it is
you who must utilize that tool.
Take this knowledge that the Kama Sutra provides and use it to its fullest.
Expand upon it. The seed of a great lover has been planted in you.
Let the roots grow and blossom, and soon you will taste the sweet fruit of better
sex.
