ON XERXES' THRONE
[Giorgos] Nowadays, we count work in years, not in hours.
Every twelve months, the machines check what we've done.
I have no idea why we make what we make.
I have no idea why we make anything in this world.
I am the ninth generation working here.
For as long as I am walking, I will only be doing this.
But I don't mind.
Here I have everything I need.
Sometimes I miss having someone to talk to.
Because I know this is what people do.
[seagulls squawking]
There are no rules, except one.
We do not touch each other.
[noise]
It began as a precaution and then they got used to it.
We all got used to it.
Touching was no longer an option.
Touching and everything else that comes after.
I don't know, maybe it's right.
Maybe it's easier to work the wheel
when your mind doesn't drift elsewhere.
But people here found a way.
They always did.
We can look freely for as long as we want,
but we do not touch.
[soft music playing]
[birds chirping]
In the early years, they used to guard us.
Now there is a hum over our heads that comes and goes.
[tense music playing]
[cicadas singing]
Part of my job is to control their bodies.
At night when they sleep, at work, during their break.
I've seen many people come. They have the same look.
As soon as I see them, I know who'll make it.
They had something different.
You couldn't take your eyes off them.
I had no idea what brought them here.
The only sure thing was that this place was not for them.
# [Giorgos Mazonakis: Aniko Se Mena]
# The phone is ringing
# I won't pick up
# Doorbells are ringing
# And I won't open up
# Whatever I do
# I blame myself
# And I want to end up
# By myself
# I belong to myself
# And to my dreams
# I don't want anyone
# In my solitude #
In the next few weeks, I had to teach them the job.
In our world, we divided things
into what each of us can and can't do.
Whatever that may be.
I was yet to learn what they could do.
# They call me weird
# I don't mind
# I do whatever I like
# I'm so tired
# That's why I don't want
# My heart to hurt again
# I belong to myself
# And to my dreams
# I don't want anyone
# In my solitude #
[whistling]
Snap out of it!
Maybe you can help out?
In your dreams, baby.
Myrto didn't take any shit.
She worked for many years.
She'd sleep where she wanted, get up any time.
Apart from the teasing, no one bothered her.
There were times it seemed Angela was here way before me.
She knew the machinery better than anybody.
She knew and saw everything.
[birds chirping]
[low rumbling]
[cicadas singing]
[rubbing]
What's wrong with you? Sorry.
You fucked it up! Sorry, Vassilis, I'll fix it!
Ηow? He said he will fix it.
Don't stick your nose! Let it go.
How can I? Let it go.
How? Iordanis, will you fix it?
[Iordanis] I will. You're not leaving till it's done.
And you'll stay longer to show him how.
Vassilis, get over yourself!
Sometimes I think that quarrelling was the closest thing to touching.
In all the years, I don't remember anyone getting punished
for doing something wrong.
Perhaps breaking the rules
was more terrifying than following them.
Once a month, I'd take the boat and go to the shore for supplies.
Coming and going twelve times a year and every time the same thought.
How I wish I could feel the water, even just once.
I see myself sitting in the middle of the boat,
and letting my body go until my face touches the water.
And then I fall inside slowly and steady.
[cry of pain]
Don't touch him!
Stretch it out.
Take off your shirt.
Don't stare at me. Wrap your hand.
Tightly.
Are you nuts? You let him work the wheel?
Vassilis, did you make him? Shouldn't he learn?
You're not playing nice.
Is that how he will learn? Tough luck!
That morning,
I untied the boat, we ventured out into the sea
and I let go of the wheel.
Hey!
