- Do you know what it means to effervesce?
Bubble up.
Be lively.
Vivacious.
Explode with passion.
Soda water, colas,
all manner of soft drink,
used to have medicinal properties.
In fact, to this day,
we still call one of them tonic.
Ah.
Though it wasn't long before the beneficial qualities
were drawn into question.
Were these caffeine-addled sugary concoctions,
sometimes enhanced with cocaine, actually good for you?
Or was it just a temporary stimulant effect?
Good in the moment, but actually
killing you slowly, over time.
The bigger soft drink companies would tell you that
they're saving you by offering you fewer calories.
If they are to be believed, calories are the single most
deadly aspect of food and drink.
(scoffs) Diet this, light that, zero whatever.
The truth being is that
the best way to approach sugary concoctions
is like so many other problems in life:
Abstinence.
Nothing about club soda will kill you.
Well, I suppose you could drown in it,
but no more easily than regular water.
I...
I filled up my pool with it, on more than one occasion.
The bubbles just effervesce,
in the most delightful parts of the body.
Oh, the wondrous foolhardy claims
of the emerging soda pop companies
purported to cure all manner of human ailments.
(businessman chuckles)
Yeah, in the end...
Bunk.
But those same companies matured over decades.
Bottling and selling what? (chuckles)
Simple carbonated and still water for mass consumption.
And all the while,
controlling the game board and all of the pieces.
The only way to win this game is not to play it.
Abstinence.
(cookie crunching)
Look at you.
You're blandly handsome.
You think you're hot shit, don't you?
Have some.
Oh, I wouldn't have brought you all this way
just to poison you again now, would I?
(chuckles) No.
I don't want to hurt you.
I want you to join the big boys.
We're an organization of like-minded individuals.
We offer full dental and medical benefits,
retirement, and...
Other benefits.
You could be running a law firm,
or a tech company, or even a bank.
No schooling necessary. No hassles.
We know how to take care of our own.
You're smart.
I was smart, once, like you.
Until I didn't have to be.
You know what I mean, right?
Of course you do. Like I said, you're smart.
Who do you do it for? Yourself?
Frankly, I don't understand you young, selfish types.
You think you're out there doing God's work. (chuckles)
I can't say why you chose the target audience that you have.
You'd probably claim it had something to do with
artistic integrity or some other such nonsense.
You think you're the only one that does what you do?
We've been doing it a lot longer than you,
and we are a lot better at it than you are.
Oh, there are those who would seek to end our way of life.
I sincerely hope you're not one of them.
You have such great potential!
I would love to see you effervesce.
If you're gonna continue to do what you do, what we do,
all we ask is that you do it the right way.
Our way.
Otherwise, you're just making it
more difficult for everyone else.
But if you decide not to join us...
Well, like I say.
Abstinence.
And remember.
We take care of our own.
Others?
Not so much.
