- I got sisters, man. - It's a thing.

It's just dinner.

No, it's not just dinner. It's Shabbat.

It's the circle of trust, okay?

Next thing you know, you guys are having sleepovers,

- your toothbrushes are getting nice and cozy... - Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa.

Next to each other, then half your closet's gone,

and, boom, you and Penny are standing at the altar,

and I'm handing you the rings.

You jump over my brother Jack in this hypothetical

as best man?

Well, I could be ring bearer. That's your choice.

There's your boy on his bench.

Maybe today will be the day he accepts treatment.

Well, keep bribing him with those sandwiches

from LaGrassa's. It's working.

Hey, Dermott.

Wake up, man. Rise and shine.

You know the drill. You got to move on.

Come on, man, I got you a sandwich.

Dermott.

12-Jake-101 to Central. We got a DOA,

sudden death, south end of the Public Garden.

- 10-4... - El Maleh Rakhamim...

shokhein bamoromim,

hamtzei menukhah al kanfei hashekhinah...

I'm just saying, guys are a funny species, you know?

Sometimes we have to leave in order to find our way back home.

Yeah, it's not that simple, Danny.

He left for D.C., but I basically told Brian to go.

Well, you both experienced trauma,

and not for nothing, you dealt with yours pretty well.

He's still running from his.

But if you and Rodgers love each other,

I know you will find your way back to each other.

Give me a second.

Hey, boss.

Feet off the desk and put your shoes on.

It's not your living room.

Yes, sir, Sergeant Detective, sir.

It's 8:15 a.m. You clocked in at 0600. Tell me three things

case-related you've done so far today.

I'll settle for two.

How about one?

You have six open cases.

What if one of the vics in those cases

was your mom or your sister?

How do you think they'd feel about

a detective sitting around

looking at TikTok videos all day?

I get it. You made your point.

Did I?

- I know. - No, he was wrong.

- But? - But praise in public, criticize in private.

- That's right. - I have been known

to lose my temper on occasion. I'll fix it.

- Well, maybe cool off a little bit before you go back in there. - Yeah.

Can't believe Dermott's dead.

I'm sorry, man. You tried.

Whatever pain he's in, it's gone now.

If it's gonna be like this, maybe I should

just stop trying.

Officers, one of those men in the green caps has a gun.

I saw it.

Hey, jerk.

- BPD. Move, move. - BPD. Stop.

Hey! BPD! Stop running!

Hey, gun! Gun!

Get it, get it.

Here, hold this. I got it.

Hey, this is 12-Jake-101 to Central.

I've got shots fired. We're at Park Street station.

We've got shots fired.

BPD! Out of the way! Out of the way!

Hey.

Boston Police! Put your hands up!

Put the gun on the ground.

I'm on the job.

You still upset about what happened in the squad room?

Maybe.

Sullivan was working the Li case

around the clock last night.

- Yeah. - He was running on fumes.

I know, but tired or not, there's no excuse

- to disrespect the squad room. - Right.

He's got his feet up on the desk, no shoes on,

then a boss walks in, and he keeps 'em there.

Oof. He deserves to be written up

for getting in your face like that, too.

Yeah. But it's not the Marines.

I shouldn't have gotten in his face either,

but I also can't let it stand.

But I encourage you

to channel Reagan royalty.

You know, what would Frank do?

What would Grandpa Reagan do?

- In this situation? - What would Frank Reagan do?

- That is a question. - Right?

Detective Silver.

Shots fired at Park Street station.

- We got to go. - Let's go.

Hey, boss.

Talk to me. What do we know?

- Jonah and Sean called it in. - Jonah.

- You okay? - Yeah. We're fine.

There were two shooters.

Two civilians shot. One critical.

One of the shooters was Jason McGee, off-duty cop.

What?

Great.

We still don't know what happened.

Sean, you okay?

Yeah, but, Dad, that guy's got two holes in his back.

I think he got shot after he fell.

Where's the shooter?

White cop, Black victim.

This looks really bad.

Bad just got a whole lot worse.

He's a cop, too.

Sir. Sir. Yeah.

Carson Wiley, new at the Boston Dispatch.

Chief Lanigan, is there an update

on Detective Baker's condition?

He's in surgery, fighting for his life.

He's a tough man.

If anyone can pull through it,

- he can. - Chief...

Sir, Officer McGee fired five rounds

in a crowded subway. Were his actions

lawful or even in line with the department's

use of force policy?

- No comment. - Chief. Chief.

- Yeah. - I covered a story about a year ago,

about an Officer McGee and his wife who were robbed at gunpoint

by three Black men in the same station, the same train.

Could this shooting of Baker

have been some sort of revenge for that past attack?

There are rumors that Baker was shot in the back.

Let me tell you something about Officer McGee...

Let me take it from here.

This is an ongoing investigation.

When we know more, you will know more.

Until then, report the facts,

not rumors or speculation.

Tell the story, not just a story.

The people of Boston deserve that.

Thank you.

Chief Lanigan, one more...

Attention, passengers...

Yes, Chief. I understand.

I will.

My phone has not stopped.

Chief Lanigan's on the warpath. We need answers.

Well, there were two shootings down here.

Let's talk about the first one.

Sean and Jonah approached two gunmen upstairs.

They apprehended the first one. The second

fled down these stairs

into this doorway, where he tried

to dump his shotgun between the train and the platform.

- He missed. - And that shotgun hits the platform and discharges,

firing at a woman, hits her leg here. At this point,

the second gunman is in the wind.

Now, there are five cameras in this station.

That one there, which would have seen everything,

and one other were vandalized,

- out of service. - Now let's talk through

the second shooting,

the officer-involved one.

Officer McGee just finished a midnight tour.

He was off duty, sitting on the train over here.

He's got his face buried in his phone.

He hears a gunshot blast. He looks up,

he sees an injured woman, sees the shotgun,

pulls out his gun, steps into the doorway here

with his badge out.

Now, on-duty DCU undercover detective.

Tremain Baker...

is right here...

waiting for the train.

Now, he hears the blast.

He pulls his gun,

starts running toward it.

Obviously, people are screaming

and it's chaos.

Everybody's running for their lives.

Officer McGee sees.

Officer Baker approaching.

He's got a gun in his hand,

but he has no color of the day headband,

nothing to indicate he's a cop.

McGee fires.

He hits Baker with the first shot.

Baker stumbles, standing right there where Lena is.

But now Baker keeps coming

and McGee keeps firing.

Four more rounds.

Baker ends up right here face down.

So Baker sees McGee's badge and thinks,

- "He can't be shooting at me, he's a cop." - Right.

But McGee doesn't see any badge on Baker,

so assumes he's a perp.

And both thoughts make sense,

but we don't know. We have not one single eyewitness

who saw what happened after McGee's first shot.

The only thing we do know is, those four additional shots

fired by McGee were at close range.

So it's possible

two of them were through and through,

which would explain the gunshot wounds in Baker's back.

- Or... - Or...

he shot him in the back

while he was lying down.

Now, we won't know until Baker is out of surgery.

Danny, put together a task force.

Bring in Sean and Jonah.

They may have seen more than they remember.

Have them do the video grunt work.

It might shake something loose.

- All right. - We need answers

before the media turns this into a racial firestorm.

There were no prints of value on the shotgun.

So what were our perps... Simon Anthony

and the guy with the shotgun...

doing with those guns?

Anthony lawyered up and isn't talking,

and shotgun guy's nowhere in these videos.

- But he didn't just disappear. - No, I'm thinking

he dipped into the tunnel and then just ran

to the next station.

Penny.

What the hell?

- Hey. - I've been blowing up your phone

all morning. Why didn't you answer?

I've just been caught up in a lot of stuff going on.

The news said a cop was shot, and they weren't giving names,

and I just... I knew you were working the Common.

But when you weren't answering your phone...

I'm sorry. I'm sorry.

You can't do that to me, Sean.

I know.

Look, I hate this, but I got to get back to work right now.

There's so much to do.

We'll talk more about this at Shabbat, okay?

- Yeah. Yeah, that's fine. - Hey. Hey.

I'm safe.

Everything's okay. I promise.

- You gonna be okay? - Yeah.

I mean, you-you got to work.

- Go. - I'm sorry.

- Bro, you got to start answering your phone. - I know.

I feel awful. She's really shaken up.

Yeah, she doesn't come from a police family like us.

This is all new to her.

It can be scary.

Hey, come check this out.

What am I looking at?

That kid... was right here.

He had a perfect view of the whole shooting.

And look at this.

Muzzle flashes. He saw every shot.

Right now he's our best witness.

Now all we got to do is find him.

What happened out there, Mike?

It's not like you to let the press get under your skin.

It didn't. I'm pretty sure McGee shot Baker in the back.

Okay, it's way too early to say that.

We don't know what happened.

You don't know McGee like I do.

He's everything Baker isn't.

Angry, cynical, no discipline.

But every incident has its own set of facts.

The most important thing is what happened in that station.

White cop with a chip on his shoulder

shoots a decorated Black cop in the back.

Only a matter of time before the protests start.

That may be,

but I make my judgments based on evidence,

not on media narratives, not on politics.

Be wise for you to do the same.

We'll see.

I offered to take McGee to meet Baker's family,

but he's not ready yet.

Yeah. What do you make of Officer McGee?

I know you've been praying with him.

What kind of guy is he?

It's hard to tell.

The incident on the train last year put him in a dark place.

He started drinking, his wife left him,

but it pushed him into the arms of God.

He was on a new path. He got sober, started going to church,

letting go of that anger that he's carried most of his career.

He's fragile right now.

Well, I'm glad you're here.

Both of these families are gonna need all the prayers

- they can get. - Amen.

So, McGee isn't talking.

He doesn't trust anybody right now.

He doesn't trust me, which makes me not want to trust him.

Well, I'm sure McGee feels like

the loneliest person on the planet.

An officer is fighting for his life right now.

- We got to get the truth. - Yeah.

I have an idea, but I need you.

Okay.

- Thanks, Rev. - Yeah.

Officer McGee.

This is Sergeant Detective Reagan.

Look, I shot a cop. I'm done. My career is over.

What good could possibly come from talking to you?

Hear me out.

Department rules actually compel you to answer questions

from a supervisor in regard to your duties

and the threat of suspension or termination.

Which means that anything you say

to me about the shooting cannot be used

against you in a criminal case.

Understand?

Okay, look.

The reverend was telling me about your spiritual journey.

I had a situation in my career

where I had to lean on my faith, too.

So I know what you're going through.

How could you possibly know what I'm going through?

Because I shot an undercover cop, too.

Look, it was back in New York.

Different circumstances,

I wasn't facing what you're facing,

but I was a hothead cop.

And it seemed like the whole world was against me.

But we're not here to hurt you.

We are here to get to the truth.

And the only way we can do that is if you trust us.

McGee.

For you. For Baker.

You got to tell us what happened.

I was sitting on the train...

I'm sorry, Carson. I don't have an update if that's

- what you're looking for. - It's not.

My source at Boston General tells me

the size and shape of the wounds in Baker's back and chest

are consistent with Baker having been shot in the back.

Doctors had to split open Baker's chest to operate.

That alone could change the size,

shape, and appearance of his chest wounds,

making it impossible to determine

entrance or exit wounds.

You need to kill that story, Carson.

People running, screaming.

Baker was coming at me with a gun.

I had no idea he was a cop. What was I supposed to do?

Did you identify yourself?

My badge was already showing.

I just kept firing until he went down.

I don't remember how many shots I fired.

McGee, is it possible

that you kept shooting at Officer Baker even after

- he went down? - What? No.

I don't, I don't remember doing that.

I wouldn't do that.

You run that story,

it will incite racial unrest in this city.

We don't know what happened yet.

- We have a duty to report facts. - Yeah.

These are facts without context.

- What's gonna happen to me? - I don't know.

But I can promise you that we will

conduct a fair investigation

and we will find the truth.

Sorry to interrupt, boss,

but, you should turn on the news.

Everyone was running and screaming.

Then this white dude came by the door

with a badge around his neck,

and he just started shooting.

He had crazy eyes.

Did this officer identify himself

or shout a warning before he fired?

Nah, man. He just started blasting.

That brother fell down on his face in front of him,

and the cop just kept shooting.

You're saying the white officer

shot the Black man in the back

while he was lying helpless on the ground?

That's not what I'm saying. That's what he did.

No justice, no peace!

No justice...

These protests are only gonna get worse.

That's why we need to charge McGee now.

The alleged witness Carter hasn't been vetted.

He was interviewed by a reporter.

There's video of him entering the station

- just before the shooting. - Doesn't mean he saw it.

He has been collared for robbery,

assaulting a police officer, and he's on parole.

That doesn't make him a liar.

His record does put his credibility into question.

An arrest brings the temperature down.

- We can sort the rest out later. - Chief, since when

are you so cavalier about taking away a man's freedom?

Especially one of your own?

We're not sending him to prison.

If you arrest McGee,

what's left of his reputation

will be destroyed forever, guilty or not.

It was never good to begin with.

McGee is no cop of the year,

but I know that Baker is your friend and that

he worked for you in DCU,

and it is obvious that is affecting your judgment.

- What? - Chief.

- Chief. - Yeah.

You can arrest McGee,

but he will walk right back out that door,

and I will not write up a complaint

until that witness has been formally interviewed.

You didn't have to come to my rescue.

I didn't.

Mayor Shaw is in a reelection year.

The last thing he wants is unrest in the streets.

I can bet you Shaw is in Lanigan's ear.

I didn't back you because you're my daughter.

I backed you because you were right.

Sarah's really feeling the heat.

There's been looting and rioting in the North End.

She thinks Lanigan is gonna shut down the task force

and give the case to IA.

You know if we let that happen,

this goes from an investigation into an inquisition.

Danny.

You have a soft spot for McGee, don't you?

Because you shot that cop.

I do not have a soft spot for McGee.

- I just don't want to see the guy get railroaded, is all. - Well, if he's guilty,

he deserves to suffer the consequences.

If he is guilty, he should be buried beneath the prison.

I'm just saying, I-I've been where he is,

and nobody believed me either,

including members of my own family.

All I had to lean on was faith,

- same as McGee. - Come on,

that trauma that he suffered on that train last year...

that could have filled him with a rage that he cannot control.

What makes you think McGee had that rage?

His words.

He literally said

he doesn't remember how many shots he fired.

At a decorated cop.

He doesn't remember if he shot him in the back?

If he was in a state of rage, he wouldn't.

You might be right.

Hey, boss. Simon Anthony,

the kid your son and his partner collared in the subway, well,

he had a bunch of cash and two cell phones on him.

This one didn't belong to him.

I'm thinking Anthony and his pal with the shotgun...

they were fleeing the scene of a robbery.

I had the data sent to your computer.

All right, well, I'll check for robbery complaints in the area,

- and I'll, get permission to run facial rec on this image. - Thanks.

Okay.

Yeah, he's showing me he got the message.

I just got to show him what kind of boss I'm gonna be.

- Texting Sarah? - Yeah.

All right, we need some good news. What do you got?

Still nothing on shotgun guy.

But we may have found something.

Okay, let's see it.

We have no idea who he is,

but this kid saw the shooting.

It's a witness.

Yeah.

- Anything else? - Yeah.

This is a screenshot

from footage from another surveillance camera

before all hell broke loose.

But at the time of the shooting, this kid

doesn't have the backpack or this bag.

He left the bag on the train when the shooting started.

Wait a minute.

The logo on this bag... that's Goddard Grocery.

This is a lunch spot from my old patrol district.

Nice work. You guys are gonna make great detectives one day.

Yes, you are.

Now, come on, come on, let's go, let's go.

Grab that bag from evidence

and do not return without that kid.

We won't.

Yes.

Sarah granted facial rec access

since this case is so high-profile.

Great. Now if we can figure out

who got robbed before the subway shooting...

We might find the second shooter.

I just found our robbery vic.

That is our vic.

Preston Churney.

Let's see.

And there's the complaint.

Victim of a robbery this morning downtown

on Adams, ten minutes before the shooting.

Two Black males, green caps.

So they were running from a stickup?

You're really good at this, Detective.

Scrip says the second perp has a gold grill

with a scar on his left cheek.

Okay. Let's see.

That's our guy.

Miles Barton, one of Simon Anthony's past codefendants.

Let's get some answers.

Let's roll.

Excuse me, sir?

Is the owner here?

You're looking at him.

We're hoping you might know this kid.

Think he witnessed the shooting in the subway

- this morning. - That's Isaac.

Does Isaac have a last name?

I'm sure he does, but not one that I know.

He's an orphan.

I caught him trying to steal some fruit from my stand.

Instead of calling the police, I took him inside

and gave him something to eat.

He's been coming by every morning since.

We found some old textbooks in his bag

that he left on the subway.

Do you happen to know where he lives or goes to school?

He lives on the street and he don't go to school.

I gave him the books to help him with his studies.

He's been in and out of foster homes

since his mom passed when he was six.

Yeah, well, is there anything else you can tell us about him?

- Anything at all? - A gang's trying to recruit him.

He's holding out, so

last week they roughed him up pretty good.

Been ducking 'em ever since.

If he happens to come by,

- please give us a call. - If we can't find him,

we'll come back in the morning.

He's got a rusty old purple bike.

You find that bike, and you'll find him.

All right, Silver, 12 o'clock. I got your six.

- Sullivan. - Yeah.

Nine o'clock. Grab two detectives, take 'em with you.

Curry, take two and get two o'clock.

Stay alert.

Barton!

Boston Police! Stop!

Turn over. Why you running?

- Give me your arm. - Hold on, hold on. Whoa, whoa, no.

Hey, he's swallowing something. Spit it out.

- I didn't swallow nothing. - Yes, you...

- Give me your arm. - He swallowed one of these.

- He's been dropping 'em all over the place. - Give me your arm.

- Looks like crack. Who knows what it's laced with? - I want my lawyer.

You're gonna spit that out right now. Spit it out.

Let's get him to EMS.

We're taking him to the hospital.

- Oscar-808 to dispatch. - He's gonna be poisoned.

I need EMS at 26913 Benton for a potential overdose.

Cancel EMS. We got to get him to the hospital now.

- Come on, come on. - Come on.

- Thank you, Mr. Mayor. - I'm confident that

this will help calm things down.

Yes, I certainly will.

Thank you. Bye-bye.

I thought we were on the same team.

I'm sorry, Chief.

It's okay, Mary.

Are you kidding me?

You snatch a witness,

pull the case from the task force,

give it to IA without even a phone call?

- I don't report to you, Sarah. - Please, sir,

for the good of the case, let the task force work

with IA.

It'll take precious time to get them up to speed.

- The city's a powder keg. - It's IA's case now.

You are making a mistake here, Chief.

A man's life and reputation are on the line,

but you've already made up your mind that McGee is guilty,

and he deserves better.

You'll do well to remember who works for who here.

Maybe I forgot because you no longer resemble

the man I thought you were.

Incoming overdose.

Male, approximately 20.

Keep that kid alive.

- What else could go wrong here? - I don't know.

Because even if Barton survives, and he saw the shooting,

it's gonna be a long time before he can tell us anything.

Yeah. That's Baker's doctor.

Yeah.

Detective Baker has a long road ahead of him,

but he's going to make it.

- He's going to be okay. - Thank God.

Oh, my God, thank you so much, thanks.

Thank God.

Looks like your prayer was answered.

Oh, this is Sarah.

And look at there. Hey, Sarah, yeah. They're here now.

- Let me call you back. - Whoa, whoa, whoa. What are you doing here?

What's going on?

We have an arrest warrant with Officer McGee's name on it.

Wait, no. This is our case. Who issued the warrant?

D.A. Silver. And per Chief Lanigan, the case

- is reassigned to IA. - You got to be kidding me.

Turn around. Turn your hands up behind your back.

- Just do what he says. - You are under arrest

for assault and battery with a dangerous weapon

and reckless endangerment.

You're just gonna perp-walk him out of the hospital

- past all them cops? - You bet I am.

So much for the truth?

This, brisket Sean's been bragging about

really lives up to the hype.

Thank you.

Okay, I'll rip the Band-Aid off.

Really, Mom?

Not even a heads-up

that Officer McGee was going to be arrested or that IA

- was taking over the case? - I don't love it,

but his witness statement and the evidence

were more than enough to charge him.

Detective Baker might be able to clear up this whole thing.

Can you just hold off

on the grand jury until he is well enough

to be interviewed?

I can wait a few days.

Thank you.

I've read a bunch of stuff online about it.

If McGee was a racist cop,

why would you want to cut him a break?

We don't know

that this was racially motivated.

Yeah, Internet's all about clickbait, you know?

It's what they do.

What we need to know is whether

the shooting was justified or if it was because

- of something else. - Some of the old-timers

at E-12 are saying that McGee should have

taken cover in the doorway

and ordered Baker to put down his firearm

before he fired, but...

Baker ran toward him with a gun in his hand.

Did not identify that he was police

and wasn't wearing the color of the day.

Yeah, but he ran toward gunfire.

- He did. - He was being brave.

You can't train courage.

But Sarah's right.

Mistakes were made,

and it has to be called out so other officers

don't repeat them.

The thing is, a year ago,

on that same train,

McGee was held at gunpoint

and forced to watch his wife be abused

while two Black men were trying

to cut off his trigger finger

so he wouldn't be able to be a cop anymore.

And I don't care who you are.

That kind of trauma changes you.

We don't know what McGee was thinking when he shot Baker.

It could've been racism.

Could've been vengeance.

Problem is, only McGee knows.

And now that IA stole the case,

we may never know the truth.

I mean, what would you guys have done?

In that position?

I don't know.

I don't think I would've shot him.

I don't know. I... I might have.

Sorry.

But that was the sequence of shots.

Less than ten seconds.

Six shots.

That's how much time McGee and Baker had

to make all the decisions they made.

And I don't give a damn what any politician says

or what any media person says.

They will never understand

what those two men felt in that moment.

What they were seeing, what they were hearing,

what they were thinking, what they were feeling

amidst all that chaos.

They will never understand

the trauma that Lena was talking about or the trauma

she's been through.

They will never understand the horror

of what it feels like

to shoot a fellow cop.

Like I did.

Was he Black?

- The cop you shot. - Babe...

It's okay, Sean.

No.

Male, white.

Mid-40s.

Waving a gun around,

did not respond to a single order

that I gave him to stop.

In a perfect world it wouldn't matter what color he was.

But this world is far from perfect.

I know the history of this city.

There is still work to do, but we've come a long way.

What happened on that subway...

Our duty is to find the truth...

so justice can be served.

Mae's right.

No matter how bad things look,

we have a D.A.,

a police superintendent,

two decorated detectives,

and two uniformed officers at this table.

If anyone can get to the truth,

it's this family.

Mr. Carter, ready for your morning show appearance?

I'm Superintendent Silver. This is Detective Silver.

We need to have a chat.

- I don't chat without my lawyer. - Okay, well,

you might need a new one

who spends more time in the courtroom

than on cable news.

Although all of the press appearances did make it

very easy to find you.

Why did you lie about seeing the shooting?

I didn't.

Falsely reporting an incident

is a felony and a violation of parole.

You're looking at three years back in jail, minimum.

So it took all night

to, comb through the footage to find this.

Image is kind of terrible, but...

I don't see no face. That ain't me.

Thing is, nobody else was wearing that jacket.

And the time stamp puts you three cars

away from the shooting

five seconds after it started.

You didn't see the shooting.

This case is national news.

You get on the stand and lie,

the D.A. is gonna go hard on you.

I'll make sure of it.

So this is your moment, Carter,

right here, right now.

You come clean, no charges.

You keep lying?

And you are gonna end up back at Walpole

having powdered eggs and stale bread

instead of that fluffy croissant.

I spill the truth right now, I get no charges?

None.

Okay, Officers,

we've been looking for this kid all morning.

Why isn't Isaac showing at the grocery store?

I don't know, maybe he heard that we were looking

- for him and got spooked. - Look, can you pull over?

I'm gonna ask these kids if they've seen Isaac around.

What's up, guys?

Boston Police Department.

Seen this kid?

- His name is Isaac. - Yeah, check the grocery...

So, yesterday Penny showed up at Command.

- Yeah. - I didn't call her

after the shooting to let her know I was okay,

and she was pretty shaken.

I heard.

You know, your mom used to worry about me

from the moment I left the house in the morning

to start my tour until the very second my key hit the lock

- when I got home. - Yeah.

And if something big happened,

I always called your mom right away

so she wouldn't worry.

I mean, you got to put yourself in Penny's shoes.

You invited her to Shabbat.

- That's a big step. - Yeah, that's what Jonah said.

Got a feeling she cares about you a lot more than you think.

It's not a bad thing.

Thank you. Thank you, guys.

One of the kids said they saw him by the park on Franklin.

Madam District Attorney, we have good news.

Carter confessed.

He made up the whole thing.

He had a grudge against the cop that sent him to prison.

Really?

You went around Carter's attorney? Do you understand

how bad that looks?

What does it matter if Carter was lying?

The case was reassigned to IA.

You interfered with their investigation.

Lanigan's hit men weren't looking

hard enough for the truth,

or they would have dug up the same footage of Carter

- we did this morning. - You know that Carter's lawyer

doesn't care about that stuff. He doesn't care about the truth.

He's gonna spin it to make it sound

like you intimidated his client to protect a fellow officer.

You kicked a hornet's nest, ladies.

You need to find another witness.

Otherwise what's going on in the streets

will go from bad to worse.

Can't believe nobody's seen this kid.

He's ducking a gang. He doesn't want to be seen. Probably feels safer

going to the grocery store in the morning

- so he won't be seen. - Wait, that's Isaac's bike.

- Looks like he dumped it in a hurry. - Park.

Three o'clock.

Oh, there he is.

Stop. Leave me alone.

Let's go.

- You're hurting me, man. - Stay down.

- Stay down. - Stop.

- I got him. You help Isaac. - Get off me.

Go ahead. He needs you.

- Watch the knife. - Man.

Come on, give me your hands.

- Hands behind your back, man. - Stop resisting.

- Hey, man. You're safe now. - Got any weapons on you?

You're safe. Isaac, right?

I'm with the Boston Police Department.

Okay? You're safe.

Let me see your arm, man.

Oh, that's not too bad.

You was putting the moves on 'em, man.

Left, right.

There you go. You're safe.

I got you.

I got you, okay?

Okay.

I saw this lady...

she was bleeding...

and a Black man running at her with a gun.

It was scary.

You're doing great, Isaac.

I ducked behind a pole, and there was another shot.

There was a white officer in a doorway, and he had a gun.

He looked scared.

The Black man was running at him, and

the officer kept shooting until they were this close.

The Black man fell.

He was moaning and making noises.

There was lots of blood.

Did the officer fire at the Black man

when he was lying on the ground?

No.

No, he, stopped when he fell.

And you're sure, Isaac?

Yeah. I'm sure.

He didn't shoot him in the back.

Based on new evidence that has come to light,

all charges against police officer Jason McGee

have been dropped.

The shooting of Detective Baker

was a tragic accident

caused by two criminals fleeing the scene of an armed robbery.

The men responsible will be prosecuted

to the fullest extent of the law.

Sir, I know you're angry. I am here to fall on the sword.

Damn right I'm angry.

You disobeyed my orders,

ignored the chain of command,

and continued an investigation I assigned to IA.

With good intentions.

We arrived at the truth. We exonerated McGee.

The truth would have come out regardless of your antics.

There will be consequences for what you've done. Bet on it.

So good to see you back in church.

Thanks for coming.

Tell your mother hello.

- Hey, son. - Grandpa. Yeah.

- Grandpa, this is Isaac. - Well,

hello there, young man. Great to finally meet you.

Nice to meet you. I enjoyed your sermon.

That was for you.

Philippians 3:13. "Forgetting what is behind

and straining toward what is ahead."

My grandpa's the one who arranged for you to stay

with the Collins family for a while.

I've known 'em a long time. They're wonderful people.

They've fostered many kids over the years, and Sister Collins,

whoa, she gonna put some meat on your bones.

And Jonah's mom's got connections to the family court,

so if you like it there,

we can pull some strings to make it permanent.

You're not alone anymore, Isaac. You got us.

Wh-Why are you guys helping me?

- It's who we are. - It's what we do.

Well, my ride's here. I got to go.

- I'll see you, Rev. - I'll see you.

- All right. - Bye.

- Hey, beautiful. - Hi.

- Nice dress. - Thank you.

I was,

I was thinking about earlier, when you...

didn't know if I was okay

and... and how worried you must've been. I'm sorry.

You know what? Thank you for saying that.

I guess I just...

I hope I didn't embarrass you.

You could never embarrass me. It was sweet.

Come here.

But I am starting to think you like me

- or something. It's so weird. - Oh, my gosh.

Guilty as charged, Officer Reagan.

Okay, let's go before this gets any sappier.

- Thanks so much. Appreciate you. - You got it.

Thanks for your hard work.

- Look at you and Sullivan, like old pals. - Yeah...

How did you end up fixing it?

We worked late, around the clock, in fact.

We talked through the Li case,

then we cracked the Li case, and then we

cracked open a bottle of whiskey to celebrate.

- Nice. - Yeah.

It's "ling xiรน."

"Ling" what?

I had an old partner who spoke Chinese, and

he said that a boss

should be "ling xiรน."

It means "collar and cuffs."

- Like collar and cuffs? - So,

the collar... it controls the direction, right?

It dictates how the rest of the shirt falls,

so a leader should set the vision

and the guidelines for the team, and the cuffs...

it's the most worn part of the shirt.

When you work with your hands,

the cuffs do all the work.

So a leader should do the heavy lifting

and lead by example.

It's "ling xiรน."

And that, Danny, is you.

If I knew how to say "thank you" in Chinese,

I would.

- So, thank you. - So,

- while you're at HQ... - Yeah.

Doing your sergeant paperwork,

us normal detectives are gonna be out enjoying some drinks.

Sorry.

Heavy is the head that wears the crown.

Hey.

- How you holding up, Jason? - It's been tough.

So many emotions over the last few days.

Well, the good thing is, Baker's doing really well.

Thank you

- for arranging this meeting. - Of course.

Guess this is it.

Thank you for everything.

And God bless you both.

You keep the faith.

I've been wanting to ask you, Danny,

that cop you shot...

did he make it?

He did.

I'm sorry you had to go through that.

I... never understood why I had to.

Until this moment.

So, you know,

I could skip the paperwork and go for drinks with you all.

- Gotcha. - What?

- You really thought I was gonna leave... - Yeah.

My grammatically challenged,

- three-finger-typing partner behind? - I did.

No, I was praying you wouldn't.
