is just when you think you know what's gonna happen,

something happens that you could have never expected.

for what they think will be the dreaded group round,

but the judges are about to throw them a curveball.

For the first time

in the history of "American Idol,"

we are going to ask you to join forces

for some Hollywood duets.

[ Cheering ]

Both of you may make it through.

You may be the lucky one.

You both may be the unlucky one.

How will you pick this other person?

Will you pick someone that has a lot of energy,

hoping that maybe they're gonna bring a lot of energy

to your show, but in fact,

they drain you for the next 12 hours and you wake up hoarse?

[ Indistinct chatter ]

You better be wise in who you pick.

These are things you gotta start thinking about. Right.

It starts tonight.

We thought we had everything planned.

It's a little tricky because it's, like, you want to pick

somebody you sound good with, but it's hard

because you don't want somebody

who's gonna overpower you in any way.

As our contestants rush to pair up,

duet teams come together in many different ways.

Amazing. Do you want to be my partner?

"Okay, I guess we'll sing together."

Yeah. Some naturally...

...others, a bit more reluctantly.

I got turned down by the last two people,

'cause they said they don't know, so...

I don't know.

One duet pairing that did know

were Louis Knight and Francisco Martin,

who first met up during genre challenge.

Hey, man. 'Sup, dude?

I'm Louis.

Oh, you're Louis? Yeah.

Oh. Francisco. Francisco?

Nice to meet you.

I've heard the judges are, like, really excited about you.

The showdown between these two contestants

was predicted by the judges back in auditions.

I think that we've got a couple of stars.

He was timeless.

♪ Whoa ♪ Lionel: Francisco was absolutely God's gift

to the show. Yeah. Yeah.

How did your audition go?

I was very, very nervous.

I don't know why I was that nervous.

I have trouble with confidence,

and, like, I've had my insecurities,

and it's better to write it on a piece of paper

and sing it out rather than just keep thinking about it.

Dude, like, you're my boy.

With no time to lose,

Louis and Francisco get straight to work on their song.

Louis ‐‐ he's just very talented, to be honest.

Like, his influences are my influences,

and that's why me and him clicked so fast.

♪ While I'm wide awake, she's no trouble sleeping ♪

As rehearsals push late into the night,

the guys seem to be on track.

Louis: I feel like we both feel pretty confident in the performance.

We just ‐‐ There are a few things

that we just need to work on.

After a few hours' sleep,

Francisco and Louis are almost ready to take the stage.

But the confidence that fueled our contestants last night

has evaporated with Francisco in the light of a new day.

It's like three or four lines

that I can't get in my head and memorize.

We can do it.

And it's like, why? Either I have a pea‐brain

or something's really wrong, like, you know?

Last night, we were on the same page and everything,

but then we all got, like... Yeah.

...completely, like, stressed out.

We'll try our best to get it together

and kind of [sighs] kind of recoup from this.

But, you know, we'll see.

I just ‐‐ This is weird.

I've never actually, like,

forgotten lyrics to a song I've known.

I do not want to mess up on that stage.

Right now, the only thing we can do

is just give it our absolute best.

Basically, we heard some rumors going around

that we were kind of being compared to each other

and we were kind of having, like ‐‐

maybe, like, having this friendly rivalry brewing.

And then we finally met, and then we just, like,

really connected with each other. [ Laughs ]

And then we were like, "You know what?

Why don't we join together?"

It was a bold, bold move.

Yeah, you have a lot more in common than you don't.

I feel like I messed up a lot.

A lot of it had to do with

'cause I couldn't remember the lyrics for some reason.

This new challenge has the judges singing its praises.

some of it was almost...

They got lost.

Usually in group rounds, there's four people

and they're all singing a little part,

so you only have to memorize a little part

if you don't know the song, you know?

Not in a duet.

You got to pull your own weight.

I think the best thing we ever did in life

I think the intriguing aspect about going from groups to duets

is it's just you two.

This is almost our little psychological test, if you will,

'cause we get to see their personality shine

Because if you find out where a person's strength is,

They really want to see teamwork in the duet,

and I'm gonna try to help him when he sings,

and he's gonna try to help me.

to show both that you can have a connection with someone

After a productive rehearsal with the vocal coach,

Madison and Peyton seem to have found their groove.

After a few hours of sleep, Madison and Peyton

continue to work on their duet at the stage rehearsal.

We're gonna go change, come back, and practice."

He's like, "Alright, cool."

Well, he didn't listen.

So, he went missing for like 30 minutes.

We've got you all scheduled for another show

that I'm gonna put on the air,

'cause this is some priceless stuff.

It's comedy, man. Just, right now,

this is the duets part that we love so much.

Well, the opening was pretty much like buckshot.

It was everywhere.

Guitar went a little different than what we practiced,

so it threw me off. Oh, okay.

Now the judges have to decide

whether the "American Idol" road for Peyton or Madison

ends tonight.

Madison: Whatever he did, it threw me off.

And I'm not sure I'm gonna be making it through due to that.

Peyton: I'm feeling horrible for her.

That's my fault. I screwed up.

I think there was just too many changes,

and it's a lesson learned.

Listen, there are moments in life when it's not gonna work.

This was not the greatest duet in life.

Yes.

Look, I just want to apologize to you.

You worked hard, and like I said,

I've been rehearsing this all day and just got in the moment,

and just...lost control.

25‐year‐old Travis Finlay is also bringing the fun

who's in Hollywood for the second time.

But this time around,

she's missing some essential support.

Genavieve: I went to Hollywood Week two years ago,

and I got cut in the solo rounds.

My sister was here with me in Hollywood

when I came for the first time.

The surprise announcement of duet performances

replacing the highly anticipated group challenge

forced Cyniah to team up with Makayla quickly.

I hear everybody out there, and I was just, like,

looking around at everybody, and it just made me emotional,

'cause I'm like, "I'm not doing enough."
