[Jackson] Alexis, could you please ask your cousin
to pass the salt?
What is happening here?
Alexis, could you please ask your father about
what happened this morning?
Alexis, please be so kind as to inform your cousin that I had
every right to tell Jed to run those cattle up
the back side of the ridge.
[Daniel] Alexis, and in what world does an oilman
talk to a cattle rancher and have any cattle moved up
the backside of any ridge?
I've been running this place just fine for a long time,
and that includes my staff.
Jed was more than happy to take my direction.
Mom!
Did I tell you that Janie wants to try riding English?
Well, that's fun.
[Alexis] Yeah. I'm going to help her take out Lucky.
[Charlene] Ah. How is your baby settling in at the stables?
[Alexis] He's so comfortable.
And I think he really likes his place.
What's not to like?
Acres of property. State of the art horse stables.
A horse's dream.
Yeah. It doesn't run itself.
Well, I have news.
This grow row project has me all excited
to get busy in the community.
I'm going to see if I can't drum up a booster group
for the school, maybe a church auxiliary.
Mom, that's great!
You totally need to join a group.
[Alexis] You must be missing that stuff.
As long as you don't get any more involved
with the Hamiltons.
Dad. It's church.
It's competition, dear. They're our competitors.
Wow.
[James] We are grateful, Tucker. We are.
You really got us out of a pinch.
About that...
Well, that doesn't sound good.
I want to help you folks out, but I'm going to ask that we
stick to your original agreement.
This was all supposed to be a temporary arrangement.
Now, your dad here said no longer than a week,
and we're nearing that deadline.
Well, that's exactly what we were hoping
to ask you about today.
Is there any way that you can extend our welcome,
just a little bit?
It's a small herd.
We'd really appreciate it. We would.
Look unless you're willing to pay the fines,
I'm going to give it to you straight, fellas.
No.
Tucker, you know we want nothing more than
to get these cattle on our land.
But the thing is, we don't have clearance from the county yet.
What's the holdup?
Oh, you know, bureaucracy.
We don't think it'll be any longer than another three weeks.
Weeks?
Yes.
Willis, we've been friends a long time,
but I need these cattle gone.
We're just asking for a little wiggle room.
We're in a bind.
I understand. I wish I could help.
[Tucker] Have you tried asking Martha?
[scoffs] Yeah. Martha's land is in the hands of the Newmans now.
Really?
Yeah.
I don't know what to tell you, fellas.
I'm sorry.
You know we can't afford these fines, Dad.
And, three weeks. What was that?
I'm just trying to buy some time here, James.
Well, three weeks or three days, we're running out of time.
We're about to be put between a rock and a hard place.
Yeah.
Can I read it to you?
Sure. What have you got?
Okay.
[Thomas cries] Okay, okay, okay, okay.
I'm still working on it, but, here it goes.
Hi, Dad.
I know it's been a while since we've seen each other,
but I really miss you.
And then I put an exclamation point,
but I can get rid of that.
-Keep reading. -Okay.
I haven't heard back since I told you about Thomas,
your grandson.
But his first birthday is coming up in a few weeks,
so I wanted to invite you to Crossroad Springs
for that very special event.
And then I was going to say,
if you're interested or if you had time.
Um, what about, if you can make it?
Yeah, if you can make it sounds way more casual
and it doesn't sound like I'm mad at him.
Or does it?
No. No, but it is okay if you are mad at him.
No, no, no, he won't come if he thinks I'm mad at him.
Tina, I can think of a million reasons why he wouldn't come.
But you're allowed to feel how you feel.
-[Thomas babbles] -Right, I know.
See.
But do you think he'll come,
like, based on this email, would you?
Look, I can't imagine why somebody
wouldn't want to meet his own grandson.
Wild horses couldn't keep me away.
But your dad is always preoccupied.
Maybe I won't send it.
[Thomas whines]
What do you think, Thomas? I don't like that either.
[Lewis baby talk] I think Mama should do
whatever she thinks is right.
Oh, that's very mature advice for a baby, Thomas.
Yeah, I think so.
Now give me a kiss.
Mwah!
What would I do without you guys?
Uh, well, you will never have to know.
[Thomas babbles]
You know, maybe I won't send it,
or I'll just wait a minute and decide later.
That's a solid decision,
but whatever you end up doing, I support,
we, we support you.
Oh, come here.
We'll support Mama.
Oh! Hey, stranger.
Layla, what's up? How's your day going?
You know,
I think nothing a little sweet and light can't fix.
[they both laugh]
So you excited about the county fair?
Yes. Janet was talking about it.
I just didn't know it was coming up so soon.
Yeah, yeah, it is.
I love fairs.
You know all the cute little animals,
their fur all blow dried for competition.
That and the food, everything's farm to table, or fried.
Wow. You think there's going to be corn dogs?
Yes, definitely. And funnel cake.
Mhm, yeah.
You do not go to the fair for a salad, I'll tell you that much.
[they both laugh]
I used to go to the fair every year with my family.
It's always such a great place for a date.
Don't you think?
I guess. Yeah.
Yeah?
I am wondering if...
Uh-huh?
Maybe we should do an information booth
for the clinic.
Yes. Work. Right.
Uh, maybe we can come up with a theme about how important
sunscreen and hydration are.
I love that. It's great.
Yeah. Okay.
Hi.
Hey.
Where can I take you for dinner tonight?
Shhhhh! Eric!
All right, come on.
I can't wait to be alone with you.
Remember, we are not dating.
I cannot afford to lose my job. Can you?
All right, all right. Understood.
So where am I...
Where am I not taking you for dinner tonight?
[James] Now what exactly are we going to do with the cattle?
[Willis] I was talking to Johnson.
He says it wouldn't be a problem to
leave him on his property for a bit.
[James] That sounds promising.
[Willis] The only thing is, we got to haul in water for them.
Dad, how is that helpful?
How do we even pull that off?
[Willis] Uh, I'm way ahead.
The Turner boys are going to lend me their tanker truck.
I can drive up to the dugout, grab the water,
and then deliver it to the troughs and field.
You're going to drive it?
Yeah.
You know, you need a special class license
to drive a water truck, right Dad?
[Willis' gets a message notification on his phone]
You don't have that, Dad.
Can you just hang on?
I'm assuming I'm the first to hear about this, because I know
Aunt Amy and Janet aren't going to be too happy with you.
It's Johnson.
He says the deal's off.
He says he doesn't want a tanker leaving ruts in his pasture.
He's out.
So, Mom, I was thinking...
We both know that Dad drives Daniel crazy.
We also know that Dad isn't giving Daniel a fair shot.
And this tension between them is getting ridiculous.
Oh, you speak the truth right there.
We just got to get them together or
force them together.
I don't know.
You know what? You're right.
Like the movie "The Parent Trap".
-What? -Okay, never mind.
We each have the other person show up somewhere where
they have to talk to and deal with one another.
Ah, like a sneak attack. Yeah, we'd set them up.
Exactly.
Now I have an idea on how to plant the seed with your father.
But Daniel's going to have to meet him halfway.
And that's where you come in.
What do I do?
Well, you are like the Daniel whisperer, right?
You two have a little conversation,
and look, your dad would be too proud to admit it,
but he misses his brother terribly.
Oh. Poor Dad.
Yeah, and Daniel needs to remember that when Henry died,
he didn't just leave behind a son.
He left behind a brother too,
a brother who never got to say goodbye.
-I'll talk to him. -Okay.
Now, we just need to find a perfect place.
Cheers to that.
[Aunt Amy] Oh, honey, that is such a double bind.
I'm sorry.
Well, I just wish someone would tell me what to do.
Oh, well, I can volunteer for that.
I think you should quit your job and be with Eric.
Very funny. You know, I'm not quitting my job, I love it.
Okay, well, then I change my mind, change my mind.
I have a different answer. This is the right answer.
Do tell.
I think you should tell Eric that you can never, ever, ever
be with him because you love your job so much
and you're not going to quit.
But it's Eric, and we're so good together.
And he gets me.
[James] I can hear them in the kitchen.
You guys, Aunt Amy, Janet, this is Michael.
Oh, Pastor Michael, it is so nice to finally meet you.
The pleasure is all mine.
-Welcome to the ranch. -Oh, thank you.
-Hi, I'm Janet. -Hi Janet, Michael.
This smells amazing.
What are you cooking? What's for dinner?
Well, it is my famous roast chicken with my potatoes,
salad from the garden.
And, Pastor Michael, I hope you are hungry
because I made so much.
Absolutely.
[Aunt Amy] Where's your dad?
Oh, don't ask.
He's probably out at the pond trying to will
a feedlot letter into existence.
I would join him if I thought it would do any good.
Anything I can do to help?
Uh, just some extra prayers. It would be useful.
That I can do.
Um, what exactly is a feedlot letter?
Oh, it's just a formal permission to keep
a certain number of cows, as determined by the county.
They keep tabs on your cows?
[Aunt Amy] They have to.
They need to make sure that the cattle are all well kept, that
they've got the right amount of land and food and water.
And it also helps people from stacking the deck.
Yeah, and our dad thinks he can.
He's just trying to be forward thinking.
Well, and it's all of our jobs to make sure that his thinking
doesn't get us onto the wrong side of the county rules.
Whew. That is a lot.
Yeah.
Welcome to ranching!
James, would you like to say grace?
Oh, I would love to.
But Michael here has to earn his dinner.
It would be an honor. Thank you.
Um, just before I do, I hope this is all right.
I'd like to share a little bit of news with you.
Just in the spirit of breaking bread and
here in this beautiful home filled with love and family.
You asked me what brought me out to Crossroad Springs.
I didn't think I could say this over the phone.
I proposed to Gloria, she said yes,
and we'd like you to officiate our wedding.
Michael, congratulations. I would be honored.
Cheers!
That's wonderful!
And now, I can say grace.
Hello, sweetheart.
Are you trying to butter me up?
Can't a loving wife bring her hard working husband
a frosty root beer at the end of the day?
Now, if this is another ambush about getting along with Daniel,
you can save your breath.
Not at all.
In fact, I'm starting to see where you're coming from
with all that.
-Oh you are? -Oh yeah.
That boy can be very stubborn sometimes.
Did something happened that I should know about?
No. I've just been thinking a lot about his attitude lately.
That boy is nothing but attitude.
Exactly.
It's disrespectful the way he doesn't hear you out.
After all, you've got a vision.
I do, I do.
I'm only looking out for the family, which includes Daniel.
I know.
You are just honoring your brother by thinking big.
And, I don't know, Daniel is just caught up in
all the details of the cattle and the crops.
He just can't see the priorities,
you know what I mean?
I appreciate what you're saying, honey,
but the ranch does need a head of operations.
But that's you.
You should be in charge, as far as I'm concerned.
Nah, I'm more of a big picture guy.
And what Daniel does is...
Superfluous. Unnecessary?
I was going to say vital.
He's lugging around hay all over the place
and digging in the dirt.
Well, vital in keeping that side of things going.
Daniel looks after the finances for the ranch.
And he's a signatory for the banks and the lawyers.
While he does that
that allows me time to handle our personal finances.
Yours and mine.
You know, my plan is for him to do the work,
keeping the ranch up and running.
He'd be doing it my way, of course.
Of course.
But then that would allow me to make arrangements
for the future,
make sure that this ranch is as successful as possible.
Okay, well, I, I didn't know all that.
I guess we'll be stuck with him for a little while longer.
But still, the way he's always coming after you at every turn.
Ah, maybe not every turn.
Look, the boy has been ranching since
he could fit into his first pair of boots.
You know, I actually thought that if we could get along,
then we might be able to better unite against the Hamiltons.
Get along?
Jackson Newman, the way that brain of yours works
never ceases to amaze me.
You know, sometimes I think you're a genius.
Well, I don't know about that.
Uh, by the way, Alexis is keen to show you some of her
horse moves in the arena tomorrow.
Do you think you could be there for her?
Of course. Anything for my little girl.
Good.
[Michael] You have a charming place here, Maggie.
Thank you.
Yeah, it was always my dream to open up my own bakery
in the community I grew up in.
Well, it looks amazing.
And James here tells me that you do a lot of outreach work, too?
Yeah, our food pantry.
[Maggie] We're really excited to see how things go
once we officially open.
There can be such a stigma around this idea
of receiving help.
Yeah, but the way that Maggie brings people together,
she makes everybody feel like family.
It's off to a really successful start.
Well, part of what makes it so successful is having community
partnerships, like the cowboy church to help spread the word.
[Maggie's phone buzzes]
Is everything okay?
Yeah. Yeah.
Michael, it was so great meeting you.
The pleasure was all mine.
If you'll excuse me.
What happened between you two?
Nothing.
James...
We're just good friends, that's it.
I thought you liked her. I thought maybe you guys were...
I did, I do. She's...
Look, she's wonderful.
Okay, that's great. So what's the problem?
Okay. After my last relationship with Heather,
which really taught me a lot, I just need to make sure
I'm on the same page with somebody
before I get into a relationship, that's all.
Right now, I just need to focus on the congregation
and the ranch.
Well, I completely understand.
I know this isn't easy, especially with Heather
being the maid of honor and having to see her again.
If you want to fill up their water buckets,
I can finish up here.
You know that this isn't a chore to me.
I love working with the horses.
[chuckles] I bet you do.
Huh.
That's my father on Wind Rider.
What a beauty.
Yeah, he loved that horse.
He would have brought it right into the house
every night for dinner if my mom would have let him.
I take it that never happened?
No.
Although we did set up a table down here once.
Yep. Had dinner right beside Wind Rider.
I was five years old, so I thought it was great.
Yeah, my dad said Uncle Henry had a way with horses
like no one he's ever seen.
And he also taught him how to jump fences, too.
Oh, he would teach you, whether you wanted to learn it or not,
he was going to teach you.
So he was tough, huh?
Yeah. He was full of grit and patience,
especially with me.
Yeah, my dad said that, too. He really admired Uncle Henry.
Yeah. Too bad that admiration didn't turn into friendship.
Yeah, I know.
I think he has regrets about that.
Especially because he didn't get to say goodbye
to his only brother.
I think that's really sad.
Yeah, I could see how that could affect him.
Yeah. My dad does have a tough exterior,
but family means more to him than you know.
Oh, I can tell that he loves you and Charlene.
No, I'm talking about your side of the family.
Yeah, I think he sees you and
how much you look like his brother.
And it brings up feelings that he doesn't know what to do with.
But I really do wish that I met Uncle Henry.
He would have loved hanging out with you, and Lucky.
But he would have made fun of you
because of that English saddle riding thing.
All right.
Well, actually, that reminds me.
I'm going to go jumping with Lucky tomorrow.
I was wondering if you want to come by and watch?
Yeah, I'd love to.
Great.
All right. We'll see what you got, huh?
[Alexis laughs]
I'll see you tomorrow.
[Daniel] See you tomorrow.
Oh, you should have seen Willis this morning with Thomas
when you were at the market.
I think that little boy is the only one
who can lift Willis' spirits.
Thomas loves Willis.
He's got Dad wrapped around his tiny little finger.
Yeah.
And who knew Dad would be such a good grandpa in waiting?
Hey.
[baby monitor goes off]
Tina?
I'm just going to go check on him.
I'll be right back.
Sure.
Did I say something?
No, honey, it's nothing you did.
I think Tina's feeling a little sensitive
about the grandpa issue right now.
Yeah, sure, she's so far away from her family.
Yeah, but I don't think that's it.
[door opens]
Hey, I'm so sorry if I said something to upset you.
No, it's okay.
It's, um...
I'm just having some trouble with Thomas' real grandfather.
Oh. I'm sorry.
I just really want him in Thomas' life.
That's completely understandable.
I wrote him an email, I haven't sent it yet,
inviting him to Thomas' first birthday.
But if he doesn't come, I just,
I don't think I can face that disappointment again.
Oh.
Tina, no matter what happens, we're here for you, okay?
Absolutely.
You know, this godparent thing extends to you too.
Thanks, guys.
Ready?
Yeah.
James.
Yeah?
I'm sorry that I got us into this mess.
It's all right, Dad.
You were just doing what you thought was right.
Even if my head's not screwed on right all the time?
Yes, even then.
I just don't know what we're supposed to do next.
Well, we got to bring them home.
Tucker, let's load them up.
[Eric] So I've been thinking...
You know what if this whole platonic only friends thing
is actually a gift?
Intriguing. Say more.
Okay, hear me out.
When we were dating, we got into some pretty tricky territory
imagining our futures together.
Only because it wasn't clear that you were staying.
Yes, this is true.
But still, there was this unspoken tension
where neither of us could say exactly what we felt.
But now that we're just friends,
we can get to know each other better without any worries.
-Mm. -Oh?
Okay, so does that mean that I can tell you about my dream
of going vegan and starting a cat rescue?
Exactly right.
And I can tell you about my idea to start a sports injury clinic,
and, you won't laugh at me.
Wait, seriously?
Oh, yeah. It's, I don't know.
That's a fantastic idea.
No, no. It's a bit delusional.
We don't have the population to support it.
You want to do it here in Crossroad Springs?
Yeah. That's a bad idea, right?
No, not at all.
I mean, we may not have the big sports teams, but
if you go for a wide reach,
you'll have people from all over.
Right, yeah.
Every tourist mountain biking through the woods
with no experience.
Yeah. That's exactly what I was thinking.
I would love to consult for you.
Wow, this is so great.
I did not think you'd react this way.
You know how passionate I am about my community.
I have always loved that about you.
Anything tempting you?
-No. -No.
Let's see here. Layers of vanilla cake. That's great.
They got a strawberry love cake now.
Wow.
And the chocolate hard tart with a decadent dark chocolate
and a buttery crust.
Oh, we could share that one.
Or we could have both, if you want.
For the record, I don't want to start a cat rescue.
I figured.
And the vegan thing,
I literally grew up on a cattle ranch.
Understood.
So I can't do this.
I can't sit here and pretend anymore.
Because we have so much in common, Eric,
and I really want to be with you.
And this whole friend charade is way too painful.
Um, and I think we both know what needs to happen.
One of us quits or we break up.
And I know that we both value our careers, so,
I think the choice is clear.
Janet. Janet.
Come on, Lucky, let's do this.
Whoo! That's my baby girl.
Come on, yeah!
[Daniel] She's a natural.
[Charlene] It's in her blood.
I wish my dad could have been here to see this.
Yeah, I know.
From what I've heard, Henry would have loved this.
Yep.
Hey, sweetheart.
She looks great out there.
Yes she does.
You know, I got some more work I need to do.
Jackson Newman,
your daughter has requested your presence here.
That's fine. I'll go.
No. She has told me herself that she is sick to death
of all the tension and bad blood.
It's stressing her out.
Now we're all Newmans. Why can't we get along?
I don't want to let Alexis down.
Me neither.
Nice!
I think riding the terrain out here has made her even sharper.
And, uh, maybe the pointers you've been giving her
haven't hurt.
I don't know about that.
You know, she's confident, like her father.
[quietly] Parent trap complete.
Uh, pardon?
Nothing.
Whoo! Nice job!
[Jackson] Lucky!
Tina.
Tina, he said dada.
He did?
Yeah. It wasn't even gibberish. He said it clearly.
Oh!
I wish she could have heard him.
Oh, me too.
But I have a feeling he'll probably say it again.
[Lewis] Maybe you should take a break for a little.
Not everyone answers their email every day.
Especially someone like your dad.
No, I know, you're right.
Try to put him out of your mind.
If he gets back to you, great.
If he doesn't, you're still having your best life.
Look, I know you're trying to manage my expectations Lewis,
but you don't have to.
I might just have to be sad for a bit.
I need to feel my feelings.
Of course. I just want you...
Can you just, you love me
and you don't want to see me get hurt.
Now, what is wrong with that?
Absolutely nothing.
[incoming email notification]
Oh! It's him.
That's great.
[Tina reading email] I would love to meet my grandson
on his first birthday.
Can't think of a better time to do it.
I'll do my best to be there.
He's coming!
I'm really happy that he got back to you.
I just think that maybe we
shouldn't count on it a hundred percent.
Oh, I know it's still probably only 50-50 that he'll show.
I know that's just this thing that he does.
[James] Well, this is not great, that's for sure.
No, these cattle were supposed to help bring us in more money,
not put us on the wrong side of the county.
What a situation.
We finally have new stock,
and have to keep them under cloak and dagger.
I know.
But I am telling you guys,
I still believe these cows are our future.
Or the ruin of us.
We're still paying for the digging and maintaining
of the pond.
And the price of breaking the law, it's a lot steeper.
I really thought that Tucker was going to be more helpful.
You know me too.
We've been good to Tucker.
We helped him tend their crops when his dad was in a bad way
a few years back.
We fed all his crew.
So now, I just have to figure out a way to get through
the next few weeks and not have anybody know about it.
Oh, I'm so uncomfortable with this, Willis.
I don't want any part of it.
I can't, I'm part of the Ranchers' Association now.
What are they going to think?
Oh, so now you want out of the loop? Come on, Amy.
[James' phone rings]
Well, no, it's not what I'm saying. I just...
Um...
[phone continues to ring]
I'm sorry to interrupt everyone.
I have to take this.
[James] Hi. I'm sorry I haven't called you back...
Who's that?
Ohhh!
[James on phone] Yes, Heather. Michael shared the news.
Maid of honor! That's a big title.
I've been wanting to tell you for weeks.
Okay, but Michael insisted on giving you the news in person.
Well, I'm happy for them, I am.
And how are you doing? How's Ryan?
Oh, uh.
Ryan and I broke up a while ago.
Oh, I'm sorry
No, don't be.
We weren't good for a long time, but look,
I already talked to Michael about it.
Well, you sound like
you're in a really good place with everything.
You sound happy.
Yeah, I am, I'm really happy.
I love working at the church, and Gloria and I have gotten
even closer planning her wedding, of course.
So yeah, it's been nice.
You sound like you have your hands full.
Especially because they want to go all out with this one.
Yeah, they are, but, you know, I'm not doing it alone.
She's got four other bridesmaids,
so we're all coordinating everything together.
But, you know, choosing an officiant is a really big deal.
They're so thrilled that you're coming back for the service.
Of course.
How could I say no to Michael? He's one of my best friends.
And he said they want to have, what,
125 people for the service and reception?
Yeah, yeah, it's a nice size.
And he said they want to do their own vows too.
So I was thinking it might be nice to reach out to Gloria
just to see how she feels about everything.
That was exactly what I was going to ask you.
Look, she's nervous to speak in front of everyone, so I think,
you know, if you talk to her first, maybe that would help.
[Heather] I think it would make a world of a difference.
I had a feeling.
Sometimes we need a little extra support
so the heart can say what it really needs to say.
I couldn't agree more.
Anyway, I'm excited for us to work on this together.
[James] Yeah, me too.
Take care.
[James] You too.
Bye.
[Eric reading] Dear Dr. Layla Larkin,
Please accept this letter as a formal notification
that I am resigning from my position
as General Physician.
Okay. [chuckles]
You have raised one smart kid.
That's all Charlene. Alexis is just like her mother.
Well, she definitely knows what's best for her family.
Whether we can see it or not.
Yeah.
I am proud to call you family, son.
Sorry. I mean, Daniel.
I know you're not my son.
But I'm your brother's son. And he was a good father.
I don't mean to disrespect my brother.
I miss him.
Alexis said that maybe you miss him too.
[sniffles]
You know, sometimes I look at you and all I see is Henry.
He was stubborn.
Bullheaded.
He was loving.
He always put family first.
So I don't know whether to fight you or hug you.
I loved my brother.
You need to know that.
[Jackson's phone rings]
[phone continues to ring]
Excuse me. I need to take this.
[Jackson] Hey.
[Jackson] Yeah.
Our lawyer, huh?
Well, well, well, what do we got here?
[Jed] Same cows.
[camera clicks]
[Jed] I could have sworn they were supposed to be
on Tucker's land.
[camera clicks]
[Jed] Willis, what are you up to?
[camera clicks]
