(The Lament of Autumn)

(Episode 20)

(Yu Changxuan, the New Deputy Commander-in-Chief of the Yu Army,) (Had a Secret Talk with Kurata Ichiro the Colonel General of the Japanese Army)

Why is Fifth Young Master Yu getting so close

to the Japanese all of a sudden?

Nowadays, almost all warlords are

colluding with foreign powers.

Raising an army needs money, right?

Going to battle requires firearms and ammunition, right?

Everything in this world

can be concluded as a big business.

Doesn't that make him

like the President,

despised and cursed

by everyone for the rest of his life?

Shut up.

You've got no proof,

yet you're talking nonsense

and gossiping here?

It's already in the newspapers.

The whole city is talking about it.

Why can't we?

Did you see it with your own eyes

or hear it with your own ears?

This is Fifth Young Master Yu's Xiangxi Hotel.

Every one of us

is making a living here.

If anyone dares to slander Fifth Young Master Yu again,

I'll request Master Jin

to kick them out

without exception.

(Xing Newspaper)

(Nanhuai)

Who is this big shot?

It's said to be Military Governor Chu, a higher-up.

-Step back! -Back! Back!

(Nanhai Military General Staff Department) -Step back! -Back! Back!

(Nanhai Military General Staff Department)

Down with imperialism!

Down with imperialism!

Down with the traitor!

Down with imperialism!

(Nanhuai Army Headquarters)

(Loyalty, Filial Piety, Integrity)

It's been years, (Loyalty, Filial Piety, Integrity)

yet the layout of your office (Loyalty, Filial Piety, Integrity)

hasn't changed a bit. (Loyalty, Filial Piety, Integrity)

(Loyalty, Filial Piety, Integrity)

Seeing these things (Loyalty, Filial Piety, Integrity)

brings back so many memories.

You wrote these words—loyalty,

filial piety, and integrity for me.

(Loyalty, Filial Piety, Integrity)

I've engraved them in my mind (Loyalty, Filial Piety, Integrity)

(Loyalty, Filial Piety, Integrity) and dare not forget them. (Loyalty, Filial Piety, Integrity)

and dare not forget them.

We of the older generation

know honor and integrity.

We won't collude

with dangerous enemies

just for some personal interests,

let alone be disloyal and unrighteous.

Today's youngsters

(Loyalty, Filial Piety, Integrity) Today's youngsters (Loyalty, Filial Piety, Integrity)

are really unruly. (Loyalty, Filial Piety, Integrity)

(Loyalty, Filial Piety, Integrity)

Military Governor Chu.

If you trust me,

I hope you'll trust Changxuan, too.

A father knows his son best.

This boy will never do anything to harm

the great cause of the country.

It's not about whether I believe it or not.

But I must give the authority

an explanation.

(Loyalty, Filial Piety, Integrity)

So today, I must (Loyalty, Filial Piety, Integrity)

take Changxuan away (Loyalty, Filial Piety, Integrity)

(Loyalty, Filial Piety, Integrity) to the Sujing Military Court (Loyalty, Filial Piety, Integrity)

to the Sujing Military Court

for a public trial.

We'll see if he

really has

any intention of treason.

Changxuan. Changxuan!

You absolutely cannot go.

On your way there,

if Chu Wenfu has already decided to kill you,

who could possibly stop him?

Changxuan!

Down with the traitor!

Down with imperialism!

Down with the traitor!

Down with imperialism!

Down with the traitor!

-Down with the traitor! -Down with the traitor!

How rude of you.

How can you handcuff

Deputy Commander-in-Chief Yu?

Military Governor, we are just following the rules.

Deputy Commander Yu, my apologies for any offense.

-Down with the traitor! -Down with the traitor!

-Down with imperialism! -Down with imperialism!

-Down with the traitor! -Down with the traitor!

-Please. -Down with imperialism!

-Down with the traitor! -Down with the traitor!

-Down with imperialism! -Down with imperialism!

-Down with the traitor! -Down with the traitor!

Down with the traitor!

-Down with imperialism! -Down with imperialism!

Down with the traitor!

Down with the traitor!

Down with the traitor!

Yu Changxuan.

Yu Changxuan!

Down with the traitor!

Yu Changxuan!

Yu Changxuan!

Yu Changxuan!

Stay back! Get out!

No entry!

No entry! Stay back!

Down with the traitor!

Down with the traitor!

Yu Changxuan!

Yu Changxuan.

Yu Changxuan!

Stop there!

Don't touch her!

Yu Changxuan.

What are you doing here?

I don't believe

you would collude with the Japanese.

Who are you?

How dare you hinder

the execution of official duties

outside the army headquarters?

You shouldn't be here.

I know you had dinner

with the Japanese because of me.

I don't believe you would compromise

your principles for this.

Don't be so confident.

You think you know me well?

Boren! Yes, sir!

Take her away.

Yu Changxuan.

Come on, let's go.

Let go of me!

Everyone,

after the battle in Luanjiang,

quite a lot of local armies

wanted to join the Yu Army.

But Fifth Young Master Yu

has laid down clear rules—

no opening railways

and ports to the Japanese,

no selling weapons

or minerals to the Japanese,

no leasing

land to the Japanese.

These 3 rules were

all published in the newspapers.

(Down with Japanese Imperialism!)

I work at the Xiangxi Hotel. (Down with Japanese Imperialism!)

I've seen the Japanese approach

Fifth Young Master Yu for cooperation several times,

but he rejected them all.

If he really wanted

to collude with the Japanese,

why would he wait until today?

Ye Pingjun,

you're an outsider.

What right do you have to interfere in my affairs?

Yes,

I am an outsider.

Commander Yu,

even I, an outsider,

know that Fifth Young Master Yu

would never do this.

As his father,

don't you know him better than I do?

Don't you know his character and ambitions?

Zhongquan,

are you just going to let a little girl

mess around here?

Boren!

Take her away.

Hurry...

What are you doing?

Let's go, let's go.

Hear me out first.

What's the rush? Come on.

Deputy Commander Yu,

we can't delay any longer.

Get in the car.

No, don't go!

Don't go! Just look!

Wait.

Military Governor Chu.

Changxuan can't go with you.

What do you mean?

Since this matter

happened in Nanhuai,

It's only right

to get to the bottom

of it in Nanhuai.

Do you agree?

Zhongquan,

you'd better

think this through.

Military Governor,

Changxuan is my only son

and the future commander-in-chief

of the Yu Army.

As his father,

I cannot

risk anything happening to him.

If he is to face a court-martial,

I should be the one to escort him there.

If he is guilty,

I should also

stand in the dock beside him.

Yu Zhongquan,

you are openly disobeying orders!

What are you doing?

Commander-in-Chief!

Commander,

please review the documents.

(Archive)

Actually, Fifth Young Master Yu (Archive)

knew Takahashi

and Kurata Ichiro's true purpose

from the very beginning.

Takahashi

claims to transport cotton for spinning,

but in reality,

he's trying to smuggle tungsten back to Japan.

How dare they smuggle

right under our noses?

That's all the more reason for me to cooperate with them.

For what?

Only by pretending to cooperate with them

can we swap

this batch of tungsten

before their freighter leaves the port

and stop them

from delivering the raw materials for guns

back to Japan.

Changxuan,

this is extremely risky.

What if word gets out that we are

trading with the Japanese army?

Despite its risk,

we must do it.

We absolutely can't let the Japanese

smuggle our raw materials

to make guns.

Commander, Governor,

we have seized the tungsten.

It is stored in the Nanhuai Port's warehouse,

ready for inspection at any time.

He really is innocent.

Changxuan,

if that's the case,

why didn't you tell us so earlier?

I didn't want to alert the enemy.

Before the seizure of tungsten,

there couldn't be the slightest slip-up.

Mr. Chu,

you specifically made a trip here for nothing.

Please don't blame me.

You did this for the greater good of the nation.

How could I possibly blame you?

Come on, say thank you to Mr. Chu.

Thank you, Mr. Chu!

Military Governor, you've gone

to so much trouble

coming all the way here for this matter.

Thank you for your effort.

Would you like to stay a few more days

and join me for a few drinks?

No, thanks.

I still need to go to Sujing

to report this matter to the higher-ups.

Understood.

Let's take a rain check? Sure.

Deal? Deal.

Nice.

Alright,

go do your work.

I'm Zhou Tai from Yu's Residence.

Is there any news about Fifth Young Master Yu?

Please continue to look for him.

Madam,

there are still no updates.

Seems like

I have to go to the army myself.

-Mom. -Mom, calm down.

The situation

still remains unclear now.

What else do you need to know about the situation?

Chu Wenfu has already

gone to the army to demand they hand him over.

He came prepared,

with an aggressive approach.

I can't just sit back

and watch him take my son away

without doing anything!

-Mom, Mom. -Mom.

You can't go, Mom.

Say no more!

Get the car ready. Yes, Madam.

Mom.

You're back, Young Master.

The Young Master is back!

Changxuan? Mom.

You're finally back.

Did you get hurt?

Mom,

I'm fine.

Changxuan, you have no idea.

Mom's been worrying about you

and hasn't slept properly for days.

I had the kitchen stew some tonic soup for you.

Go take a bath,

get changed, and then come to drink it.

Sorry for making you worry, Mom.

I'll go, then.

Go ahead.

Young Master, this way.

Feel easy now?

He's finally back.

Don't touch her!

You shouldn't be here.

Boren! Yes, sir!

Take her away.

Come on, let's go.

Mom, I'm heading out to get your medicine.

Don't be out too late.

Why did you help me today?

You risked your life

to save me and my mom before.

No matter what,

I couldn't just stand by and watch.

That's not what I want to hear.

But that's all I have to say.

Yu Changxuan,

what are you doing? Let me go.

I want to hear you say

that you have feelings for me.

Just say it.

Say that you have feelings for me.

Mr. Yu,

I just wanted to express my gratitude to you.

There was nothing more to it.

Is it fun fooling me like this?

Seeing me swallow my pride and beg you,

do you feel pretty smug?

I told you ages ago—

if you have no feelings for me,

then disappear from my world completely.

How could you come and help me today?

Ye Pingjun.

How can you torture me like this?

I don't get it.

I really don't get it.

(Fuxingde Famous Tea)

I just want to hear you say it.

Just say it.

Say that you have feelings for me.

You've obviously taken things

out of context in this article.

I gave you the photo

not for you to twist the facts!

Yu Changxuan is a warlord.

Warlords like him always use

their armies to consolidate their power.

They're greedy and cruel.

He is the first target

we need to eliminate.

Should we still

stick to morality and rules

when dealing with people like him?

But that doesn't justify twisting the truth

or framing people!

This goes against

the original purpose of our paper!

We're seeking the truth,

not fabrication!

That depends on the target.

There was nothing wrong

with the way we handled this.

There's no point in arguing about it now.

But I will not

allow you to do this again.

Pingjun.

What are you doing here?

I can't believe

it was you who used the photo

to frame Yu Changxuan.

Why are you so worked up?

You were very brave today.

You went alone

to the Yu Army headquarters,

defending Yu Changxuan

and clearing his name.

Yes.

I did it.

What do you mean by that?

Nothing.

That's right.

After all, the two of you...

The two of us?

Xueting,

I have

explained to you many times

that nothing ever happened

between Yu Changxuan and me.

Pingjun,

I have no right to blame you,

because I know that

you did all this

for me, and you were

forced to play along with him.

But listen, for Yu Changxuan,

no matter what I have to do,

even if it disgusts you,

I will make sure he goes to hell.

But that's

in the past.

I don't want it to be stuck in your heart

like a thorn!

It has made you lose your mind,

Jiang Xueting!

Are you worried about me losing my mind,

or are you worried

that I will deal

with Yu Changxuan by all means?

Xueting.

If there's no trust

left between us

at all,

what's the point

of us being together?

Hands off me!

(Nanhuai Army Headquarters)

What on earth are you looking at?

I'm looking at Fifth Young Master Yu.

Think about it.

He's waited so long for this,

and Ye Pingjun finally

risked her life to save him.

How could he not be excited?

How could he not have expectations?

What a pity.

The two of them are

both so stubborn.

Why are they so obstinate?

All they need now is a little help

from Cupid,

and they'll be together.

That's all you've been

thinking about the whole morning?

Oh, my goodness.

This is what really matters, okay?

You blockhead.

It's a waste of time

talking to you about this.

Tell you what,

Fifth Young Master Yu's ship of love

still needs me to keep it from sinking.

Bro,

wish me luck.

Boren, are you asking for a beating?

Here's the thing.

This year,

the maple leaves at Baidu Bridge

have turned red again.

Don't you want to go

take a look?

I'm not interested.

Yeah,

as they say, a lovely view is best enjoyed with a beautiful lady.

How about

you go together with Miss Ye

to enjoy the view?

How many times do I have to tell you?

Don't bring her up in front of me.

It's one rule for you

and another for everyone else.

Be honest with yourself— have you ever

truly let go when it comes to her?

I've completely let it go this time.

You simply can't do it!

Look, you two have risked your lives

saving each other.

Since you've already entrusted your lives to each other,

I just don't understand why

you two can't be together!

From the day I met you,

I knew you were a man with great vision,

never dithering

or leaving things hanging.

I don't believe you're

too scared to see her.

Let me tell you,

Miss Ye has already agreed to go.

Whether you go

or not is up to you.

Women's drama club?

Well, my distant cousin

is preparing for her debut performance.

But they ran into

a serious script problem at the last minute.

You're quite famous for playwriting,

so I came to you.

I'd better pass. Wait.

We've known each other for so long.

No matter what,

you should do me a favor, right?

How about this?

Tonight at 7:00, let's meet

in the Linyuetai private room at Taifeng Restaurant.

I will

send a car to pick you up.

It's a deal.

Thank you.

(Taifeng Restaurant)

This way, please.

See?

For important matters,

I, Boren, am the really reliable one to count on.

Leave it to someone else,

and it'll be screwed up.

It was Li Boren

who asked me to come and help.

I didn't know you were also here.

I'm leaving right now.

Hold on.

Since you're here,

watch the fireworks with me.

Consider it...

our final farewell.

For a long time,

there were only 3 things that mattered to me—

the army,

military power,

and weapons.

I once said that I'd go from having

not a single soldier

to taking over the entire Yu Army

and marching straight to Sujing.

To achieve this goal,

I would do whatever it takes.

All I ever thought about

was weighing the pros and cons

and making trade-offs for benefits.

I always believed

that so-called love was a weakness,

something that held you back

from progressing to success

and made you lose control of yourself

and lose your mind.

But I didn't expect that

you'd become the only exception.

When I heard that you were getting engaged,

I locked you up in Fengtai against your will.

I told myself that

as long as I kept you by my side

and treated you well day after day,

you would eventually be moved by me.

But I underestimated your pride.

The moment I saw you

lying in that pool of blood,

I finally understood

that I was wrong.

I finally realized that

I couldn't keep you with me after all.

I had to let go.

When I was fighting on the front lines,

I wasn't some invincible hero

as everybody said.

I stared death in the face time and again.

What supported me to rise

from the bloody battlefield

was the hope to go back to see you.

After everything that's happened,

I have finally seen through it.

You were right.

We are

worlds apart,

never meant to truly cross paths.

The gap between us

can never be bridged.

Sorry, Yu Changxuan.

I don't know how to respond

to your feelings.

Ever since we met,

my life has completely

gone off course.

You don't need to feel any pressure.

When the fireworks end,

I will disappear

from your world for good.

And then,

I won't show up in your world again.

And you will no longer

be in my world either.

(Though miles apart, we share the same falling snow.)

(We may consider it our way of growing old together.)

I've only been in Tianjin for a few days.

How did this happen?

Yu Changxuan suddenly asked

to cancel the engagement with Ziyi.

She came home and cried all night,

smashing everything in sight.

She hasn't eaten or drunk in days.

She refused to see the doctor

and even kicked him out.

I was at my wits' end,

so I called you.

Ziyi.

Ziyi,

it's Dad.

Ziyi,

I've heard everything.

Don't worry!

I will definitely make the Yu family

give you an explanation.

Listen to me

and eat something first.

Have something to eat, Ziyi.

You are such a catch.

There are plenty of talented young men

for you to pick.

Why waste your tears

on a heartless man?

Here,

eat something.

Eat something, Ziyi.

Dad.

You know what?

I've made such a huge compromise.

I swallowed my pride

and gave up

my dignity and self-respect.

But he still asked to break up with me.

Nonsense!

Even if you agree,

I still won't allow it.

Yu Changxuan

used us, and then cast you aside,

and humiliated you like this!

I

definitely will

make him pay for this!

Ziyi,

with your dad backing you up,

Yu Changxuan will definitely

change his mind.

It's pointless.

He's made up his mind.

No one can change it.

He has already

fallen for Ye Pingjun.

Who is Ye Pingjun?

The girl who injured

Ziyi's face last time.

It's her again!

Pingjun!

Take out those sweaters from my closet

that I don't usually wear.

It's sunny today.

I want to air them out in the sun, so they'll be warm to wear.

Pingjun?

Pingjun!

Mom!

On my way.

Isn't this

the sachet where Mom keeps her jade pendant?

Mom.

We used to have a jade pendant

with a bamboo leaf pattern carved on it.

Do you remember it?

You mean that one?

Two years ago, our roof was leaking,

and I pawned it

to fix the roof.

(Hall of Heavenly Kings)

Fifth Young Master Yu,

obsession is like fire.

Only by letting go

can one find peace.

Without this light,

the road ahead would be too cold.

There are quite a few people here to pray today.

Yeah,

Fifth Young Master Yu, you've graced our temple so much.

It is truly a blessing for us.

Please.

(Prayer)

(Prayer)

The body returns to dust,

but true love never fades.

Thank you, Bodhisattva, for blessing his safe return from the battlefield.

Otherwise,

I would never have the chance

to thank him in person.

I have come again specifically to express my gratitude.

May we both find peace from now on.

May everything go well for him.

Abbot,

where did these prayer sachets come from?

They're from the worshippers who have made

oil offerings over the past month.

I want to see the list.
