Original subtitles

Previously on When Calls the Heart. What's going on? We know that the eagle

coin was found at a poker game in Union City. The Toddy Davis. Maybe we can do

business. The cattle crossing has contaminated the stream where the salmon

spawned. Does that girl not know any other songs?

It's this new curriculum where everything is led by the student's

curiosity.

There's something about the autumn air.

There's an almost magical sense of possibility.

My students constantly inspire me, and their own curiosity is taking them

further than I could ever imagine.

Is it this way?

I don't know.

Looks like it.

I think we're supposed to be here, and I'm pretty sure it's that way.

Lee surprised Rosemary with a trip to Cape Fullerton to

see a performance of The Importance of Being Earnest.

And now she wants to put on her own production, which she will direct,

produce, and star in, naturally.

With Fiona's encouragement, I wrote a guide to my new curriculum.

She said she wants to send it to publishers and other educators.

I never imagined trying to create a new form of teaching, but Fiona makes

everything seem possible.

As for Nathan and me, it all feels new and exciting.

There's so much we still don't know about one another, and so much more to

discover. We're enjoying every moment together, excited for all that's to

come.

Every morning, every evening, ain't we got fun?

I'm assuming you've seen these numbers?

Yes, I know.

It's not good. No, it is not good.

Ava Riella is simply too expensive for us to support.

Ain't got money, oh, but honey, ain't we got fun?

With all that saying, where does she find the time to eat this many meals?

She is running up a tab, but she's also good for business.

Yeah, the customers do seem to like her. But still, this bill is way too high.

Oh, let me guess, Miss Riella?

Yes. Any word from her folks yet?

She told me that she just got a letter from them last week. And?

They're extending their trip.

Oh. They went to see the Northern Lights in Norway.

Oh my goodness, now it's Norway? First it was the Dolomites, then it was the

coast of Croatia.

I think the parents of an heiress would be more concerned with making sure their

daughter was sufficiently taken care of. In the meantime, in between time, ain't

we got fun?

No, Ava, we don't got fun.

Sweetheart, look on the bright side. Look what just came back from the

princess.

Audition notices?

You betcha.

The Hope Valley players present the importance of being earnest.

Who will be cast? Only time will tell.

It's very exciting. It is. I was thinking of auditioning myself.

If you think I'd be any good.

Yes, please do.

And Ava was asking about it too.

The stage is not for everyone, Hickam.

Let's distribute, Lee.

Now. Okay, I'll be right back, Mike.

Nothing else goes on that tab.

Oh, Lee!

Yes? Did you get them?

Unfortunately, they're really hard to come by.

But... My guy came through.

Thank you. You're very welcome. Have a good time.

So, I found this on my desk.

Two train tickets to Union City?

Care to explain yourself?

No, I don't think I do.

So, I'm just supposed to follow you blindly on this adventure?

You'll just have to put yourself in my hands.

Oh, what if I don't trust you? You're just gonna have to try.

What's going on? Allie, what's going on? Allie, what's going on? We are going...

to the new Buster Keaton picture at the movie palace.

Are you serious?

I was wrong to doubt you.

Forgive me. Always.

Anyway, we won't be back until late, so Allie will be at Angela's, and little

Jack will be staying with Talia, and the taxi's set to pick us up this afternoon.

Ah, well, I'll be ready.

I'm gonna... I'll be ready.

Ned? What?

Oh, listen, that holiday pageant was ten years ago.

But you only had one line.

I know.

I know.

I'll be fine. I'll be fine.

I'll be fine.

Do you think that's the best offer we're going to get?

It's a full-service salon, and it comes with all the supplies.

I see.

Well, I'll talk with my partner, Mr. Weaver, and we'll get back to you with

the decision. Thank you.

Is that what I think it is? I was up half the night finalizing. It just never

seemed finalized.

Oh.

Good. They're going to love it. These publishers are really bold.

Department of Education?

Why not?

Is that too forward?

I mean, usually you'd send a query first, but that's okay.

No, no, you're right. It's too much sending the whole thing. No, no, no, no.

You never know. Fortune favors the bold. I just have to look at the introduction

again and, um, and add some more artwork.

Leap and the net will appear.

That's what my mother used to say.

Was your mother in a circus?

The very essence of romance is uncertainty.

If ever I shall marry, I will certainly try to forget the fact. Wonderful.

Thank you, Hickam.

I did prepare a few more scenes.

No, no.

It's perfect. I have all the information I need.

Okay. Mm-hmm.

I just moved it on to the side. Thank you so much for coming.

Is that okay?

You are terrific.

Shall we?

Do you think, um...

Maybe I should ask them if I could do it again.

No, I don't think so.

Okay.

What am I going to do?

What do you mean? I thought he was very good.

He was fine, serviceable.

Algernon is supposed to be swashbuckling and rebellious, debonair and dazzling.

Hickam, Ned, Jed, they are all caution.

And stability.

Hesitation. Insecurity.

My... Oh, my goodness. Do you think I could just do it again a different way?

Every woman becomes like their mother. That is their tragedy.

No man does. That's his.

Hickam.

It was... perfect.

Thank you.

Yes.

Uh-huh.

Who in this town is smushbuckling in a bowl, pushing boundaries with a little

glint in their eye?

Oh, my goodness.

Yes!

Why didn't I think of that myself? He's perfect. He's everything. Do you think

he'll do it? There's only one way to find out.

Yes!

Thank you, everyone.

Callbacks will be posted this afternoon.

Oh, I... Well, just put them out of their misery now, Rosemary.

It's not marked on the maps, but... But I think it was more in this direction.

No, I think it was up here. No, look.

It's right there.

This could work.

We need to show Mrs. Thorne. Why don't you take it straight to the governor?

He said he wanted to help you solve your cow problem, didn't he?

You really think he'd see us?

Ask for Mr. Mitchell.

He'll love it.

Okay.

Hey, Dad.

Hi. We're going to see the governor.

Hi, sir.

Edwin? You think Edwin's gonna let them in? No.

But at least I'll have some peace and quiet while I fill you in on the

Garrison Gang case.

Oh, finally you caught a break. Maybe.

Inspector McGill sent a report.

Apparently two double-headed eagles showed up in Amsterdam at a rare coin

and stamp dealer's showroom.

The Dutch police said they couldn't get the guy to admit how they got there.

That's all well and good, but it still doesn't answer the big question.

Where the garrison gang hid the rest of the gold. Exactly.

Somewhere there is a hidden fortune.

We should get the public involved.

Sponsor a valley-wide treasure hunt.

It's too much publicity.

Is there such a thing? It might scare them off.

All right, fine.

In the meantime, Bill, I have a question for you.

You once mentioned that you worked on an espionage case with the British Colonial

Office.

What about it? You said you posed as a UK embassy official.

I assume your accent must have been pretty persuasive, hmm?

Well, persuasive, huh?

Mm-hmm.

The Undersecretary has requested an update of the situation in Devonshire.

Please gather the latest dispatches and prepare a summary for the meeting this

afternoon.

You, sir, are my Algernon.

Your what?

The importance of being earnest.

No, no, no, no. No, no, out of the question. Please.

I'm desperate.

You're the only one who can do it. The swashbuckling panache, the confident

joie de vivre, the masculine yet sensitive charmer.

Swashbuckling panache? Mm-hmm.

Well, I suppose.

Ah! Wonderful!

You won't regret it.

That was persuasive.

The Inspector General will be conducting a tour of the operation next month.

So chip chip, tally-ho!

I will pray.

Every time I feel that... Well, hello, little friend.

Heard you could use a hand.

That'd be very welcome.

I'm just nailing these together for some backdrops. How is it the Rosemary

manages to convince us to do this stuff?

Inspiration and gentle persuasion. Best way to gather a flock.

I think it's more persuasion than anything.

Thought I might be seeing you up on that stage.

No, you did not.

You did not think that.

Well, well, if not the play, we could use a hand with the church choir.

You know, Minnie and Rosemary are always looking for some new soloists.

Well, trust me, my singing is not going to bring anybody closer to God.

On the mountain, when my God spoke, out of his mouth came fire

and smoke.

I looked around me.

It looks so fine.

I asked my Lord if all this was mine.

Every time I feel the spirit moving in my heart,

I will pray.

Governor, there are two children here to see you.

Something about a pasture?

I've told them to make an appointment and go through the proper channels.

That's all right, Edwin.

I, for one, happen to like kids.

Send them in.

Thank you, Governor Bouchard.

The last time you unrolled maps at me, I ended up in a lot of hot water.

This might get you out.

What we have for you is a way for everyone to coexist.

There's a wildlife corridor the cattle can take to an even bigger summer

pasture. And they never have to cross the stream at all.

And then the fish will be able to spawn again.

It's even called the Old Meadow.

I wonder why the ranchers aren't using it.

Maybe they don't know about it.

We only found it because we were... Looking at maps.

Part of it is blocked here, apparently.

But maybe it can be cleared.

Nice work.

You two make a good team.

Can I keep this?

Edwin? Sir?

Reschedule my appointments for this afternoon.

You know, I've heard that

Buster Keaton is the funniest man in the world, and now I can see why.

The look on his face when that horse melted?

How did they do that? It was incredible.

You're incredible.

I love this song.

Danny ball!

Do me a favor, call me Danny for the next few minutes.

Danny? Danny.

Danny. Hey, hey, Toddy, you old dog.

This must be your wife.

Uh, Diane, yes.

Diane. Danny's told me so much about you. Oh.

Toddy and I, uh, we met the other night when I was out wearing my white dinner

jacket, the one you got me, darling.

Turns out we were in the same line of work.

We were talking artifacts, coins.

What a marvelous coincidence it is, running into you, of all people.

You know, I just got back from the Netherlands with quite a haul.

For a certain select clientele, of course. Oh, it sounds tempting, really.

But... You go on ahead.

It's fine. I'll see you back at home.

What a great idea.

My wife, Trudy, and I would love for you to join us. We're hosting a bit of a

bash. It's just a few close friends up the hill.

Oh. Oh, that's a fabulous idea.

Really. But we're not really dressed for a party.

We've got you covered.

And I know the perfect dress. It'll look smashing on you.

We really couldn't.

Why?

You got a better invitation?

Yeah, I thought you wanted to do business.

I guess there's nothing stopping us.

I guess not.

Come on.

Diane.

Miss...

Fairfax. Just one second. Lee, you need to stay on your mark. Yes. All right.

Let's just take it again.

Miss Fairfax.

Oh, my goodness. I love it. It's perfect. Where did you find it?

Miss Fairfax.

Yes. Yes.

Let's just hear the cue again.

Miss Fairfax.

Gwendolyn, by my word.

On second thought, I think we may also need the walking cane.

Let's look.

Yes, do we have one?

Choices.

Algy, kindly turn your back. I have something very particular to say to Mr.

Worthing. Really, Gwendolyn?

My, I don't think I can allow this at all.

Algy, you always adopt a strictly amor attitude towards life. You're not quite

old enough to do that.

Ah, thank you.

Gosh, Ava doesn't even need the script.

Oh, I...

I was in an amateur production at my boarding school in Maryland.

I would really love to help out in any way that I can, Mrs. Coulter.

Wonderful.

Why don't we take a short break, shall we?

We just took a break.

Five minutes, Bill.

I don't think I can work this way. Sweetheart, she just really wanted to

help with costumes, so I told her to come down and have a look, that's all.

Thank you. Mm-hmm.

Can I just say, you make a wonderful Gwendolyn. Not many actors have your

verve.

Well, thank you very much. I appreciate it, especially coming from clearly and

obviously an earnest expert.

Perhaps you could be in charge of props for the rehearsal only.

Really? I'd love to. Thank you.

Let's take it from the top.

From Miss Fairfax or the top top? To say something.

Miss Fairfax.

You did it again, my dear.

Those moving pictures, they don't have anything on you.

Well, if he's talking to any.

Oh, so we are married now?

Yes, we live in the city. We spend our summers by the lake. And your husband

worships the ground that you look on.

And his wife thinks he's just as handsome as the day of their wedding.

So Toddy... Yes, he's an estate dealer.

Trades in illegal coins, like the one found in the mercantile. Oh.

Turns out it was part of a notorious train robbery, and Toddy may be the key

to the case.

So, who are you to Toddy?

A shady coin dealer.

And I'm your dame?

Yeah. So we're the bad guys?

We're the bad guys.

For tonight, anyways.

Elizabeth, I'm sorry.

This is not how I pictured our evening going.

Neither did I.

But here we go!

Denny, looking sharp.

Oh, Diane!

You look stunning! I can't thank you enough. Not at all.

I said I had the perfect dress, didn't I, Todd? Always trust Rudy with fashion.

I think it's time we see that dress shimmy! Here we go!

You're a gadabout.

Let's get out there and show her stuff.

Come on.

Oh, um...

You know, I'm...

Nice moves, Danny. Let me get you a drink. Come on.

Oh, Diane.

Thank you. Oh, no, no.

Cheers.

Now, you must tell me, how did you get that dapper gentleman to call himself

yours? Oh, um, well, I, um,

I bet on him.

at a bachelor charity auction?

Oh, no.

Cost me a pretty penny, but I think it was a good long-term investment.

Oh, Diane, that is too good.

There's nothing I love more than a great love story.

Tell me more.

No, no, you, you tell me about you and Toddy.

I was a chorus girl.

He was a backstage Johnny. Oh, um, oh, um.

I want to hear all about this auction.

Evening.

Miss Martel.

Oh, what a nice surprise.

Well, I was looking for you.

Because I've come across what I think is a potential solution to our problem.

And here I was hoping you were joining me for dinner.

I can't do both.

Well, some students, an exemplary Mountie cadet and a budding naturalist,

found an old path running the perimeter of the parkland that leads directly to a

summer pasture.

It's promising.

So much for me doing my due diligence.

What do you think?

It's interesting, no doubt.

You will have to draft a proper proposal before they'll consider it an

alternative option.

Absolutely. I will get that done as soon as possible.

In fact, I could use your help with the finer points of the legalese.

Actually, I've just remembered I'm late for a meeting.

Shame.

I was looking forward to dinner.

So was I.

So, have the men been talking business?

Uh, no.

No, no.

No business. Just, uh, just lots of sports.

Did you know they were high school sweethearts?

High school sweethearts?

What about the bachelor auction?

What about the bachelor auction?

The bachelor auction where we met. Mm-hmm. Just after high school.

You two, you want to get your story straight?

No, no, it's all on the level. It's just two different parts of the same story.

You see, we met in high school. Although I'm not sure she noticed me, but I

noticed her from the audience.

She was on stage singing at the spring talent show, and it's still my favorite

song.

What was it?

Uh, You Made Me Love You.

Oh, that's a sweet one.

And then just a few years later, I was at an auction, and what did I hear but

You Made Me Love You being sung by one of the men up for bidding.

She jumped right up on stage and finished the song with me.

Ever since then, it's been our song.

And it's been the five happiest years of my life.

It's a long engagement.

You said you've been married two years?

Well, we said the I do's two years ago, but

I started counting the moment I fell in love with her.

When was that?

There's so, so many moments.

I mean, you know, the moment she said yes, that was a moment.

But there was a moment before that, actually, when she was kind to someone

that I care a great deal about.

I think that was the moment that I officially started counting.

Did you hear that, Toddy?

True love.

That's a good story.

It's not a story.

Look at them.

You should sing the song.

What song?

song you made me love you oh oh no no no one wants to hear that of course we do

go tell the band true well they might not know

well let's see this true love story

i guess we should give our hosts what they want

it's a good idea diane

You made me love you? We heard it at the movies. I thought you knew it.

Thank you.

I didn't want to do it. I didn't want to do it.

You made me want you.

And all the time you knew it. I guess you always knew it. You made me

happy sometimes.

You made me glad.

But there were times...

You made me feel so sad You made me sigh

for I didn't wanna tell you, I didn't wanna tell you I

want some love, that's true Yes I do, you know

I do Give me, give me what I cry for You know you got

the brand of kisses that I die for for you know you made me

you

I saw your light on.

Do you always work late?

Pure distractions.

Oh, like someone knocking at your door?

A welcome exception.

What are you working on?

The proposal we discussed.

The wildlife corridor.

Oh, so you're serious about that?

Aren't you?

Well, actually, at the moment, I am more interested in a game of cards.

Jacob can really do it.

And you, of course, wonderful.

Thank you.

I had a wonderful coach.

Bill, on the other hand, that was a surprise.

Brilliant, isn't he? He was.

Everyone is just... They're just... We are still short a few

parts. Too bad you can't play them all, right? I wish I could play a few less

parts.

Well... If you're serious about passing the baton, Ava seems to know the play

pretty well.

Please. That over-the-top show-off is not coming anywhere near my play.

All right.

Um, well, maybe you could get some help with the direction, then.

Lee, this is my baby.

Not my real baby, but I care about this far too much to just hand it over to

some amateur in a tiara.

Let me ask you, what is it about Ava that bothers you so much?

She is just so dramatic.

She just takes up all the oxygen.

No, don't say it. I know. Of course, there is a

shadow of a resemblance, but we are not the same.

For starters...

I am not some poor little unlucky heiress who's lost my money and my

clothes and my parents in the Alps. And secondly, I... No

one is my Rosie.

Sweetheart, you were brilliant.

Acting, directing, and producing.

This play is gonna be a smash.

I just know it.

Thank you for always standing by me.

I love you so much. I love you.

An interesting choice.

Jen.

Okay, well, that's what I get for playing a known card sharp.

Mm-mm.

Don't believe everything you read in the press.

I am no sharp.

Then I guess I'm just a poor player.

Hardly. But you do have a tell. A tell? A little gesture.

Tells you when a player's hiding something.

A good card.

A bad card.

Something they don't want their opponent to know.

I see.

And what's my tell?

You fiddle with your ring finger.

You did it today, at the cafe, when I asked you if you thought it was a good

plan.

I know that you did not come to my office in the dead of night only to play

cards, so... is there anything you want to share?

I do.

I have, um... a thought.

Drop the proposal.

Pretend like you never heard about this other pastor.

He's saving a lot of people from a lot of trouble, including yourself.

Where's this coming from?

I'm afraid that's a matter of attorney-client privilege.

I see.

So, once again, we find ourselves on opposite sides.

Well, wasn't the only reason I came here tonight?

We can still be friends playing cards, can't we?

I believe it's your deal.

You know, I watched you play poker in Union City.

Know what I noticed?

That the cards weren't in my favor?

But you always bet big, even when you had none.

Not sure that's a virtue.

Maybe not in poker, but it tells me you have confidence.

Guts.

I do like to take risks, but I always protect my clients.

I know I liked you, DeMarco.

You know, I've got this one guy.

The hotter the merchandise, the better.

He likes it when there's a story.

Swords, medallions, stamps.

If he takes a shining tooth, he'll pay top dollar.

I think I may have something for him.

What do you got?

Not here.

Isn't this your house?

24 carats.

Some two-bit rancher got his hands on a crate of these.

What's a rancher doing with a crate of gold?

Is he still there?

No. No, he died last year.

The place was a real dump, too.

You get all kinds of eccentrics.

How many of those you got?

I could sell a few to you.

I don't know if the story's gonna be enough for your guy.

Dead rancher sitting on a pot of gold? I could spend that.

Where'd you say this guy was again?

One of the valleys past Benson Hills.

Around there.

Talk to my guy?

Have you ever been bored at your own party?

More drinks, more dancing.

Actually, it's, um, it's getting late.

We should go. Well, if you want to be party poopers.

I can call you a cab.

Rosie? Coming.

Any news?

Not yet. I'm waiting for a call from Mr. Weaver. See if he wants to accept the

offer.

You ready to let go of this place?

No?

I suppose there's something better waiting for you.

I suppose.

I still haven't decided.

It's a big one.

Yeah.

I'm not one of those girls who dreamed of their wedding day, the white dress,

the happily ever after.

I wasn't either.

When I studied in Chicago, the closest I ever thought I would get to a husband

was a forged marriage certificate.

And then you met Mike?

Yeah.

And I realized that's what I wanted.

Well, you do seem happy.

But you... You have a spark.

And I think you should follow it.

Hello.

Hi, Mr. Weaver.

Yes, I know. I was hoping for better, too.

As they say, bird in the hand.

Okay.

I'll see to it.

Thank you, Mr. Weaver.

It's done.

It's done?

One adventure ends and another begins.

Yeah.

They never suspected anything?

They did at first. We couldn't get our story straight.

But you pulled it off. I guess your acting skills have improved.

Nathan had a whole character for me.

I was Diane DeMarco, wife of a shady antiques dealer.

Wait. Was Nathan Danny DeMarco? How did you know?

Well, I was the one who invented him.

You know what? It's a long story. But clearly, you both should have auditioned

for the play.

Oh, how did the rest of your auditions go?

Did you find what you needed?

Well, almost.

Seems this Eva Riella is quite the performer.

She memorized the entire play. It was a bit excessive.

Quick study.

Well...

Don't you think it's odd that this sheltered heiress from Baltimore is

suddenly parading around town like a one-woman vaudeville act?

I seem to recall someone else arriving in Hope Valley with a bit of a dramatic

flair. She's supposed to be your doppelganger though, not mine.

Well, maybe she's a bit like both of us.

Were we ever that wide-eyed and lost?

I know I was.

Sometimes I miss that feeling that life could just take you anywhere.

Well, our adventures are far from over. Clearly.

You spent the night hobnobbing with gamblers and doing the Charleston.

I just wish I could have joined you.

No, I was referring to what I mailed in the post this morning.

No. You didn't. You sent the curriculum. So what changed your mind?

Leap and the net will appear.

I hope.

All right, I'll do it.

I will offer the careless heiress a role in my play. If anyone can

wrestle a serviceable performance out of her, it's me.

To more adventure.

To more adventure.
