What we got?
Three rifles.
We should go take cover with Sammy.
Copy.
You got eyes on?
No, I can't see anything.
They're just beyond that tree line.
They're waiting for us to come in.
Well, we can't shoot what we can't see.
You gotta scout it.
I'm always scout.
You're the smallest target.
I don't want to be the target at all.
We'll cover you.
Keep going.
Shit.
Contact!
I'm hit, I'm hit, I'm hit!
Where you hit?
Left arm, but I can still use my pistol.
Did you get any of them?
We were getting you.
Thought you had me covered.
What's the sitrep? We heard gunfire.
Sammy got tagged.
There's a group of them on the tree line.
Hey, what about our six?
The rest already took care of them.
Headshots, too.
Look painful.
Good.
Then they're all that's left.
Let's flank these guys.
John, you go left. Lay down suppressing fire.
Daniel, Russ, you're with me.
We'll hard push from the right.
I got point.
Russ, you follow.
Got it.
I'll cover you.
Yeah, you better.
Let's go.
Reloading!
Game over!
Tully, you good?
I'm good.
Hell yeah.
Hey, good game. Good game.
Good game. Good game.
Game over!
All right, first thing's first. We're gonna work on our stance.
We're on what? Railroad tracks, right?
Feet forward, shoulder width apart.
Let's pretend we got our rig up. We're bending at the knees. We want to square
our plates.
This is what protects us. We're wearing that armor. So you don't want to blade
and present that smaller target. You want to square it right up. So if they
shoot you, center mass, it's going to hit your plate.
You don't want to slip in on the side.
What you don't want is your sight picture to do this, right?
It's heel-toe, heel-toe, heel-toe. Target left, target right, right.
Just like that. Show me.
Let's get down that nice crouch, aggressive stance.
Walk it forward. Heel-toe, heel-toe, heel-toe. Good, good, good. Left, target
left. Good. To the right, 45.
Back on center.
We're going to throw that rifle behind us. We're going to switch to our
secondary. We're pulling up. We're compressing here at the chest.
Okay? We're pushing out to target.
Bang, bang, bang.
Target's down.
We compress.
We scan for other targets. Everything's clear. We're going to watch that all the
way back into the holster.
Threat's gone.
There's no need to not look at it. Go safely back into your holster.
So you take out that tango, you save your buddy, and then you pop that corner
to get that, right? Right foot out. Bam. Good. We've got to imagine that's a wall
we can't see behind, all right? It's like little pieces of pie, right? So
we're up here slicing a pie, right?
So when you switch, you get that whole room. Tuck yourself away, and then
you're going to take that.
Very good.
Good. Nice.
Let's get these boys some weapons.
Get that weapon up. Keep it up. Keep it up. Keep coming. Watch your corner. Keep
coming. Bang, bang. Bang, bang.
Good.
Bang. Save your buddy.
A little higher. You want to see down that sight. Beautiful.
Float through.
Good. Drop that elbow. Watch that chicken wing.
Slow.
Good, good with that elbow.
We're going to engage in one, two, three, four.
I'm going to pop this corner. Bing, bing.
Bang, bang. We flow through.
Bang, bang.
Right side.
Good. Straight ahead. Bang, bang.
Pop that corner.
Bang. Nice work.
Hey, Dad.
How'd the ab go?
Doing great.
Tyler and I executed a textbook pincer move for the win. Ah.
Double envelopment, huh?
I approve.
Yes, sir.
Any casualties?
Well, Sammy got shot in the arm, but he was scout.
Not a flawless victory, then.
Yeah, but Sammy sucks.
Well, a good commander should always strive to minimize loss, yeah?
General Patton said you don't win wars by dying for your country.
You win wars by making the other guy die for his.
All right, so you do listen sometimes.
I always listen to you.
You weren't listening this morning when I asked you to take care of your chores
before you left.
I did my chores.
No, no, you didn't clear the brush from the north pasture.
You didn't ask me to do that. Yeah, I did.
No, you didn't. You asked me to... Don't talk back.
Yes, sir.
Look, your ma's inside making dinner.
I want you to clear that brush before we eat.
Yes, sir.
All right.
Some cookies for dessert?
You can't take all of them, kiddo.
Where are these from?
The Scout girls were selling them.
Are you telling me I don't want people soliciting here?
Even if it's cookies?
Even if it's cookies.
I got them in town, Lee.
The girls were out in front of the grocery store.
You shouldn't let them do that.
That's how you get panhandlers.
Isn't that shit illegal?
Language.
It's begging to my opinion.
Don't look at me like that.
I just like cookies.
I can throw them out if you like.
Cookies and steak.
Can we go shooting tomorrow for my birthday? Good lord, shoo, boy.
Sorry.
Can we go shooting tomorrow for my birthday?
Don't you have school tomorrow?
Come on, let me skip tomorrow.
It's my birthday.
Sorry, bub.
Can we go shooting this weekend, then?
Well, Melissa drills this weekend.
I got to meet with Nathan.
I got a bunch of rifles that need repairing and sighting them before then,
so... So you get to go shooting.
Not for fun.
Well, then just take me with you to Melissa.
I can shoot better than half those guys.
That's probably true.
Look, I love the fact that you want to join and...
If it were up to me, I'd let you, but it's not up to me.
And, alas, I check you're turning 17, not 18, so... can't come.
Meantime... be a good boy. Clean up for your mom before bed, all right?
Yes, sir.
Hey, going to bed.
Good night.
Good night, kid.
Night.
Love you.
Love you, too.
Time's up.
What is this?
What? Number 12 is a stick figure shrugging.
He didn't know the answer.
Clearly. Okay.
I will finish grading this later.
Let's move on to history. Grab your notes I hope you took.
And tell me about the Battle of Shiloh.
The Battle of Shiloh was fought April 6th and 7th in 1862, Pittsburgh Landing,
Tennessee. The Confederate forces attacked the Union forces to stop their
approach into Mississippi, but failed.
Who were the commanding officers?
Albert Sidney Johnston and P.T. Beauregard for the Confederacy and
Ulysses S. Grant and Buell for the Union.
What armies were involved?
The Army of Mississippi's 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Corps and Reserve, the Army of
Tennessee's 1st through 6 Divisions, and 4 Divisions of the Army of Ohio.
That's 63,000 troops for the Union and 40,000 for the Confederates. And the
Confederates still almost won.
Why didn't the Confederates win?
Because they didn't push the attack when they had the Union forces in retreat.
They waited till morning to do so, but by then Buell had already called for
reinforcements.
So what's the lesson here?
Finish off your enemy when you get the chance.
Very good.
If you paid attention to your agriculture as well as your history, you
wouldn't be drawing stickmen.
Yeah, but agriculture is boring.
Agriculture is what feeds your little body, and you are eventually going to be
taking over the family farm.
Hey there.
Did you forget something?
Nope.
So what am I interrupting?
The Battle of Shiloh.
General Johnston's on the retreat.
Oh, exciting.
But, uh, you're gonna have to put a cork in it if we're going shooting.
Really?
It's your birthday.
Oh, hell yeah.
Okay, back in time for dinner, okay? I'm making that chicken you like.
Yes, ma'am.
So what do you want to shoot today?
Well, I was thinking about what you said about wanting to join a militia. I can
join early.
No. But if you're going to be joining next year, seems like it might be a good
time for you to own your own gun.
Maybe get in some practice, some responsibility beforehand.
I can get anything I want. Well, any pistol you like. Yeah, it's yours.
1911.
That was fast.
You sure?
Positive. I approve.
Tell the man.
What, this one?
You sure you know how to handle that thing?
Yeah.
Reload. Send it.
Nice.
Mozambique.
Finish it.
It's good.
It's good.
Well done.
Good shooting.
Come on, wrap it up.
All right, there you go. Hey, thanks.
It's a good day, man.
I appreciate you. Thanks for everything.
Yeah. See you Saturday?
Yeah, see you, Drew. All right.
You know you're gonna have to clean this thing when you get home, right?
I know.
It doesn't go anywhere except to the range or somewhere with me.
I know.
If your friends want to play with it, you tell them it's not a toy.
Dad, I know.
Yeah, you've been telling me this stuff since I could walk. I promise I'll be
responsible. Or?
Or there'll be hell to pay.
See, I listen.
Pull over.
There you go. Turn on two.
Lessons in registration, please.
Stopping you because your plates are out of date.
You want to tell me where you're coming from today?
No, we do not.
What's your name, sir?
I don't have to divulge that information.
Then I'm going to need to see your license as well in that case.
State law mandates that only the driver of the vehicle is required to surrender
the documented information.
You know this man?
He's not forcing you to go somewhere is he look you need to talk to someone you
talk to me It was my understanding that Stanley Dietrich was in charge in this
county Why don't you get out of the truck come talk to me at the rear
No, thank you Well, I'm sure
you'll know that state law mandates
That when I see firearms in the rear of a vehicle, I have probable cause to
perform a vehicle search for contraband.
Stay here.
You can hold on to this.
Now put your hands up where I can see them.
You want to show me what's under this tarp besides these rifles?
Look for yourself.
It's gonna be like that, huh?
Whoa You got paperwork for all these
You're not gonna talk to me
Listen you can speak up
or I'll take you and the boy put you in holding while I check these guns for
registration Son step out of the truck
Stay right there.
If that boy ends up in cuffs, we're gonna have a real problem.
Fine. Run him off.
The boy stays here.
Fine.
Step over this way. Show me your hands.
You coming with me?
Dad! Come, Daniel.
We need to have a talk.
Half those rifles are automatic.
I guess you knew that.
Thing is, you don't have a class three license for them.
But seeing as how we live where we live, you aren't the only person to be
breaking that specific law.
Besides, you're a prominent member of the local militia.
Isn't that right?
Maybe half of those guns aren't yours. Maybe they are.
The real problem I have... is with
this.
What are you doing with this, Mr. Pierce?
This does not look good.
You got a bunch of unregistered weapons and a book with detailed notes about the
sheriff's department.
Radio frequencies.
Code index.
Frequent routes down in a minute sometimes.
You know, I'd be impressed if it weren't a little unsettling.
Is it illegal to write down where a particular vehicle goes?
I don't think you're taking notes for the neighborhood watch.
You're tracking us.
And in my experience, tracking's just a nice word for hunting.
Now you better give me a good reason.
For what you're doing because let me tell you this is gonna cause you a world
of trouble You
know the militia and
the police We're on the same team
Are we?
You care to explain?
No
Okay, then
Wait
here, please
You
do
to appear County courtroom two weeks from today for your arraignment and
subsequent court dates.
It gives you time to sit down and talk to me about what happened today.
All right, you're free to go.
Mr. Pierce.
You're looking at 10 grand in fines and possibly some real jail time.
I'm talking two years alone just for the firearms.
Please, reconsider your stance on whether or not we're on the same side.
What are we gonna do, Lee? I'm thinking.
Expired plates.
God damn it!
It's all law enforcement's good for.
You know, these sons of bitches take an oath to the Constitution.
Defend and uphold it. They don't give a shit about folks' God-given rights.
Same team my ass.
Will they actually give you jail time?
You can't go to jail.
How can I help?
I gotta talk to Nathan.
Right now?
I don't trust saying it over the phone.
Sorry, no ice.
Hey, be a darling and wait with Kathleen, will you?
Okay.
You picture about the worst possible time never running with the law?
Look, I knew I had all those guns in the bed, but I figured it was one trip.
And when it's Daniel's birthday, it'll be fine.
That's the kind of thinking that'll get you gored by the bull.
Boy, you got got.
When did the Carson County Sheriff start stopping people for expired plates?
Huh? And who's this shithead Webb?
Stanley retired, and this Webb just got elected.
These new law busting asses and being real goody-two-shoes about it Afraid
the days of old Dietrich looking the other way are over I
Don't know where to start I mean you could start with getting my guns back
Lee I'll be damned or the government's gonna steal my property from you over
some registration bullshit. Well, then lock up now We'll see about that
I'm more worried about the court.
He threatened me with jail time.
Bullshit, you ain't doing jail time.
The web might be hot and bothered, but the judge ain't new.
I'll slap you with a fine, you'll be on your merry way.
And if I'm not?
He found my black book.
No, he didn't. Yeah, he did. What the hell, Lee? Hey, look, I wasn't planning
on getting my truck searched. You sure did a fine job of getting tagged. Over
expired plates.
It's not like I was out there robbing the general store.
It could have just as easily been you, man.
No, it couldn't, because it wasn't, was it?
All right.
You're right.
I'll own it fine.
Either way, it's not just me who's got a problem now.
They put that book on show, I go to trial, then what?
Nathan, they swear me in on that Bible, I'm beholden to God at that point.
And they ask me who those guns belong to, I'm gonna have to tell them your
name.
Forrest's name, Jackson's name.
Then old Sheriff Webb will have everything he needs to come down here,
bother you again, take everything else you got.
And our lives will be shit sideways, and I can't have that, much less go to jail.
We'll talk to the boys.
Your Honor, defendant's here, and I'm ready to proceed.
Proceed, then.
By way of the Constitution of the United States of America, we come before you
today well within our rights.
Please remain seated. We mean you no harm.
What the hell is going on here?
Lee Pierce stands falsely accused of crime by the government that sits before
you.
I mean to make an example out of him in order to scare us into submission.
We stand here today to say that we will not be scared, bullied, or forced into
giving up our rights.
So, Judge, you will not be sentencing Lee Pierce today or any other day.
If you're so sure of Mr. Pierce's innocence, let him stand before the
state in a fair trial.
Your system is not a fair one.
And until it is, you will not see the likes of any of us within it.
You don't get to decide which law suits you.
That which you cannot enforce is not law.
Try to take our weapons, see if you live to tell the tale.
Hell yeah.
Any law officer who incites trouble for the sake of trouble against these good
people that I protect will be shot.
God is my witness.
May that statement stand as my law.
Company, fall out.
You have a nice day now.
And you folks as well.
Watch your step.
All right, stand by.
All right, come on.
Got it.
Do you think the sheriff is going to do anything?
Not if he has to lick his sense, he won't.
Aren't you breaking the law?
The laws are complicated.
Some laws make sense in some places, don't make sense in other places.
Some laws just aren't good laws.
Just.
That make sense?
I guess.
I know there are good people and bad people.
Sure. Well, sometimes bad people become
judges, politicians.
Sometimes even cops.
You think the sheriff is a bad person?
Well, I think he's doing the wrong thing because some other corrupt person told
him that what he was doing was right.
What if the sheriff does come after you?
Do you remember when you were being bullied at church?
What did I tell you to do?
Stand up to them.
And you did.
How you pushed Russ down the stairs when he made funny.
Are you in trouble?
Yeah, you got in a little trouble, but the boys stopped bullying you, didn't
they?
Yeah.
That's right.
Would you take back what you did now?
That's right.
Because it was worth fighting for.
Some things in this life are...
worth getting in a little trouble for in order to stand up for what you believe
in.
And believe me, there are more bad people than good in this world.
When they get the chance, they'll take everything from you.
What's the golden rule of survival?
Hunter be hunted.
Damn straight.
You'll learn soon enough that you gotta think that way about people,
press, and government.
Don't ever forget that.
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will
be done, on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive
those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen.
Thanks to everyone for being here today and have a blessed Sunday.
Good to see you. How are you?
It's a nice sermon today.
I'm hanging with the boys for a little bit, if that's okay.
Yeah, that's fine. Just be home for supper, yeah?
Yes, sir.
All right.
Sorry about that.
Kids are good?
Holy shit, man!
Your dad's going to war with the sheriff's department.
He's just standing up for what he believes in.
That's what war is.
Hey, cool it, guys.
Wait till we're in session.
Just call us in session, then.
All right.
I now call to order the 43rd meeting of the Wild Bunch. Hear, hear, hear.
Man, I wish I'd been at the courthouse when the militia stormed in.
Man, I wish I'd been in the militia.
That's the real shit.
Man, it was crazy.
They all busted in, armed to the teeth, and then surrounded the whole place.
Nathan gave some big speech about justice and my dad being falsely
accused, but then he said that that which you cannot enforce isn't law.
Like cops can't enforce laws?
No, I think that what it means is that the cops are overreaching.
That what they're doing to us is beyond their power. Like, they shouldn't be
messing with the militia.
Just wait till they have to mess with us.
Right? I mean, we're faster than half of those guys.
Yeah, because we're half the fucking size of those guys, man. My dad's so
fat, he has to be a sniper because he can barely move.
Man, if we all keep training together, just imagine the difference we can make
when it's our turn.
Live free or die.
Yeah.
Good.
Let's go play some airsoft.
Sorry, man.
Can't make it.
Gotta go do some field work.
Yeah, actually, I can't either.
My truck shit the bed this morning, so I'm just gonna go work on it with John.
You wanna come, Dan?
Nah.
I think I might go home.
Clean my new .45 instead.
Bullshit. Bullshit.
Not bullshit.
I got it for my birthday.
Prove it.
You'll see it next weekend.
Next weekend's militia shoot day.
Yeah.
I'm gonna use it for the comp.
Oh, shit.
Hold up.
You really got your own .45?
Yep.
Damn.
Wish my dad loved me that much.
Maybe he'll love you if you win the shooting contest.
We all know that's not going to happen. Yeah, well, it's definitely not going to
be your dumb ass.
Don't be so sure.
Hey, keep dreaming, pal.
But we are going to take a group photo, so everybody wear your fatigues and all
your tack gear.
Yes, sir.
All right, I'm out.
I'm going to see if I can get John's sister to polish my rifle.
Oh, Russ.
Russie.
I'm actually going to fucking kill you.
Dad. Dad.
Hey, you got a second to help me out with something?
That depends what it is.
I need to wear fatigues to shoot day. I was wondering if we could go to army
surplus tonight.
What are the fatigues for?
The boys.
We just thought it'd be cool to, you know, all be in one uniform.
Look like a squad, you know?
Follow me.
hopefully the mice ain't got to it
oh
my old scooter remember that
How about these?
My old ACUs work for you?
Actually, I need OCPs, but no, this is still great. All right.
Is this all your stuff from the Army?
Yeah.
How come you never talk about any of that?
Well, not much to talk about.
Needed money, did four years, decided to move on.
I thought these were in here.
Not cool.
Can I wear these?
You want to wear my dog tags? Yeah.
Kind of defeats the point, but I'll do what you like.
I just think it's cool that they're yours.
All this stuff, Dad, this is great.
Well, put it to good use.
Yes, sir.
All right.
Oh, boy.
Can I show the field manuals to the guys?
Yeah, do what you like, but just don't kill each other putting each other in a
chokehold or something, all right?
No, sir.
You ready for tomorrow's competition?
Yes, sir.
Gonna make Tyler look like a fool.
That's my boy.
All right, look, I gotta get back to it. Just, uh... Put all this stuff away,
lock it up when you're done.
Yes, sir.
All right, attaboy.
All right, all right. Now we're gonna move on to the under-18 junior
competition. So all you aspiring young militia members, go line up over at
range two.
Hey, good luck, boys.
We're gonna need it. Yeah, yeah.
Good luck. You going down, Ty?
Actually, I will be taking that trophy, but thank you, Russ.
Fuck off, Daniel.
What if I win?
Sammy, if you win, I'll shoot myself.
Maybe I'll just have to shoot you first.
I don't know. How about I just shoot all of you, so I win? Yeah, you'll run out
of ammo before you hit any of us.
You die first.
Five bullets down.
Okay, Russ, you die first. All right, guys, save it for the range.
Jesus Christ.
Hey, it's you or me?
All right, listen up.
You will each have 10 shots on the 10-yard target, 10 shots on the 25-yard
target, 4 shots on the target tree, and 1 shot on the 50-yard ace of diamonds.
Most points in the least amount of time wins.
Load and make ready, gentlemen.
Shooters ready?
Shooters stand by.
All right.
Totals are in.
And the winner is... Daniel Pierce.
Hey, nice shot.
Thanks, Dad. Good job. Nice shooting, Dad. Thanks.
Oh, my God.
Sammy beat John.
Fucking way dude, this is fucking bullshit. Hey, there's always next year
man. God damn it Somebody take John's
gun before you know somebody I guess this makes Daniel commander.
Yeah, but we all know who's really in charge though
Yeah. Me.
Hey, Mom. Hey, just in time.
How'd the shoot go?
It was good.
Dad got second.
That's great.
Was he pissed he didn't win?
Yeah, a little bit.
How'd you do?
Did all right.
Just all right?
Yeah, first place is all right with me. I knew it. I knew it.
Let's see.
Hey, go put this on the mantel, and then can you set the table?
Yeah, sure.
I'm proud of you.
Thanks.
Hey, what's for dinner?
Lasagna. Oh, yes.
Hey, Dad's coming home for dinner, right?
Uh, yeah.
He stayed after to help Nathan clean up a little bit, but I'll be back.
I was with Tyler after the... Don't move! Hands up!
Where's Lee Pearce?
I don't know. What's going on in there?
Caprice. Back up.
Back. Back.
Where is he?
He's not here.
Bullshit!
Where is he?
Where is he? We got a warrant for his arrest. Where is he? You have no right
to break into our home like this.
Where's Lee?
Alright, put your hands on the fridge.
Don't move.
Where is he?
Jesus Christ.
Hey! Cut that shit out. Back off. Now.
You alright?
Fuck off.
Where's your father?
Get the fuck out of my house. Hey!
You okay?
Yeah. Get the hell out.
Go.
Your husband's a wanted man.
I'm calling Nathan.
Stand here and let me know if they come back.
Hi, Kat, it's Ellie. Is Lee there by chance?
Yes, please.
He's still with Nathan. Thank God. See anything?
No, not yet.
Hey, Ann. What you need? Lee, the sheriff just busted into the house with
guns and everything with a warrant for your arrest.
Whoa, whoa, whoa. The sheriff was inside the house?
Yes. They kicked in the front and back door.
It was awful. Are you okay?
Is Daniel there?
Yeah, we're both okay.
Are they taking anything? Leaving anything?
I don't think so.
I'm not sure. I had my... hands on the fridge when they were in the bedroom.
Daniel, did you see them take anything?
No. I don't think they took anything.
All right, make sure they didn't place a bug or something in the bedroom.
They aren't still there, are they?
No, they left.
Did you say anything to them?
No, but Lee, I don't know where they're headed next. I think you need to be
careful coming home.
Code black.
I'll be ready in 20.
Make it 10.
Darling, I'm not coming home. You understand?
Nathan's going to take me where I can stay out of trouble.
Lee, you need to come home.
Who's to say they aren't waiting for me at the end of the drive or anywhere in
between?
I can't risk it.
So, you just go wherever and then...
We just wait for you to come back.
Look, we've talked about this before. Just because we've talked about it
doesn't mean I like it.
Well, I don't like it either. It's better than jail.
What do you want me to do?
Attagirl.
Keep the farm running while I'm gone. Make sure the South Pastor gets seated.
Any info on the sheriff, you pass that to Nathan.
And help Daniel protect the place.
I'll put Daniel on the phone.
Be careful, Lee.
Yes, ma'am.
I love you.
I love you, too.
Daniel, come talk to your father.
Dad, what's going on?
You okay?
No, this piece of shit put a gun to my chest.
Webb did that?
No, the deputy.
Yes, sir.
Yes,
sir.
Yes,
sir.
If you need to get in touch, you leave me a note at the hunting tree.
That's between you and me.
No need to worry your mom.
Take care now.
You too.
Mom.
Hey. Hey.
Has anything like this ever happened before?
Yeah.
About ten years ago, something kind of like this happened.
How'd it turn out?
There was a big standoff between the cops and a group of guys, and in the
end, the guys skedaddled in the middle of the night and left the state.
So the cops won.
Yes and no.
But the guys, they had to leave town.
But they didn't give the cops what they wanted either.
Sounds like a defeat to me.
Come here.
I just wish... There was a way I could cut a deal with the sheriff.
I think it's gonna take more than that.
Yeah.
I think that Nathan and the guys are working on figuring something out.
Yeah, but they won't tell me anything.
I mean, their stupid age rule keeps me in the dark and I can't do anything.
I know you don't like it, but you're a kid.
You're supposed to be doing kid stuff.
They don't want you getting mixed up in trouble.
Yeah, but I want to be mixed up in the trouble.
I mean, fuck, we are mixed up in the trouble.
I know, but it's gonna be okay.
And what if it isn't?
Even if it isn't, it'll be okay.
That doesn't make any sense.
It does. Just take a deep breath. We're gonna keep fighting.
If I did something with the militia, would you be upset?
Not if they allowed it.
Did you have something in mind?
No. Just anything to help Dad out.
You keeping things safe around here is helping Dad out.
But it's not enough.
Yes, it is.
We just gotta hang tight, okay?
I'll try.
I love you.
I love you too.
Then the Lord said to Cain, why are you angry?
Why is your face downcast?
If you do what is right, you will not be accepted.
But if you do not do what is right, sin is crouching at your door.
It desires to have you, but you must rule over it.
Now Cain said to his brother Abel, let's go out to the field.
While they were in the field, Cain attacked his brother Abel and killed
him.
Then the Lord said to Cain, All right, guys, we lost.
Dan won.
Dan's in charge for the next year, which is all yours.
For now.
Woo-hoo!
Next time.
All right, and I'll call the order of the 44th session of the Wild Bunch.
Hear, hear!
Look, I know I kind of mess around a lot, but I need to talk to you about
something serious.
Sheriff broke into my house the other day looking for my dad, and now he's
gone.
Were you there when they broke in?
Me and my mom were, yeah.
Pinned me against the table and put a gun to my chest.
No fucking way.
The sheriff did that?
One of his goons did, yeah.
Did they touch your mom?
Couldn't see.
There's no way that shit's legal.
Yeah, did they have a warrant or anything?
He said he had a warrant.
They have to show you that shit.
Well, he didn't.
I bet he didn't have one.
Cops do illegal shit all the time.
Yeah.
My grandpa used to be a cop, and he said they planted evidence a ton.
Well, it's kind of hard to say anything like that with a gun in my chest.
What's your dad gonna do?
He's hiding somewhere.
He told me to protect my mom no matter what and, you know, that got me thinking
that we gotta change how we do things around here.
How?
I think we should be doing exactly the same stuff the militia's doing.
I mean, you're all gonna join, right?
Hell yeah.
We all know how to shoot.
Yeah, I mean some of us better than others. Shut up, Sammy.
Look, if they won't let us join the militia now, we just form one of our
own. I mean, we're basically a militia anyway. We're a group of guys that come
together to protect people.
I'm in.
Yeah, I'll do it.
Yeah, me too.
Well, and then what?
We just keep airsofting?
You know, saying we're a militia doesn't make us a militia.
That's why we train like one.
Look, my dad gave me his field manuals, and there's all sorts of info for close
quarters combat, squad tactics.
Everything that we need to practice.
This shit's legit.
Yeah. It's nothing compared to this one.
This one teaches you how to make improvised explosives.
Like IEDs?
That's what IED stands for, dumbass.
Improvised Explosive Device.
You wanna make a bomb.
I want to teach this shithead a lesson.
Let's vote on it then.
Alright.
All in favor of forming our own militia?
Hands up.
Now what?
Let's make a trip to the hardware store.
You mean the bomb store?
Exactly.
Okay, so it's one inch steel piping, one inch washers, and then a pipe cap.
What about nails?
I think I saw some in the other aisle.
Make sure they're half inch. Got it.
All right, what else?
Gunpowder or some other proponent.
I got plenty of that at home.
Yeah? All right.
Then it's just fuse, blasting cap, or igniter.
Here's a couple different options.
Firearm section?
Yeah.
To the guns!
Let's go.
Find everything all right? Yeah.
Thanks.
What you boys building?
What?
What you making with these supplies here?
What are we building?
It's a spud gun.
I see.
129 even.
Be careful.
Yes, sir.
Thanks.
Yeah, okay.
Shut the hell up.
Don, what's your...
Hey, whatever that's bullshit good wheels and you still lost John
you put more can in here. Yeah
Shit.
Forgot a welding torch.
Fuck. Yeah, I don't want to talk to that guy again.
I think Sammy's got one at home.
So you know how to use it?
Yeah, probably.
I mean, his dad's a welder, so... All right.
Tell Sammy to bring that, okay?
And then everyone else, meet at my house Wednesday, and we'll put it together,
yeah? Yep. Sounds good.
Okay.
Hey, Daniel.
Just got a call from the hardware store about some kids making some fishy
purchases.
Anything you want to tell me?
No.
You know I'm going to go in there.
He's going to tell me what happened.
I don't have anything.
So whatever he tells you, it wasn't me.
All right, listen.
I know you weren't happy with me about the situation with your father.
I get it. I'd be pissed, too.
And I want to apologize for the actions my deputy took towards you the other
day.
That wasn't right.
But your dad broke the law.
He has to face the consequences.
And that stunt, him and his buddies pulled the courtroom the other day,
could have gotten somebody killed.
Look at me.
If you know where he is, or you hear anything, please
come to me before people get hurt.
I'm not the bad guy here.
I'm here to protect and to serve.
That includes you.
No matter how much you might hate me right now.
Is that all?
What you reading?
A book.
Can I go?
Yeah.
You can go.
Hey there.
Wanted to let you know that we're safe and we haven't been bothered in a while.
I hope you're doing alright.
Me and the boys are putting something together to try to help you out.
Get things back to normal.
Mom doesn't like being out of the loop, but I think she understands.
Let me know if you have any advice.
I hope to see you soon.
I got some boot prints over here.
I have footprints here.
That's some headed east, some headed south.
Got a deer trail.
Someone's been following it.
See anything nah nothing but a lot of hiding places I
Bet if we follow that deer trail we catch up to whoever else is following it
Let's get to it Okay
So basically, you just mount the caps in like this, drill a hole for the fuse,
and once you do, the explosion's got nowhere to go but out.
That's it?
That's it.
Just gotta put these caps on, and got ourselves an arsenal.
Fucking bomb-smooth Sammy, man.
Hey, you think you could finish one up by tonight when the gang shows up?
Yeah, sounds good to me.
That's Tyler.
We're back.
Yeah, okay. Let me hold it. Yeah.
Hey, got the goods?
Yep, four extra large pepperonis and four green machines, one for each.
Oh, there is God.
Is everyone here?
Yeah, everybody but John. Sam is finishing up the last bomb, so when John
gets here, we can test it. Oh, man.
Sammy Sammy
Sammy
Sammy
Okay. Okay, stay still.
Stay still.
Tyler!
Shit.
We gotta get him to the house.
Yeah, yeah, okay.
Okay, combat dragon.
Yeah, come on.
Stop!
Okay, okay.
Do we just leave him here?
I don't know. I don't know, I don't know, I don't know.
Sammy, buddy, what do you want us to do?
I want to go home. No.
Buddy, we got to move you, okay? It's going to hurt, but we got to get you out
of here.
Okay.
We're taking him to the house.
Okay. Three, two, one.
Holy shit.
Sammy, buddy.
Sammy, you okay?
Buddy, Sammy.
Fuck!
He's bleeding. He's bleeding.
Mom!
Mom! Help!
What's going on?
It's okay. We need help.
Sammy's hurt bad.
Call 911.
Tyler, call 911.
Stop. Don't do that.
We need to get him to the hospital. No.
No, that'll make things worse for all of us. If he goes to the hospital, people
will really start asking questions.
Then what do we do?
He's still breathing.
We need to slow the bleeding.
Daniel, go start the truck.
You need to take him to Forrest Baker's house. His wife was a nurse.
Do not go to the hospital.
Daniel, go!
Get his feet.
I'll call Forrest and tell him you're coming.
Okay, that's good.
Okay, what exploded?
I don't know.
We weren't in the garage when it blew up.
Now is not the time for secrets, boys.
It was a pipe bomb.
What was it made of?
Steel pipe.
Mostly.
Was it filled with anything?
I'm not sure.
You sure you're not sure?
I promise we don't know.
What can we do to help?
Leave.
I'll do everything I can and I'll let you know.
Are you hurt at all?
No.
Did everyone get home okay?
Is Russ okay?
I'm scared.
I know.
Sammy was so fucked up.
I didn't know what to do.
I know. You got him help.
That's all that you can do.
It's okay.
I'm scared.
I know. You're okay.
Everyone's gonna be okay.
I wish Dad was here.
Hey, partner.
Glad to hear y'all are doing well.
Sorry to say things aren't going as well for me.
Cops are out searching and my spot isn't gonna hold up. I gotta leave the area.
Put some distance between me and them.
Not sure when I'll see you next, so be strong for your mother.
Tell her I love her and I'm not giving up.
It's time for you to take charge.
Be the man I know you can be.
Remember, live free or die.
Mom! In here.
Dad's leaving.
What?
This can't happen.
Come with me.
Help me with this.
There's some supplies under the house that's only for emergencies.
I want you to bring me the wooden foot locker.
Pineapples and lemons.
Your dad's favorite fruits.
What do you want me to do?
Take care of our problem.
Howdy, boys.
Men, do I have a surprise for you next? Wait a second, man.
What's going on?
Is everything all right?
Me, John, and Russ had a chat, and we decided that you're out of the group.
You can't kick me out of the group.
I'm the fucking commander.
Sammy almost died.
You weren't even there.
Okay, so don't act like you went through that. It doesn't matter.
We took a vote and you're out.
Well, it's not like I lit the fuse.
Okay, we were in it together.
Yeah, we were.
We followed our commander and he almost got us killed.
I can't hear out of this ear anymore, Daniel.
I'm tired of doing stupid shit.
I'm sorry.
Okay, so what, you think it's stupid to stand up for what you believe in?
To fight back?
You're not gonna like the militia very much, then.
The militia actually knows what it's doing.
Guys, I got new supplies.
A new plan. It's gonna be different. Nobody's gonna get hurt. Stop!
It's over.
We don't wanna be a part of it anymore.
You're out.
So that's it?
That's it.
Man, fuck you guys.
I'll do it myself.
So how was your airsoft game?
Don't start shit.
Okay, so what? We're just not friends anymore?
I didn't say that.
You're acting like it, Tyler.
I just need space, okay?
Sammy thing was too much, and I just need time.
Excuse me.
Young man, the last time Tyler spent time with you, Sammy Burke almost died.
Not to mention your other family problems.
Where's your mother?
Eleanor.
Can you come here, please?
The sheriff came to my house last night.
Said his patrol car got blown up.
Thinks one of the boys has something to do with it.
Did he come to your house?
No. Nobody came to our house. And you don't know anything about it?
Why would I know anything about that?
We have stuck our necks out for you.
The least I'd expect is a little support.
in return.
Let's go.
Morning, come on down.
You alright?
Morning.
Hold it right there.
You don't even have the decency to leave us be at church?
What do you think, that Lee's hiding in the pews?
No ma'am.
Daniel Pierce.
Get your hands off him.
Let go of him, ma'am.
You're under arrest for the bombing of the county patrol car.
This is a joke.
How dare you?
How dare you come and do this at the house of God?
Let's go.
You're going to pay for this, Webb.
Do you hear me? You are going to pay for this!
Daniel, don't say anything.
I came and talked to you.
And then you go and do something like this.
What proof do you have that I blew up your car?
Well, I talked to people.
Fuck that.
No, there's no way anybody I know told you shit.
You sure about that?
You really trust all those buddies of yours?
You know, sometimes, Daniel,
People tell me more by what they don't say than what they do.
Well, then all I have to say is I didn't do it.
The truth's gonna come out.
One way or the other.
Because when someone figures out that the secret they're holding on to
is hurting them more than helping them,
they give it up.
No one's gonna help you.
Maybe.
But I'm the only one who can help you.
So you sit here a while.
Think about how you want to spend the next couple decades.
Dad. Hey, buddy.
Come here.
You okay?
I'm alright.
You?
Never better.
Okay.
What is it you have to say?
It was me.
I bombed your patrol car.
Dad, stop. What are you doing? You're fully admitting to the crime.
That's right.
Didn't even tell you what kind of grenade I used. That's not true. He
didn't bomb your car. Shut your mouth!
And you'll be facing your previous charges as well. You know that.
Yes, I do.
Used to let the boy go.
No harm, no foul.
It was me.
All right.
Have a seat.
Daniel, you can come with me.
Huh. Go home, Daniel.
Come on, son. No.
Fuck off. This is bullshit. I'm not leaving.
Dad, what are you doing? Go home!
All right, lastly, we've got range updates.
We'll talk annual fees and new membership.
As far as the range goes, it's been long overdue.
I need all y'all's help.
Calm down.
Y'all gotta do something to help my dad. What's done is done.
So you're just gonna let him rot in jail?
There's not much else that can be done.
Bust him out.
Gather the troops. Defend his liberty.
That's what you do.
You have already severely escalated the situation, son.
You're not thinking.
You have no plan.
You need foolproof plans. So plan something. You're not listening to me.
He already confessed, all right? This is up to the judge.
So you guys aren't gonna do anything?
After everything he's done for you guys! The only way he gets out of this now is
if that sheriff doesn't show up in court.
Good luck with that!
Please. Anybody. Just one person.
Isn't there one person willing to help?
Please, take a vote. You are not part of this militia.
You have no say in our governing rules or our decision-making process.
And any man who wants to follow this boy to their demise will feel the full
strength of my retribution.
You're a coward.
Don't you ever speak like that to me again.
Your anger is misplaced.
Go home, cool off.
And don't you ever let me catch you back here with anything but an apology on
that mouth of yours!
New membership.
What are you doing here, man?
My parents do not want you here.
We need to get the militia back together.
There's no way.
We don't want to be a part of more stupid shit.
This isn't a hangout.
Okay? It's a fucking op.
Look, my dad's in jail.
And nobody's going to lift a finger to help him.
We have to do it ourselves.
The militia isn't going to do anything?
What am I supposed to do?
Get your gun.
I need you, man.
Look, if there was ever a time that you were my friend, now is the time that I
need you.
Jesus.
Come on.
You know it doesn't work like that.
If your dad was in trouble, you know you'd do the same thing.
And you know that if you asked me for help, that I'd be there in a heartbeat.
I'd take a bullet for you, man. You know that.
Look, this is the real shit.
Russ was right.
This is fucking war.
And I need you guys.
You want to make a difference, right?
Yeah.
But what's the plan?
Get John and Russ to sneak out tonight and meet me at Culver Junction.
We're going out.
You're serious.
Live free or die.
Fuck.
Okay.
I'll tell Russ and we'll go from there.
Alright.
I'll see you tonight.
You're gonna be fucking kidding me.
The hell you doing here, Daniel?
Go home before you get into more trouble.
Enough is enough.
How's it going?
Daniel, put your hands out the window now.
Don't do anything stupid, Daniel.
Put your hands on your head.
Step out of the car.
Daniel?
Daniel?
Freeze.
Drop the gun. Drop the fucking gun. Easy, boys.
Drop your weapon.
Bag him.
Give me your hands.
Well done, boys.
Hell yeah, motherfucker.
So what now?
Now you guys go home.
Pretend like this never happened.
Fuck that.
We just nabbed this piece of shit.
Yeah. Now go home so your parents don't catch you.
I'm with Russ, Dan.
We're in this together.
That's the point. No, you follow orders. And I said go home. You're being a
fucking dick, man.
I'm not leaving until this is finished.
It is finished.
Now go home.
No.
Whoa. Get the fuck out of here. What the fuck, man? Jesus, man. Cut this shit
out.
What, you think I'm joking?
Oh, fuck this, man.
I'm out.
You're a psycho.
What are you doing?
You said we'd take him to the militia.
Get out of here.
I mean it.
What are you gonna do?
Just go.
On your knees.
Get down on your knees.
Sit.
So now what?
You let my dad go.
Okay. And then what?
And then you leave town and you never come back.
You don't want to do this.
No, I don't.
But you forced me to.
I wish you'd talk to me when I asked.
I'm sure you've got a lot of things going through your head. I don't want to
talk to you!
You ruined my life!
Why couldn't you just leave my family alone?
You want to protect your family, right?
Damn right.
And you'd do anything for them?
Obviously.
Well, this whole county is my family.
The law is my family.
I do everything I can to protect it.
Bullshit.
That's bullshit.
I don't get paid to help my family.
That's true.
You got a close group of friends.
That's more than money can buy.
Shut up.
You're not gonna trick me into liking you. That shit doesn't work.
You know this is a mistake.
That's why you sent your buddies home.
Keep them out of trouble. That's smart.
You're the only one that's in trouble right now.
Hey, you don't have to talk to me.
But just listen, okay?
It is not too late to turn this thing around.
You don't want to do this.
You got your whole life ahead of you.
Let me go.
I won't press any charges.
You won't go to jail. Do you understand?
I know that you're a good kid.
I know you just want what's best for your family. I get it.
I really do.
Daniel, everyone knows this is not your fault.
Even your dad.
He's on my side.
We all want what's best for you.
That's why he's taking the fall for you.
So come on.
Let's take a deep breath and figure...
Dude.
All right, let's work on your stance first.
Let's get on those railroad tracks, right? Yeah. All right.
Go ahead and grab your weapon.
Go ahead and shoulder it.
There you go. Down range.
Here, move that hand up forward.
Good. Now spin at the waist. Aggressive stance, okay?
How's that feel?
Good. Good?
All right, boys, let's wrap it up and finish this tomorrow, okay?
Y'all go home.
Doing some shooting, huh?
Mm-hmm.
Want to join?
Now you look like you got it under control.
Look, uh... Nathan's sheriff now, so nobody's gonna be coming after you.
What happened... I just wish it would've went different.
I just did what I thought you would have done.
I did what I would have done.
Then I did what you trained me to do.
Look, Daniel, there's some things in my life that I'm not proud of.
I never wanted those things for you.
I wanted you to be better
All
right
