All language subtitles for 14 - Getty Interview—An Update from Keith and Kristyn Getty

you know this is the seventh true woman

event that's been hosted we started a no

8 and then in 2010 we have three events

than 12 and 14 this is event number 7

and at each of those events we've been

led together in worship by Keith and

Kristin Getty and it has been a treat

ended so Keaton and Kristen I'm going to

ask them to come up here where I spent a

little time visiting and then they've

got a couple of new projects we want to

let you know about they're going to lead

us in some singing together but would

you welcome them as they come up you're

Keith and Kristen now they speak Irish

okay so if you have any trouble

understanding what they're saying I'll

try to interpret okay it's the purest

form of English Irish yeah I'll give you

the Arkansas accent for whatever it is I

was thinking about the fact that the

very first event where we were together

you didn't have any children I know I'd

slept so well and I it's just chaos

and now you've got three beautiful

little daughters didn't know I think

we've got a picture let's put it up here

and see if we've got oh yeah there we go

okay so who's in the middle that's

that's Eliza our first board and what is

she playing there that's a big game

first she's playing being first born

okay that's a pink ukulele classic first

board okay and then I'm holding

charlotte charlotte up nearly three and

then Gracie is 15 months and there's

another picture I have to show you this

is of Kristen and the kids when they

came to a cry out event you get

who is then crying out that Charlotte

Braga

that's our middle child and she did not

want to be in the photo it was nap time

and she thought the cry up message was

have a bad temper and and then of course

I looked like the heartless mom he's

laughing but you know hadn't slept

enough it was quite funny but really we

picked her up afterwards and you know

and brought her for her now I I would

imagine that why are you laughing it's

just totally Charlotte it's just so

typical I would imagine

Keith that doing what you do

there's have there's have to have been

some shifts that have happened as a

result of these three blessings coming

into your home yes and no I mean I think

I think it was Martyn lloyd-jones who

once said the the most difficult point

then what the highest pressure life it

is not the person whose career is on the

rise but the person who's the president

of a country is not the person who's ill

but as the mother of sort of a child

under five and so that but that was

lloyd-jones said that in front of a very

high part group of London executives and

in other words in other words that that

point in life you know generating those

who are young as it's a constant kind of

challenge that I have failed in but but

I've had to try to learn so so in one

sense it's still about praying it's

still up like you know investing in your

marriage and your children and your

local church and then working like you

know wise choices with your work but at

the same time it has been it's been a

time where we've had to refocus and have

to relearn and it's been it's been

pretty extraordinary and a load of fun

as well so Kristen six years ago Keith

could say sweetheart come here let's

work on this song and now it's like I

don't have time

right I know it says been that we've had

to relearn a lot of things you know it

used to be I could spend there was a

song I wrote years ago that had I was

talking about sheep I never wondered is

spending an entire day thinking about

sheep and what they were like and why we

were described like she been all the

rest of it and and we go for walks and

talk about what she talked about what

great parents we would make someday will

not be like them we're gonna do this you

know and then neither is not the same

silence and life felt like that sort of

meditation thankful so much for the many

years we had of that you know but nights

at any stage of creativity and new

experiences that have made us look and

understand our faith in a whole new way

take you that first year after had Eliza

I felt like I was real earnings because

it just hit me in all different ways

worries and fears and identity and all

of it and I felt like I was a baby

Christian almost all over again you had

a burden on your heart for kids before

you had kids because I know you all

produced a couple of kids albums and

kids songs before you were ever parents

right the first day actually we ever met

keith was working on a project for the

African children's choir and invited me

to be involved in writing for that

project it's called getting a date

didn't she it was it was very obvious

from all the conversation that there was

pretty much no chemistry whatsoever from

her side so so I figured if I get her he

was 24 min you're 18 24 is really old

Norden I had to become 22 so a fabulous

madness she thought I was this over with

arrogant Presbyterian that dress like a

40 year old so writing songs became the

way to get to hang out with her bored

always been writing for kids has always

been part of things what today is yeah I

don't know how we got from writing songs

for kids to an overweight presbyterian

somehow ages

what okay call us in the line book I

will get this together today is

something of a day of note because it's

a birthday right for for a new project

right yeah over the past 15 years we've

been writing hymns for churches to sing

in Christ alone was was the very first

one we wrote and with with Stewart Onan

and we've continued to do that and we

were at an event which you can probably

talk about we were in them a lovely

private school somewhere in New Jersey

and February and Eliza her fibro was

invited to take part of the in the

kindergarten group and they were all

gathered together all the different

grade groups and they were all going to

sing for us and what they wanted to sing

was in Christ alone and Eliza was

standing with him and she didn't know it

and I was looking at her looking at kid

we're gonna have to fix this because we

sing it so much outside of our home but

hadn't been singing a lot of them inside

our home we've been singing other stuff

and and so I said Keith I would love to

bill to play something in the car I

don't want to listen to my self singing

every day because that would drive me

crazy so we thought we'd bring a kids

choir into the studio and use our

fantastic band there with us today to M

record sort of more kid friendly fun but

live artistic arrangements of the hymns

for the kids so this is what this is

here it is this is the brand-new live

today Getty kids hymnal in Christ alone

it has 12 tracks on it songs we've sung

here this weekend again with it with the

choir kids with your

and yeah and and most of these are songs

you've written although Eli's those

things of this right

she thinks Jesus loves me which was we

have a few traditional hymns within as

well as writes like that and so she got

to come into the studio and she took

over really she's not shy that one the

vision the vision is similar to the

hymns and that is it's the three things

with the hymns which is which is

theology singing an artistry so we want

to teach kids the doctrines of the faith

the Greek passages of Scripture what we

learn when we were young stays with us

the songs that I learned there were

simple songs that talk verses of

Scripture the hymns that I learned when

I was young

helped me understand it really is this

Shema right up in the hearts of our

children so that's part of it part of it

is also teaching our children to sing I

had to meet John MacArthur once and I

was terrified because I thought he

didn't like my songs or something and

but he met me and I said I asked could

he give me some advice on what what

advice did he give to young families

raising children he says the first thing

advice I would give he said after

choosing a good church he says it's fill

every room in your house in every car of

your house with singing yeah you know

congregational singing begins in the

home families who aren't singing

together have no business making

comments and how churches sing it begins

in the home so we want we want that and

and then the third thing was to

encourage creativity so obviously

there's old hymns there's new hymns

there's brand-new hymns there's lots of

different musical styles from big-band

to Celtic to classical and what resulted

then exercises exercises for kids like

one of the songs to the King sing

Hosanna we combined with Handel's water

music because Handel wrote that for King

George for a party in the River Thames

which was what was called the water

music so we encourage kids to listen to

this and then go write a song for a

special occasion so we want a generation

of kids who grow up that our DNA of the

next generation is not only deeply

biblical so that we can be deep

believers to be articulate in this very

tense generation that we live in to be

people who sing and are known for their

singing but also we want we want to grow

up with children that are highly

creative that are innovative that in

every area of life so that's kind of the

three goals behind the project

this is not in Christian bookstores not

yet no the the audio is available on

iTunes the actual CD is only one place

that I know of in America that you can

get it and it's on the other side of

that wall okay they brought a few

thousand of these to true woman and it's

the only place you can get the CD so if

you want this for your kids for your

grandkids for whoever for the neighbor

kids the kids who act up at church I'd

get a copy for their parents just as an

evangelistic kind of an outreach thing

that you're doing just out of the

goodness of your heart you know notes

but they've got the getting kids hymnal

in Christ alone CD right across the hall

over here and it'll be on sale today and

tomorrow and in fact we're going to do a

little concert here and then when we're

done here you guys are going to go over

to autograph these and the band is going

to take a few instruments and do a

little breakout impromptu concert over

the bookstore right we thought they're

going to do a jam session and you're

going to dance oh I didn't know I didn't

know that I was told yeah that will that

will be a jam I guarantee you something

could Jam I think if we did that back in

in the spring our church in Arkansas and

maybe a lot of your churches as well we

all participated together on a Sunday

where we all sang a new hymn that that

you all have recorded called facing a

task unfinished Keith tell us about that

hymn the hymn was written back in the

1930s in political circumstances vastly

worse than ours it was written in China

and when the Chinese government had vied

to exterminate what Christianity or what

they called was the opium of the masses

there was less than three-quarters of a

million believers left in China at the

time and Frank Houghton who was the

Bishop of a Szechuan area of China who

became the leader of the China Inland

Mission Hudson Taylor and C T starts

group wrote this hymn facing a task on

finished as a prayer for people to come

to the mission field ed lost 200

missionaries and his prayers in a

special prayer meeting and he sent to

him around the West the people to sing

and in response to that 204 missionaries

within a short period of time he might

many with their coffins to serve in

China and it's it's an extraordinary

story because it's an extraordinary

story of God's faithfulness and it's an

excerpt me story of first of all of how

what we sing affects every aspect of our

lives and if we're not singing about

mission we're not thinking about it

we're not feeling up we're not praying

about it and we're certainly not weeping

about it and so that that was the first

thing secondly it's a wonderful it's a

wonderful we did it as a fundraiser to

OMF it was their 150th anniversary so it

was premiered in Singapore that made it

the global sing in February but but it

thirdly it's a wonderful good news it's

a reality check but a good news story

because the context of China is

extraordinary persecution in the last

100 years but it's also the context of a

country which has gone from considerably

less than 1 million believers to 82

million richer believers now some

numbers

Barna I think have it as high as 130

million believers Christianity in China

is the fastest growing religion in the

history of the world and so we we live

in an exciting time for answered prayer

yes answered prayer yes for believers

around the world has had extraordinary

things but answer prayer tied to singing

the great truths of our faith
