DEAN: Illusion.
The art of tricking the brain.
Distorting the senses.
Challenging perception.
You can't trust what you see, even with your own eyes,
because your brain can be misled.
Meet "The Masters of Illusion."
DEAN: Can we create the illusion of reality?
Is it the nature of the brain to make the unreal real?
After all that is the purpose of the movies we love and the
paintings we cherish: to take us away.
Well, look at the dynamic of this artwork.
It can actually take us between these temple walls,
down streets that only exist in our imagination.
I'm Dean Cane, and our first performer inhabits a world
that is entirely his own, and he invites us to share it with
him.
He is a truly original master of illusion,
Tony Chapek.
(APPLAUSE) TONY: Thank you!
Thank you, very much.
It is an honor to be here at the Masters of Illusion,
and right now I'd like you to meet my virtual assistant,
The Amazing Tony! (APPLAUSE)
Wake up!
He looks familiar, doesn't he?
TONY (ON TV): What do you want, Tony?
TONY: I want you to help with an amazing magic trick.
TONY (ON TV): Forget it.
TONY: Well, how about if I give you some of this coke?
TONY (ON TV): Alright, but I don't want your germs,
so pour it in here.
(APPLAUSE)
Alright, I'll do it, but make it quick.
TONY: Wonderful.
Ladies and gentlemen, the magic you are about--
(PHONE RINGS)
Go ahead.
TONY (ON TV): Yeah? It's your mother.
TONY: (SIGHS) This'll just take a second.
Give me the phone.
Mom?
How many times have I told you not to call me at work?
TONY (ON TV): I've had it.
TONY: Yes, I'll come visit.
TONY (ON TV): Good bye.
(LAUGHS)
TONY: Ladies and gentlemen,
I apologize for Tony's rude behavior.
Believe me, I can perform magic,
without him. Oh!
What are you doing?
Just watch.
Ladies and gentlemen, I will now amaze you with the
handkerchief of mystery.
What you are about to see you will not believe.
TONY (ON TV): That's a trick hanky.
TONY: It is not.
TONY (ON TV): Oh yeah?
Well let me see it, then.
TONY: If you insist.
(APPLAUSE)
TONY (ON TV) Well, there's only one way to find out!
TONY: Ugh!
I can't believe he did that!
Now what are you doing?
TONY (ON TV): I just wondered what would happen if
I pushed rewind.
TONY: No!
(APPLAUSE)
That does it.
I'm going to unplug him right now.
I'll be right back.
TONY (ON TV): What's picture in picture?
TONY: Now, where's that plug?
Tony, you cut it out.
You cut it out right now.
Tony, I'm warning you-- Oh, no!
Oh, Tony.
(APPLAUSE)
Tony, please?
Hey, Tony, you forgot something.
TONY (ON TV): Uh-oh.
Hey, wait a minute.
I got an idea.
TONY: What are you doing?
TONY (ON TV): What's it look like?
TONY CHAPEK: You can't hide behind a bed sheet!
TONY (ON TV): I can try.
(APPLAUSE)
That's all, folks!
(APPLAUSE)
DEAN: Erix Logan and Sara Maya are about to break all
the rules, leaving nothing left to the imagination.
ERIX: Thank you, very much,
ladies and gentlemen.
A video camera, a magic box, and twenty swords.
You will see what happen inside the box,
thanks to this video live recording.
You are on the screen!
Say "Hello.
It's me!
Yo-hoo!"
Your mind will refuse to watch the illusion because you want
to be fooled.

Thank you very much.
I now have my favorite close-up,
sleight of hand illusion to show you.
Ladies and gentlemen, the cups and balls.
It uses three metal cups, three yellow balls,
and three lovely ladies from the audience.
Do I have any volunteers?
How about the two in the middle right there and the
young lady over here on the end.
Would you three please join me?
How 'bout some encouragement for my three volunteers?

Ladies and gentlemen, my three volunteers.

and smile.
You're in show business.

Please join me behind the table here.
I would like each of you to please pick up a cup and look
inside.
Please show everyone the cup is empty and solid.
Please feel inside of the cup, and please tap the bottom of
the cup.
It's empty and solid.
Then, please put the cup down and pick up a yellow ball.
Please hold it in the air like this and show everyone it is
what it appears to be.
A pom-pom made out of yarn.
Please put the ball on the table,
and watch my hands.
I'll warm up my fingers.
This is how I warm up my fingers.
If you'd like to try that.
Put your hands like this and bend one finger at a time,
and then speed 'em up.
It works pretty well.
This finger comes off, but it always comes back.
I never had one here.
Wanna see the other side?
Look!
No finger!
Doesn't that look real?
It's a trick, but it looks real.
I also use a marker as a magic wand.
It works just as well, and it's easier to carry.
I call it a "Magic Marker."
A magic marker, three yellow balls,
and three metal cups-- lovely young ladies,
please turn the cups upside down.
And then, please put a ball on top of each cup.
Thank you.
Please lift the cup like this and look inside and then
please set it down and watch closely.
Thank you.
Please watch the marker and this yellow ball.
This yellow ball will disappear with the help of the
marker.
Just a spin, and a tap, and it's gone.
This ball disappears just as fast,
see?
Gon-- Oop, I forgot to spin.
You gotta have a spin, and a tap.
Gone.
The last one, without a spin, just a tap-- Gone!
Please lift the cups and notice the balls are back
under the cups.
(APPLAUSE)
Thank you!
Thank you.
Now, it's time for the amazing part.
Please, look inside of the cup;
please, feel inside of the cup;
and then please, cover the ball once again.
Thank you, ladies.
Nice job.
Let's forget about the marker, it's just for distraction,
anyway.
Let's forget about the balls under these cups.
As a fatter of mact, I mean as a matter of fact,
I'll put this ball in my pocket.
I'll put this ball in my pocket too.
Now we only have to think about one ball.
This one.
Not this one, because I put it in my pocket.
Like this.
I put this one in my pocket, too,
but I left those two there.
Did I say two?
I didn't mean to say two.
Do you see two there?
There are two.
Will you put your finger like this,
please?
I meant to say three, will you show us all three?
Look!
Three!
If I put all three in my pocket,
(APPLAUSE)
they go back to the marker.
See 'em in there?
If I put 'em in my pocket again,
they go back to the cups, but they change into live baby
chickens.
On the count of three, please lift the cups.
One, two, three.
Live baby chickens!
(APPLAUSE)
