Sure you don't want some?
Yeah, I don't blame you.
But it's what we got.
I hope you're able to get out of the house soon.
Uh, how's Mrs... umm...?
Sabino.
And she would insist on you calling her Dottie.
Um, her condition's holding.
She's in bed now, so I should have some time to chat.
In bed? It's only 8:00 where you are.
Dude, she's old and sick.
She's dealing with a lot.
I don't like you staying in that house.
You're taking way too much of a risk.
What's your temperature?
Mom didn't raise us to look the other way
when it comes to people in need.
Zoe. Temperature.
It's only slightly elevated,
and it doesn't necessarily mean that I've got it.
Okay?
I mean, God willing, I don't.
God has nothing to do with whether you get it or not.
I should just record you saying that
for when you're not around.
With all this going on,
I don't understand how you can still believe in him anyway.
I have faith in him.
I believe in you.
Look, when we get this thing figured out,
I'll get it to as quick as I can, okay?
I just hope it's not too late.
[TAPS ON WINDOW]
[TAPS ON WINDOW]
[TAPS ON WINDOW]
Why are we trying so hard?
So much hate in the world.
So much ignorance.
Think we were better off?
Maybe we've just been fighting the symptoms
and not the disease.
[FRONT DOOR RATTLES]
Hide!
[FRONT DOOR RATTLING INTENSELY]
MARTY HALL (VO): ...Commissioner's Office that the suspension of the baseball season
has been extended another 30 days.
With last night's devastating news that Wendell Fuller
died from the Erythro Virus, League sources...
SUSAN: ...good to see you.
GRANT: And I missed you.
Hey guys. Am I too early?
No... we're just waiting on the others.
Hey Theo. How you holding up?
Oh, missing live baseball, but other than that...
You? Are you...?
I'm... I'm good.
Just staying snuggled up with that monster.
Lucky! Kiss her on the snout for me.
Oh, I will. Plenty of times.
Oh, uh... do you have any news from Zoe?
NATE: Okay, what is going on?
Are we good? Can we come back yet?
Let's wait till everyone's here.
I only want to have to go through this once.
NATE: So it's bad then?
SUSAN: He hasn't said anything yet.
Calm down.
No, they told us two weeks
and that was over three weeks ago.
Nate, come on, buddy.
Yo, they can't keep dicking us around.
If you get sick, you can't come to poker night.
Then your wallet's gonna be way too thick,
and that's not good for anybody.
You can't take all his money.
I have a pet to feed.
ANNA: Ah! Happy to see all your faces.
Everybody ready?
We are now.
NATE: All right, let's hear it then.
[BIG SIGH]
There's no easy way to say this.
The administration is extending virtual learning
and pulling the plug on all projects.
Get the hell out of here.
What about our research?
I'm sorry.
My guy at the CDC thinks what we're doing is promising.
NATE: So we can't even get back in the lab then?
Labs, classes, the whole campus...
Everything is shut down. Effective immediately.
They have to let us back in.
The work we're doing... it can help people.
If we're willing to take the risk...
The University isn't.
Look, I'm sure you've all been watching the news.
You've seen how much worse things have gotten.
New cases rising exponentially.
The death toll has gotten out of control...
ANNA: That's exactly why we can't afford to stop.
GRANT: You're not even close to ready for human trials.
NATE: We'd be a hell of a lot closer maybe
if we weren't stuck at home all this time.
GRANT: There are experts all over the world working on this.
Let them handle it.
NATE: This virus will never take a vacation.
Those are your words.
Don't sideline us.
ANNA: You have to let us try.
Maybe we'll find something that no one else has.
I can't let you break quarantine.
THEO: Guys, Grant's right. [TEXT MESSAGE CHIME]
If we get ourselves sick, who does that help?
This isn't productive. [TEXT MESSAGE CHIME]
We just need to drop it.
Agreed?
Thanks, Grant.
We know this isn't you.
You've always had our backs.
We just... we just care
a lot.
And I care about you.
I want you all to stay safe.
We appreciate you, boss.
If any of you need anything at all,
I'll be around.
So are we just giving up then?
Of course not.
[POLICE SIRENS]
[POLICE SIRENS FADE AWAY]
RADIO NEWS ANCHOR: Good evening,
this is Rae Linwood with continuing coverage
of The Erythro Virus.
Recently dubbed The Red Virus by social media
due to its attack on red blood cells,
researchers are still unsure...
...the CDC now warns it is more virulent
than anything humanity has ever seen.
American deaths now eclipse one million, a pace...
...indicate that any potential treatment is months not weeks...
...predicting the death rate to increase, Governor Andrews has
issued a mandatory stay-at-home order, effective immediately.
Noncompliance... [RADIO SNAPPED OFF]
[VIALS PLACED IN PAPER BAG]
[KNOCK ON WINDOW]
[CELL PHONE BUZZES]
I can't... I can't do it.
You... you have to.
We all agreed.
We have 16 samples. That's four apiece.
Without you, there's not enough time to test them all.
And with me?
We'll have to get lucky.
NATE: Yeah, this is stupid.
Theo, back me up here, man.
SUSAN: The world is out of options, Nate.
The world isn't purposefully
injecting itself with the virus
like a bunch of goddamn idiots.
I guess that makes me a goddamn idiot.
NATE: How are you feeling?
ANNA: Fine.
So far.
I thought you were all with me.
SUSAN: We are with you.
Right guys?
No... No, I'm sorry.
Let's get your grandpa on the phone,
see what he says.
He can't be helped.
And I'm in no rush to follow him.
It's too late for a lot of people.
But there's still a lot more out there we can help.
We may die trying.
Hell, we probably will.
But wouldn't you rather try than just sit around and wait?
I vote we try.
Obviously.
THEO: If there's any chance for any of us,
it's going to take all of us doing our part.
This doesn't work unless we're all in.
All in, huh?
All right,
I call.
You guys are all smiling... Does that mean yes?
NATE: How long have you been playing cards with us?
ANNA: Apparently not long enough.
[unnerving music]
[unnerving music]
Hey, I'm back.
ZOE: Everybody just needs to stay out of your way
and let you do your thing.
For crying out loud,
they ought to give you some kind of a medal
for your tenacity alone.
Well, I appreciate the overwhelming support.
ZOE: [LAUGHS] I mean it.
No, I know you do.
But we still have a long way to go
before we get anything viable.
So maybe no parades just yet, okay?
Who would have guessed...
the little brat who used to wet the bed
down the hall for me is gonna fix the world.
We still have to make it through human trials first.
ZOE: I know, I know.
I'll be praying for you.
I don't... ZOE: Yeah. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Save it.
I'm gonna anyway.
[suspenseful music]
Well, this looks terrible!
How do I fix this?
Can I fix it?
Or do I just keep lying to them?
Susan's gonna hate me either way.
"It's gonna take all of us.
We all have to do our part!"
What kind of an asshole am I?
Don't answer that.
Maybe I should just... [KNOCKS ON FRONT DOOR]
[KNOCKS ON FRONT DOOR]
Is she here?
No.
Have you talked to her?
Who?
Susan.
She's not responding to any of my calls or texts.
Well... she was pretty pissed you shut us down.
That's why I'm so concerned.
I think she might do something reckless.
I doubt that.
She's the smartest person I know.
Someone took our samples from the lab.
Along with vials of the virus.
And you think it was Susan?
She never dodges my calls.
If it'll make you feel better, I'll reach out to Susan.
Have her call you.
No promises.
How's Veronica?
Healthwise, she's fine.
Supposed to take a trip to Cabo after the semester.
Ten years.
Kind of treating it like a second honeymoon.
She's obviously disappointed.
We both are.
[GRANT COUGHS]
Mind if I grab a glass of water?
Let me get it for you!
[suspenseful music]
Is that what I think it is?
You didn't give us a choice.
Where is she?
I'm alone.
Then who were you talking to when I showed up?
Nobody.
Don't lie to me!
I saw you through the window!
There's nobody here...
Susan?!
Susan?
Grant, she's not here.
Feel free to kill yourself, but leave her out of it.
Susan?!
Susan?!
[music intensifies]
I didn't think you had the balls to do something so stupid.
Susan?!
Susan?!
[PLUG RIPPED OUT]
Shit.
[GLASSES CRUNCH]
[THEO SIGHS]
[music intensifies]
ANNA: [COUGHS] ...and my... my B.P. keeps going up.
Stay diligent.
Let's make sure it doesn't get too high.
Theo, you made it.
You had us worried for a minute.
Hey, Anna's not last for a change.
Shush.
Yeah, sorry about that, guys.
Umm... computer issues.
Battery still?
Should've gotten that fixed before the world exploded.
Uh, what'd I miss?
SUSAN: We were just in the middle of updating each other.
NATE: Spoiler alert,
we all feel like shit.
Yeah. Same here.
You're looking stronger today, though.
Must be having a good day, I guess.
What's your temperature?
101 even.
Same as yesterday.
You're the only one that didn't show an increase.
Our first legit bright spot.
Yeah, we could use some good news for a change.
[THEO COUGHS]
Let's not get ahead of ourselves.
NATE: Don't do that.
Come on, let us have this one.
SUSAN: It's only one reading.
It might not mean anything.
[GRANT GRUNTING, WAKING UP]
SUSAN: Right, Theo?
Huh?
God, I wish I had booze in the house.
That is why I stay fully stocked.
SUSAN: You can't drink.
NATE: Yes, Mom... we know. [LAUGHS]
[GRANT GRUNTS]
NATE: You know what sounds even better than having a drink?
Having a drink outside.
ANNA: With people.
I can't wait.
I'm getting so sick of talking to myself.
SUSAN: You're not the only one.
NATE: Hey, at least you got the pup.
I'm over here assigning personalities to my appliances.
SUSAN: [LAUGHS] That's so sad.
You're telling me... My toaster's a real dick!
ANNA: What's everyone else's first drink in the new world gonna be?
[GRANT GRUNTS]
[GRANT MUFFLED YELL]
[BODY THUDS TO FLOOR]
[GRANT GRUNTS]
[GRANT MOANS]
[FIRE CRACKLES]
[eerie music]
You've been spending a lot of time by yourself lately.
It's kinda sad.
Trust me. I know.
I don't think you do.
How much longer you gonna play cards with a lamp?
What's next?
What else is there?
I don't know.
Take a road trip.
There's this is guy I knew...
one weekend his wife his wife went out of town,
so he had the whole place to himself.
Now if it were me,
I'd go out, catch a movie, grab a drink, see some people.
But not this guy.
No... this guy decides to stay in,
hit the sack early.
[THEO SIGHS]
GRANT: Jumps in the shower,
and then from somewhere deep in the house...
Tap, tap, tap.
But he can barely hear it over the sound of the water,
so he ignores it.
A couple of minutes later...
[GRANT TAPS THREE TIMES]
It's louder this time.
Closer.
He opens the shower door, peers out,
but... there's nothing there.
And then again... Tap, tap, tap.
This time, though, accompanied by a ghostly voice.
"You need to leave."
Shakes it off, climbs into bed.
Tap, tap, tap.
"You don't belong here."
Flings open the bedroom door,
looks out in the hallway.
There's no one there.
Tap, tap, tap.
"Get out of the house."
Checks under the bed, in the closet...
still nothing. So back to bed.
Sick of it,
he puts his headphones on to drown it out.
Tap, tap, tap.
It's muffled, but it's still there.
Tap, tap, tap.
Closer.
Tap, tap, tap.
Closer.
Terrified, he yanks the covers up over his head,
cowering in the darkness.
And then he hears it, one last time,
through the headphones...
Tap, tap, tap.
Next morning, his wife comes home.
She opens the front door and calls out, "Honey, I'm home."
No response.
She makes her way down the hall to their bedroom door.
It's closed, which is a little weird.
She turns the knob, pushes the door in.
Nothing. It's vacant.
She goes over to their bed, pulls the covers back,
and there sitting on her husband's pillow...
are his headphones.
[THEO SIGHS]
And then WHAM!
The bedroom door slams shut behind her.
She shrieks, spins around, and sees...
scratched into the inside of their bedroom door
a warning to all, his final words...
GRANT: "There was never anyone here." THEO: "There was never anyone here."
[THEO LAUGHS]
You've heard that one?
I love that story.
It's one of my favorite urban legends.
I mean, it's not exactly the way I would've told it.
Oh yeah?
You "knew this guy," huh?
Yeah, sure. He's a teacher
from a different school up the road.
What? I knew the guy, you knew the guy,
it's all the same.
Sure.
I need another drink.
You're not the only one.
[DARTS THUNK INTO DARTBOARD]
I can't just let him leave.
Right?
What do I do?
Just keep him tied up in the garage?
For how long?
[DART THUNKS IN DARTBOARD]
Why do I always seem to be holding pointy things
when I'm talking to you?
I don't know why I'm talking to you at all.
You're no help.
No... I can't do that.
Can I?
It's in no way ethical.
Or moral.
[ominous music]
The needs of the many.
[DOOR OPENS]
[GRANT'S BREATHING INTENSIFIES]
Mmm. Mmm. Mmm!
Mmmm! Mmmm!
Ssshhh. Sshhhh. Sshh. Sshh, sshh, sshh.
It's okay... it's okay.
I'm sorry.
[GRANT GRUNTING]
You're about to get really sick.
You should probably save your energy.
Besides... the nearest living neighbor's...
eight houses down...?
If he's even still there.
It's gonna be okay.
I can fix this.
[THEO CHUCKLES] You kinda look ridiculous.
[GRANT GRUNTS]
THEO: Fastball, fouled away,
evens the count at a ball and a strike.
Fuller comes set, delivers,
and it's ripped into right center field,
splits the gap,
this one's gonna roll all the way to the wall.
Ramirez rounds third.
Here comes the play at the plate...
He is... he's safe at home!
And the Mets have tied the ballgame!
And wasting no time,
here comes the manager out of the dugout.
That's gonna do it for Fuller.
Taking over out of the 'pen is the right-hander Carlyle.
This call to the bullpen brought to you by...
corporate sponsorship!
Because the world may be over, but we've still got bills to pay.
God, I'd love to watch real baseball again.
You are not the only one.
[ZOMBIE GROANS FROM TV]
[breaking news music]
NEWS ANCHOR: Tonight, we bring you sobering news out of Atlanta.
Good evening, I'm Ben Moorhead
with your Local Five breaking news alert.
The Centers for Disease Control
reports we have now surpassed the threshold
of 20 million American deaths.
As The Red rages on,
the worldwide total is fast approaching
half a billion.
With a vaccine still nowhere on...
[FOOSBALL TABLE SOUNDS]
[PHONE BUZZES WITH A CALL]
[PHONE CONTINUES TO BUZZ]
What?!
It's not like I can just answer it.
[PHONE BUZZES WITH TEXT MESSAGE]
[GRANT COUGHS WEAKLY]
[DOOR CLOSES]
How we feeling today?
[THERMOMETER BUZZES]
Someone's popular all of a sudden.
What's your passcode?
No?
[THEO SIGHS]
I'm guessing this is one of those thumbprint models?
[THEO GRUNTS]
Okay...
Let's disable that shit.
Now...
how should I respond to your wife?
"Hi, honey.
Bit tied up right now..."
Too cheesy?
Needs to sound like you...
What would you say?
Go fuck yourself.
I don't think that'd go over very well.
Uhh...
Alright, hopefully that's good enough for now.
By the way,
you must have some relationship with your mechanic.
Gotten a ton of texts from Bob's Auto Body.
They're worried about you.
They think you've been avoiding them.
Seems super clingy to me!
[GRANT GRUNTS]
[muffled] Theo... Theo! Theo!
[muffled] Theo!!!
[SLAMS LAPTOP CLOSED]
[PLAYING CARDS SHUFFLED]
[STACKING POKER CHIPS]
Shit.
You winning?
Down a little.
You know they're not real, right?
He knows they're not real, right?
What do you want, Grant?
You looked empty.
I'll be around if you need me.
[THEO SIGHS]
Hey...
[PLAYING CARDS SHUFFLED]
Anna, 13. Nate, ten. Susan, 12.
And dealer showing a six.
Anna?
Hit me.
You sure?
You're gonna take his bust card.
And my ten.
I only have 13, though.
Well, I only have 12, but I'm not taking another card.
Well, I agree with Susan, but it's up to you.
What are we doing?
Hit me.
Okay.
NATE: Which ten is it?
THEO: Jack of spades.
23, player busts.
Nate, doubling?
Ace me, baby!
[ANNA COUGHING]
18, not too bad.
NATE: I will take it.
She stole your 20.
How are you not pissed?
Why should I be?
I got my energy back,
I'm on top of my blackjack game, and...
oh, yeah, in case you forgot...
we may have just saved the goddamn world! [LAUGHS]
Bit early to start celebrating.
NATE: Where's the cigarette girl?
I could use me a cigar!
ANNA: Yuck.
Shouldn't smoke.
We are celebrating. Remember?
Keep up.
If your condition holds,
I'll reach out to my friend at the CDC
and start making the arrangements.
Fingers crossed.
And they'll probably give you all the nasty cigars that you want.
Okay Susan, you're up... 12.
SUSAN: Against a six, stay. Obviously.
ANNA: That still just seems silly to me.
Dealer has... uh oh... 11.
14... that's a good card for you guys.
And... 20.
SUSAN: Of course. Nice hand, Anna.
ANNA: They're my cards.
I can play them however I want.
NATE: I wanna request a dealer change.
This guy never busts.
[GROUP LAUGHTER]
Alright, weird thing...
I got a call from Grant's wife.
NATE: You too?
ANNA: Yeah, I don't know about you guys, but...
I've never talked to just her before.
It's always just been the both of them.
Always.
NATE: Anybody else hear from her?
No.
[SHUFFLES CARDS]
I mean, she tried calling, but I... I missed it.
I was in the other room.
Uh, same bets?
SUSAN: Sure.
ANNA: Yeah.
NATE: Up mine by 15.
[DISTRIBUTING POKER CHIPS]
[CARDS SHUFFLED]
So Veronica called the whole team?
ANNA: Sounds like it.
Susan?
Umm, I missed her call, too.
Same thing, basically.
Wasn't at my computer.
Been meaning to call her back.
Uh... no more bets.
[CARDS BEING DEALT]
Alright, here we go...
Uh, Anna 17.
Nate, 20.
Susan, 16.
And dealer shows a nine.
What did she say?
You guys need to talk to her.
It's... it's about Grant.
SUSAN: What about him?
Uh, Anna... 17 against a nine?
ANNA: Uh... stay...
He hasn't been home in a few days or something.
Nate, 20?
Well, I'm not splitting, so...
Wait, has Grant reached out to any of you?
THEO: I'm sure he's fine.
Maybe... maybe we should call him.
[suspenseful music]
Susan!
SUSAN: What?
16 against a nine?
I don't care.
Hit, I guess.
Way too many, player busts.
And dealer has... 19.
Nate's the only winner.
[NATE LAUGHS]
Suck it, losers! [LAUGHS]
Pay me my money! [COUGHS]
It's one hand.
Don't get so excited.
Hey, Nate.
[NATE'S COUGHING WORSENS]
Nate, what's wrong, buddy?
SUSAN: Nate, this isn't funny.
[NATE'S COUGHING INTENSIFIES]
THEO: Nate.
SUSAN: Hey, breathe, just... ANNA: Nate!
SUSAN: Deep breath. Deep breath.
Nate!!!
[NATE GASPS FOR AIR]
[intense music]
Nate, come on, this isn't funny.
[NATE WHEEZES FINAL BREATH]
[SYRINGE LANDS ACROSS THE ROOM]
[HEAD THUNKS AGAINST GLASS]
[ANGUISHED BREATHING]
[somber music]
[DOOR OPENS]
Nate's dead.
[FIRE CRACKLES]
[PHONE BUZZES]
We'd kind of met before, but...
just, like, hellos.
Nothing really.
[COUGHS]
So we show up at the lab to get started,
and Nate's got these two huge ginormous cups of coffee.
[ANNA COUGHS]
So he sets them down and turns to do whatever.
I swear. I SWEAR...
he smiled at me and he gestured.
So I take one.
[CHUCKLES]
He turns back and he sees me taking a sip.
You should have seen him.
His eyes pop out of his head
like one of those old cartoon characters
and jaw drops so hard it hits the floor, cracks the tile.
[LAUGHS]
And he's like, "What are you doing?"
And I go,
"Thanks for bringing us coffees."
And he says, in that oh-so-Nate way,
"I didn't bring us coffees, but you're welcome."
[LAUGHS]
"If you want one tomorrow, bring three."
[SUSAN AND THEO LAUGH]
I've tried calling a couple people.
Get ahold of his family.
Let them know what happened.
The few I could reach anyway.
SUSAN: Anna... do you want to say anything?
No.
Do you not have a Nate story?
[SUSAN'S PHONE CHIMES]
ANNA: Of course I do.
I have tons of Nate stories.
Who doesn't?
Uh... then what's wrong?
[ANNA SCOFFS]
I don't believe it.
He isn't dead.
He's messing with us.
[THEO'S PHONE BUZZES]
What? Wait... why would you think...
ANNA: Because he's Nate.
That's just... that's what he does.
Not like this.
Okay, he got better. We all saw him get better.
SUSAN: Anna, that's not true.
Nate is gone. But we're not.
We need to stay on track.
ANNA: Nate already found the answer, and he's probably...
[ANNA COUGHS]
on the way over here with it right now.
We just... we just have to wait.
There's no time for this.
Okay, we need to move on and start the next trial.
[ANNA COUGHS]
Theo, back me up.
I can't.
THEO: I already talked Nate into dying.
If we do nothing, we're all going to die here.
Whatever happened to all in?
I have to fold.
I guess I'm on my own.
If anyone remembers why we're doing this in the first place
and comes to their senses...
see you tomorrow afternoon.
And if not...
[SUSAN CLICKS END]
[ANNA CLICKS END]
[THEO'S PHONE BUZZES]
[THEO CLOSES LAPTOP]
[MYSTERIOUS SOUNDS]
Grant?
[ominous music]
Grant?
[CRITTERS SCURRYING ON ROOF]
Ah! Oh... it's just you.
Have you seen Grant? No?
[CREATURES SCURRYING]
Find the bat!
[ominous music]
[CREATURES APPROACH]
[CREATURES ROAR]
[THEO STARTLES AWAKE]
You kinda look ridiculous.
Where were you last night?
GRANT: What do you mean?
I was calling out to you.
Where the hell were you?
Where else is there?
[OUTDOOR NATURE SOUNDS]
[suspenseful music]
Is that really necessary?
How could you do that?
You really want to go there?
Talk about putting other people at risk?
[UNZIPS PANTS]
We were a team.
GRANT: We're supposed to be.
How can I trust you now?
GRANT: Do we have a choice?
[CENTRIFUGE SPINS]
[CENTRIFUGE SLOWS AND STOPS]
Looks good.
I was exposed all night and didn't get sick...?
Think that means it's safe to go outside?
I can't afford to get sick.
What makes you so special?
Because my sister needs me.
Hell of a lotta good you're doing her from here.
Stay inside! Or don't come back.
[GRANT COUGHS]
THEO: You must be bored sitting around all day.
Wanna play a game?
GRANT: Move my bishop three spaces.
THEO: This one?
GRANT: Other one. And that way.
So, um... Anna's pretty rattled.
I don't blame her.
THEO: They're both scheduled to move on
to their next trial today, but...
we need to find a way to get through to her.
GRANT: What about "you"?
Did you just do air quotes behind your back?
[GRANT LAUGHS, THEN COUGHS]
You heard those.
[THEO CHUCKLES]
How's Susan?
She appreciates the data you've provided.
Glad I could do my part.
[GRANT HISSES IN PAIN]
They fired more advisors today.
[GRANT SCOFFS] Of course they did.
Knight takes Pawn.
There's no point believing in science that doesn't agree with you.
GRANT: Pretty soon there won't be anybody left.
Interesting...
Now what are you up to?
GRANT: I'm gonna castle.
[GRANT COUGHS]
[PHONE BUZZES]
GRANT: That mine?
She misses you.
Veronica?
Bob's Auto Body.
[THEO CAPTURES CHESS PIECE]
Your move.
She's just some girl.
GRANT: I've had a lot of time alone in here to reevaluate...
And?
I love my wife.
Does she know? About "Bob"?
GRANT: Please don't tell her.
She deserves better.
[SOFA SQUEALS ACROSS FLOOR]
[CHESS PIECES CLATTER TO FLOOR]
Wait.
Can you help me fix this?
While I still can?
Will you text her back for me?
Bob?
Yes, Bob.
I need to end it.
What do you want to say?
"Sorry I've been distant.
"You know how much I care about you.
"But I need to tell you something,
"and this might be my only chance.
"I never meant to hurt you,
"but I can't keep doing this to my wife.
"I'm so sorry.
I hope you understand."
Get all that?
[DOOR OPENS AND CLOSES]
[intense music]
[GRANT'S PHONE BUZZES]
[delicate music]
Didn't know if I'd see you.
We're still a team.
You look a little better.
I've been up and down.
Anna?
SUSAN: She's online.
Huh, she's early for once.
She's been on since I got here.
Still hasn't called.
THEO: She will.
I... I should've had your back.
Nate was not your fault.
We're responsible to each other,
but we're only responsible for our own actions.
I broke into the lab.
I gave you all the virus, and I never even...
I should've just kept my mouth shut.
[CHUCKLES] If wishes were toilet paper,
we would be shit out of luck.
He didn't want to, and I talked him into it.
Did you talk me into it?
Or Anna?
He did it because it needed to be done.
And you know how Nate was.
He would have come to it on his own eventually.
You never did get to give your eulogy.
Looks like we have some time.
He deserves way better than I can offer.
That was shorter than I expected, but effective.
[SUSAN AND THEO LAUGH]
He always did appreciate brevity
from other people anyway.
[OVEN TIMER CHIMES]
[KNIFE PULLED FROM WOOD BLOCK]
[PHONE BUZZES]
[PHONE BUZZES]
This would be so much easier if we hadn't lost access to the lab.
Be honest.
This whole plan of yours, it was Susan's idea, wasn't it?
It was a team decision.
But, yeah, Susan was the driving force.
Mm hm. Mm hm.
I've always liked her,
and I knew it couldn't have been you,
not the way you were around needles.
I remember...
Mom would make me go in the room with you and hold your hand
so you wouldn't run away from the doctor.
I'm proud of you.
ZOE: You've really grown up a lot
in your old age. [LAUGHS]
Well, I had you to
literally hold my hand through the toughest times.
ZOE: [CHUCKLES] It was so cute
how tight you'd squeeze when... [ZOE COUGHING FIT]
Zoe?
[COUGHING] I'm fine.
Goddamn it, Zoe.
Don't... don't say that.
You know how much I hate that.
Well, then... regular damn it.
It's too late. I already know what you mean.
Seriously, I'll... I'll be okay.
This is where I can do my part.
I have to stay,
and you're the one who can get out there and help.
I can't leave.
Well, no, not right now.
But eventually you're gonna have to.
If anything happens to you...
Ugh, God, you're more overbearing than Mom was.
I'm not going anywh... [GENERATOR SHUTS OFF]
Zoe?
Oh, God...
[POURING GAS]
[LOCKED DOOR]
THEO: What are you doing?
Let me in!
[CREATURES ROARING]
Please, I can't lose her.
[THEO COUGHING FIT]
[CREATURE ROARS GROWING LOUDER]
[FIRE CRACKLES]
[THEO JOLTS AWAKE]
[THEO GRUNTS]
GRANT: Welcome back.
You had us worried there for a minute.
[GRANT STANDS AND WALKS INTO KITCHEN]
[FREEZER DOOR OPENS]
[ICE CUBES PUT IN GLASS]
Why'd you lock me out?
I didn't.
[eerie music]
[GRANT SITS IN CHAIR]
What do you think you remember?
I went outside to restore the power and...
I couldn't get back in.
You wouldn't let me in.
GRANT: Okay...
So how'd you end up in that chair?
One of you must've... One of us?
[GRANT LAUGHS]
Seriously?
[GRANT LAUGHS] I don't know what to tell you, man.
You're losing it.
I think you need to get out more.
[GRANT GETS UP]
I miss them.
Who?
People.
Birthday party at a crowded bar...
conversations with strangers in line at the bank...
hell, even people who talk in the middle of movies.
Well... maybe less so them, but still.
[THEO CHUCKLES]
I actually wouldn't mind sitting in traffic again one day.
You're not the only one.
Is that check?
Not yet.
[THERMOMETER BUZZES]
[PHONE BUZZES]
[THEO CHUCKLES]
[POKER CHIPS BEING SHUFFLED]
[COMPUTER MOUSE CLICKS]
[CABINET CLOSES]
[FREEZER OPENS]
[DRINK POURS]
[THEO TAKES DEEP BREATH]
[COMPUTER MOUSE CLICKS]
[VERONICA COUGHS]
Hey, Veronica.
Hey... it's good to finally hear from you.
I got really concerned when I... I couldn't reach you or Susan.
And now Anna and Nate have fallen off the radar, too.
I'm really scared, Theo.
I know.
Grant was so sure that they would find a way to beat this.
We're still working on it.
I thought that they shut you down.
I won't tell if you won't.
You know I'm really glad that you're, umm...
that you're plugging away at it.
He would be really proud.
I hope you realize how hard he fought for you.
He did?
Yeah... yeah, he really loves you guys.
He brags about you like you're family.
Have you heard from him at all?
I'm sorry.
Well, he may not even be...
umm... if you do end up talking to him...
Don't let him come home.
He's probably better off staying where he is.
[BROKEN ROOK SAWING ROPE]
You're awfully quiet today.
Your temperature's come down a bit
since we started the new round of treatment.
I'm sure Susan will be happy to hear that.
You look a little better too.
Appetite's coming back.
That's good.
I'll run some more blood tests,
see what's going on in there.
So what's wrong then?
I thought you'd be thrilled over the slightest improvement.
Are you gonna play with that or am I gonna eat it?
I spoke with Veronica last night.
She's... not good.
How long does she have?
Give me my phone.
No.
Theo, please... let me talk to her.
I can't.
Fine, then you call her, put her on speaker, whatever...
I want to talk to my wife!
The treatment's working... isn't it?
We don't know that for sure.
But it could be.
If there's any chance to save her,
we have to do everything we can.
There is nothing we can do.
Nothing you can do?
Or want to do?
[GRANT SCOFFS]
You're a hypocrite.
You'll kill your friends, but you won't save my wife?
What's the point of doing all this if you're just gonna give up now?
GRANT: I thought you were willing to take risks!
You haven't taken a single risk!
You want to play hero, but you're not.
You're nothing but a coward.
Let me do something.
Help her!
[DOOR OPENS]
GRANT: Theo, no. Come on!
You can't shut me out. You can't shut me out!
[HEAVY BREATHING]
That's another street tapped.
I'll start on Trammel next.
How is this helping?
I'm doing what's best for both of us.
You're just wasting everyone's time.
[DARTS THUNK INTO DARTBOARD]
And close 19.
[MAGNETIC DARTS HIT BOARD]
Mmmmmm... nothing that counts.
At least you hit the board this time.
Hey, I'm playing with this stupid kid's toy.
Wish I had real darts.
If wishes were toilet paper...
Yeah, yeah. Take your turn.
[DARTS THUNK IN DARTBOARD]
One 17 and one 15.
Are you sure that's in line?
Bring me closer.
THEO: I can't.
Ah! Cheater. Why?
Because if I get unplugged, I'm gonna lose you.
SUSAN: Mmm. Mmhmmm.
No, really.
Look how short this stupid cable is.
Ahh! Oh. [LAUGHS]
What? What happened?
[SUSAN LAUGHS]
She scared me.
[THEY BOTH LAUGH]
Ugh, how do you live with that thing?
Doesn't your pup ever startle you?
Only when she sneak up on me.
Yeah, exactly.
She doesn't move.
She doesn't sneak.
She's a mannequin,
not a ninja.
Mmmmmmm... still creepy.
Eh.
[SUSAN COUGHING]
Susan?
[SUSAN'S COUGHING INTENSIFIES]
Susan!
[SUSAN'S COUGHING GETS WORSE]
[THE COUGHING CALMS]
[DOG BARKING]
[SUSAN HEAVY BREATHING]
Susan... are you... are you okay?
Too much fun maybe?
You're not just trying to get out of the game, are you?
I just need a minute.
Shit. Sorry. Reflex.
Expecting a call?
Am I a rotten person?
No.
What are you talking about?
Normally I'd run this sorta thing by...
probably anyone but you.
Oh, gee, thanks.
[LAUGHS] That's not what I mean.
I... I get it. Who else is there?
Before this all started happening,
everything went to shit,
there was this guy.
This married guy.
Oh. Anyone I know?
Just some guy.
We've been texting since the lockdown,
but he refuses to call [COUGHS] or video chat.
[SUSAN COUGHS]
Hell with him then. He sounds like an asshole.
[SUSAN LAUGHS]
Yeah, maybe he is.
Maybe we both are.
I mean, where is this even going?
What kind of future could we possibly have?
Break it off.
Stop texting him.
I could.
Probably should.
But you don't want to.
I shouldn't even be talking to you about this.
You're not exactly unbiased.
You know?
I've always known, Theo Everyone knows.
I wasn't sure if you'd ever say anything.
I didn't think it would matter.
I mean, maybe if we were the last two people on Earth.
[THEY BOTH LAUGH]
Maybe.
Oh, well, in that case
you should absolutely dump his ass.
[THEY BOTH LAUGH]
Is that what you were looking for?
A reason to end it,
or a reason not to?
The conversations have been great.
It finally feels like he's
really listening and responding.
He's been more forthcoming, more honest.
I just wish I could see his face
or at least hear his voice.
Does he make you happy?
Right now? Yes.
Then you have your answer.
[FOOSBALL GAME]
You finally found the one thing you're better at than me.
Good news is, I've got plenty of time to get better.
It's not like we're going anywhere.
Yeah, well... that one's on you!
Come on, guys. You gotta work together out there.
Best of seven?
[SIGHS] You can't keep sitting around all day
playing games with your imaginary friends.
Your focus is in the wrong place.
[THEO PUTS BALL INTO PLAY]
[THEO PLAYS SOLO]
[THEO SLAMS SCORING BEAD]
Come on, let's go.
Play the goddamn game!
We're done.
Thanks.
[DART THUNKS IN DARTBOARD]
I need you to hear me.
Get out of my way, Grant.
The only person in your way is you.
Move!
There are people out there.
You can still help them.
Last chance.
Theo, you're not the only one.
[DART THUNKS IN DARTBOARD]
SUSAN: If this last one looks like it's failing,
and I still have the strength,
I know where Nate kept his spare key.
What about Anna? Do we... do we know if she ever...?
[SUSAN FIGHTS BACK TEARS]
We never should've done this.
Too many people have gotten hurt already.
When I was a kid and got sick,
my dad would often disagree with the doctors.
At one point, I think I was... seven,
he started going into the lab
and brewing up remedies of his own.
It was wrong. He knew that.
But it gave him comfort
to know he had the power to make his little girl feel better.
We have to keep in mind
why we started this all in the first place.
You're conflating a shitty result with an unworthy cause.
[SUSAN COUGHING FIT]
My current trial is showing promise.
I'm hoping to know for sure in another day or two.
So you just stay with me.
What? No poker pun about throwing away my cards?
[GARAGE DOOR OPENING]
SUSAN: What's wrong?
Nothing. I, umm... Don't go away.
[WINDOW ON KITCHEN DOOR SHATTERS]
[KITCHEN DOOR UNLOCKED]
[KITCHEN DOOR CREAKS OPEN]
[FOOTSTEPS THROUGH BROKEN GLASS]
[REFRIGERATOR DOOR OPENS]
[RATTLE OF VIALS]
[REFRIGERATOR DOOR CLOSES]
[KNIFE PULLED FROM WOOD BLOCK]
[intense music]
[GARAGE DOOR SHUTS]
[SUSAN CLEARS HER THROAT]
[ominous music]
Which one do I give her?
[SUSAN COUGHING]
[intense, driving music]
[GRANT GRUNTS]
[BAT WHOOSHES]
[GRANT AND THEO GRUNTING]
[GRANT SLAPS BAT AWAY]
[KNIFE SWOOSHES THROUGH AIR]
GRANT: [GRUNTS] Hyah!!
[SUSAN COUGHING FIT]
[SUSAN GASPS FOR AIR]
[SUSAN TYPING]
[KNIFE SWOOSHES]
[HEAVY BREATHING]
[GRUNTING]
THEO: Gah!
[BAT CLATTERS TO FLOOR]
GRANT: Aarrrrgggghhhh!!!
[THUD AGAINST GLASS DOOR]
[GRUNTING]
[BAM!]
[GRANT GASPS IN PAIN]
[unnerving music]
No more excuses.
[THERMOMETER BUZZES]
[THEO COUGHS]
[CELL PHONE BUZZES]
[THEO COUGHS]
[THEO COUGHS]
[COUGHING]
[FAINT SOUND OF HELICOPTER]
[HELICOPTER GETTING LOUDER]
[COUGHING]
[HELICOPTER GROWING FAINTER]
[COUGHING]
[dreamlike music]
[COUGHING]
[HEAVY BREATHING]
[music intensifies]
[COUGHING]
[COUGHING]
[COUGHING]
[WEAK GRUNTS]
[SHALLOW BREATHING]
[PHONE CLATTERS TO FLOOR]
[THEO STARTLES AWAKE]
[ominous music]
[CREATURE SOUNDS]
[TAP, TAP, TAP]
GRANT: Tap, tap, tap, Theo.
[CREATURE ROAR]
Come on.
Let's get you... [CREATURE ROARS]
[GRUNTS]
[MANNEQUIN BASE CLANGS AGAINST WALL]
[BAT CLATTERS TO FLOOR]
[DOOR SQUEALS SHUT]
[CREATURES ROAR]
[CREATURES ROAR]
[GRUNTING]
[FIGHTING TO CLOSE DOOR]
[GRUNTS]
[HEAVY, PANICKED BREATHING]
[CREATURES ROARING]
[GASPING FOR AIR]
[DOOR HANDLE JIGGLING]
[CREATURES ROARING]
[music intensifying]
[ALL SOUNDS CRESCENDO]
[SILENCE]
You don't look so good.
[SMACKS LIPS]
[THERMOMETER BUZZES]
[CLICKS PEN]
You scared me.
I didn't think I'd see you again.
I think this might be the one.
My CBC's getting back to normal.
My fever's come down...
The same thing happened to Nate.
Doesn't mean anything.
Are they gone?
You wish.
What the hell's happening?
If you want the truth, then what you don't know
is more important than what you know.
St... stop with the goddamn riddles, Grant.
[SIGHS]
Then what don't I know?
SUSAN: None of this matters anymore.
If we can get this to your friend at the CDC, maybe...
The CDC is gone.
It's too late to help anyone.
There's no one left.
We didn't have enough time.
I wish...
So do I.
GRANT: Your sister would be so disappointed.
She believed in you.
Believed?
GRANT: Look at you, locked away in your little bubble,
protected from the world.
This isn't where you're supposed to be.
This isn't where they needed you.
You took away our lab, forced us into a corner.
If we hadn't lost so much time in the beginning...
You didn't give a shit about saving time.
You're too busy saving your own ass.
- THEO: That's not... - GRANT: True?
Think hard.
What's in the garage?
GRANT: You've let down so many people.
I got lucky.
Always having you in my corner.
Even if you do suck at poker.
[SUSAN AND THEO SHARE A LAUGH]
Susan, I...
[FRANTICALLY TAPS KEYBOARD]
I was scared.
GRANT: You're scared.
You're sad. You're broken.
But you're not the only one.
GRANT V.O.: You're also arrogant,
a selfish, pathetic fool
sitting around wasting your life,
wasting other people's lives.
Ring! Come on...
GRANT V.O.: You've lost a lot of people that you love.
But you're not the only one.
You needed my help.
GRANT: And you need to leave.
Those things are still out there.
They're not what's wrong with you.
They're just... symptoms.
What?
GRANT: You know.
GRANT V.O.: You've always known.
Theo, you need to take your shot.
I'm not... I'm not taking treatments. You are.
Am I?
[GRANT SCOFFS]
[music crescendos]
[music fades]
[SYRINGE CAP HITS FLOOR]
[FOOTSTEPS ECHO]
GRANT: Need a hand?
GRANT: Theo... Theo!
GRANT: You don't belong here.
You're not the only one left in this world.
GRANT: You're not only one.
GRANT: You're not only one.
GRANT: You need to leave.
There are people out there who need your help.
GRANT: Get out of the house.
GRANT: They need your help.
So get off your ass and do something about it.
THEO: Gah!
GRANT: Do something.
GRANT: You're not the only one.
GRANT: Theo!
GRANT: There are people out there.
GRANT: Do something.
GRANT: You need to leave.
GRANT: They need your help.
GRANT: You're not the only one.
You're not the only one.
[THEO BREATHING HEAVILY]
[GENERATOR HUMMING]
ZOE: I have to stay,
and you're the one who can get out there and help.
THEO: I can't leave.
ZOE: Well, no, not right now.
But eventually you're gonna have to.
THEO: If anything happens to you...
Ugh, God, you're more overbearing than Mom was.
I'm not going anywhere.
You got that?
I got it.
These people need me.
THEO [present]: Even if it means you get sick?
THEO [past]: Even if it means you get sick?
Yes. Yes, it doesn't matter.
I have a responsibility to help, just like you do.
I'm...
THEO [past]: I'm afraid I won't be able to.
I'm ready.
THEO [past]: What if we never find the answer?
Believe me, I'm... I'm... I'm scared too.
You're not the only one.
[TRIMMING FINGERNAILS]
ZOE V.O.: But you can't back down
from something this important just because you're scared.
Trust in the science.
There's an answer.
You just have to find it and share it with the world.
We can't let our fears control us.
We can't let it stop us from doing the right thing.
We can't just give up
and let it all fall apart around us.
THEO: Thank you.
ZOE V.O.: We have to do it because it needs to be done.
The worst thing we can do is not try.
No, that's... that's... that other part is just in my head.
Well, then again, how much of this movie isn't?
[BRIAN LAUGHS]
