The real princess arrived this morning. Then what happens to Princess Selina?

Your highness, the king is waiting.

I know.

That face of yours really is beautiful.

Remove your hand.

Sorry.

A noble lady?

And you are what? A stable boy?

Not a boy.

You were close enough to notice.

Insolent. You ruined my dress!

You're welcome.

Your Majesty, she's here.

Father, this is her?

Yes.

Leah is our daughter by blood.

Eighteen years ago, Zelina was brought into this palace by mistake and raised

as our princess.

No one outside this room can know the truth.

The kingdom will be told I gave birth to twin daughters.

From today on, you are sisters.

In seven days, Lyra will be formally presented to the court. You will prepare

her. Me?

No one knows court etiquette better than you.

So she teaches me everything.

Don't flatter yourself.

From today on, you will dine together, attend official occasions together, and

share the same apartments.

Live together?

Now that sounds useful.

The court must believe your sisters.

You need to know each other well enough to make that believable.

As you command.

Looks like you're stuck with me.

Sister.

Looks like you're stuck with me.

Sister.

There will be rules.

Already?

Don't touch my belongings.

Don't enter my dressing room. And keep that knife away from me.

The knife saved your life.

And ruined my dress.

Not there Not there either is there

anywhere in this room I'm allowed to exist there

What

happened a knife

Someone stabbed you?

A long time ago.

You say that like it's normal.

Where I grew up, it was.

Wait!

Does it still hurt?

Not anymore.

Good.

Do you always sleep with a knife?

Always.

You're in the royal palace now.

I know.

Good night, Selina.

Good night,

Leah.

Good night, Leah.

Today, you learn the court dance.

I can dance.

What you learned in taverns doesn't count.

Come here.

Your other hand goes on my waist.

It's a dance, Leah.

Then teach me.

One, two, three, turn.

Left.

You're doing this on purpose.

Why would I do that?

Because every time you're wrong, I have to correct you.

Then I should probably make more mistakes.

Again.

You knew the steps.

I do now.

After three tries, I learn fast.

When I pay attention.

Again.

I'm leading.

Not anymore.

Too close.

Better?

The song isn't over.

Lesson over?

For today.

You're a good teacher.

He's scared.

You're making it worse.

There you are.

Thank you, your highness.

Next time don't fight a frightened animal.

He made a mistake, your highness.

Then teach him.

Don't punish him for not knowing.

Not bad.

The horse?

You. Do I know you?

Evelyn.

Leah.

Why did you run from me?

I didn't.

Liar.

Did you think I was gonna kiss you? Don't be ridiculous.

Then look at me.

Do you want me to kiss you?

Selena? Leah?

Selena?

Leah?

Selena?

Can I have you?

You said my name.

I did not. You did.

Go back to sleep.

Was I in your dream?

Relax, I'm teasing.

Get some sleep.

The banquet's tomorrow night, and apparently we have a lot to do before

then.

The banquet's tomorrow night, and apparently we have a lot to do before

then.

Shoulders, 39.

That one, Your Highness, that's a bracelet.

Face forward.

Your Highness, could you hold this?

You all right?

Perfectly.

Your Highness, these gowns were specially made by the tailor to Princess

Leia's measurements.

Please choose one.

This one?

No.

Then this one?

No.

You haven't even looked at it. It has a skirt.

You're a princess.

I'm aware.

Then you need to look like one tonight That doesn't mean I have to become you

Leah You

don't

have to dress like me to look like a princess I think so too

Eighteen years ago, Queen Helena gave birth to twin daughters.

For her protection, one of our daughters was raised away from court. Tonight, she

returns to her family and takes her rightful place in the royal house of

Valerian.

Their royal highnesses, Princess Selina and Princess Leia.

Twins? Your Highnesses, forgive me.

Eighteen years is a long time.

Long enough to make people wonder.

You don't resemble your sister.

We're twins, Chancellor, not mirrors.

Besides, my father knows who his daughter is.

Of course, Princess Selina, on the other hand, is everything this court expects

of a royal daughter.

Grace.

Discipline. Education.

Some things, unfortunately, cannot be inherited through blood.

Enough! Leah has been in this palace for seven days, and she already has

something many people here never learned in a lifetime.

And what would that be?

The courage to be herself.

Careful, your highness.

A crown is a fragile thing.

Especially when it was never meant to be yours.

Enjoy the evening, princesses.

Excuse me.

Excuse me.

Selina, go back inside.

Thank you for what you said in there.

Don't Minderstand.

I spent seven days teaching you.

I wasn't going to let him more insult my work.

Of course.

What's that supposed to mean?

Nothing.

You're just very good at making kindness sound like an insult.

Did he make you cry?

I don't cry.

All right.

Then I didn't see anything.

He wasn't wrong.

I spent 18 years learning how to stand, how to move, how to smile, how to bow.

Every day, someone was teaching me how to be worthy of that crown.

And then you came back.

And suddenly I learned none of it was ever mine.

I don't want your crown.

You don't have to want it. You were born with everything I've spent my whole life

trying to deserve.

You think I look at you and see a stolen crown?

That's not what I see.

Then what do you see?

The first woman I couldn't stop looking at.

Leah. I liked you before I knew your name.

Before anyone told me I was supposed to call you sister.

This way, my lord.

We can't do this.

Everyone in there believes you're my sister.

But I'm not. We need to maintain some distance between us.

If that's what you want.

You tell me to stop, I stop.

Please keep your distance from me!

Tomorrow, you will both attend the Royal Court Academy.

Both of us? You need the education expected of a royal.

Selina will continue her studies beside you.

As you command.

You need the education expected of a royal Selina will continue her studies

beside you As you command

There was a step.

There was also ground.

Please keep your distance from me!

Why did the Northern Rebellion fail despite having the larger army?

Because soldiers can't eat swords.

Their supply road was cut.

Two weeks later, they were fighting hungry.

Crude, but correct.

You know how to fix it?

I've fixed worse

Where did you learn that?

Where I grew up. If something broke, you fixed it or went without.

Your Highness.

Carry on.

Interesting. Interesting.

Your Highness.

Chancellor. Princess Leia seems remarkably popular at the Academy.

Is that a problem?

Not at all. People enjoy novelty.

Especially a lost princess returned from nowhere.

Choose your words carefully.

Forgive me.

I merely wonder how quickly court affection changes.

Eighteen years of being the only princess, and now the court suddenly has

two.

People have short memories, Your Highness.

They're always fascinated by what is new.

Leah hasn't taken anything from me.

Not yet.

We're done here.

Not yet.

We're done here.

Not bad, your highness.

Neither are you. I never thought you were a princess when we first met.

Exactly.

You really don't act like one.

Best compliment I've had all week.

Princess Selina.

Lady Evelyn.

Father expects us back before supper.

It's barely afternoon.

Then you have plenty of time not to be late.

Your sister doesn't like me.

She barely likes me.

Ride with me tomorrow?

Sure. Not yet.

We're done here.

You hurt.

I'm fine.

Good.

This didn't break on its own.

This didn't break on its own.

Someone filed it down.

I noticed.

Then tell the king.

And tell him what?

That someone doesn't like me.

That's a long list.

Someone tried to drop a beam on your head!

I'll tell him when I know who.

Going to the library?

Yes.

Have fun.

Was yesterday you're doing

I'm afraid I don't know what you mean

the beam at the Academy an unfortunate accident Stay away from Leah

You're very protective of your sister She is my

family Family can be complicated when crowns are involved if anything happens

to her again I will come to you first.

Who were you talking to?

Selina?

What do you know?

There used to be only one princess in this palace.

I can't prove the beam was his doing.

Just be careful.

You're worried about me.

Don't make this into something it isn't.

All right.

Do you ever sit still? I'm sitting now.

I like you, Lita.

I'd like a chance, if you'll give me one.

I'd like a chance, if you'll give me one.

Lynn, I'm sorry.

My heart already belongs to someone.

Anyone I know?

That's a dangerous question.

I asked.

You answered. That's fair.

I don't want to lead you on.

Then don't.

Friends?

Friends.

You asked to see me.

They were never twin princesses.

I was in this palace the night Leia was born. One child was born that night.

Not two.

Careful, Chancellor.

You can threaten me if it makes you feel better.

But you and I both know the truth.

You are not the king's daughter.

What do you want?

You are not the king's daughter.

What do you want?

Tomorrow, Lear will choose a horse.

Make sure she chooses this one. Why?

You don't need to know.

I won't help you hurt her.

Then don't.

And tomorrow morning I'll tell the court there was only one princess born 18

years ago.

They'll ask why the king lied.

They'll ask who you really are.

And they'll ask whether Leah's return is another royal lie.

One horse, Selina.

Or the truth.

One horse.

He's beautiful.

What do you think?

Selena?

Take him.

I was hoping you'd say that.

I'm racing too.

Your Highness!

Since when do you race?

Since today.

Try to keep up.

Leah.

Selina, look at me.

Leah.

You're hurt.

I'm fine.

You're bleeding!

Why did you do that?

And when the horse bolted, you nearly got yourself killed.

So did you.

That's not the point!

You threw yourself off a horse for me!

What the hell were you thinking?

I wasn't thinking.

I saw you falling.

And then, suddenly, nothing else mattered anymore. The royal family.

My identity.

Aldric's threats.

None of it mattered.

You could have died.

You would have survived.

You'd still have Evelyn.

What?

Forget it.

You saw her talking to me.

You saw her confess. It doesn't matter. Apparently it does.

Don't.

Don't I said no I Told her my heart already belonged

to someone else

It

still does so tell me the truth why did you risk your life for me?

Because I was terrified

I thought I'd just sent you to your death.

And all I could think was... I can't lose you.

I can't lose you.

I can't. I don't know what to do anymore.

Then we find out what happened.

Together.

You said this was important.

It is.

And what you hear stays in this room.

All right. The story about Leah and me being twins isn't true.

What?

What?

I wasn't born to the king and queen Leah was.

Eighteen years ago, I disappeared from the palace.

Another baby was raised in my place.

Everyone called it a mistake.

We don't believe that anymore. Because of the race and the beam.

Both happened after I returned.

The Chancellor was in charge of palace security the night I was born, and he

remembers there being no twins.

You think he knows what happened? We think he may be part of it.

What do you need from me?

That's it?

No questions?

Someone tried to kill my friend twice.

Questions can wait.

Questions can wait.

My grandfather served on the Privy Council.

House Hartfield keeps copies of old council correspondence.

If palace records were altered, ours may not have been.

That's why I like you.

Careful.

You already broke my heart once.

Focus.

Your birthday.

Where's the nursery report?

Someone removed it.

The day after you were born.

The day after you were born.

I found something.

He controlled the guards.

He controlled the records.

But this still doesn't prove he switched us.

Then we find someone who was inside the nursery.

Start with her.

Start with her.

If I survive this investigation, I never want to see another Ledger.

Good news. There's twelve more.

She died in the fire.

Dead women don't collect pensions.

Someone wanted the palace to believe she was dead.

We go to the Abbey.

If the Chancellor really is involved, leaving the palace together will be

noticed. Tomorrow the Academy has a visit to St. Aurelia's Chapel.

North Abbey is less than half a day's ride beyond it.

North Abbey is less than half a day's ride beyond it.

You're getting good at breaking rules.

I'm learning from a bad influence.

Why did that sound strangely personal?

It wasn't.

It wasn't.

Margaret Bell, no.

The payments came here for years.

Sister Miriam died years ago.

But before she died, she left something with the abbess.

Sister Miriam left this before she died.

The fire was no accident.

They came for the queen's child.

I was ordered to make sure the princess did not survive that night.

I disobeyed. I carried her through the servants' gate and gave her to people

leaving the capital.

For eighteen years, I searched for proof that she survived.

When I finally found her, I wrote to the queen.

This explains why the Queen suddenly found me 18 years later.

Do you recognize this?

I've seen that eagle on official documents.

Whose?

The Deputy Royal Chancellor's office.

Did Sister Miriam ever say where she got this? Only that it came from the Night

of the Fire.

Then we prove whose it was.

Then we prove whose it was.

It's the same mark.

It links Margaret to his office, not yet to him personally.

Then we keep going.

You were born on May 15th.

Selina, he knew I existed before you were born.

You weren't chosen after the fire.

You were ready before it happened.

Then the exchange was planned before Lyre was even born.

He's alive Then we find him

Who are you

Who are you

Your

highness, my name is Leah

I was born in the Royal Palace on May 15th, year 742.

You guarded the West Wing that night.

Come in.

This was issued before the fire.

That's why I kept it.

Why?

Because I disobeyed it.

Because I disobeyed it.

What happened that night?

We were ordered away from the West Wing. No explanation.

Then I saw smoke.

Margaret Bell.

The royal midwife.

She was covered in blood and ash.

She begged me to open the servant's gate.

What was she carrying?

A newborn girl.

That was me.

Then you're the child I let out that night.

Did Margaret say anything?

She said, tell the Queen her daughter is alive.

Did you tell her?

I tried.

Captain Hart died three months later.

I never knew if he reached the Queen.

Take it.

I kept it because one day I thought someone might ask.

Thank you.

I'm glad you survived, Your Highness.

I'm glad you survived, Your Highness.

The other infant was carried into the Royal Wondery by Lady Beatrix Hole.

She was one of Mother's Ladies of the Bedchamber.

She's alive.

Mother, did you trust her?

She was with me throughout the pregnancy.

Bring Lady Ashcroft to the palace.

Quietly.

Bring Lady Ashcroft to the palace.

Quietly.

Margaret survived.

Long enough to tell us what you did.

Who ordered you to bring another child

into my nursery?

The Deputy Royal Chancellor.

Name him.

The Deputy Royal Chancellor.

Name him.

Alden Crone.

Why?

He came to me before the princess was born.

He said there would be a fire.

The West Wing guards would be removed.

All I had to do was bring another child into the nursery.

Me.

And what was supposed to happen to me?

Margaret was ordered to make sure the Queen's child never left the

West Wing alive.

And what was supposed to happen to me?

Margaret was ordered...

To make sure the Queen's child never left the West Wing alive.

Why choose me?

Because you had no family.

No name.

No one who would come looking.

He said one day the child in that cradle would inherit the crown.

He wasn't replacing a princess.

He was creating a queen he could control.

Write everything down.

He was creating a queen he could control.

Write everything down.

Sworn statement of Bethrys Ashcomb. I testify that Aldrich Crowan ordered the

exchange of the royal infant on 15 May, year 742.

Your father needs to see this.

Bring him here quietly

It's

over Is it?

It's over

Is it?

You tried to murder my daughter twice!

Recently, yes.

And 18 years ago.

You were never supposed to survive.

You chose me before she was even born.

I gave you everything.

A name.

A family.

A palace.

A crown that would have been yours.

You never cared about me.

You cared about what I represented.

A princess.

A crown.

A place in this kingdom.

You saw me as a way to hold on to your power.

Strip him of office.

Detain him for treason and attempted regicide.

Then I suggest you think carefully before giving me a public trial Because

if I speak publicly so will the truth

If I

speak

publicly so will the truth

For now, the evidence remains sealed.

Why?

Because proving what he did, that the story we told the kingdom was a lie.

The kingdom believes you are twins.

There's something else you should know.

We don't want to be just sisters.

Is that what you want?

Yes. The entire kingdom believes you are sisters!

We aren't.

That will not matter if you're discovered before the truth is known.

If I am tried before the kingdom, I will tell the kingdom who Princess Selina

truly is.

He's still using you.

Because he thinks I'm still afraid.

Then take the secret away from him.

Tell the truth.

All of it.

Then take the secret away from him.

Tell the truth.

All of it.

Once this is read, there is no taking it back.

I know.

They will know we lied when Leah returned.

Then we tell them that too.

And I renounce my claim to the crown.

Selina!

Not you.

Never you.

Royal Proclamation on 15 May, year 742.

The biological daughter of their majesties was unlawfully removed from

the royal palace.

Another newborn child was deliberately placed in the royal versary.

Princess Leah is the biological daughter of their majesties and lawful first heir

to the crown.

Princess Selina bears no blood relation to Princess Leah.

Princess Selina bears no blood relation to Princess Leia.

When Laia returned, we concealed the truth in the name of stability.

That decision was ours.

Selina bears no blame for it. Royal decree.

Renunciation of royal status.

Princess Selina of Valyria has voluntarily renounced her royal title

and succession rights.

From this day forward, she shall no longer hold the title of princess, nor

any claim to the throne.

Try not to start another royal scandal.

No promises.

Of course.

Try not to start another royal scandal.

No promises.

Of course.

The entire court saw that.

That was the idea.

Future Queen of Valeria.

You should learn to behave.

I wore the badge.

I stood still for almost an hour.

I've done enough.

You're impossible.

And yet you chose me.

Yes.
