TARZAN: The jungle.
Here I was born.
And here my parents died when I was but an infant.
I would've soon perished, too,
had I not been found by a kindly she-ape named Kala
who adopted me as her own
and taught me the ways of the wild.
I learned quickly and grew stronger each day.
And now, I share the friendship and trust of all jungle animals.
The jungle is filled with beauty
and danger.
And lost cities filled with good and evil.
This is my domain
and I protect those who come here
for if am Tarzan,
Lord of the Jungle.
(YELLS JUNGLE CRY)
(SNORING)
(DISTANT BELLOWING)
BOY: Help! Somebody help me!
(RHINO BELLOWING)
(SCREAMS)
Tand, Buto! No! Unk, unk!
Who are you?
I am Tarzan of the Apes.
Tarzan?
Well, then you know of my sister, Thea.
Thea. Yes, from Athne, the City of Ivory.
-Who are you? -Orando, Thea's brother.
I have left home and shall not return until I have proven myself a man.
How old are you, Orando?
I am already 13 summers old.
Yes, but not yet a man,
and the jungle is no place for a city boy.
Come, I will take you back to Athne.
(PLAYING FANFARE)
(ROARS)
(KNOCKING AT DOOR)
Enter.
What news do the warriors bring of Tarzan?
We have been told of the jungle where he lives and--
Then what are you waiting for? Bring him to me.
But, Your Majesty, my men have traveled great distances.
They need a rest.
You let Tarzan escape once before, Tomos.
Now I command you to return him to me
or you will pay dearly.
As you wish, my queen. We will leave immediately.
Do not fail, Tomos.
You have not escaped me yet, Tarzan of the Apes, not yet.
Orando! Wake up. 1 am going to hunt us some breakfast.
Wait here until I return.
-You will be safe with Tantor. -ORANDO: ! will stay.
Already there are signs you are becoming a man.
(TRUMPETS)
I smell the spoor of many men, Nkima, and they drive lion-drawn chariots!
-They come this way! -(TANTOR TRUMPETING)
Tantor! Something is wrong!
Come, Nkima!
The boy is gone!
Which way, Tantor?
(TRUMPETS)
Good, Tantor. Good!
(LIONS GROWLING)
Who are you, boy?
I am not a boy, I am a man!
Yes, I can see that by the way you are trembling.
(TOMOS CHUCKLES)
Now who are you, boy?
You wear the clothing of an Athnean!
I am Orando but I am no longer an Athnean!
I have run away.
Who are you?
I am Tomos from Zandor.
Zandor?
What better place to prove yourself a man, Athnean?
(CHUCKLING)
Take him!
Hey, what are you going to do with me?
You are an enemy and will be treated as such.
But I told you, I am no longer an Athnean!
I am not your enemy!
Silence, boy!
We are looking for a man called Tarzan of the Apes.
-Do you know of him? - I was with him this morning.
He was taking me back to Athne, so I escaped when he went to hunt.
Where?
We made camp by a river not far from here.
-Is this the truth, boy? -I do not lie.
Tarzan is a friend of my sister, Thea.
Tomos? What is he doing in my jungle?
It is Tarzan!
So, we meet again, Tarzan of the Apes!
An unexpected pleasure, Tomos.
You will not find the plans I have for you so amusing, Tarzan.
And what are those plans, may I ask?
You will see in due time.
I don't want to spoil the surprise.
What of the boy?
He is Athnean and will be taken to Zandor as our prisoner.
Take him!
I see you are as brave as ever, Tomos.
I only wish Queen Nemone could see you now, Tarzan of the Apes.
Perhaps, then she would think less of you.
Farewell, Tarzan.
I leave you to the wild beasts of the jungle!
Give my regards to the Queen!
(GROANS)
(GIBBERING)
Nkima, Tarzan needs help.
Go find Ga-yat, the great Mangani, tell him to come here.
(GIBBERING)
Yes, Ga-yat, the great Mangani! Unk, unk!
Go swiftly, little Nkima. Go swiftly.
(SCREECHING)
(GIBBERING)
(GRUNTING)
Hista the snake approaches looking for a meal.
(HISSING)
(TARZAN GROANING)
You must be hungry, Hista, to travel such a great distance for a meal.
(GROWLS)
Little Nkima, I am grateful.
Tu, Ga-yat! Tu!
Tarzan yo a Ga-yat. You are my friend.
Tarzan, yo!
After water and rest, Nkima,
we shall journey to the City of Gold and find Orando.
There it is, Nkima. Zandor, the City of Gold.
And somewhere beneath those glittering domes we'll find Orando.
(TARZAN LAUGHING)
Well, brave little Nkima,
perhaps you should wait here and sleep while I locate Orando.
TOMOS: And remember what will happen if you ever cross me, boy.
I... I'll remember.
(FANFARE PLAYS)
(ROARS)
Where is Tarzan?
Tarzan of the Apes is no longer, my queen.
My instructions were to return him to Zandor, Tomos.
Alive!
It was unavoidable, Your Majesty.
We were on our way back with Tarzan as our prisoner
when he continually insulted you.
It was something I could not tolerate,
and challenged him to a gladiatorial battle,
of which I emerged the victor.
You defeated Tarzan of the Apes?
1 did it for you, my queen.
I find that difficult to believe, Tomos,
for I have never seen such a man as Tarzan.
For your sake, Tomos, I hope you do not lie.
It is the truth, my queen.
Now, what will you have done with the young Athnean?
I will consider that later.
-Leave me now. -Yes, my queen.
The only man I ever respected is gone, Belthar.
(SOBBING)
Do not make a sound, my large friend.
Tarzan, it is I, Phobeg!
Phobeg!
I knew it must be you, no other can take me so easily.
-But I have heard reports that you were- -Dead?
Yes. Tomos has been boasting.
But why have you returned to Zandor, Tarzan?
Tomos took a young friend of mine prisoner.
I have come to free him.
I have seen the boy.
-He is-- -Men approach.
Where is the boy being held?
On the upper floor of the Queen's palace.
Then I must go now and find him.
It is heavily guarded. You cannot get in.
1 will find a way.
Then I will do what I can to help, my friend.
I am grateful, Phobeg.
A stranger has been seen prowling around the palace grounds.
Have a look, I'll watch your posts!
(GROWLS)
(ROARS)
Silence, Belthar. Guard!
Yes, Your Majesty?
Belthar has sensed something outside.
Have the grounds checked thoroughly.
Yes, Your Majesty.
-Tar-- -Shh.
Are there guards outside?
Come, we must move swiftly.
Tarzan! In the prisoner's room!
Sound the alarm!
-Tarzan is here? -TRUMPETS BLOWING)
Guard, send for Tomos immediately!
Halt! Halt!
Halt! Halt!
QUEEN: I can see by your face that you have heard of Tarzan's arrival!
(STAMMERING) Your Majesty, I can explain this, it's--
Silence!
I have heard enough of your lies!
My queen, oh, my queen, I beg of you.
Tarzan of the Apes is very much alive,
and you are going to pay for your mistake.
Oh, please, Your Majesty, 1 did it for you.
Guards, take him to the dungeon!
ORANDO: Oh, it's a dead end, Tarzan!
That window is our only chance!
What shall we do, Tarzan?
Nothing at the moment.
There will be another time to make good our escape
and a little insurance won't hurt.
(YELLS JUNGLE CRY)
ORANDO: You were right, Tarzan, I'm not a man yet
and I'm sorry for causing all this trouble.
I should have never left home.
By realizing your mistakes, Orando,
you have already traveled along way down the road to becoming a man.
On your feet, prisoner!
The Queen has a wicked plan for you, my friend,
but I will do what I can to help.
I am grateful, Phobeg.
I must treat you as a prisoner in front of the other guards.
I understand.
PHOBEG: Move, prisoner!
(DOOR CLOSES)
QUEEN: Where are the prisoners?
They come now, my queen.
Good morning, Nemone.
Ideal weather for hunting, don't you think?
Tarzan of the Apes,
you have spurned my offers of wealth and power
for reasons I cannot understand.
But I am prepared to give you another chance.
I am not interested in your offers, Nemone.
That is the last humiliation I can tolerate from you!
Bring the hunting lions to scent the quarry!
(ROARING)
(TRUMPETING)
(PLAYING FANFARE)
The prisoners shall move down the lane of warriors,
and when you have reached the golden banner,
the keepers shall release the lions.
Let the hunt begin!
(GONG RINGS)
(ROARS)
Phobeg, I will see you rot in the dungeon for this!
(DISTANT TRUMPETING)
What is that?
(ELEPHANTS TRUMPETING)
Yo, Belthar.
Unk rand holden, Belthar.
Well, little Nkima, once again you have come to my rescue.
I have never met a man like you, Tarzan of the Apes.
You have broken the spirit that bound me to Belthar.
I am hopeful you will change your ways, Nemone,
and earn the respect and friendship of your people rather than their fear.
I can change my ways, Tarzan, if you would remain by my side.
That is something that must come from you, Nemone.
I cannot help.
We will meet again, Tarzan of the Apes.
It is a good sign, Tarzan,
for I have never heard the Queen speak in such a way.
Change takes time, Phobeg, but perhaps this is a beginning.
