The Classic of Mountains and Seas - Legend of the Scarlet Shadow

Episode 5

Timing & Subtitles brought to you by the Dancing Fingers @ Viki

Lord Shangguan,

if you ever became the Emperor of the Green Hills State,

I hope that you will never treat us, Dong Ling, as enemies.

High Priest, what are you doing?

She is Jiu Li's Mysterious Lady.

Is that so? Look.

What is meaning of this?

I am only testing the Mysterious Lady's spirit power.

High Priest, if you do this,

it may hurt Su Mo.

How could that happen? Aren't you still here, Young Lord Jin?

Su Mo, he is Jiu Li's High Priest.

Greetings to the High Priest.

The Vermilion Bird Mysterious Lady is the controller of the fire element.

And is able to use one's spirit power to extinguish fire.

High Priest, what must I do, in order to obtain this fire extinguishing power?

These next few days, we shall offers sacrifices to the gods.

With the technique of controlling water and fire,

one can light the fire within the bathing water.

Fire within the bathing water?

Sacrificial offerings are important ceremonial traditional things for Jiu Li every year.

The one heading the ceremony must know the gods in the Heavens, the underground beings, and the human ghosts.

Since time immemorial, who will expound the wisdom of ancient savages?

When Heaven and Earth have not formed yet, where did they come from?

Unable to discern brightness from darkness (good from evil) leading to chaos, who is able to get to the reason behind these?

In a phenomenon of mistiness, how can one correctly recognize someone?

Brother Shangguan, this-

This is our Jiu Li's most important

ritual chant in our sacrificial ceremony. The gods will give us an answer.

It's bright in the day, dark in the night. But why is this so?

The merging of Yin and Yang led to the birth of the universe. Which one is the original, which one is from evolution?

Mysterious Lady, you must be clear on your responsibilities.

Then what must I do?

For the Vermilion Bird

to be brought to life, letting it fly in fire,

control water and cause it to have form,

Control fire and cause it to be swift and fierce.

The sacrificial ceremony is Jiu Li's most important event,

there must be no errors.

Mysterious Lady, you must listen carefully to what I say.

High Priest, can you be a little more detailed?

I don't understand what you're saying.

High Priest, the matter of the sacrificial ceremony is big;

we must all not have any shortcomings.

This is the Mysterious Lady's first time in Jiu Li.

She must be tired from the journey. Her body is also exhausted.

Why don't we find another day

to come here so she can listen to High Priest's teachings.

Jiu Li's Offering Ceremony and Jiu Li's Nine Songs

are things that one must not just tread on.

Then we shall leave now.

Brother Shangguan, just what should I do?

Why? Are you scared?

It's not that I'm scared. I'm just stupid.

I completely didn't understand what High Priest was saying.

Su Mo, you have already tried your best.

Don't worry. I will help you. Let's take it slow.

No, I can't take it slow.

I have to save Fu'er.

Okay then. Let's start with the flow of the Offering Ceremony, okay?

Fine. Then tell me.

What is the meaning of "Wei Zhu Chue Zhe, Dan Xue Hua Sheng, Jian Huo Qi Fei"?

It means that the Vermilion Bird is the guardian of the south sky.

When it first existed,

it had no fear.

When it saw fire, it flew towards the sky.

It was really grand.

How are your preparations?

It's so difficult.

Brother Shangguan, do you have news about Fu'er?

You've been in the room all day today,

it doesn't seem like you at all.

I have no mood.

I'm just worried about Fu'er.

Even if you are worried,

being sulky in your room for an entire day isn't right.

I promised you, I would find a way to save her.

Right, have you seen the scenery of Jiu Li?

Are you interested?

I don't want to go.

-Let's go. I'll bring you.-Brother Shangguan! You're here!

Princess.

Brother Shangguan, you're back but why didn't you take time to see me?

Because I just got back,

so I had a lot of things to do so I couldn't find time.

Then why do you have time to see the scenery with her?

It is Miss Su's first time in Jiu Li,

bringing her around is what I should do.

True, she is the Mysterious Lady,

bringing her to see the scenery is just a chore!

Then I will leave first.

-I also want to go.-Princess I don't think this is a good idea.

His Majesty will definitely not agree.

It's fine. I already told my father about this.

He said as long as I'm with you, it's fine. Let's go!

Shadow puppets! Come look!

Come take a look!

Come and see!

Which one do you like?

I like this one.

I like this, too. I want it.

Then I'll take this one.

I also want this. This is for Brother Shangguan.

I want this.

Brother Shangguan, you see, there's a little turtle on this!

-Really? -Give it to me! Where is it?

Where? Where's the turtle?

Look at it against the sun. Try it.

Go. Let's go!

Where's the turtle?

Where are they?

I can't see! Help me!

Princess!

It's finally more peaceful.

But the Princess's eyes...

Who asked her to stare at the sun for so long.

Master, look!

Isn't that Miss Su?

I can tell the Princess really likes you.

But... I don't like her.

You don't even like the Princess? Then what (kind of girls) do you like?

Su Mo.

When did you buy this? Why didn't I realize it?

I really like this!

Sorry for intruding.

Cold-Face Ghost?

Let's go.

General, I have come late.

Don't call me General.

I'm no longer Dong Ling's general.

Fu'er, let's quickly go.

Don't be scared. They are the Azure Dragon star mansions.

They are here to protect you. They won't harm you.

Shuang'er, bring Miss Fu'er to leave first.

Yu Yang and I will stay to face them.

Yes.

Yao Li!

General!

When you need me, scream for Yao Li.

He will send me a message.

-I obey!-Go.

Let's go.

Hurry!

How are things going on at Jiu Li?

We have already prepared!

I saw a ghost. Why do I always think of him?

This wild brat! Let me tell you,

don't try to snatch away my Brother Shangguan!

Why are you creating such a fuss.

Don't pretend to not understand!

Who's pretending? You are the one who isn't making herself clear.

You! You dare hide?!

Of course! Do you think I'm stupid? Why would I let you hit me?

You have some guts!

Come! Drag this wild brat out!

What happened?

Brother Shangguan, she bullied me!

Yeah, I should be standing here so you can hit me.

She changed her face faster than flipping books.

Brother Shangguan...

Princess, why are you in the Mysterious Lady's room?

I... I...

If there is nothing, then why don't you return back and rest.

Don't let me worry.

Come! Send the Princess back!

I don't want them! I want Brother Shangguan to send me.

I still have things to discuss with the Mysterious Lady. Princess, you should go back.

Stinky brat! I'll let you off

today thanks to Brother Shangguan.

Are you okay? What did she do?

I can still tolerate her.

I'm just worried about tomorrows sacrificial ceremony.

The High Priest has said so much,

but I only remember half of it.

If something goes wrong, I...

Are you worried about this?

Tomorrow there will be so many people there! What if-

Don't worry. I'm here.

I'll always accompany you.

You said you had things to talk to me about? What is it?

We received some news.

We have already located Fu'er.

Really?

He said Fu'er has already returned to Peach Blossom Hollow.

Returned? By herself?

I don't think so... She was brought back by Liu Ruo Shuang.

Liu Ruo Shuang?

She's Baili Han's person!

I'm getting more and more muddled.

Didn't Baili Han spend so much effort to get Fu'er to stay in Dong Ling?

He won't let her go so easily.

I'm not too clear about this either.

Okay, look at you. Stop wrinkling your forehead.

If you continue, you still won't find out what happened.

Why don't you wait till after the ceremony? I'll bring you back to Peach Blossom Hollow.

Then you can see Miss Fu'er, and you can ask her about it.

Brother Shangguan!

Why are you so good to me?

When I was young, my mother told me

she said the mark of the Vermilion Bird is the highest honor.

She said this mark will let me meet

a girl I will protect with my entire being and life.

So since then I always thought

the person I must protect, I wondered what she would look like.

So it means... tomorrow at the sacrificial ceremony,

the person might be me?

I will be very happy if the person is you.

Have a rest.

Young Master, I have already found out.

Nearby, there is no Baili Han.

I got it. After paying our respects tomorrow,

we shall leave here.

Then shall we go see Miss Su Mo again?

No need. She has Shangguan Jin.

Young Master.

- What do you want to say? -I think

that Miss Su is very important to you, too.

The people who I thought were important,

have never had any good endings.

Let's go.

Brother Shangguan, this dress seems too big. Do I look strange?

You look good.

-But...-Come.

Later, I'll help you light up the fire within the bathing water.

When the time comes, you just need to stand there.

Your spiritual energy will mix with the Vermilion Bird's.

You don't have to worry about the rest.

What if... What if I'm not the Mysterious Lady?

Trust me. You are.

High Priest, let's begin.

Mysterious Lady, today is the day you and the Vermilion Bird

share your energies.

Miss Su looks really

pretty in those clothes.

Mysterious Lady, give me your hand.

This...is this the fire within the bathing water?

Water is the essence of all life. The energy of everything.

Mysterious Lady, go make a connection to the spirit of the Vermilion Bird.

Trust me.

Shuangguan Jin begs High Priest to

help the Mysterious Lady find her spirtual energy.

Mysterious Lady, are you unwell?

No. Can I try again?

Water is the essence of all life. The energy of everything.

Mysterious Lady, you can make a connection with the Vermilion Bird's spiritual energy.

Mysterious Lady, use your spiritual energy

to join with that of the Vermilion Bird's.

Why is this happening? Miss Su doesn't have a lot of spiritual energy.

Why is there such a huge amount of strength?

Shangguan Jin! What are you doing!

Have I... Have I done something wrong?

Singing Snake?

-Demon! Capture her!-I'm not a demon!

Don't harm the Mysterious Lady!

Your Majesty! There is something suspicious about this.

Please let me investigate.

Shangguan Jin, this is the Mysterious Lady you have brought back?

Your Majesty, I will definitely

investigate this thoroughly!

Come! Drag her away!

Brother Shangguan, I'm not a demon!

I'm not a demon!

Brother Shangguan!

Brother Shangguan!

This High Priest...

Hong Tai,

there must be something wrong with this High Priest.

Even though the Mysterious Lady's spiritual energy is unstable,

but when it met with that of the Vermilion Bird's,

it was unheard of.

You have met the girl before.

Why didn't you find anything suspicious?

I previously taught that girl the proper etiquette for Jiu Ge (songs) and Jiu Wen (questions).

But...

But what?

Shangguan Jin said that the Mysterious Lady's body was unwell.

He kept getting in the way.

Then why did Shangguan Jin stop you?

That girl was brought back by Shangguan Jin.

I am untalented but was able to get a cultivation as high as a mountain and

the care and true teachings of elder immortal Di Tai.

Differentiating between human and gods, knowing the reason of fate,

not even half an hour,

I should be able to guess the truth.

After half a day,

whether this person is a human or demon,

her past and present

will be able to be told.

Shangguan Jin only let the Mysterious Lady and I

meet very briefly. I'm just afraid that he knew long ago

that the girl had a suspicious background.

Continue talking!

The Shangguan family is a powerful family of Jiu Li.

The current leader, Shangguan Boyu,

is Jiu Li's head general.

He has all the military power and has much support.

Jiu Li cannot go on without him.

Jiu Li isn't Your Majesty's Jiu Li.

It is the Shangguan family's Jiu Li.

Nonsense!

My king, please think.

If today's matter

didn't fail, then that girl

would have the respect of all of Jiu Li.

Behind that girl is Shangguan Jin.

The Shangguan family and the royal family

are inseparable since time immemorial. If one gets glory, all gets glory.

If one suffering loses, all lose.

I have always treated Shangguan Jin as my own nephew.

The great General Shangguan is the supporting strength of Jiu Li.

I.. gave him much of my trust.

High Priest, your worry for Jiu Li is understandable.

However, don't be too suspicious.

It will cause harm to others.

Your Majesty, what if Mr. Jin

was tricked by that girl?

I would rather believe that the General's family is innocent.

But does Your Majesty really want to keep that unlucky girl?

Your Majesty, the spirit of the Vermilion Bird is angry,

I will go and take a look.

I'll find a way to ease it.

-You can leave.-Yes.

Young Master, that High Priest looks so flustered. Something is definitely wrong.

Hong Tai,

did you smell something odd just now?

It was very faint, but I couldn't tell what scent it was.

What was that?

Young Master, I'll follow him!

Your Majesty, I didn't think things through!

It was my fault! Your Majesty, I think this matter was done too quickly.

The Mysterious Lady was in too much of a rush and her body is unwell, so-

You're still talking on her behalf?

Father, please give me one more chance!

Let me give an answer to the people of Jiu Li!

Is that girl really the Mysterious Lady?

Your Majesty, please believe me!

What I saw was a toll serpent!

Shangguan Jin, do you really intend to use a snake demon to trick the people of the world?

Your Majesty, you must not misunderstand!

Please give me one more chance to prove it to you!

You were just tricked by that demon girl!

Even the High Priest could tell there is something wrong with her.

As a star mansion of the Vermilion Bird,

how could you not have felt anything at all?

You know that Dong Ling is always looking for our weakness!

That demon girl might have been sent by Dong Ling!

Your Majesty, please believe me!

Your Majesty, it was my mistake.

I am willing to take any punishment!

-Your Majesty, this is-!-Be quiet!

Yor Majesty, we will definitely investigate this matter thoroughly.

If she really is a fake, we definitely won't let her off easily.

Please be calm, Your Majesty. I am willing to take responsibility for all the wrongs.

The Vermilion Bird is Jiu Li's guardian beast. You are not to talk like that!

Your Majesty! I am willing to give up the position of head general as punishment!

I want to find the real Mysterious Lady!

Shangguan Jin, I will give you one more chance.

If you fail,

your Shangguan family isn't worthy of being Jiu Li's number one family anymore!

Shang-

The vermilion bird became a mountain chicken.

-How is Brother Shangguan?-What do you think?

He was dragged down by you, the fake Mysterious Lady.

The first time I saw you, I knew you were trouble. Look at things now.

Our Jiu Li and Brother Shangguan were dragged down by you!

-Are you satisfied?-I didn't!

You still say you didn't?

I will give you a chance to make up for your crimes today.

I heard that fresh snake blood is good for excorcising evil spirits.

Since today you angered the great Vermilion Bird,

you can only bring out some sincerity.

Come!

Bleed her! Bleed out all of her snake blood!

-I won't let Brother Shangguan be harmed by her again!-Let go! Let go!

Chi Yu?

You still don't know how to fight back now?

Who are you? Why are you saving this fake Mysterious Lady?

I saw you all bullying her.

I just couldn't stand seeing it.

Who trusts you?

You brat, you are not simple.

You not only tricked my Brother Shangguan,

even now, someone is here to protect you.

Come!

-Capture them!-Yes!

Stop it!

Brother Shangguan! This man is in cahoots with her!

-Chi Yu?-Mr. Jin?

Brother Shangguan, you know him?

I thought you could protect this silly girl.

But since you can't,

then let me protect her.

Everyone leave!

Chi Yu, Mo'er. Come with me.

Brother Shangguan!

Today's matter is suspicious.

I have to take them with me to investigate.

What is there to ask? She's a liar!

-She's a snake demon, a source of trouble!-I'm not!

-You are!-Enough!

No matter what,

I have to take them with me to investigate!

Shangguan Jin, I'm telling my Emperor Father!

I can promise you!

I will definitely investigate this matter well!

Then if she really is a snake demon?

If she is a snake demon, I won't let her off easily.

-Is that good enough?-What if she runs away?

She definitely cannot run away.

Let's go.

Shangguan Jin!

Rest here. No one will bother you here.

-Do you intend to lock me up here?-The princess won't come here.

I still have some things to take care of right now.

Brother Shangguan, I really am not a demon girl.

I know. Get some rest.

Let's talk later.

Timing & Subtitles brought to you by the Dancing Fingers @ Viki

Shangguan Jin.

What is it?

Whether or not she is the Mysterious Lady of the Vermilion Bird,

you and I should know that best.

My mark told me that Su Mo is the Mysterious Lady of the Vermilion Bird.

-But...-Baili Han keeps watching you.

But everyone who took part in the ceremony were all from our clan.

There weren't any strangers.

What if there is someone who is secretly a spy?

That's impossible.

All of those people are trusted in the tribe.

Everyone also has close relationships.

No one would work against their benefits, right?

Baili Han shouldn't be that able

to make a move among the close people of our tribe.

The High Priest? -The High Priest

has worked to support the emperor together.

But they have very different personalities.

So in all these years, their relationship hasn't been very good.

But he is still an elder I respect in the tribe.

For Jiu Li's safety,

he chose to rather not marry

and is still a bachelor now.

It is a great sacrifice.

So I cannot think of a reason for him to work with Dong Ling.

Listening to what you say,

do you also think that girl is a snake demon?

-I never said that.-What if she is?

Would you be like the princess

and bleed her out?

The princess is just childish.

-She won't really go make things hard on Su Mo.-I'm saying if!

-She isn't!-Then why are you locking her up here?

What do you intend to do?

-I will ensure her safety.-Ensure her safety?

I'm afraid that you won't be able when the time comes.

Don't worry. I will definitely find a way to prove that she is the Mysterious Lady of the Vermilion Bird!

You really only care about the Mysterious Lady.

-The matter of the Mysterious Lady has to do with you and me--It has to do with you.

-She has nothing to do with me.-But just now you were the one who saved Su Mo!

I just didn't like seeing you use a woman.

I will protect her well.

Then that would be for the best.

Shangguan Jin,

I think you should think some more.

If there really is someone making trouble,

your High Priest is in an advantageous position to take action.

A human heart can change just like that.

You can choose not to believe me.

But there is no way you cannot accept it.

[Peach Blossom Hollow]

I'll send you until here.

You're not going in?

The general wanted me to bring you back.

I've already finished that.

Then does Miss just want to stay here and chat idly?

What do I have to talk to you about.

Just what are you?

Sometimes you're mean, and now you send me back.

That's not important.

The important thing is that the general wants me to protect you.

And so I will protect you.

Did you kill Wu Yang?

You don't believe the general?

-But they said...--For you, the general even offended the emperor.

You still don't know how to appreciate what's good?

Thank General Baili for me.

[Jiu Li]

Aren't you usually pretty sassy?

Have you turned mute today?

You cannot be blamed for this incident.

It's just that Shangguan Jin was in too much of a rush to achieve something.

He brought you back to gain merit.

That's why all this happened today.

He's not the type of person you're talking about.

Then what type of person is he?

He's just not the same as you.

You like him?

Yes.

I can't?

I really don't know what type of woman you are.

I don't know what type of man you are either.

You know sometimes there are times I want to kill you.

But I don't want to kill you at all.

I only hope to never see you again!

Okay.

Then I'll be leaving.

My child! What do we do?

I can't live anymore!

That Emperor of Dong Ling was too cruel!

-That's why--What?

Where is our Wu Yang?

-That's right!-That's right!-Okay, everyone quiet down.

Fu'er, where has Su Mo gone?

Su Mo?

She went to Jiu Li.

Why did she go to Jiu Li?

I heard that she is the Mysterious Lady of the Vermilion Bird, so she went to Jiu Li to help them summon the Vermilion Bird.

It's all because of her! She really is a calamity star!

That's right! A calamity star!

-She's not!-Everyone quiet down and listen to me!

How could Su Mo be the Mysterious Lady of the Vermilion Bird?

-How is that impossible! She's been a calamity since childhood!-That's right!

A Mysterious Lady is a calamity star!

A calamity star!

Then-! Our Peach Blossom Hollow has another-

There isn't!

There aren't any other mysterious ladies in Peach Blossom Hollow. No one is a Mysterious Lady.

Only Su Mo is.

Fu'er.

How did you come back?

I escaped.

I escaped and then ran back here.

[Lu Gui Inn]

Young Master, that small person is a monster.

He runs especially quick. I couldn't catch up to him.

Don't deal with it anymore.

-Let's leave.-Leave?

Then, are we not capturing that little monster?

Didn't you say you wanted to investigate the matter of the High Priest?

-Also, the Mysterious Lady of the Vermilion Bird?-I can't deal with that woman.

I don't want to deal with her either.

What are you laughing at?

Speak.

I do not dare to say it.

You have things you don't dare to say?

Speak!

Young Master, it's been a long time since I've seen you angry.

What is wrong with me?

Every time I see her, I get angry so easily.

Then...are we going to continue investigating?

Think of something yourself.

Where is Brother Shangguan?

I don't know.

Then is there something he needed to do?

I don't know.

Miss Su, please enjoy your food.

Is there anyone there?

Miss Su, what is it?

My earring fell down there. Can you take a look for me?

Okay.

So sorry! So sorry!

-Head general.-Head general.

Guard outside. No one is allowed in.

Yes!

I performed my task inadequately. In front of the emperor, I made you-

I have never gotten along with the High Priest.

Today, he was able to use this matter to make a fuss in front of the emperor.

Father.

Actually, the High Priest has always been watching out for the family.

Do you think that this matter has his planning behind it?

It probably doesn't.

Finding the Mysterious Lady of the Vermilion Bird is a big matter of Jiu Li.

No matter what, the High Priest is the biological uncle of the King.

He wouldn't do that. What he doesn't like is just our Shangguan family.

But if he uses this matter to attack us,

it will affect our family's reputation.

That's why I tell you to be careful in everything.

Father, I've already checked multiple times.

My Vermilion Bird mark has already told me

that Miss Su Mo is definitely the Mysterious Lady of the Vermilion Bird.

She attracted the Toll Serpant and angered the Vermilion Bird!

You still say that she is the Mysterious Lady?

-I have disappointed you.-Don't deal with that woman anymore.

Your situation now is all her fault!

You are still willing to trust in her?
