Original subtitles

When storage units are abandoned, the treasures within are

put up for auction.

Coming up. How's everything going in the store?

I'm getting through it. It's a freaking nightmare. It's a process.

I barely get sleep anymore.

Yeah, we're all tired, Jared, but some of us can handle it. Damn it.

This is going to be a goldmine.

Sometimes it is easy being me.

Somebody is storing their hair.

My interest in this lager is slowly waning.

Whoa!

This is the wild factor.

I'm not intimidated by any buyers.

Cash is king.

Winner takes all. You don't know what you're going to encounter.

Money owns this town.

Money owns this town. Yeah, you know what I'm talking about.

Money owns this town.

Today

is

a very important day.

We got twice the cost, we need twice the business. Exactly.

Today is our grand opening.

It's been a lot of work, but we really took the shop to the next level.

Jared? What? This can't go here. It's covering up the grand opening sign. You

can't see it.

You can't see it. Simmer down.

Move this sign and then I'll be happy.

This opening is stressing Jared out. I cannot wait until this day is over.

Glass looks great.

None of it has prices on it. Need to hook the TVs up.

We've been closed for three weeks and the bills are piling up. We have to kill

it today.

It's 10.02. Let's roll.

We're open.

Well, we opened. Now we just got to dig ourselves out of this hole.

Today we're in North Hollywood, California.

We're right next door to the movie studios and the movie stars.

There's a lot of large lockers here today.

There could be some great stuff.

I've heard of a lot of good things coming out of the Hollywood area.

So people have hit some big, big units here.

I have a half a million dollars invested in my business.

If I don't make good on that every day, I'm not winning. Welcome to the American

dream.

We're in one of the oldest neighborhoods in Southern California.

You don't know what the hell you're going to find here.

Today, we're in my backyard, North Hollywood.

Every day that I don't buy something, I'm going $500 in the hole.

I can't come up here and play around.

I know we need stuff, but we can't just snatch up any old unit like we used to.

Every time we leave to go to an auction, we have to buy a unit. Brandy has to

understand that we have double the space now. That means we need double the

product.

How's everything going in the store?

We're getting through it.

It's a freaking nightmare. It's a process.

I barely get sleep anymore.

Yeah, we're all tired, Jared, but some of us can handle it.

All right, boys and girls, thank you very much. Before you go through these

gates, you need to know the rules. We're going to go to the unit. We're going to

remove the lock. We're going to give you five minutes to take a look around. You

can't go inside. You can't open any boxes.

Who's ever got the most money in their pocket today can certainly own it. Are

you ready?

All right, folks, let's go. Let's go, let's go, let's go. Let's go.

All right, let's not go inside.

Wow.

There's a ton of boxes, and I'll tell you what, I think there's going to be a

tremendous yield here. I know there's something hiding back there.

It's old stuff, but it's not good stuff.

We have to get a unit today, but it's definitely not going to be this one.

I see a lot of boxes stacked up here, so this is a numbers game. It's always nice

to have a large number of boxes to go through.

Boxes in the Hollywood area could be a good bet.

All right, a 15-year-old must be vouching. Here we go. How much money?

What are you going to pay? Say it. How much? How much? How much money? Where?

$3,300.

$300. $400, sir. How about that? Hey!

$500.

$600 now.

$600. $600.

$600. $700.

$800. $800.

That's it. I'm out.

$1,200. $1,200.

$1,400.

Barry, you're out. I got $1,300 going on. $1,400. $1,400.

Fifteen, fifteen, fourteen, fifteen.

Fifteen hundred going once and I got fourteen hundred going twice. Bear

warning. Guess what?

Damn it. Just when I think I got this thing nailed, this kid pulls a Hester on

me.

We'll make quick work with him.

Barry, if you want, I'll hold that to the dump for you for 300.

No, you're not gonna have to.

Let's move on to unit 921.

This is just a lot, a lot of books and a lot of weight and this costs a lot of

money to get home. I'd have to bring the whole crew up just to get this load out

of here. I can't read.

Unfortunately, we will not be selling books anymore, so there's nothing here

for us.

This is a definite no.

I know it just looks like a bunch of boxes with books, but we're in

Hollywood. There may be an Oscar back there. Books can be great. I mean, books

go for tens of thousands of dollars. This is my kind of locker, but I'm the

only one here with the muscle to turn a profit on it.

Here we go. Here we go, folks.

$100. There's a gambling in the house.

Here!

All right.

Yep.

Hey!

Over here!

I must be missing something today. What's everybody seeing that I'm not?

i think you really hit gold on this one i either hit gold or mold one of the two

everyone here is so afraid of a little hard work this is like taking candy from

a baby

I got a feeling there's something old in this locker, so I gotta see if my hunch

is right.

Well, could have been John Wayne's.

We're in Hollywood.

Who puts hot sauce in storage?

Oh my God.

It appears that somebody is storing their hair.

That's why they call this place Holly Weird.

My interest in this locker is slowly waning.

All right, let's do some of these boxes here. This is... Whoa!

All right, let's do some of these boxes here. This is... Whoa!

Look at this, Wizard of Oz.

Not. So far, the only thing vintage in this locker is me.

Hey, now.

I think at one time they were a pair of boots.

Now they look more like a...

Contemporary piece of art or something.

The boots. And guess what's next?

Wow.

Now this does look old and ancient. The material is kind of furry.

It's kind of like felt. This actually, I think, is from an old Hollywood costume.

I'm going to get this appraised. I'm hoping there's a rabbit in this hat.

or I'm out two grand.

A lot of fishing stuff here. I see an older reproduction bronze lamp. There's

a big deer in the back and all kinds of stuff.

I can't waste this whole day. If the price tag is low enough, I'm going for

it. God, that's such a hodgepodge of...

You can't tell, and it's patched so crappily. This is the last damn locker

of the day, and I can't see half the stuff in here. This unit's a total

crapshoot. There's a lot of bags of dirty clothes.

There's a buck in there.

A buck maybe, but no dough.

All right. If you're ready to go, I'm ready to go. We've got a big, nice

sportsman. What are you going to pay? How much? How much? How much money on

this one? I like it.

How much? How much? How much? How much? How much?

How much?

How much?

How much?

How much?

How much?

What the F is wrong with Jared?

Damn

it.

I told Brandy I'm not going back to the store empty-handed, and I meant it.

I laid my guard down for one second.

And Jared bids on this crap.

You are officially out of your mind.

There's a bunch of... I don't need to be coming up here. This is supposed to be

Hollywood, dude. I thought this thing was just going to... The goodies, I

didn't know.

Another day, another 500 freaking dollars down the drain.

Now what's going on? Now I can't even get my damn truck.

It's a bunch of... Look at this.

God.

The hell park like that?

Today, blue.

And I'm not talking about the sky.

It's the top ten worst lockers I've ever seen in my life.

Yeah, so much for Hollywood.

I stole this unit for 900 bucks.

No one else saw the money in all these books.

Sometimes it is easy being me.

So far, all I'm seeing is books, books, and more books.

There's 50 bucks in that box. There's 40 there. There's 40 there.

This is going to be a gold mine.

Grab a couple dollies here, guys.

Start laying them out.

This is definitely an entire bookstore, and it's all mine.

It doesn't matter what book you pick up. If it has a barcode on it, you can skim

through here.

There's one for $13.50.

Wow, that book right there, 32 bucks.

There's three of them. Right there is almost 100 bucks.

These books are actually almost all in like new condition, and that is gonna be

definitely a plus.

So every step I'm gonna take is gonna be about $300.

So there's three, six, nine, 12.

I'm not much of a reader. 18.

But damn, I'm starting to like books.

84, 86.

There's $9,000 worth of books right there in that pile.

Oh my God, they barely put a dent in this thing. We have more than half the

unit left to even process.

If I get just one buck for every book, I've got 15 grand here easy.

This is going to end up being one of my best buys of the year right here. Read

it and weep, suckers.

I love this business.

Brandy was too mad to even look at this unit again.

So I got Mark down here to help me go through it.

No wonder Brandy didn't want to come.

What do you mean?

What's not to want here?

This is a gold mine right here. How did you know? We're going to find out right

now.

I'm about to go through my unit, and all I can hear is Brandy's voice in my head.

We better make our money back on this unit.

How come you're not lifting anything heavy?

You sound just like her, I swear.

Oh.

Junk.

More junk.

Here's something.

An air compressor?

Oh, bring it. Come on.

Salsa. Oh, boo.

Is everything in here broken?

The unit is disgusting.

Do you think that's why Brandy didn't want to come? Maybe she knew something

we didn't. I think she's smarter than you are to tell you the truth. Whoa,

whoa, whoa. Hey, now.

The last thing I want to do right now is go back and tell Brandy that she was

right about this unit. If I don't come back with something good, Brandy's never

going to let me live this town.

Oh. More chuckleware. I got you a reach pole.

Oh, I know. What am I reaching for? I'm coming in. I'm coming in.

Here you go.

What? What'd you find?

Whoa.

Okay.

Here you go.

What did you find?

Whoa.

You got some license plates?

Whoa.

1915.

What the hell?

Those are old as hell. Those are 100 years old.

We're definitely going to have to get these things looked at. These are

probably pretty rare, I'm guessing.

These have to be worth something. How many cars were even on the road in 1915?

I've gone through everything there is to go through.

If these license plates end up being worth like 100 bucks a piece, at least

100 bucks a piece, we're good. That ought to shut Brandy up.

The rest of this stuff is headed straight to the dump. These plates are

my only hope.

Hello? Hey.

What's up?

So basically everything in this unit was trash.

We found some old license plates.

Mark says he knows a guy and they might be worth a couple of bucks. But other

than that, there's nothing of value. We're not even going to waste our time.

Nothing.

Nada. All right, I'll see you back in the shop. I gotta go. I gotta keep this

channel clear.

You should have called.

Today we're off to the Hollywood Hatter to see my buddy Sal.

He is the last word in new hats as well as vintage hats, and I'm hoping he's got

some good news for me.

I shelled out $2,000 for this locker.

There better be some sort of magic in that hat.

Let's take a look at it. That's an oldie but a goodie, huh? That's the only thing

I knew about it is that it was old.

And it actually has a date.

Really? If you really take a good look at it, it's kind of worn.

It says here 1858.

Serious? Yeah. Wow. I knew I would find something old in that locker. For being

so old, it actually is a very good...

Decent condition. I know it's an American-made hat.

Chances are it was from Danbury, Connecticut.

From the 1830s up to the 1940s, most of the hats in the world were made in

Danbury, Connecticut. Interesting. This one here is actually beaver, which is a

finer fur. It feels like beaver. Nothing feels like beaver.

What do you think this thing is actually worth?

To a collector, obviously.

Okay, well, first of all, it's missing the lining. The lining is a really

important part of a hat because it tells you more information of the actual hat

maker. Yeah, I would say this one would probably give you, you could probably

get about $450.

That's it?

Yeah.

I paid $2,000 for the unit.

I see. I mean, you probably feel terrible.

Yeah, it's definitely not worth $2,000.

Burned by the beaver again.

How do you know this wasn't Abe Lincoln's hat?

Timing is right.

What, there's not a hole in it?

Well. From the bullet.

Eric, how you doing?

Pretty good. Pleasure to meet you. I found out old license plates can be

worth a lot of money.

So I got Eric Taylor from Porcelain Plates to come down here and check these

out.

Are you crossing your fingers?

I am. I'm pretty nervous right now.

Jared spent over $1,200 on a locker, and this is what he brings back?

He should be nervous.

I'm hoping that they're going to be authentic old license plates because

basically nothing else in that unit was worth money.

Well, I can tell you right now they're all authentic. They're completely

original. This is a pair of standard passenger-issue California 1915 plates.

This is a 1910 standard Ohio passenger plate.

I can see the year and the state carved right on them. What else you got? This

is Pennsylvania, 1913. From 1906 through 1909, they were essentially driver's

licenses. And what you had to do was put the plate on your car, and then if you

got in another car, you had to take the plate off and put it on that car. You

had to carry it with you to every car you drove, like a driver's license.

So you had to carry that in your pocket if you wanted to get in the bar? Yeah,

well, you know.

This is a 1913 main plate.

This one's kind of interesting because it's three digits. And in a lot of

states, the value and desirability of a porcelain license plate is based on the

size of the plate. The standard May 1913 plate is a four-digit plate. When you

can get a three-digit, that's a plus.

Two-digit, better still.

I'll chop that thing into a one-digit plate if it'll give me my money back.

Let me ask you a question. These are very damaged.

I mean, does that take a lot away from the value?

It does.

It does, unfortunately.

What does this go for?

All things considered, I'd say you're probably looking around $2.75 for the

bunch.

That's a lot less than $12.50 there, mister.

Just opened the store, already in the hole.

Off to a great start.

Might as well just call it a loss and move on.

Dave Hester turned the page on yet another profit, making over $14,000 on

his books.

Daryl Sheets exited North Hollywood stage left without a locker.

Jared and Brandy registered a $1,000 loss with their antique license plates.

And Barry Weiss lost his hide with his beaver hat.

I knew Jared needed a babysitter today. He's going to turn our new store into a

junkyard.

You never know what's going to turn.

I busted you guys early on. Good try.

Got to get up earlier than that to fool this old.
