-Yeah.
Let's go.
-Oh, hey guys.
So what's the story?
What are you doing this afternoon?
-Nothing with you.
Get lost, Naruto.
-Ah, come on.
We'll have lots of fun together.
Just let me hang out with you guys and you'll see.
-No way, forget it.
Not now and not tonight for the test of courage either.
-The test of courage?
-Why'd you have to tell him about that?
-Wow!
Sounds like fun.
Just tell me where to go and I'll be there.
-We told you can't come with us.
Got it?
And don't try to follow us.
Come on, guys.
SALESMAN: No surprises right here.
CUSTOMER: Can I get some rice?
I'm starving.
BOY (VOICEOVER): Got it?
And don't try to follow us.
NARUTO (VOICEOVER): Hmph.
I'll follow whomever I want.
I don't care if they don't want me to know where they're going.
I'm going to find out anyway.
-Is that the boy everyone talks about?
-Which one?
Yeah, that's him.
-This is the perfect chance to pull a prank on them.
So what can I do to scare them?
-Hey, you little brat.
-Huh?
-Get out of here.
WOMAN: Did you see that?
-Hey, what's the big idea, buddy?
-I don't want you here.
You're nothing but a pest.
-But I wasn't even doing anything.
I mean, I was just looking at the masks you have.
-That's Naruto.
-That kids just a troublemaker.
-Nothing but trouble.
-Bad seed.
-Here, is this what you want?
Then just take it and get lost.
And don't come back.
-Fine.
And what's your problem, huh?
Stop, all right?
Stop looking at me like that.
[scream]
-Sheesh, some test of courage, you cowards.
None of you wimps is brave enough to go all the way in?
-You don't have to call us names, you know?
-Whatever.
Move it, loser.
This isn't so bad, I guess.
All I have to do is take one of those sticks.
[growl]
[whimpering]
-It's a monster fox!
[screaming]
-Huh?
What in the world's going on?
-We saw a monster fox.
-What?
[chuckling]
-Serves them right.
Those chickens all got scared and ran off.
Ha!
You better run, sensei, or the fox will get you too.
MAN: Hurry, hurry, this way.
-But mom and dad, is everything OK?
-Everything's going to be just fine.
Do exactly what your guide says and evacuate the village.
-Don't worry.
It's just a precaution.
We Advance Troops won't let the Nine-Tails set one
foot in the village.
-Yeah, teach that old Nine-Tails a lesson.
-You got it.
-Please look after him
-I will, ma'am.
-Bye then.
-Do your best.
-Did you hear the news?
The Advance Troops were defeated.
-No, they're all dead then?
-What?
The Advance Troops are-- are all dead?
It's not true.
It can't be true.
My mom and dad can't be dead.
They can't.
It isn't true.
-Hm?
What's the matter, sensei?
-Look, Naruto.
Don't you realize what you're doing
by pulling these pranks all the time?
-There it is again.
I don't understand it.
Everybody, even you, my own teacher-- why does everybody
look at me like that all of the time?
I'm not just a nuisance or some kind of germ.
I'm a person too.
I am.
I'm Naruto Uzumaki.
Don't forget it!
-Naruto.
-That's it.
I'm done.
I'll never go back to the Academy again.
-No, wait.
Damn it.
[theme music]
-Good morning, everyone.
STUDENTS: Good morning, sensei.
-All right, first let me take attendance.
Hm?
Naruto's not here?
-Who cares?
-He's such a loser.
-Sakura.
-Hm?
-Do you know where he is?
-No.
I didn't notice he was gone.
-Yeah, I don't think I even saw him this morning.
IRUKA: Kiba, did you see him?
-Huh?
No, I didn't see him, and I have no interest in seeing him.
Right, Akamaru?
[bark]
-All right then.
Let's just start class.
IRUKA (VOICEOVER): But why not?
GUARD (VOICEOVER): Lord Hokage is
busy with his official duties.
IRUKA (VOICEOVER): I don't understand.
Did he give a reason why he won't see me?
GUARD (VOICEOVER): That's not our concern.
We have our orders.
No one is permitted to enter.
[sigh]
KAKASHI: Hello there.
-Hm?
Huh?
-You know, this is my favorite spot,
but I can't really concentrate on my reading
with all that sighing going on down there.
-Oh, I'm so sorry.
I'll just go.
-No, don't bother.
I was just about to leave.
See ya.
What's wrong?
You look depressed.
If you feel like talking, I'll listen.
-Kakashi, that's your name, right?
The thing is I happen to be-- I'm Naruto Uzumaki's homeroom
teacher.
-Really?
-I went to ask the Third Hokage to relieve me
from my assignment, but he wouldn't see me.
The truth is I don't have any idea how to deal with that boy.
Nothing works.
I don't know why the Hokage thought
I was the right person for this.
I'm just not qualified to teach a kid like Naruto.
-I see.
That's why you look lifeless.
-What?
-There's no spark in your eyes.
-Kakashi, how is it that you were there and yet--
-Forgive me.
It was my fault.
I made an error in the formation.
I realized that I should have kept him right beside me.
-Ah, Iruka, how are your wounds healing?
Are you doing all right?
-Yes.
It's a minor injury.
But thank you for your concern, sir.
-I'm aware that you worked very hard on your mission.
I want you to take some time off to recuperate and regain
your strength.
-Lord Hokage, I was responsible for the incident that occurred.
Our unit leader did nothing wrong.
-I fully understand the situation already.
You don't need to explain it to me.
-Sir.
-Iruka, you've always been a kind person,
one who possesses great compassion,
and that is an admirable quality.
But I believe your kindness proved detrimental
in a crucial moment against an enemy ninja.
There may come a time when that compassionate nature of yours
puts your comrades lives in danger.
-Yes, I was aware of that and I thought I'd made the necessary
adjustments but--
-Well, what's done is done, and cannot be changed now.
But for your next mission--
-Lord Hokage.
-Hm?
-Actually sir, I'd like to speak to you about that.
-Go ahead.
You may speak freely.
-I'm not sure if you remember this, Lord Hokage.
But after I had lost my parents, you spoke to me
in front of the Stone Monument of Heroes
and you told me about the Will of Fire.
-Yes, of course, I remember it well.
-Everything changed after we had that conversation.
I could focus on training and carrying out my duties.
The lesson you taught me that day about the Will of Fire--
I'd like to pass it on to the next generation of ninja,
to help them out as well.
-Let me make sure that I've understood.
You want to become an instructor at the Academy?
-Yes, if I may, sir.
-Well then, starting tomorrow, you
shall be an assistant instructor at the Academy.
-Seriously?
You mean it, Lord Hokage?
-Your eyes had a spark back then.
Now they're lifeless.
Perhaps you've forgotten a basic rule of teaching--
you cannot open the mind of another unless you have an open
mind yourself.
Or perhaps there's something else you're trying to forget.
-The Nine-Tails sealed inside of Naruto
is responsible for my parents' deaths.
I'm fully aware that Naruto is not
to blame for what occurred back then.
But whenever I look at him, I can't
stop thinking about what's hiding deep inside of him,
and about what the Nine-Tails did.
I don't think someone like me can make Naruto open up.
-Actually, you are the only one who can reach Naruto's heart.
And that-- that is your personal ordeal.
-My ordeal?
-Yes, Lord Hokage has presented you with a personal ordeal.
I believe if you can just hang in there a little longer,
you will find the way to reach Naruto.
Rise up to meet the Hokage's expectations.
So long.
KAKASHI (VOICEOVER): The Third Hokage
sure made a bold decision.
[laughter]
WOMAN: Choji, time to go.
MAN: Daichi, dinner time.
BOY: OK.
WOMAN: Let's go home, everyone.
GIRL: Mom.
-What do you think you're doing?
I told you not to play with that boy.
-Come on, let's go.
SHIKAKU: Shikamaru, come on, let's go.
-All right, dad.
-You too, Choji.
We said we'd walk you home.
Now let's go, you two.
Let's move.
-See you, Naruto.
-Later.
-Yeah, bye.
-Dad, let go of my hand.
[chuckle]
-What?
Are you embarrassed to be seen with your old man?
-Hmph.
Thank you for the food.
-No, let me go.
My mom and dad are still fighting back there!
[doorbell]
[doorbell]
[groaning]
[doorbell]
-Whoa.
Who's that at my door?
And why are they here so early?
What?
Iruka-sensei?
Why is he coming to see me here?
[doorbell]
-Hey, Naruto.
[door opens]
-Huh?
Naruto, you here?
IRUKA (VOICEOVER): Is this all he ever eats?
-Thanks for the food.
-You're going to Choji's later, aren't you?
Better hurry.
-Yeah, yeah.
Hey dad, can I ask you about something
that's been bugging me?
-What is it?
-It's about Naruto.
Why does everybody avoid him like the plague?
Did he do something wrong?
-Shikamaru, why don't you tell me how you feel about Naruto.
-Uh, you want to know how I feel?
Huh, I never thought about it before.
Well, he's not the sharpest knife in the drawer,
but he's pretty funny.
I don't think we'll ever be buddies or anything,
but it's not like I want to avoid him.
-Well then, ignore the others.
I say treat him however you want to.
-Yeah, that's exactly what I'll do.
-I have so much free time since I quit the Academy.
Hm?
What do you guys want?
-Hey, isn't that Naruto down there?
-Huh?
-Naruto, we all decided that you can join our group if you want.
-Huh?
Are you serious?
-Of course.
But there's just one thing you have
to do before you can hang out with us.
-Oh yeah?
And what is that?
-Yesterday, my dad's patrol unit had a fight with some enemy
ninja in the back hills, and he said
they left the corpses out there.
If you can bring back something from one of those corpses,
then we'll let you join our group.
-For real?
-Yeah.
-All right then.
I'll bring back something for sure.
You can count on it.
-What a loser.
-Boy, is he in for a surprise.
Dad said the enemy might still be out there.
-That's so mean.
You still mad about how he scared you
in the test of courage?
-Never mind that.
Did you see the smile on his face?
He doesn't have a clue this is all a trick.
-All right, guys.
Has anyone seen Naruto?
-Nope, haven't seen him.
-I saw him this morning heading into the back hills.
-Pipe down, Shikamaru.
-What are you doing?
IRUKA (VOICEOVER): Into the back hills?
-He went looking for corpses, didn't he, Hibachi?
Your pranks have gotten annoying and so have you.
-Stay here and study.
-What?
-What's going on?
-I don't know.
-What is it?
NARUTO (VOICEOVER): Finally, I'm going
to have friends just like everybody else.
[theme music]
[theme music]
WOMAN (VOICEOVER): Iruka-sensei, did you hear the news?
There was a battle in the forest in the back hills.
IRUKA (VOICEOVER): A battle?
WOMAN (VOICEOVER): A patrol unit discovered
a group of enemy spies.
They were able to kill one of them and bring the body back.
IRUKA (VOICEOVER): If that's the case,
we can't let the students go near that area.
There might still be spies hiding out there.
NARUTO (VOICEOVER): Next time on Naruto Shippuden-- Iruka's
Decision.
IRUKA (VOICEOVER): I hope nothing's happened to him.
