Fifteen Years of Waiting for Migratory Birds

Episode 6

Li Li! Why are you alone? Where's your partner?

Did Li Jun go back because it's too far?

Then what about your partner?

Yichen got her shoes wet, so she went back.

She asked me to look for a migratory bird's feather as her present.

That's hard to do.

Don't talk about feathers, I can't even spot their shadows.

This will help you complete your task.

Why didn't you keep this for yourself? It's a pretty feather.

Even if I like it, it doesn't mean it belongs to me.

Take it.

Look, it's a large group of migrating birds!

Every year, migratory birds have to fly from the North Pole to the South Pole,

then from the South Pole to the North Pole.

In one year, they have to fly 40,000 miles.

No matter if they travel through typhoons or hail storms,

they will always fly back around this time of the year.

As long as you're willing to wait, you will be able to see them.

Among animals, the ones best at keeping their promises are the migratory birds.

Although migratory birds are incredible,

but among the animals, migratory birds aren't the only ones good at keeping promises.

There's also a human called Pei Shangxuan.

Pei Shangxuan's word is his migratory birds' bond.

The correct quote is, "A man's word is his bond."

Only you know so many proverbs.

We can see them this year, but I don't know when I'll see them again.

That's easy.

Aren't they coming every year?

When they come back next year, we shall come, too.

Next year?

We don't even know where we'll be at next year.

No matter where we are,

as long as we promised to do so, we will come back.

What are you trying to do?

May human Li Li remember the promise she made with human Pei Shangxuan.

Whether it's 40,000 miles

or 100,000 miles, we will definitely come back.

With the migratory birds as our witnesses, we shall not break our promise.

♫ of unknowing fear. ♫

♫ I, who is dull and ignorant, ♫

♫ really want to tell you: ♫

♫ Please don’t disappear like the migratory birds do. ♫

Look, there's another flock.

♫ The love I want to give you is like fireworks. ♫

There's more over there, too.

So many.

This is really amazing.

Next year, I would like to watch the migratory birds with Pei Shangxuan.

Cousin Li Li!

Good morning. Xiao Jun, good morning.

- Good morning. - Good morning, Xuanxuan.

Did you have fun over the weekend outing?

I had fun. You made such a nice arrangement; of course, I was happy.

Oh right, Cousin Li Li. Did you see the migratory birds?

Xiao Jun, did you see them?

Nope.

Xuanxuan, what about you?

Nope.

Then that's a pity.

I'm really hungry, I haven't had breakfast yet.

Have you eaten yet?

Nope.

Then let's go to the canteen.

Cousin Li Li, bye-bye.

[Library]

Although the migratory birds are amazing,

there is one who holds promise the best among the animals,

a human called Pei Shangxuan.

May human Li Li remember the promise she made with human Pei Shangxuan.

Whether it's 40,000 miles or 100,000 miles, we will definitely come back.

With the migratory birds as our witnesses, we shall not break our promise.

Oh right, Cousin Li Li.

Did you see the migratory birds?

Xuanxuan, what about you?

Nope.

Such a pity.

Li Li.

Li Li, what's wrong with you?

I'm alright.

You don't seem that well today.

Although you said that you were alright,

I know that you must have something on your mind.

How's it? Do you want to talk to me about it?

I remember the last time I saw you like this

was when your father passed away.

I'm your best friend.

So if you are sad or unhappy,

I can tell.

Actually, I think

ever since your father left,

you have never been truly happy.

You keep holding that poker face of yours everyday.

Not letting others see the sadness in you, right?

Do you think this is effective?

Do you think that it helps?

Xiao Jun, do you know this?

There was someone who kept wearing a mask,

and people surrounding her kept asking her to take it down.

But when she finally takes her mask down

and shows the wounds on her face,

the people surrounding her will say that it's really scary and disgusting.

No one will be willing to get closer to her.

Who will pity her then?

You have really thought too much, Li Li.

You are really feeling too insecure.

You have me.

This good friend will keep on supporting you.

One has to hold onto hope.

It's better than living hopelessly.

I'm just afraid that being too hopeful will cause me to be even more disappointed in the end.

In the past, my family

all thought that my father would recover from his illness.

But one day,

he just collapsed all of a sudden.

I shouted loudly, "Who can come and save my dad?!"

"Who can come and help me?"

But what's the use of having hope?

My father's hands got colder and colder. Colder and colder...

I wanted to use my own hands to warm him up.

But in the end...

Li Li, don't hold all these emotions inside of you.

Let's not care about anything today.

Let's just cry them all-out for today.

Xiao Jun.

Quickly cry them out.

Wait a minute, everyone.

I have something to tell everyone.

To be honest, I'm about to transfer schools soon.

I really can't bear to part with you guys who I have been together for more than two years,

so I have prepared a farewell party.

Everyone must come tonight.

Why are you transferring schools so suddenly?

To be honest, I have already been preparing for it for a long time.

It was delayed because of the SARS.

Everyone must come tonight.

Li Li!

What time is it now? Why are there just the two of us?

Where are Xiao Jun and the others?

Pei Shangxuan, I have something to tell you.

If you have something to say, just say it.

Aren't you always direct and violent towards me?

I...

Wait a moment, I have to pick up a call.

- Li Li. - Hello?

Is it that difficult to say it out loud?

Just make a left turn over there and you will arrive.

Do you need me to go and fetch you?

Okay, see you later.

Say it.

I...

- Pei Shangxuan! - I like—

You look good in those clothes.

- Cousin Li Li. - Li Li,

are Xiao Jun and the others not here yet? I will give them a call to hurry up.

♫ One person’s heartbeat ♫

♫ While sprinting at midnight,♫

♫ the silence is just right ♫

♫ One person’s afternoon nap won’t be disturbed,♫

♫ no matter how long it is. ♫

This year, I would like to see the migratory birds once.

♫ the beauty of loneliness. ♫

♫ Higher anticipation will only lead to self-created worries. ♫

♫ Higher anticipation will only lead to self-created worries. ♫

♫ Since we once deeply loved, ♫

♫ I want to ask you once again ♫

♫ to hold me tight, ♫

♫ to forget me. ♫

♫ I let you go ♫

The happiness of regaining after a loss

has almost made people forget the reality of parting.

Rather than maintaining a long-distance friendship,

accompaniment is probably harder to maintain.

Ready?

It'll be ready soon.

- Are you done? - Coming, coming.

5...4...3...2... Yeah!

Li Jun...

I'll miss you.

Shi Xiao.

You have to contact us often.

Li Li,

although it's been a while since I've said that I was going to transfer schools,

but when this day really comes, I still can't bear to part with you.

Li Li.

Li Li.

You silly.

It's not like you're leaving forever.

I promise

that I'll always be waiting for you in this city.

Okay?

Pinky swear.

No breaking our promise.

My God.

Is it really that serious?

I should go now.

I'll send you off.

Bye-bye, Li Li.

Xiao Jun!

My mom said

that tears are salty.

They're not good for your skin.

Girls shouldn't cry too much.

Good morning.

Everyone!

Please be quiet.

Let me introduce to you

a new member of our class.

His name is Daniel.

He's a new transfer student from Taiwan.

From now on, everyone

will learn together

and help each other.

Let's welcome him.

You can take a seat over there.

Do you know him?

Not really, I've only seen him once.

Hi, nice to meet you.

Nice to meet you. I'm Han Yichen.

That's a nice name.

Thank you.

Okay, everyone.

Take out the test paper from yesterday,

we will go through the questions.

Out of the fill-in-the-blank questions,

the easiest question to get wrong

is question 5.

The f(x) function.

Han Yichen,

Daniel doesn't have a test paper.

You can share with him.

Okay.

Who knows the answer to

this question?

Pei Shangxuan!

You can answer.

Do you know how to do it?

You don't know the answer, do you?

Does anyone else know the answer?

Teacher.

Daniel.

We need to use the inverse function method

for this question.

We just need to

swap the two sides of the formula.

So the answer should be

1/x plus 2.

Excellent.

You may sit, Daniel.

Thank you.

Pei Shangxuan,

the college entrance exam is coming up.

Please start taking a correct attitude

towards your studies, okay?

Sit down.

Okay, everyone.

That's it for today.

I will check your papers tomorrow

after you have made corrections.

Li Li,

you can take care of Daniel.

Okay.

Okay, the class is over.

Stand up.

Goodbye, students.

Goodbye, teacher.

The school building is that way

and the administration building is over there.

The assembly hall is towards the front

and the computer lab

is next to the hall.

And then towards...

Why are you looking at me?

Is there something on my face?

There's nothing on your face,

but there's a really dark cloud

on top of your head.

From the school gate to the classroom,

to taking me on this school tour,

your head has been covered by dark clouds this whole time

and you've been pulling a long face.

Classmate Li Li,

if it weren't for Teacher Gao instructing you

to take me on a school tour,

you wouldn't have cared about these things.

Right?

It's not that I'm unhappy

because of you.

I'm just upset

because my best friend left today,

and my spirits are a bit low.

I know.

I even saw you crying at the school gate today.

You know,

the girls from my old school never cried

so over the top like you.

Why?

I'll tell you a secret.

They all had fake lashes and eyeliner.

It would've made them look like a panda if they cried.

So when they cry,

they would always adhere to this principle:

They'd rather be beaten to death than to show their faces.

Are you for real? You're lying, right?

You laughed.

Then even if I were lying to you,

I did nothing wrong.

Alright.

Daniel,

welcome to our school.

Feel free to ask me

if you have any questions.

Thank you.

Let's go.

I'll take you to our school's sports field.

- Sports field? - Yes.

We have a really big basketball court

and soccer field.

- There's a soccer field ? - Yes.

Do you like to play soccer?

Yes, I do.

That's great!

A lot of the boys in our class like soccer as well.

That's awesome.

Isn't that Pei Shangxuan from our class?

He seems pretty skilled.

It is him.

He's really passionate about soccer.

I've never met anyone

more die-hard about soccer than he.

Here.

The newbie over there!

Can you give us back the ball?

Me?

Yes, you!

Judging by your skinny arms and skinny legs,

you probably won't be able to kick it.

Just hand it over!

Sorry about that.

Li Li, let's go.

I thought he was just a bookworm,

but it seems like he's something more.

Impressive-looking on the outside but useless on the inside.

Ignore them, let's continue.

What's wrong?

It's nothing.

You're really good at soccer,

and you seem pretty on top of your studies.

I'm impressed.

I was actually a forward back on my old soccer team.

Your deskmate, Pei Shangxuan,

seems really strong in soccer.

If I have a chance,

I'd like to ask him for some advice.

But that unintentional kick I did earlier

seems to have upset him a little.

Not at all.

He's a really nice person.

It's just that sometimes he can be a bit self-opinionated.

He wants the whole world to treat him as a hero.

When I didn't know him that well,

I felt like he was a really hateful person,

but it was only after we slowly got to know each other

that I started to realize

how many strong points he has.

You're making me curious here.

Is there anything else that's interesting to share?

This way I can get to know

my new classmates faster.

Well, he really likes soccer.

You've seen for yourself.

He's able to fight for the glory of his team

and win the competition even when he has an injured ankle.

You can do it, Pei Shangxuan!

He's fallen over!

Shangxuan, are you alright?

Do you need to go see the doctor?

Is he alright?

Let's go to the first-aid room.

♫ Do you still remember the images left on the window ♫

♫ after the rain? ♫

♫ The diary entries are all about us two. ♫

He has a strong sense of justice.

When he sees trouble up ahead, he would help out

even if he knows there'll be danger.

♫ I’m talking to you while separated by the sky. ♫

♫ Can you let me walk you home again? ♫

You have guts!

You know him so well.

By the looks of it, your relationship with him

must be pretty good.

Not really.

We're just friends.

So that's how it is.

I almost misunderstood.

It's getting dark.

I'm sorry.

In order to show me the school, you had to delay getting home.

I don't mind. My house is on the way, anyway.

Really?

That's good, we can go together then.

Tomorrow, I'll take you to

that garden at the back of our school.

Sure.

College Entrance Exam Math Practice Book

"You reap what you sow.

I'll sow a reference book.

Let's see if you can reap a top score in your college entrance exam."

Can't he just speak normally? Why must he use such an secretive attitude?

Thanks.

Who is this for?

You'll see.

I cooked a more tender egg today.

- How do you like it? - It's pretty good.

Hey, Qianren!

I made some green bean soup for you to take to school.

Thanks.

Liu Qianren has seemingly stopped acting hostile towards my mother and me.

This family is becoming filled with more warmth

because of his change.

But can time and perseverance really change everything?

You know that I can't do anything about it.

The college entrance exam is only months away,

but you still need to participate in the school's literature and art performance, right?

Li Li, I need to discuss this with you.

There's you, Han Yichen,

Pei Shangxuan, and also Daniel.

You four can make a miniature theatrical play. What do you think?

Teacher Gao, I think it's best for someone like me with a lack of artistic gene not to participate.

Li Li, you're the student that I trust the most as a teacher.

The three of them are all small celebrities of this school.

If all four of you

plan a performance together, it'll be good enough.

Don't worry, I already told the three of them.

You'll be in charge of this event.

They'll listen to your orders, okay?

Okay, Teacher Gao. I'll try my best.

Okay. You may go back now.

- Goodbye, Teacher. - Goodbye.

Cousin Li Li.

The teacher already told me about the literature performance.

I'll cooperate well.

Thank you, then.

Hey,

Sister Li Li, I heard we're performing

Romeo and Juliet. Are the roles assigned yet?

Who do you want to play?

The only roles for girls are Juliet and the maid.

How about we draw for it?

It's more fair like this. It's just like how we played games when we were young.

Here, there are two slips of paper here.

One of them is Juliet, the other is the maid.

[Maid]

I'm so sorry, Sister Li Li.

Juliet is mine.

You didn't have to bother yourself with this.

I never thought of wanting to play Juliet.

Aren't you tired of playing such a game by now? You did this since we were young.

We're practicing in the afternoon. Remember to tell Pei Shangxuan to come.

Thank you, Cousin Li Li.

[Romeo and Juliet]

Bright angel,

you are as glorious as an angel tonight.

You shine above me, like a winged messenger from heaven

who makes mortal men fall on their backs to look up at the sky,

watching the angel walking on clouds and sailing on air.

Romeo would be just as perfect

even if he wasn’t called Romeo.

even if he wasn’t called Romeo.

Romeo, lose your name.

Trade in your name—which really has nothing to do with you—and take all of me in exchange.

My love, as long as you don't like it,

I will change it all.

For you, I am willing to change everything.

What are you doing? What are you doing?

Pei Shangxuan! We're practicing now. Why are you late?

It's not your role yet, go sit down.

Student Pei Shangxuan, may I ask you what this play is called?

It's Romeo and Juliet, I know.

Where in the script does it say that Pei Shangxuan is Romeo?

Why do you get to be late and then fight for the spot as Romeo?

How much of the script can you even recite?

Then I'll answer your questions one by one.

First, Romeo is the main male character.

Everyone will be focused on him.

The role needs the aura of an idol and good acting.

I have all of these characteristics.

And you, I'm sorry, are not sufficient.

How do I not have them?

That's enough!

The role of Romeo isn't determined by you two yelling at each other!

Let me just give my two cents, too.

Xuanxuan is right.

Since the main male character is Romeo,

there should be a person that fits the role to play him.

How about this?

You guys should audition for the role.

We'll see who is better and choose the better one.

I have no opinions against it.

Okay.

To avoid the unfairness with only my opinion,

let's call in some students to vote.

I'll look for them right away.

You two!

Brothers, stop for a minute!

Come here, listen to me.

I have something that I need your help with. Are you guys willing to help me?

Yes!

Okay, Let's go!

Pardon me, Pei Shangxuan and I have a competition.

Can you guys come and cheer us on?

Okay.

Okay, hurry. Be quiet.

Our class will be hosting a literature performance next week.

There were some conflicts concerning the casting of the male lead, Romeo.

Pei Shangxuan and Daniel both want to play this role,

so we called everyone here to vote fairly.

So? Do you want to have a debate or a duel?

We're acting, not going to war.

Why would we have a duel or debate?

I looked through the script and noticed that there was a scene where

Romeo has to support Juliet from falling.

A bridal carry is very tiring.

It's small news if you embarrass yourself while failing on stage.

But if the main female character falls,

it's going to be serious.

Pei Shangxuan, what do you want to do now?

Nothing.

Since we've invited everyone here,

with so many people, we must warm the audience up

and liven the atmosphere.

How about we have a push-up competition?

Great!

We'll each choose one girl

to carry on our backs. Then, we'll see who can do the most.

Go! Go! Go!

Go! Go! Go!

Three, two, one!

Time is up!

Daniel did 48 push-ups!

Pei Shangxuan did 50 push-ups!

Pei Shangxuan wins!

Watch how I flip the results in the next round!

Keep on bluffing.

Juliet is the sun!

Rise up, beautiful sun,

and kill the jealous moon.

Ah! That is my love.

If only she knew

I was loving her.

She’s talking, but she’s not saying anything. However, her eyes

are saying something.

I will answer them.

No!

I am too bold.

She’s not talking to me.

Two of the brightest stars in the whole sky had to go away on business,

and they’re asking her eyes

to twinkle in their places until they return.

Bravo! Bravo! Bravo!

The brightness of her cheeks

would outshine the stars,

the way the sun

outshines a lamp.

If her eyes were in the night sky,

they would shine so brightly through space

that birds would start singing,

thinking her light was the light of day.

Look, how she leans her hand on her cheek.

That beauty is so wonderful.

Oh, I wish I was the glove on that hand

so that I could touch

that cheek.

What are you doing? What are you doing?

Pei Shangxuan, Daniel is only acting. Do you have to overreact like this?

Haven't you watched enough? Hurry and persuade him.

Xuanxuan, Daniel must have been immersed into his acting.

Don't think about it too much.

Okay. Since he's already so into it when practicing,

what's going to happen by the actual performance?

Li Li, fire him.

That's enough! Can you be more mature?

Let's start voting now.

If you want to vote for Pei Shangxuan, stand there.

For Daniel, stand there.

Are you drawing the line with me like this?

You both are my friends.

I'm not being biased.

Also, you brought this upon yourself.

You should take responsibility of this.

Don't go! Pei Shangxuan acted so well!

Xuanxuan was incredible!

- Goodbye. - Pei Shangxuan! Pei Shangxuan!

Are you okay?

I'm fine.

Are you really okay?

Pei Shangxuan! Wait for us, Pei Shangxuan!

As expected, the 'goodbye' he said means "let's not see each other ever again." (The literal translation of goodbye in Chinese)

It's all because of me. If he didn't see you walking with me,

he definitely would've greeted you.

If he can't accept just two sentences of truth,

what kind of friend is he?

Mom, I'm home!

Li Li, hurry and see who's here.

- Uncle! - Li Li!

Come, come, come.

What took you so long to come and visit? Did you forget about us?

Uncle is wrong. Uncle is bad.

I was too busy getting married and changing my job.

I really couldn't find time. Let me look at you.

You've gotten skinnier. You were studying too much that you've gotten skinnier.

Guo Qiang, I was about to ask you.

How did you get so rich?

Why did you buy such expensive gifts?

Are these expensive? I feel like these aren't enough.

During the College Entrance Exam, she has to eat well.

Am I right? Oh right, Sis.

I found some really good stocks lately.

They're awesome. If you have some money, put it with me.

You'll definitely strike it rich.

Where would I have extra money?

All of my money is for Li Li's college fees.

I'm telling you,

stocks are not easy.

Don't put all of your money into it.

- Do you hear me? - Don't worry, don't worry.

Li Li, go call Qianren.

Mr. Liu has reserved a table at the restaurant for us today.

We have to take care of your uncle.

He's here, too?

What?

Nothing, nothing. I'll go call him.

Why didn't you knock?

I'm sorry. My mom said that Mr. Liu has reserved a table at the restaurant for us tonight.

They want us to dine together.

I know.

Wait.

Does your uncle know how to speculate stocks?

That's how he says it.

Don't put your college fees into stocks.

Don't get yourself into debt

and make it bothersome for others.

Why can't you say good words in a good way? Aren't you tired of it by now?

Are you going to eat with us?

I said that I knew.

Whatever.

Isn't that Daniel?

What should we do? Xuanxuan is really angry this time. What is Daniel going to do?

Xuanxuan led the school to win the championships last time.

I can't bear to see such a handsome face lose.

Me, too.

Let's go.

Don't mind him. He's just trying to provoke you.

Li Li, this is a battle between men.

I have to accept it.

I will accept the battle.
