from prison and given a new identity in order to protect him from the underworld

chieftains his testimony helped indict.

According to sources in the FBI, the information Jacoby gave on organized

crime dealt a severe setback to mob activities.

Authorities would not reveal any other information about the new life of Lou

Jacoby. However, they did say that everything possible had been done to

protect him from retaliation and they expected no problems.

Vice President Nixon is in Boston today to speak to the National Convention of

the American Legion.

Hey, wake up!

Thank you.

We'll take a ride at Highway 10 and go north.

About 40 miles outside of Palinville is a little lake, Miller's Lake.

I think we can dump him there. No one will see us.

We should get there just after daybreak.

And don't fall asleep.

Find a secluded place. We'll pull over, put some chains on him. That'll keep him

down for a long time.

Thank you.

on your glad rags, baby.

Brush up my blue suede shoes.

Tonight we're going out dancing.

We're going to lose our blues.

Everybody is hopping, hopping and popping, shimmying and shaking

to the break of day.

Debbie's got a crush on Ronnie.

Eddie's got a thing for Jane.

Sally's got it bad for the teacher, but dancing kills the pain.

Everybody's a-hopping, a-hopping and a-bopping, a-shimming and a-shaking

till the break of day.

Let it happen, Kathy.

Ronnie. Ronnie, get the clock, will ya?

Hey, come on. Get your blinds in gear.

You got just enough time to make it to the showers for all of how water's gone.

Hey, are you listening to me?

Uh-uh.

Okay, pal.

If you want to miss breakfast, that's your problem. But it's Friday, and you

know what? They always serve for breakfast on Friday.

On Friday, they always serve... Waffles.

Waffles.

Waffles.

Okay.

I'd just hate myself if I were to miss those precious waffles.

Well, isn't she upset this morning?

Are you believing all the coverage these UFOs have been getting lately?

The number of sightings is phenomenal.

They even make reference to several cases of people actually being picked up

and taken aboard these things.

Could you imagine?

Uh-huh.

And let me say this. It's the first time I'm picked up by something that's not

listed in the credits of War of the Worlds.

That's all over for the human race.

Like, finito.

I mean, I'd spill anything while looking down the barrel of a drawn ray gun.

Anything!

My sister's bra size.

Toilet schematics on a B-52.

Come on. Be serious.

I am.

Hey.

I hate your waffles.

Now we come to Jupiter.

Jupiter is a fast rotating planet, about once every 10 hours.

It gives off more radio rays than anything except the sun.

It has 12 bones, four of which move backwards, and there could be life on

it. However, the life would be low energy forms, plants, microorganisms,

nothing at all resembling the advanced variety that we have on Earth.

Well, I see our time is about up, so we'll take this up again next Tuesday.

Professor Bartholomew? Yes, Mr. McGuire.

Sir, there's been a lot in the media recently concerning UFOs, life from

other planets, that sort of thing.

I was just curious as to your position on this. Do you think it's possible that

a flying saucer might land or that one has already landed and that Martian-like

beings do exist?

Well, Mr.

McGuire... Let me put it to you this way.

The accounts thus far advanced, many of them are probable, but they're still a

little sketchy.

I personally would like to see more light shed on this subject, but until

such time as a more conclusive case is presented, I would like to reserve my

judgment. Yes, thank you. You're welcome.

Did you see that?

Then come here and look.

Those two want to touch antennae. Yeah, but what are you talking about?

Those two honeylots.

You're imagining things.

No, I'm not.

Wait here and watch.

Newton, wait a minute.

Hello, beautiful.

Drop dead.

Hey, how would you like to join us in a few coffee?

I don't know. I think we'll all fit.

I think we'll all fit.

Hey, that's pretty good.

I'll throw in a donut.

Close three?

Yes.

Why don't we?

Hey, my name is Eddie Newton.

And this is my roommate, Ronnie McGuire.

Hi. I'm Sally Baxter. This is Debbie Ray.

Your first year?

Uh-huh.

Different from high school.

Bet. Practically live at the library.

Hey, that's good.

But it's also bad.

Bad?

Were you aware that it's a documented medical fact that if you study too long

or too hard, you'll actually get a mental block at exam time?

You're kidding!

No joke. No, I'm serious.

Hey, what you girls need is a little relaxation.

You know, a retreat from the old book grind.

Yeah.

You got any classes tomorrow?

No.

Well, great.

I know of a little lake not too far from here. The four of us could go swimming,

you know, pack a little lunch, and do it up right.

Sounds great.

Debbie? Fine.

Well, gentlemen, a body doesn't just vanish into thin air.

I want you out there hunting.

And that doesn't mean cruising around looking at chicks.

Get out there and stir up something. Dig around.

You're supposed to be professionals. Why don't you act like it?

Now, that's all.

I don't want to see either one of you again until you get a lead. Understand?

Sergeant. Yeah?

You're trying my patience.

How's that?

Well, for one, you haven't come up with any details.

And two, you make a lousy cup of coffee.

Any regrets about accepting that date for tomorrow afternoon?

No. Except I feel a bit guilty about saying we didn't have any afternoon

classes.

What have you got up your sleeve?

I've lined up a couple of girls to stay here for us when they call roll

tomorrow.

I don't believe you.

Hey,

you know what? What?

I think Eddie's kind of cute.

I think I'm going to like that character.

But remember, you have to watch out for those upperclassmen. Oh, I know that.

So just act nice.

Be yourself. And don't make any sudden moves.

We don't want to scare these two off right away.

Look, just let me take the initiative when we first get there, and I'll have

you sitting pretty in no time.

Yeah, sure, Eddie.

Hey, guess what's so interesting out the window, anyway?

Hey, you can't see the Chi Omega girls in dressing, can you? No, Eddie, you

can't.

As a matter of fact, I was looking for something a little more significant than

that. What could be more significant than that?

UFOs, my boy, UFOs.

UFOs. Yeah, that's right.

I've been holding my own little vigil every night.

You know, I think there may be something to those things.

Although I've yet to spot one myself.

Well, of course you've yet to spot one.

What do you think, they're gonna come down with horns honking and Saturn

airways emblazoned on the side?

Come on now, get to bed.

You need all the energy you got tomorrow.

Goodnight, honey.

I like card draw.

I can't hear silly games.

You're a winner, ain't you?

I'll open.

Come in.

And the dealer stands back.

See that?

I love you.

Yeah?

Alright, everything's been quiet.

What?

Yeah, he's here.

Did you look at my card?

Yeah, yeah.

I promise.

Turn it ready.

Put your head up.

I'm sorry.

These two as soon as you can. Let me know what you come up with.

Yes, sir.

Mike, what's this look like to you?

It's hard to tell, Larry.

Everything adds up.

Almost.

Obviously, the struggle took place.

Several shots were fired, but you can count the bullet holes all over the

place.

Look at that door.

One thing has me puzzled, though.

What's that?

It's right here.

It appears to be slime of some sort.

Very nervous.

The question is... What?

I've got the lab boys working on it now. It should prove interesting.

Bobby? Yes, sir?

Hit a shot of this, will you?

Yes, sir.

I swear they're both insane.

But they do make a nice couple. Yeah, they do.

Which is surprising, considering Eddie.

Come on.

I just don't know why boys take the time to think up silly things like that.

Why can't they just come out and say what they mean to say?

You know, it's hard sometimes.

But I am glad you came today.

And yes, I meant that.

Let me compliment you, my dear, on your culinary dexterity.

Thank you, Edward.

Of course, it is hard to screw up a chicken salad sandwich.

Hey,

uh, I think we'll go for a walk now to digest our meal.

See ya.

I thought you wanted to go for a swim, so let's swim!

You alright?

Yes, I'm fine.

Look at this!

Ronnie!

Show you something show me what come here and you'll find out

Who knows it's probably discovered a new bird he thinks out of

on this Have you ever seen anything like

It sure is pretty though Yeah, but look at

it I wonder if it's a precious stone

I wonder if Ronnie would know anything.

Yes, Eddie, what is it now?

Take a look at this.

This is weird looking.

Where'd you find it?

Right here.

Look, there's pieces of it all over the place.

I can't say that I've ever seen anything like it before.

I'll tell you what.

Let's take these back and show them to Professor Bartholomew. Maybe he'll know

what they are.

Good idea.

It's getting late. We better start back now.

Well, good afternoon, gentlemen. Mr.

McGuire and Mr.

Newton, I believe. Yes, sir. Yes, sir. We're sorry to bother you. I know you've

got a thousand things to do, but... No, no, no bother. What can I do for you?

Well, Eddie and I were out swimming at Miller's Lake this afternoon, and we

found some very unusual rock specimens.

We thought maybe since you're an authority on geology, you'd like to see

some of them, and maybe you can tell us what they are.

Eddie, show them the rock.

Hmm.

It's an interesting rock.

It looks a little bit like turquoise, doesn't it? Yes, sir. That's what I

thought at first, too. But as I was pointing out to Ronald here earlier, if

you look a bit closer, it's really nothing like it at all.

I know that.

Besides, we must stop to consider that turquoise is not found in this region.

Where did you find it?

Miller's Lake.

If we went up there tomorrow afternoon, would you be good enough to show me

exactly where this rock was spotted?

Yes, sir. Sure.

Good. Then I'll meet you here tomorrow afternoon, say, 1 o'clock.

Perfect. Fine.

Thank you, gentlemen, for dropping by.

Thank you.

We'll see you tomorrow afternoon.

Right.

Nice rock.

Today sure was a great day to spend at the lake, wasn't it?

It sure was.

And those chicken salad sandwiches you made were really good.

Thank you. Eddie sure gave me a hard enough time at bathroom, though.

Hello?

No, we haven't forgotten.

Yes, we'll both be there.

No, we haven't chickened out.

All right.

Goodbye.

Who was that?

That was Miss Abigail Riley.

She called to remind us that Chi Omega Initiation is less than a week away.

Oh, brothers, if we didn't know.

And are we still game?

Although I must admit, I am beginning to have second thoughts.

How come?

Oh, I don't know.

I can't say that spending the night in some creepy old Victorian mansion that's

reputed to be haunted is my idea of one swinging evening.

Oh, come on. It'll be fun.

Besides, we'll have at least ten other girls' company.

I know.

That's what scares me.

Is this the spot?

No, sir. It's a little bit further down the lake.

It's kind of steep to go down this way, so why don't we take that path through

the trees?

Sorry.

It's right down here.

This is it. This is it. It's right over here.

Pretty rough terrain for an old phone.

See? I'm very good at this sort of thing.

But this is it, Professor.

This is the exact spot.

Yeah, I know. It looks sharp. This may be it, all right.

Watch your step there. Hang on.

Yeah, I got it now.

See, look.

There's pieces of the rock all over.

Yeah.

Hold my coat.

What are you doing, Professor?

I'm going to wade right out there.

Explore around a little bit. My instinct tells me it's right out there.

Well, look, there's no reason why you should have to do that. I mean, after

all, we brought you out here.

Eddie and I'll go in the water for you, and you can kind of just guide us

around. Good idea. Good.

Newton, don't just sit there. Take your shirt off.

This way?

In there.

Oh, it's cold.

Someplace.

Feel anything?

Hey, I think I feel something.

What did you lads find?

I'm not sure, Professor.

It's something large.

It's right underneath us. Eddie and I'll try to lift it out.

You got it?

What in

the

world? No, gentlemen, not of this world. I give you the mother stone of the

fragments you brought me.

And besides that, what you're holding right there is hopefully a true

meteorite. A meteorite?

Right. Of course, I have to make a few more tests on the thing, but Mr.

McGuire, I think you can safely say now that you have got your UFO.

Wow! Of a sort.

Put it up here on the shore so I can examine it a little closer.

I've heard of rock hounds, but...

Shut up, Newton, and keep lifting.

It's a little heavier than I expected.

I'm sure it was, but the toughest part, we still have to go. We've got to get

this thing into the car.

Thank you.

Ladies and gentlemen, Eddie Newton, star forward, has the rebound. Will he go for

a layup in these last crucial seconds or go for one of his now famous half-court

swishers? Ladies and gentlemen, I believe he's going to shoot. And he

does! It's on!

Eddie Newton again brings his team to victory.

Where have you been?

Hey, if you think you're copying off of me tomorrow, forget it.

Hey, I meant to get here sooner, really. Uh-huh. Who won the ball game?

Hey, I wasn't shooting tonight.

I was busy working on a piece of commissioned jewelry.

Commissioned? Now what have you gotten yourself into? Sit tight, sit tight. I

want you to feast your tired eyeballs on this.

Hey.

That is good looking.

Isn't that stone a chunk of the meteorite? Yeah.

I saved a piece for myself.

I had Maxwell down on the second floor make a casing for it.

It's gonna be a token of my affection to my woman.

When I present this to her, I'm gonna hold her in tight and I'm gonna say that

because of the stone, there isn't another necklace like it in the world.

So it's like you, baby.

One of a kind.

Oh, Newton, you rogue!

Oh, Newton, you sickie.

Lord, I know I promised I was gonna quit drinking.

Just one more for the road.

Thank you.

No, sir. Can't say exactly who or what it was, but you people best hurry over

here and... What, sir?

Were there more than one?

I don't think so.

All right, now let's get this straight one more time.

You shoot at a guy three or four times, and he doesn't fall down.

Now... What kind of explanation is this?

Mike.

Well, you must be Professor Bartholomew. How are you, sir? Yes, I am, but... I'm

Mike Kelly. How are you? I'm sorry to get you out this time of night, sir, but

as you can see, we're going to need your help with some facts.

Professor, what was in here that would cause a person to... It wasn't a person.

We'll determine that later.

That would cause a person to not only break in, but to jump three stories to

get out of here.

Nothing that I can think of.

The meteorite. The meteorite! The what?

It's gone.

The one I was conducting the experiments on. It was right here on the table.

I don't quite follow you. Well, you see, recently a pair of my students showed me

some metallic stones that they had picked up up around Miller's Lake. And

upon investigation, I found a huge object in the water which later on

turned out to be a true meteorite.

And I was conducting experiments to find out the exact species and possibly even

the origin.

What precisely is a meteorite?

Oh, well, to put it as simply as I can, it's a meteor that has made its way

through the Earth's atmosphere and struck her surface.

Here, I'll show you a picture of it. This will give you a better idea.

Now, a meteorite...

Or I should say a meteor is a stone and metal, or both, that have been

possibly ejected from a comet, or perhaps produced by a collision of

asteroids. You see, we know that asteroids in the past have collided by

the debris that we still see nowadays, and sometimes these fragments are

deflected by Mars, the fall of the Earth, as meteorites. How often is that?

Oh, you might say maybe two.

Three, four times an object of 20 pounds or over will fall during the course of a

day. How much did this one weigh? Oh, this one was between 40 and 50 pounds.

Really? It was a big one.

How did you know it was a true meteorite? Well, by the metal. You see,

some meteorites now, they're simply stony, crusted, well, just black crust,

and then the others are more metallic.

Some of them are metallic, and it's a fusion.

or an alloy, I should say, of nickel and iron.

As a matter of fact, the iron eventually becomes like a nickel steel, which is

something that would never happen naturally on Earth, and it has never

been investigated or imitated by industry.

That's very interesting, Professor.

The question is, who would want a 50-pound meteorite, and for what

purpose? Maybe somebody would want it for a paperweight.

Oh, my God.

Which leads us to this.

Hey, wait a minute. Isn't that that same stuff that was found in that warehouse

where the two guys were killed? Yes, it was.

Now, our lab boys have run a test and have come up with absolutely nothing.

They claim it's not cataloged, that its components have never been studied

before. Nevertheless, there's a direct correlation between that case and this.

The same destruction of property, same traces of slime at the scene, and the

same factor of the suspect being able to escape even though being fired on. And

to top matters off now, a damn meteorite.

Well...

It's not going to be easy disguising a 50-pound.

We'll get him.

Sal.

I just about given up on you. I'm so sorry. I didn't think that stupid

decorations committee meeting was ever gonna end.

How's your fine arts project coming?

Slow. I'm swamped.

That's beautiful.

Where did you get it?

From, of all people, Eddie.

Eddie?

I just couldn't believe it. Wasn't that sweet of him?

Uh-huh.

What type of stone is that?

I don't know.

It was a piece of one of those rocks Eddie discovered out by the lake the

other day. Remember?

Yeah. Well, anyway, those rocks were a part of a meteorite that hit by the

lake. No kidding.

Sure is beautiful.

Hey, listen.

Anytime you want to wear it, you're welcome to it. Don't even bother to ask.

Just help yourself.

No, really, I couldn't.

What do you mean you couldn't? I'm wearing half your clothes as it is now.

Besides... You know, I think it would look swanky with your new green outfit.

I am tempted.

It's so pretty, it's irresistible.

Let's get it real

Wow,

I haven't had a workout like that since Saturday night. Who was she? Your

sister.

Hey, speaking of Saturday night, this weekend the Chi Omega girls are having

their initiation, which involves Debbie and Sally.

And they're spending the night, get this, in the haunted mansion down on

South Street. No lie?

Come on.

You'd be hard-pressed to get even me to do that.

Well, you're practically going to.

Newton, what are you talking about?

Okay, look, everybody's heard about all those ghost tales surrounding that

place.

You know about that family in the 1800s, when the whole family goes mysteriously

insane, and the wife supposedly is in the halls carrying her head?

Well, don't you guys see what a beautiful opportunity this is?

For what?

Look, I figure...

We plan a raid on the place at midnight.

I'm for a raid, all right. Let's make it on panties. You're as bad as he is.

Okay, look.

I figure... Hey,

what's eating at your wisdom?

I was just thinking about the girl spending the night in that old house.

That place has been abandoned a long time. Some of the floors might be rotten

or weak.

Relax. Nothing's gonna happen.

Look, let's just run by there and poke around for a while.

Okay. I think you're wasting your time.

This place is creepy even in the daytime.

For sure.

Maybe we should have brought some wooden stakes and crosses.

Yeah, this place looks like the dorms on weekends.

These people really need to talk to their help.

but this place is really spooky at night.

Hey.

Hey, look at this neat clock.

Let's take it. Eddie, leave it alone.

All this stuff still belongs to somebody.

I still can't believe we haven't found any old muscatel bottles.

I wonder why people always think of these old houses as being haunted.

They're just old.

And this one's in pretty good shape.

I told you, we just didn't have anything to worry about.

Yeah.

I guess you're right.

It figures.

Case of a boat snatcher strikes again.

Eddie?

Eddie?

Eddie, get down!

A police car just drove by.

Uh-oh.

The cops are tailoring us. Come off it, man. We gotta clear out of here. Okay,

let's hoof it.

You cover me.

Mm-hmm.

Yeah, sure, baby.

But a little less chatter, okay?

Oh,

and take me out.

Hey, turn loose a second, will you?

Hey, turn loose.

Eddie, I'm ready.

Why not?

I'm gonna go to the bathroom.

No, it can't.

Can't it wait?

No, it...

Come on.

Sally, I'm going to need you as a backup.

Come on.

Who's in charge here?

The sergeant.

Call out the Marines!

What? They're trying to bring some of those anti-tank guns they have.

Just hold it. Let's just hold it.

Let's see. Some of those big, mean dogs.

Just a minute. Just settle down.

Settle down. No, wait a second. There isn't time.

Don't you see? We haven't got enough time. That thing's still loose out

there. Still out there loose?

Miss, let's get this straight, please.

Are the both of you on some kind of... No, sir!

We just saw some thing out on Miller's Lake.

Thing? What kind of thing?

I don't know exactly.

He wasn't human. I know that for sure.

That son of a bitch, he stood as tall as a skyscraper. And when I saw those

flames shoot out...

and get straight with a few facts we have.

Look, officer, I know this all sounds crazy, but I'm telling you, it's what we

saw. It was a creature of some kind, like...

This thing, this... Did it mention where he was from or where he was going?

Listen, Dick Tracy!

That thing tried to kill us!

All right, hot rod. Just relax.

Hey, Mike, I've got a young couple out here I think you're going to enjoy

talking to.

What do we got for them?

Just routine.

Space monster on the loose.

Come on, Frank, I'm busy.

I've got a million and one things to do. I'm serious. That's their story.

I'm curious, though. Suppose we corner the monster.

Do we still have to read him his rights? And who speaks monster around here?

This way, please.

Well?

I'll tell you, I can certainly understand people's reluctance to accept

a story like that.

Although I do believe you did see or experience something.

Now, whatever that something was, it'd be hard to pinpoint.

First thing in the morning out.

May I ask where you got that necklace?

It was a present from Andy.

Did you buy it somewhere?

No, sir.

It's part of a foreign stone.

A meteorite, to be exact.

A meteorite?

This was my hunch.

Do you know Professor Bartholomew?

Why, yeah. He's one of my profs.

Why? I met him the other night after your lab building was broken into.

That stolen meteorite, are you one of the boys that helped him find it?

Yes, sir. Me and my friend Ronnie. Can you think of any reason anyone would

want it?

No.

I don't believe it contains any precious metal or anything.

It was found out at Miller's Lake, right?

Right.

Hmm.

I'll follow up on this.

If this happens again, I want you to call me first thing.

You got it?

Now, I want you to get this young lady back to the dorm before she gets locked

out for the night.

Yeah.

Yeah.

On second thought, when the monster's cornered, read him his rights.

Ron! Ron, wake up! I gotta tell you something!

I swear to God, you better be careful or you're gonna lose a roommate tonight.

Oh, believe me, pal, you almost did lose a roommate tonight.

What?

It's happened.

It's finally happened.

They're here. They've landed.

Oh, my God. Who is it? Russia?

No.

China? No.

Mexico? The Martians.

The Martians.

Okay.

Run it by me.

Well, Sally and I were parked down at Miller's Lake. Oh.

You know, just listening to music, just discussing term papers, and all of the

sudden I saw one.

It was at the water's edge. It was probably filling up canteens or

something. On big Ronnie Mc...

Keith called it like a pygmy. Yeah, he was probably a bunch of guys from across

campus playing a prank, that's all. That's what I thought at first, too,

when I challenged him. I said, you know, see here, this has gone far enough.

And if you don't think I mean business, just come forward.

And?

That's when he lifted up the car by the front bumper.

Did you report it?

Yeah. I thought I was going to blow a rod getting us there. What did the

police say?

Just the usual.

Oh, just look into it.

Yeah, I don't know what to think. Look, for now, let's get some sleep. We'll

talk about it tomorrow.

Sleep?

Sleep? How can you sleep at a time like this?

I never saw their

spaceship, but I'll bet you anything the whole countryside's littered with them.

Oh, give me a break.

What is this? Are we being invaded?

My phone has been ringing all morning. Yes, sir. Mothers are afraid to let

their children go to school.

Yes, sir.

Next thing you know, everyone will be carrying guns.

Yes, sir. Well, do you have the answer?

Yes, sir.

Oh, I mean, no, sir. No, sir is precisely right. Get me the police on

the phone and put me through to Chief Myers.

Yes, sir.

Edward Newton, sophomore, history major at CSC, related the following story late

last night to police authorities.

Huh.

Kids getting a college education.

Must be fairly level-headed.

Hey, the rest of the guys are on their way.

Hi, cutie.

Give Mike the wig so we can finish the head.

Get it on there straight. Hey, yeah.

Talk about electronic genius.

Hit the switch.

Beautiful.

Hey, when we get this mannequin inside of that haunted house tonight, talk

about the girls losing their heads.

Are you sure you don't mind if I wear your necklace tonight?

No, of course not.

It looks cute on you.

It does kind of compliment my eyes.

I wish Ronnie would give me something like this.

Oh, well.

Got your stuff packed?

Yep. You ready?

I guess.

I want you to take a look at these nails.

It took me a whole month to grow them, not to mention the time spent on

manicuring.

And surely they will all be chewed off by sunrise.

Hello?

Yes, we're all packed and ready.

Out front in about five minutes?

Okay, all right. We'll be there. Ah, bye-bye.

That was little Miss Let's Go-Go-Go, the ever-efficient Miss Abigail Riley.

She'll probably be the next social chairman.

Let's go. They're on their way.

A second thought.

Relax. You want Boris Karloff to think you're a fraidy cat?

Mm-hmm.

Tonight... You are all merely pledges. But those of you who live to see dawn

will have earned the title sister.

Anyone caught leaving the house, our observers are planted, will

automatically be dropped.

And don't take lightly the ghost stories you've heard about this place.

So good night, good luck, and we'll see you.

So good night, good luck, and see you in the morning.

So you live to see the dawn?

Don't worry, kid. That's all buildup.

Nothing's going to happen.

Besides, we got your lucky charm.

What's to worry?

I heard something downstairs.

Come on, don't say anything.

Hello? Is this Professor Bartholomew?

How are you, sir?

This is Mike Kelly down at police headquarters.

I hate to bother you at home, sir, but I've been running around something in my

mind that I can't quite get to jail.

I know this is going to sound a little crazy, but do you think, well, in

your professional opinion, that the meteorite or even pieces of it might be

or act as an energy source?

What's that?

Well,

that's the part hard to comprehend.

Well, perhaps an auxiliary force that draws its strength from it.

That auxiliary force either being intangible, such as a ball of light, or

taking on the shape or appearance of a mobile mass or being?

I don't know.

Maybe I've been up on this thing too long or concentrating too much.

There's got to be a correlation somewhere.

Yes, sir, that's right. Wherever the meteorite or even a piece of it was,

this monster everyone makes light of has been seen and tried to retrieve the

stone.

Right.

To date, the meteorite hasn't even been located.

Wherever the meteorite...

Or even a piece of it was.

Huh?

Nothing, Professor.

Look, can I get back to you? I think I might have uncovered something.

Thank you.

Larry, put a cruiser on hold and come here a minute.

What's up?

I'm fixing the hound dog something. I want you riding shotgun.

What do we got?

Well on that question things get just a little smoky You know that that goon

that's been running around scaring hell out everybody.

Well that thing that stole the professor's meteorite thing is right I

was just talking to the old boy and I Don't think we're dealing with anything

human I'll tell you more on the way over the college. But for right now, I

believe it to be a geological Gaseous

in that it's a huge, non-categorized being with basic human

body makeup.

Now, in the event that there's a code word that we need between us,

G

-Ga-Goo.

Sounds like baby talk to me.

We're trying to break it down in terms you could relate to, Larry.

Let's go.

Abigail, she's fainted.

Oh God, I think I wet my pants.

Maybe it's some of the sisters trying to scare us.

Yeah, or maybe some boys.

Well, go take a look then. Why me? Forget it.

All right then, we'll all go.

Terry, you stay here and watch Abigail. Come on.

Why on earth did you frighten us like that?

We were just having some fun.

Oh, some fun.

You practically frightened us half to death, not to mention making Dear Abby

faint.

Hey, would anyone like some wine?

You better believe it.

Hey, great. Yeah, I've got some in the car.

Wait here, and I'll be right back.

Hey Andy!

That's the way I see it.

That sounds crazy. I know.

I'm riding a hunch, and I got to see the front.

Mm-hmm.

Yeah. I figure it came down from the north.

Maybe over there. It hit Miller's lake. Mm-hmm.

Hard to believe no one saw it hit.

Yeah. Must have been late.

Mm-hmm.

After midnight.

Yeah. Mm-hmm.

Am I getting the idea you're not buying this?

Oh, no.

Not at all, Mike. It's...

Like you say, it might sound crazy to some people, but you're playing the

hunch, and you've got to see it through. Yeah, I know what I said, Sergeant.

Hey, watch it, Larry.

Damn.

Sorry, Sally isn't here.

She's, uh... Well, come on, where is she? Look, this is very important,

besides being a police matter.

Yes, sir.

Well, you see, I wasn't supposed to tell anyone, especially mothers and people

like that.

Sally and a bunch of the other girls are spending the night in what we call the

haunted house down on South Street. How long have they been gone?

A couple of hours. Look, do you remember, did this Baxter girl have on a

pendant, you know, a necklace thing with a stone?

No, I wasn't... All right, thank you.

Don't you think we should get out of the bedroom and join the others?

Why?

Don't you like being alone with me?

Yes, but... It's so harsh there.

He's fat!

He's coming to get me!

The monster!

The monster down at the lake! He's downstairs right now!

We've got to get out of here!

Don't you think you've scared us enough? That cheap trick won't work!

He'll haunt us! He'll haunt us! We've got to get out of here now!

Sorry about scaring you tonight.

Forgive me?

Sure.

I'll always feel safe with your arms around me.

He's telling you the truth. There is something out there.

This is more than we can handle.

Go call a couple more units. We'll get a medical unit in here to help those kids

out. Hurry up. Right, Mike. Right.

Sergeant, we're going to fire when we hit it. Wait a minute now. Wait a

minute. You know he said that thing is dangerous.

Yep, but he might need some help.

What about those girls over there? We'll put them in the car. We'll get someone

to look after them.

Vance, this is Larry.

You better send some extra units over here to Morgan Avenue. We've got a lot

of trouble over here. We're going to need your gas, nets, anything else you

have.

with that gun in the neighborhood.

Listen, what are you doing coming from that way, Eddie?

Well, I just thought I'd circle through and round them up for you. Oh, you did,

did you?

They couldn't be more than a couple blocks away.

Where'd

they

go? I don't know.

Go this way.

That's him. He's locked himself in that whole theater across the street.

Come on, move these people back. Get them back.

All

right,

I've got this thing trapped in this theater over here, and I want you two

guys to position yourselves right over there.

Don't fire your weapons or do anything. I say so, you understand?

Did you bring a tear gas?

No, sir. Curtis from the first precinct. Very good. Let me know when he gets

here. Let's go.

What are they doing?

Why don't you just stay where you are?

Here comes the mayor.

Mayor's here. All right, that's all I need now. Well, think of something fast,

because here comes his aide.

Lieutenant Kelly?

Yes. Lieutenant Mike Kelly.

Yes. Mayor Taylor wants to see you immediately for an in-depth report on

the entire situation.

Get him out of my sight.

Good evening, ladies and gentlemen. Robert J. for Jack Cogdell from We're

There for You, Channel 2.

Tonight, I'm standing on a side street just off Granger Avenue.

To my right and beside me are small clusters of individuals in the grip of

the fear of something of bizarre proportions.

Just behind me is a deserted theater, a lone monument against the ravages of

time. But tonight, we're concerned for the new tenant of that building, whose

exact purpose and identity have not been pinpointed at this time. But let me

point out... Who in the hell is that?

That's Robert J.

Cogdell. Cogdell!

Get him out of here. Get him off camera.

With information from unusually reliable sources, and remember, this is a scooper

first. What's going on here? What is this? Hey, did you hear it from the

press? What's going on?

Yes, Lieutenant Kelly?

Yes, sir.

What have we got? It's Mike, right? Yes, sir.

I know you had a long talk with Chief Myers about this invasion scare. Well,

tonight it's finally come to a head.

Whatever it is, it's trapped in that old deserted building over there.

I'm afraid we're dealing with something that's very real, sir.

Something very unreal.

Am I to believe that there's something from outer space in there?

Or inhuman, or what?

Well, I don't think it's from outer space, but rather something or someone

controlled by a higher intelligence of...

A slave or a robot of some sort. A slave?

Well, I'm sorry I can't give you any more concrete answers than that, but

until we get this thing captured, we just have to wait.

That's all I need is a full-scale panic in this town.

What's your plan?

Well, we've got the place secured, surrounded.

Try tear gas first to force it out, then we'll try to wrestle it down with ropes

or that.

Ropes? What about guns? Have you got plenty of firepower?

Bullets don't stop it.

Bullets don't stop it.

I'm requesting the National Guard be put on hold. Now, wait a minute, Mayor. You

give us a shot at it. You said yourself you don't want to panic.

Now, you call out the National Guard, you're going to create a statewide

hysteria. I suppose you're right.

Well, looks like we're all set.

Let's go.

So good, you'll read about it in the morning paper.

Boy, that was some powerful tear gas.

Ruptured gas line for sure.

Apparently, whatever it was has been consumed by the fire.

And I guess it's just as well.

I don't know.

Maybe after the fire's out, we can poke around in the ashes and find something.

Something gives us a clue to where this thing came from.

Ladies and gentlemen, one moment please.

This bulletin has just been handed me from our news desk.

The body of Lou Jacoby, the gangland informant in last year's Kefauver

hearings, was found floating in Miller's Lake early today.

Reports had identified Jacoby as the man shot and thrown into a car 13 days ago

in front of the Jonquil Hotel.

Police said the body had been weighted down with chains and had apparently been

in the water for some time.

And now, back to music with this week's number one hit, Hoppin'.
