Hello, and welcome to Glyndebourne - a destination for opera lovers
from around the world, nestled in the heart of the South Downs.
I'm Katie Derham and we're here in the organ room,
which is where Glyndebourne's love affair with opera began.
But now, prepare to be transported
to the fantasy world of Mozart's The Magic Flute.
It was the last of the 22 operas that Mozart wrote
and it was premiered just two months before his death in 1791.
It was a huge hit then
and it has been recognised as one of his musical masterpieces.
The production you're about to see was filmed live
during the summer 2019 festival season,
and it's a brand-new production, here at Glyndebourne,
from the design and director team of Andrew Barbe and Renaud Doucet.
And in a twist from Mozart's original staging,
they've actually decided to set the action in a hotel.
So, settle back into your sofas and prepare to step into
the crazy and delightful world of Act One of Mozart's The Magic Flute.
