Narrator: It's wild weather of biblical proportions.

Woman: Stop raining! Holy [bleep]!

narrator: The survivalists must endure

hurricane-ravaged jungles in central america...

Aah!

...Category 4 storms

raging across the south...

It's raining like crazy.

Narrator: ...And plagues of relenting insects.

Ow, ow, ow, ow! Aah!

this hour, we'll sneak a peek at how the survivalists dealt

with some of the worst conditions imaginable.

[ bear growling ]

[ gasps ]

and we'll learn more about the men and women

who think they have the skills and strength

to take on this challenge.

Everything is washing away.

Narrator: It's a cataclysmic season...

[ animal growls ]

...Filled with close encounters.

two strangers will again try to survive 21 days

with no clothes, no food, and no water...

I want water.

...But in these new apocalyptic episodes...

This is the hardest thing I've ever done in my life.

deep in the remote tropics of mexico

looms the lacandon jungle of chiapas.

Survivalists leah and caesar

not only have to contend with the extreme jungle environment,

but many vicious predators are always hunting for prey.

Fearsome jaguars, massive boas,

and, worst of all, swarms of torturous pin-sized sand flies

known as chequistas that are only made worse...

[bleep] damn it!

Narrator: ...By the incessant rain.

To survive out here, caesar and leah hope to use

the many skills that were passed down to them.

Going in the jungle to take my clothes off

to meet a naked man.

My name is leah. I'm from dry prong, louisiana.

I am a mother, and married three-and-a-half years now.

I am a hunter.

I love to hunt squirrels, deer, rabbit.

I'm a crazy woman. I like to do wild things.

I flipped a truck.

This scar right here is a rite of passage in louisiana.

Everybody flips their truck. It's normal.

I wanted to take on this challenge

to prove to everybody

that I'm not this little, bitty girly-girl,

that I am a tomboy and I can survive

and I can push myself further than I have ever before.

Caesar: I sense a lot of spirits here,

and I plan to talk to them and hopefully be welcomed by them.

I'm a martial-arts instructor and a shaman.

You sending me your best wishes?

I hope so.

We lived in a tribal community.

My father taught me everything I know.

I'm great at making fire with a hand drill.

Finally have fire. Damn!

I'm able to trap game.

This is a way of life for me.

I want to feel that I am honoring my ancestors

in keeping their ways alive.

Narrator: Only a few days into their challenge,

they find themselves in desperate need of firewood.

Caesar and leah need to keep the fire going

to get through the chilly nights and keep the bugs at bay,

but making their way through the wet and slippery jungle

becomes a bigger challenge than they expected.

There's a big log.

We could just feed it in like that.

We don't even have to chop it up.

It's frickin' heavy.

Whoa. Is it even good?

narrator: From the incessant rain and bugs of the lacandon jungle

to the insufferable heat of brazil's sand dunes...

It is hot as hell.

...To hurricane-torn nicaragua and florida.

This place is devastated.

Frickin' battlefield out here.

...The conditions these survivalists go into

are more challenging than ever.

Look, I'm gonna pass out.

The worst can happen in an instant.

This is a medical evacuation.

It's miserable.

[ bird cries ]

narrator: In central nicaragua,

two complete strangers must enter

a hurricane-ravaged environment

and attempt to survive a devastated landscape.

In this environment, we just don't know what to expect.

A hurricane just destroyed everything.

Narrator: And they'll need every inch of will and skill to make it.

My name is leann, I'm from anchorage, alaska,

and I'm an accountant.

There's a saying in alaska,

"the men are men, and so are the women."

so, we can prove ourselves just as well as any man.

There is nothing that I'm afraid of.

I've been through two births. One almost killed me.

I have never tapped out in my life.

I am like the phoenix rising.

You can put me anywhere in the world,

and I will come out and burn it to the ground.

My name is lee, I live in blue ridge, texas,

and I'm in commercial roofing.

I'm married, with six kids.

Where's daddy going?

"naked and afraid"!

Think daddy's gonna make it?

Yeah.

My father was a mountain-man kind of guy,

and he taught me to survive off the land,

how to primitive hunt with a bow and arrow, make spears.

I want to make 21 days because I don't quit.

I never quit. I haven't quit on anybody in my life.

42 days, 68 days -- it doesn't matter.

You put me out there, I'm not leaving

unless you take me out in a body bag.

Narrator: The devastation the hurricane left behind

in the indio maíz jungle

has completely destroyed the tree canopy,

leaving nowhere for lee and leann to take cover

from the searing sun.

And because nicaragua is only 800 miles from the equator,

the sun's rays here are five times stronger

than in leann's native alaska.

Ahh!

Leann soon finds herself at the mercy

of the oppressive sun and heat.

[ birds chirping ]

the sun is starting to smelt my sunburn, and it hurts.

I've never had a sunburn this bad,

and it's a lot of pain.

Narrator: As part of the healing process,

pressure continues to build inside leann's sun blisters,

making every step more agonizing.

Avoiding more sun exposure

is the only way to prevent her blisters from rupturing.

The sunburn is splitting, so that's just causing agony.

And my ankles are, like, super swollen,

and that's the bug bites.

This is almost unbearable.

I can't take much more of this.

[ grunts ]

so, the sunburn on that side is popping open and drying out,

and it hurts.

And then, this up here

is starting to form blisters and popping,

and it's very painful.

Hopefully it's only for, like, another day,

'cause I can't take much more of that.

narrator: In the past, "naked and afraid" has sent survivalists

into brutal locations.

We are literally in the middle of nowhere.

Teal: This is one of those places where they say,

"if a tree falls and no one's around,

does it make a sound?"

narrator: But now...

Man: This place is hell.

Narrator: ...The challenge is more extreme than ever before,

and only the most skilled and determined

will make it out unscathed.

Break, you son of a bitch.

narrator: Once home to the mayan civilization,

mexico's yucatán jungle can be inhospitable,

even under the best of weather conditions.

It's known for its extreme humidity and sparse resources.

Survivalist steve and ava come in with one goal --

make it day 21 --

and they're banking on the fact

that they've got years of experience behind them.

I am ava from seattle,

and I'm a fashion producer and a wildlife conservationist.

I'm completely obsessed with being outside.

I'm constantly emerging myself in nature,

and people call me a wild child

because I live that same way wherever I am.

I grew up with a survivalist.

My father is a teacher in survival training,

and I feel like I've been around survival skills

and survival training my entire life.

Being able to do this

really proves to myself that I can do anything.

I'm a scuba instructor and a personal trainer from orlando.

I would describe myself as an adventurous,

outgoing, outdoorsy person.

I guarantee that I'm gonna be swinging through this jungle

like black tarzan.

I'm gonna thrive, not just survive.

Narrator: As they try

to make the suffocating yucatán jungle their home,

ava and steve are soon struggling

to find any sustenance,

digging up the roots in the sweltering heat

and trying to stay hydrated.

The extreme temperatures, hunger, and dehydration

soon take their toll on ava,

and her motor skills start to suffer.

[ softly ] can't talk.

Narrator: She becomes dizzy and disoriented.

Steven: You okay?

Yep, just got to break every once in a while.

Standing up, huh?

I just get light-headed real quick.

Ava: Definitely noticed some physical changes.

Um, consistently a little bit light-headed.

My whole body starts shaking violently,

and the blood drains from my head,

and today it's happened like three or four times.

[ exhales sharply ] geez.

If you feeling light-headed standing by the fire,

it's probably not the place you want to be.

Come on over and have a seat or something.

I will as soon as I can move.

Steven: If she doesn't get anything significant,

I got a feeling she's gonna be doing harm to her body

in the long run, so...

I'm gonna support her as best I can

and help her see her way through the 21-day challenge.

narrator: The survivalists in the new season of "naked and afraid"

must deal with the extreme elements.

[ thunder crashes ]

it pushes them to the very limit...

The weather is tortuous.

...Even as they struggle to find food and shelter...

I'm [bleep] starving.

Which means I need to eat really soon.

Man: Go on. Get back!

...And often, another challenge arises.

Teal: We're hearing noises.

Narrator: They're not the only ones who need to find food.

They have to share their habitat with apex predators.

I'm 6'5". That's a big bear.

in the treacherous mississippi bayou,

survivalists gabrielle and brian

have to reckon with aggressive wild hogs

and territorial black bears in the dead of night.

There it is.

-[ grunts loudly ] -I hear it.

[ rustling ]

it's walking up close.

[ animal growls ]

[ screams ] come on!

Oh, my god!

[ growls ]

get over here quickly!

Narrator: In northeastern brazil,

survivalists anthony and suzanne cross paths

with one of the deadliest snakes

to be found in central and south america --

the fer-de-lance.

It's a fast-moving killer

that can eject its venom from six feet away,

and it's responsible for more than half

of all the snake bites in brazil.

Suzanne: Do not get bit.

He's buzzing. Pissed already.

Holy crap, it's curled up in the center.

I need that hatchet.

Oh, yeah, it's off.

Snake -- it's what's for dinner.

Yay!

Narrator: Suzanne learns another valuable lesson in brazil --

it's not just snakes on the ground to watch out for.

There are also bees in the trees.

Ow, ow, ow, ow!

I don't know that we should have our shelter there.

narrator: The smoky mountains of tennessee have a long history

of mysterious appalachian legends and folklore,

and it has one of the most diverse ecosystems

in north america.

It also has one of largest populations of black bears

in the country.

[ bear roars ]

teal and jermaine are both experienced hunters,

and hope to tame the wild woods of tennessee.

They've spent weeks before

prepping for the challenge that awaits them.

Situations you don't want to find yourself in --

butt naked in a deciduous forest

probably would be right up there with the top five in my book.

My name's jermaine jackson.

I'm from ventura, california.

Ever since I was a cub scout, I've been taught skill sets.

I've been taught how to make fire.

I've been taught how to read the woods.

I grew up bow-hunting.

That's what I do --

or fishing or hunting every chance I get.

The misconception is that,

you know, african americans don't go camping,

don't get out in the wilderness,

and it's my pleasure to debunk that.

Teal: I can already feel kind of the chill.

Not really a fan of being cold, but I'm pretty excited.

I am from massachusetts,

and I'm a master sergeant in the united states air force.

I've been in the military for 15 years.

I can stand up with any man

to make sure that everything is accomplished --

everything from hunting to trapping to skinning animals.

Constructing fires that are set up

as suitable for the environment.

I think everybody has to snuggle.

Otherwise, you're gonna be really, really, really cold.

You snuggle or spoon, I'll bite your face off.

I'm running through all the skill sets in my mind right now.

What do you do in heavy rain? What do you do...

You know, how do you find dry wood?

you hear something? Yeah.

Narrator: As teal and jermaine navigate through the dense forest,

they know they are now in the path

of thousands of black bears.

Holy [bleep] it's a bear.

And to add to that,

a recent drought has depleted their food sources,

making the bears even more desperate for their next meal

and even more likely to cross paths with humans.

It's been going all the way around.

[ bear growls ]

and as the sun goes down,

the survivalists know that

the black bears are out there in the dark.

The 600-pound predators forage for food at night.

[ bear growls ]

[ gasps ]

hey, hey, hey!

Did you hear something?

No, it's more than gnarly. It's very [bleep] scary.

[ bear growling ]

I'm not a big fan of animals talking to us.

narrator: The mississippi bayou.

Here, bears are only one of the many creatures to be feared.

Its murky swamps are filled with blood-sucking mosquitos,

stealthy alligators, and six types of venomous snakes,

including the water moccasin,

which can stalk its prey both on land and in the water.

And the recent pattern of extreme weather

has not spared the bayou.

Heavy rains have inundated the area,

causing even more predators to enter the flooded swamp,

increasing the danger for any survivalists

who take on the dark waters of the bayou.

I'm gabrielle. I'm from westminster, maryland.

I'm a law-school graduate and a full-time mom.

My little boy, he's the light of my life.

I recently completed the 14-day fan challenge.

21 days is a lot different than 14.

This is a much different environment than south africa.

It's gonna present a whole-new set of challenges.

I'm just about as nervous for this one

as I was for the last one.

with the torrential downpours come plagues of insects,

small things that constantly attack the survivalists.

Narrator: The stagnant waters are the perfect breeding ground

for mosquitoes in the drought-stricken areas.

Rotting carcasses bring swarms of bugs.

Man: I'm covered in flies, eating my sores.

Narrator: The tiniest pests

can challenge the strongest of spirits.

in central florida lies the sweltering seminole forest,

where murky swamps hide alligators

that can grow up to 14 feet

and can bite down with the force of 3,000 pounds,

but an even bigger threat looms over the region.

An active hurricane season, which is particularly dangerous

in this flood-prone area of florida.

It threatens to displace the many predators

and send the insect population soaring.

before survivalists duke and amal entered the forest,

they did their best to prepare for the worst.

I'm excited to get to work, start surviving.

I'm a wilderness guy and a bird-and-plant biologist.

My strongest survival skills are shelter building,

animal tracking, and fire making.

I've done a lot of, like, my own hiking, camping,

and rock-climbing.

Taken up an interest in primitive stuff.

Building a figure for a dead-fall trap.

Call it whatever you want --

an early mid-life crisis --

but by going through this challenge,

I want to apply all the skills and knowledge that I have

to see if it can help me be a survivalist.

I am originally from iraq, but right now,

I am living in cedar rapids, iowa.

I have three children,

and I'm a stay-at-home mom.

I am very familiar with being hungry, being thirsty.

When I was about 8 years old,

my family and I survived in the desert

on our own for almost two years.

My brother, when I was younger,

I'd seen him make one of these in iraq

to catch some dinner for us,

and that is why this is one of my favorite ways...

I know how to start a fire very easily.

The rock method --

where you rub two rocks together, basically,

until you get a spark going.

One of the main reasons why I'm doing this challenge is,

I have a little girl who thinks I can

conquer the world if I try,

and I want to prove to her that you can.

narrator: As they enter the alligator-

and snake-infested swamps of florida,

duke and amal have a lot to worry about

as predators and looming storms threaten their survival,

but duke soon finds out that sometimes,

it's the smallest thing that delivers the biggest sting.

[ insects buzzing ]

Yellowjackets, man.

Ooh, I just got stung on my wanker.

[ groans ]

Getting stung point-blank on your underjunk

by a yellowjacket --

it's probably one of the least joyful things

I've ever experienced.

Never gotten stung on my yenis.

Why did you have to go right for the jewels?

It had so many other places to sting me.

Yet it chose to sting me

right at the end of the business-line.

I am soaking my junk in the creek here.

It's to combat the swelling that's happening.

The one time you want shrinkage.

Oh, my god. My genitals.

My male chassis gear is just swollen beyond

anything that should ever look healthy.

narrator: Central brazil is rife with its own stinging insects.

They flourish on a desolate stretch

of hot wind-swept savannas,

crawling with venomous rattlesnakes.

Hot, dry, and unforgiving --

it's one of the harshest places on the planet.

And the mosquitoes and horseflies are relentless.

It's a hellish environment

that only the most prepared and confident survivalists

can take on.

I'm gary.

I'm from redondo beach, california,

and I'm an environmentalist

which includes me being a teacher of children...

[ children scream ]

...A nature guide, and a man who saves animals.

Isn't that awesome?

I'm carrying a message,

and that message is "consume as little as possible"

because if every single human on earth did that today

the planet would be cleaner by tomorrow.

I eat very good from this dumpster.

This is the life of a minimalist.

I've been training for this most of my life,

and the universe is giving me this.

It is nothing like wisconsin.

I think my greatest survivalist skill

is my mind set, my will, and determination.

I've been through so many different obstacles in life,

like poverty.

I had a very neglectful and abusive childhood,

so I'm here to be a living testimony

that no matter how bad things get in life,

you can always overcome it.

My fire-making and my shelter-making skills

will definitely help me in this challenge.

the unrelenting heat and onslaught of insects

can break down a survivalist,

both physically and mentally.

often comes down to how well

the survivalists can work together.

teamwork can make the difference between success and failure.

in northeastern brazil,

survivalists suzanne and anthony

have to take on harsh terrain,

steep cliffs,

and searing daytime temperatures

that plummet as soon as the sun sets.

And the region's wildlife is no less vicious.

In the trees are swarms of wasps

that can sting their victims repeatedly

and can send them into anaphylactic shock.

But for suzanne and anthony,

one of their first challenges

is a fundamental difference in how to survive.

anthony: The temperatures drop crazy out here at night.

Yeah, it was cold, but we didn't have any bugs

while we were sleeping.

We're gonna have to find something

that works better than this

and something warmer than this.

I would like to make some fish traps

and worry about food.

My plan is shelter absolutely first.

So you're gonna take a walk? You're gonna look?

Mm-hmm.

But I'm still gonna call this home

unless convinced otherwise.

Anthony: A good shelter is very important.

She doesn't believe so, but I do.

Suzanne: I believe that he thought

we'd have a really awesome shelter.

And the concept that we're sleeping on the ground

is not acceptable to him,

even though it feels fine, so...

Anthony: This flat clearing takes us off the beach,

it's shaded so we're not baking,

I can use the trees.

If I clear all this, it's a whole lot of open space.

I actually prefer where we were.

I feel like there's gonna be more bug problem here.

And all these bugs that are around us right now.

Anthony: Suzanna -- she's head-strong.

that we're maximizing all of our time.

Like, I don't want to stop and do too much stuff

that's gonna take away from water.

Duke and amal are now directly in its path.
