Original subtitles

[bleep]

So I cut into my knuckle, cutting into some wood.

[grunts]

[Terra] Go away.

[louder] Go away.

Get outta here.

Go away!

[Jamie speaking]

[sobs]

[thunder rumbles]

[Jamie speaking]

So cold.

[Jamie] I went and checked my fish trap...

Look at the size of that.

...and found a nice catfish in it.

Here we go.

I cooked it and it was amazing.

Honestly, it was so nice.

But in the process of retrieving the catfish,

my fish trap broke.

So I'm gonna have to make a new one.

So that's what I'm gonna do now.

Lovely sunshine.

I'm loving this weather.

I'm doing this to get redemption from what happened in Peru.

It's great to have a second chance

and it's great to get back into the jungle,

and give it my best shot, which I'm doing.

I'm trying my absolute hardest.

This uh...

It's a decent size as well.

So I'm gonna take that back to camp.

And when my future kids watch this,

and they see me going through a struggle after what happened to me in Peru,

hopefully that gives them some sort strength and encouragement

to keep on going, no matter what circumstances.

This is where the fish is gonna go in.

A few different rocks here that I'm gonna try, plug it in with.

[narrator] This trap works by allowing fish to swim into the narrow hollow log,

where they become stuck because fish cannot swim backwards.

[Jamie] I've seen one that I can fit in it.

Let's see, [bleep] catch some fish with this.

[bleep] me, man.

Mosquitoes are so bad today.

[Jamie sighs]

I'm really positive about the next few days leading up to extraction.

And I'm hoping I can get myself some more food...

...and more energy for the journey.

I wanna go check those lines.

You know, when I caught that big fish I was like, "Yay!"

Oh, [bleep].

The catfish.

You don't even know how happy I am to have this fish.

That fish made me hungry for more,

and I'd rather not wait long for another big meal.

Definitely not seven days.

I really want to eat today.

I do believe, like, the energy you put out is oftentimes what you get back.

So I'm trying to approach fishing by just being present

and just seeing what happens without attachment.

That line is very taut.

And my wooden bobber is gone.

Think I got some action on that line.

Oh, [bleep], I was not expecting that.

Turtle, wow. [sighs]

[laughs]

What?

Thank you, ancestors.

Y'all sure done delivered today.

Really glad that I put in this second line here...

...because, sure enough, that was the line that delivered.

I really wasn't expecting that.

Now I'm gonna cook this up

and experience turtle for the first time.

Hopefully, um, it tastes delicious.

Mr. Turtle, thank you for your living.

Thank you for your dying and for nourishing me.

All right.

Let's see what's in here.

I see a lot of clear, beautiful looking meat.

This turtle is like a gift.

Feels about five to seven pounds of meat.

Turtle meat.

I don't know what it's gonna taste like.

Maybe like rabbit.

Think it's ready now.

I am ready to eat this turtle!

It's not bad. I really like it.

A good amount of fat in here,

so it's a really balanced flavor.

[smacks lips] So good.

Tastes like a cross between, I'd say,

a chicken and goat meat.

It's very nourishing, very filling.

Had a beautiful, amazing turtle stew.

I have a lot more energy and vitality to greet tomorrow.

I'll continue to fish and get my food

all the way to day 21.

[Kaila] I feel terrible.

I am sick after eating the snake.

I got my protein.

This should be good, I cooked it for a really long time.

[chuckles]

My body just couldn't process it.

When I was in Colombia, I had a couple of snakes

and I got pretty sick.

So I think it's my body doesn't like snake.

My stomach hurts so bad.

And all I can think is how I just want my mom to, like...

...just bring me some ginger ale and saltines.

[laughs sadly]

[Kaila behind camera] This is my mom and dad.

I've watched my mom deteriorate over the last six years with Alzheimer's.

That's been a struggle for me.

Sometimes I'll go over and she has no idea who I am.

Are you guys excited about me leaving?

Thoughts? Feelings?

I feel fine.

[women laughing]

The one good thing about it is...

She doesn't even know where you're going,

so it doesn't matter.

[Kaila laughing] Exactly.

It's such a weird thing to, like, see and go through.

You know, my mom was always so, like, fiercely independent.

She didn't take [bleep] from anybody.

She was such a badass.

My mom was, is... She is the coolest woman ever.

And see, like, I'm talking about her like she's dead.

It's like the smallest thing will just like...

...make me think of it.

Just like having a stomachache.

Even though I am out here alone, physically,

I am not out here alone emotionally,

'cause I have my family motivating me to get to the end.

You look out there by that brown rock in the water,

you'll see something black.

And it keeps kinda going under and then coming back up,

and going back under and coming back up.

I wouldn't mind going out there and seeing what it is.

Best case scenario, it's, uh, some kind of eel or fish or something

that hangs around while I slowly get to it.

I'm trying to do anything I can to get some protein.

I wish I could say that it's been just smooth sailing, but it's been far from.

[Terra speaking]

Damn. Damn.

It's nothing but some river grass that has been stuck on a rock.

This has been, like, the jungle that does not want me here.

[hissing]

Wow, that is a fer-de-lance.

This snake is about 100 feet from where I sleep.

Oh, my God.

Damn it.

That is a fer-de-lance.

That is a baby fer-de-lance.

This snake is about 100 feet from where I sleep.

You can't live here.

Sorry, buddy.

That was a little close for comfort.

I could've gotten bit.

And babies don't just let things go,

you know, babies throw all the venom they can out.

All it takes is one little fang to take you out completely.

I won't even make it out of the challenge if it's not treated in time.

Took you out of life.

You get bit and it's over.

It's... There's nothing you can do about it.

I mean, it's got [bleep] some meat on it.

Might be able to use it for fish bait.

I'm unraveling some paracord...

...to try and make a fishing line right now.

I'm trying to do anything I can to get some protein in myself,

and this seems like a good way to at least try.

I need to make some kind of hook.

A gorge hook is a type of carved hook.

When the fish takes it in,

they'd swallow the whole hook, basically goes sideways.

So you're pulling the fish in...

...by its gut, not by its face.

I wanna tie a float to the line.

That way, if anything does take it,

I can see if it's just floating on the top of the water

or doing something.

I'm going to set it and forget it.

This is the longest I've ever been without eating, ever.

And, uh, it has taken a major, major toll on me.

I don't wanna quit this challenge just because I'm hungry.

So, please, let me eat.

I had quite the night.

[groans]

[sighs]

It's going to pass.

And my first piece of sun...

...in a long time.

[sighs]

I feel beat up, like, really beat up.

I probably slept four hours over the last three days.

I am, like, grateful...

...for the sun.

Oh, it's like a warm blanket over me.

Still looking for food now.

Food's the main goal.

I was really hoping to kind of get the big kill

but the reality is that the rain hasn't helped my cause.

The animals have a variety of watering hole options,

because there's water everywhere.

So I don't have the upper hand or the advantage of them

having to come to one watering source so I can hunt them exclusively.

Uh, I have to diversify my menu options out here if I'm gonna make it.

This hole looks very active.

There's no cobwebs covering it.

There's, like, fresh dirt.

You can just tell it's... it's definitely being used actively.

Probably my best odds of eating, to be honest.

I'm gonna try making some cordage.

Set up a snare and hopefully catch something.

The one thing that I really focus on in survival

is adapting to what my environment is giving me.

You can't keep trying the same thing over and over again.

Use the mopane bark,

you get three strands and you just weave it,

and the key being the end.

You leave a single strand and this is what makes your noose.

And the idea is that an animal goes through here,

and it cinches down and traps them.

If this snare works,

I can get myself that small rodent, that small mammal.

I'll be set for the end.

A good sized animal like that will have enough protein and energy...

...to carry me through extraction.

So that is a snare trap.

Here's to hoping tomorrow there's an animal there.

And if not, I found my new love of braiding,

which I didn't know I had.

[Shanika] Feeling nourished after that turtle supper.

I can't wait to get to day 21

and call my children, and let them know that I made it.

Many people that I'm representing.

My family, my friends,

um, women of color...

...people of color.

Just so many people in general...

...that want to see me win.

And this is not only my win, this is also their win.

[bleep]

So I, um, cut into my knuckle cutting into some wood.

[grunts]

And last night, I cut my hand with my machete...

...while, um, cutting wood.

I was really shocked

because I can actually see my bone, my knuckle.

It was very painful.

[medic speaking]

Not too good.

- Got a little bit of a cut on your hand? - Yeah.

Let's have a look.

- When did it happen? - [Shanika] Last night.

[medic] Okay, we're just gonna have to clean it up a little.

[medic speaking]

Because it's on the knuckle,

there's a lot of movement in that area when you use your hand,

so it's gonna be a little painful.

- You're able to straighten out the hand? - No.

Pain will prevent you from being able to bend it the way you'd like to.

I'm gonna recommend that you try to rest that hand,

um, and try not to use it and bend it.

[Shanika] Short of dying, this is the worst thing that could happen,

having one hand now.

And I need my hands to find food.

In the first few days...

...you know, I felt like an outsider to the land.

But I'm a part of this landscape now.

Even though I'm out here surviving and now I have this injury.

I take a few deep breaths

and something within me says, "Don't give up."

Maybe it's Africa, the motherland.

Knowing that I'm in my mother's arms, um...

I know my ancestors are with me,

so I feel like that presence and those voices are... are with me.

[Kaila] I woke up this morning and I actually feel great.

My stomach doesn't hurt anymore.

But snake is definitely off the menu for me.

I'm definitely confident with my bow.

In Africa, I shot a warthog.

Oh, my gosh.

Naked and Afraid history, the first two girls to ever get a big kill.

There's deer, boars, tons of birds,

so, hopefully I get something.

There's a game trail right over there that goes down to the water, so...

Might be a good spot somewhere in here.

I'm gonna go down and I'm gonna make a blind really quick

in the area that I think will be good for the animals to come in.

I think my chances of actually getting something from sitting behind the blind

as opposed to walking around and stalking is gonna be a lot greater.

I think on my other challenges, I always wanted, like, my partner to shine.

So, this time around,

I'm showcasing my survival skills.

I actually feel really proud of myself.

Like, I know it's silly, but this is awesome.

I'm very excited.

So nothing fancy, nothing crazy.

Just a quick little blind so I'll be hidden.

I'm gonna do an early morning hunt tomorrow.

Hopefully I get some protein.

[Shanika] I am strong.

My body is healthy.

I have vitality.

Healing energy flows through me.

I am strong.

My body is healthy.

I have vitality.

Healing energy flows through me.

Now, I'm gonna try to make fire.

My life depends on it.

The ancient one sees everything.

My struggles, my victories.

I would normally do this, uh, with two hands.

I am in pain.

[groans] Mmm-hmm.

[sighs]

I can't move my pointer finger.

So to be able to pinch and grasp...

...it's just relegated to these few fingers.

Even my thumb is limited because once I start to move that, I feel the pain.

My ancestors, I mean...

I know they're with me in every minute, even through this.

[bleep]

I mean, as soon as I go to, like, lower my hand

or bring it closer, it starts to hurt...

...even more.

I'm not feeling the sun to warm,

so this fire would be very good, um, on many levels.

Pretty much can't do anything with it.

[tearfully] I'm not sure what I'm gonna do.

[Fernando] Set a snare trap last night.

And I'm gonna go check it this morning.

Setting snare traps is actually kinda cool

because it's like Christmas morning,

every morning, you, like, wait to see what you got.

So we'll see if I got something or... or not.

Aw, man.

The actual main line held fine...

...but the noose portion ruptured.

This means there was a creature here, which is half the battle.

So in this hole is some kind of rodent,

rabbit, um, small mammal.

So, yeah. Whatever it is, it would be plenty to get me through to extraction.

Uh, I'm gonna redo my snare.

I'm gonna use the same leaf,

redo the actual noose part with palm frond.

I make a stronger version of this,

it's chow time.

Uh, it feels pretty strong.

Uh, time will tell.

With no other big animals, this is... this is plan B.

This feels better.

Uh, we'll see tomorrow morning.

All I can do is try.

[Jamie] Probably need to check my fish trap...

...see if there's anything in that.

Wow, the water's drained away.

My god.

Doesn't look good.

The water's completely gone almost.

It's never been this low, ever.

Nothing.

Completely empty.

There's not much water I can put it back into.

Ah, well, back up to camp.

Gonna eat some grubs.

Hopefully the tide will come back in.

So I'm just trying to get these grubs out of the kukrit nuts.

And sometimes easier said than done.

It's a very tedious process, this,

to cut all these nuts open, to get the grubs out.

[blows air]

I mean, if I had a partner right now...

...one of us could be out foraging loads of these,

the other could be processing mountains of them.

And I think we'd get through a lot in one day.

Eh, but it's all up to me, I'm having to do everything.

Wow.

Finding out that I can roast grubs,

and they taste amazing? That's a game changer.

[Shanika] No partner to cuddle with or to keep me warm.

So I lay down and...

...I feel some heat coming from the coal,

the embers of the fire.

So, uh, I try to see if I can get it going again.

I feel like there's not much I can do with this one hand.

So, this is my last effort to keep the fire going.

Brought the fire back.

I'm happy to report that I got my fire going.

The one handed bandit...

...is still able to get fire going.

[chanting]

[Kaila speaking]

It's definitely harder to hike around...

...and exert all this energy when,

you know, I haven't really been eating much at all.

I'm just hoping that I can get some kind of protein before extraction.

[rapid chirping]

These little birds woke up.

They're just like all around me.

Unfortunately, these birds gave away my location.

They're like the tattletales of the jungle.

[Shanika] Before the rain came in,

the wind picked up and it just...

...destroyed my fire.

Then I tried to make fire and...

I feel like there's not much I can do

with this one hand, and just not feeling too great

about this injury.

I'm gambling with my life,

you know, my safety, my wellbeing.

All of it.

So I am...

...making the best decision that I can in this moment.

I'm tapping out.

I don't see how I can continue with my injury.

I can't do anything.

[Sebastian] Are you sure you want to tap?

It's not what I wanna do,

I'd rather go to 21 days,

but with my injury, I would just be here torturing myself.

I want to tap out.

Okay.

Then we'll get you outta here.

[Shanika] I'm not quitting because it's difficult.

I mean, I know difficult,

I know how to work through difficult.

But I'm quitting because it's impossible

for me to continue with one hand and my injury,

and to be able to thrive out here.

It saddens me,

knowing that I could've completed this if I didn't get injured.

I give up Africa, you win.

[narrator] After 16 days in the African shrublands,

Shanika's departure drops her Solo Survival Rating, or SSR,

from 7.0 to 6.4.

[Shanika] On a scale of 1 to 10, I'd say Africa is an 11.

Even though my journey is ending early, I feel like I still learned

a lot of valuable lessons, especially about myself and who I am.

I know my ancestor's are proud of me for attempting this journey.

As a woman on color, a Black woman, to journey to Africa

and attempt something very difficult,

almost impossible.

Just highly disappointed.

[Fernando] I am going to check my snare trap that I set yesterday.

Uh, this is the second rendition, the first one broke.

[whispering] There's so much anticipation right now,

I can barely take it.

Woah.

That's kind of taut.

Holy crap.

There's an animal in there.

[Fernando] This is crazy.

I think I got something...

...but it's way in there.

Holy schnikes.

The noose worked to perfection.

That is a humongous...

...catch.

So I end up catching a African Springhare.

It's much bigger than your average rabbit.

This is amazing.

I planned something...

...executed it, and now it's paying off.

Man, I am... I'm in disbelief. I can't believe it.

This is so cool.

Everyday I've been like, pushing, pushing, trying new things.

And today it paid off.

And here I am...

...skinning a humongous African rabbit.

Feel super grateful.

At this point I feel very much in control of this survival challenge.

Today's kill sets me on the course to finish this challenge strong.

Wow, that's a lot of meat.

I'm about to have a feast...

...like no other.

My mouth is watering.

My stomach is growling.

I don't wanna brag, but this is cooked, like, perfectly.

I would buy this at a county fair.

Mmm.

That is so good.

Tastes like a big turkey leg.

Extraction's not easy, it's gonna be a long day.

It feels good to know that I have food leading up to it.

The power of positivity, it's like, "Keep trying...

...different things."

Man, good things happen.

I got massive African rabbit in my belly.

[whispers] God, that was good.

Gonna go down and check the lines real quick, see if anything's happened.

I just can't believe how scarce food is here in the jungle.

Nothing's going on with the big one.

Man.

And nothing is happening with either one.

Bait is still on.

Hasn't been touched.

But usually you'll see minnows...

I haven't seen signs of life other than shrimp.

I've seen nothing in here.

Now I gotta make my way back up that hill.

I've put out a lot for this challenge.

Lotta calories, lot of energy.

Eventually, something's gotta give.

I'm gonna go ahead and just say that being alone

is an absolute demotivator.

I'm just down.

I'm down and I could really use someone to talk to.

Like a partner.

This absolutely sucks.

Absolutely [bleep] sucks.

I hear branches breaking, all kinds of [bleep] going on.

I'm awake.

I've been hearing...

...like, um...

...like purring.

[snapping fingers]

Get!

Go on.

Go away!

[growling]

Get outta here.

Go away!

Never eaten a grub before.

I found a small little egg.

I am going to hard-boil this egg.

[Terra] You'd think coming to a jungle,

there'd be a lot more than a cactus to eat.

First time for everything.

It's crispy and gooey.

Tastes like old lettuce.

Ugh. Oh god.

Definitely not as...

I'll take that back,

It is as bad as I thought.

Does not resemble...

...the eggs back home.

Ooh.

Something was definitely around last night.

I don't know what it was.

But I was hearing branches breaking, like...

Like the whole no [bleep] deal.

Somethin' was around.

I thought I heard, like the [imitates growling]

Eventful, but I don't know if it was just in my mind.

After not eating...

...my mentals have... have really gone down.

I have to find some protein.

I have to.

[Kaila] After a couple of hours, I decided to go down and check my fish basket.

Can see all the little minnows.

I wish a couple of these bigger guys would go in.

I pulled it out, and I went to put more bait in, and then I was like,

"Oh wait, there is something in there."

Yay! I'm so excited.

There was actually a little, small fish.

And he was like, caught in the sides.

So I was beyond excited.

I can see all the little ones going in

but they can sneak right out.

So if some of the bigger ones could go in and get stuck like that one did...

And I could just get a few of 'em, that would be great.

We'll see.

I'll go back and fry up my little potato chip.

I put a little water in my lid and I am roasting my fish.

And then I can drink the water as well,

so I get like those fatty oils and stuff.

And I'm gonna use these as my little pot holders, so I don't burn myself.

Looks delicious.

Just gonna wait for it to cool down.

I've been waiting for like that aha moment.,

like, that moment of clarity.

It wasn't one thing in particular.

It was more just all these little,

small accomplishments made me realize like...

...you should stop second guessing yourself, like, just go with your gut.

And you'll be fine.

That was great, definitely needed that.

Even if it was just a tiny fish. [laughs]

The rain, it started down pouring.

It's a heavy... heavy shower, that.

Gonna make me tend to my fire, and making sure it's got what it needs.

It's goin' good just now.

It's day 17 and I can't have my fire going out now.

I'm praying that the rain is off.

And I just can't wait 'til I'm back home

where I don't need to worry about any of this.

It's been raining for...

...hours now.

And I'm getting so cold.

My fire's gonna go out.

If this fire goes out, then I'm done.

Starting to think of some weird stuff.

Don't know if it's hypothermia.

I'm not gonna get this lit

if the heavy rain chokes in the fire...

...we made...

I need to get warm.

[sobs]

So cold.
