[Fernando speaking]
Oh.
[Jamie] It's... It's bark from a gum tree
that's been boiled for an hour.
It doesn't look nice.
I'm gonna drink it because it's gonna help my diarrhea.
Its taste, can't really describe,
but it's like barbecue but not like a mmm, barbecue.
It's like just coal.
It's as if I'm drinking coal.
[James] So I have reached the watering hole.
First thought was let's go for a swim
but...
we got monsters in the water.
Hippos are just one of the biggest man killers
in South Africa and they're getting closer.
[Terra] There is a snake right there.
It's just too high.
I can't think of any way to get him down
other than cut the damn tree down.
I lost him.
That would've given me a lot of protein.
A lot of protein.
Hopefully that's a good sign that if I continue to keep looking,
I might find something again.
Just gotta think about right now
that no matter what happens, I'm not quitting.
[suspenseful music playing]
Man, I don't wanna chop that tree down for one papaya.
[Terra] Oh, no.
I don't know where it went.
I heard some go over there, I heard a leaf fall over here.
I overestimated my swing.
And when I hit the tree, the papaya went flying
and I don't know if it went flying left or right.
I didn't hear which way it went.
And I have just lost
one of my only food sources out here.
Wow, I'm already getting winded.
I have no idea where the hell that thing went.
Not gonna keep getting hurt over a papaya.
Nope. Not doing it.
[birds chirping]
[James] I seem to be much more successful
using the basket and trawling with it.
Found a little one.
I'm gonna mount that one on the wall.
It's massive.
We need something bigger than that.
There's not a whole lot of meat there.
It's a super small fish or...
maybe getting just too darn small to deal with.
It is very laborious walking through
the 12 to 18 inches of mud and water.
I do question whether it's worth
putting that effort into just catching one small fish.
Not much.
It's good for a mental boost
but there's really not enough calories there.
It'd be really nice to have
some bigger successes with my bow.
I'm still waiting for the impala to show up.
I've only seen water fowl at the watering hole here
and I'm beginning to wonder
if that second water body that's on the map
might be attracting all of the game.
So I'm gonna take my bow
and we'll see what's out there.
[rain pattering]
[Jamie] It's rained all night.
It just continued raining onto the day
and it doesn't look like it's going to switch off anytime soon.
Right now, I'm getting soaked
because the roof hasn't fully finished
and the material is not good.
I need to add more protection to the shelter.
The only thing that's keeping me warm is this fire.
So right now, this fire means everything to me.
I really need to get more roofing material.
I'm gonna muster every bit of energy I have.
I'm gonna get out in that cold rain
and I'm gonna start chopping.
I'm gonna make a water tight shelter.
Right now, the rain is just coming hard.
This is a really, really heavy rain shower.
Come on. Let's go.
A partner right now would be great.
One of us could look after the fire
and one of us could go and get some
building materials for the roof.
But I'm alone.
All I'm thinking right now while I'm getting this done
is making it to day 21.
And I need to do whatever I have to do to get there.
My motivation for doing this exact challenge
is don't do it too well and through
and I don't want to leave it at that.
I want to get back and show that this can be done.
I've got the whole of Scotland back home watching me.
I'm ready to show them what I'm made of
and just showing them what the Scottish people are made of.
That's looking good.
Got a huge overhang now.
I might take that up in time
and it's pretty watertight from what I can see.
All in all, this is progress.
It's holding up really well.
And it's sort of dry in here.
There's still some drips here and there
but it is raining so heavy right now.
But right now, I'm happy with progress.
[Shanika] Oh. It's getting hot out.
Oh, the bait and the hook is gone.
Well, something was really biting there.
I'm gonna go check out those other lines.
I am a nature-loving Black woman.
I'm here to be in the African bush
in the wilderness like my ancestors,
naked and free.
I'm communing with the landscape that I'm in.
So I let the environment know that I'm here.
I'm a friend.
Aid me in any way possible.
I pray to the fish gods that
the fish are bountiful out here.
Please deliver something to keep me going.
Just a few minutes out in the sun
and I'm sweating,
losing water, getting dehydrated.
The African sun is definitely no joke.
It is hot as hell out here.
The day is heating up pretty fast,
so I can't really do much out in the sun.
And then at night,
I have to retreat back to my boma for safety.
So right now, there's just not a lot of hours in the day,
you know, to get food.
I am so hungry.
My belly has been growling.
Um, I've been salivating, thinking about food.
The fish have not been producing,
so maybe I need to consider other options,
make a plan, start preparing for it.
[Fernando] I'm doing some practice shooting.
I may have to kill something at any given moment.
These are all hammered.
I'm so hungry, so weak, so fatigued.
I've never had so little food this far into a challenge.
My previous challenges,
there was always fish that were easy to get
or fruit that was easy to get
but here in South Africa, in this area,
it's like shoot it with a bow or nothing.
Elephant dung bulls eye.
I feel like I'm just getting weaker from being out here
but make sure I'm ready in case.
So a herd of impala
just came down to the riverbed
about a quarter mile away.
I need to get within a certain range with my archery.
Oh.
[geese squawking]
[chanting foreign language]
[geese squawking]
I'm hungry.
Mmm.
I hear the sound of food right by the water.
Actually, I might need to make a move on him.
[Shanika] I've been fishing every day.
It doesn't always produce results,
so I might as well try something different.
I could make some cordage with this.
I need to make snares for these geese
because they are a viable food source.
Feels good to get out of the boma
and go after something and find some success.
Gonna head back into my boma
and see if I can make some cordage with this.
The water helps to kind of soften it up a little bit.
Pretty strong.
It's a simple snare trap.
It's a noose attached to a stick
that's anchored into the ground.
Once they go in that and then try to move,
it would tighten, keep them trapped there.
I need to get some bait.
I think these berries would serve as good bait for the geese.
I know I'm gonna put them right by the water
where the geese are always at.
So I'll anchor this in the ground
and put the berries around the snare.
Geese come and they try to eat the berries.
Pull it up, put their neck in here,
try to pull away and the snare will tighten.
The geese come here a lot at night
but it would be nice to catch one with a snare
and have food and have some peace and quiet.
Last night, it rained all night.
I had a couple of heavy, heavy showers,
rain was just pouring in the shelter.
But I just laid here, just kept stoking the fire.
Today, it's calmer.
There's no rain.
I'm gonna go back to the stream,
see if it's... see if it's still a stream.
And if it is, I'll get some water.
There's still a lot in the stream.
Gonna have a look over there.
Hopefully, I'll find something to eat
that's gonna sustain me.
It's really steep back here,
especially with all these rocks and stuff.
Head back and we check the other site.
Holy [bleep]
Take out my bag.
There's another one.
[Jaime] This is absolutely amazing
and it's desperately needed.
This would give me enough energy to keep on going.
I'm gonna use one of these to wrap up the crabs.
They're good when it comes to smoking things.
Some good stuff that.
[Jaime] This looks great.
I've got them in the leaf, tied them up with a bush rope,
put it on the embers
and the smoke and we are lovely.
Those leaves are really good for smoking.
I kind of, like, got them on the fire just now on the coals.
Smoked crabs. Best idea.
I open up my little steamed parcel,
three crabs inside,
and it tastes really nice when they're smoked,
a bit kind of barbecue, it's almost like charred,
times is good.
I'm feeling positive about things now.
The rain's held off
and I hope for the rest of this challenge
that the weather is in my favor.
Oh, man. This place is awesome.
Hard but awesome.
I feel a little bit beat-up.
Being alone, there's no one else there with you.
This is you in your own mind
battling your own demons,
battling your own, like, self-doubt.
[sighs]
It makes it, in some ways, more purer but wow.
I definitely see how like solitary confinement
is a punishment or a torture method
because you can go crazy.
I think the mental component
when you're alone is so critical.
It always is in this challenge,
being mentally strong,
but even more so when you're by yourself.
I do feel really tired.
Okay.
It's like I'm moving in slow motion.
Wow.
I'm super fatigued.
I haven't quite had the food that I was hoping for.
I haven't really caught a break
with the large game hunting to be honest
but my experience helps a lot.
Like I know this feeling of fatigue
and it doesn't... I'm not panicking.
I'm like, okay. I'm hungry, I'm tired. It's okay.
It feels very familiar.
The small victories really help take my mind
off of my family and my wife and my kids.
All right. Here it goes.
Not bad. I ate the whole thing.
Bones, skull, brain, guts.
A thousand more of those, I'll be good as new.
Up, up, up.
Up.
I think I'm beginning to kind of shift gears
towards hunting small animals around here.
Um, at this point, I have to, like,
diversify my food options.
[James] I'm seeing a lot of tracks,
big and small.
I just passed a larger animal trail
coming down into this wash.
I'm at a water hole where there's no large game
but there's another body of water on the map.
I'm gonna go see if that's where all the big game is.
I'm tracking the water to see where it's coming from.
I'm visualizing a nice, big pool of water
with a rock ledge
and the water is gonna be nice and clear
and I go in there and take a bath.
Actually, I think we got a clearing in the trees.
Oh, yeah. There it is.
Wow.
That's much bigger than where I'm at.
What a water source.
You know, why would anybody wanna come to my mud hole when you got this?
[James] And we've got monsters in the water.
I only saw him for a second but I'm thinking hippos.
There they are.
Two of them.
Hippos are mean.
I think hippos kill more people
in South Africa than anything else.
Three.
And it's heading right this way.
[James] Well, I have reached the second watering hole.
They're definitely hippos.
I think hippos kill more people
in South Africa than anything else.
I'm guessing they're curious or territorial
because they're getting closer.
[James] I'm watching the hippos go under again
and they come up 50 yards closer
and I do not wanna get in their territory
and make them uncomfortable.
If this is where all the game animals are going,
this might be where I need to hunt.
But dang, since that is where everything else is going,
it means the bigger predators are gonna be there too.
I'm not thinking I'm very welcome in that body of water.
Well, I'm gonna start heading back.
It took probably a good hour to get here.
My plans are to kind of back off the main body
and hit some of the creek
that's coming out the base of the lake.
There's lots of reed growing in there,
lots of activity from animals.
That'll be a good place to set up a hide and hunt,
so that's a little bit closer
but maybe not right in the hippos' backyard.
[birds chirping]
So the monkeys have been running riot
at the papaya trees this morning.
So I'm gonna walk over and take a look.
I finished four crabs
but I really need to up my sugar levels.
I could feel them dropping.
This looks interesting.
A papaya.
I think the monkeys have been dropping papaya.
Yeah.
Wow. Look at that right there.
That's huge.
It's got some mold on it but that looks tasty.
Look at the size of that.
It's huge, ain't it?
I just hope it's nice inside.
It should be.
I'm gonna crack this open right now.
You're not supposed to eat the seeds.
It can cause stomach irritations, bowel irritations.
It's like a melon.
Just absolutely amazing.
Half of the fruit is foaming, almost mushy.
And the other half is juicy.
Definitely it tastes more of sugar.
It feels cold in my mouth.
It's full of juice
and this is exactly what I've been needing.
I'm never gonna take fruit for granted again.
[Fernando] Huh.
I see some frogs in this pond here.
I'm losing weight. I'm getting weak.
I'm not quite getting the food that I need.
So to keep my energy going,
I'm gonna have to, like, switch gears
and have to look for smaller things.
This water is really gross.
It just smells like a porta-potty.
But I just... I gotta do it.
Frogs are absolutely on the menu.
At this point, everything's on the menu.
Caught a frog.
Yeah.
At the very least now, I know I have a meal today,
which is a really big deal in survival.
Commence roasting froggy.
Oh, boy.
I am not thrilled about this at all.
It just came from nasty water.
Dude's ripped.
I'm gonna do it.
You can't pass up a free meal.
Don't wanna overdo it.
Okay.
Bon appetit.
That's not bad.
That is not bad.
It tastes like a fishy chicken.
Hmm.
Which you can't complain out here.
Hmm, hmm, hmm.
Way better than I thought it was gonna be.
African small game may be the ticket
to getting me, uh, through the finish line.
[crickets chirping]
[grunting]
[James] I, like, hear something
grunting from up the creek bed.
It sounded like a hippo...
trampling brush, small trees,
and slowly walking this way.
[tense music playing]
[James] Hippos are very dangerous.
They're known to kill more people
than anything else in South Africa.
But then, I just know there's nothing I can do.
So it was, kind of, uh, lay down and go,
"Okay. Well, if it's gonna come and get me,
it's gonna come and get me.
I can't do a lot."
Maybe throw an extra log on the fire
and build it up a little bit.
Oh, my gosh.
Good night.
[crickets chirping]
[Jamie] [groans]
[bleep]
I've got stomach cramp.
[crickets chirping]
[groans]
[bleep]
[James] [groans]

I've got stomach cramp.
[groans]
[bleep]
And it is starting to head out.
So I got up and I pushed and unload the diarrhea,
it just came straight out.
[groans] This is disgusting.
I don't know what's happening.
[birds chirping]
[James] Last night was absolutely horrible.
I've been having diarrhea
and I'm losing fluids in the process.
It could be game over
so I need to get something done about this.
So I remember an old trick
if I was to take a chunk from a gum tree.
And this looks like one in right now.
This seems to be a gum tree.
I've read out that it's...
That it can be quite bitter.
But I'm gonna drink it
and hopefully it sorts the issue out,
boil it in water.
And if I drink that,
it should take the diarrhea away.
It should fix it completely.
Just take it out of the pot and set that to the side.
That is pure black, like tar.
I can't even see the bottom.
And it looks disgusting.
And I suppose the taste is really bitter.
It's taste,
I can only describe it as a barbeque.
But not like a, "Hmm. Barbeque."
But it goes off...
It's like just coal, as if I'm drinking coal.
[James] It's not for big doorknob and key but it works.
Had some animal activity last night.
I could hear it but couldn't see it.
Oh, my gosh.
It sounded like a hippo.
And by this time,
I'm guessing that they've left.
I guess we know what time it is,
it's to collect firewood time.
[Shanika] All right. Let's see if this, um,
line pulled anything in.
[birds chirping]
Nothing.
I can see my snare from here,
it hasn't gotten a geese or anything.
Yeah, I'm a little frustrated, you know, I'm hungry.
I really need the food, I need the calories,
you know, to get by and survive.
But I got to remain hopeful that I might get some food.
You know, it's that hope that keeps me going.
I feel like it's important to connect with my ancestors
and, you know, seeking clarity and guidance
on this journey, and if I can really make it.
I have put my friend up there.
I call him the ancient one.
He's an ancestor of this land
and sitting with me as I sleep here at night,
he's watching over me.
I have the ancient one and grandfather fire.
I feel like grandfather fire is my best companion.
He keeps me warm.
Fire represents the spirit.
So by keeping him going, I keep my self going.
Oh, I almost forgot.
I have this one here, the warthog's tusk.
My representation of strength.
So today I'm gonna make sure to call on my ancestors
and all the forces that be to help me out.
[Terra] My body is starting to eat itself rapidly
to keep up with everything I've been doing.
Definitely not thriving the way I was supposed to.
Something's got to change.
Or I don't know how I can stay here.
I think my daughter is, like, 90% of what I think about.
I do these challenges a lot for her.
Do you know what's going on with me?
I am going to Mexico.
All right.
[Terra] So tell me what you think?
Um, I think it's really cool
and I'm really excited.
[Terra] She's an wholesome child
that everybody wishes for.
I'm gonna miss you.
Every time she sees me
complete one of these,
I'm hoping that she's seeing
something that she can still accomplish.
So I'm gonna go to the river
and see if I can find something in there,
mussels, shrimp, something.
I got to find something.
This is gonna be my little wrist strap,
uh, that I'm actually going to my ankle with.
I'm gonna tether it to the pot.
That way, no matter what,
I don't lose my pot while I'm out there.
And I've got free rein of both hands,
the pot can float along while I'm doing my thing
and I can just pull it in
each time I need to put something in it.
[Terra] There's, like, a lot of sand and small rocks.
[laughs]
[bleep]
[laughs] I immediately find a shrimp.
I've reached down literally in the same spot.
[laughs]
And I pick up another shrimp right off the bat.
If I feel a shrimp, I try to grab it.
The problem is, uh, they wiggle a lot.
[laughs]
The actual goal is first five and then further with ten.
[Terra] I ended up getting a total of five shrimp.
I just lost the lid to my pot.
[birds chirping]
They start making noises,
so I... So I started copying them.
So I feel like sound of the jungle.
I will speak to the frogs, right?
And they'll speak back.
[makes sound]
[frogs croaking]
[Jamie] I see a monkey, a spider monkey.
[mimics monkey noises]
Just looking straight into my face.
[mimics monkey noises]
We've been talking.
I've been moving trees about as well.
I've never experienced a monkey like that
in the wilderness before, only as a...
[Jamie mimics monkey noises]
that's a story to tell when I get back home.
[Terra] Oh...
I just lost the lid to my pot and everything in it.
Somehow in the current,
the latch popped open...
and I lost everything.
I lost the shrimp, I lost the lid.
I don't know if it was just the pressure of the water
going on across the pot
that made the lid come off.
There's no shrimp.
There's nothing but water.
But after everything I put into this today,
it's probably the most disheartening thing
that's happened on either of my challenges.
All of that work, all of that time,
for nothing.
Everything is gone.
I haven't had one true win this whole challenge.
