Original subtitles

[Woman] This is different.

[Man] This is something we've never done before.

You gotta watch your back for not just the animals this time,

but for the other survivalists.

[Gary shouts] Run!

Yeah!

[Choking]

[Narrator] For the first time ever,

twelve of Naked and Afraid's most skilled survivalists

are competing head-to-head

for 45 days

in the South African bush...

- Whoo! [Laughs] - [Man laughs]

to crown the best of the best...

Yeah!

and win $100,000.

This is what I live for!

[Man] I will do anything to win this challenge.

[Narrator] Failure means elimination.

Don't bitch about [bleep] losing.

[Narrator] Only one will reach the end...

[Man] This challenge is so real.

and will be the last one standing.

Previously on last one standing...

The competition began as the survivalists started with nothing...

We have empty bags starting.

[Steven] Usually, we have the essential things that we need

and we have a map.

and discovered that their fates were connected.

If either partner chooses to tap out of the challenge,

both will be eliminated.

- [Laughing] Oh, my God! - [Man] I know, right?

I don't trust anybody.

[Narrator] Then, they immediately needed to find tools

to help them survive a frigid night.

- [Woman] Here's a pot in here. - [Man] Nice.

[Narrator] While some teams prioritized the basics...

[Man] Doing really good.

others hunted for advanced survival tools.

[Cheeny] I see something tied to that tree right there.

[Jeff] Oh! [Laughs]

Found it! Found it!

[Shouts] Yes!

[Narrator] But when a cold front swept through...

the brutal conditions proved too much for Amber and Gwen.

-[Amber sobs] -So, I'm gonna have to tap you.

Okay.

Unfortunately, Gwen, we're gonna have to medically tap you.

It's all right, bud.

[Narrator] With their partners pulled from the challenge by medics,

Matt and Wes get to continue.

But with their first migration just three days away,

they must now do it alone.

[Bird chirping]

[Grunting]

There's, I think, like, a kudu barking at me.

[Barking]

Doesn't like me in its territory.

My strategy to become the last one standing is

I need to get the food that's available.

And I need to get as much as I can.

I'm the scavenger.

I am the dumpster diver of the wilderness.

Oh, wow.

Mini plums.

Everything I can get my hands on,

if it's edible, I look around, I eat it.

If we're not eating meat or some kind of large chunk of protein,

then I need to sort of graze like an animal.

And in the next few days, we're gonna migrate.

So, me and Waz plan on keeping our eyes peeled for food.

We don't know what's gonna be at the next place.

So, we gotta get our bodies full of nutrients,

so we can make it through this.

I don't know what I'll find to eat.

It could be anything.

I am the scavenger. I am the hyena.

Oh.

[Chuckles]

- [Flies buzzing] - [Gary] Look at this

big-ass kudu.

Wow.

Oh. [Chuckling]

Oh, God.

Do you smell it?

It's a lot of maggots.

It's time for Gary Golding to eat.

I eat maggots like ice cream.

And tarantulas like cookies.

[Flies buzzing]

[Dan] Need a little.

Neat chandelier.

I hung it up 'cause

smoking it sort of keeps the bugs off.

Helps preserve it.

Prevents rot.

[Cheeny] Um, Dan?

The meat doesn't smell very good on the leg.

[Narrator] As the challenge began,

Dan and Cheeny decided to forgo looking for survival items,

so they could build a sturdy shelter.

But they were gifted a share of Sarah and Steven's impala meat cache.

[Cheeny] When I slice this open,

it's got, like, a greenish tinge.

And I can't even, like...

[Dan] Really?

I think I'm gonna be sick if I sniff it. [Gags]

[Dan] It's that bad?

[Cheeny] I mean, you can smell it.

[Dan sniffing]

[Bleep]

[Cheeny] Like, this is all rotten.

Yeah, you're right.

Even the jerky?

[Cheeny] Does it smell bad?

- It smells... - [Cheeny] Oh, it's green.

- [Dan] No, don't say that. - [Cheeny] Yeah. Oh, yeah.

- That's definitely not good. - [Dan] Quite rotten.

[Cheeny] That's not good.

Dan and I are trying to get ready

for our migration in a couple days.

And we have the least amount of body fat of anybody.

So we really have to get our hands on some meat.

Let's just go see if we can finally eat some food.

[Dan speaking]

[Matt] Gwen just left,

and Gwen's health was in such jeopardy

that she had to be medically pulled out of this challenge.

And I am now stuck here

for the remainder of this challenge, solo.

But in the end,

I still feel like I'll be victorious.

I am ready to get this bow.

[Narrator] Matt tracked and spotted a critical survival cache.

[Matt] I've got to grab that bow before, you know, obviously, Jeff can.

[Narrator] But Gwen's health prevented him from retrieving it.

[Matt] For me, a bow gives me the possibility to get meat.

Got a few days left before migration.

And I don't know what it's gonna take to get there.

But what I do know is

I need all the calories in my body to make it.

So, I gotta make something to get up this tree and get that bow.

[Birds chirping]

[Jeff] I'm just thinking of the reaction to our trade offer.

How Matt was very not forthcoming

on whether there was one or two.

- [Stacey] Right. - [Jeff] And then how Gwen immediately said,

"we'll talk it over and let you know."

Both of those could be reactions

to knowing that they didn't have the bow.

It's just a thought.

[Narrator] For the first few days of the challenge,

Jeff and Stacey prioritized

finding all the advanced survival tools shown on the map.

The only item they don't have is a bow.

[Jeff] So, we are thinking about two knives for one extra bow.

[Matt] But I'm not about to tell him the details

that it's stuck in a tree.

[Jeff] This is the most pivotal and important meeting of the entire day

because we're proposing a formal trade offer.

We are offering two of these advanced survival knives

for Matt's additional bow and arrows.

I think we're about to find out one way or another,

especially if we ask to see it.

[Stacey] Uh-huh.

[Jeff] If we were to secure that trade deal,

that would mean that we would have every single item from this location one.

And then, I'll have the advantage above all the other groups.

[Waz] What you got, Gary?

[Narrator] Maggots galore.

[Waz speaking]

[Laughing]

[Gary] I wanna get 'em to a nice, brown texture and flavor.

The way this challenge works,

resources can run thin pretty quick.

And when you're in our situation,

any little bit counts.

I like to eat my maggots well-done. [Laughing]

It's a lot of maggots.

That's like the size of three fish.

I know Gary is pretty well-known for eating absolutely anything.

It's part of who he is and part of his survival strategy.

He's happy to eat any food.

But, Gary and I just have a very different style of survival.

Wow.

[Maggots rustling]

[Crunching]

Mmm.

Ah, yeah.

[Pot clanging]

If you're not willing to eat maggots,

you're not really a survivalist.

Mmm.

- What's going on? - [Cheeny] What's up, Matt?

[Matt] Haven't been real good.

- You wanna walk with me to the water for a minute? - [Dan] Sure.

So, haven't been really good?

[Matt] No.

Gwen tapped.

[Cheeny] Really?

[Dan] Did they take her out already?

Wow.

[Matt] I mean, this challenge is...

You could do everything perfect,

but sometimes, you can't control it.

[Dan] Uh-huh.

[Jeff] Hey, neighbors.

- Oh, hey. - [Dan] Oh, hey. What's up?

[Jeff] What's going on?

- We didn't see you this morning, so we thought... - [Matt] Yeah.

"are the trade talks still happening?"

- Yeah. - [Jeff chuckles] Or, what, uh,

what happened?

I'll come up, like, later.

- Okay. - [Matt] But, yeah. We're a little delayed now.

- [Jeff] Yeah. - We have got some other things to do first, so...

You mind if we just, like, take a look at the bows to see what they look like?

So, right now, I've got 'em off the site a little bit.

So, Jeff is asking me, "where is the bow?" [Laughs]

Well, I'm not about to tell him

it's up in a tree exactly where it shows on the icon of the map.

- Okay. All right. - [Matt] Yeah.

So, the... afraid of someone

- stealing 'em right out of the shelter? - Yeah. [Chuckles]

You never know.

- They can't fit in there. - [Both laughing]

It, uh... with the fire, I didn't want 'em to be off the,

you know, the thing and so...

- [Jeff] Yeah. - But I'll bring... I'll bring 'em. You'll see it.

- Okay. Okay. - [Matt] Yeah.

[Both laughing]

You never... you never know.

I am trying to just push him off of that trail just a little longer.

We would've been up there way before with Gwen and I, but she got sick.

So, uh, now, a little deviation tactics

and I tell him, "it's just... it's not in plain sight."

All right. Well, we'll see you later.

- Take care of yourself. - [Matt] Yeah.

- Yeah. Yep, sure. - [Jeff] You know.

I believe Matt is being deceptive.

[Matt] Thanks for swinging by.

[Jeff] So, all right. We'll see you a bit later, Matt.

Yep. We'll see you, guys.

[Jeff] So, I may be playing nice now.

But the moment someone starts being the deceptive one,

that's how wars happen.

[Matt] So, Jeff just showed up,

specifically wanting to see the bows.

The only reason I think he would wanna see the bows is

he either doesn't believe I have 'em,

or he has possibly seen 'em.

I don't think he's seen 'em.

He's speculating now if he needs to go looking for 'em.

So, [sighs]

He's hiding the bows in the forest somewhere?

Where they would be free game for anybody to stumble upon and claim?

Whereas if he just put them in his shelter,

he knows that they would be safe.

[Stacey] That was very odd.

Very interesting of you to ask him

if we could see it.

Matt never leaves his bow away from his side ever.

- He sleeps with that thing. - [Stacey] Uh-huh.

He doesn't have it.

I'm telling you.

The bow is still out there.

He hasn't found it.

And he's been playing everyone to prevent us from looking.

And it's worked.

We haven't looked for it yet.

And when he said he's got "stuff to do today,"

isn't that convenient?

I personally think we should

go try to look for it.

Because we have not seen it.

No one has seen it.

I kind of feel like I'm being held hostage.

We have spent so much time trying to beat everybody else

at getting all the items on the map,

that we take shortcuts

when it comes to getting water and a decent shelter and looking for food.

And I don't really care enough about those items.

But he's really all about winning.

[Matt] Time is of the essence.

So, lashing a couple little last-minute quick lashings.

I don't have time to make all the rope.

Quick hitch knot on every one of these.

Just to give myself a little bit of lashing material once I get up there.

I gotta make something to get up this tree

and grab that bow before Jeff can.

I'm gonna have to find the right kind of tree to kind of put up there,

make a makeshift ladder as fast as possible.

So that is when the scramble begins.

And up the trail I go.

[Jeff] So, when we do this,

let's do it in complete, like,

quiet voices.

[Stacey] Okay.

[Jeff] So, that if he's chopping at a tree and doesn't know we're coming,

we'll be able to hear his chops.

[Stacey] Okay.

[Jeff] I truly believe Matt's up to something.

He's not being the boy scout, uh,

Matt that we're used to.

I'm hauling as fast as a naked man can go because

I need to chop something down that's gonna make a ruckus.

I need to chop it down quick

and I need to, hopefully, get it down before they know what's up.

So, what I'm looking for

is the ability to get up that tree.

I'm looking for a tree like this,

with a fork.

Somewhere around 14-feet tall.

It's not the straightest tree that I would like.

I don't have a lot of options.

So, what I'm building is a sling ladder

where I'm gonna tie the lashing that Gwen made.

When it goes on the tree, it's actually gonna hug that tree.

Keep it from wanting to roll side to side.

If it's rigid, it might slide off and come crashing down.

I'm already hearing voices.

So, it tells me they're

within earshot.

[Chopping]

[Matt] Come on.

[Grunting]

[Grunting intensifies]

[Breathing heavily]

- [Bird chirps] - [Jeff whispering]

[Stacey whispering]

- [Jeff in normal voice] Hey, buddy. - [Sighs] Oh, [bleep].

Matt, I think we're officially playing the game, my friend. [Chuckles]

I see a large naked figure chopping down a very large tree.

[Matt sighs]

[Softly] Piece of cake.

[Exhales]

- Hey, buddy. - [Matt] What's up, buddy?

[Jeff] The look of death on that man's face

when he sees us standing there.

The epitome of the "oh [bleep]."

What, uh...

you, uh, harvesting timber, right?

Harvesting a little timber.

What you gonna do with that guy?

Ah...

[Exhales] Just make stuff.

Yeah.

[Matt] Jeff has a [bleep] grin on his face that tells me

that he knows I haven't gotten that item out of a tree.

Too bad you don't know where you're going.

I seem to got this map figured out pretty good.

So, uh,

apparently we're gonna need a tall stick, so...

[Matt] But what Jeff doesn't know

is what he has to do to get it.

You bring any rope?

Maybe.

- Might need it. Pro tip. - [Jeff laughing]

[Matt] My advantage here is I've already found it.

I know exactly where it is

and I know exactly what it takes to get it down.

What about that, uh, that no deception there, Matt?

I told you I found it.

You asked if... told me if I found it.

Not necessarily if I had it in my possession.

I see.

It appears that the boy scout

has now, uh, listened to the little devil on his right shoulder.

This is a whole new challenge, baby.

[Matt] You might as well just follow me.

You're going to, anyways. [Scoffs]

[Jeff] You know what?

I think he's right, I think we might as well just follow him.

[Dan] You see any good straight pieces for...

[Cheeny] Oh, yeah. For walking sticks?

[Dan] For, yeah, walking sticks.

Unfortunately, we have some rotten jerky from the impala.

And the migration's coming up.

So we're just out trying to get some other protein out here or something

into our system before we migrate.

Saw something slither down under this rock.

Hmm.

Who is in there?

I am a scientist.

I'm a researcher, I'm a planner.

But I think the biggest thing is

being resourceful.

Just thinking back to the Amazon,

I couldn't believe what I was able to accomplish.

So, I ate a bunch of tomatoes before,

uh, starting the challenge.

Went to the bathroom for the first time,

and there's a bunch of little tomato sprouts coming out of the ground.

And I don't think anyone's ever tried to have a garden

and have it actually produce food.

I couldn't be more proud. [Chuckles]

Every time I'm out here, I let my grubby little inner child

[chuckles] Go full blast into the environment.

Pull the rock back.

It's all these potatoey things.

I wonder if that's edible.

It looks like a potato.

- Hey, Cheeny. - [Cheeny] Yeah?

What did you find?

[Jeff] What does that look like to you?

[Cheeny] Potatoes.

- Right? - [Cheeny] Yeah.

I'm suspecting it's this African wild potato I read about,

but I'm... I'm not really sure.

I mean, it feels like a potato.

[Dan] Looks like a potato, feels like a potato.

Must be a potato.

So, we have to do some tests to determine if it's edible or not.

Starts out with, uh,

opening it, rubbing it a little on a sensitive part of your skin,

see if it tingles a little bit in each step,

see if there's any red flags in each step.

Eventually, rubbing a little bit on the inside of your mouth, maybe.

And chewing a little bit, spitting it out.

I think my lips are tingling slightly,

but that doesn't mean it's not cookable.

Yeah, usually, once you

boil a lot of wild foods,

- the alkaloids are... - [Dan] Mmm-hmm.

not an issue anymore.

It's crunchy. It's, like, grainy.

It's clearly water and starch storage for this plant.

[Cheeny] Yeah.

[Dan] It's good, right?

It's like a potato

mixed with a water chestnut.

Yes, that's it. Yeah.

It tastes totally edible.

Zero red flags,

starchy, it's weird.

But it obviously is gonna help us succeed.

This fried up a little bit, these sliced and fried up...

[Cheeny clicks tongue] Ooh, baby.

Well, it makes me feel better about our spoiled impala.

Yeah.

[Matt breathing heavily]

[Jeff] Okay.

[Matt] So, without a doubt,

getting this bow down without a partner,

puts me at a big handicap.

Without having a second person there,

it's gonna make it very, very difficult.

[Jeff] Is there

an opportunity here

to work together and split up the bows?

You sound like a guy in negotiations of something he hasn't found yet.

Well, I'm a guy in negotiations

with everything else on the map.

How about, uh...

Let's see if you agree on this.

- So, let's say. You do do it, by yourself. - Yep.

If you get 'em both, we'll,

you know, still trade two knives for one

- bow. - That's where it gets complicated.

Okay.

- [Matt] To be honest with you... - Okay.

I'm only one guy now, I don't need three knives.

So, I guess you're saying, if you get 'em by yourself...

Well, um...

I'm gonna then decide.

How Jeff is trying to take every item to have bargaining tools,

I don't like that.

I'm here to compete to be the best.

What I have is a cord lashed between two branches.

And it's gonna sort of saddle the tree itself.

Attempt number one, here we go.

I should've lost some weight for this.

[Jeff] Matt's a big guy.

And he's climbing up this rickety little ladder

that he built in a matter of minutes because he was rushed.

Because he knew we were onto his scent.

Uh, this does have a chance of failure right now.

If Matt falls out of this tree,

it could cost him his entire challenge.

[Dramatic music playing]

[Matt panting]

[Dramatic music playing]

[Matt] So, this euphorbia tree takes it to another level.

[Matt panting]

[Matt] You can't touch it. It's highly poisonous.

One touch of this tree could send me out of the challenge.

So, not only do I have to worry about touching the tree,

but falling out of it.

[Matt] Definitely should have lost some weight before this adventure.

Big man up a twig right now. Not even, like, a little tree.

[Matt panting]

Uh, victory could not be more sweet

than watching the loser watch me lower the prize.

Now, I become the Alpha.

Uh, let's see what we got here.

[Chuckles] Oh.

They were calling to me.

[Dramatic music playing]

[Matt] I still don't know what I'm doing yet.

[Jeff] Mm-hmm.

Matt understands I'm his greatest competition out here.

And he doesn't want that bow in my hands.

Because he doesn't want me to beat him and to win this thing.

That's what all of this is about right now.

[Matt] I'm going to take it back.

Finally, one of us has got something besides you there, Jeff.

[Jeff] Yeah.

[Dan] It's a huge score.

[Cheeny] There's so many of them.

- [Dan] Oh, you're putting that on bake? - [Cheeny] Yeah.

Yep. This is the other half.

[Dan] I'm excited to eat this.

- Okay. - [Cheeny] It smells good.

[Dan] Wow. It's good, right?

[Cheeny] Mmm.

[Dan] Yeah.

[Cheeny] Smells really good.

[Narrator] Despite its appearance,

an African wild potato is actually a plant

and has no relationship to a regular potato.

While these potatoes offer some carbohydrates,

they provide 60% less calories than a regular potato.

Unlimited supply, and that's just starch and nutrients.

We knew there's protein out here,

- but having these kind of nutrients? - [Cheeny] Starch... yeah.

I know potatoes aren't as sexy as an impala, but...

I couldn't have asked for

any better advantage in this competition, guaranteed.

- [Cheeny] I'm so glad you chased that lizard. - [Dan] Okay.

Hell, yeah. Going to embrace my inner sticky child.

[Snake rattles]

[Jeff] Isn't that something?

Matt can never call me "the deceiver" anymore.

I... I've shed... I've shed that title,

and apparently, he's picked it up. [Chuckles]

Matt has pulled the trigger first.

And it appears the war may now be starting.

I mean, he doesn't need two bows.

He will never use two bows.

He could trade it to us right now and get two advanced survival knives.

And also because we're the only ones with other items.

We hold them all.

[Stacey] Don't you feel kind of like a dick for that?

These tools out here are meant to help us get through our days

and to move forward and to survive out here,

not to be hoarded like a little gremlin

in their boma at the base of a tree.

No, because we've let everyone know

that we're... That we're willing to trade.

[Stacey] Yeah, but what else does anybody have

besides the bow and their skills to trade?

Getting as many items as you can

does not qualify winning in this challenge.

I'm seeing on everybody's faces that they... They don't trust him

and he's not thinking ahead of the game.

Well, nothing yet.

And so, um,

maybe we just hold the knives until the next location.

[Stacey] What do you think about just giving a knife to people of our choice?

'Cause we literally have everything.

This is crazy to me.

Like, where is all this socialism coming from?

I mean, uh, my skills and my skills alone

are what allowed us to acquire all of these materials.

I mean, he might also decide that,

"why give Jeff a bow and have Jeff out there killing impala?"

He can keep them both and prevent that from happening.

We shall see. We'll see if the boy scout returns

or whether, uh, Matt goes full savage.

[Dramatic music playing]

[Waz] You were gone for a long time.

[Gary] That's right. I was camping with gaza.

[Waz] It's gone.

[Waz] Gary and I are... Are camp... We're camping right now.

We don't have a shelter.

We're under a tree. It's got a pretty solid canopy, so it's not too rough.

[Gary] Look at the smoke coming out of the center.

[Waz] But it looks like the fire is burning away at the tree a little bit.

[Gary] Wow.

That fire has burned all the way into the center.

It's like hot lava in there.

- It tore that tree up. - [Waz] Yeah.

We got two days left here.

It's only for two nights, so it's not going to be too big of a deal.

- [Waz speaking] - [Gary speaking]

[Waz speaking]

[Gary speaking]

[Waz speaking]

[Bleep]

[Gary speaking]

[Waz speaking]

[Gary speaking]

- [Gary speaking] - [Waz speaking]

[Mysterious sound]

[Gary speaking]

[Waz speaking]

[Gary speaking]

[Waz speaking]

I can [bleep] hear it.

[Waz speaking]

[Bleep] Get up. Get up. Get up. Get up. Get up. Get up.

[Frantic movement]

[Bleep]

[Waz speaking]

I can [bleep] hear it.

[Waz speaking]

[Bleep] Get up. Get up. Get up. Get up. Get up. Get up.

- [Frantic movement] - [Bleep]

[Waz speaking]

[Gary speaking]

[Waz] Gary, I think you're, uh, lucky to have made it through the night.

- You were lying directly under that, you know? - [Gary] Oh, yeah.

My head was right here,

probably weighs a few thousand pounds.

That would have smashed my skull.

That was a close call for me.

You know, I used one of my lives out here.

For sure.

[Waz] It's the stuff of nightmares.

'Cause, like, I wouldn't be able to get the branch off you,

and I don't think you would've made it, you know?

We just count our blessings and move on.

But to me, it's like another day at the office.

I got to keep moving forward.

[Waz] That side of the tree is still going to come down

'cause it's still burning from the inside.

And we don't know which way this is going to fall, so...

We should find a new place to camp tonight.

[Waz] Yeah, today, first thing on the agenda

is just moving camp a little bit.

We want to be away from this tree so it doesn't fall on us.

But that's a lot of calories.

You're going to be sweating, get sore muscles, lose energy.

So, it's... it's going to put us already at a disadvantage

before migration.

[Gary] I'm just going to walk around and look for [bleep].

On day seven, we're going to migrate.

So, today, we don't even plan on building a shelter.

'Cause you're gonna burn all those calories and gonna have to walk away from it.

I mean, I thought about under than tree.

[Waz] Yeah. That's a pretty solid canopy.

There's no huge barriers from the wind,

but if we have a fire in between us, then that mitigates it.

[Gary] Yeah.

It's got a lot of leaves.

And if you look over here, it's... Pretty flat right here.

[Waz] Yeah. I think it works.

Let's start clearing it up.

[Dramatic music playing]

- [Jeff] Hey, man. - [Matt] What's up?

[Stacey screams]

- [Stacey chuckling] - [Jeff] Wow. What's up, Matt?

Not much. What's up, guys?

[Jeff] Now, look at you, Mr, uh, double bow hunter.

- [Matt] Double bow is here. - [Jeff chuckles]

[Matt] So, I've thought it overnight, I've decided

that in my challenge,

I don't want to have to give something to get something.

And to be honest, like, when I hear screaming in the... in the parts of...

I'm getting all your [bleep].

[Jeff screaming]

[Echoes] We're finding all your [bleep]!

And you come up with a position of power to a... for a trade.

You know, I decided it's not my challenge.

So, I'm actually going to be giving this bow to Steven.

- Okay. - [Matt] And, uh...

We were more deserving of that bow than anyone else here

based on us being there at the same time as Matt.

But you know what?

What comes around goes around.

It's noted.

And so, I'm going to surprise him today

and bring it over his way.

Okay.

Already, we've seen someone like Jeff

going in and try to hoard every item.

So, day seven, we're going to be migrating to a new spot.

So, I'm going to try to figure out a way

to work together this time.

No surprise. Obviously, he's a predictable...

He's a predictable human. Jeff plans to get everything that he can

to either barter or hinder other people.

We definitely want the stuff.

- But we don't want to hoard it. - [Waz] Exactly.

[Matt] His plan is to get there the fastest on day seven.

He's only one person, though.

- [Matt] Oh, yeah. - [Dan] That's what I was saying.

We look at this map and split up, like...

- [Man] Yeah. - Divide them up.

There's no way he'll get more than one.

- [Steven] I like that plan. - [Matt] It's... yeah.

- [Waz] So, let us play it all together. - [Steven] Exactly.

[Matt] Okay.

When we migrate, if we've got someone out here

that's trying to hoard and barter everything,

I think it's going to make sense for the rest of us

to try to divide and conquer these caches

so Jeff doesn't go from one to the other and get all of them.

[Waz] So, everyone's in agreeance?

We all just going to collect [bleep]?

People like Jeff, he's just showing all his cards way too early.

For me, it doesn't make any sense at all.

He thinks he's playing a strong game,

but right now, he's in the shallow end of the pool,

he doesn't even realize it.

[Steven] Dude! Hell, yeah!

[Matt] When there's a weasel stealing eggs,

you know, we've got to split the basket up a little bit.

Yeah.

[Matt] Jeff's created a scenario where it's him against everyone.

[Dan] Yup.

[Gary] Crazy game. Totally different than the norm.

[Steven] Crazy.

I want this.

I'm gonna do something with it. [Panting]

[Narrator] Two days ago,

Wes lost his partner, Amber, to a medical tap,

and, now, must face all his daily survival tasks alone.

[Wes] A team of two is now a team of one.

So, no more shared responsibilities. I just got to do everything.

I've been alone before, and it doesn't really bother me.

I don't like it. I prefer to be a team.

I don't have anybody to help carry supplies

or bounce ideas off.

Usually, a good partnership gets more done than a single person.

This is the first time I've used the map since Amber's been gone.

She was always the navigator, so I let her lead.

Only now, I'm thinking I should have paid a little more attention.

Day six.

Tomorrow's the big day.

Ah, migration!

No one knows what to expect.

[Narrator] Throughout the challenge,

the survivalists will migrate every seven days

to a new location,

which will provide new opportunities for food,

resources and new cached items hidden in the environment.

[Wes] So, today, I'm going to go find the location

where we're supposed to meet up tomorrow,

so I don't have to stress about that.

I take the same trail out and then act like I'm going towards the monkey fruit area.

There's a monkey fruit tree close by

where the meeting point is tomorrow.

So, the monkey fruit, I think, is down here at the bottom of this ravine.

Be nice if few more pieces of monkey fruit fell.

There it is.

All right, my navigation skills aren't so shabby.

Oh, what's this?

What's this?

As luck would have it, a piece of monkey fruit.

It's, uh... It's not hard green.

It's kind of lightened-up green.

And you can see where something's already been trying to get at it.

Typically means that it's ripe.

So, that'll go in the bag. It's top pocket find.

[Exhales]

Yeah, that's barely been gotten into.

Africa is offering us free food right now.

Monkey fruit does not taste what it looks like.

You would think it'd be orange deliciousness.

It's not.

It's got a... A little sweetness.

And then a lot of bitter at the end.

But it does have nutritional value.

Hey, now. Hey, now.

That was a success right there.

And continue on my journey.

[Cheeny] We should probably explore that map before it gets too hot.

[Dan] Yeah, let's do that.

Would like more meat, though.

[Cheeny] Mmm-hmm.

[Dan] Day six.

And before we migrate, a big part of what we're doing today

is trying to just find the area that we're going to need to go to on day seven

to get to the next location, 'cause that's going to be really important.

All right, so, plan is to follow this trail down,

scout out the map tree...

- [Cheeny] Mmm-hmm. - [Dan] And then find this on the way back.

[Cheeny speaking]

[Dan] It's time.

[Cheeny] We should be coming up on a T intersection, ideally.

Well, we're just out trying to learn our paces.

Got to be able to move fast tomorrow but thorns are going to be a bitch.

[Cheeny] Mmm-hmm.

[Dan] I'm not known for my land nav skills. They're not great.

But Cheeny, on the other hand, trains people in it.

[Cheeny] 'Cause we're just starting to parallel the river now.

[Dan] This is around 45 paces, and the path followed the right direction.

[Cheeny] Yeah.

[Dan] So, she's been helping me out with pacing

and all the kind of skills that we're going to need

to move forward in this challenge.

[Cheeny] So, I mean, what's up here?

[Dan] Almost there.

[Murmuring] Okay. 27, 28...

I think we found it.

That's the monkey tree, huh?

[Cheeny] Yeah, this is our ravine,

- so I guess that's it. - [Dan] Okay. This is definitely it.

-The map made sense. [Chuckles] -[Cheeny] Finally.

[Dan] [Bleep] God.

[Cheeny sighs] Good. We'll sleep better tonight.

[Gasps] Look at that snake.

Holy [bleep].

- [Dan] It's thick. - [Cheeny] Pretty good-sized puffadder.

[Dan] Tell me if it's venomous.

- Like, the rare kind. - [Cheeny] Oh, yeah. That's venomous.

[Narrator] The puffadder is a highly venomous viper

responsible for more deaths than any other snake in Africa.

It is extremely aggressive with large fangs,

and when disturbed,

it can strike its target with sudden rapid accuracy.

- [Dan] Quick. - [Cheeny] I know, I'm going.

[Dan] I don't want to spook it.

[Dramatic music playing]

- [Dan] Oh, I see him now. - [Cheeny] Move slow.

[Dramatic music continues]

[Dan] Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa.

[Cheeny] Whoa.

[Dan] Ow!

[Suspenseful music playing]

[Cheeny gasps] Look at that snake.

Holy [bleep].

[Cheeny] Pretty good-sized puffadder.

[Dan] Tell me if it's venomous. Like, the rare kind.

[Cheeny] Oh, yeah. That's venomous.

- [Dan] Got it. Whoo! - [Cheeny] Whoo!

- [Dan] That's some meat. - [Cheeny sighs in relief]

- Making up for it. - [Cheeny] Yeah, man.

[Dan] Check that out. [Chuckles]

[Cheeny] Oh, yeah, Dan.

[Dan] Wondering where they all been hiding.

[Cheeny] Dan, you're my hero.

Yeah, bring it over here so I can just whack its head off.

Cool.

- That is venomous as [bleep]. - [Cheeny] oh, yeah, it is.

- Yeah, look at these glands right here. - [Cheeny] Yeah.

[Dan] There's this big, old puffadder. It's, like, three feet long.

Just scooting along the ground.

Just like that, we have our first protein score of this challenge.

Obviously, it's a fantastic source of energy for migration day.

Peeling a snake's just like pulling a sock off your foot.

[Cheeny] Yeah.

- [Dan] Oh, yeah? - [Cheeny] Yeah, "skinny rabbit."

[Dan] Oh, [bleep].

Pretty good hunk of meat.

Sort of.

[Jeff] Today is about making some items for migration and all that.

- [Stacey] Yeah. - [Jeff] And we got today to prepare for it.

[Stacey] Mmm-hmm.

Day six. I'm excited to be moving tomorrow.

We can put together some shoes. We'll be walking out of here in style.

[Stacey] Yeah, that'll be nice. Let's do that.

[Jeff] Shoes and boiling water and hydrating.

- [Stacey] Mmm-hmm. - [Jeff] Yeah?

Today, we decided to make good use of the oryx pelt

and make some shoes. We have migration coming up,

and it's going to be a huge advantage

against not only the other survivalists

but for our own personal well-being.

This new location, we don't know what it's going to be like,

we don't know what kind of vegetation or resources or water it has,

but I can tell you this.

Not a whole lot of cons to moving from this place.

'Cause we're up in the highlands,

and there's not a whole lot up here.

This is where you would cast out the infidels.

[Jeff] I'm really bad at arts and crafts hour.

[Stacey] So, first, you want to poke a hole on each side.

[Jeff] So, what I'm thinking is like this.

[Stacey] I was thinking like that.

[Jeff] Oh, more further out.

It'll keep the shoe tighter.

Yeah. You're right, that will help.

Long-term strategy between Jeff and I

would be just to make it to 21 days and see what happens.

He does perceive me as a lesser skilled survivalist.

So, I do feel in this partnership that I'm being underestimated.

That's pretty nice.

[Jeff] That looks sweet.

Whoo! How about that?

We got shoes, baby!

- Cheers. Clink me. - [Stacey] We got, like...

[Imitates clinking]

Oh, that feels good.

[Jeff] Isn't that nice?

Game freaking changer.

[Cheerful guitar music playing]

[Jeff] Things are looking up.

[Bird cawing]

[Dan] Like a little snake stew.

[Cheeny] Mmm! [Chuckles]

[Dan] Yeah.

That about half where my finger goes?

Um, yeah.

I'm going to pull.

Honestly, it feels pretty good to kill something out here.

Oh, there's more meat than I thought.

- Oh, like a little chicken. - Here, pick one.

Ah, I'll go with this part.

Okay.

And it feels good to get a little more food,

but that was a huge score.

Okay. That's some meat.

- Oh, it's really good. - Yeah.

Thanks, little puffadder.

[Suspenseful music playing]

Okay, so...

The camp's here.

Go down past where the monkey fruit was hang a right for north,

and then go to this location. Time to get moving.

[Narrator] Migration day is the next phase

to determine who will be the last one standing.

It is designed to test critical primitive survival skills

like tracking, endurance and animal trapping.

Once they arrive at an acacia tree,

they'll receive a map that shows the opportunities and challenges ahead.

[Wes moaning in pain] Acacia thorns.

Thorns are beastly.

All right, let's make tracks.

I got two of the knives,

I got... one of the maps,

I got my mother-in-law's tongue.

This looks like corkwood.

It's day seven.

It's migration day. I'm a little nervous

that, you know, not going to be able to find the spot,

or we're not going to find the right trail.

[Jeff] Okay, I've got my monkey fruit.

I've got the impala jerky.

I've got two of the knives

and I've got the oryx hide.

I think it was a pretty good idea

about making shoes for our journey.

We're going to move faster than everybody else.

We're going to have less injury than everybody else.

It's going to improve our capabilities greatly.

[Jeff] Let's hit the road.

The path is this way.

- Your feet doing good? - [Stacey] Yes.

- I'm ready. - [Waz] You're ready?

I'm ready, dude.

[Gary] Day seven, it's here.

Christmas. We get to go to the new location.

My feet are ready to rock and roll.

- Look at that. - Heats all of them.

[Gary] I don't even know what's going to be at the spot.

So I'm going to be ready

to start a fire right away,

as soon as we get there.

And Waz is going to start looking for things

and get all the items.

- [Waz] All right, let's go. - Oh, okay.

[Sarah panting] So many ants.

- [Steven] Crazy ant bed. - Yep.

[Steven] First migration yet.

We've never done this before.

This is a brand new thing.

So we really don't know what to expect.

- Let's bust this camp. - [Sarah] Yup.

[Sarah] We're hopeful for a new terrain,

but we know that we might also end up

somewhere even worse than where we're at right now.

[Sarah panting] [Bleep]

- It's that way. - [Steven] This way?

[Sarah] Yup.

[Cheeny] You know we have to beat Jeff to everything.

[Dan] We have to beat Jeff [chuckles] To everything.

He's the one that's racing around.

[Dan] Jeff is, definitely, not only our biggest competitor,

someone that could win this competition.

Right now, our group strategy

is to try to split up, divide and conquer.

Get to some of these caches before Jeff does.

So Jeff can't hoard everything this time.

Adios shelter.

- [Dan] All right. - Ready.

- [Dan] Let's roll. - Let's get out of here.

All right.

Move on.

[Matt] Jeff has been a weasel

hoarding materials,

trying to gain power over others.

Sometimes a weasel needs some little bit of his own medicine.

So, Jeff...

Karma comes at you, man.

So this point here,

it's cutting across straight through this trail.

This is straight.

[Jeff] Whenever I see an "X" or an arrow, Stacey,

I'm going to point it out.

Arrow, right here.

- [Stacey] "X"... - [Jeff] We're on the right track.

[Jeff] At this first location, we found

every single item we looked for.

Which is amazing.

And it worked out pretty flawlessly.

But now I feel like we kind of have a target on our back.

We woke everyone up.

We put them on notice that,

"hey, you know, Jeff and Stacey, they got game."

[Stacey] Closing in.

[Jeff] Yes, we are.

[Jeff] But now the game really begins.

This is going to be all-out competition.

All right. Go, go, go. Let's roll.

[Sarah] Onward.

Go on. Let's do this.

[Gary] We know Jeff's agenda.

So everybody else, we got a plan.

It's that way.

And we're just going to execute it.

Just get to the spot as quick as we can.

Go get those items.

- How's it going? - [Man] Move fast!

- Go, go, go. - All right.

-[Stacey panting] -[Jeff] Your feet doing good?

- [Stacey] Yes. - [Jeff] Mine, too.

[Jeff] I'm very pleased

at what we've been able to do these first seven days.

But I'm also very aware

of the challenges that still face us.

I'm not taking anything for granted.

The dangers out here are very real.

And the competition out here is very stout.

We have to be on our game

if we want to continue this level of domination.

- [Stacey] Closing in. - Yes, we are.

[Jeff] These shoes now allow us to cover

more ground quicker than our competition.

It's going to give us a leg up

in getting to the map location first.

[Jeff] All right. We are on the correct path.

- Turning this way. - [Stacey] Awesome.

- All right. - Here's the maps.

- We got them. - Yes.

- [Jeff] Yeah. - [Stacey breathes heavily]

Let's double check they are all the same.

- Yup. They are identical. - [Stacey] They are all the same.

[Jeff] Okay. So...

From the map location,

it's this trail right here.

Get down this way.

- [Stacey] Read the back. - Okay.

"This map will lead you to your new survival location

with new opportunities and resources.

Build a camp wherever you wish.

First come, first serve."

[Narrator] Using their map,

teams must navigate to an acacia tree

and the next phase of the competition.

Each team will need to pass a test

at primitive survival skills

by building a working figure four deadfall trap.

Only when they've completed this task

can they advance to zone two

of the last one standing challenge.

Okay. So this area,

that's where we build the deadfall...

- uh-huh. - With fruit.

Good thing we have some fruit.

In the back of the map it says that

we had to complete a deadfall challenge.

That made me feel a little nervous,

because my deadfalls are not that great.

And I'm hoping that Jeff is good at deadfalls.

[Jeff] This challenge, it started at 12 people.

It's going to end up one.

This is what this is all about.

It's about being the best,

and overcoming absolutely everything,

including your competition.

"must work with your partner

in the highlighted area.

Test your trap. Bait it with fruit,

before moving on to collect your new camp map

at the acacia thorn tree."

I'm going to get down to the highlighted area,

but if I don't have monkey fruit,

I can't bait the trap and then move on from there.

[Pants] So...

I'mma go back here. Let me get to the monkey fruit tree.

Son of a bitch.

That's what I meant. Got to be focused.

You got to do it all right first time.

Here I am, letting [bleep] slip.

[Bleep]

[Waz] Dude.

There they are.

Right. Let's have a look at this.

- All right. - We just came in on this trail.

If we travel direct north, we're looking for this big tree.

[Matt] Fancy to meet you around these parts.

Eeny, meeny, miny, moe.

[Gary] There is a lot of racing against the clock.

And racing against each other.

There's competition happening right now.

- [Waz] Now see you in a bit. - All right.

So, there is really no other way about this,

but straight.

At this point,

it's, for me, it's not necessarily a race

as it is just to get from point a to point B,

safely, securely and to the best of my ability.

Wrong move out here now

could take me out. That's terrifying.

Onto to the next. [Exhales]

[Jeff] We're heading due east now,

and then it's going to shoot

almost due north.

Stacey and I are in the lead.

If this were a sportscar race,

we'd have a one-lap lead over the competition.

We are all racing this morning.

And so we picked up our pace,

heading to the figure four area.

[Jeff] When we get there,

what do you think about

you cutting open some of this monkey fruit

and I'll get started on the figure four?

[Stacey] Okay.

Here's a monkey fruit.

All right, we're solid.

We're solid.

Now let's get back to it.

I started out, basically, in second place,

getting to the maps and then after

finding out that I needed monkey fruit,

it set me back to last.

But I'm okay with that.

You know what? Now I have people to follow.

To obtain fish bait, you must work with your partner.

[Dan] Hey, check this out. It's right here.

[Cheeny] Yeah, just right here.

"You make a figure four deadfall trap.

Bait it with fruit."

Well, we've got plenty of fruit

and we know how to do a figure four, so...

We need to go from the map straight down...

yeah, boy.

[Wes] Hey, guys.

[Sarah] Okay. Well, this will be interesting.

All right.

[Waz] How's it looking?

Uh, feel like we're turning.

Does that go straight or does that go straight?

[Waz] This forks right.

[Waz] In this sort of a maze,

you know you're walking

generally in the right direction.

But there's game trails and then there's walking trails

and some of them look identical to each other.

[Gary] What do you think? This way or that way?

[Waz] It doesn't look very well-trodden, over there, Gary.

[Gary] No. I don't know if it's it.

[Matt] Oh, man. Little bog-like here.

[Waz] What are your thoughts here, Matt?

[Matt] You know, it looks like

about three or four different ways

that the trail branches off.

On the map here, it looks like

this trail should be straight downhill

from where we picked those maps up, guys.

Yeah, I think we're getting a little, little closer.

So, we should start seeing

a little daylight on the side.

[Matt] Definitely there's nothing I'd like more

than to beat Jeff.

[Steven] It's hot. Terrain's hard.

[Cheeny] It's very hot out today.

[Sarah] The grass sucks because you can't see the thorns.

[Dan] Yeah, more thorns the further down you get.

Think this is it?

This could be the highlighted area on the map?

[Cheeny] Yeah.

Oh, what a gaggle [bleep] this is.

[Dan] I think it's this tree right up here.

See that tree right there?

[Matt] Yeah, definitely that tree.

We all, pretty much, arrive

about the exact same time.

But Jeff is nowhere to be seen.

[Matt] So we need to make a figure four.

All right.

Let's do this.

[Jeff grunts] Ah, [bleep].

- [Stacey grunts] - You all right?

- You okay? - [Stacey] Yeah, yeah.

There's a lot of thorns.

[Jeff grunts] [Bleep].

It seems like there's trails everywhere.

[Stacey] Maybe right here, Jeff?

[Jeff] Um, there's something that opens up here.

Yeah, this one, maybe?

- [Stacey] Straight ahead? Left? - Yeah.

This one? Okay.

[Stacey] We are going along on these trails

to try to make it to the right tree.

We got, kind of, lost on some

really awful thorny trails.

Considering our whole strategy was to be first,

it's really frustrating.

[Jeff] I think this is what it was showing on the map,

where these trails get squirrely.

[Jeff] The trails get harder to see

and they start weaving and winding.

And Stacey and I, unfortunately,

we took a wrong turn.

[Jeff] It, kind of, it cuts through over here.

I think this is it.

Oh, [bleep].

We're down by the river.

So this really, really sucks.

Are you kidding me?

[Jeff] I think this is what it was showing on the map.

It cuts through over here.

I think this is it.

Oh, [bleep].

We're down by the river.

[Jeff] Stacey and I have had a tough morning.

We've actually took a trail where we got lost.

The wrong detour we took

moved us from first to last.

[Jeff] So we're here.

[Stacey] Oh, [bleep].

We lost time, really.

One hundred, 33, 66...

About 166 paces till the trail turns

almost due... Due south.

Adapt and overcome, yeah?

Okay. That's okay.

That's okay.

[Matt] You know, the figure four deadfall,

looks like a figure four,

designed to hold a rock up.

It's very handy because this is passive way to hunt

and get food while you're out doing something else.

Your figure four's doing it for you.

You don't have to spend many calories.

Once you got it set, it's set.

[Narrator] Before they can advance to

zone two, of the competition,

each time must test their

primitive survival skills

by building a deadfall trap

using three sticks and a rock.

Each stick is notched precisely.

The notch on the lever stick and the trigger stick

fit in the main support.

A heavy rock creates tension,

holding the sticks in the shape of a figure four.

When an animal eats the bait off the trigger stick,

it collapses, causing the rock to fall on the prey.

It's good to have these traps, they're passive hunting.

[Waz] Well, to put it in perspective, in Montana,

a figure four trap that we made,

that figure four trap caught a little mouse.

- [Man] Oh! - [Waz] Yay!

[Waz] That little mouse turned into a big trap.

Turned into two crawdads.

[Waz] We got one each! A little lobster dinner.

[Waz] Based off one little figure four trap.

- [Man] Whoo! - [Waz] There we go.

The thing about these deadfall traps is,

- they are pretty finicky. - [Gary] Yeah, I know.

[Waz] You want it to be finicky.

Otherwise, it's not going to trigger when the animal comes.

But that also means that making it

is a little bit of a finicky process.

[Dan] I'm wishing we had more than one knife

so I could assist with the build a little bit.

- But other than that. - [Cheeny] It's all good, buddy.

[Jeff] This is it.

Oh, what's up everybody?

Good morning.

[Jeff] We make our way to the figure four tree.

And, [laughs softly] Sure as hell,

everyone else is already there.

But this is a 45-day journey

and staying calm under pressure

is what's going to get you to the end.

[Sighs] Okay.

- Here you go. - Cool, thanks, man.

Even something as simple as a figure four

is actually pretty complex,

when you think of all the parts

and all of the angles and everything like that.

And when the pressure's on, it can be kind of hard.

Um, yeah, is that notch good enough over here?

Oh, yeah. Saw that a little bit more.

Does the top need to go down, too?

Uh, no. I think just right here.

Oh. It looks pretty good.

[Sarah] Here.

You know, it looks like, pretty much...

I think we're kind of ahead of the game right now.

[Sarah] Hmm, that's nice.

Start, just measure things out

- a little closer. - [Steven] Yup.

- [Sarah] Okay. - [Steven] Sure.

[Steven] So, I knew exactly what we needed.

The type of rock we needed,

the size of the sticks,

and Sarah was right there with me.

She knew where the notches need to be.

You know, it looks easier than it is.

And a lot of people were having difficulty with it.

Normally when you make these,

we're not right in a rush, but,

it is doable by myself.

I've done a lot of them.

[Matt] You know, making a figure four deadfall trap

is survival 101.

I've used it hundreds of times.

And I've caught probably more animals

in figure four deadfall

than I've, maybe even, shot with a bow.

Baited with bait.

Good luck, ladies and gentlemen.

Right now, I'm the first one done,

and if I got done anything less than first,

I would have been upset with myself.

But that allows me

to actually head down here.

Get first pick of what's...

Of what the area's like

and, start assessing what's on the new map.

Utilize a little bit of ledge right here.

And this needs to be down a little.

Got it!

[Sarah] I can tell that other people are a little panicked.

But my focus is entirely

on what's in front of me,

and making sure that Steven and I accomplish our goal.

[Sarah] All right, all set.

Off we go. [Exhales]

[Steven] Okay, let's go.

[Sarah] But on the bright side,

we managed to knock it out

and everything came together like buttcheeks.

[Panting]

So, this is the first map.

Let's see what it says.

"Continue walking to earn more resources in a new environment."

[Narrator] This is zone two.

On the banks of the Umzimkulu river.

The survivalists will spend the next seven days

in a sub-tropical forest,

where game include antelope,

porcupine, large reptiles

and abundant fish.

Mixed woodlands on the walls of the gorge

descend to a river ecosystem

where predators abound,

including spitting cobras

and black mamba,

whose venom is so lethal,

just two drops is fatal to an adult human.

"Traverse the eddies to find fishing assets.

Track three porcupines to find survival tools.

Search the rocks and find a survival tool.

Pick your migration map up day 14."

[Steven] Hey!

-[Steven sighs] -All right, bud, we got a little expedition.

- If you want... - yeah.

I can give you a little rundown, bud.

[Matt reading]

[Narrator] To find the tools in the wooded areas,

survivalists must use their tracking skills

to find signs of porcupine in the area

marked by the porcupine symbol on the map.

[Matt] Now this, if we take this

- and we can stay on this trail... - Yeah.

[Matt] And we try to stay

as straight as we can north,

- I think... - I think that's the best bet.

- We find that porcupine. - Yup.

You know, at this point,

- we're all together right here. - Yup.

- So let's see what we can find together. - Hell, yeah.

[Narrator] To increase their chance of success,

survivalists will compete

to find eight survival tools.

Four have been hidden in wooded areas,

and four in various places near the water.

The location of these items

is marked by a fish hook

and survival tool icons on the map.

[Steven] All right. Let's do this.

After Jeff had tried to go out and take every single cache,

now, it's an interesting, kind of, camaraderie

to make sure that one person

doesn't monopolize it all.

[Sarah] So are we gonna pick a camp location first

- and then... - [Steven] I say let's go

and get our stuff right now.

- [Sarah] Okay. - [Steven] 'Cause we're ahead of the game.

[Sarah] Yeah.

[Wes] I'm feeling like I'm very close to getting this.

Usually, when you make a trap like this,

you're not under a massive amount of pressure.

You're not competing with your good friends.

You're just making a trap.

Out?

Out.

I got all my stuff. Didn't leave anything behind.

Okay.

It feels great to be in the top three

for making deadfall trap.

I mean, I practice.

I know what I'm doing.

Building this deadfall,

it's going to shift the advantage

from people who may be flashing fast

to people who have a skillset in survival.

But knowing how to make

a figure four deadfall trap,

those are some basics that you really need to know.

And I'm seeing some people

lagging behind in that department.

Everything's okay?

- [Dan and Cheeny] Yeah. - All right.

And it's very surprising to me.

[Stacey] We need to hurry up.

- Let's finish this. - Okay.

[Sarah] Oh, my God.

So, it says, "track three porcupines

to find survival tools."

[Narrator] The African porcupine has fish hook quills

that lodge into any enemy's skin,

resulting in wounds that can disable

or kill the predator.

- So, it's got to be close. - [Steven] Yeah.

Yeah. Right in this area. [Exhales]

[Steven] So I'm looking for broken branches.

I'm looking for quills.

Um, I'm looking...

They have, like, almost rodent prints.

So it's almost like a racoon but bigger.

[Matt] Got to be back a little bit.

[Sarah] I know. It's got to be back in this.

[Sarah] I figured that we'd be looking for

either tracks or, possibly, even quills.

Porcupines out here have some of the largest quills

of any species of porcupine in the world.

And they shed them quite often.

So, it's not atypical for them

to leave a trail of their quills

as they're walking around.

[Sarah] All right. Not seeing any porcupine sign.

[Steven] Yeah.

I think we're gonna have to backtrack back up there.

[Grunts]

[Sighs] Where are we right now?

[Steven] You see those big ol' rocks?

[Sarah] Yes, those further up?

[Steven] Is that the fishing assets?

- It's got to be the spot. - [Sarah] Yeah.

[Matt] What's up?

- Did you find them? - No.

All right, so, on this map,

"work together to traverse the eddies

to find fishing assets."

[Narrator] There are three fishing kits

hidden on the rocks of the river.

Another survival item is hidden on the bank.

[Matt] You want to cross?

- [Steven] Yeah. - [Sarah] Yeah, I want to cross.

[Matt] Those porcupine...

I'm going to go back up and look at those.

- Yeah. - All right, I'm gonna keep looking for these.

- All right. - I'll let you know what I find.

All right, cool buddy.

[Steven] We decide to split up.

Matt's going to stick on the porcupine tracks.

We're going to head for the fishing stuff.

That's the most important asset out here.

We are on the water and there's catfish.

It's the fastest, easiest protein source

anywhere on the planet.

[Steven] All right, work together to traverse the eddies

to find fishing assets.

- Good lord. That's crazy. - [Sarah] Oh, boy!

So this is getting interesting.

- [Cheeny] Would it go this way? Yeah, just go ahead. - [Dan] Yep.

[Gary] Put it on, like lay it on the top.

If you go like that, I'll tell you the way to hook.

Goes here, and then that pushes on that.

[Jeff] So I need to notch this and fit it perfectly.

'Cause it needs to stick in here.

[Dan] That's it. Put a fruit on it.

Trip it.

Reset it. We gotta reset it.

[Cheeny] Yeah, be carefully.

- [Dan] Good. - [Cheeny] Yeah.

- Let's roll. - [Dan] That'll work.

[Cheeny] Oh, I got a wicked cramp. Oh.

Ooh, sorry, Dan, I'm moving as fast as I can but I gotta a side cramp.

We started bookin' it,

and I get this awful side cramp

that just goes up the whole right side of my body.

[Groans] Oh [bleep]!

The faster I go,

the more it hurts, and I can't breathe.

[Bleep] It's going up to my boobs.

[Groans]

You okay?

[Narrator] With most now finished with the trap,

only two teams remain.

[Gary] Did you flatten this side of that?

- [Gary] Yeah, they're both flattened. I just... - [Waz] This side?

- Notch a little more. - Right on.

- [Gary] How you feeling? - [Waz] Disappointed how long it's taking, but...

- It's all right. - Honestly not gonna let that get to me

'cause it's not gonna help the situation.

Just gonna keep doing what I do.

[Waz] If you get flustered, if you get upset,

if you get anxious, if you get stressed,

what is that giving to the task I'm trying to complete?

You gotta stay calm so you can focus on

the thing that's in front of you.

So that your brain's working the right way

and get it completed.

[Waz] I think we're good like that.

[Gary] Okay, well, uh, I can do the fruit.

Yeah. I gotta... I gotta this.

This'll sit on there no matter what.

We gotta set it up again.

You balance it, you balance it.

We're good. There we go.

- Don't [bleep] touch it. - [Both laugh]

[Gary] All right, we're good. Good going.

Dude?

[Jeff] Oh, [bleep]

Okay. All right.

[Stacey] You've got them backwards.

[Jeff] Oh, hold on. I had it backwards.

[Stacey] Sure you wanna go with that,

and not cut a new one?

I mean, you're thinking about just starting from scratch?

- [Stacey] Yeah. - [Jeff] Oh [bleep].

Okay. All right.

[Stacey] Before you know it we are last,

and tensions are high.

Jeff's starting to feel defeated and,

beat down, and frustrated.

- Sometimes we're first, sometimes we're last. - [Jeff] Okay.

Just gotta rest it there on the stick.

[Jeff] It is an interesting challenge.

It's one of those things that we all have in our toolbox.

But, uh, maybe we haven't used in a couple of years or so.

And we get it set again.

Okay. And then, animal would come in for the bait, trip it.

Okay.

Okay, and then...

[Stacey] Put the bait where it needs to be.

[Jeff] ...Put the bait right under the trigger stick.

- [Stacey] Under the rock. - [Jeff] Animal will come in,

- um, yeah, that can also act as a trigger stick. - [Stacey] Yep.

All right, there we go.

- [Bleep] Deadfall set. - [Stacey] Finally, Jesus.

We got it.

Mama said, there'd be days like this.

- We're gonna stay positive. We got this. - That's right.

Let's go get our map.

[Gasps]

This was stressful.

This is nothing I've ever felt on any Naked and Afraid challenge before.

I'm great at competing against the environment.

But now, when you're competing against

all these other survival experts side-by-side.

This is nuts.

[Stacey] It's our struggles that become our achievements.

- Right? - [Jeff] That's right.

That's the first thing you told me, basically.

[Steven] All right.

Pretty sure, it's those rocks up there.

[Sarah] Yeah, that sure looks like it.

[Steven] It's gotta be the spot.

I think on that far bank is where it's gonna be.

- [Sarah] Yeah. - [Steven] We got these like trifecta rocks going.

And right across, see, it's got that up rock right there.

- Yeah. - See this one.

- Yeah it's like a little bump. - So it has to be right there.

[Sarah] Sure.

Fast moving water.

- [Steven] Yeah, def. - And there's no definitive way to cross.

- [Steven] This is a dangerous area to cross right here. - [Sarah] Yeah.

Especially with these rapids.

- [Sarah] Yeah. - [Steven] Literally, pin you under a rock and you're done.

And this is a pivotal move.

Yeah, I think we're gonna have to move up river...

- [Steven] Move up river. - Cross from up there.

Yeah, keep our eye on the prize.

This rock formation literally right across,

looks almost identical to this.

Even the shadows on the side of it.

It looks like right behind that is where our cache is.

- But we gotta hurry because people are right on our asses. - Yeah.

- [Steven] Cook pot away. - [Sarah] Okay, let's go.

[Steven] The fishing tools are across this river.

And it's not some, like lazy river

in a water park with like, inner tubes, and like,

people drinking pina coladas.

It's like raging, death,

river rapids with,

you know, bone crushing boulders.

It's... it's terrifying.

[Narrator] The swift current of these class three rapids

contains numerous hazard areas,

and waves that exceed three feet in height.

- All right. You ready? - Yeah.

[Steven] There's very few smart ways

to cross a river like that in anything.

Whether you're in a raft

or a canoe, an inner tube,

there's really no safe way.

Slippery rock right here.

- [Sarah] Steven. - I know, but I'm going in a way where...

- Okay. - We're not like, neck deep in water.

Kind of swirly right here.

[Sarah] Yeah. I can see that.

Oh, boy.

- Rock right here. Rock right there. - [Sarah] Got it.

[Steven] Crossing this river is a terrifying thought.

It's death. Crossing this river might be my downfall.

- Whoa! You good? - Yeah.

Come on.

[Groans]

Oh, my God.

Oh [bleep]

[Gulps water]

[Steven] Sarah!

[Sarah] Come on.

[Groans]

Oh, my God.

Oh [bleep]

Steven!

[Steven] Sarah!

[Gulps water]

Sarah!

[Groans]

Good lord.

Ha ha ha.

[Steven] As soon as I got to the other side of the river,

she got swept downstream.

- She made it across. - [Howls]

[Steven] And now,

my blinders are finding these fishing tools.

Uh, work together to traverse the eddies

to find fishing assets.

Steven! I think it might be in here.

Sarah!

- Do you see it? - Hold up.

I think I found it.

- [Howls] Found it. - [Steven] Got it?

Good job, girl.

[Sarah] I tried to clamber up

the rock, but I'm a little short

and I'm certainly exhausted.

- You got it? - [Steven] Yeah, I can get it.

There you go.

- Good job, hon. - Hell yeah.

You know I kept looking for a bag.

- 'Cause everything been in a bag. - [Sarah] Yeah.

- Yeah. - Looks like we got four hooks,

not a whole lot of monofilament, but,

- let's go up there and cross. - Yeah.

[Steven] That was [bleep] sketch as [bleep].

[Gary] So what do you say, we find

a camp spot, and then I'll start making a fire,

and you could scout.

- [Waz] Yeah, I like it. It's a good plan. - [Gary] All right.

Waz and I have a system,

he is good at reconnaissance,

going out and finding trails, and looking for stuff.

And I'm good with the shelter, I'm good at fire.

Here's some canopy, a tree.

There's an open area here with rocks.

We gotta do some work,

but this spot's already kinda cleared.

Tell me what you think about it in here?

[Waz] Dude, to me, I really don't care.

I can sleep anywhere, you know.

I'm gonna leave our stuff right here.

I'm gonna let you look for a camp site.

I'm gonna go for a walk.

- [Gary] You got it, brother. - [Waz] Yeah.

This right here is snake country.

I put my stuff down.

We claimed that spot,

and I'm heading down to try and get these fishing hooks.

[Narrator] There are three sets of fishing assets hidden in the rocks.

With one set found by Steven and Sarah,

two more remain.

[Waz] Slippery as [bleep].

[Jeff] How do we wanna do this now?

- [Stacey] I think we need to head to the river. - [Jeff] Go near the water.

- Okay. - [Stacey] It looks like there's only three new options

for people here.

[Jeff] I think, we should go after the fishing ones first, right?

[Stacey] Yeah.

Let's head to the river together.

Yeah, and when we're down there,

you feel like, you don't need the map any more

then we'll split.

So the bad news, Stacey and I were last in getting the deadfall setup.

So we're here,

got 25 paces... so maybe 50 paces to the next crossing.

But I'm not worried because I know

Stacey and I still have the navigational advantage,

once we get back on the right trails.

It almost looks like, the fishing thing is like...

[Stacey] Out there on a rock.

[Jeff] ...Above the cliffs or something.

- It's on that sand bar, I think. - Mm-hmm.

I'm gonna go for them,

and I'm gonna leave this with you

to pick, uh, whatever location you want.

[Stacey] We need food.

'Cause energy's starting to run low.

We don't have enough calories

to... to do what we're supposed to be doing here.

Rock on, Stacey. Here's your map, girl.

I won't need that anymore.

So fishing kit would be an amazing

game changer for us.

[Jeff] There is,

some type of advanced survival item,

somewhere along this coast.

I have no idea where. This is crazy.

This is an excruciating search for this survival tool.

The map shows four rocks piled together.

And there is 100,000 rocks down on this water's edge.

And I don't know what I'm looking for.

I don't know if it's big, if it's small.

If it's orange or if it's white.

And I'm wondering, did somebody already find it?

Um, if so,

I'm in the same position, everyone was... else was in last week.

I don't know what the shape is,

I don't know if it's hidden under a rock

or on top of a rock.

Dear father in heaven,

I'm in over my head here.

Please bless me and help me to find this item.

This I say in the name of Jesus Christ. Amen.

Imagine if you dropped your car keys out here,

you would probably spend three hours looking for them,

and that's my dilemma right now.

[Cheeny exhales]

[Dan] Is this the gorge?

[Cheeny] Doesn't look like a gorge.

[Exhales]

- [Dan] You okay, Cheeny? - [Cheeny] No, dude. I have a wicked cramp.

I've been struggling through the woods and I can't breathe.

[Exhales tiredly]

My breathing pattern's different.

I'm dehydrated as well.

And the faster I go,

the more this awful side cramp hurts.

Oh, Jesus. Dan, you gotta slow down.

- [Dan] Sorry. - [Cheeny] I know, the faster I walk

the more I cramp up.

[Groans]

'Cause I know with something like this, you just gotta lay down.

[Dan] What you really need, honestly is,

to just find a sheltered location

- and sit down, and rest for a little while. - [Cheeny] Yeah.

- [Dan] You like up here? - [Cheeny] Sure.

- Want to find something soon though, I need to lie down. - [Dan] Yeah.

Didn't realize how bad it was,

she's even having trouble breathing because it's cramping so bad,

which is making me nervous.

If my partner taps that would take me out too.

- [Dan] This spot look good? - [Cheeny] Oh, my God, I just can't breathe.

[Exhales uneasily]

I can't breathe.

Oh, that makes it worse.

[Groans]

[Matt] And here we go.

Now I could take it

to the next level,

and I become the Alpha.

[Narrator] For this competition,

the PSR or primitive survival rating,

weighs an individual's survival skill,

and items collected to determine

the likelihood of becoming the last one standing.

[Jeff] This one's a fun one, huh?

[Narrator] Matt successfully retrieved two bows by himself.

[Gasps]

[Narrator] As well as finishing first with a deadfall trap.

Baited with bait.

[Narrator] These wins combined with his elite survival skills

takes his PSR up from 9.7 to 9.8.

We've lost time. Really.

[Narrator] With no new items,

poor navigation during competition...

[Stacey] You've got them backwards.

[Narrator] ...And a last place finish with a deadfall trap,

Jeff's PSR drops from 9.6 to 9.4.

- [Dan hoots] - [Screams]

[Narrator] Despite two food wins...

[Cheeny] God, I just can't breathe.

[Narrator] ...The punishing migration has taken its toll on Cheeny,

dropping her PSR from 8.0 to 7.8.

To see all of the survivalists PSR ratings

head over to discovery.Com/PSR.

[Cheeny groans]

I can't breathe.

God, it's like, all right here.

[Dan] What can I do for you?

-Nothing [chuckles].

- I think I just have to wait for this to stop. - Okay.

Take a breather for a little while.

[Cheeny exhales]

Not trying to be a pussy, I just can't breathe.

[Dan] No, not worried about that.

Take care of yourself.

- Hopefully I'll be back with something nice. - [Bird coos]

[Dan] We get to our location, and we find a sheltered spot.

We know there's a water source super close by.

But we're also in a competition

whilst racing against the clock.

And I know that there's a lot of people

already going for some of the tools,

down by the river, across the water.

But there's some other ones,

following the... the porcupine tracks.

[Groans] Ow [bleep] hell.

Thorns are worse here.

I couldn't find my way out of a wet paper bag.

Lost, I don't know where I'm going.

Make me mad. Mad as a wet hornet.

My confidence in this is zero.

My confidence in this whole map reading business

is a zero right now.

If I had a partner who was good in navigation,

and I mean, top notch.

Yeah, that'd be very helpful.

I am struggling to find what I need.

It's not... not a trail.

Water's down there.

If nothing else, I can get down there and make a camp.

You know what? Okay, this is an adventure.

Right? Survival adventure.

I'm going to the water.

At least there I'll have resources.

And I'll probably find somebody down at the water

who can, uh, dial me in.

[Wes] Hey there, Matt.

Wes, hey, what's up? You snuck up on me.

That only happens once in a while.

- It's just you? So... - Yeah. Yeah, yeah.

- Where do you think we're on the map? - [Wes] Man, I'm struggling.

- [Matt] Yeah. - Unless this is the big cross roads...

I think, this is the big cross road.

Steven's already going to cross

up the... trying to go across

- up there for some fishing gear. - [Wes] Okay.

- But see that spot where there is porcupine? - Yeah.

[Matt] So it says on here,

"track three porcupines to find survival tools."

So I can use some help on this one, buddy.

Let's do it, man.

I wanna help any way I can.

So Matt and I team up,

and we're going after the porcupine cache.

Now we are three, six... about 700 feet from the porcupines.

It's funny 'cause we're working against each other,

but we're working together to do it.

Do you want to set up a spot real quick, prep,

- and drop our stuff here? - Yeah.

[Matt] Already we've seen

Jeff going in, trying to hoard every item,

trying to play a game.

But I'm playing this game my way.

It's survival. But it's like,

"you know what? Let's work together."

Make sure nobody can steal my stuff.

I'm gonna establish it as my camp.

Now this hunt for the porcupine,

we're looking for tracks, for chews,

holes in the ground, and porcupine quills.

And African porcupines have these large hollow quills,

and that is a telltale sign that there is a porcupine.

[Dan] Know which way you're going?

[Wes] Um, we are in the same boat as you.

Trying to figure it out.

- [Dan] Find the porcupine thing? - [Wes] Yeah.

[Dan] Isn't the porcupine thing back that way?

You couldn't find the trail to it?

[Wes] Can't get to it from that there, so...

You mind if I...

- mind if I join you? - Come on, man.

[Dan] The three of us, linked up and together

we went on the hunt.

And that wasn't a problem with any of us.

You know, as long as Jeff doesn't have the stuff

and he's not hoarding it all.

We know we're gonna be fair,

we're gonna share it, whatever it is.

[Matt] All right, looks like I might have a little trail

going down, right here.

- [Wes] Yeah, I would say this is it. - [Matt] Yeah.

So I don't know which part of the map I'm in.

I wanna go and see if there's any chance of pulling up

these fish hooks or fishing tackle or whatever is out there.

Now you wouldn't realize how strong the water is,

especially when it's moving quick like that.

[Groans]

Searching for these items in the river,

it's, uh, challenging.

You can't see the rocks at the bottom of the water.

They're extremely slippery and mossy.

There's fears of smashing your ankle into rocks,

getting your foot stuck under there.

The water pushing you over, hitting your head on a rock.

There's so many things that could do go wrong.

[Gasps]

So I'm trying to take my time.

Use my hands to balance myself.

'Cause I don't wanna end this challenge

with a couple of silly steps.

- You find anything? - Got it.

[Waz] What?

As I'm looking for hooks, I look upstream.

They look like, they're looking for same thing I'm looking for,

but the water's so loud.

What?

Well, he's on the struggle bus now.

[Waz] First time I fell, actually, had to swim across a little bit,

and just grab onto a rock. But I grabbed onto that rock,

and it was only by my fingertips.

It was like a scene out of cliffhanger.

[Bleep]

- Go up a little bit more? - Yeah.

[Jeff] Steven!

Did you guys... did you find the...

- [Steven] Yeah, found it. - [Sarah] Yeah, sure we did.

- [Jeff] You got it? - [Both] Yeah.

[Bleep]

[Jeff] That sucks.

Come over, let's join together.

Well, I don't know about that.

[Jeff] I'm getting the picture that

I may be on people's radar

as, uh, as the top dog

they want eliminated from this challenge.

And if that's the case,

then there's no way I'm gonna be able

to play this entire game nice

when everyone is playing dirty against me.

$100,000 is on the line and I know,

most of these people here regardless of what they say,

they would do anything to walk out of here the winner.

I don't trust anybody but myself.

Well, this is one of those moments.

They left their items behind,

and they're across the river.

And I could either take them right now,

keep 'em,

or go down river, and chuck them in the river.

They wouldn't... they'd never know.

Let's see what they got here.

Okay, empty pot,

and a [bleep] machete.

Don't know why Jeff's following us.

Right now I could eliminate

two of my competitors. Right now.
