Of all the people to bail Hayley out of jail

for literally trying to kill Bill,

why in the world does it have to be my mama?

After the way I helped you,

we're friends forever now, girlie.

Vanessa's in the emergency room.

NICOLE: What? Why?

I thought Joey was protecting you.

He is.

You could have been killed.

I'm not taking a plea deal.

- And why is that? - I know

what Martin did on that dark, dreary road.

That little con has the fate of our family in her hands.

MARTIN: Jacob is great at his job.

We just have to be patient.

In my experience,

patience is a very bad strategy.

Don't tell me you're doomscrolling again.

I just...

I can't get my mind off of the Lia situation.

Have you heard anything else from Shonda or Kendra?

Yeah.

They're working to convince the Coleman campaign

to keep your questioning in Lia's death private.

I'm sorry this is impacting your work.

Enough of that.

Today is about football and fun.

Mm. And our boy.

And his first homecoming as a Banneker man.

The fifth generation to choose

one of the most prestigious HBCUs in the country.

Great-Granddad Paul attended Banneker

and a lot of the Ivies weren't accepting Black students.

Banneker provided a pathway.

Granddad was there at the height of the civil rights movement.

That's where he learned to foster community,

take pride in our culture, and to fight for opportunity.

Things he passed down to us.

And now Tyrell is blessed to carry on that legacy.

I think we're the blessed ones.

God brought those little, amazing people in our lives,

and we created family.

So this is what you guys have been up to

since I've been gone?

- Hey! - Hey!

Here you are.

Hi, honey.

I stopped by the house to pick you up,

but Jan pointed me here.

Is that what you're wearing to the Duprees'?

About that... I'm so sorry,

but I'm not feeling up

to celebrating homecoming this year.

- What? - Why don't you go without me?
