[eerie music]

[child babbling]

- [Leah] Lyle, honey.

Come here, Lyle honey.

- It's not something you'll find in many

of the Victorians, there's one there

in the master bedroom too and this one

is your classic marble.

- This is the two bedroom?

- Yup.

Like I said, you guys are lucky.

New to town and lucky.

So how did you even find out about this place?

- Hey Lyle, Lyle come over here with mommy okay.

- Why hey little sweetheart.

Oh, garden access is communal and

it's through the ground floor.

[whispering inaudibly]

Just where the laundry and the machines are.

- Lyle honey.

- [Karen] No drawing at night.

The dryer makes a terrible racket.

Oh, this window.

[grunts]

They're the models.

There's an apartment on four, they call it

a model's apartment, a bunch of them

live together from the same agency

and they are not a bunch catalog girls.

A bunch of models should be

a little plus for you guys huh?

Oh, I 'm just kidding. [chuckles]

So where are we?

- I uh, Lyle?

June, do you have her?

- [June] She's fine, she's fine.

There's another room back here,

it looks like a closet.

- Well technically it's a walk-in but--

- [June] Or a perfect record room.

- Or maybe a second baby's room.

- Oh, I guess I am showing a little.

- Or maybe I'm just extra aware these days.

I'm trying right now too.

Yup, every month.

That, room has never been a nursery before.

It's just what this place needs.

Pitter patter, pitter patter. [laughing]

Hey, wouldn't it be crazy if we

were both pregnant at the same time?

[sighs]

We could be stroller buddies.

- Yeah. [polite chuckling]

- I mean, I live just one floor below.

We could walk our little boys or

our little girls to the park everyday.

- Well better make it little girls.

- Really?

- Yeah, I just found out.

- Found out what?

- I was gonna wait to tell you

until we were settled, make a surprise.

- What?

- Better make it pink, whoop whoop.

[chuckling]

- What?

- [Leah] Dr. Fey said that she was wrong,

it's not a boy, it's another little girl.

June?

Come here sweetie.

[grunts, chuckles]

She's like a Victorian father, just obsessed

with that first born son, first born son--

- [June] We'll take it.

I mean come on, I'll never hear the end of it right?

You know, french doors, the french doors.

- Really?

- We'll take it, yeah.

[Lyle speaks unintelligibly]

- Okay?

- Okay.

[chuckling] - Okay.

- Okay, now we get to go find where the doggie's gonna sleep.

- Alright, but I take the record room.

- I want the record room.

- [June] No, what would you put in a record room?

[laughing]

- I have records.

- I knew it.

- [June] We have a new place.

[whimsical piano music]

- [Leah] She said that she's trying to get pregnant.

- [June] So?

- [Leah] So, June she's like 60.

- [June] You said you were gonna cool

about our move to New York.

- [Leah] Oh my God, that's so unfair.

[Lyle babbling]

- [June] Hey Lyle, you wanna see the rest?

You wanna look at out new house?

Where are you?

- In the back room.

- Hey.

You're not supposed to be carrying things right?

No boxes. [chuckling]

- Are you sure we can afford this?

- I told you, you should trust me, right?

Three's is gonna be huge, I'm gonna be huge.

- This could be a baby room, if we

get rid of that wallpaper.

Why are you still disappointed we're not having a boy?

June?

- [June] I'm gonna throw this away I think.

[Lyle babbling]

- Lyle honey, stay in here with me, you know that.

[Lyle babbling]

You're cute with you horse and your spoon.

[paper ripping]

[little footsteps running away] - Lyle!

[little footsteps running away]

[little footsteps]

Hey how did you find this place?

- [June] What?

- The listing.

- [June] Arlene told me about it.

I need to get to the studio.

- What?

It's Saturday, you're leaving?

- [June] Watch out monkey!

Everybody's fighting me on Three's.

You should call 'em, get 'em to visit.

I won't be late.

[keys jingle]

[Lyle babbling]

- Hi my monkey.

Morning.

[Lyle babbling, little footsteps]

[Lyle babbling]

Honey what are you talking to?

Lyle, stay in here.

Oh, our horsey, thank you.

[inaudible speech]

- [Lyle÷} Whas that?

[Lyle babbling]

Whas that?

- [Karen] Oh, I'm sorry, do you mind helping?

I'm not supposed to be lifting

heavy things in my condition.

At least that's what the doctor says.

Oh I can't wait until this second trimester is over.

Caution, caution, that's what I keep hearing.

[Lyle squealing]

- Ha ha ha ha ha!

[Lyle squealing]

[growls playfully]

[phone buzzing]

- Here's your horsey, gotta get the phone.

Hey, living room unpacked.

Well, kinda.

Um, so when are you coming home?

No, no, I just, it's just, it's the land lady.

I, I think she's pretending to be pregnant.

No, no, I love the place I, what?

You're kidding.

How late?

Okay.

[eerie music]

[Lyle squealing]

[Lyle screaming]

Lyle!

Honey, don't scream like that or you're

going to make mommy go insane.

- [Lyle] Bweee.

- That's a pretty tree.

[Lyle babbling]

Just me and you again.

Okay, shall we unpack this box?

Let's see what's in here.

Oh, this is all your toys.

[Skype ring]

- Are you okay?

- [Leah] Come one.

It's nice, I'm happy to be here, really, I am.

I know I was putting up a fight at first

but I really...

What was that?

This place is just so big it creeks,

it like, it's kinda creepy.

- I don't know how you do it.

- What's this, do what?

- Come on Liz, this whole, this cheer you got.

I don't, I just don't get it.

- I don't know, something is weird these days.

June's distant and strange with me.

And, and Lyle actually.

They used to have this morning ritual

where she would take her for a walk

to get coffee every morning and they did it

no matter what, no matter where.

It was their thing and then she just stopped.

And now it's just something they don't do and...

- You know you're gonna have to

stand up to June's ambition man.

- Maybe you should just come and visit.

- Right, right I can do that--

- Right.

Yeah, it's only 15 minutes on the train.

- With strangers, it's 15 minutes with strangers.

- Oh God, don't let your rap fans know.

- My rap fans really?

- Yeah!

You and June are two little weirdo...

what was that?

Lyle?

Lyle?

Honey?

Lyle?

Sweetie?

Where'd you go?

Lyle, Lyle, Lyle?

[unintelligible speech]

- Leah?

[garbled screaming]

[garbled screaming]

- [Leah] Wait, No!

[eerie piano music]

[rapid heartbeat]

- [Voiceover] The loss of a child, is the hardest thing

a human can face.

The patterns created by the grieving process alone,

can be confusing, disorienting, and surreal.

Mothers must protect their children.

[muffled screaming]

- Yeah we're just doing really, really well.

So much better.

- [June] You know, I think we turned a corner

and um, it's been seven months so...

- Okay, so how have you been feeling

about your theories about the distraction

surrounding the accident, involving your landlady Karen?

- Oh God yeah, Karen, that was...

I don't know that was just nothing, crazy.

- What about you June?

I know that you were concerned a couple

visits ago about signing someone?

- She's famous.

- [June] No, I 'm not [chuckling]

We're rich now.

- [June] It's actually been kinda hard.

I feel responsible and um...

I feel like I moved us here and...

like it's my fault or, I just feel responsible.

And um, I mean I was new with the label

and Three's and Charlie and Margot

that was chancy, so I felt--

[laughing]

- Sorry, sorry.

I was just thinking about

[laughing]

about how upset you were when we found out

we weren't having a boy, she was so obsessed!

[laughing]

With having a boy!

I'm sorry, I don't know why, I just thought of that!

[laughing loudly]

- Leah?

Leah, I know we spoke a couple weeks ago

about some medications that were available

to you that you could take even

throughout your pregnancy to help you

deal with some of the things you're going through.

- [June] Oh, we decided not to do that.

Not while she's pregnant.

- No, we really are doing really good.

So much better.

- [Therapist] Okay, that's your decision

but I want you to know that you do have options.

And I'd love for you to let me know

if you feel like you're going back to your old patterns.

- Yeah, I will, I will.

- [Therapist] Good.

[dark music]

- Guess what, I think we should order Red Dragon.

- [June] I think that sounds perfect.

- Good.

- [June] Love you heart.

- I know, and you love Red Dragon almost as much.

[laughing]

- [June] True.

God please let there be beer in the fridge, please.

Ah, yes.

Leah, Leah what are you doing?

Stop it, stop.

- Look, look.

She left us flowers, how did she get in here?

- Do not do this right now okay, do not.

We just had a really good session--

- I want to move out.

- You want to move out.

- Okay, I'll find us another place,

I know we're not supposed to make

any big changes right now but I can't be here,

it just doesn't feel right.

- [June] Yeah, I let Karen in.

She wanted to give us flowers again okay I let her--

- I know, I really really think that I could not leave

the window open, look I can barely

even get it up, okay, I'm so careful.

I don't even remember, I would've remembered!

- So you think someone broke in

is that what you think, and then they opened the window?

- I don't know okay, I don't know,

I just know that it doesn't feel right here

and it never has!

- It's not the apartment, it's not you

and it's not me, and it's not the city.

Nothing that you do can ever bring Lyle back.

She's gone.

Okay, it's not your theories, it's just

we cannot keep inventing things.

She was my kid too.

- I know, I know she was, I'm sorry okay. [weeping]

- We have to look to the future

we have to focus on the future okay?

Please Leah.

- Okay.

[weeping]

- Okay sweetheart.

You need to think about the new baby.

I can't do this alone.

[eerie music]

[creaking]

[rapid footsteps]

[dark music]

- [June] It happened. [Leah screams]

Three's totally made the charts

we're gonna be rich.

What are you doing in the dark?

[chuckling]

I thought you were gonna work on the nursery?

[whimsical music]

[rapid breathing]

[phone buzzes]

- Aileen hi.

Yeah, yeah, I'm really looking forward to it.

You're definitely coming right?

Good it will be really nice to see you.

Okay, okay great yeah.

I'll tell her.

Okay, listen, I just realized I never thanked you

for God, everything you did with the move

and finding us this incredible apartment.

What do you mean I thought,

you were the one who told June about the apartment?

I guess, no, I guess I'm misremembering.

Yeah, yeah, yeah okay, okay.

[paint roller rolling]

- [Karen] I said I do want to brew beer

not I didn't, who would say don't get me a brewed beer?

[inaudible speech]

- [Karen] Roger?

Oh shoot.

I can't go out like this it happened again.

I'm leaking, guess the baby's just...

Roger?

[high pitched eerie tone]

[repeated squealing]

[eerie music]

- [Taylor] Hey, are you okay?

I'm sorry about Lyle.

That was her name right?

- [Leah] Yeah.

- I saw you guys walking outside once,

she was laughing.

- [Leah] Yeah, she was pretty happy all the time.

Just one of those kids.

Okay, well it was nice to meet you, finally.

- I was gonna have a beer.

If you want uh, some water?

- [Leah] Okay.

- [Taylor] So what were you doing on the balcony?

- Um, apparently I'm not grieving correctly.

Inventing things so I don't have to deal with the truth.

It's weird being up here.

Where are all the other models?

- [Taylor] Well, Miranda doesn't

really live here anymore actually.

- Do you like it?

I keep seeing you in that one ad the one with the um

baby tiger, the Christmas one.

- Right.

I don't know if I like it,

It just sorta happened, you know?

Every little girl's dream.

It's not what I would pick anymore though.

- Right.

Another kid died in this building, two actually.

Turns out the internet's not

a great place for people like me.

First one's kinda boring.

Seven month old baby died in his crib

of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome.

SIDS, wonderful name.

The other one's a crazy one.

A professor and his family were living here,

he was kind of this bland mediocre guy,

miserable, couldn't get a job he wanted.

And then one day he just left.

Quit his job, left his family, his wife.

Moved to Canada for a year.

And then he comes back and he has

a job at Columbia and he's writing papers,

lecturing, getting paid, everything.

That's when the accident's start to happen.

First there's a fire in the building, this building.

It's Christmas and the family's packing up the car

to go to his parents' house.

Tree falls inside, fire starts.

There's a little boy, their nine year old son

is on the top floor.

Somehow the neighbor gets him out.

Heads him up to the roof, fine,

not a scratch on him, a couple little burns.

Three weeks later he dies anyway.

Falls down the front stairwell.

Smacks his head on the iron grate.

Still wearing the bandages from the burns.

That's what the article said.

- So that's one of your theories?

That the building is cursed?

- No that's not what I think.

- I think you can grieve any way you want.

- How well do you know Karen?

I think she lied to me, she said

there was never a kid who lived in this building.

I want to know how long she's had it,

how long she's lived here.

- What because of these other--

- Do you know?

- I guess a long time, but I don't think

I mean there's no way she could've

climbed up to your window.

- [Leah] We're uh, - You know that right?

- [Leah] having a party on Thursday.

- Wait hold on!

- You should come, June will be there

you can meet her.

It's gonna be a sort of baby shower.

[rapid breathing]

- Hey are you awake?

Hey.

Tell me about going up to the model's apartment.

You totally have a crush on her don't you?

[groaning]

I'm really proud of us.

Of you.

[smooching]

We're gonna be fine.

- Okay, I get it.

But what we don't understand is

why our contract is essentially the same as yours?

- You guys got violins it's a completely different thing!

- Oh come on, if you were a lady--

- Oh come on, alright, that's it, that's my cue.

- No, no honestly it's always that way.

It's two girls for the price of one guy.

- You what, ya'll not--

- It's historical.

- Ya'll not gettin' me in this conversation.

I'm gonna get a strawberry, ya'll enjoy your party.

- Agh, okay.

I mean am I right or what Leah?

Lee?

Lee?

- Yes

Yes.

- Two girls for the price of one guy, it's historical

I mean can you talk to her?

If the gay producer can't give any assurance.

- It makes no sense and I will not let this happen ladies.

- Okay, thanks.

- Yo, Lee you have to talk to Xavier

he's like gonna make me famous right?

- Hey.

- I hope so because we want to be

a lot richer than we are.

[chuckles]

- Well that's what I want you to think.

- You know he's actually really down to earth.

I thought all agents were assholes but I think--

- Why is she here?

- I saw her in the hallway, it would be

rude not to invite her, I thought it's not...

Well you're not gonna make a big deal

out of this right?

- No, it's fine, it's fine of course.

Just go be popular.

- [Taylor] Hey.

- You're here.

- [Taylor] I wanted to talk to you.

It's bout the other day.

- No, I'm sorry about that, I'm actually pretty embarrassed,

I know that Karen couldn't have crawled

up our wall and gotten to the window.

- There was a ladder.

The blue metal one from the laundry room.

I saw it out there that day.

It was on her balcony.

Leah?

Maybe I shouldn't have said anything

but I, I just couldn't stop thinking about you

and what we talked about--

- [Karen] One question.

Can that belly dance?

- [Leah] Get away from me, get away from me!

- [Karen] What?

- [June] Leah.

- She did it, I told you, you wouldn't listen to me!

I kept telling you that there was something wrong

and you never listen to me! - [June] Calm down.

- [June] Calm down, calm down, stop.

- There were other things to!

There was a baby and a little boy named Andrew

who was only nine years old!

Ask her, ask her!!

- Ask her what?

Stop it.

- She did it, they all died!

Right here in your building!

They all died in your building!

- [Karen] Not my building!

- In 16 years, three children have died it her building!

- No, no, no, I don't own I just moved here

two years ago, I'm just the manager.

I don't understand.

I would never...

[eerie music]

- [Doula] When you're putting your home birth kit together

I like to recommend a few extras.

I want you to make sure that you

have everything way ahead of time.

It's great to have some extra towels,

old towels on hand, and uh oh, a lamp,

in case you want to have a dark and tranquil room.

I especially like the birth anchor.

It is fantastic when you want to go into

a hands and knees position, but it also

can be a danger, you have to use it correctly.

You don't want to force anything.

I'm thinking that you want to have

some pots, uh big pots of water

on the stove in case things really cool down.

And maybe some tennis balls or lavender oil.

You just want to make sure you're

really prepared for this home birth.

What do you think?

[whimsical music]

[womb sounds]

- [Leah] Hi, we just, we want to drop this cake off

as an apology for the other night, I'm sorry.

- Oh a cake!

How wonderful, come in, come in.

I'm gonna try it right now.

- You know, we're just on our way out so--

- [Karen] It's so sweet that you made me a cake

you'll stay and have some won't you?

- Um, actually we're in a little bit of a rush.

- Oh, stay, stay, come on.

- [June] Uh, we really don't want to be a--

- Sit down, sit.

I don't want you to worry at all

about the other night, I understand.

I mean I, I understand grief.

Well the truth is, I was never able to have children.

And I've been obsessed with it for years.

Sometimes I even pretend to be pregnant.

It's a therapy thing.

Roger hates it.

But, sometimes I still try.

I know that's sad.

- Oh no, not at all.

- Oh my God!

Applesauce.

- No.

- You put applesauce in it to make it so moist.

- No applesauce.

- Are you sure?

- No applesauce.

Well really we don't want to keep you

and thank you so much for being so understanding.

And thank you--

- You know what, I've been thinking about the kids.

I mean three dead children.

Three in this building.

It's just like this Lifetime I saw.

And you know what I started to think about?

First born sons.

You know sacrificing your first son,

deals with the devil, stuff like that.

I know it's silly but--

- But they weren't all boys.

- I know, so.

What if you promise Satan a son

and you only had girls, what then?

I mean think about it.

I swear to God there's applesauce in this cake. [giggles]

- [June] We have to go.

- [Karen] Oh, come by any time.

[eerie sounds]

- [June] We met through a mutual friend,

and we were working on a project together for her I think.

And...

[sighs]

Um, we were, God it was some experimental video

we were supposed to write some lines for it

and we came up with these terrible lines I think.

But I don't even remember what we were doing

because I was just so, I was pretty enamored I think.

She was so, you were so strange. [giggles]

- [Therapist] Leah?

Any moments or any stories?

- Uh, I do have this one memory of

a day when Lyle was maybe three months old

and she [sighs] she had been crying

and crying and it was, it was her feeding time.

But I had just been feeling for days like

I would get her and bring her to the breast

and she just wouldn't eat and it almost,

I don't know, I just, I felt, I know this is

kind of a crazy thing to say 'cos she was so young

but I felt almost manipulated by her or something

it was just so frustrating to me

and so there was this one day that

it was around two and she normally would feed and I

I had tried a couple of times, and had her back to her crib

and she just was screaming, just crying and crying

and crying and I just locked myself in the bathroom.

I...

couldn't take it and I just sat there with the door closed

and the water running drowning out her screaming

for I don't know, maybe an hour, longer.

I think about that sometimes.

[sighs]

- They're not working.

- You're not good at them.

- I know, alright.

- What the hell is this?

That one's cute.

- I'll give you one guess what this is.

[laughing]

- A bat playing hide and go seek.

[laughing]

I feel so excited.

- Do you still have pains?

- Uh, no.

- Good.

I'll see ya tonight.

- Okay.

Are you gonna be late again tonight?

June?

[door closes]

[eerie music]

[banging]

[banging]

[banging]

[sighs]

[eerie music]

[knocking]

- Haven't seen you.

- Yeah, you've been, you've been gone a lot.

- Mind if I grab my beer?

- Of course not.

- [Taylor] Water?

- No thank you.

So where have you been?

- Uh, Hamburg, I think.

I don't really know at this point.

Things are good?

- Yeah really good.

We're just, we're really excited about the baby.

Really excited.

- So no new theories then?

- Nope!

At least none that I cop to.

- Well you can always tell me.

- Why because you already think I'm crazy?

- I like to know what you're thinking.

- Okay, uh well, I've been waking up

every morning with this crazy old school idea about

sacrificing your first born son for fame or something.

- Oh right, so all the other kids were first borns?

- No, I know, it doesn't hold up um.

But actually the professor and the parent

of the other baby were pretty famous afterward

or at least successful, oh are these

pictures of you an d your kid?

- [Taylor] Yup.

- [Leah] You're always hiding.

- Yeah, back then, I didn't really like the camera.

I didn't like looking at myself.

Mirrors, anything.

- Why, you must been so beautiful?

- It wasn't really like that.

What kind of kid were you?

I bet you were serious.

Leah?

- This is our building.

[eerie music]

Where did you grow up?

- Um, what?

- When you were a child, where did you live?

- We lived here and there.

- [Leah] What did you--

- Why did you come up here?

- [Leah] What did you mean when you said

that you wanted to pick something else

when you were modeling?

- What?

- You said it's not what I would pick now.

What does that mean?

- [Taylor] Yeah, I guess I wish I'd gone to school.

Why did you come up here?

- And you never had, you never had a baby?

- What, no.

- You never had a child?

- No, I had a mistake once but that,

I really am glad that you came up here Leah,

I want to--

- I love the Avenon.

- Do you want me to, no, Leah.

Leah!

- I'll kill you if you touch my baby!

- [Taylor] What?

- I'll kill you! [voice breaking]

[panicked breathing]

[eerie sounds]

- Ah there she is.

[gasping]

Surprised?

- Your phone, can I have your phone?

- Oh is it happening now?!

Oh no, oh.

- June! June!

June!

It's her, it's the model upstairs,

she's trying to get the baby! [weeping]

No I think the baby's coming, I need you to come get me.

- Oh damn, alright.

- No, no you don't understand, June!

June!

- Okay, yeah, just just, breathe okay.

Don't don't push, please don't push.

Nothin' I'll get you some water.

You want some water?

- Yeah, just please don't leave!

- No I'm not gonna leave, I'm gonna get you some water okay.

[eerie music]

- You need to get me out of here!

- What do you, what's wrong?

- It's June, she's a part of it.

They have some sort of pact!

The model upstairs, something evil,

they want my baby. [weeping]

- Model?

Taylor cannot get to you from here okay.

You're fine, you're safe, relax.

- How do you know her name?

- Whoopsie!

I guess I'm in on it too.

You know what, just sit there, relax for a second okay.

I told them I don't want to be here for this.

Do you want the water or not?

The water, do you want the water?

- I need it.

[weeping]

[breathing rapidly]

- Just sit there relax, okay.

Pretty soon, this will all be over with.

That's what they tell me.

And you can go back to cooking

or whatever it is that you do.

[breathing rapidly]

[dog barking]

[weeping]

- Can you help me?

[unintelligible pleading]

- Leah are you okay?

- Help, can you help me?!

- Is it happening?

Oh my God, let's get you home.

- No I can't go back, I need a hospital!

- Did your water break?

[eerie music]

- Two for one.

Two for one.

That's why she wanted a son.

Two girls for one boy.

That's why she wanted...

[unintelligible panicked speech]

- Should I call 911?

- Leah!

[sighs]

I gotcha, I'm here, I'm here.

[eerie music]

[water dripping]

[sighing]

[distant voices]

- This doesn't feel right.

I think we should bring her to the hospital

she said she didn't want to be here.

She specifically said that.

[muffled, distorted speech]

- No I'm not comfortable leaving her.

[screaming]

[overlapping speech]

- One second longer!

- You've always wanted to have a baby of your own right?

[screaming]

- No, no, please!

[screaming]

- Breathe, breathe, remember what Diana said?

[unintelligible coaching]

Breathe breathe, that's it.

Breathe, just like Diana said okay.

- Please, please, you don't have to do this.

- Just calm down, okay, calm down.

- You don't have to do this okay.

She's our child.

- This is for us okay?

- No please!

- Trust me.

- No please, please.

- I promise, this is best for us, okay, I promise.

- Please.

- It's too late.

We can have more.

I promise, trust me.

[grunting] It's okay.

- Okay, okay but, can we just,

can we be alone?

Please, can it just be me and you?

- I'm not supposed to leave.

- Please can it just be me and you?

- No it's okay.

- Alright, well I mean.

But make sure you text me, right after it's finished okay.

- Will you come in here with me please?

Will you come in here with me?

- You want me to? - Yeah.

- Really?

- Yeah.

- Okay.

[breathing heavily, moaning]

- That's good, breathe breathe.

That's good, that's good, breathe, visualize.

That's good, that's it, breathe.

Look at me, look at me.

Okay.

[moaning]

Good, you're doing good, you're doing good okay?

- Hands and knees, hands and knees.

- That's good, oh you're doing so good okay.

Keep going, keep going.

- My thighs, I need my... [faltering]

- Okay, okay.

I got you, I got you.

You're doing so good, you're doing so good.

Breathe, breathe, breathe.

[screams]

[gasping, splashing]

[deep gasping]

[loud groaning]

[baby crying]
