Dad.
Based on a true story
It all began on June 16, 1675
in a small village called Paray-Le-Monial, in France
There lived a humble nun, Margaret, Saint Margaret Mary Alacoque
It was to her that Jesus himself appeared.
Not just once, but on multiple occasions.
And in one of those visions...
the Lord spoke words that would shake the world's soul.
Behold the heart that has so loved mankind.
And that has spared nothing...
even to exhausting and consuming itself to testify its love to them.
With a soft voice but full of divine authority, He made a request.
I ask that on the first Friday after the octave of Corpus Christi...
a special feast be celebrated in honor of my Sacred Heart...
and I promise you this.
My heart shall expand to pour out in abundance...
the graces of its divine love upon all those who honor it.
Thus was born one of Christianity's deepest and most powerful devotions.
A few years would pass.
The echoes of that sacred revelation crossed the vast ocean...
traveling from the silent cloisters of France...
to Spain, and then to the New World.
And it was here, in a hidden corner of old Nueva Galicia...
where the flame of that devotion found a new home.
A small town, humble in size but immense in faith.
In this place, a wonderful story begins.
Today, we invite you to discover it.
Because what happened here was not the work of chance...
but part of a divine plan.
The story you are about to see is more than a tale...
it is a living testimony of faith, miracles, and hope.
Come on guys, look sharp now...
we've arrived in a new world.
Where's Ojitos?
Come on then! Get 'em out! Let's go!
My wife is waiting.
Good afternoon.
Good afternoon, sir.
Excuse me, I'm looking for a...
Are you lost?
No, no, I'm looking for a tavern.
Don Simon's tavern?
I don't know, just a tavern.
Well, Don Simon's place is right on the corner.
Ah, thank you.
But it's closed today. You'd have to come back tomorrow.
Ah, well, thanks for the info.
Good afternoon.
Good day.
And this is your estate, the Saint Nicholas Hacienda.
I'll leave you to admire it.
I think we should change the name.
And what's with you now?
Why? It's a nice name.
Saint Gertrudis, because of the great devotion I have for the Saint.
And for the Sacred Heart of Jesus.
I believe that name will bring us blessings and prosperity.
Alright!
From now on, Saint Nicholas Hacienda...
shall be called...
Saint Gertrudis Hacienda.
To make you happy.
Javier!
Javier!
Wake up!
Hey man!
He didn't wake up!
What do you have for me?
Well, I've been reviewing Don Sebastian's lawsuit...
and his entire argument is based on an old map he has.
I think it's a fake.
But he claims that those lands...
he has worked them his entire life.
I don't know.
What can you tell me about that?
What do you mean? It's a lie.
Look...
We cannot lose this case.
If we lose, many people won't have food to eat.
Many people depend on me.
And to top it off, we have the issue with the streams.
It's been a long time since we've had a good harvest.
And now this.
Everything is going to get worse.
I don't know what to do.
Mariano.
May I offer some advice?
Please.
Look.
In these towns.
More than papers,
what really counts,
is what the people know.
Talk to the oldest neighbors...
the ones who were there.
They can give testimonies...
so powerful...
that it won't matter what little maps Don Sebastian presents.
Keep your head up.
We don't want to see you like this.
Chin up.
I don't know, I don't know.
I'm going to ask a very important favor of you both...
With great caution.
I want most people to find out what is happening.
But don't let Don Sebastian's people hear of it.
Understood?
In small towns, everyone knows everything...
Doesn't matter.
We're backing you, right Counselor?
Of course, and with what the gentleman is saying...
we have the law on our side.
You'll see, this case is going to move forward.
Have faith.
We're with you, we support you. Come on, cheer up!
Alright then.
It's good to know I have friends.
Let's do it then.
Let's do it, let's do it.
Waiter, another.
And a round for everyone here.
Come on, cheer up!
Alright!
Well look, these lands are very good for planting.
Keep a sharp eye, Caporal, this way.
Even the withered plants must be respected, because one day they'll feed us.
Of course.
And you'll see that next year, you'll have a very good harvest.
Truly, It's very good soil.
And what part is ours?
From here, as far as the eye can see.
All of that is yours.
Oh, really?
Yes.
So we stand on our tiptoes.
Then we cover more, right?
Sure.
It's all yours.
Well, get started, Caporal.
We need to clear from here to there.
Perfect.
And you, spread out a little further... because.
Out of sight, out of mind.
That way we take a bit more.
You got it.
Let's go then.
I just don't know what to do, Dolores.
What Antonio is doing isn't right.
Look, ma'am, in my opinion.
Your husband is a good man.
He doesn't hit you, he spoils you and supports you.
Many women cannot say the same.
What Don Antonio does have is that he's an alcoholic.
That, that is what I want him to change.
If you want him to change, support him, help him. Let him know it's not okay.
Tell him the consequences of drinking. He might listen to you.
This tastes like donkey piss.
You and me.
To the good stuff!
Deal?
Come on!
Are you ready?
Fine, loser pays.
One, two, you lost! Pay up, pay up, pay up...
Don't be cheap. Come on, pay up. Help yourself to some food.
Can't even handle the first round.
What are you looking at, loser?
What?
What, what are you looking at... loser?
At how disgusting you look.
Oh, really? Are you asking for trouble now.
Wait.
Bring it on! I'm ready. Come on, let's go.
What?
Come on then!
Come on punch me!
Come on punch me!
Go, go!
Let him go!
I'm going to finish you!
I'm going to finish you!
You're going to pay for this!
That's enough, gentlemen!
Enough, please, gentlemen, stop!
Hey, enough, please show some respect, gentlemen!
Enough, enough, gentlemen, gentlemen!
Stop, calm down, please!
What?
What, what?
Let's go, let's go.
Let's leave! To where?
Let's go!
To where? I can handle myself!
Enough now, hey!
Enough, hey!
Get in!
Now it turns out I need a nanny. Fine, I'm going alone then.
Wait.
Where are you going?
I'm walking and peeing.
Get in!
Opa!
Let me help you up!
What's the rush? Are you afraid of that pig?
It's not fear, but please, get in. Get in! Well, what...
There he goes, there he goes.
Hey, hey, I don't fit!
Yes, you do...
Ah, give me that!
Are you okay?
I said, are you okay?
Where is the pulque!
Hey, horsie! Let's go!
How is it possible I'm getting involved in this stuff.
Let's just go.
Now it turns out I have friends, fine.
Come on!
Let's go!
Move it!
Stop then!
We can't, they're following us.
I have to pee!
Hold it.
Why all the fuss?
Are you really afraid of that pig?
It's not fear!
Just for safety!
Throw him a corn cob to keep him busy!
If not we hit it first.
Come on!
Quiet now, man, and don't get up.
Hey! Which way is your house?
There!
Ah!
What did you say?
Which way is your house?
There in the cornfield!
Turn right!
There are four fields! Which one?
The one with all the thorns!
Right there!
There where you see a well!
Turn right again right there!
Eh!
Got it!
Question?
You're my friend, right?
Yes, I'm your friend.
Are we almost there?
Hold on, wait for the sun to go down.
It's still way up there...
And it's hitting me real bad.
Start singing, man!
It's sobering me up!
and I don't like that one bit.
Is the sun gone yet?
No!
Oh wait! I covered my face.
Hey!
Is that it?
You're my friend, right?
Yes, I'm your friend.
I have a friend who loves me.
Loves me.
Loves me.
I have a friend who loves me.
What's your name, friend?
Mariano!
His name is Mariano.
Sing!
How he loves me.
Loves me.
Loves me.
I have a friend who loves me.
Mariano is his name.
Let's go inside.
Ojitos!
Don't fall!
Come quietly, you're drunk!
Be quiet, please!
Easy now, okay? Watch your step.
Ojitos!
I'm home, honey.
Ojitos!
Tony! Drunk again?
It's just too much.
I'm fine Maria.
No, I'm just tired of this.
Don't talk like that, I'll fall in love.
Very kind of you to bring him.
You are...
Don Mariano.
Don Mariano, thank you very much.
What happened? Can you explain?
Your husband had an issue.
I did?
You did, it was you.
No, I had nothing to do with it.
You spend all your time drinking.
Enough, I'm tired.
Tell me, what brings you here?
I have a problem with some lands.
And can we help you with something?
No, no, everything is fine.
Yes... serve us something to drink.
No, no, no, no.
Don't listen to him, he's drunk.
And what?
Sorry, are you...
believers in the...
Sacred Heart?
Yes, very much so.
I've carried...
a very strong devotion in my heart since I was a child.
When my father fell ill in Spain...
My mother carried sculpture of the Sacred Heart
to pray to.
So it would give us strength and comfort.
You see, the doctor told us
he wouldn't last even a week.
And the Sacred Heart of Jesus
blessed us with the miracle
of having my father for three more months.
Interesting story.
Well, I won't trouble you any longer.
Excuse me.
Thank you.
You're welcome.
Wait, wait, wait.
Wait right there.
Look, I know I'm a little drunk.
But I appreciate you bringing me home.
I'm always alone, but...
I imagine what you did for me is the closest thing...
To having a friend.
Ana Maria!
Hand me the bag that's over there next to the doll.
Hurry up dear.
Hold on a moment.
Here.
No, no, that's not necessary.
Hush.
Please.
It's not much, but...
It's a blessing.
Here take it!
As a thank you.
I truly appreciate...
what you're doing for me.
Excuse me.
Thanks to the Sacred Heart,
we are nothing more than an extension of Him, right?
We're just the extension, right.
Help.
Help.
What happened friend? What's wrong?
My baby is dying.
What do you need?
Medicine... money.
I'm going to help you, take it easy.
Look.
I hope this can help you.
Really?
Please.
Thank you so much.
I hope it helps.
I will never forget this.
Don't worry my friend, please go on.
Good afternoon boss.
Yeah, what do you want?
Look, I recommend moving this cattle.
Don't shout at me, I've got a headache.
Speak slowly and clearly.
I recommend moving this cattle to the other paddock.
You're recommending me?
To me, from a simple foreman?
Yes, well look, I think you made a mistake here.
The cattle belonged somewhere else.
Look, so now it turns out that I was wrong.
Me?
Whose ranch is this?
Yours boss.
Whose estate is this?
Yours boss.
You're finally using your head.
You're an idiot.
Why, for goodness sake?
Uh, no, sir.
You're a fool!
Did you fall when you were little?
Did your mother drop you or what?
No, sir.
Now it turns out the ducks are shooting at the guns.
Control your horse, you don't even know how to do that.
Go away!
Where are you going?
Who said you could leave?
Look at me.
Don't look me in the eyes, or I'll hit you.
Never.
Don't you ever forget.
Who is above whom?
You hear me?
Yes Sir.
That's it.
Go see if the sow has farrowed yet.
Move it then!
Good grief, horse and all!
Control him! You can't even do that!
Damn it!
This field is completely dry.
When are you going to stop choking me?
Huh?
According to him...
Good heavens.
Ma'am,
I'm embarrassed to ask this,
but,
do you think I'll be paid for last week
and this week?
Oh, Dolores.
I'm so sorry,
but I don't have any money right now.
Antonio hasn't given me any,
he spends it all on alcohol,
and he's not working.
This has never happened before.
I'm desperate.
Don't you worry, ma'am. As soon as you can pay me, I know you will.
As for your husband, the Sacred Heart will help him and it'll open his eyes.
I hope you're right.
I've been praying to the Sacred Heart to help him.
Here it is.
Hey, hey.
What's going on? Where are you going?
Sorry, good afternoon. I'm here to see Don Sebastian.
For what?
Regarding a land matter.
Land? What kind of land?
Personal matter.
And?
Well? Can I go in?
No.
I don't make my self clear...
Don Sebastian told me...
No, you're making yourself very clear.
But Don Sebastian isn't expecting anyone...
...get lost.
What the hell!
Hey! You!
Don Sebastian!
Why did you let him in?
He just barged in.
I'll deal with you in a moment.
Who are you?
You know exactly who I am.
Mariano?
Yes.
You are very daring.
Coming into my house like this.
And shouting at me.
What do you want?
I'm here to talk about my land.
You have land?
You know perfectly well which land I'm talking about.
That land belongs to me.
And that's the end of the story.
That's theft.
That land belonged to my family
and you know that perfectly well.
You can call it whatever you want.
But it is what it is.
Whether you like it, or not
If not, go cry to a judge.
Well, if you want to do this the hard way...
Then the hard way it is.
Look.
Here!
after God,
I am the king.
Well, don't forget that many kingdoms...
have also been toppled.
And you won't be the exception.
I'll see you in court
Don Sebastian.
Don't touch me.
Before the sun goes down,
I want you to take care of him.
And careful to not leave any trace...
It's the only way I'll forgive you...
...for the stupidity of letting him into my house.
Do you understand?
Yes.
Get out of here.
Oh, buddy.
Now we've lost the land.
Let's see what we can do.
Those sons of ...
My friend.
Let's get to it.
Oh, my little friend.
Did we make it, buddy?
Did we make it out?
Marianito!
Marianito!
Get down!
Get down!
Oh, Mariano, Mariano!
Oh well...
Time to meet God.
What do you say?
Any last wishes?
No wishes then.
On the count of three, I'll cut your throat.
One...
Two...
What are you doing?
Don Sebastian told me to kill him.
Step back!
But it's just that...
Step back!
So you're the boss now?
Yes?
Alright.
Look, buddy.
You've only got two choices here.
One...
Either you get out of town and don't come back...
Or you die right here.
Take your pick.
Fair enough.
But as for me, I don't owe you anything anymore.
I will never forget this.
Please, go, go.
Let's go!
One more buddy.
One more.
Ojitos?
Don't make me beg on my knees.
Wasting time again, Ojitos.
What are you doing here?
Lying here all day.
Bruising your knees...
talking nonsense.
Antonio, I seek comfort and strength in my faith.
I pray for you, so you can find peace...
and change your heart for us.
Find peace?
You think I'm going to find peace here?
Please, what are you talking about?
Enough with the "sacred" and all that things.
Antonio, you have to admit that you're not well.
You drink more than when we were in Spain.
So what?
The other day, you were almost beaten...
but Mariano got you out of that tavern in time.
You're not okay.
I pray for you.
Because I have hope that the Sacred Heart of Jesus...
will help you realize you have to do this for yourself and for me.
I won't lose hope.
That you'll find a way.
I don't like seeing you this way.
You get aggresive when you drink.
When have I done anything?
Yes!
Not me, but to others yes!
No!
That is not right.
If I do, it's because they deserve it.
I'm a man, I have to defend myself.
It's no use wasting time here.
A person has to take matters into their own hands.
Stop it.
Part of this is my fault.
How could it be your fault?
What do you mean, your fault?
First it's my fault, then yours? Whose is it?
Who understands you?
You're just making my head spin.
And you say I'm the drunk one.
Antonio, we all carry guilt.
We all have our burdens to bear.
And I choose to believe in mercy and redemption.
I ask the Sacred Heart of Jesus...
to grant you a new and strong heart...
and fill you with peace and love.
Fill me with peace.
You think out of nowhere there will be a miracle and fill me with peace?
Yes.
With everything that has happened
Eh!
Think about it.
Think about it.
With everything I've been through.
You really think so?
Think.
If God ever grants us the joy...
of being able to have children...
think of the example you'll set for them.
Eh?
Ojitos.
why don't you hate me?
Huh?
If I hurt you so much
why the hell don't you hate me?
Because I love you.
I have always loved you Antonio.
And I know you can be better we can all be better...
and I believe in the power of forgiveness.
I'm not losing hope.
I really won't lose my hope...
that you will find the true path.
Yes! It will take time...
one step at a time.
And I want to be with you, supporting you.
Sacred Heart of Jesus,
hear my pleas...
and grant my husband...
the grace of your love...
your peace.
Give him a strong heart...
and help him find the true path.
Amen.
I can't believe it.
Let me in.
The door! The door!
What happened? I thought you were dead.
I almost was.
Don Sebastian sent men to kill me,
I barely made it out alive.
But anyway, I'll tell you later.
I need you to do me a favor.
Alright.
I need you to make me a Sacred Heart of Jesus.
A Sacred Heart of Jesus?
You know it's been a long time
since I've done any sculpting.
I know, but this is for a friend.
Give me a hand here.
Fine, you can count on me.
To be honest, I need it as soon as possible.
I'm going to take cover at my house.
Don't you worry.
Until then, we won't see each other again.
I wish you the best of luck.
Take good care of yourself.
I love you son.
Give me your blessing.
With pleasure.
May God bless you on your journey.
Thank you very much, my friend.
Until then.
See you soon.
Friend...
when you give me this Sacred Heart,
I'm going to take it to Mexticacán to be blessed.
I know that with this,
I'll be able to save a family.
Sir! Sir! Sir! Are you okay?
Sir!
Please, wake up, sir.
Help!
Sir!
Sir please wake up.
No.
Please.
Please.
Wake up.
No.
Ma'am.
Ma'am.
Don Antonio.
Ma'am.
What? What? What happened to him?
He's lying out there on the ground.
He's not responding.
No! Take us there.
Let's go.
Dolores, let's go.
Sacred Heart of Jesus.
Come.
Heal him.
Give him a strong heart.
Please.
I beg you.
Sweet Sacred Heart...
hear me.
God will grant him the miracle.
Ma'am, don't lose faith.
The Lord is with thee...
blessed art thou among women...
and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus...
It's going to be fine ma'am.
The Sacred Heart will perform the miracle.
Who's there?
Who's there?
Mariano...
Mariano...
Mariano...
Mariano...
Mariano...
Mariano...
Mariano...
Sacred Heart of Jesus, I trust in you.
Sacred Heart of Jesus, I trust in you.
Sacred Heart of Jesus, I trust in you.
Sacred Heart of Jesus, I trust in you.
Mariano...
Sacred Heart of Jesus, I trust in you.
Sacred Heart of Jesus, I trust in you.
Mariano...
Mariano...
Oh, Dolores...
We came from Spain hoping for a change of life...
and that change never came.
Ma'am...
For the first time in my life...
I don't know what to say...
or how to help you.
Don't worry.
I don't know what to say either.
Everything will be alright.
Oh my God.
No.
My God.
Please help me.
My God.
I need to get to Mexticacán...
My God.
Help me find Mexticacán.
Mexticacán.
Mexticacán.
Let me find Mexticacán.
Sacred Heart of Jesus, please.
Lead me on the path to Mexticacán.
Guide me Sacred Heart...
Sacred Heart of Jesus...
Sacred Heart of Jesus...
Who are you?
Have some water.
Do you live here?
Where are you headed?
I was traveling with my horse who was my friend, but he abandoned me.
Do you know where Mexticacán is?
No.
I believe Mexticacán is...
just beyond that hill.
You think?
Don't look with your eyes.
Look with your heart.
Like the one you carry there.
Well, my heart tells me the path is that way.
Right?
Our Father, who art in Heaven,
hallowed be Thy name.
Thy Kingdom come, Thy will be done...
on Earth as it is in Heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those...
who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.
Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee,
blessed art thou among women...
and blessed is the fruit of thy womb,
Jesus.
Good afternoon, Father.
Holy Mary, Mother of God.
Good afternoon, young man. What brings you here?
My name is Mariano de Ávila.
Nice to meet you, Mariano. How may I help you?
I've come from very far away, and I bring a small gift...
for a dear friend who is suffering.
I was hoping you could bless it.
Well now, what a beauty.
Who made it for you?
A good friend. An artist.
Where from? Tell me, where was it made?
Tlatenengo.
Very well.
You know, this is the first image I've seen
of the Sacred Heart of Jesus...
in New Spain.
Devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus is still very recent,
and it began in France.
A nun named Margaret saw Christ Himself
in a private revelation,
where He showed her a heart on fire,
just like this one.
And now, you bring it here.
The first of its kind in New Spain.
Father, I hope you can bless it.
With great pleasure, I'll bless it for you, Mariano.
Thank you, Father.
It's a beautiful sculpture.
But my goodness, you're very, very dirty.
What happened to you? Where are you coming from?
It's a long story.
Well then, if you'd like,
I can offer you some bread and a moment to rest.
What do you think?
I'll gladly accept.
Come on in please.
Thank you.
Thank you.
What happened to you...
that you arrived so alarmed?
Your eyes looked like...
like someone deeply frightened.
What happened?
Look, as strange as this may sound...
two very unusual things happened to me.
One of them felt like a dark force
trying to stop me from reaching this mission:
to see you
and have this Sacred Heart blessed.
And you know, more than my blessing,
what matters is what this image will give
and it will transcend
We often forget...
that there are dark forces, forces of the devil.
Satan.
Satan acts when something good is underway.
When I saw the image you showed me,
I was surprised, but also deeply moved.
Because I know that from this image,
something very great will come.
And don't worry about what happened.
It was the devil, but he can only delay us, place obstacles in our way.
It's up to us whether we fall or keep going.
Be at peace.
I'll bless it now, shall we?
Yes, Father.
This gift will bring great joy,
especially now that it is blessed.
Let's go then.
I'll follow you, Father.
But eat your bread.
I'll eat it on the way.
Let's go.
In the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.
Amen.
Almighty God the Father, creator of Heaven and Earth,
we ask you Lord, to bless this image
of our Lord Jesus Christ,
under the devotion of the Sacred Heart,
so that this image may inspire people
to draw closer to you,
convert their hearts and make them better neighbors
and better brothers and sisters.
Bless, Lord, this image,
so that in venerating it,
we may all be converted to your love.
In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit,
Amen.
May this water remind me of the day of my baptism?
Put some water on your forehead, don't be shy.
It'll help calm your nerves.
Now take better care of it, because it's blessed now.
Father, thank you for everything.
I'll walk you out, let's head that way.
It's a pleasure to see you again.
Thank you for what you did for me.
My friend, those coins you gave me
stayed with me throughout my long journey.
And that's why I brought you this small gift.
Oh, I can't express my gratitude...
it's beautiful.
If only my parents could see it.
Thank you so very much.
Thank you.
And my friend, I hope the Sacred Heart...
brings you peace.
Well, the time has come to depart.
With your permission.
Of course.
Hey! You know the tasting of these dishes...
was exquisite, delicious, really good.
Gentlemen, may I have a moment alone with the gentleman?
Hey!
Don't wander off.
Sit down.
Alright then.
Just like that.
That afternoon, that wasn't really me.
Well...
It was me, but not my best version, right?
I was fighting my demons and...
I took it out on you.
I insulted you.
I provoked something I shouldn't have.
It was wrong.
So...
Man to man...
I've come to apologize.
Apology accepted.
Thank you.
I'll buy you a drink.
To keep this better version of myself...
I quit drinking, but...
I feel really good.
Still, if you allow me,
I'll keep you company.
Very well.
Say no more, let's do it.
We smile.
A drink.
Make it a double.
A glass of water for me.
Jury and court.
We have decided.
To grant time.
To Don Mariano de Ávila.
To appear before the court.
Given that Don Mariano de Ávila...
did not appear,
the lands are hereby declared...
the property of Don Sebastián Ochoa.
One moment.
I present myself, your Honor.
I am Mariano de Ávila.
I present my defense counsel and my witness.
Your Honor, I have in my possession documents...
proving that the lands in dispute...
have belonged to the Ávila family
for generations.
Thus demonstrating that the map presented
by Don Sebastián is completely fraudulent.
Your Honor, I would also like to present my witness to the court and the audience.
You may proceed.
Your Honor, I testify that these lands belong to the Ávila family.
I have worked these lands for over 40 years.
I have seen them grow and flourish.
The map presented by Don Sebastián, I have never seen it
in all these years in this town.
I assure you.
After reviewing the evidence presented, both documents and testimonies,
this court rules in favor of Mariano de Ávila.
The lands in dispute are his lawful property,
and Don Sebastián Ochoa has no right to them.
The case is closed.
Thank you very much, your Honor.
Justice has been served, Mr. de Ávila.
May the lands continue to prosper under your care.
After a lifetime shared, in the year 1794, Mrs. Ana María Lomelí
departed this world, leaving behind
not only the memory of a righteous and pious life,
but also a legacy of love and deep faith in the Sacred Heart.
Don José Antonio Cordero, her widower,
then addressed a letter to the most illustrious bishop,
Juan Cruz Ruiz de Cabañas, informing him of the death
of his lawful wife and in a generous spirit,
donated a caballería of land at the site
of Saint Nicholas and all his possessions, all destined
for the worship of the Sacred Heart of Jesus.
In 1805, Don José Antonio also departed this world,
but what he had sown would not die with him.
The small chapel began to receive
so many pilgrims that the space was no longer enough.
It became necessary to expand it...
until it became a majestic temple that occupied the entire estate house.
Bishop Ruiz de Cabañas, declared
the sanctuary exempt from all parish jurisdiction.
After the Council of Antequera,
it was determined that the image of the Sacred Heart
should be presented as a sculpture of Christ,
and not only in a monstrance...
Thus, in the year 1913...
a sculpture of Jesus over one meter tall was commissioned...
Within it would be placed
the sacred relic of the Heart of Jesus,
open to public veneration and something astonishing happened, never before seen.
Without campaigns, without preachers, without any propaganda.
The devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus
walked on its own. From a humble home,
without adornments or ornaments,
faith spread like fire across dry land.
No one knew how, but men, women, children, elders, entire families,
left everything behind, their homes,
their lands, their worries, everything, just to come and venerate
the Sacred Heart.
Mexticacán, a corner blessed by God,
rises proudly as a symbol of faith.
Today this small town in Jalisco
is home to the monumental heart, the largest mosaic in Mexico,
made up of more than seven million tesseras.
This majestic work is a tribute to the Sacred Heart of Jesus...
who from above watches over and protects His people...
with unwavering love.
But Mexticacán
is not only a land of devotion...
it is also the national birthplace of popsicles and ice cream.
The story began in the last century...
in the 1940s, when the sons of this town
acquired German-made machines to produce popcicles.
What seemed like
a simple local venture
quickly transformed
into a thriving tradition.
The business flourished, and over time, hundreds of townspeople
carried this sweet legacy to every corner of Mexico.
Today... the popcicle migration
returns to its roots every first Sunday of September,
to venerate the feast of the Sacred Heart of Jesus.
The streets of the town transform into a spectacle of color and devotion.
Handcrafted carpets made from flower petals,
dyed sawdust, and love.
Traditional dances and deep love for Christ.
Mexticacán is more than a town, it is a...
heart that beats with history, flavor, and devotion.
