Tonight, we don our leather gloves
and grab the closest blunt object to hand as we celebrate
Coronation Street's villains.

Yes, there is definitely something in the water in Weatherfield,
as Coronation Street continues to be cursed
with villains and dastardly deeds.
You're ruined, Mike.

Corrie has certainly had some memorable baddies.
But who is the baddest of the lot?
There's been some pretty terrifying folk
living on that famous old street,
and here's a look at some of the worst.

But for one of the most memorable, we have to go back to 1986.
And in the year that gave us the hand of God,
the M25 and Top Gun, it was also responsible
for introducing us to a genuine Corrie bad guy...
Mr Alan Bradley.
You always did have a talent for needling me, didn't you?
Might just get you into trouble again, you know.
Alan arrived on the street and made an instant impression on Rita.
Oh, speak of the devil. Hello.
Hello. I can't stay long. I've parked in a bus stop.
How do you feel about dining out in style tonight?
And I won't take no for an answer.
Two nights on the trot? Don't know whether I can keep up the pace,
but being as I've only got beef burgers or fish fingers for us tea,
go on, you've talked me into it. Good. I've already booked the table.
But things began to take a turn when he stole the deeds to Rita's house.
Which, as everybody knows,
are always kept in an old biscuit tin on the sideboard.

He also impersonated her dead husband
to get his hands on some cash, and when Rita found out,
Alan's dark side was finally uncovered.
You've lied and plotted and manipulated...

You've lied, and you've cheated,
but you'll not walk away from this with a smile on your face.

Rita knew what she had to do.
She needed to hide and not draw attention to herself,
so she got herself a discreet, low-key job...
as a lounge singer in Blackpool.
RITA SINGING

♪ And if I thought our love Was ending
♪ I'd find myself drowning In my own tears. ♪
But wily old Alan was soon racing up the M55
to corner Rita at the Strand Hotel.
Cue one of the most famous scenes in Corrie history.
Get in the car. BRAKES SCREECH
TRAM HORN BLARES
RITA SOBS Rita!
Rita, it's OK, it's all right. It's all right, Rita.
It's over. It's over, Rita.
Thankfully, Rita and her wonderful plastic mac survived the ordeal.
The episode went down as a Corrie classic.
The hotel was even bestowed
with its own blue plaque to commemorate the event.
And Peter Kay paid a sneaky tribute to the scene in Phoenix Nights.
People never looked at Blackpool, trams or men named Alan
in the same way again.
As far as nicknames go,
"Norman Bates with a briefcase" is a pretty good one.
And it does a fantastic job of describing our next Corrie villain.
It is, of course, the slayer of ex-wives and business partners,
the man who left blood on the floor at Number Four, Mr Richard Hillman.
Now, if we were to try and cover all of Richard's transgressions,
we would have to apply for an extended running time,
so let's concentrate on his more severe crimes.
Richard's victims included one ex-business partner.
Get lost, Duggie. You had your chance, and you blew it.
Oh, come on, Richard! Please, we can't leave...
Duggie! No-o-o!
In fairness, he wasn't responsible for Duggie Ferguson's death,
but he didn't exactly rush to help him either.
Go on, Richard, just one more nine.
Oh, forget it!
That proved to be a turning point for Richard,
as he then graduated to the real thing
when he did this to ex-wife Patricia.
It's all gonna end for you, Richard! SHE SPITS
Just try stopping me!
SHE SCREAMS
After setting fire to his mother-in-law's house,
Richard's rampage continued at Number Four Coronation Street
when he attempted to murder Emily but was disturbed by Maxine,
giving us one of the most chilling lines ever spoken in soap world.

Richard... What the hell are you doing?
You should've stayed at the party, Maxine.

The episode in which he confessed his crimes to wife Gail
was an instant classic
and was watched by more than 19 million people.
It's true.

I didn't want to burden you with something like this.
No, don't! It was an accident, let me explain! No!
No, get off me! She was a young mother, her whole life ahead of her.
It was an accident! How could it be an accident?!
She was hit over the head with a crowbar!
She wasn't supposed to be there.

The whole saga came to a head
when Richard kidnapped Gail and her children.
What came next was pure dynamite telly.

The episode caused a surge - quite literally -
as the national grid reported
a 1,200-megawatt power surge during the ad break...
...which is the equivalent of 450,000 kettles being clicked on!
Sometimes, only a brew'll do.

that is Corrie's biggest villains
and pull out some more bona fide baddies!
Welcome back to Coronation Street's Villains.
In part one, we saw how bad the boys can be on the cobbles,
but what about the girls?
In my experience, when it comes to Corrie,
the girls can certainly give as good as they get!

But there's one girl who is head and shoulders above the rest

But this wasn't the first time Number Six Coronation Street
has had to have the carpets industrially cleaned.
There have been no fewer than four other tragedies in this
and the previous house on this site.
From Valerie Barlow's electrocution in 1971...
right through to Geoff Metcalfe's recent hospitalisation
at the wrong end of a bottle of rioja.

Speaking of statues, if there was one erected
for the baddest of all the Coronation Street baddies,
then it would certainly be for this chap -
Mr Pat Phelan.
Don't you dare push it more than you already have.
You are so gonna regret crossing me, you and little Mikey Rodwell.
We've saved the worst till last,
as Pat Phelan has a rap sheet longer than Steve McDonald's wedding list.
We first met Pat as he terrorised the Windass family,
but as the years went on, his deeds slowly grew more dastardly.
What is this? You've wasted enough of my time.
Think yourself lucky you don't have to sit through any trailers.
We can go straight to the main feature.
No audio, mind,
but I think it's clear I'm trying to walk away...
then bang!
So, I think, under the circumstances,
we should sit down and talk turkey, don't you?
He started off relatively tame by his standards,
using blackmail to get Anna Windass into bed.
So is this just another one of your games?
Fact is... it's a simple business transaction.
ANNA SCOFFS
Yeah, I thought so, and what do you get out of it?
You.
Couple of hours, they go free...
How easy was that?
Taking it up a notch, he left Michael Rodwell to die
after he'd figured out Pat's property scam
and threatened to unveil it.
You...
No, please.
Please, not now.
He then turned his attention to Andy Carver,
after he tried to expose Pat's role in Michael's death.
GRUNTING
What have you got here?
Oh... Nice try!
Just like Mikey. You know, I could see the whites of his eyes.
They were pleading with me.
I've never seen anyone look so scared.
Pat held Andy captive for almost a year,
then kidnapped ex-associate Vinny before he could go to the police,
doing away with them both.
Do it, Andy. End him.
I can't.
Do it, Andy! Save yourself! Pull the trigger! No!
Do it! Kill him!
GUNSHOT
No...
I know you.
See? You can't do it, can you?
Because underneath it all, you are a good man, Pat.
And you're no murderer. You don't know me.
GUNSHOT
So, with those two out of the way, you'd think Pat would just sit back
and enjoy some well-earned time off, but you'd be wrong.
Because after Luke Britton confronted him
about Andy's disappearance, this happened...
HE GROANS
ENGINE STUTTERS
And as the bodies of Pat's victims were discovered,
he faced a dramatic showdown with wife Eileen.
FROM PHONE: 'Eileen, did you get the message?'
Who are you talking to? Nobody.
SHE YELPS
'Listen, if you can hear me, try and tell us where you are, OK?
'Because Pat is dangerous. They think he's killed two people.'
Argh!
You've destroyed my life, you've destroyed Todd's life...
...you're a murderer, a rapist... I'm no rapist!
Oh, you think I'm going to believe you over Anna,
after everything you've done to her?!
You've made me your accomplice... The keys...
...to all your disgusting, sick... ...give me them!

Hang on, though, plot twist...
Pat wasn't dead!
He was holed up in a B&B, plotting his revenge.
Now, two things Corrie seems to always have in abundance
are sieges and weddings, so why not... Boo.
...combine the two?
GRUNTING Get off!
PAT YELLS
GUNSHOT
What have you done?! Nicola?
BABY CRIES Call an ambulance!
Get away from her.
DOOR SLAMS OPEN Help me!
Help me, she's dying! Help me!
OK, we need to get her to hospital right now.
You... You're gonna save her.
Pat, she's your daughter.
That's why he's gonna save her.
Or I will shoot her first!

SIRENS WAIL Robert...

MICHELLE SOBS Michelle, no!

I win.
So, as Pat's reign of terror came to an end,
it left the door open
for the next generation of Weatherfield wrongdoers.
You disease-ridden old tart.
Every good story needs a hero and a villain,
and Coronation Street's next crop of scoundrels
are just around the corner.
