[soft music]
- [Gcina] We are on the journey to create
and shape the character.
You are the ones who are making it happen.
We don't know where the story's going.
You will decide.
- Yeah, it's good.
- We want to know what she looks like, don't we?
The face of Liyana.
The way you see Liyana.
You like that one.
Okay.
We've chosen, there she is.
This is our Liyana, we've got Liyana.
And you are going to tell her story.
[soft music]
- [Mkhuleko] Now we have our own Liyana.
And we are writing her story.
- [Child] Let's go!
[soft music]
[cheerful mellow music in foreign language]
[birds chirping]
[cows mooing]
[speaking in foreign language]
[whistling]
[soft music]
[singing in foreign language]
- Okay, okay.
- So, welcome.
[speaking in foreign language]
This is wonderful to do with you today.
I am a storyteller and I write children's books,
but also, I'm the person who's going
to try and work with you
in a very comfortable way so that
you feel free to share your ideas.
We're going to be writing the story of this young girl.
We'll decide what she's like,
where she lives, who does she live with.
Using pictures, we'll use words,
bring all kinds of nice things
so that the story becomes strong
and it is our story.
And there's no right answer or wrong answer.
Only good ideas.
Let's talk about what kind of home she lives in.
[speaks in foreign language]
- [Gcina] Stick and mud, uh-huh.
Should we start making a picture
of the way we see Liyana's home?
Can everybody make a picture?
- Yes. - Yes, okay.
Let's see what the house looks like.
[soft music]
- I think it is a house.
It is a hut.
It is a poor house.
A stick and mud house.
[soft music]
[rooster crows]
- She lives in a small homestead.
- Boom, boom, boom, boom.
Boom, boom.
[thunder grumbles]
And their mother was having big, big pain.
- And then as the twins were coming out,
it went boom, boom. - Boom, boom, boom, boom.
[hissing]
- Do it just two these.
That means twins.
The brothers were twins.
- The babies start to cry.
Wah, wah, wah, wah. [baby crying]
They named the twins...
- Which means thunder and lightning.
[soft music in foreign language]
[soft music in foreign language]
[children chatting]
- The kids that we are working with,
they come from the very dark side of life.
They've been hungry.
They have been in so much pain
and abused and suffering so early in life.
They have those images playing over and over and over
in their minds.
[children chatting]
Working with a fictional character
allows a child to delve into
places that you've covered and stored away.
[children chatting]
So many of these children's real life experiences
are going to end up on this fictional character.
[children chatting] [soft music]
Liyana's afraid of her father.
[children chatting]
- Her father was drinking too much
and he was mean.
- The father was hitting Liyana.
You see, so Liyana hated her father.
- Then Liyana cries.
She cries.
[soft music]
[upbeat dance music]
[upbeat dance music] [laughing]
[laughing]
And they bite him and bite him.
[soft music]
- [Zweli] And then he came home.
- He is sick now.
He becomes more and more weak.
And then suddenly, he died.
Liyana's mother becomes sick too.
- She's going to die soon.
Soon, soon.
Soon, soon.
Soon.
Soon.
They have a sickness.
They have AIDS.
- Liyana, she was trying her best
to take care of her mother.
Liyana's saying...
And then the mother say...
And Liyana tries and begs and begs.
The mother say, "You take care of the family
"and be a good girl",
and Liyana say, "Mother, Mother",
and then she find that it is too late.
[soft music in foreign language]
[soft music]
[soft music in foreign language]
[children yelling and squealing]
Eat, eat, eat, eat, eat, eat.
[roosters clucking]
- Get the eggs.
[laughing]
[children chatting]
[speaking in foreign language]
- What is that thing that triggers her to go on the journey?
What ideas have you had?
What have we been thinking happens to Liyana?
Who wants to start?
- So, Liyana must go and find their aunt
to live with them
because grandmother's very ill.
Wow, we've got lovely ideas.
Who has another idea?
They came, robbers came, yeah?
And then what happened?
They took the twins as well.
What do you say?
You like the one with the robbers.
- The robbers.
- The robbers. - Uh-huh.
- The robbers.
- What do you say?
You choose the robbers as well.
I think that is what we have decided.
Do you see that in your minds?
[soft music]
- She hears a window.
And she hears wind.
[whistling]
[glass shattering]
And they get in.
[screaming]
They run.
Go, go, go, go, go.
They push the grandma.
And then Liyana gets angry.
[grunting]
- Ooh, fell down.
- Then they try to abuse her.
Liyana is trying to stop them
and they didn't stop.
- They tied Liyana up.
Tied her to a big pot.
[murmuring]
They took the twins.
- [Zweli] They take the twins and go.
[soft music]
- As her grandmother is untying Liyana, she says...
- The grandmother said, "I'm too weak and I'm too old.
"I can't go."
So, she says to Liyana...
The mountains that go like this.
- She turns Liyana to go in the mountain
and just go and look for the children.
She said, "What if they kill me?"
- It's not gonna be easy, she knows it.
What would Gogo say to make Liyana feel better?
[speaking in foreign language]
Ah, wonderful.
Do you think Gogo can give something to Liyana?
What is it?
Maybe a necklace.
What else could Gogo give?
[speaking in foreign language]
- That's the shawl that people wear in Swaziland, yes.
"Keep it with you.
"It will remind you of me."
- Go and take the bull.
And go and find them.
You must try.
The twins need you.
She said to the bull,
[speaks in foreign language].
And then the cow say moo.
[soft music in foreign language]
[people mumbling]
And walk and walk.
- Liyana and the cow...
[clicking]
She's on the first rock and say,
"Oh, maybe I can cross".
- When the bull was drinking,
he heard something going...
[breathing heavily]
And then he saw bubbles.
Bubbles, he saw something like a rock.
It was a crocodile.
[gasps]
Oh my goodness.
And our bull goes...
[moos]
- No, I'm not going there.
And the cow...
- And then they made a plan, they made a plan,
and the bull was understanding and understanding
and understanding.
The bull goes [groans], getting more power.
[groans]
It came running.
[creaking]
- Boom!
- There's the cliff there and the river's down there.
Go the cow.
They were snapping.
[snapping]
The big one came.
[screaming]
Snip, snip, snip. - Jumping.
[growling]
One, two, three, four, five, six,
seven, eight, nine, 10.
And snap!
[gurgling] Splash.
- She said, "Hey"...
And she continues.
[soft music]
[children chatting]
[thunder roaring]
[children chatting]
[thunder roaring]
- [Mkhuleko] Liyana goes to the forest.
- And the cow is starting to feel trapped.
- The bull goes to side and sleep.
It go like this.
When it turns really, really dark,
she hears something.
[tapping]
- She picked it up.
- They saw eyes.
[humming] Too many eyes.
[humming]
Eyes all around her.
[shivers]
- Liyana is so scared.
[children chatting]
[speaks in foreign language]
- Here is the hammer with the bolts.
Just big enough.
[speaking in foreign language]
- Goodnight. - Goodnight.
[dog barking]
She wakes up.
Hmm.
[moaning]
Can you see that?
The bull say, "Mmm".
[soft music in foreign language]
- Liyana climbed on top of the bull.
[speaks in foreign language]
[soft music in foreign language]
[birds chirping]
[creaking]
[blanket rustling]
[scratching]
[children chatting]
[mooing]
[dog panting]
[children chatting]
- Go, go!
[children chatting and laughing]
- Liyana was up the hill.
Then...
At the top of the hill.
[whistles]
- Ocean.
- Wow.
I've never seen this before.
And they said...
[gurgling]
It must go drink.
[slurping]
[mooing]
The water tastes like salty armpits.
[laughs]
[laughing]
And she's walking there.
She's just enjoying the beach.
- Okay.
Okay, I think that's enough.
Let's move on.
So let's see what you've written.
Just a few lines.
Let's hear what you've done.
All right.
[laughing] [speaking in foreign language]
- We must listen to one another now.
Please, please.
[speaks in foreign language]
- Danger, darkness, afraid to fail.
Nice, nice images.
Yes, yes.
[speaks in foreign language]
- Then she remember.
Hey bull, let's go.
[soft music in foreign language]
And...
It was hot and the wind was blowing.
And the bull was thirsty.
And then the hyenas come.
- They follow Liyana from a distance.
[ominous music in foreign language]
Liyana start making fire.
She's dizzy.
- Sitting there, looking at the bull.
So hungry.
She takes out her knife.
Run!
- Jump!
[whimpering]
- And they run back away.
- Even though she was so hungry...
- And then they go to sleep.
- They go to sleep.
[soft music]
And in the morning, they wake up and go.
[speaking in foreign language]
- 28 KGs.
[speaking in foreign language]
All right.
[speaking in foreign language]
- It is hot, no water, no food.
Liyana's walking, walking, walking, walking.
She's tired.
- [Sibusiso] She saw a shadow pass.
- She looks up.
[soft music]
- The vulture's flying, waiting for Liyana,
so Liyana's going.
[soft music]
- They know Liyana is getting weak.
[groans]
[soft music]
[speaking in foreign language]
- Then...
What is that?
[gasps]
[soft music]
They are ripe and they're all ready.
And they eat, eat, eat, eat, eat.
[cheerful music in foreign language]
Cow eats and eats.
- Bull?
[giggles]
- Liyana say...
- She say,
And then she falls asleep.
She is dreaming about beautiful things.
[gasps]
Ah, and climb the tree.
Go faster, faster, faster!
Such a beautiful bird.
- The peacock is so nice.
And he's singing a...
- [Mkhuleko] That's almost like the grandmother's voice.
- [Zweli] She remembers her grandmother's words.
Liyana knows it is telling her to keep going.
[soft music in foreign language]
- So, Liyana has faced very dangerous animals
along her journey.
She has faced tiredness and hunger.
And now, she's got to face
her greatest challenge ever.
You're gonna make something big and dangerous.
What is Liyana scared of?
You will decide.
[children chatting]
[singing in foreign language]
[children chatting]
Like this.
[children chatting]
You can make a big, big, big monster.
[growling]
[soft music]
- She walks.
She walks, she walks.
To the top of the mountain.
- And they saw a huge cave.
- She sees...
Now she has a chance.
Creeping, creeping, creeping, creeping, creeping.
She doesn't know what's hiding in the cave.
[soft music]
And it's smelly and quiet.
And then she sneaks in.
Liyana! [gasps]
She sees a chain on the ground.
- The bull starts sniffing.
- [Zweli] She says, "Ssh".
[ominous music]
[gasps]
[growls]
It was huge!
[growling]
- The fight begins.
Run!
Fight!
[growling]
- Liyana picked up something and go.
[growling]
Then the cow.
And then the monster hit the bull.
And then the bull goes...
[moaning]
- Liyana say to the bull, "Wake up, wake up, wake up".
And then Liyana stood up and fight.
[screams]
[growling]
[groans]
- Liyana's down.
[growling]
Then bam!
[screams]
- And then they hold Liyana.
- They take Liyana...
The thieves say to Liyana...
And they say...
...sooner or later."
And they go.
Liyana's just struggling.
Trying to get out of the rope, but the rope is tight.
She's trying, trying, struggling.
- Now it seems like there's nothing she can do.
What can she do?
- Liyana says to the bull,
"I'm sorry that I have brought you here.
"Now they are gonna eat you."
She was just crying.
- I came here to get you, my brothers.
And I failed.
[soft music]
But...
- When Liyana's story keep going
and mine will keep going.
Sometimes it will go low,
and then you start to be brave and brave
and brave and brave...
I want the story to end like...
- I want her to decide to fight.
- She will...
Just try to tear the rope.
- She pulls and pulls and pulls.
[groaning]
Struggling, struggling.
[intense music]
Snap!
Take the rope off.
She goes to untie the cow.
Then she says, "Ssh, quiet",
because she know that the bull,
when you let it free, it go...
[mooing]
But the feet are too strong.
They go...
[clicking]
And Liyana say, "Ssh".
[shushes]
- The monster.
[snoring]
- Then the monster say...
[groaning] Just dreaming, sleep again.
- The key is there on the rock.
[keys jangling]
- Liyana gets to the cage and start to open it.
Be quiet, be quiet.
Out, out, out.
- Ssh.
[gasps]
- And she say, "Oh".
Then she go, she go...
Go faster, faster.
Monster, wake up.
[growling]
- She put the chain up.
The thieves coming.
[yelling]
Singing.
Come on, come on.
[gunshots]
Dive!
[growling]
[screaming]
- They die.
- And then there is one left.
One was gonna run away.
- Done.
[soft music]
Yes.
[soft music]
Oh, my sister.
I have been missing you so much.
[soft music]
So they ask if they can go with Liyana.
- And Liyana says, "Of course you can come".
It's a long, long way back.
And then they go down.
Hiking down, hiking down.
They all get in the boat.
Even the cow.
And they all...
[humming]
- They go and they go and they go.
[soft music in foreign language]
- The grandmother cried with happy tears.
- Welcome home, my child.
And the grandmother say, "I'm so proud of you".
The grandmother asked Liyana,
"Where did you meet all of these children?"
And Liyana said, "Shush."
And the grandmother said yes.
[soft music in foreign language]
- And all the children come and work
and take care of each other.
[soft music in foreign language]
- Time to go now.
Time to go back in.
[soft music in foreign language]
- When people remember about Liyana,
I want them to remember us.
[soft music]
- Liyana was strong.
I'm also strong.
Yeah, I'm sure.
I'm going to write it myself.
And I'm the one who's going to decide how it ends.
- It's not going to be easy.
But it's an adventure.
Yes.
[soft music]
[laughs]
[humming]
[laughs]
- And they have a dance party.
When children beating the drum.
[hums]
