[EPISODE 31]

NO OPEN FLAMES

Be careful.

Wan Qing. This is the turnover from the docks these past few months.

Take a look at it.

You can leave it there.

Are you okay? You look pale.

I'm fine. Go ahead and finish your work.

Close the door, please.

East wind.

The north, south, and west wind all have been discarded.

Yet Commander Tan still dares to discard the east wind?

You aren't afraidthat one of us would win?

The west, south, and north wind are divided amongst you three.

None of you can win. So what would I be afraid of? Red Dragon.

Commander Tan. You are really brave and skillful.

Executive Director. Your Chinese is getting more and more authentic!

Eight Dots.

Brother Guang Yao, you've got a good hand.

You're trying to make all tiles in one suit, right?

Commander Tan,you've got a good hand as well.

You now have time to guesswhat other people's tiles are like.

With mahjong, you just follow your instinct.

If you insist onmaking all tiles in one suit,

you might end up gettinga smaller-than-expected return.

So you all plan to win big.

White Dragon.

President, things are going pretty well.

The men sent by Warlord Pei have sealed off the headquarters.

Good. As soon as the arms and ammunition arrive,

Tan Xuan Lin will die.

What about Mu Wan Qing?

I've asked Mu Wan Ting to put banned drugs

into the warehouse at Mu's Wharf.

It seems

we just have towait for the final victory.

You guys are so weak.

I didn't win once.

I didn't expect Commander Tan to beso good at mahjong.

I'm going to make a lot of money today.

Brother Guang Yao, why are you short of a tile?

Maybe it fell whenwe were shuffling the tiles.

Don't bother. I will just go to the warehouse and get another pair.

Hey, Commander Tan. I don't think that's a good idea.

I know what you're thinking.

How about this? The warehouse is next door.

Since Guang Yao is short of a tile,he can come with me.

How about that?

Okay. I'll go with him.

What do you think?

Please.

Come on. Choose a pair of mahjong tiles you like.

What do you mean? What are you doing?

I'm doing this to prove your innocence.

Only if you cut off all contact with the outside world

will people not talk about you.

I'm an asshole. Please stay out of my business.

I don't care what happenedbetween you and Wan Qing.

But now, you're still her fiancé.

If anything happens to you, it is bound to bring trouble to her.

It was my father who reported you this time.

Once you show a mistake, he won't let you off the hook.

So… I can't take the risk.

Do you know that

you are now acting as an accomplice to your father?

I'm trying to save you.

Save me?

The way you will save me is to let me sit still waiting for death?

Do you know that your father is using the

Japanese Chamber of Commerce to kill me?

I bet you didn't know

he defeated Luo Bing Wen ten years ago like this.

It was all because ofthis Junichi Yamashita.

Mr. Yamashita. Japanese.

You're back?

What about Supervisor Xu?

He said he'll go downstairs to buy a pack of cigarettes.

He told us to wait for him.

Look. Hey, kid.

What kind of cigarettes do you want?

Two packs of Hatamen.

Here you go.

Keep the change. You can go back and count it.

Thank you, Uncle.

Supervisor Xu is such a heavy smoker.

Here it is. I didn't even see it.

The tiles are all here.

Then we don't need this pair of mahjong tiles.

Why don't we shuffle the tiles first? Let's wait for him.

The tiles are all here.

We've been searching for a long time.

You're all tired, right? Come on.

Have a cigarette to refresh yourselves.

Just now, we found that missing tile.

Who is it?

I'm here for the money.

Come on in.

Kid.

What do you come to me for?

Just now at headquarters, one of the officers bought my cigarettes,

and he gave me a stack of money.

When I counted the money, I found some words written on it.

[HURRY UP TO ROOM 305, LICHA HOTEL - DOUBLE REWARD]

[AVOID THE WATER TODAY]

Where's my reward?

Let me ask you something.

The officer who bought your cigarettes… What did he look like?

He was tall, big, and very energetic.

Then why didn't he come by himself?

I don't know. But today, no one came in or out of the headquarters all morning.

The officer called me over to buy some cigarettes.

Okay. Thank you. Come on.

- Goodbye, Uncle. - Goodbye.

Sir. Are we exposed?

Commander Tan said to avoidthe water today.

That means we shouldn't go to the pier.

Commander Tan used this methodto send us a message.

That means thathe is also being monitored.

If I don't go and those arms and ammunition are discovered,

we'll be puttingCommander Tan in jeopardy.

But if we go there now,we'll be walking into a trap.

Not only will we be unable to transfer the arms and ammunition,

but even Commander Tan would be unable to escape.

Wan Qing, are you going outside?

I don't know why my head hurts so much today.

I'm going to have a cup of coffee.

Okay.

[CAFE]

Thank you.

- A cup of coffee, please. - Okay, just a moment, please.

Thank you.

One Dot.

I win.

How did you win again?

Forget it. I'm not playing.

Pay up first! Pay up first! Come on!

Let me count how much I've won today.

Commander Tan. It's past noon.

Maybe members from the Revolutionary Party have gotten arrested.

Good. Well done.

I'd like to see which one of these bastards got me into trouble.

It's been so long. Why isn't she back yet?

Should we go and check?

We have to go and check. What if we lost her?

Hey, she's back.

Okay, this way.

Hurry up.

Report!

The goods have arrived at the pier and are temporarily stored in Warehouse Six.

According to the informant

there are more than ten boxes of rifle cartridges

and eight heavy machine guns.

That's more than enoughto equip two regiments.

The Revolutionary Party spent quite a bit this time.

However, men from the Revolutionary Party didn't show up.

The goods are still in the warehouse. But there was no one to pick them up.

Yes.

The men from the Revolutionary Party didn't show up.

Brother Zuo, don't look at me like that.

I've been playing mahjong with you. I haven't even gotten past the doors.

You don't suspect me, do you?

It's too early to draw any conclusions.

Commander Tan. How about this?

Let's go to the pier to inspect the goods.

If it's arms and ammunition, you'll see it with your own eyes.

You wouldn't be able to say thatwe've tampered with it.

If it's not, you don't have to worry.

Our investigation teamwill definitely clear your name.

Okay. Just do as you said.

Good. Please.

- Come on. - Okay.

- Hurry up. - Coming.

6

Commander Tan. Please.

Brother Zuo,

I borrowed this warehouse from Mr. Joseph, a friend of the Executive Director.

But I don't know what's inside.

I'm just doing some small business. But the contact didn't show up.

You're not going to blame mefor that, are you?

Commander Tan.

I don't care if you rented this warehousefor business or for arms shipments.

But if the arms and ammunition are found in the warehouse today,

that means this report is by no means a groundless rumor.

Then Commander Tan, it'll be hard to clear your name.

You jump to conclusions so soon.

Staff Officer Zuo.

Even if you found arms and ammunition here,

it's a bit arbitrary to conclude that Commander Tan

was working with the enemy.

He's right.

There is a tip-offand hard physical evidence.

I don't think the Commanderwould be treated unfairly.

Let's go.

- Put it away. - What do we do now?

If they find the arms and ammunition, and they take the Commander away,

we would have to resort to force.

Report, Officer! All the boxes only have bowls and chopsticks.

- Go and get the man in charge. -Yes.

Officer, is there a problem?

All the goods that arrived in Warehouse Six today, are they all in here?

Officer. This is Warehouse Nine.

Warehouse Six is in the back.

Isn't this Warehouse Six? There is a sign saying it's six over there.

This is not a six.

Some careless worker must have hung the sign upside down.

Could it have been her?

- Where is Warehouse Six? - It is over there.

- Take us there. . - Sure. Come with me.

Commander Tan, take it easy. We'll just take a look.

Please.

Let's go and keep up with them.

- Let's go.- Hurry.

Okay.

This is six, not nine.

Look at this wine.

On my command.

Report, Officer!

The boxes are filled with all kinds of wines and foreign liquors.

Look. This is a foreign liquor from 1916. You might as well smell it.

Come on.

Commander Tan.

These are your own warehouses. Didn't you know they were wrong?

Brother Zuo. I've already told you. I'm just a careless person.

I do business here mainly to earn money.

I don't care about anything elsebut the money.

I really didn't know.

It's too much of a coincidence to make a mistake like this.

Brother Zuo. Look. We've checked everything that needed to be checked.

And I was doing my best to cooperate.

So please stop wasting all of our time.

Yes.

Maybe the information was wrong or it was just a misunderstanding.

That's right.

Wait! It's not a misunderstanding.

I think it's a false accusation.

I don't know who I offended to make him do this to me.

Don't let me catch him.

Although we didn't find any evidence today,

there's something strange about the warehouse.

I can't rule out the possibilityof tampering with evidence.

Regarding this matter,I will report to Beijing with the details.

The Warlord will decide what to do with this investigation.

Commander Tan. You're still a suspect.

I need you to come with me. Soldiers!

Staff Officer Zuo. I don't think it's appropriate to arrest someone like this.

Supervisor Xu. I'm not arresting anyone.

I'm asking Commander Tan to returnto assist us in our investigation.

If someone suspects something odd about this matter today,

there will be doubts about Commander Tan's innocence.

It would leave a stain on Commander Tan's future,

which is not a good thing for him either.

A clean hand wants no washing.

Commander Tan. If you are really innocent,

then the more carefully we investigate, the better it will be for you.

Fine. Since Brother Zuo is so cautious,

I will try my best to cooperate.

Please.

I can't believe it.

How could you make a mistake like this?

I don't know.

That's not possible.

How could the armsand ammunition disappear suddenly?

The investigation team did not findthe arms and ammunition.

But Staff Officer Zuostill remains suspicious.

He temporarily detained Tan Xuan Linat the LICHA Hotel,

and he is seeking advice from Beijingon how to deal with this matter.

What about Mu Wan Qing?

Our men have been following her.

She was at the cafe the whole time.

And she went home after drinking coffee.

She didn't go anywhere else.

That's strange.

Where the hell couldthe arms and ammunition have gone?

Yes.

Warlord.

[NO ARMS WERE FOUND BUT STAFF OFFICER ZUOSTILL DETAINED TAN FOR INVESTIGATION.]

They didn't find the arms?

Yes.

Staff Officer Zuo detained Tan Xuan Linand will continue with the investigation.

We couldn't catch him with the goods.

That means we've lost the lead.

It seems

we need to ready two strings to our bow.

Warlord, what you means is…

Warlord.

Hello?

Hello. Is this the LICHA Hotel? Yes.

Could you getMr. Su Hong Chen on the phone for me?

One moment, please.

Didn't I say I'd to treat you to dinner?

Do you still want my answer?

You are…

We are from the headquarters.

Commander Tan asked us to escort Miss Gu.

- Miss Gu.- Miss Gu.

Little Uncle?

Report! I've checked.

There was onlyone pickup from Warehouse Six

between 12:00 and 13:00today at the Shanghai Bund.

Here is the delivery order. It has the signature ofthe person who picked it up.

Because the warehouse numberswere mixed up,

[SHANGHAI BUND PIER DELIVERY VOUCHER]it's signed Warehouse Nine.

Why is it in Japanese?

Did you ask whoever is in charge ofthe pier about this person?

He said it was a young man.

Brother Zuo.

Commander Tan.

Before we continue, I'd like to ask youto stay here for a few days.

It's okay. It's quite nice here.

It's much better than my office.

We know what happened.

Commander Tan,on the grounds of doing business,

asked Mr. Joseph to borrow Shanghai…

Brother Zuo. Let me correct you.

It was not onthe grounds of doing business.

I'm just a businessman.

Fine. Let me correct you. Commander Tan wants to do,

there are some thingsthat needs to be clear.

Okay, Brother Zuo. What do you want me to explain?

This is a delivery order fromthe Shanghai Bund at 12:30 today.

When we checked Warehouse Nine,a shipment came out of Warehouse Six.

Commander Tan.

Don't you want to knowwho the shipper was?

Who was it?

Do I know him?

Yes.

You two are pretty close.

Pretty close?

People who are close to meare either my friends

or… my enemies.

I honestly can't guess.

Why don't youmake it clearer for me, Brother Zuo?

Since you cannot guess, I'll spare you the effort.

Once we've made a thorough investigation,

we'll know everything.

Okay. Staff Officer Zuo.

Then I'll wait for your good news.

Okay. Then we'll leave you to rest.

We will go now.

- Hello? - Hello? I'm Su Hong Chen.

Did Miss Gu call me just now?

Someone from the headquarters came

saying that Commander Tan requestedthe presence of Miss Gu.

Tan Xuan Lin?

Miss Gu?

Our Commander is still being held bythe investigation team.

Why would he ask for Miss Gu at this time?

Could the investigation teamhave summoned Miss Gu?

That's impossible. The investigation teamwould have informed us.

[THE DEFENSE COMMAND OF SHANGHAI]

Go inside.

Miss Gu.

It's been a long time.

Aren't you Xu Bo Jun's assistant?

Miss Gu. You have a good memory.

I saw you from afar atthe Mu Family party.

But I don't think we've had much contact.

Why did you bring me here?

I've invited Miss Gu hereto request for a favor.

I'm just an actress.

I don't know anything aboutmilitary affairs.

I'm sorry I can't help you.

Miss Gu. Don't turn me down so quickly.

You are the only one… who can help with this.

[SHANGHAI PUBLIC CONCESSIONGENERAL POLICE STATION]

- Put your money on the table, all of you! - Don't hesitate!

Do you hear me?

Miss Gu Yue Shuang from the Dahua Companyhas been kidnapped.

So much?

Stop!

- Stop grabbing it.- Hurry and find her for me now!

Right. Okay.

Let's go and find her quickly!

I'm sorry.

Go and find her for me at once.

Although her nameis not on the delivery order,

where could she havehidden the arms and ammunition?

If she hid them in Mu's Wharf, and they find out…

I didn't expect such things to happen.

- The warehouse is full of wine bottles. - The wines in the warehouseare really good wines.

Report!

- You may go.- Yes.

Sirs, looks like we're going to Mu's Wharf.

Mu's Wharf?

Someone reported thatthere's contraband at Mu's Wharf.

What?

Staff Officer Zuo! Staff Officer Zuo!

- Staff Officer Zuo!- Stop!

Where's Staff Officer Zuo? I need to see him for something important.

We've just received a report thata new lead was found at Mu's Wharf.

Staff Officer Zuohas already rushed over there.

Please calm down, Commander Tan.

Staff Officer Zuo saidhe will arraign you.

Let me know as soon as he comes back. Thank you.

If it was Wan Qing who changedthe signs in front of the warehouse,

she must have used the wrong warehouse totemporarily stall the investigation team.

That would mean thatshe probably moved the arms and ammunition

while we were checking Warehouse Nine.

If the informant saw Wan Qingmove the arms and ammunition,

he wouldn't have waiteduntil now to report it.

If the informant had foundthe arms and ammunition at Mu's Wharf,

then given Staff Officer Zuo's temper,

he would have definitely taken mewith him

and make me confess on the spot.

He didn't take me with him.

But he allowed one of his mento inform me of the news.

It's very likely thathe doesn't have a clue.

So, he may not have the evidence.

These are your own warehouses.Didn't you know they were wrong?

He must be trying to trick me.

That must be the case.

She'll be fine.

It's okay.

- Miss Mu.- Officer.

Why did you call me over at this hour?

There's a report sayingyou have contraband in your warehouse.

We rented this place out.

Whatever's inside, I do not know.

Whether you know it or not… We'll find out when we open it.

These goods belong to another person.

It's not right for me to openthe warehouse without their presence.

What? Is Miss Mu afraid thatwe'd find something?

Is that why she wouldn't let us see?

I know that you went to Josephto rent the pier together.

Where did Tan Xuan Linhide the arms and ammunition?

I've already told you. I'm just an actress.

I'm just an actress.

I don't know anything aboutthe arms and ammunition.

Since you have someone watching my Little Uncle,

shouldn't you be asking your men this question?

You don't have tobeat around the bush with me.

If you don't tell me, I'll make you suffer.

Xu Bo Jun is no longer in power

Shanghai is now Little Uncle's territory.

Just try making me suffer…

and we'll see who suffers in the end.

Are you threatening me?

I'm so scared.

I won't go easy on youjust because you're an actress.

Tell me the truth now, so that I won't hit you.

You're like a dog relying on its master.

Even Xu Bo Jun is no match for my Little Uncle

especially against you lapdogs.

Good for you. You're so tough.

Since you don't wantto listen to my kind words,

we'll do it the hard way.

Hit her.

Yes.

How is it, Miss Actress?

Weren't you quite arrogant just now?

I'm telling you.

Killing you is as easy as killing an ant.

Come on. Tell me the whereabouts of the arms and ammunition,

and I'll let you go.

I've told you.

I don't know anything.

You can have me killed if you want.

I really don't know anything about it.

- Have you seen her? - No.

Have you seen her?

No.

Junior Marshal! Junior Marshal Su!

Any news on the rest of them?

Junior Marshal Su. Shanghai is so big.

We've only searched less than half of it.

Tell the patrolmen to inform the civilians that

whoever finds Gu Yue Shuang will receive one thousand silver dollars.

Gather everyone to find her together!

- Yes!- We'll get going!

These are all Western medicine.

Yes. How can it be all Western medicine?

These are contraband.

Steward. Whose goods are these?

My lady. The militia withdrew two days ago.

You see… We can't even take good care ofthe business at the pier.

We… We really don't have the staffto take care of the warehouse.

That means you don't knowwho this shipment belongs to.

And you didn't keep any records, right?

- Now that they've been found out, aren't I the only one to blame?- This…

Miss Mu. It seems that this tip-off is true.

Western medicine is contraband.

If you can't provide uswith the owner's information,

then please come with us.

My lady.

Here is the delivery order.

Officer. You can see that this shipment came fromthe Shanghai Bund,

[SHANGHAI BUND DELIVERY VOUCHER]and we don't know when it was put there.

[SHANGHAI BUND DELIVERY VOUCHER]

It seems the boxes here werethe ones that were relocated

from Warehouse Six this morning.

Miss Mu. Although this shipment did not come toyour pier originally,

you are still guilty ofthe dereliction of duty.

That would be biased of you to say so.

Cargo inspection is a matter for the pier.

If this is dereliction of duty, the Shanghai Bund should be to blame.

You should go to Mr. Joseph about this.

Staff Officer Zuo.

It's now been established that

the shipments that left the Bund today

were not arms and ammunitionbut Western medicine.

Then the top priority here should beto find the owner of these shipments

and bring him to justice,

not to hold Miss Muand Joseph responsible.

Anyway, they were also kept in the dark.

They are both victims.

It seems they were set up

in order to conceala Western medicine smuggling business.

[VOUCHER PLACEMENT. WAREHOUSE NINE.YAMATO TRADING CORPORATION.]

Japanese?

It says Yamato Trading Corporation.

It seems to be a Japanese trading company.

These damn Japanese. They're playing us for fools!

We have to report this matter to Beijing.

We must investigatethis Yamato Trading Corporation.

All the Japanese were sent to the Consulatefor repatriation.

Did you see it all clearly just now?

From now on, you must walk and behaveexactly like Miss Mu.

Staff Officer Zuo.

What do you mean?

Supervisor Xu. Caution is the parent of safety.

If Commander Tanreally collaborated with the enemy,

and we make him think we had Miss Mu

it would force him to give himself away.

We now know that the shipment was a ploy planned by the Japanese.

Since it has nothing to do with Commander Tan,

he should be released immediately.

It's inappropriate to frame himand make a false accusation like this.

Supervisor Xu. Watch what you're saying.

I'm not framing him. It's just a test.

If Commander Tan is really innocent,he wouldn't give himself away.

But what if Commander Tanreally collaborated with the enemy?

If you and I wereto make a hasty decision like this,

it may causeendless trouble to the future.

Staff Officer Zuo. I don't think this is a good idea.

Supervisor Xu. From the beginning,

the Warlord's Mansion gave me instructions for Tan Xuan Lin.

It stands to reason that youshould stick to figuring out the truth.

But you try every means to obstruct it.

What are you up to?

Was your tip-off false from the beginning?

It doesn't hurt to test him.

A clean hand wants no washing, right?

Staff Officer Zuo is just doinghis job to make sure nothing goes wrong.
