Original subtitles

Oh, hey, Mom. What are you doing in here?

Hey, Steph's son.

I'm so happy you're actually awake.

I mean, barely.

Are you going to help your mother out today?

I mean, I'm kind of busy.

I've got a bunch of stuff going on.

Oh, yeah.

What kind of stuff could you possibly have going on today?

Well, I'm supposed to hang out with my friends, I have homework to do, and

there's this new video game I wanted to play.

Hmm. But now you know that your mother needs help, you're going to stay and

help, right?

I mean, I guess I could help.

Good.

Because I need you to help me send a couple of messages to people.

Really? I mean, I'm kind of too tired to help come up with anything like that. Do

you really need my help?

Just a little bit.

Well, what kind of message are you trying to send?

I want to send everybody their own special message.

Seriously? You have to send a personalized message to everyone? Can't

you just send one massive message and send it to everyone?

No, because that's not polite. What's polite is making everyone feel special

and welcome and making sure that everyone gets everything they want.

That takes so much time, though, Mom.

You don't have to make it special for every single person.

Yes, I do.

Otherwise, it could just be any party. This is a party with us, and our parties

are the best.

I mean, you do throw some pretty amazing parties, but you're always wanting to go

all bougie with it.

You know, it's okay to have a normal party.

We just got this nice new house. We might as well make it nice and bougie,

right?

I mean, I guess, but it seems like we've got a lot of work to do just for other

people to have a good time.

Well, that's why you're going to help me do all the work, right?

I mean, I could definitely help you do most of the work, but as long as it

doesn't get in the way of all the stuff I told you I still wanted to do.

Hmm. I can't promise anything, but I can do my best to make sure that you have

ample time to do all the things.

So what are you saying in your message?

I'm trying to say we're so excited to have you guys come over today.

Keep getting your cock all wet so it's making it hard.

to text but it's doing a pretty good job yeah i mean i guess it is a pretty good

stylist i never would have thought to use it like that before i've been

thinking about it for a while i'm glad it's working out so how many total

people do you have to message um well probably

like oh i know i invited 10.

Ten people.

But I'm thinking about inviting another couple of neighbors down the street.

I met them the other day and they seemed really nice.

Nice.

Well, I mean, hopefully they're cool.

I thought they seemed pretty cool.

Not as cool as you are, but pretty cool.

Do they have any kids of their own? I mean, it would be kind of cool to hang

out with some people my own age.

I know that the Johnsons have another boy about your age, and I'm pretty sure

the Smiths have a very attractive girl, but I don't want you spending too much

time with other girls, you know?

I kind of like having you to myself.

Yeah, I know, because Dad's never around, and you're always wanting help

around the house, so you always come to me, and, well, I guess I can help where

I can.

Well, I appreciate all your help.

I appreciate how sweet you are to me, always taking care of things with me and

doing things with me.

You're the best son a mother could ever ask for.

Are you still working on the same message, or have you been able to send a

few out already?

I'm sending this one now.

Sent. Now we just gotta text a few other people.

Let's see.

Well,

I guess you could probably just wait to see if they'll reply.

Maybe.

Maybe we'll just have some fun while we're at it, huh?

I missed you all night.

Did Dad not ever really come home?

No. You know he doesn't like to come home on the weekends.

I mean, I guess you should have just came into my room if you were so lonely.

I thought about it, but I was so anxious about this party today.

I couldn't sleep and I didn't want to keep you up all night.

I'm sorry, Mom. You know you can bother me anytime you want.

You're so sweet.

What did I ever do to end up with a son like you?

I'll always be there for you. You know that.

You're so good to me.

Thank you for staying and helping me today.

Of course.

That's what a good stepson would do.

We gotta reply.

Oh, someone's being more people.

Are you serious?

The house has to be super nice.

I'm gonna need you to stay and do a bunch of stuff with me.

Man, it's gonna be a long day, isn't it?

You're gonna have fun, I know it.

Alright, I'll come down and help you in a little bit.

for you for a half an hour. Where have you been?

I was still sleeping. I told you I was tired when you came into my room and

bugged me.

Well, now we have a half an hour less time to take care of this stuff. I need

you to help me fold napkins, please.

Fine. What do you need me to do? I need you to fold the napkins nicely and put

them on the table for me.

Yeah, well, I don't really know how you want it folded. Could you maybe show me?

This is how we fold napkins.

You should know how to do this by now. How many times have I shown you how to

fold napkins?

Well, a few times, but you also know I don't really like doing it to begin

with. Well,

you like helping your mother, don't you?

I mean, yes, I do like helping you.

It takes the load off, but you're always asking me to do stupid stuff for the

neighbors.

It's not stupid.

It's nice to be nice to people and to give them nice things.

Here, let me show you how to fold the napkin again, okay?

Make it a nice, even rectangle.

See, you just do it way nicer than I do. There's no reason I need to be helping

you with this.

Have you ever heard the term weaponized incompetence?

Because you're very good at it.

Look, I don't even need to see them to do a good job with them.

Well, you practically fold everything all the time in this house. I mean,

think of all the laundry you have to do.

I know.

You don't have any idea.

Honestly,

I just like taking shortcuts. You always want to do the hard way.

Well... The hard way is the best way.

I'm sure you know a little bit about the hard way.

Right? I mean, yeah, but... You know how I get. I just...

I really don't want to put the time, energy, and effort in anything that I

don't enjoy.

Well, you enjoy helping your mother, don't you?

Of course.

So, you enjoy doing nice things for people, right?

Well, I guess some people, but definitely not all people.

Just ones I like.

Maybe you'll like the neighbors after this party.

I mean, one could hope.

That's kind of the point, you know.

So why do you have to clean all the silverware? Can't you just put it down

on the table?

Everything has to look nice. You know that.

Everything has to be clean.

Everything has to be perfect.

Just like you.

Aw, thanks, Mom.

I mean, those silverware do look spotless.

Mm-hmm.

I mean, do you really think the guests are going to notice, though, a few water

spots on them?

Maybe not, but I will.

I don't like water spots.

I like things to look exactly the way they should.

Like when they were new.

Well, nothing can look new all the time.

It can if you try hard enough.

Yeah, isn't that nice?

You know,

I really do appreciate you helping me.

It makes my life a lot easier.

Well, if I'm being honest, this stuff is ridiculous and super boring.

I could be playing my video games right now or playing with my friends.

Or taking a nap. I already told you I'm super tired.

Yeah, I suppose you could be doing all of those things, but you do those things

all the time.

You know that's why your life is such a mess.

All you ever do is sleep, lounge, play video games,

hang out with your friends.

Have you ever even thought about your future?

What you're going to do with your life?

I mean, of course I've thought about my future and what I'm going to do with my

life.

Yeah?

Well, I mean, for starters, I got to finish school first, and then I was

thinking about going to college for video games.

How do you go to college for video games?

Well, I was going to study some courses that could get me into graphic design

and things like that.

But, I mean, the one thing I've been really getting interested in is

photography.

Yeah?

Yeah, I mean you got me a camera over Christmas and I've been playing with it

in my free time with my friends so I

Mean did you think I wasn't gonna use the gift you got

me?

It's only understandable, but I think it's really sweet that you like it and

that you use it.

So, I mean, I feel like you're probably not living the life that you expected,

right, Mom?

Well, of course.

I mean, it's hard not to when you're always on my case about what you want me

to do.

Well, I just care about you.

I want you to live a good, fulfilling life.

And I want you to enjoy yourself.

I want you to love everything about your life all the time.

So I'm glad that you're taking an interest.

I'm glad that you're thinking about it. I'm glad you're trying new things.

I just wish you wouldn't spend so much time doing a bunch of nothing.

You only see me doing nothing because, well, when you're home, that's all I

want to do is relax.

Well, that's why I try to keep you busy with things like this party.

Honestly, you shouldn't care so much about what the neighbors think.

Nobody really pays attention to all the work you put into. You know that, Mom.

Well, I pay attention to it, and that's the important thing. It's important to

me.

But I appreciate that you care so much.

You know, I'm very proud of the life I've created for my son and

myself.

You'll understand when you have a family, which I hope isn't until you're

60. I mean, it's definitely not going to be for a while, that's for sure.

Are you almost done, honey?

We have another room to finish.

Yeah.

Now, come help me in the other room, please.

Fine.

Why are you always so late? You were always making me so late.

Oh, come on, Mom. You know I was tired, and I didn't really want to help you

with that table earlier anyways.

Well, don't you look so handsome.

You look very nice.

Aw, thank you, Mom.

Thank you for putting in the effort. I really appreciate it.

Of course. I mean, you know I'd do anything for you.

That's because you're such a good boy.

We still have a lot of cleaning left to do, you know.

Yeah, you're right.

And this living room is huge.

Don't worry, we'll get there together.

You just gotta clean up a few things while we're going.

Okay.

Half this stuff already looks so clean, Mom.

Well, it has to look absolutely spotless if we're going to be having guests.

You're such a perfectionist.

Yeah, well, you don't usually mind it.

At least everything you own stays nice and clean, right?

Yeah. You don't have to worry about anything.

i don't usually hear you complain about it well i mean the house is always clean

to perfection so well that's what happens when

you're a stay-at-home wife you don't really just have to take care of your

family and make sure everyone's good

So you like that everything's clean, right?

Of course.

But I think I'm the only one that really knows all the hard work you put into

this place to keep it so clean.

Well, thank you. I really appreciate that. And I appreciate all the hard work

you do for me, too.

You're always very sweet and entertaining me and helping me while I'm

keeping things nice and clean for everyone.

Do I really have to keep following you around though while you clean? Can I

just go sit down for a bit?

Okay, you can go take a break. Go sit down.

You know, it's always so nice having you around the house.

I'm glad you stayed and helped me.

Of course.

I mean, no one else was going to help you around here, that's for sure.

You're not wrong about that.

But you're very sweet and thoughtful for helping me.

I know. I know I don't usually get a lot of help, but it's always very nice to

have you home helping me out.

You know, before I became your mom, I stayed home taking care of you and your

dad.

There were lots of things I wanted to do.

Well, what were some of your old dreams that you used to have?

You know, I always thought that I would be a writer.

A writer?

A writer.

I always loved to read and write short stories.

I always thought that I would be a someday novelist someday.

But life changes.

I met your father, and I thought he liked that I wanted to be a writer, but

you wanted me to be a stay-at-home wife, so I've been doing that instead ever

since.

Wow, I can't believe you gave up everything just so you could be a stay

-at-home mom.

Well, not everything. I mean, I still like to read, I still like to write.

Just not professionally, I suppose.

Hmm.

I would say I also really like art.

I really like painting, calligraphy, things like that.

But I like taking care of you.

Yeah? Yeah.

So what's your favorite thing about being...

I stay at home mom.

Taking care of you.

Making sure everything is nice.

Cooking dinners. That's very artistic.

I mean, you are an amazing cook. That's for sure.

I've definitely never had a complaint about my cooking. I know that.

Yeah, I always do like cooking for you.

And I like taking care of you. I like keeping your room clean, the house

clean.

I do enjoy this, but I did give up a lot to do this, and there are a lot of

things I wish I could have done.

What are things you wish you could do? What are your dreams?

I mean, right now, honestly, other than going to play video games with friends

and sleeping more, I haven't thought too much about it.

But enough about really what I want to do, Mom.

Do you think...

Over the next few years, you'll get back into all the stuff you loved that you

gave up on?

Maybe. Maybe I will. I'll have a lot more time after you're out of the house,

which I'm assuming will happen.

I mean, is that why you're trying to push me to do something more?

No, I'm trying to push you because you can do something more. Because you have

a whole bright future ahead of you.

You should do something good with your life.

That's the only reason I push you.

You just have to have a great life.

You should do something great with your life, because you're great.

There really is just so much you can do with yourself and your life if you put

effort into it.

I know you will.

You're a smart boy.

Well, do you regret anything, Mom?

About this?

No.

What's there to regret?

I have a wonderful life.

I have a wonderful son.

I mean, your dad's not perfect, but nobody is.

And he really is a good husband. He's a good provider.

He's there, you know, and he's there, and he takes care of us and everybody

else.

You know?

But no, I don't have any regrets. If I could, I would do all of this over

again.

I mean, at least Dad's taking care of you in some ways, making sure that

all the bills are paid and you've got a roof over your head.

Yes. But I do hope that you're able to get back to trying to do the things you

love. Well, you know, the nice thing about the things that I love is they

really are free, you know?

I can do them anytime I want. I just have to have the motivation and the

skill.

i can always hone my craft i can always get better at it you know it's just like

you if you decide to be a photographer it's just something you would have to do

and have to get better at and learn you know just like any other skill but maybe

we could both be artists together who knows so what's your favorite thing to

paint i like flowers i like plants that's why there are always so many

around the house but you know i've always wanted to do things like the

artwork we have.

I've always wanted to make the world a more beautiful place.

I mean, you painted those flower paintings on the wall, right? The red

ones?

Um, no.

Oh, I could have swore that you did.

No, I did a different red flower painting.

It's why it's in the guest bathroom.

I'm sure you don't remember it. It's probably been a while since you've seen

it. Yeah, it has.

But, you know, those were kind of my inspiration.

Just, I'm not that talented yet.

I mean, I think you're pretty good.

Yeah? Mm-hmm.

Well, I really appreciate that. That's very sweet of you.

I just hope, you know, one day my work pleases people. That's really all

I ever want to do is make other people happy.

Oh, well, you make me happy.

I mean, I've only ever seen everybody smiling when they're around you, so you

clearly make everybody happy that you're around.

You're so sweet, but I can't satisfy anyone. I can't even satisfy my own son.

What? Don't be like that, Mom.

You satisfy me all the time. I'm the one that doesn't know how to please you.

You know that's not true.

You always please me.

You always make me happy.

Well... I mean, if you say so.

I do say so.

I always say so.

Well, can I go sit down again?

I'm kind of getting tired.

Yes. I don't want to distract you from any more of your dusting.

I'm sure it's well dusted enough.

It is nice to get a chance to relax a little bit.

But I can still do other things.

Make sure all the pillows are nice and fluffed for the guests.

Don't want anyone to be uncomfortable.

What do you think of my new couch anyway?

Yeah, I mean, we have had this one for years.

I think a nice section would be good.

Ooh, I'm getting some texts back.

Johnson said they could come. That's great.

The Smiths, too.

You know, their son James is going to NYU for art.

Really? Yeah.

Maybe it's something you could talk to him about, you know, for photography.

Yeah, I guess. I mean, if you think it'll help.

Get me out of the house and start working towards something that you

actually like.

Well, I want it to be something that you like. Something for you.

Am I being too hard on you?

I mean, I don't think so. I just really like spending time with you.

And maybe I just don't want to go anywhere.

Aww.

You're so sweet.

But you have to live your own life.

Don't make the same mistakes I did.

You know, don't live for other people your whole life.

You gotta do things you want to do for you that make you happy and bring you

satisfaction and success.

Aw, thanks, Mom. I really appreciate those words.

You deserve the best.

Always. Forever.

So, who did you say was coming again?

Um, looks like it's gonna be the Johnsons and the Smiths.

And, oh, Katarina said she was coming.

Shirley's bringing Bill.

Looks like everybody I invited is coming.

I wonder if I got enough hors d'oeuvres.

I mean, you always order enough food for a whole city.

I'm pretty sure a few neighbors will be fine.

Well, I hope so.

I just hope they don't have any allergies that I didn't know about. Do

you think I should have asked if anyone needed...

I don't know, almond milk or something?

Oh, I'm sure they'll be fine.

If not, they can always go home and get their own food.

Well, I would just feel so bad if someone came over and it turned out they

were gluten-free and I didn't get anything with no gluten in it.

I guess they could eat the fruit plate.

Yeah, there's always something here for anyone that's picky.

I mean, there's a salad.

That's true.

I did get the veggie platter, but...

i don't know i just hope nobody gets bored hope everyone has fun i mean you

always throw the best parties so well

i think i'm gonna make sure everything is okay because i think i remembered

this plant being a little off-center oh

mom your attention to details seriously

It's so amazing, but that plant was fine. You don't have to get all crazy

like that just for some neighbors.

Well, it's important that everybody feels comfortable and welcome

and that everything looks nice for everybody.

But you know, I really appreciate all the hard work you've done. The house

looks great.

You look great.

You've really done a lot of work, and I really appreciate you helping me out.

Aw, thanks, Mom. That really means a lot. I honestly feel like I didn't

really do a whole lot around the house, but I did help you where I could, you

know? Yeah, definitely.

I appreciate all your work.

All the work you've done today.

You really are special, you know that?

You really make everything worth it

Well, doesn't the house look so nice and pretty?

I mean, we did really do a great job cleaning up this place.

This was just what I needed.

Well, I guess we should start getting the food out. Guests should be arriving

soon. Yeah, you're right, Mom. I can't wait to try all that amazing food you

made. You're so sweet.

Thank you. This was perfect.
