Out of all the prospecting missions Kim could have given us, he's gone and given

us one on the salt flats where we need to jet ski in to get there.

Not exactly what I'd planned for on my first trip to the Pilbara.

I'm going to be leaning on Kyle out here in the Pilbara because this is his

backyard. Luckily, I was able to find a mate who said that we could borrow his

for a thousand bucks for the week, which is just unreal.

familiar gold ground in far north Queensland to team up with mining

entrepreneur Kyle Wilson in the isolated Northern Territory.

But when the wet season forced them out... There's lightning!

..they travelled over 2,000 kilometres to Kyle's home patch in Western

Australia's barren Pilbara region.

We have to make the gold go to the west. This is going to be interesting.

And we've got to go out and start detecting some of these tidal creeks.

They're all flowing in and out of gold country. No-one's gone in there because

it's just in excess.

Determined to prove themselves as lease explorers to mining magnate Kim North...

..they've travelled by water more than 50km from the nearest town.

to track down new gold deposits on the 125-hectare Caliber Cove lease.

When we get up to the inlet, that's going to give us access to Kim's

exploration lease.

Getting to keep what gold they find in exchange for the GPS coordinates of

their discoveries.

We need to get past this thick mangrove-y zone.

Up in the territory, we got 19 ounces of gold. We really just want to bank that

gold. So we've upped our target. We're going for 40 ounces now. Full reset,

It's no real surprise that Kim hasn't sent anybody else out here. This is

pretty bloody hard going. But at the same time, it's also a little humbly.

You know, I've known him for years. We met through a mate, and while he can be

a bit of a tough nut to crack, he's given me and Jackie a mission that seems

a little impossible.

But it must have meant that he thought that we had the ability to pull it off.

I feel a little bad for Jackie. You know, I've brought her over to WA, and

the first place I've brought her...

is salt flats and it doesn't get much harder than this in terms of detecting

so the little things that get you by surprise here seeing it into a hole in

the mudflats getting eaten alive by midges and mosquitoes or just getting

swamped by flies we're on a tidal flat and in a king tide the water can get up

as far as waist deep for millions of years rivers washed gold from inland

ranges to the coast where powerful king tides trapped and concentrated it in the

tidal flats.

From the surface, these flats appear solid, but beneath lies dangerous,

saturated sediment that can behave like quicksand.

I've had some bad experiences on the mudflats of getting stuck.

Vehicles, me.

This stuff can be so unforgiving.

Hey, Kyle, you got a copy?

Copy. I'm just about to walk over, like, this mudflat.

Am I going to sink?

Yeah, there's every chance you could sink in it.

The only advice I can give you is walk really slowly because if you transfer

all your weight into one foot, you will sink very quickly and then you're not

getting out of there.

Yeah, okay. Well, it feels all right where I am now. It just looks like it

might get a bit muddy up ahead.

Back in 2020, we ran a wash plant, which was a bit of a disaster.

We ran three trucks.

We had a 30-tonne excavator, a 15-tonne loader. We were making about 10 ounces a

week, but it didn't end well. We had a lot of problems.

After shutting down their mining operation five years ago... All right,

that's pegged in. Which way?

..Darren Bray and Anthony Stein... have swapped the cool comforts of their homes

in Tasmania... Oh, remember, we've got to get this perfectly in line, right?

..to return to the tropics of far north Queensland and stake a new 75-hectare

claim. Final peg in!

They're detecting on foot to map out potential gold hotspots.

The gold's been really patchy this last week.

We really need to find some gold.

It's getting late in the season, so we just want to find some gold and get out

of here.

We set ourselves a goal of 20 ounces this season.

That's going to be really hard to hit just using detectors.

How much further is it?

Mate, I think about 500 metres.

Straight up this hill?

Any sort of significant diggings is pretty good indication there was good

gold around.

And because we got metal detectors and they didn't, anything they leave behind,

the idea is that we pick it up.

In 1860, the discovery of gold in far north Queensland drew thousands of

hopeful prospectors into the remote outback.

Travelling hundreds of kilometres on foot with the dream of striking it rich,

a lucky few succeeded.

But for many, the unforgiving heat and extreme conditions claimed their lives.

Gosh, well, I hope Brad feels better soon. That's quite a serious illness.

After complaining of chest pains and struggling to breathe, Brad McGee

unexpectedly collapsed at his Perth home.

sudden case of pneumonia he sold his ground but it's left him with nowhere to

work and at the moment we're held up with permits so we've got nowhere to

work we need to find something soon otherwise this season's going to slip by

i mean i think we take brad the whole way and bring him in to our team

absolutely yeah so this could be a solution for both of us alex

last season Alex Stead and Melanie Wood invested over $400,000

custom building the beast.

Literally 350k before it's all finished and that's just in parts.

A one-of-a-kind dry blower that extracts gold from pay dirt on their crack and

lease outside Yalgoo. But when permit delays stalled plans to expand into new

They travelled 600 kilometres south to help Brad and his wife Wendy secure a

multi-million dollar deal for the gravel rights at their Devil's Cut lease.

But accepting it meant giving up their access to mine it for gold.

I'll tell you what, because I like the creek line as well. I reckon that's the

obvious place to go. You go left and I'll go right.

At 150 hectares in size, the pair have a search area of nearly 200 football

pitches. So they're zeroing in on a creek line.

they believe could be a continuation of the same gold-bearing system Brad has

mined for the past seven years.

Good-looking ground within maybe a kilometre and a half of Brad's lease, so

no distance at all, really.

And the ground looks, to me, identical.

All we need to do is start finding a little bit of gold before we bring heavy

machinery in.

I could really use Brad's knowledge at the moment because it's like trying to

find a needle in a haystack out here.

And, you know, the price of gold is just through the roof. So every day that

we're not finding any, we're kind of missing out.

And the price could go down at any minute.

Really faint signal there. That might be something.

It's down deep, whatever it is.

Give it a bit of a dig.

Might just be ground noise. There's a bit of moisture in the soil, but...

It's a really good indicator But we're gonna need more than that fifty grand

for this lease is a lot of money

it's absolutely insane out here like another planet we've never worked in an

area like this before there's no shade or shelter around here we've actually

had to sort of get off there are so many flies here and then we've got this

constant wind that's coming in straight off the ocean Jackie and Kyle have spent

$1,000 hiring a jet ski to access one of Kim North's most remote leases.

Our pay is the gold we find. So finding gold here in WA is so important.

Kim's going to get his results regardless.

But Kyle and I are going to be out of pocket for the jet ski and all the time

that we've spent out here if we don't find anything at all.

If they can track down fresh gold deposits...

It could earn them more exploration work across the Pilbara.

I find myself on a mission to explore a mining lease for one of the biggest gold

miners in the Pilbara to find out if it's actually viable for him to kick off

a mining operation here. So the pressure is so, so high.

I've really worded Jackie up to Kim and if we go back with no gold, it's not

going to look real good.

I feel so out of my depth out here. I can see a little bit of exposed bedrock

up here.

I think that's probably my best bet.

I'm just going to have a little look around this bedrock here. It's a good

place for gold to get trapped.

There's all this bad rock here, which has got quartz veins and ironstone all

through it.

I'm going to skip across those mudflats and hopefully not fall into a hole.

I mean, it's pretty noisy ground around here, but definitely sounded like there

With all these tidal currents coming in, anything could have washed in.

I'd say there's at least a gram of gold there with the gold prices today.

But the most important thing is that we've found a location that's actually

carrying gold.

Gold's the best indicator of gold.

Deep in tropical far north Queensland, gold drifters Darren and Anthony have

hiked through steep terrain in 40 degrees Celsius heat to track down an

old-timer's mine on their 75-hectare Titan lease.

Those guys wouldn't have gone to all that trouble, you know, just for a few

nuggets. That would have definitely been a nice big reef. If luck's on our side,

some of that reef would have shed down this hill into the gullies and into the

creeks.

A lot of hard work, a lot of Ks, finding those old workings. But gold ore is fine

to the lowest point. Hopefully I come across something really soon.

While we're waiting for our lease to be approved, we'll keep on looking.

But until the exploration permit holder approves their application to use heavy

machinery, the pair are restricted to just detecting.

Brad has returned to site to help, despite still recovering from severe

pneumonia. It's been a week and a half in the hospital.

If the gold's continuing across from my lease onto this lease, then it might be

worth it. So we need to get as much done as we can and try and prove up the

ground.

I just passed the pink marker back there and I can see one on the tree here. So

this is where our lease ends and this lease starts.

Oh, there's one right there. How close is that to the edge of this lease?

This at one stage could have just washed down from our lease. So that's probably

about just over 600 bucks.

Found a couple over there, you know, one here, one there. So it's pretty sporadic

at the moment.

We're right in the bottom of this valley, right in the water flow.

So hopefully, being in the lowest point, that's where the gold should gather.

We've managed to pick up a few nuggets on the edge where the ground goes

shallow. We get right down, removing millions of years of overburden and

build-up.

My lease is literally five meters that way, so I'm right on the border here.

I reckon it's worth the detect.

I mean, there was gold on the surface, but we're really looking for that gold

down a bit lower, because that's where the good gold's going to be, if it's

going to be anywhere.

This lease here would be ideal because it's right on my border. I can move the

camp straight across and if that gold continues through, I can continue what

I've been doing for the last few years, but if there's no gold here, then

there's no point being here. It's as simple as that.
