Sohyun!

I just followed madam, without knowing anything.

So I was nerve-wrecked.

But now I'm relieved that I get to see you here.

What is it like to be a court nurse?

Did you come here without knowing anything?

Yes. By the way, what's going on?

Is it something bad?

The ambassador from the Myung will arrive here in Seoul.

We will... provide them with bed service.

Pardon me?

Gaegeum, Gaegeum!

Is it true?

It is.

I thought we were here for nothing as only Yejin was called to the court.

What a relief.

Have her take the decoction as noted in the prescription.

Yes, sir.

Sir!

Sir, do you have any idea where Yejin went?

She's going to give bed service to the Myung ambassador.

How could this be?! Yejin only thinks of you...

Sir!

Sir, sir!

Didn't you know?

Yejin has been heartsick for all these years because of you.

But you were totally unaware of her feelings.

Being inattentive of others' feelings is such a bad thing.

Come to think of it, you are really a bad person.

I found out about what's happened from the gossip

among the nurses.

What will you do about it?

During every uphill struggle, while learning medicine,

I only received good things from Yejin.

When I was an herbalist, I learned herbal effects from her.

I learned the basics by reading medical books she gave to me.

Even when I gave up learning, after being deserted by the master,

I was able to start all over again thanks to her.

Now she's in trouble and there's nothing I can do for her.

No matter how I think about it...

There is nothing...

I can do for her.

Be seated.

Prepare new clothes to primp these girls.

Understood.

Madame, I cannot follow this order,

if I have to quit being nurse.

Please send me back.

How rude of you to say that!

It is none of my concern if you continue your job or not.

You have no idea how vital it is to serve the ambassador.

And, know what and when to speak.

Why is it we should go?

Out of all these people, why us?

We are not girls for pleasure. We are court nurses.

We administer medicine at the court and look after patients.

Your tasks are more than that.

Aren't you aware you are also called 'pleasure girls at pharmacy'?

In the past, even daughters of noble families wouldn't marry,

...just to be selected as the court lady.

You are not worthy enough to make such fuss!

If you say such nonsense one more time, I will end you.

Period.

What are you waiting for? Have them get dressed.

Yes, ma'am.

Doctor Hur,

I've never been so extravagant in my life thus far,

I'm dressed up with precious silks and being served

by the court ladies.

How pretty I look reflected in the mirror.

I look so pretty, but I shed my tears.

Maybe because I think I'm treated like the departed.

Receiving all the good things and beautiful shrouds

before passing away.

It all feels like a dream.

Those days when I was able to see you, face-to-face ...

I thought I'd never see you again, after leaving Sanum ...

I'm leaving on the long way again.

For I fear my dream will be broken for no reason.

I sincerely hope you achieve all your aspirations.

What is it?

I have a favor to ask.

Please give this letter to the medical officer, Hur Joon.

Please. Promise me.

I see.

Yejin.

Yejin.

Is she out?

No, she's not.

Yejin.

Yejin.

Yejin?

Yejin?

Yejin, wake up. Yejin. Yejin.

Yejin, Yejin.

Yejin. Open your eyes, Yejin.

What is it?

Come, bring madam and court nurses. Hurry, this instant!

Yejin.

What happened?

What is it?

She committed suicide.

What? Is she dead?

I still can feel her pulse.

What are you doing? Come take a look!

Her body's cold. Give her a massage.

Yes, ma'am.

Is she alive?

Yes, she's fine.

I think we should have her be seen by the doctor until she recovers.

What are you talking about?

Then, everybody would know she tried to disobey the order.

When the higher-ups find out, neither you or I will be safe.

That useless thing!

Ma'am.

I have something to tell you.

What is this?

This is a letter she asked me to deliver.

Sir, the medical officer, Hur Joon is here to see you.

Send him in.

What brings you here?

Sir, there is something I'd like to ask of you.

Take a seat.

Are you okay?

Yes.

How foolish of you!

How is she?

She's fine now.

Then, you all move away.

Do you know how disrespectful your actions are?

I'd rather die.

How dare you. If you can kill yourself, then there is nothing you cannot do.

Now, you mark my words and mark them well.

If you are not discreet with your behavior...

This medical officer will not be safe either.

This is for the sake of His Majesty and the royal court.

If you refuse to obey this order because of your affair...

It is obvious you and he will not be safe.

Understood?

So, should I disclose this relationship?

No, ma'am.

I know it is a lot to ask of you...

But I wonder if you can exert your power on this.

If Ihad known of it earlier, I would've done something.

But it's too late now.

Sir...

Serving the Myung ambassador is

a critical matter for the Court.

We have no idea

what they will ask of us.

It is our best strategy to treat them most cordially...

So as not to offend them.

It is not within my authority to change who will perform the service.

All the eyes of the Court are on this.

Come, follow me.

This is Sanjoin.

Sanjoin/ Herbal medicine to help sleeping

You would know better than I when to use it.

Even committing suicide didn't work.

So it's up to us anyway.

Just take it. We'll probably need it later.

Hop in the carriage.

What are you waiting for?

Madam, madam!

You go back to the nurses' residence.

I was just told that only one person is needed for this task.

Yejin.

What should I do?

Don't mind me.

I have nothing to be afraid of now. I'll go.

Yejin...

What are you waiting for? Let's go.

Be extra careful with every word and action.

Yes, ma'am.

Go right ahead.

I want to be completely alone. Don't let anyone near here.

Stay away.

Sit down.

Are you in pain?

Are you okay, sir?

Get away.

Please use this.

It is herbal medicine called Sanjoin. It's made of fried seeds of wild jujube.

It works for stomach ache.

Why did you bring it?

I asked you why you brought it!

Sir, I am a nurse looking after patients.

A nurse?

Yes, sir.

And, about that medicine?

I'd rather die than obey the order to give you bed service.

What did you say?

I tried to put this in your liquor;

to go against this order.

But I saw you in severe pain,

so I gave this up to you.

Sanjoin helps you to sleep and works for the symptoms...

of stomach ache, diarrhea and cold sweats.

Please trust me.

All I have said is true.

How are you, sir?

I'm fine now.

Trying to disobey your order by giving me sleeping drugs.

How absurd!

Please extend your forgiveness.

Do you know why I trusted you and took your medicine?

No, sir.

Because of your honesty.

There was not a single trace of falsehood in your face.

It was indeed a sleeping drug.

I have to go and rest.

Move away.

What happened? Why are you leaving so early?

He said that I should move away.

Did you do something disrespectful?

No, ma'am.

If things go awry, you will not get away with this!

Sir.

Have you heard the news about Yejin?

What happened?

Yejin went to give the Myung ambassador bed service,

but came out safely by curing his acute pain.

So, did she give him the service?

Would you be in bed with someone when you're in severe pain?

That ambassador commended her work to the Court.

And Sir Dojedo will give her a big award.

Pleased to hear that, indeed!

Yejin!

We're so glad to welcome you back.

Good job.

Madam...

I was so worried that I couldn't sleep a wink last night.

How fortunate it is that things worked out this way!

Doctor Hur.

The Royal Physician is looking for you. Go inside the court.

Did you need me?

His Majesty will go out hunting with his lieges.

You assist him for his safety.

The Gongbin Queen specifically chose you, so make no mistakes.

Yes, sir.

It is such a heavy responsibility to serve His Majesty.

But at the same time, your career will look only promising.

I feel so humble.

While you're at it, forget about those patients.

Take a good look around and take a rest.

I heard you've been stressing out yourself.

Knowing how and when to rest is also a virtue.

Sir! Sir!

Something urgent has come up, sir!

What is it?

His Majesty fell off a horse!

- What? - Oh, my goodness!

Now, let's hurry up!

Majesty!

Your Majesty!

It's not that serious. No need to fuss.

Allow me to take a look.

Were you neglecting your duties?

It is I who made a mistake. Don't be so hard on yourself.

On your favor, Your Majesty.

How is it?

His tendon seemed to be stressed due to the impact from falling.

But his bone seems to be fine.

I'll give His Majesty acupuncture for it. His condition should improve.

Is the treatment done?

Yes, Your Highness.

Escort His Majesty!

Yes, sir!

Good job.

If it were not for you, my post would've disappear today.

Then, I'll be moving along now.

I owe you a big one.

Thank you.

Oh, hold on!

If you're a medical officer, do you know Doctor Kim Mankyung?

Yes, he is at the public hospital.

He and I went to the same school.

Tell him I'll pay a visit soon.

I am Bae Chunsoo, Police Captain at the Police Bureau.

I see.

Let's go.

We caught smugglers at the Odo ferry point.

Stay alert.

Commander said to be alert!

You're the one who held a funeral for the plagued victim.

You look like a descendant of a noble family. Name yourself.

This instant!

Sir, his name is Hur Joon, son of the magistrate in Yongchun.

What did you just say? A son of the magistrate?

Is he the son of Hur Ryune, the magistrate in Yongchun?

It's none of his business. Proceed with your punishment.

Shut up, damn you!

Escort these criminals to the government office in Yongchun.

Yes, sir!

What are you looking at?

Why are you so listless these days?

Not many guests come here lately.

I fear we might have to fold up our business.

Then we'd go broke.

Look how well Gyum's business hums along.

Look at Gyum's face. So fair and clean.

By contrary, our Unnyun looks pale.

Is that what a mother is supposed to say?

You should feed her better!

There is nothing to feed her!

Shut up, you!

Brother Hur!

You're here.

I have something to tell you, Yangtae.

What is it?

I will make it quick.

- Okay. - Don't pick a fight.

Shut up. Just go.

How come he doesn't call you?

He should be calling you, too.

Come to think of it, it's really weird.

Is that true?

It's been almost a decade now.

But if your past as a smuggler is disclosed, you'll be in trouble.

Concealing a criminal, marrying an aristocratic woman.

We violated the law in a big way.

We have to prepare ourselves, in case...

he finds out about us and reveals the whole thing.

Looks like he didn't recognize me. He seemed to have forgotten me.

What if something reminds him suddenly?

Then, your days are over.

And, I thought our time had finally come.

What did we do to deserve this?

Your madams deserve more than this.

I'll leave now.

Did something happen to him? He looks so pale.

He tosses and turns at night. But he doesn't say anything.

Maybe because of the Spring weather?

What's wrong with him?

You finish the day and have a rest.

You don't look well.

No, sir.

Don't be so stubborn and take my advice.

Look here!

What a surprise!

- It's been a while. - Never thought I'd see you here!

When did you come to Seoul?

You're still the same.

Are you on duty today?

No I'm not.

Good! Grab your things and follow me.

The man you just saw said he'll buy us a drink.

He said he has to return a favor.

His name is Bae Chunsoo. We studied together.

What are you doing? Come, hurry.

It should be a time for you two to catch up. I'm fine.

It'd be good for you to get acquainted with him.

Looks like he likes you as well.

Besides, he never fails to return a favor he's received.

You can't say no to him forever. Come on.

The look on the schoolmaster's face is still vivid in my memory.

I was only asked to be good with swords.

He often yelled if you said no to the Seven Chinese Classics.

He did more than that.

He lashed me on the calf until it sprayed blood.

It was brutal even. I still have some scars here and there.

I'm over 30 now, but things are still the same.

I should've held a sword, but now I use acupuncture.

And now, you are using the sword.

Looks like Doctor Hur needs more liquor.

Let me pour you some.

I feel like I've seen you before.

It's hard to bring back those memories.

Hur from Yangchun.

Where is your hometown?

Sanum, Gyungsangdo.

Sanum?

He's achieved a lot coming from the southern region.

He is the most well-known in the royal hospital.

Never again will we see this kind of talent.

He will be the court physician to care for His Majesty.

So acquaint yourself in advance.

Is that so?

Then I should be treating him even better than this!

Sure, we need second, third helpings here!

I'm afraid I have to leave now.

No, it's okay.

I started to worry that I forced you to come here.

You don't look so well.

So go ahead.

He and I will be drinking more pots and getting drunk.

So you can go now.

Thank you. I'll see you later.

He's really something.

- Is he gone? - He really doesn't look well.

No wonder. He doesn't take care of himself, but others.

Was he raised in Sanum?

Why are you interested in him?

Told you, I think I saw him before.

But I've been to Sanum before, so...

There are hundreds of people who look similar. Let's just drink.

Now let's talk about you.

Is it rewarding enough to be the police captain?

Still can't tell what's what in Seoul as I've been in the outskirts all this time.

But, I think I'll be fine.

I believe so. It's already been 10 years now.

I once paid you a visit when you were the commander at Yongchun.

Yeah, you did.

Yongchun?

Sir, his name is Hur Joon, son of the magistrate in Yongchun.

Hur Joon...

Hur Joon?

What is it?

Nothing. Let's have a drink.

What was that?

So follow the prescription that I gave you...

Why do you look so surprised?

You came.

Is Bongsa Kim here?

He is.

I served as the commander at Yongchun in Pyungando about 10 years ago.

At that time, there was a group of smugglers in Yongchun.

Come to think of it, the leader's name was Hur Joon.

It's been way too long and I'm still unsure of this memory.

But I think he looked a lot like you.

I believe you have mistaken me for someone else.

Have I?

Then I'll be going now.

Alright.

It's a relief to know that you're not him.

That Hur Joon in Yongchun not only led the smuggling ring...

but also eloped with the daughter of a noble family.

He's a felon who cannot avoid the death sentence.

So it's good that he's not you.
