It's like a golden stamp on your dream.

- I think it's what every act now comes on the show for.

- I've been a janitor for 23 years.

It's just a dream come true.

- It's our version of a gold medal.

The Golden Buzzer originated from "Got Talent" in Germany.

And I got a phone call saying they've come up

with this idea, which they're giving

people the Golden Buzzer.

I'm like, that's a good idea.

It's quite different the way they did it.

They had to kind of--had to walk away from the desk,

go up to this podium,

and I thought, that sounds a bit complicated.

However, I love the idea.

And over the years, it's become the most important thing,

certainly, through the audition.

It's like, four yeses, and they're like, and?

- That Golden Buzzer is looking pretty good from afar.

- It is, isn't it?

- They all want the Golden Buzzer.

- * Everybody wants to rule the world *

- The Golden Buzzer, it is everything.

One of my favorite moments on the show,

my Golden Buzzer, Grace VanderWaal.

- So Grace VanderWaal is a great example of how somebody

can just walk on this stage and then their career

and their life completely changes because of this show.

- I'm Grace VanderWaal.

I'm 12 years old, and I love to sing.

- What are you looking at? - Nick Cannon.

- Nick Cannon?

- I'm trying to set my expectations very low.

I've never sang in a crowd this big before,

and this is just gonna be so different to be, like,

in front of all these people.

- It was my first year on the show as a judge,

and I wanted it to be amazing.

I remember Grace walking out on stage,

tiny little thing with a ukulele.

[cheers and applause]

- Hi, young lady.

What is your name? - Grace.

- Grace.

You're a beautiful young lady, you know that?

- Thank you.

[laughter]

- How old are you?

- 12.

- Are you excited to be here?

- It's crazy.

- What are you gonna sing?

- I'm singing an original. - Really?

- Yes.

- What's it about?

- It's about me.

- You believe that you can win?

- Well, I mean, miracles can happen,

so possibly.

- That just hit me. That was just--

I just thought it was great.

- If you listen to the lyrics, there's so many of us

that feel exactly the same way.

- I'll never forget that moment.

When you have that level of talent,

how could you give them anything less

than a Golden Buzzer?

Your original, about people not knowing your name,

is so right and so wrong, because I think the world

is gonna know your name.

I think right now they're gonna know your name

because you are going right...

That little tiny girl is now this beautiful, young woman

who is an accomplished fashion model, singer, movie star.

I mean, it's amazing to see where these people go.

- That was an audition I will never, ever forget.

It was just something.

It was almost like the rest of the show

was in black and white, and suddenly

it turned into full color.

Literally, I went, that girl is gonna be a star.

I remember Howie pressing it.

He was so pleased with himself afterwards.

I mean, just, I could see it on his face.

- So you think you've got a star now?

- I 100% think we've got a star.

- Amazing. - Wow.

- Yeah, I really do. - That is a big wow.

- This girl is special.

- She is special. - Wow.

- And I'm now annoyed I didn't press the Golden Buzzer.

- I know. Me too.

- We feel, like, some responsibility and some--

like, a parent, you know what I mean?

This is--now you're my Golden Buzzer, you're my act.

Look at my kid.

And Grace VanderWaal rose to the occasion for me.

- Grace VanderWaal!

[cheers and applause]

- I think they only got up to the word G on Grace.

Howie was on that stage from his seat in about

a millionth of a second.

As soon as he heard, "And the winner is Gra"--

he was there.

It made me laugh.

It was brilliant.

[exciting music]

The Golden Buzzer.

It's our version of the gold medal.

[cheering]

- They did so well that I have to do this.

[cheering]

- I've stepped on it.

I've hid under the table and hit it from behind.

[cheering]

- Season 20 has got to be the best yet.

[cheering]

- Wow.

My favorite acts, my favorite thing, it's dancing.

So the most memorable for me is the Mayyas.

They won "AGT" that season.

They were very happy to be there on "AGT"

being able to perform for us and perform for the world.

They were super excited.

So how is life for you guys in Lebanon right now?

- Unfortunately, being a dancer as a female Arab...

uh, is not fully supported yet.

- They were these beautiful, young Lebanese women.

They had been having a lot of problems

with their performance because it's very difficult

as women in that country.

- Being here, standing on the biggest stage of the world,

is our only chance to prove to the world

what Arab women can do.

[cheers and applause]

- So what are you going to do?

I think I know, but--

- We're gonna try to hypnotize you.

- Oh.

- So for that, I'm gonna ask the judges

to get a bit closer to each other,

to get the best experience.

- Come on over, Howie.

- They were so specific about how

we had to watch the audition.

We couldn't watch it from here and here.

We had to go there.

I had no idea what was going on.

And so we all sat there like this,

and then this thing just unfolded.

[mysterious music playing]

- Wow.

- There was something magical about them.

I saw all the judges.

We couldn't believe what we were seeing.

We were all mesmerized.

We were hypnotized.

- They're eyes. Eyes.

- You can tell, you know, how important this is for them.

This is years and years of choreography,

of learning and preparation.

It's one of the craziest performances I've ever seen.

[cheers and applause]

- Wow.

- There are no words to explain to you

what we were feeling over here.

- Thank you.

- It was the most beautiful, creative dancing

I've ever seen.

From the moment I saw them start dancing,

I knew it was gonna be my Golden Buzzer.

- It was arguably the best dance

that we're likely to have ever seen.

And we are honored to have you here.

Of course, it's amazing for me that this women got,

This is the stuff you dream about happening.

and when we came back home, we got a lot of support

from everyone all around the world,

from artists we look up to.

At that moment, our dreams came true.

- The beauty of the Golden Buzzer is,

it moves you to this epic moment,

and whether you're moved with emotion,

or just awe and laughter and silliness,

like Sofía was for Schumacher.

Well, I love humor,

and Japanese humor is really funny for me.

- Everyone asks me this question,

when is the right time to press the Golden Buzzer?

And often, it's what's going on behind me, the audience.

- Standing ovation.

- That energy, you know, it's like, I don't know,

3,000 people, 4,000 people screaming at you.

Sometimes you just cave in.

I don't know what it is, but I really, really think

that you deserve this.

- That is the epitome of what the Golden Buzzer is.

That was so unique, so funny, so unexpected, and so "wow."

- Why did you make this decision?

- I don't know.

That was the most fun thing we've had all day, all week.

Maybe they were hypnotists.

- I didn't even think about it.

It was just like, that's what the Golden Buzzer is there for.

- We meet people with incredible stories,

and Tyler is an example of that.

I wanted to start playing the violin

because I was being bullied in school.

- Aw.

- A young kid who had to suffer bullying.

He just transformed.

Absolutely amazing.

Do you know what?

You are an extraordinary young man.

And I would like to say something on your behalf

to the bullies.

- It was magic.

And he's super talented.

He's everything a Golden Buzzer should be.

- There's been moments where someone's

walked on with a kind of what I call a glow.

And you think, I really hope this is gonna go well.

There was an artist called Sara James.

Where are you from, Sara?

- I'm from Poland.

- Are you? - Yeah.

[laughs]

- And how old are you, Sara?

- I'm 13. - 13?

- Oh, my God. - What?

- 13.

* Yeah, yeah *

- You know, she was young, nervous,

but you know, again, she had this kind of aura about her.

And I just really liked her.

- * I'll make it out of here *

- And I just had this feeling I was gonna press

the Golden Buzzer for her.

You have a real star glow about you.

- Thank you so much.

- I wanna make this a moment for you to remember forever.

- When you get those surprises and you feel

this kind of audience rush behind you,

you see the look on their face...

- It's so different from just saying yes to someone.

when you get the Golden Buzzer.

They know that they're good, and it almost supercharges

something for them.

it's the best feeling in the world.

That's his second one.

That was the Golden Buzzer that broke the rule.

Simon had already pressed the Golden Buzzer,

and he hits the Golden Buzzer, and changed the game.

- All of us? - We get another one?

From that point on, we each had two Golden Buzzers.

And everybody agreed that this was worthy

of more than anything we had ever seen before.

- Sometimes, you know, you have this feeling

even before they perform.

It just happens.

You literally made all my hairs stand up on end.

I haven't got any explanation apart from, bam.

- You can't describe it.

It's just something where you go, "Oh, my God.

I need to see this again."

Touch that button, and it sends that act and your emotion

and the whole room into the stratosphere.

That's nice.

- How old are you, Victory?

- I'm nine.

- Yeah.

And?

- And what?

- It's just this amazing feeling knowing that

you've got the ability to press it.

Let's hope this goes great for you.

- With a nine-year-old opera singer,

you're blown away by her age,

you're blown away by her control,

you're blown away by the power of this sound.

a bird flies down from the rafters

and lands on the speaker.

It felt like we were in a movie.

And what movie doesn't want the most happy ending you can have?

- We're gonna do something else we've never, ever,

ever done on the show before.

- * I know it's gonna be *

- And that's all of us together

giving her the Group Golden Buzzer.

- Seeing her eyes get big,

her chest winds up there, like...[gasps]

I mean, there's no words that can describe it, really.

- If you get the Golden Buzzer, you have to clean it all up.

The Golden Buzzer is a gift.

It is like the golden egg.

It is like laying the golden egg of talent.

- I have two facts for you.

One, I'm 6 feet tall.

And two, love is the most vulnerable thing

one will ever have.

- Brandon was a real surprise.

He's the only Golden Buzzer in history

where there was no audience.

- March 23, 1997, I've been ground bound because

she left Earth to go back home amongst the stars,

right next to God.

But I was left here to manufacture wings

out of tears and broken dreams.

Yet I'm still haunted by these nightmares 'cause...

- This was when COVID started, so no one was in the audience.

And I thought he was gutsy just to even audition.

He still reacted as if they were, like,

4,000 people in the theater.

- Can't imagine living life without them,

staring at a grave, like--

- I never liked poetry before he came on,

and he completely changed my mind forever.

- And I know I said earlier to hold on to love loosely

so when it leaves, it won't exit so painfully.

But if this pain and these memories

are all that I got left of you,

I won't never regret these scars

from just trying to hold on to you.

- So I pressed the buzzer for an act that has never

been on the stage of "AGT."

We feel your pain.

We feel your love.

And you moved me to do this.

- Ho, ho, ho.

- If you would have told me what the act was gonna be,

I would have thought, I'm probably not even

interested in listening to it.

But I've never been more drawn in.

- You know, there were a lot of people who were like,

a poet winning "AGT"?

It couldn't happen.

And it happened.

Everything you've ever wanted has now come to this moment

and your life has changed forever.

The nation has picked you, Brandon Leake!

- Hopefully every year, you find someone so special,

I was there at their first audition.

And you know, whether you press it yourself or not,

it's still the best feeling in the world.

on a live show.

- Simon was sure that he was gonna give the Golden Buzzer.

the Golden Buzzer first.

- He got there a millisecond before me.

I mean, just-- it was just hilarious.

- Each judge gets an opportunity once a season

to hit the Golden Buzzer, and the act gets to go straight

through to the live shows.

But all of our judges already hit their Golden Buzzer.

But you know what? I don't care.

I'ma break the rules.

- It was the first time there was

a Golden Buzzer from the host.

So you know that's going down in history.

- That would have made her complete life.

- She's 90.

- To give the Golden Buzzer,

it's probably the greatest honor on "AGT."

I meet and get to know the contestants backstage,

so for me, it becomes very personal.

- Hey, Terry. - Hey, what's up, man?

How you doing? - Big fan.

- Dude, I love that jacket. - Thank you so much.

- I'm a big fan of yours. I'm great.

- Great to see you.

- All the way from Zimbabwe.

I used to watch you as a kid, and you made--

I'm here because of you.

- I love this.

We're gonna be talking a little bit later.

'Cause in my village, we drive like--

- A comedian has never won "AGT,"

but Learnmore Jonasi, he comes very, very close.

He was so good.

- I don't think anybody can doubt that his comedy

is gonna be the way for his success

for the rest of his life.

I have never seen someone get a Golden Buzzer

who didn't deserve it.

And another act feels special to me, the Detroit Youth Choir.

- The Detroit Youth Choir is a community-based choir.

We have a lot of inner city kids.

Some of them have bad home situations

or they can be in the streets.

We give them something positive to come and be a part of.

Are you nervous?

- Yes, I'm nervous.

But I'm ready for this.

- Their choir master, Mr. White,

is the most extraordinary person.

- Be proud of what you represent.

Okay? - For sure.

- All right. Give me a hug.

- I think it's actually Terry's favorite ever act.

- Let me tell you, Mr. White, people like you are the reason

I am where I am right now.

And let me tell you, all it takes

is one person to believe that you can do it

and you have that.

And that's more than so many people have on this Earth.

- Now, tell me how this choir came up.

What was the idea behind it, please?

- Well, I've been the director of this wonderful youth group

for a little over 21 years.

- Oh, wow.

- And we're here to let the world know

that we have some wonderful young people

in the city of Detroit.

And--yes.

[cheers and applause]

They all have great grades, and they're all talented.

- Wow. Is he strict?

- Yeah.

[laughter]

- So what would you love or dream of happening

if you do well on this show?

- $1 million, you know, that's--

[laughter]

And oh, my God, just the excitement on that stage.

The energy the kids have.

* And checking who hit me up *

That was--that was just a moment

that I will always remember.

All those kids on that stage reminded me of me.

Wait, wait.

[voice breaking] I have to tell you,

every young man and woman on this stage

represents me and where I came from.

I remember sitting at my window in Flint, Michigan,

dreaming and wanting to make it and wanting to be here.

And they're here, and they did so well

that I have to do this.

[cheering]

Mr. White, all it takes is one person

to believe in a young man or woman

for them to reach their dreams.

And you are that man, sir.

[cheering]

- * You say I'm in love *

* When I can't feel a thing *

- And I knew it was right.

And what I love about this is that they went back to Detroit

and got a million-dollar endowment.

- "America's Got Talent" was one of the best things

that could have ever happened to me and my students.

- It changed all of their lives forever.

- Kodi Lee is one of the most amazing

auditions I've ever witnessed.

He was so interesting.

And I was just praying, praying, praying

that it was gonna work.

- I'm gonna sing a song for you on the piano.

- When Kodi was a baby, we noticed that

he did not squint when we went out in the sunlight.

So we took him to a neuro-ophthalmologist,

and he said, your son is blind.

And me and his dad just...

[sentimental music]

Prayed for a lot of help.

And then we found out that he is autistic too.

That moment was like...

It was kind of like the end.

It felt like--it felt like the end of the world.

Because I didn't know.

You know, I just-- I was scared.

It's so hard to explain from a mother's point of view

because it's so heart-wrenching.

As a family, how do we get him what he wants

in this world now?

Like, how are we gonna help him be happy?

Music always just kind of soothed him, helped him relax.

And when someone donated a piano to us,

Kodi just reached over and he started playing it.

That was when I was like, okay, Kodi,

now I think I know how to help you.

- When I perform in front a lot of people,

it makes me feel happy.

- What's beautiful is that Kodi's mother, she's his power.

Right before we start, and he sits down at the piano,

and she kneels down and whispers something in his ear.

- This is you time, okay?

There's gonna be like 20 film cameras on.

You ready? - Yeah.

- Go. Boom.

- I remember it was a long time we were waiting,

and the room was silent.

And then...

[dramatic piano music]

* I've sung a lot of songs *

* And I've made some bad rhymes *

* I've acted out my life in stages *

* With 10,000 people watching *

It was my first year on the show.

I'm still blown away by the miracle that's Kodi Lee.

It was almost like watching the first time anyone ever flew.

I didn't know this was possible.

- I'm gonna remember this moment for the rest of my life.

- I was so caught up in the act,

I didn't even think about the Golden Buzzer.

We do get quite competitive about that.

It was just a question of who's gonna get there first.

- He won the show.

Kodi is now a worldwide superstar,

performing at the Special Olympics,

writing his own music.

He headlined the Vegas show.

There are a lot of people who would have written Kodi off,

and his mom made sure the world saw how great he was.

- The world actually opened their eyes and saw him.

- We still hear that all the time.

- Oh, my gosh. [laughter]

It was a dream come true.

- You have to be 100% when you press that Golden Buzzer.

Because there's no negotiating.

They're through, and that's it.

My Golden Buzzer, Darci, is incredible.

As soon as she came on stage and she started telling us

a little bit about her, I thought, oh, my God,

this girl is gonna be so special.

- How are you? - I'm great. [laughs]

- Why are you laughing?

Incredibly talented, unique.

- Can I ask you, what made you start doing this two years ago?

- Well, I used to be really shy.

And I asked my mom for a puppet to help me.

And she surprised me with one on my tenth birthday.

And here I am.

- I always love it when you get a story like Darci Lynne.

She's a very shy girl.

She got this puppet when she was ten years old from her mom.

It helped her get over her shyness.

She's self-taught in ventrilo-"colism."

I can still can't say that word to this day.

And that is her passion, that helped her just be

who she's become in life.

- When I was 18 years old, I started this choir,

- So for us, Birmingham has such a rich history.

So for me, I grew up at the historic

16th Street Baptist Church.

And a lot of people may know that church,

because in 1963, a tragic bombing happened there.

and it was very, very emotional.

- We wanted the opportunity to show that Birmingham, Alabama,

has some talented young people,

and we wanna do something great for the community.
