We are one of the Taste of Arden finalists.
I just can't believe it!
Can you imagine, Bas, The Cosy Loaf,
crowned Best Bakery?
I'll bring the judges over tomorrow to see
the place in action and interview you.
I'll be filming it for the socials.
Then, on Friday, there'll be a live cake-off between you
and the other finalist.
We're hoping to get a celebrity presenter.
Oh!
Who we up against?
Bas. I don't suppose you could tell us?
It's Fancy Bread, the new place across the street.
Of course it is.
Anyway, thank you.
Thank you, so much. Thank you, Miss Gordon.
Oh, Lol, please.
I don't really do the formal thing.
Well, listen, here, excuse fingers.
Take one for the road, it's one of my lemon tarts.
You've no idea what this could mean for us.
I think that might be off.
No, no, I am so sorry.
Oh, no, it's fine but I wouldn't serve them to the judges.
I'm sorry boss, I must have messed the recipe up.
No, no, I tasted them, fresh from the oven. They were perfect.
Ah! That's not icing sugar.
Somebody must have switched it.
But who?
And why?
Who do you think?
Nerissa Belmont.
Oh, she'd do anything to win this competition
but she's not going to get away with it.
I know just the man to call.
LAUGHING
Hey, I'm a private investigator, of course I can help.
Yep, I'll see you later.
Who was that?
That was, er, Squinty Pete. Yes, I forgot about a darts practice
over at the Mucky Mallard. I'd better get going.
OK.Oh!
Gotta go, my darts team need me.
Oh, see you tomorrow.
See ya.
I didn't know he played.
He doesn't. He stopped last year.
One of Squinty Pete's darts went wide,
hit an American tourist in the head.
Grab your kit, we're going to do some work
on your surveillance technique.
Yes! Who's the target?
Frank Hathaway.
Look, I know that Frank lied about the darts thing but
maybe he was just hungry?
Yeah, except that bakery is clearly closed, isn't it?
The thing is, I think he's taking jobs without me?
Nah, he wouldn't do that. You're Shakespeare and Hathaway.
We weren't always.
You know, we weren't for a couple of years actually,
- Seb must have told you. - Yeah.
PHONE BUZZES
Oh! It's Cassius.
Are you meant to be meeting up? No, no, he's too busy.
He's got a really special work project on at the moment.
Doing what?
I don't actually know.
We just said that, you know, that we won't talk about work too much.
We're trying to keep things fun.
Have you asked him to be your plus one at your sister's wedding, yet?
I will, you know, when the time is right.
Well, he's been in there for 45 minutes,
he's definitely talking to a client.
Well, spying on him's not going to get you anywhere.
You just need to ask him for the truth.
You're right.
Hang on, I didn't mean this second!
MUSIC: Angel In White by Andrew DeLong & Harry Greene
? My little angel
? My little angel
? My angel in white
? Whoa, whoa-hoa... ?
BELL RINGS. SHRIEKING.
- Frank! - Frank!
I thought you locked the door.
What were you doing barging in?
Sorry, we had no idea you had a girlfriend.
I'm not his girlfriend.
We're just friends.
With benefits.
I have been dying to meet you, Lu.
Sorry... Sorry, you prefer Luella now, don't you?
And you must be Bea?
The Toasty Puff girl, yes.
This is Annie Hotspur.
We met at that dating agency we investigated,
you know, the one with the cloaks.
What? Upon My Soulmates?
That was weeks ago,
why didn't you say anything?
Because it's just a casual...
Largely physical.
...thing.
OK, great.
That's great but I tell you everything about Cassius.
Yeah, whether I want to hear it or not.
No, I heard you on the phone,
and you were definitely talking about a job.
I asked Frank over here for some advice.
Yeah, you see The Cosy Loaf is a finalist in
the Taste of Arden Best Bakery Award.
Oh, congratulations.
Thank you. Thanks, it's a big deal.
Right, the winner gets
loads of free publicity and
a massive boost to their business,
which God knows we need it.
But, Annie thinks she's being sabotaged.
Right.
Here, taste this.
- Huh? - Oh, God!
I found it in the bin.
Denatonium benzoate?
They put it in things like
anti-freeze and soap,
to stop kids and animals eating it.
It's one of the bitterest chemicals.
Yes, I know. I know cos you've just made me taste it.
And I could have served my lemon tarts covered in the stuff
to the judges tomorrow.
So, somebody tampered with your ingredients?
Nerissa Belmont.
She looks like butter wouldn't melt
but she's a two-faced cow.
She's been undercutting us ever since she moved in,
stealing our business, and now, now,
she's making sure that she wins Best Bakery instead of us.
I said I'd take a look,
try and get any proof that Nerissa is behind this.
Well, I'll help too.
- Really? - Yeah.
Yeah. Yeah, cos we're a team, aren't we?
You want Hathaway you get Shakespeare too.
Oh!
I've sent the denatonium benzoate off to a pal of mine at the labs,
see if he can get any prints.
We should get back to The Cosy Loaf
in case our saboteur tries anything else.
I thought I recognised the name Fancy Bread.
Croissarts.
Croissants.
Croissart.
It's a cross between a croissant and a jam tart.
Oh, I mean, I prefer the classics myself.
Nothing beats one of Annie's Iced Fingers. Phwoah!
It's a cake.
Oh. Right, yeah.
I should have guessed there was a woman, shouldn't I?
Cos you've started wearing aftershave again...
...brushing your teeth, trimming your nose hair.
Are you in luuuurrrve?
Look, I told you it's purely casual.
Annie's cool, you know, she likes a pint...
I mean, you know she's like a bloke but with the added bonus of...
Not being a bloke?
Exactly.
I've got that background on Nerissa Belmont.
Nothing stands out.
She went to the girl's school here in Stratford,
and then culinary college in London.
Says she worked in a few bakeries,
then she started Fancy Bread last year.
According to their socials,
Fancy Bread are looking for
an artisanal barista stroke patisserie curator.
Do you fancy keeping an eye on Nerissa? Going undercover?
SHE GASPS Yes!
I got rave reviews for my Mrs Lovett.
You know, from Sweeney Todd?
It's the baker that makes pies out of people.
Oh. Stick to croissarts.
Polly, this CV is impressive.
And your last job was at 'Sweeney's'?
Yeah, it was a pop-up bakery in Shoreditch. Pies to die for.
Oh, yeah, I've heard of it.
And I've heard you're in the running for the Best Bakery Award?
Yeah. I just feel so seen.
Honestly, I've always just wanted to inspire people, you know,
to tell my story through my pastries,
and finally all my hard work is paying off.
Oh, this is Antonio Gratiano,
he handles the logistics like the ordering
and the paperwork and blah, blah, blah.
Antonio.
You know I switched from oat to almond milk.
Oh, I'm so sorry, Nerissa,
I'll make you a fresh one straight away.
And what are you wearing?
So, how about a week's trial, yeah?
But first, I really hate to be that person,
could you change your nail polish?
We just have a certain aesthetic at Fancy Bread.
That's why Antonio's non-customer-facing
and I am.
OK...
It's like having my own personal bodyguard.
He does have a look of the Kevin Costner's about him.
Really?
It's that raw, animal magnetism.
How do you stand being around that day in, day out?
Hmm, it's tricky.
Bas... Bas, er, yeah this is Frank and this is Luella
- and they're investigating the sabotage. - Yeah.
Are you coppers?
No, we're private investigators. Hi, I am Luella.
Hi. Frank.
I'm Bas, erm, Annie's assistant baker.
That's why you've got all this then, yeah.
Yeah, we chucked all that stuff after what happened.
Luckily the supplier's local.
Hi, guys!
The judges have decided to come early, if you're ready?
No, no.
I've not been able to bake anything all morning.
How about I go to Fancy Bread first, buy you an hour or so?
- Yes, yes. Thank you. - Oh, Annie, it'sreally heavy.- Thank you so much.
Thank you.
I love this place.
I had a tough time at school.
Bullies, you know?
Mum would bring me here for cake to cheer me up.
Yeah, cake fixes most things, doesn't it?
PHONE BEEPS
SIGHING:Ah! I'm organising a dinner at Renardo's tomorrow for
the event sponsors.
Hm-mm! Fancy!
Right? It's not exactly my vibe,
but all the schmoozing is part of the job.
- Good luck! - Thank you.
And don't tell anyone I said this, but I hope you win.
Thank you.
Oh, wow! I mean, 'cor blimey!
At the pie-shop it was just me and me rolling pin.
Don't! Only Nerissa is allowed to touch those.
Sorry.
She's quite particular, isn't she?
She's maverick baking.
She just knows what she wants.
She's actually quite sweet.
I lost my old family dog a few months ago.
I'd had Max since he was a puppy.
I was devastated,
and my mum suggested that I hold a funeral for him
and Nerissa sent us a muffin basket.
But she didn't come herself?
I don't know, she's a busy lady, but she was thinking of me.
So how does Nerissa feel about being up against The Cosy Loaf
for Best Bakery Award?
PHONE BEEPS
Ain't that place been around for years?
SCREAMING:Action stations!
The judges are about to arrive.
Vite, vite.
WHIMSICAL MUSIC
My mission at Fancy Bread is to surprise people
with an elevated and thoughtful pastry experience.
I mean, everyone deserves a bit of pretty.
I always use locally sourced ingredients,
and these methods, they were passed down to me from my dad
and from his dad before him.
Might be a bit more expensive and it can be hard work
but the proof is in the pudding, as they say.
I won't be stuck in the past, unlike some people.
I'm willing to push the boundaries of patisserie.
Fancy Bread is all me.
From the creating and the curating of the baked goods,
to the behind-the-scenes logistics.
I mean, I'm selling myself as much as the pastries.
Of course, I couldn't do all this on my own.
I've got the most amazing staff.
Like Bas here, come on Bas, come in.
This guy's my right-hand man.
Say hello, Bas.
PHONE TIMER PINGS Ooh!
That's the smart oven, my croissarts are ready.
I'll just move these, the piece de la resistance.
SMOKE ALARM SHRILLS
Ooh! Something's burning.
What if I make up some of my personalised gift baskets
for you and your families?
They were meant to be lemon tarts.
Thank you so much. Thank you.
Bye.
Au revoir.
Guys, that went so well!
Yay me!
What a disaster!
I've had a look at the oven,
instead of 180, it was actually set to 250.
What?
It was messed with.
How? I mean we've been here watching all morning.
It must have been yesterday
when someone tampered with the icing sugar.
Right, that's it.
Annie.
Oh, can I help?
Don't be ridiculous.
You sabotaged me, didn't you?
Just so you'd win the competition.
Nerissa would never.
You really think I would do something like that?
That is so hurtful.
Oh, put a sock in it, love.
You know that your pastries are just style over substance,
and that is why you resorted to cheating.
Come on Annie, just leave it.
Yes, Annie, listen to your resident Neanderthal.
We all know my bakery's doing better than yours anyway.
What did you just say to me?
It's not your fault, Annie.
Customers' tastes have become a lot more refined.
When you learnt to bake, things were just a little more basic.
No, Annie.
Eat that.
Not the face.
Shouldn't we do something?
No. It's just getting good.
You wouldn't know a decent shortcrust
if it slapped you round the chops.
Well, at least I'm not old.
Oh, no! Now you can do something.
Go, go, go.
Come on be sensible now, Annie. Stop it.
Oh!
Didn't you just pick that up off the floor?
Yeah. Two second rule.
Don't judge me, you're the one who looks like a meringue.
No, you're right.
Oh, actually, it's quite bland.
That's because Nerissa is a terrible baker,
and a terrible human
and now she's gonna win Best Bakery.
Ah, you don't know that boss, we still have the cake-off.
You saw the judges faces when they saw me burnt tarts.
No. Their minds are made up.
I could kill her.
I can't believe I overslept. It's so unlike me,
I'm just so traumatised after Annie's attack.
Antonio must have opened up?
The lights aren't working.
Antonio?
THEY SCREAM
SOBBING
You're here...
...which means...
...they're here.
Move.
WHISPERING:We got your text.
Yeah, what's happened?
I don't know.
The back door was forced,
and our electrical expert has confirmed that
the mixer was tampered with, so, I'm sorry, Miss Belmont, but
this appears to be a murder.
Antonio was electrocuted.
Who'd want to kill Antonio?
You mentioned earlier that Mr Gratiano didn't typically use
the machines?
No, no. I do all the baking. Everybody knows that.
Wait, do you think they were trying to kill me?
It's a possibility we're gonna have to explore.
I'm always the first in to start the machines.
I was only late this morning because...
...because of Annie.
So, I understand you threatened Miss Belmont, publicly,
attacking her with cream and buns?
She deserved it.
Thing is Annie, er, the police think that Nerissa might have been
the intended target, not Antonio.
What?
And you think it was me?
The back door was forced, it could have been anyone.
Do you mind?
I'm actually trying to do my job here.
This is a public place and Annie is my client.
And his lover.
Well, well, well. Aren't you the dark horse?
And, aye, you're right, you know, this is a public place so,
I'll be continuing this conversation back at the station.
Annie Hotspur,
I'm arresting you on suspicion of the murder of Antonio Gratiano.
Keeler's clearly made his mind up that Annie did it.
Yeah, well I hate to defend him,
but we both heard her say she'd kill Nerissa.
Have you never said anything in the heat of the moment?
I just mean, I think you're thinking with your heart,
and maybe other things, rather than your head.
What's that supposed to mean?
It's supposed to mean that you haven't exactly got
the best track record with women, have you?
The last one you fell for, tried to kill you.
That was different.
I know Annie and she didn't do it.
Bea?
SHOUTING:Bea!
I want Polly to go back to Fancy Bread
after the CSI's have left.
Try and find out if that Nerissa had any other enemies.
Course, guv'nor.
Bea?
Be careful.
Bea?
Cos if Annie wasn't the killer...
And she wasn't.
...then they might try again.
PHONE BEEPS
It's my contact.
They've got a match for the fingerprints on
the denatonium benzoate packet.
That was quick.
That's because they were already on the criminal database.
Hi. You look busy.
Until the coppers come to their senses and release Annie,
I'm running this place on my own.
You don't like the police very much, do you, Bas?
I mean, given your history, I get it, you know?
GBH with intent, was it?
You put that bloke in a coma.
It wasn't like that.
I used to be angry and stupid.
I'd get tanked up with my mates and go looking for a fight.
And this one night, one of the lads brought a baseball bat.
I didn't know, I swear.
You were found guilty under joint enterprise?
I got eight years.
But that's where I learnt how to bake,
in the prison kitchens,
and then here with Annie.
It really turned my life around.
They why would you want to ruin it?
It was you, wasn't it, that tampered with the icing sugar?
And we're pretty sure it was you who messed with the oven.
I didn't want to, I swear.
I hadn't told Annie about my past.
Why would she employ a violent ex-con?
Then a few weeks ago Nerissa came across me in town,
I was meeting my parole officer.
So, she blackmailed you into sabotage?
It was the only way I could keep the job that I loved.
So you tried to kill Nerissa to stop her blackmailing you?
No. I would never go back inside, for her.
Thank you.
- But I did see something odd. - Go on.
I was getting that powder from Nerissa,
and I saw that Lol woman skulking around at the back of Fancy Bread.
Lol Gordons? The event organiser?
Thanks, Bas.
Er, what's she doing on here?
I thought we agreed Annie didn't do it.
You agreed.
My money is on either Bas,
he had the motive and the history of violence,
or Lol.
Do you think Lol was just looking for the best way in?
Why would she want to kill Nerissa? I don't know.
Oh, Frank! Look at this.
Lol's posted a photo from her old school days.
She looks different.
That's the local girls' uniform, where Nerissa went.
Didn't Lol mention something about
trouble with bullies.
What if Nerissa was one of them?
Let's find out.
Yeah, she said she was going to go
to that sponsorship meal tonight
at Renardo's.
Shall I see if I can get a table? Why not?
MUTTERING
Polly?
Earth to Polly!
Oh! Yes, that is I.
I am Polly. At your service guv'nor.
You won't believe this,
the cake-off is going ahead tomorrow.
Blimey!
Apparently the police have released Annie.
Oh, they must think that she's innocent.
And what if she's not? Hmm?
Could there be anyone else who might wanna hurt you?
No. Of course not.
Everyone loves me.
CAR HORN BEEPS That's the taxi!
Can you just take these out to them, please?
I need to start planning for the cake-off. That's the address.
It's for Antonio's parents. I thought it might help.
You're sending them muffins?
Yeah.
Isn't that what you did when their dog died?
Yes, but this is a much bigger basket. OK? Tout suite.
LAUGHTER
Why, thank you!
Oh! Annie? They've let you out?
Yeah, well there wasn't enough evidence to charge me.
Although that DS Keeler, you know the one with the funny tash,
he did advise me not to take any trips abroad.
And Frank invited you, did he?
Yeah, thought it'd take her mind off everything, you know.
I'm a bit nervous, to be honest.
it's the live cake-off tomorrow
and apparently they've got a celebrity to host it.
Oh, lovely!
I'm sure you'll be great.
Do you mind if I just talk to Frank? Sorry, it's about work.
You can't bring Annie along,
she's our prime suspect and we're here investigating.
You don't still think she did it, do you?
Look, I'm sorry, Frank, she's the one with the strongest motive.
What about Lol being bullied by Nerissa?
Oh, right, he told you about that, did he?
She's our client.
Yeah, she's also your girlfriend.
You know this is a bit of a conflict of interest, sorry.
EXASPERATED:How many more times? She is not my girlfriend.
I'm really not.
And, talking of conflict of interests,
isn't that your fella Cassius, talking to Lol?
I thought you were working tonight?
I am. Seeking Light are a sponsor of the Taste of Arden Awards.
Oh. You didn't say.
You never asked.
Why are you and Frank here?
They're trying to prove I'm not a murderer.
Well, I am at least.
Hi, I'm Annie...
...and I'm innocent.
The only thing I've ever murdered is Dancing Queen on the karaoke.
Cassius.
Why don't I make my excuses and come and join you?
Oh, no, you don't need to do that, you're busy.
Oh, rubbish! That would be lovely.
Four of us? It'll be like a double date.
Oh! Thank you.
Thank you.
Would you like some butter for your bread, Cassius?
Oh, no thank you.
I'm vegan.
Oh, I'm sorry to hear that.
The menu looks lovely.
Bit pricey.
We're gonna put this on expenses, yeah?
Cassius, would you mind if I went for the sirloin?
Sure.
Only I like my meat rare, so rare in fact,
that a good Vet would get it mooing again.
The miso root vegetables sound nice.
- Really? - Really?- Really?
You'll love them, Luella... Oh! ...trust me.
30 quid for a plate of carrots?!
Never mind murder, this place should be investigated
for daylight robbery.
So, how come you didn't know that your fella's company
was sponsoring the Awards?
Well, Luella and I agreed not to discuss each other's work.
Yeah, because my work can often be confidential,
and Cassius' can be quite...
Boring?
...technical.
Well, me and Frank aren't even together together,
but he talks to me about all his cases.
Even when he's not meant to.
Luella, why are you so determined to think the worst of me?
Are you jealous?
What? Don't be ridiculous!
No, I'm not.
Lol is on the move, we should go.
Sorry.
So you were at school with Nerissa?
Yes. And you're right, she bullied me.
She bullied everyone that wasn't part of her Pretty Squad.
Did you confront her?
There was no point. She didn't even realise who I was.
I know I've changed,
but she made my life hell every day for five years.
I can imagine why you'd want her to disappear.
You think I tried to kill her?
Well, you were seen at the back of Fancy Bread,
where the intruder got in.
Er, that's not what you think.
I was filming.
I've been getting footage of the finalists for the socials.
But I've also been capturing the real Nerissa Belmont,
her snide remarks, her rudeness to the staff.
She's still bullying people and getting away with it.
I wanted everyone to see what she was really like.
You know she didn't start Fancy Bread on her own.
She pretends it's all down to her hard work,
but she's got some rich silent partner bankrolling her.
She's a complete fraud.
I better get back to the sponsors.
I'll send you my footage, you'll see that's all I was doing.
So Nerissa has a business partner?
You can make an exquisite Red Velvet Cake
with extra virgin olive oil, that's organic, and coconut.
Yes, but cake without butter or eggs is not really cake, is it?
Thanks.
Well, I must say you might be a vegan,
but you are a gentleman.
So, am I in the clear then?
We're working on it.
Do you know Lol Gordons well?
Oh, so, you're interested in my work now it's relevant to your case? Hmm?
I thought we agreed we weren't gonna talk about work.
- No, you decided that. - Did I?Mm-hm.
Look, I really like you, Luella,
and I want to share my life with you,
and I'd hoped you wanted the same,
but the more our relationship develops,
the more I actually feel you're pushing me away.
Oh.
I should probably head back to the sponsors' table.
No. Oh, Cassius, no I...
I don't mean you to...
At least we won't have to spend 30 quid on a plate of carrots.
NERISSA:Oh, Cassius...
What are you doing?
...I think I just needed a minute. Antonio was like family to me.
I really want to do him proud.
You're a major sponsor, aren't you?
Eh, eh... Jealousy will get you nowhere.
Do you think, maybe, you could talk to the judges,
and explain my situation?
I appreciate you've been under a lot of stress Miss Belmont,
but so has your competitor.
The police think she did it.
Annie Hotspur is innocent until proven guilty.
At last, me and the vegan agree on something.
Now I have to get back to the office,
but I wish both of you the best of luck.
What are you doing?
- Oh! - What are you doing?
Are you hoping they're gonna make some donuts?
No, Miss Belmont requested a police presence
and given the probable attempt on her life
and the fact this event is so public,
the top brass wanted me.
I'm sure she'll feel much safer.
Yeah, I'm sure she does. And listen,
I am sorry about your new girlfriend.
Oh, she's not his girlfriend.
No, we're just pals... I don't care. Just, stay out of my way.
SIGHING: I don't think I can do this,
everyone probably thinks I'm a murderer.
You're innocent until proven guilty, remember.
And erm, I'm sorry, by the way,
if I've been a bit off with you. I think you were right,
I think I've been a bit jealous.
Jealous?
No, not like that. No.
Suddenly I had to share you,
and I think I wasn't very good at it, so...
Honestly, whatever this is between the two of you,
you make Frank very happy
and that makes me happy.
You've also made him start wearing aftershave which has made my working
environment much more enjoyable.
Oy!
Well, I guess what I'm trying to say is that,
providing you aren't a killer, I approve.
Thanks, Luella.
I don't need your permission, you're not me mam.
Yeah, no, sorry.
What do you mean there's no signal? I need to pair my devices.
We didn't plan on bakers needing 5G.
This is literally a nightmare.
If the killer does try again, do you really have to stop them?
Attention everyone, I've just heard that the judges,
and our special guest presenter, have arrived.
Ladies and gentlemen...
Good luck!
...Steph McGovern.
APPLAUSE
Now the judges have visited The Cosy Loaf...
APPLAUSE AND CHEERS
...and Fancy Bread
and now it's up to their head bakers to wow the judges
with their skills and show us, once and for all,
why their establishment should win this prestigious award.
Are you ready?
Your time starts now. Good luck.
How's it going?
They're gonna get the cakes out any minute.
I've got the name of Nerissa's business partner.
Arragon Max?
Sounds like a posh one.
Or maybe a Transformer. EPIC VOICE:Arragon Max.
Yeah, there's no contact details.
We need to find out more about him.
Actually, Antonio lived on Arragon Close,
I saw his parent's address earlier,
and he told me that his childhood dog's name was Max.
Antonio.....is the business partner.
He'd literally used his street name and his first pet's name.
Great work, Bea.
So, Antonio owned half of Fancy Bread?
Nerissa still treated him like a skivvy.
I don't know why he stood for it.
Maybe he didn't.
We're assuming that Antonio was murdered by mistake...
...but what if he was the killer.
What are you saying?
He set up the mixer to kill Nerissa, and ended up killing himself?
Antonio was so sweet, he wouldn't hurt a fly.
But with Nerissa dead he would own the whole company.
Ooh, pineapple upside down cake. Yes!
I love this bit, flips over,
looks completely different from the other side.
APPLAUSE
What if we're talking about the business but...
...we're looking at it from the wrong side?
Let's put our hand together for the bakers.
APPLAUSE
Fantastic! Well done. They look great.
Excellent work. Thank you, bakers.
APPLAUSE
Judges, it's now over to you.
If you want to make your way up and have a good look at them.
Very interesting.
I tell you what though, the glaze on that pineapple one looks cracking.
Well, thank you very much, Steph, that's very kind of you. Thank you.
Oh, were you expecting mine to go wrong again?
Or perhaps you thought that Bas might have
swapped my ingredients again?
I don't know what you're talking about.
I know you blackmailed him to sabotage me.
He's confessed everything because he's a good person...
...unlike you.
How dare you! I'm no cheat.
No, but you are a killer.
Would you like to go and talk about this somewhere a bit more quiet?
Or would you rather talk in front of the judges and everyone else?
Polly, this is a private conversation.
Oh, my name's actually Bea, I'm their assistant.
You lied to me?
We know that Antonio was your business partner,
we talked to his parents.
He'd received a large inheritance from his Great Granny,
that he used to bankroll Fancy Bread.
It must have been hard for Antonio,
knowing the bakery only existed because of him,
and yet being treated like a lowly member of staff.
Antonio didn't like the limelight,
he was happy for me to take the lead.
Except the day before he died,
he told his parents he was pulling out of the business.
Is that why you decided to kill him?
This is ridiculous.
I was the target
and I have a competition to win.
I see you've been using fancy baking appliances.
Are they the type that connect via Bluetooth, with your phone?
Oh, sorry, is using modern technology a crime now, too?
Course not. Very, very clever.
Did you know they log every time
a user's phone is present, even if they're not operating them.
Yeah, so we asked DS Keeler to get his police expert
to check the user logs from the smart mixer,
the one that was used to kill Antonio.
And we think they'll show
the mixer's Bluetooth was connected with your phone,
just before Antonio was killed.
Which would place you at the scene of the crime.
Oh, please, yes, he gave me some money,
but he was exhausting.
Constantly following me around like a lost puppy,
just desperate for praise.
He came to me after my fight with Annie.
I'm sorry, I...
Why didn't you step up and defend me?
Annie's right, isn't she?
You did try and sabotage The Cosy Loaf.
Well, we can't let her win Best Bakery, can we?
But it's wrong.
You see, this is why I run the company, and not you.
Not only do I have the face for it, I also have the backbone.
I'm sorry Nerissa you've gone too far.
I can't be a part of something like this.
This is our dream.
And sometimes I just have to make tough decisions
but I was just doing it to protect you.
Stop patronising me. It's all lies.
You never really cared, you just wanted my money.
No, no, no. I...
No, we're done. I can't work with you anymore.
What about the competition? I...I need you.
I'll help with the cake-off,
but after that I am pulling my money out of Fancy Bread.
I couldn't let him ruin everything.
We were about to win the Best Bakery Award.
So you thought you could kill two birds with one stone, literally.
Kill Antonio and then blame Annie.
You rigged the mixer
and when Antonio arrived you asked him to turn it on.
And then when it was done you slipped out the back,
fixed the door so it looked like an intruder.
Then you waited for me to arrive and pretended you'd just got there.
Right.
Our expert has confirmed your phone was detected by the mixer at
the time of the murder.
So I'm going to have to arrest you for...
SHRIEKING
No! No! Stay back!
It's over Nerissa.
You killed Antonio?
Don't come any closer.
I had no choice. I couldn't let him destroy Fancy Bread.
I'm trying to elevate the art of baking here.
SHOUTING: Elevate this.
Crime. Is it really worth the WHISK?
That's very...
No please, please, at least let me see who won? Please, please.
It's good I'm in the clear but I guess this means
the competition is cancelled.
Actually...
Ladies and gentlemen thank you so much for your patience.
I'll be honest, though,
I've not seen a judging process like it.
But, good news,
because before all this carry-on
the judges had decided on the winner.
So we're gonna go ahead with the announcement.
The judges praised the dedication to the craft shown
by one of the bakeries.
Their Head Baker's cake not only tasted outstanding,
it was also really good at catching criminals.
So the winner of Taste of Arden Best Bakery award goes to
The Cosy Loaf.
APPLAUSE AND CHEERS
Thank you. Thank you very much.
Thank you, thank you.
Oh, I'm dead chuffed.
Listen this isn't just for me, Bas this is for you.
Get up here, come on.
Ah, I'm dead chuffed.
Business is booming,
me and Bas can hardly keep up.
We don't know if it's the award or
the fact Annie went viral catching a killer with her cake.
It wasn't the video I was planning on releasing,
but everyone knows the truth about Nerissa now.
- Hi. - Hi!
I got your message, you want to talk?
Yes, um, I wanted to say I'm sorry.
I'm sorry.
You're such a good man and I do want you to be part of my life.
I just, I think I got scared, but I'm not anymore,
and, um, now I know what I want, and it's you.
So I wanted to ask you a question, it's about a wedding,
not ours, obviously, well maybe ours, one day, who knows? Um...
...would you like to come to my sister's wedding with me?
I'd be honoured.
Oh!
He said yes.
To The Cosy Loaf.
And to new relationships.
Yeah, to friends with bene...
To really good friends.
