a while back I did a video it was a time
lapse of creating a picture frame and
I've been asked if I would do that again
uh rather slowly for relative beginners
in blender so that's what I'm going to
do now there are a few different ways of
creating a picture frame so this is just
going to be one of them so here I am in
blender and I've got my screencast keys
on down here so you can see what keys
I'm pressing and I am in an old version
of blender so some of the buttons that I
press may be in different locations but
you should be able to figure it out so I
want to delete everything in this scene
so I'm going to press a to select
everything press X and just choose
delete so I have nothing there all right
I'm going to press one and that's going
to bring me into front view orthographic
that means I'm looking straight on and
I'm going to need the profile or sort of
the overall sort of outside shape of a
picture frame so you can search on the
internet you can type in something like
uh picture frame
profile and you can find these things
I'm going to bring one in and use it uh
to trace against so I'll go shift a and
I'm going to come down to image
reference and I'm going to find that
reference if I can so I've just brought
it in and that's the one that I'm going
to use and I can link you to this uh as
well so you could use this the same one
all right now I want to turn my move
tool on on so it's easier I'm going to
press the middle Mouse button and just
turn it and I just want to pull it back
on the Y because this is my 3D cursor
here so when I bring in an object to
start working it's going to come in here
rather than right on top of this the
other thing I can do with this image is
I could come over here to where it sort
of looks like a mountain in the Sun or
whatever the object data properties and
where it says opacity now it may be
different in your in a newer version of
blender but I'm going to click here and
I'm just going to pull this down so that
this is a little bit less shiny press
one to look from front view and now
we're going to choose which one of these
we want to create and I think I'm going
to use this one which may be the one I
used in the last uh video all right so
what I want to do is I want to move this
image so that it's right at my 3D cursor
it's just easier that way so with the
reference image selected I'm going to
press G and I can just pull it up and
I'm going to pull it to about this
bottom left corner I'm going to zoom in
with my mouse wheel and I can press G
and I can move it again and it's not
critical that it you right on because
you can do any shape you want so what
we're going to do is we're going to
trace the shape of this laying down
points and we're going to get the
profile and I'm going to start with a
plane so I'm going to go shift a mesh
plane and I'm going to go into edit mode
and you can sort of see it there it's
laying on its side that's fine I'm just
going to turn it like this I'm going to
merge all these points in into one so
I'm going to press M merge at Center so
now it's one point right there and I'm
still in edit mode I'm pointing up here
I am in vertex selection mode this is
Edge selection and face selection I'm in
vertex selection mode I'm going to press
one to look from the front and I am
ready to go in edit mode so I'm going to
press e to extrude and I'm going to pull
up with the Zed Arrow there up in the
Zed Direction so you might be able to
see here I'll select it all in in Orange
there's a line there now okay select
this vertex here just just that one
there grab that one and now we're going
to have to make this curve so I'm going
to use multiple points so I'm going to
press
e and G and pull it along or just e and
pull e and pull with your mouse and I'm
just going to do a number of points to
sort of simulate this curve and it
doesn't have to be perfect we're going
to put on smoothing Auto smooth in a
moment I'm going to come up to there
because then it goes straight after that
so I'm going to press e and pull up to
there then I'm going to press e and pull
in that red arrow in the X direction to
about there and now we're going to do
this so I'm going to press e and just
pull with my mouse e and just sort of
spread them out I mean if you can get
them kind of even that's nice but it's
not the end of the world and I may not
be doing such a great job of that anyhow
so I'm just coming around here like this
and I seems to be be a little bit on the
inside and if you want to change one
select it and press
G select it press G select press G
select press G just come back here and
then e to extrude and continue and again
don't worry if it doesn't follow it
perfectly this is our profile and this
doesn't have to necessarily be level
with this all right I'm going to press e
to extrude and come out straight so as
you can see I'm sort of on the bottom of
the block line instead of in the middle
it's not a big deal all right so now
we're going to do this part e and pull e
and pull e and pull e and pull e and
pull e and pull let's go one more e and
pull down to there all right straight
lines e pull the in the X Direction e
push
down e over to the left one more e and
down to here all right now to make sure
this line is straight we can just select
that point and that point and we can
scale it in the Zed Direction I mean
think of this as a you know you're in
high school and you wanted a zero on
this axis so let's go
sz0 and now this line is straight and we
have this at this point we really don't
need the reference anymore and just to
make it clear let's get rid of that this
is our profile all right so what I'm
going to do now
is looking from the front I'm going to
go into edit mode a to select everything
and I'm in vertex mode it doesn't really
matter what you're in face selection
it's not going to work there's no face
on there so just come back to there and
I'm going to look in the top view go
into edit mode and I'm going to press e
to extrude and pull it out and just give
myself a little length of this stuff so
we can start to see what's going on all
right now this this is going to be the
inside and this is going to be the
outside so the picture would go in here
I'm looking from the top so I'm going to
take this and I'm going to go into edit
mode now if you think that's too thick
you can just s to scale it down do it in
edit mode scaled it down quite a bit
press G and I'm going to move it move it
somewhere around here this is the center
all right right there so think of this
as the center of your picture so you can
even move it down there if you want
doesn't really matter where you place it
exactly but I'm going to make this
bigger so we could take this we can
scale it into y now all right so we have
this now we'll make it look better in a
minute what we now need to do is create
the whole part of the frame this is just
the profile of of you know of the left
side all right so I'm looking down from
the top and I'm starting to think maybe
it's better to look from the front which
is one so I'm going to come into edit
mode and I'm going to rotate this in the
X so that it's facing us I'm going to go
RX -
90 let's go back into solid
View and now it's facing us and I think
that makes makes a bit more sense it's
actually backwards so I'm going to take
the whole thing actually and rotate at
180° rotate x
180 now it's actually facing us all
right in order to make the pieces fit
together we're going to have to bend
this down and we're going to have to
bend this up to create those sort of 45°
angles for this to slot together so the
way we're going to do this is making
sure we know this is the inside of our
picture frame and that's the outside
we're going to come in here and edit
mode I'm going to select this point
which is on the outside at the very
bottom of the profile I'm going to
select that point and I'm going to shift
as cursor to select it that brings my 3D
cursor there let's look at it it's no
longer in the middle it's there and
we're going to use that as a pivot point
to bend this in a second I want to set
it as a pivot point so I'm going to come
up here and click on there and choose 3D
cursor so my 3D cursor is there and my
Gizmo is there you know with the arrows
I'm going to come into edit mode and I'm
going to select all these vertices and
the easiest way is to do that in
wireframe and then just box select them
my Pivot is still right there all
right now what I want to do is create
the angle so selected the bottom point
there brought my 3D cursor there
switched over to 3D cursor here on on
this side here and if it's not showing
just press T I'm going to scroll down
until I get this what looks like a chalk
brush this is the shear tool I'm going
to click that and that's going to change
this to have these colored uh rectangles
I'm going to pull down on this one Watch
What Happens as I pull it it sort of
stays fixed at the where the 3D cursor
is so I'm going to pull and then let go
and as soon as I do that this dialogue
box down here is available so I'm going
to click on it and the offset the number
I want to choose in here this is a
positive number you see it's
797 I want to make it actually one and
it'll go down a little bit further we're
going to have a negative one in a moment
so I'll show you that now at that point
we're done what we need to do so I'm
going to click back here just brings me
back to the normal situation now we're
going to do a similar thing down in the
bottom so I'm going to go back in solid
view I'm going to choose the outside
Point here so not the inside of the
frame where the picture is the outside
one I've selected it shift s cursor to
selected I'm still in this mode of 3D
cursor so let's look from the front so
my 3D cursor is down there this is now
going to act as a pivot I'm going to go
go with a wireframe make sure nothing is
selected box select these and now I'm
going to angle these ones upwards and
they're going to and it's going to
rotate or Shear from that point so
choose the shear tool again and just
find the rectangle that looks like it's
in the direction you want I want to pull
upwards do this and even if you go too
far it doesn't matter because this will
pop up this one is going to be negative
1 it's always going to be one either
positive one or negative 1 so just type
over this
1 come here and turn that off and let's
turn this back to median Point that's
the default now let's have a look at
this in
solid we've got this great cut just like
that so now we can build our frame we
have all the pieces that we really need
so I'm going to take this I'm going to
go into edit mode and I'm going to
duplicate it by pressing shift d and I'm
going to press G to grab or go I'm just
going to move it over there
now I want to rotate this straight or
horizontal the Y AIS is the one that's
pointing away from us so I'm going to go
R
y90 and we have it like that I'm going
to be bringing this over and joining it
but I need to make sure it fits
perfectly or very very close so I'm
going to use snapping up here where you
see the Horseshoe I'm going to click
here and choose vertex cuz I'm in vertex
mode it's easier to do that so we're
going to snap to a vertex I'm going to
leave this turned off and use hold the
control key to turn it on when I want to
so I'm going to press G and start to
move it over I'm going to hold control
and I'm going to use my mouse and sort
of hover over this last point so you can
snap to many different things and if it
doesn't work just try again snap to
there now let's see how well that
worked looks like it worked let's go
back into object mode pretty good I'm
going to select the whole thing we'll go
into edit mode and we need to merge by
distance press M merge by distance check
it out down here we got rid of some
vertices so it's snugly put
together all right well with that done
we're just going to repeat I'm going to
go into edit mode shift e to duplicate
pull it away so we need to rotate it
around so I'm in the Y AIS r y 180 I
think yeah so okay that looks good so
we're going to slide it in and to get it
to merge
perfectly all right I'm going to I have
SN to vertex I'm going to press G to
move it and hold down control and just
hover over this last vertex and then
click and let go and then double check
that it's in on that side that it looks
in on that side but we need to merge the
vertices so select everything by
pressing a m merge by disc and again we
got rid of some so we've actually
created our frame we can add let's try
adding let's do shade smooth and it gets
a little soft we can try adding a
bevel and even one is enough and I
wouldn't worry about this crease I'll
probably increase this actually it kind
of looks like it should I'm going to
increase this I might even go to three
and I might take this down to
0.02 we'll try that and see how it looks
I'm going to turn on the cavity Shader
and I'm going to come to a matte cap
that's a little bit like wood you may
not have that one let's double check
that our Poes are facing the right way
and they're blue and so they are now
that's a very square picture let's say
you wanted a different shape you wanted
a more rectangular one you could come
into edit mode deselect everything Zed
for wireframe B for border box select or
border select select all of that just
these vertices here and then just pull
them and you get a different shape of a
frame okay now I would like to Center
this up so I could put a picture in
there so what I'm going to do is I'm
going to move my 3D cursor right back to
the middle by pressing shift C it's
right back in the middle I'd also like
my picture frame to be right in the
middle and I can easily do that by
selecting it and going object set the
origin to the 3D cursor and then set the
geometry to the origin the geometry of
my picture frame to the origin which is
at the 3D cursor there everything is
centered out really nicely now so if I
want to put a picture in here I'm going
to have to put it on something just like
a real picture is on like a piece of
photographic paper right so I'm going to
bring in a plane shift a mesh plane go
into edit mode rotate X90 so it's facing
us
just press s to scale it a little bit
bigger I'm going to move it behind this
in just a minute but let's get it wider
SX and get it to about there all right
and now I'm going to take it and I'm
just going to use the the Green Arrow
and slide it back to a position that I
like maybe there the only question is is
it facing us or facing away so we'll
come here okay it's facing us perfect so
we have our picture frame and you'll
notice that we don't have a back to the
picture frame here if I was to come in
here and shift alt and click the outer
edge right there and shift alt and click
the inner Edge this was the profile that
was part of the profile and it went up
around curved around came up to there if
I went control e Bridge Edge Loops I
could get that back part if for some
reason I needed it but if I was putting
this against the wall or on a desk or a
end table where I wouldn't see it I
wouldn't bother with that so there's our
picture frame and don't forget you can
turn these off if you want to look at
that you can turn on Shadow if that's
going to help you can change the look
under here where it says type change
that from screen to both and then
experiment by P with pulling these
up and you get a slightly different
different look now in order to put
materials on this because of all of the
bevels and weird shapes in this this
would be a little tricky to unwrap
nicely uh if you if you wanted to put
say wood texture it has Grain on it you
would need to UV unwrap that and I don't
want to get into that in this video
instead what we could do is we could
select the frame come into shading and
you can see that it's turned white we're
in the material preview make sure I'm
selected on the frame I'm going to click
new and maybe I'll just type frame and
you can then just do simple things with
this material now you can go check out
some of Ryan King's uh procedural
textures and you could get a metal you
may even be able to get a procedural
wood that works good on that but image
maps of wood you would have to really
you know fool around with trying to get
the grain the right way and so what I'm
going to suggest we do here is simp
simply uh lower the color decrease the
roughness maybe and maybe we'll do a
metal uh picture frame we slide that up
you have a nice clean metal frame you
can put noise on this you can do
roughness variations and all kinds of
things in blender and again Ryan King uh
is is great for that so if you want to
just do a procedural texture and then
you don't have to worry about UV un
wrapping it and doing it anything
complicated I think that looks really
great especially if you're just starting
out in blender there's nothing wrong
with doing that but let's get a picture
in there now let's select our plane
click new and let's call this
picture and then with the principal PS
bsdf selected go contrl t now you have
to have the node Wrangler enabled so you
just come over to file preferences and
in your add-ons just search for node and
see I've got it activated there's a
little check mark if you don't activate
it so that you can press contrl T press
G now just to move those up and out of
the way and if you press contrl T you
will get these three nodes coming up the
texture coordinate the mapping node and
the image texture and by default you
will be you will have these little lines
coming out of UV on here which means we
need to UV unwrap This Plane which is
actually very very simple all we got to
do is is go into edit mode press U and
we could do project from view we could
just try unwrap let's just try that now
if you want to see what that looked like
let's go to UV editing and this is the
the UV uh Island that it created from
this and that pretty much approximates
the shape of that anyhow so we're we're
in good shape so let's just leave it
like that so let's get a picture in here
now so the way we do that is we come
over to the image texture node click
open and then find a picture that you
like here's an old picture of me with an
old
RX8 all right we got a picture in there
but it looks all funny doesn't it so
we're going to go you can play around
with rotating stuff here but I find it
easier let's go to UV editing and let's
scroll I'm just rolling my mouse button
to change to move this menu I want to
click on the material preview or the
view part shading so we can see it while
we do stuff so there I am I'm upside
down so but the the picture looks all
right but what we could do is we could
take this UV Island we could just rotate
it so let's try rotate 180
degrees and it's right side up now but
it's still too but it's not the right
size so let's go let's this is this is
the y direction up and down and this is
the X let's go gy and just pull it up
maybe that's all I need or maybe what I
could do is I could press s to scale and
we'll scale it out but it'll start to
repeat so um you know we have to be
careful about this about these things
this is not a a square uh image or UV
and so we're just going to do the best
we can by going gy and going hey that's
the picture that we want right there
without getting into other things that
we could do all right so that doesn't
look too bad again it's going to depend
on the quality of your photograph and
then of course you can do all kinds of
crazy things with your you know with the
actual image I just changed the
roughness of that you can add noise and
stuff like that but the one other thing
that I think I would maybe do is let
move those aside we can make this we can
brighten it up if we want to uh but I'm
going to press control space bar that
maximizes this window so here's my image
you don't have to play with any of these
really leave it on srgb if I take this
this color and I drop it into the
emission on the principal bstf that's go
back let it load up uh sometimes this is
useful sometimes it isn't change the
emission strength I'll just type three
just so you can see so you can see I can
lighten up my image we're just viewing
this with the default these are the
hdris okay so you can try different ones
to see how your how your picture
looks all right so that's one way that
you can create a picture just hang that
on the wall if you're uh if you're you
know whatever scene you're creating or
if that's that's what you want to create
uh on its own then that's great all
right so thanks for watching hope that
helps see you next time
