Isamaya. She's literally my favourite make-up artist.

You can't get any bolder, fashion-wise,

than HARRI. Like, that's insane.

Wow! What an icon!

Creative director for today's runway, HARRI,

is known for his show-stopping silhouettes.

And first came to fame

when he created Sam Smith's look

for the 2023 Brit Awards.

My work is very sculptural.

It has an inherent texture to it

that's very loud.

There needs to be good synergy

between the make-up and the clothing,

and it's really important to bring

the life out of the sculpture.

Collaborating with HARRI for the very first time, make-up visionary

Isamaya Ffrench is famed for her innovative, high-concept looks.

The job of a key MUA at a show is to work with the designer

to create a make-up look that I can then present to my team,

and they can go away and replicate.

It's going to be really important for the make-up artists to do

an excellent job, to really translate the designer's

vision at the highest level

for the show this afternoon.

Hello, welcome, everyone.

Really nice to see you all.

So the theme for the show is sculptural Gothic...

Oh! Did someone say Goth?

I'm really looking for something that's dark, edgy,,

that highlights the sculptural nature of the clothing.

I am so excited about the brief.

I definitely think there's added pressure on me.

I feel like if I mess this up, I can't be a Goth any more.

This is HARRI's show,

so we have to kill it as a team.

If any of you are falling behind or I don't feel like the make-up

look is up to scratch for the show, I will step in and take over,

but I don't want you to rely on me.

Whoever impresses me the most today will join me in the line-up,

and I'll ask you to grab your kit and do the final touches with me.

Guys, I've done my fair share of catwalk shows.

To be asked to go to the line-up, with the key artist,

I've now got goose bumps, this is major.

Honestly, wow, to have the first

assignment be for a runway show,

which is very much what I want to do, I'm just so excited.

I'm telling you, I'm gunning for this today.

Before the MUAs get started, Isamaya gives them

a rundown of what's needed.

So I'm going to demo you the show look today.

I want it to be really high-level. It has to be elevated, precise.

The look today is very complicated.

It's a dark Gothic sculptural look, with lots of different elements.

It's really important it dries, and it goes really tacky.

They're going to have to really watch how I apply the make-up

and go away and do exactly the same.

The three key elements of the look are a twist on a blocked brow,

created using prosthetics...

If you put this down when it's still wet, it won't set properly.

Line it up, push it out, so that it kind of sits really nicely and flat.

..a statement dark eye, with layered under lash.

Don't put this lash all the way to the very edge of the eye. OK.

..and an overdrawn, Gothic, grey lip.

I just want a nice cold colour.

I'm going to mix a bit of black

and a bit of this grey in.

So that's the look, and good luck.

The word prosthetic initially triggered me a little bit.

I had to stop the inner spiralling.

But I feel like it's a great opportunity for me

to just kind of be thrown straight in to the deep end

and really get into competition mode.

walking in HARRI's prestigious runway show.

Where are you from?

I'm from Birmingham.

Have you heard of it? Yeah.

As a first assignment, this is a really big deal for our MUAs.

They're being thrown in at the deep end,

straight in to a leading catwalk show.

First one, and it's for a show,

so it's not just going to be

judged by the judges, there's going

to be a whole crowd of people.

They've got 90 minutes to pull off

a very technical, detailed make-up.

It's going to be tough.

I'm so used to doing my super-creative looks in my own time,

taking as much time as I want.

But, yeah, I'm going to try and manage it wisely.

Try not to talk too much!

I feel confident.

I've done a fashion show before, and I have a degree in prosthetics.

I do really want to be part of the line-up.

It's a very big thing to stand right next to the main make-up artist.

Runway make-up is really high pressure.

You're pulled in every direction,

there are 100 last-minute changes.

I might need to get them in their outfit, five minutes,

if that's OK? Yeah.

Their models will be going through hair, styling.

I've worked like this a couple times backstage,

doing, like, different fashion shows.

But, yeah, I wasn't expecting three...three people doing hair,

which is quite exciting.

There's a lot going on for these guys today,

and I just hope that they keep their cool.

This is the biggest thing I've ever done,

so, yeah, the pressure's on, and I'm very nervous.

I'm just an anxious person all...

all the time, even for like a cheeky walk to Tesco's, I'm like, "Ugh!"

How are we feeling?

I'm feeling great. I've got

an amazing model so... We love.

..my work is, like, a little bit easier.

I saw the runway, I was like, "Yeah, this is my bag." Yeah.

Like, it's where I want to go.

You know, I'm just so excited

to be here, and hoping to smash it.

So you feel like you're thriving in

this kind of stressful environment?

Yeah.

I'm very much in tune with myself and...

So, you know, I'm just finding that zen.

I love that.

Turning that chaos in to calm... Ooh! So...

Put that one on a T-shirt and sell it!

Once the skin has been prepped and the brows glued...

They look like you've really stuck them down well.

Yeah. She's got really good eyebrows for it.

..the MUAs can move on to the most technical part of the look.

THe second time I've ever done prosthetics.

I'm nervous, but I'm excited to try.

Currently just adding the glue to my model's eyebrows,

and I've got it on my wee prosthetic piece as well.

I've got all my notes, I've got my little diagram,

so I'm going to be OK.

I'm currently in my final year

of make-up for TV and film,

and, honestly, I love it.

I love finding out what goes in to a film production.

I do love prosthetics.

It's still something I am learning,

but I do have like knowledge of prosthetics.

Being on Glow Up, it's a completely new experience for me.

I've never lived away from home.

Been living in the same small-town bubble for like 20 years now,

so I'm excited to explore my independence and really just

pursue this experience and just like have the best time.

Pressure's definitely on.

But, like, it's such, like, a dream job that most people, like, die for

in the industry, so I'm really just going to do my best, keep

my head down and just really just get it, just like push through.

Make-up team,

it's an hour till your models all get pulled for the line-up.

OK, that's not as much time as I actually thought.

The key to applying a successful brow cover is to wait

until the glue is tacky.

I'm just stretching it, like Isamaya said,

but I think I've put it on when it was still a bit too wet.

I've used these prosthetics before, I did them

when I was in college about three years ago.

I know how they kind of run.

Everything's kind of coming together.

Growing up in south Wales, little gay old me,

it was very hard.

You're always ridiculed for being different.

It was really challenging to try and figure out who I was.

Make-up is my everything.

I'm so happy I found it.

Now I can truly express how I feel.

Truly love who I am because of make-up.

My dream is to be a cover shoot make-up artist -

Cosmopolitan, Vogue.

I want people to go, "We need someone to come and do

"this cover shoot. Who do we call? Joe. That's who we call."

I want to be that person.

How's it going? It's going stunning, honestly.

I'm very, very excited.

While some of the MUAs are racing ahead...

Just finishing the second prosthetic.

..others appear to be struggling.

I have never done prosthetics properly before.

Oh, there we go. Sorry.

I can't lie, I'm a little bit stressed.

And even those with experience are having issues.

I'm OK.

Had a little mishap with one cos it folded in half,

so I'm just trying to quickly get this one dry

so I can get the other one on and be ready to go.

I just do quickly need to try and get this dried.

Can I have a hand, please? Yes.

I'm a bit worried about Ailish.

She's panicking, she's stressed out.

I had to do an entire brow cover on her, cos she was really struggling.

It's halfway through the assignment, just 45 minutes to go.

Make-up team, those brow covers should be on,

and you should be concealing at this point.

I've got the prosthetic on, it's a little bit, like, messy.

Just trying to stay calm and collected.

At this point, this is the best I can do.

Who are you kind of concerned about right now?

Well, I had very high hopes for Cherise, but she's being very slow.

Ugh. Why is this taking five years to dry?

Cherise has got so much glue on her brow cover,

and it's holding her back.

I'm just a little bit nervous that she won't get the whole look on.

OK, I'm very behind, but it's OK.

Ailish ruined one of her brow covers.

I'm just hoping that now she's not

so upset that it kind of holds her back.

Who do you think is like, yeah, confident?

Do you know what, at the moment,

I'm really looking at Joe and Mia.

I do love this style of make-up,

and it is something I've wanted to get into more.

They are both smashing this brief. Yeah.

They've got the brow covers on,

they've already concealed it,

they've started to move on to the next bit,

and they are leagues ahead of everyone else at the moment.

I'm very happy.

So excited to show what I can do.

My hand's started to get the shakes, I'm like, "Control yourself!"

With time running out,

the MUAs still need to complete

two crucial elements -

the layered under lash,

and grey lip.

The lip will take me like a couple of seconds now,

but I am going to go in, just do a little bit more depth.

Perfect. But it won't take me long at all.

But to succeed on the runway,

all the looks must be cohesive.

Recreating a make-up look is

not as easy as it sounds.

It is really important to follow the brief

because it's all about the key artist's look.

I'm just getting what needs done,

getting the lips done,

going to get the lashes done.

Just going to try and get out of my head and just power through.

This is not about your personal creativity,

this is about your technical skills in recreation.

You've gone very heavy black on the lip. Yeah...

I'm going to ask you to just pull it back a little bit. OK.

A bit more of a grey.

Bit more of a grey. OK, cool. Grey-zhy.

Right.

The queen has spoken.

I'm just going to blot some of that gloss down.

I feel like I'm hitting the brief.

Before the fashion show kicks off,

Joe and Mia take their coveted spots

I was like literally crying, earlier. Stay chill.

What's going on over here? I know I'm in the red chair.

I... All of us are just feeling the pressure of like being behind

and stuff not going...

Oh! Just my prosthetic like folded in half,

and I'm like, it just, like, got in my head.

Are you OK, babe? No, honestly.

But I internalised it, I ploughed through.

But I feel you, it's stressful.

And like this is a crazy environment.

Like, fashion shows are always so crazy backstage.

I've had times where I pull up

and the show's about to start in 15 minutes,

and you have like six people on you, like, one eye, this,

one hand, one foot.

I know that feeling of feeling like anxious.

But guys, honestly, just like breathe

and support each other as well, you know.

Yeah, absolutely.

With touch-ups complete...

Crazy!

..it's time to see if their looks are a hit on the runway.

We're starting.

Cue the music.

The application of my first prosthetic disrupted

the timing for me throughout the day.

I'm worried I might be in the red chairs.

Yeah, it definitely could've gone better.

The thought of, like, the red chair's there,

but happy I got it done.

There were definitely some challenging moments.

But, you know, I'm pretty proud at the way

I was able to rein it back in, and very proud of what I put out there.

The make-up was like

Black Swan meets fashion runway. Incredible.

Yeah, thought they were amazing.

The make-up is great, there was

so many of them that stood out.

It fitted HARRI's brand,

and I think...I think they did a great job.

Honestly amazing, because it's what I want to do.

I feel, like, impostor syndrome, but I feel so happy,

I feel ecstatic, it's all I wanted.

Well done. You smashed it.

And I really appreciate the help, thank you.

So that was such an amazing show.

It was, wasn't it? They did such a great job.

They looked great.

And I really, really... I'm so proud of Joe and Mia. They smashed it.

They were the first to be finished,

and they still executed at a very high level.

So, shall we talk about the others?

I think we should. All right.

First up we have Cherise.

She really struggled managing her time.

She put so much glue on to her brow covers that she was standing there

for about 20 minutes, waiting for them to dry.

Ugh! You know, there is creasing

in that prosthetic.

It's lifting, it's bubbling.

Obviously, just the timing and the way fashion shows work,

it was just very difficult to pull myself back,

but I'm proud of myself for not crumbling in the moment. Yeah.

So Jake was very nervous.

I think he did a great execution.

I really like the contouring for the eyebrows.

This is Josh's model.

Overall, it was really warm,

and I'd specified this has to be

a cool, greyish look.

Either Josh hasn't listened to the brief,

or he doesn't understand undertone.

And this is Jamie's model.

I love the blending of this one.

That's a really seamless brow cover.

Next we have Ailish.

She messed up one of the brow covers,

and we had to get her a new one,

so she lost a lot of confidence,

and that kind of set the tone

for the rest of her make-up application.

I feel like it's a little patchy, here and there.

You can see it's too pale on the brows.

The lashes are uneven.

I mean, I look at this make-up

and I see absolute sheer panic.

I've never done anything like this big before, like, fashion-wise,

and I just got in me own head.

So, next we have Jade.

She's nailed the lash,

but I just felt like some of

her blending and contouring,

it just didn't feel elevated enough for me.

Yeah.

Kat's a true Goth,

and this look was made for her.

I think she did quite a good job.

I like the raw quality of this make-up.

But, at the same time,

it's just not gothy enough.

So next we have Rahual.

A fashion challenge is like my dream.

This is the industry that I aspire to move in to.

And I'm just trying to wait until

the judges give me my tea at the end,

and I'm going to drink it. So, that's where I'm at right now.

Now, Rahual was the only person that I asked to pull back the look.

He gave the model a jet-black lip.

It's frustrating because your demonstration was so clear.

My other issue was that I specifically asked

all of the MUAs to come and sign off

their model with me, and he didn't.

Say, what? No!

He just signed his model off, and off they went.

You have to get your make-up signed off.

Yeah. Shocking.

I think we've got our two to go in to the red chairs.

I think so.

Oh, my God.

The next morning...

Oooh! Oh, my God.

Do you know what? This one is my fave.

And this one. That's like one of the best ones ever.

Yeah, one of us is going to make it on here, which is crazy.

Guys, to think in two seconds, we'll be seeing who's in which chair.

But it's like one small thing sent me in to like a full spiral.

I just don't know where I stand at the moment.

Again, I think so many of us were anxious,

so I know it's going to come down to the technicalities.

If an MUA's name is on one of the two red chairs,

they'll be heading for the face-off elimination at the end of the day.

Ailish, Isamaya's feedback was that you struggled

with your prosthetics and because of that, it knocked your confidence

and threw your make-up off.

Rahual, you didn't do the make-up that Isamaya did in the demo.

It's really important that you listen to the brief.

Rahual, Ailish, I'm going to let you know when you can start,

A creative brief tests a totally different skillset

to the industry assignment.

Get it going, girl.

It's all about artistry and imagination.

Even if you smash it in the assignment,

if you fall short in the creative brief, you still could go home.

He's taken off his tash!

We've lost another mo-bro...

Ah! ..to the make-up gods.

Ooh, that burns!

Friends and family always say I'm super empathetic.

So my look is based on a Peruvian lily as that symbolises empathy.

I think flowers are a really strong metaphor for people.

Bold on the outside,

but they're also very delicate and sensitive,

which is a little bit like me.

Funnily enough, Jade and I are actually doing a similar concept,

but very different interpretations.

We both chose empathy as our theme,

and found a Peruvian lily as a great sort of representation for it.

We've gone for very, very different colour schemes,

I went for oranges, reds, yellows.

I'm really hoping the comparison isn't too heavy,

and that our looks kind of stand on their own.

Look at Rahual.

He's meditating.

He's getting emotionally ready for the task.

I really wanted to go towards my spiritual side.

You know, a little bit out of this world.

I believe my power of influence is my own inner light,

and being able to reflect that out to other people,

so that they can see the light within themselves.

My own personal make-up style is vibrancy, lots of colour,

and mystical and ethereal kind of vibes.

I'm Indian, my parents are from Indian descent.

My culture and my heritage are very dear to me.

I've explored a lot of ancient practices and spiritual practices.

Being a spiritual person,

it's a very important part of who I am, and what makes me me.

The fact that I'm here and able to showcase

my love and passion for make-up

is a dream come true,

and I'm really excited to be able to share that with the world.

You know, I've had a bit of time to compose, and I've got a game plan.

I can absolutely smash it and get out of this red chair.

If Rahual or Ailish can wow the judges enough to beat the seat,

another MUA will take their place in the face-off elimination.

So, today, I am going to be transforming myself

into a glamorous lion.

The scars are to represent my past,

where I didn't like myself and I didn't feel good enough.

I'm now this courageous lion,

ready to pounce on anything in my way.

I think it takes a lot of power to kind of stand in your originality

and your uniqueness, and I influence others to do the same with drag.

I'm going to be turning myself into a fabulous pink poodle.

Like, a poodle that's had their hair dyed is so unique and fun and camp.

Technically, the second prosthetic I've ever applied, after yesterday.

Rahual, Ailish, your time starts now.

Having less time than everyone else

is probably not the best scenario to be in,

especially for a look I'm doing that's this big,

but creativity's what I love to do, so I decided to take that

characteristic and turn it into this big explosion of colour.

I am partially colour-blind,

so the trickiest part of my look

would be having to make the shade purple, cos I...

I do struggle to see purple.

But I'm doing a big look cos I'm determined to get out of this seat.

I ain't staying here.

Jake. Hi! What is going on?

What isn't going on! Right?

Erm, I'm basically just glueing down this, like...

this latex headpiece that I've made.

I'm just trying to get it to stick to my skin,

it's not something that I've tried before, so...

OK. What is your characteristic then?

So, basically, my characteristic is just hyping my friends up.

I help them get their sort of self-doubt parasites out.

Now I'm showing that, a physical embodiment of somebody doing that.

I've made some clay worms.

These are the negative voices,

and they're actually moulded to the inside of my ears.

Ah! So they'll be like this.

This is up my nose. OK. Love that.

So... I've had it in my hand already, love that.

Oh, no, don't worry. I'm joking!

That's the first time that I've actually put it up there.

It's going to be just taking my own advice,

so I'm trying my best to believe in myself.

Wow!

Rahual is really racing ahead.

He said, "I had 15 minutes less,

"but I'm going to do it 15 minutes faster."

My game plan is to just get the colour on

because I want to give myself enough time to,

you know, perfect the universe that I'm planning to create.

I'm getting myself out of this red chair by the end of today.

I always get told, like, my perspective's so different,

so I wanted to try and do a look

inspired by the ink blot drawings used in psychology.

I am using, like, clingfilm

to get, like, two perfect symmetrical images.

I've always been called an ice queen,

because I don't show emotions a lot.

I'll be painted basically fully white,

and I will be adding four prosthetics, maybe three.

You do have emotions, though.

You do. Yeah, I'm mostly like just happy.

Time's moving quite quickly.

As long as this base is like, mm,

and the rest should go quite smoothly.

I've got like a coloured background,

and then black cracks to sort of show like the paths.

Basically the look is, no matter what's happened in the past,

you still need to shine through and be your colourful self.

I hope that Val and Dom sort of see that too.

I'm just laying down the base colours using a lot of face paints

just to get a really nice sort of even ombre effect.

Right now, I am just adding the contours to the face,

and I want it to emulate the shape of a petal.

Two different flower looks, it's like War Of The Roses.

Everyone's look in the room is really, really strong.

I'm a little bit worried that this is not going to be enough.

So the prosthetic's on, I'm just getting the colour down.

We're at the point where I've got all the elements on,

now I'm going to be going in

and I'm just going to be adding in those finer details,

like some brushstrokes to create hair movement.

Honestly, I'm feeling great.

I am really happy with how this is looking, personally, for myself.

I'm currently using dark purple eye shadow and a tiny

bit of black, just to create like depth on the outer corner here.

It is very time-consuming doing gems but then, like, it's very effective.

Wow, you are definitely colourful here,

and I can see your arm is like filled to the brim with colours.

Yeah! Because I've been mixing like different shades to get

deeper ones in like the paintwork, like lighter, darker,

so I've been using my arm as a paint palette.

Mixing the different shades is probably the hardest

cos I am partially colour-blind.

Yeah. So how does the colour blindness impact your ability to

kind of play with colours and make-up? I would say,

blues and purples, reds and oranges, greens and browns,

they all look the same to me, and I can't really see pastels.

OK.

So all the paints are, like, labelled at the bottom,

so that's how I work around with the paints.

That is amazing.

I can't wait to be able to take that breath in through my nose.

I love the mottled skin,

there's something unearthed about it,

I mean, it's a perfectly nice execution for a Halloween.

I just need to prove myself more and I just... That's all it is.

The brief was "your influential characteristic,"

and I can't see that in this.

Looking back, I'm like,

"Yeah, I could've really pushed it a little bit further."

I was... A lot of the techniques I used were really comfortable.

I think we're all in agreement on who should be going in to

this first Face Off Elimination.

Ailish, your look was quite simplistic

and lacked refinement, so you will be the first MUA

going in to the Face Off.

Rahual, like Ailish, you had 15 minutes less,

but, boy, did you run at that make-up.

You delivered a well-executed, thought-out look.

I didn't expect to be in the Face Off in week one, but I've

got faith in myself, I'm a driven person, I don't give up easily.

I think it's ironic that now I'm in the bottom two,

I've been gassing on about the fact of how confident I am,

but I'm ready to show why I have that confidence,

why I should remain in this competition.

To create a level playing field,

the MUAs will face off over a set of identical twins.

DOMINIC: We do the Face Off because we want to strip back everything,

take away all the fuss and bring it straight down to technique.

We need to make sure that the person going through each week is

the best technically.

For your first Face Off, we want you to execute a striking

symmetrical negative space graphic liner.

The eye liner should be clean, sharp,

balanced and complement the model's eye shape.

The key to a great negative space liner is symmetry.

To map out the placement, draw three dots.

One, two, three.

Start your liner from the inner corner, across the lash line.

Now to do your second line.

Leave a gap close to the tear duct, draw just above the socket line,

carry it through and connect it to your outer wing.

Clean up with a damp cotton bud to define and refine your edge.

And there you have it - a striking negative spaced liner.

MUAs, you have 15 minutes, and your time starts now.

MUAs, you have ten minutes left.

Ailish is doing a little bit of both eyes at the same time,

whereas Joe, he went in for the kill, he delivered a big eye.

The problem is, he's now got to try

and replicate that on the other side,

and I wonder if he's going to be successful in creating symmetry.

Ailish's symmetry was off balance.

Yeah. I hope she sees that and rectifies it.

It's too close to tell right now. Yeah.

Well, that was interesting. Mm.

Halfway through, it felt like they were level pegging, but when

we moved towards the finish line,

it really opened up for Ailish.

It's clean, sharp, and symmetrical.

..it's all over the show. Yeah.

It's inconsistent in its thickness.

Yep. And the overall shape is very

clearly two very different eye liners.

I think we have a clear winner. I think we do.

Ailish, your look was precise,

clean, and symmetrical.

Joe, your look was bold and striking.

But the line was inconsistent

and the negative space eye liner was unsymmetrical.

So therefore, Joe, please pick up your kit, you'll be going home.
