Original subtitles

Heat.

[screaming]

Heat.

The mountain orcs, they attacked the

garrison. The old orcs from the island,

they are coming.

>> They drove us [music] into the dark.

That ends tonight.

Narc

here. Their wall is weakest [music]

here.

The engines are near done, my king. By

the next dusk, we march.

Heat.

Heat.

They told me these woods could not be

held, that what lives in them cannot be

killed.

I have spent my life proving frightened

men wrong.

One more morning.

I know most of these faces. By

nightfall, I'll know which ones are

gone.

Not all of them.

Not if I can help it. They'll come from

the trees, tall and faster than they

look. Hold the wall. Don't chase them

in. And if the wall breaks, sir, then we

break with it.

>> I've never seen one up close.

>> Stay behind your shield. You'll be fine.

>> 40 shafts. Make them count.

>> Easy, girl. Easy. Not yet. My father

worked ground like this.

He said the earth doesn't care whose

blood feeds it. It grows the same.

I used to call that grim.

Today it's a comfort.

>> Sir, that's Aldrich's horse. Where's

Aldrich?

>> No rider. That's their answer. Then they

sent him back to frighten us. Sound the

line.

>> You saw what they did to one of us

today. They learn. Hold together and

they cannot break you. Alone you fall.

Together we hold. For the eagle and for

the man beside [screaming] you.

>> Straps are good, sir.

>> They'd better be.

One more time.

[music]

>> Sound the advance.

>> Easy. [clears throat]

We've done this before. We'll do it

again.

>> On my signal. Not before. Let them come

into the open first.

>> Loaded and ready.

Sniper.

Engines ready, sir.

>> Hold. Hold.

Something's moving in there.

>> Steady. Steady.

>> Come on then. Let's see. You

>> be brave, sons. Today you are not

soldiers. You are warriors. [screaming]

Hell [groaning] scream

now [screaming] loose

again. Keep it on them.

Riders with me [screaming] for the

eagle. Sh

loose.

[groaning] Yeah.

Heat. [screaming]

[groaning]

[groaning and screaming] Oh,

[groaning]

[screaming]

[groaning]

[screaming]

don't be afraid, son. There is no better

death for a man than to die fighting.

[panting]

[cheering]

>> Go on, son. End his misery. [cheering]

>> [screaming]

>> Who sent you?

>> Who [screaming] sent you? [laughter]

[screaming]

The true king of the orcs sent me and he

is coming. The age of men is ending.

human. No blade of yours can stop him.

[laughter]

[groaning and screaming]

[sighs and panting]

Then let him come. He will find no fear

here. Only steal.

>> It's time, my king. The troops are

waiting.

I hope you are right priest or your life

will end.

>> [music]

>> brothers. They called us beasts. They

buried us in the dark and prayed we

would not rise. Today we rise. Today the

world learns our name. We march to war.

Others [screaming]

for too long we lived in their shadow.

That ends tonight. Our time to rule has

come. Follow me and we will burn their

kingdoms to ash and feast in their halls

for glory, for blood, the war.

It's time to march, brothers.

>> [groaning]

>> move you worms.

Smell that fear on the wind. The stone

kings know we come.

>> Let them cower behind their walls. Walls

fall, bones break. By dawn, their holes

are ash.

Move. Get them aboard.

Load the beasts onto the ships. Drive

them on faster.

You are faster.

>> Eve, get that one moving.

Thank you.

Move maggots.

War is upon us and it will not wait.

[groaning]

In the white reaches of the north, there

stands a wall older than the kingdoms of

men. Behold Dunhal, the north gate, the

last shield of the realm of men. Through

these doors pass kings, and the tidings

that unmake them. For a thousand years

the sons of men have held this pass. Not

since the last great host of orcs came

down from the wastes has its gate been

broken. Here the realm keeps its oldest

oath that the dark shall not pass while

one watchman still stands.

Yet in those days a shadow lay upon the

hearts of men. Each watchman felt it. A

cold that was not of the winter.

The very air had grown still as before a

storm long dreaded.

But the years wore on, and the memory of

the enemy faded from the minds of men.

Fewer came each season to keep the wall,

for no shadow had darkened the pass in a

thousand years.

Yet even then the enemy was stirring,

and his shadow grew long upon the world.

But the men of the wall knew it not, and

warmed their hands [clears throat]

against the cold.

Loose.

Loose.

Yet life endures even in the shadow of

the mountains. The men who kept the wall

asked for little and made their cheer of

bread and fire and the company of their

fellows. For such small things in the

end are what the brave defend. And so

the days passed as they ever had, and

all seemed well in the realm of men. The

smith at his forge, the captain at his

watch, the valley quiet under snow. But

peace, like the winter sun, does not

last.

>> Ride.

Move to the ships. Our king is waiting.

Get the beasts inside and feed them.

Fill their bellies. They'll need their

strength for the slaughter ahead.

[groaning]

[groaning]

>> [groaning]

>> They drove us into the dark.

That ends [clears throat] tonight.

Tonight we take what is ours. The storm

has come. [screaming]

[groaning]

Oh,

heat, heat.

Heat. Heat.

Heat. Heat.

Come

on.

My king, the ships are almost loaded. By

dawn, the fleet will be ready to sail.

>> Priest,

bless this horde. Anoint them for blood

and fire, and ready them for the war

that comes.

>> It will be done, my king. They will

march blessed for slaughter.

Move you dogs faster. The ships will not

wait.

>> [groaning]

>> pain. [screaming]

[groaning]

>> [groaning and screaming]

>> The ships are almost ready, my king. By

dawn, the fleet will be ready for war.

>> Good. Then dawn brings their ending.

Priest, bless this horde for war.

Wind.

Woo.

See

[panting and sighs]

[sighs]

[groaning]

again.

Oh,

go

Narcila. [clears throat]

Melonim.

Oh, [groaning]

[snorts]

[groaning]

heat.

>> [screaming]

[groaning]

[sighs]

>> No, it cannot be. They were broken long

ago, cast down into the deep. Their

fires drowned, their name unmade. No

power beneath stone or sky should wake

them again. And yet I have seen it. The

old dark stirs once more, and the wall

stands blind to what comes.

I must warn the others.

>> [laughter]

>> Brothers, tonight the field is ours.

When the darkness came, you stood and

you did not break. Drink to the fallen

who bought this victory with their

blood. And drink to yourselves, sons of

men, for my pride in you has no end. To

the living

>> and to the dead.

>> And to the dead,

>> for General.

>> General, we have marched under many

banners, but none we would follow into

the shadow itself, save yours. No finer

lord of men has ever led us.

So, General, since we fought so bravely,

when shall we see some leave? A little

wine, a woman's smile, and a bed that

isn't made of mud.

>> When orcs grow fair, and the mud turns

to feathers. Until then, soldier. I am

the only sweetheart you shall get.

[laughter]

>> Go on, lad. You slay your first orc

today. A man's deed earns a man's drink.

>> He fells an orc and he's fallen by a cup

of wine. [laughter]

You fought bravely today, lad.

>> Will there be more battles, General?

>> Evil never sleeps, son.

We fight until we die.

My heart tells me what is coming will be

darker than all we have endured.

>> Hold. Who rides at this hour?

>> Steady, lad. Who do you seek?

>> General Veric. I ride from the capital.

>> Follow me.

There, lad. General Veric. I must speak

with him at once.

[sighs]

[panting]

My lord, I bear a letter for you

from his [music] majesty.

It is most urgent, my lord. The king

commands that you read it at once.

Whose hand sealed this?

And who told you where I was to be

found?

Go. There is meat and ale by the fire.

You have earned them.

So my father lies dying.

The capital calls me home at last.

I am called to the capital before dawn.

The men are yours now. Feed them, bind

their wounds, and keep the watch fires

burning until I return.

Jurich, the camp is yours. Rebuild what

is [music] broken and hold the men here

until I return.

See that they are cared for. Maric

Tenure, you ride with me. We leave

before first light.

Heat.

Heat.

Heat.

Heat.

>> [groaning]

>> Pull you worthless filth. Tighten it,

fool. You'll drown us all.

>> We strike from the north. When we reach

their shore, we take Dunehold, the

citadel guarding the Horn Pass through

the Frost Fangs, and the realm of men

lies open.

We will camp on their shore and attack

once we are ready, with full force.

Generals, prepare your troops. My king,

soon you will rule the kingdom of men.

We will land our troops here. Here on

this shore, the forest will provide

cover. And we can build towers and

catapults for our troops. The best way

to attack the wall is through here.

Then that's the path we take.

Rest now, my king. The morning brings

war enough.

So it begins. The new age. The age of

oars.

[groaning and screaming]

>> [screaming]

>> Heat.

[groaning and screaming]

Heat.

Heat. [groaning]

[groaning]

Heat.

>> [groaning]

>> Enough. Back you brainless beasts

clawing at each other like ravid dogs

while there's man flesh waiting on the

shore. Save the fight for the humans,

you maggots, or I'll gut the lot of you

myself.

[groaning]

Father, god of the old blood fallen in

ages past,

your son calls to you across the deep.

Lend me your strength, old one, and let

the world remember the orcs. My king,

what you ask of the old god, the living

cannot give. Some doors open only from

the other side. Hold your course and do

not mourn me.

My lord, a letter from the capital.

[cheering]

>> He has returned.

Prince Harry.

>> The prince is home.

>> Prince Harry. [cheering]

>> Father, who is that man?

>> That is Prince Varic, the greatest

captain our kingdom has ever known.

My prince, you have ridden hard. We did

not look for you from the east [music]

so soon.

>> Where is my father, the king?

>> In his chambers, my prince. He has

awaited you.

Who is there?

It is Corvin, father, your eldest son.

Come closer, my son.

How do you fair, father?

Rest easy. Now, where is Varic? Has your

brother come yet?

[sighs]

>> Varic rides for the capital, father. I

sent word to him by my own hand. He will

be here before the moon turns.

>> Good. Good. I have need of him, Corivan.

And the hour grows short.

>> Why such haste, father? What is it you

would have of him?

I would not wound you, my son. But in

these dark days, I deem Varic the man

who must wear the crown.

He is the younger I know it. Yet the

realm will need a sword, not a scholar

in the years to come. Varic is a great

captain, father, a leader of men. But he

is no statesman. [music] He knows war,

not the court.

>> That is my hope in you, Corivan.

Guide him. Teach him the things he does

not know.

>> As you wish it, father.

>> I will not let Varic take what is mine.

The crown is my destiny. Father,

forgive me.

What? What have you done?

>> You were a weak man, father. The realm

needs a stronger hand than yours.

[sighs]

[screaming]

Father,

who did this? Who struck you?

Corin,

this dagger.

Corven gave me its twin. What is it

doing here?

Murderer.

He has slain the king. Seize him.

[screaming]

You set me up, brother. This was you.

>> Take him. This traitor has murdered the

king. My own brother. A kinslayer.

[groaning]

>> What have you done, brother? What wrong

did I ever do to you?

>> No one wronged you, brother. You reached

for the throne that is mine by right and

the king for your greed.

>> [panting]

>> You will answer for this, brother. I

swear it upon our father's soul. You

will answer.

They said the cold sea kept no roads.

They were wrong.

Heat. Heat.

Move you maggots. Secure the shore.

Faster or I'll have your hide.

Promised land,

>> brothers. [screaming] The land our

father promised us, now we claim it.

One by one, the kingdoms of men will

fall. Raise the siege towers. Build the

catapults. Set them on the high

[screaming] ground. Throw up the tents.

Dig the trenches. Ready our defenses.

Work fast, you dogs. By nightfall, this

shore is a fortress. Move.

The age of men is ending

and the age of the orc begins.

[groaning]

Heat

up

here.

Hear

me, lords of the realm, and hold your

peace. Let it be known to all gathered

in this hall that General Varic, once

shield and sword of the crown, stands

accused of the blackest treason. That by

his own hand he struck down our king and

spilled the royal blood upon the stones.

By the law of the realm and the will of

the gods, he shall answer for this

blood. On this day and within these

walls, the trial begins. Let the accused

be brought before this hall, and let

judgment fall upon him as the truth

alone shall demand.

Good luck.

In the name of the new king, King Corin,

sovereign of the realm and keeper of the

eagle throne, I declare this trial

opened. Let the accused be brought to

stand before us. Let the truth be

weighed without favor, and let justice

be done before gods and men. Behold him,

once called the shield of the realm, now

brought low before the throne of Corin.

Grave are the charges laid against you,

General Varic. Speak now if any defense

yet remains to you and let it be heard

before this assembly. What say you? Hear

me. This trial is a lie. A snare to hang

an innocent man. I did not slay the

king, my own father. It was my brothers

that struck him down. Cororiv is the

king's slayer and he wears a stolen

crown. [screaming]

Murder.

Heat.

Heat.

These are no common alts. Bigger,

armored, moving like an army. I have

never seen their like. This is no

raiding band. It is a host come for war.

>> [groaning]

>> At first shant we strike the all head

on. The catapults will batter it. The

towers carry us over. When it falls, the

pass is ours. And beyond it, the gate to

the kingdoms of men.

Here, their wall is weakest here.

You tonight, slip past their watch and

put eyes on that wall. Every gate, every

weakness, bring it to me before dawn.

No wall of ours will hold against this

host. Stone and timber will not stop

them. They will break through and all

beyond will fall.

I must return. They must be warned.

Behold the blade that pierced our king.

This jeweled dagger, still dark with

royal blood, was found in the hand of

the accused. With this, General Varic

struck down his own father, our

sovereign and our lord.

You have heard the accusation laid

against you, General Varic, and you have

seen the weapon that bears witness to

it. This council would have you answer

for both.

Speak now. What say you in your defense?

>> That blade was a gift given to me by my

own brother in days of friendship long

past.

But it vanished from my keeping many

months ago. I believed it lost. I have

not laid eyes upon that nail since. Not

until this very hour. Hear how he weaves

his lies. This man is false. Every word

that falls from his mouth is poison clad

in the robes of truth. Believe him not.

Yet do not take my word alone. I have a

witness, one who beheld the truth with

their own eyes. With the council's

leave, let them be brought forth into

this hall.

>> Your majesty, the accuser would call

forth his witness. If it pleased the

throne, grant your leave that they be

brought before this council that the

truth may at last be heard. Let the

witness be brought forth. The throne

grants its leave. Let them stand before

this council and speak what they have

seen.

>> Stand forth and name yourself before

this court. What were you to the king?

I was the king's own servant, my lord. I

tended his chambers and saw to his every

need. Each and every day I saw him, my

lords. With my own eyes, I swear it. In

the dead of night, the general stole

into the king's own chambers, a dagger

hidden beneath his cloak. He crept

through the shadowed halls, silent as a

thief, where no honest man had caused to

walk. It was him. It was Varic. Look

upon this hall and tell us true. The man

you saw that night, is he among us

still? If he stands here, raise your

hand and point him out.

There it is him. That is the man I saw.

>> My king, the evidence is laid bare, and

Nort remains in doubt. With your leave,

I would call this council to its

judgment and cast my vote against the

accused guilty.

This court has weighed the truth and the

people have spoken. General Varic is

found guilty of the murder of our king.

For this crime, there can be but one

sentence,

death.

>> [screaming]

>> I will not hang on a liar's word. By

ancient right, I claim trial by combat.

Let steel decide my fate, and let the

gods be my judge.

>> So be it. By ancient right, it is

granted. Let the gods decide.

>> I will avenge my father. [screaming]

Heat.

Heat.

>> [groaning]

>> The age of men is ending.

And the age of the orc begins.

Heat. [cheering]

Heat.

>> [cheering]

>> Let the trial begin. [screaming]

Hey,

[groaning]

They sent a mountain to kill one man.

Not today.

They forgot the man was a general.

>> [sighs]

>> skill against a mountain of muscle.

[groaning]

[screaming]

Not yet.

And the mountain did not move.

Blow after blow and still he rolled

clear.

[groaning and screaming]

>> Down was not the same as beaten.

>> Is that all?

Heat.

[screaming]

Heat.

Heat. [screaming]

Heat.

[groaning]

Heat.

[cheering]

Heat.

>> [groaning]

>> Heat.

Heat.

A

Heat.

[cheering]

Heat.

[cheering]

I've earned my freedom.

>> [cheering]

>> What say you?

>> King.

[cheering]

>> The trial by combat is ended. By blade

and by blood, the victory is won. And it

belongs to General Varic. [screaming]

Freedom. Freedom.

>> You have won your trial, brother, and

your life,

but not your freedom. You shall guard

the northern wall all your days.

I will have my vengeance, brother,

though it take all my years.

>> Take him from my sight. Let the wall

have him.

Please, General.

Heat. Heat.

>> [groaning]

>> Heat.

Heat.

Heat. Heat.

There we go.

That's closer.

move dog faster.

I will of avenged you, father.

Is the cart made ready, driver? We have

a long road before us. Isire, all is

ready.

On your mounts, all of you.

The hour has come.

Forward. Tapume. Forward. Ride. Move

out. All of you.

So this is what they have made of me. A

general in chains, hold like a beast to

the slaughter. What waits beyond these

bars, I cannot know. Perhaps death,

perhaps worse. Yet one purpose holds me

still. My father's blood cries out for

revengeance. And while breath remains in

me, I shall answer it.

>> Orin,

I'd hear me. I did not kill the king.

Whatever that wretch swore before,

whatever the council, they have told

you, it is a lie.

I am no murderer.

>> I know it, Varic.

I have known since the witness first

opened his mouth. There's no truth in

the man. It was my brother. The king

himself my own blood. Heed the deed,

laid it at my feet, and caged me to bury

the truth with me. The man you serve is

the murderer, Orin. Not I.

>> I know it, Varic.

In my heart, I have known something is a

mess.

The witness too eager, the charge too

clean, the king too swift to judge his

own brother. It does not sit right with

me. But I am one man and he is the king.

I cannot free you. I cannot stand alone

against the throne and all the realm.

Forgive me, Varic. There is nothing I

can do. Yet what am I against a crown?

One old soldier sworn to obey. I cannot

loose your chains nor stay the king's

hand.

Forgive my can do.

There is nothing I

brothers of the deep.

Word has risen from the world above. The

surface burns. Our orcin of the dry

lands now wage war upon the race of men.

Then blood calls to blood. Shall we rise

from the depths and carry the tide to

their shores? Long has it been the deep

and the dry have spoken as one. Welcome

Greybeard to the drowned holes. Hail

Lord of the tides. I come from the world

above where war stirs against our kin.

The hour is late and the deep is needed.

Hail, king of the drowned holes. I have

crossed stone and shadow to kneel at

your waters. Above us the fires of war

are lit. And I come to wake the deep

from its long silence.

The dry world forgot us an age ago,

Greybeard. Let the surface burn as it

once let us drown.

Why should the deep spill its blood for

those who turned their backs upon the

sea? Because their blood is your blood,

Lord. Surface and deep were one people

before the sundering of the seas. Your

brothers marched to war. And a king who

forsakes his kin is a king of nothing at

all. And the men of the surface,

they hunted us, poisoned our shallows,

and named us monsters.

You ask me to drown my warriors for the

kin of our own hunters, wizard.

Hear me, Lord.

If the surface falls, the men will not

halt at the shore. They will drain your

seas and chain your halls one by one.

The war you scorn today will drown you

tomorrow. You speak of tides, wizard,

but it is my people who will not return

from them.

How many of mine must I cut into a war

that began far above us without one

voice from the deep? Better to fall as a

king remembered than to rot as a king

forgotten.

Let the songs tell that the deep rose

when the world cried out. Give me your

tide, Lord, and history will fear your

name.

Then let the surface hear the sea

answer. Rise, gray bearded. The deep

marshes to war. My warriors are yours,

and the tide now comes for the world

above.

[sighs]

A this

Sleep on, men of the dry world. Dream

while you can. The sea has woken and it

remembers.

We rise beneath you now. And your shores

will be the last thing your kind ever

holds.

Heat.

Heat.

Heat. Heat.

Heat.

[screaming]

Heat.

Heat. Heat. [screaming]

[groaning]

Stop the cart.

>> All right. All right. I'll stop. Don't

[groaning and screaming]

>> [groaning]

>> the key. Ga,

>> I don't have it.

I I swear it I don't have it.

Show yourselves. Who are you?

your own. My lord, we never left you.

My brothers.

For a moment, you old fool. I thought

you'd turned on me.

[laughter]

And what would you do without me, my

king?

>> My king, an orc host marches on the

north wall.

Then we ride.

We must reach the wall there, Nightfall.

Not far now, my lord. It lies beyond the

pass.

Okay,

Heat. Heat.

Heat. Heat.

Heat. Heat.

>> [panting]

>> My king, a horde of orcs is upon the

north wall of men. They make ready to

fall upon our brothers.

>> So the old enemy wakes at last, and the

men stand alone.

By the old law and the bond of ages,

when shadow falls upon men, the dwarves

do not stand.

We march. [screaming and groaning]

Once more the dark rises and once more

[screaming] we answer.

>> They name us a people of stone and stone

does not break. When the dark came for

our brothers, we did not look aside.

Tonight the mountain marshes and the

shadow shall fear us once more.

If it's true, if the orcs are coming in

those numbers, we can't hold the wall.

We must

It's far and then it's true.

You made it before the pass closed.

Good. We've little time. They've landed

in the fjord. Thousands. The only road

into the realm runs through this pass.

Through our wall. If it falls, nothing

stands between them and the south.

So much white.

So many places to lose an army.

>> You'll take the wall, Varic. Hold it,

whatever the cost. Orin, you keep the

ground beneath it.

If the wall breaks, you're what's left.

See that something survives to carry the

warning south.

[music]

>> [music]

>> From this tower to the gate is mine. You

take the south stretch. Keep the

coughlands hot and the archers thick.

And if they bring ladders faster than we

can burn them, then we burn faster. No

man leaves his section. The wall holds

or none of us see the spring. They are

coming. The dark that has no name that

swallowed the kingdoms before ours. I

will not lie to you. We cannot win this.

But we were not made to win. We were

made to stand. So hold the wall and let

the shadow learn what men are.

So it comes at last. Long have we feared

this dawn. Then let us meet it as men,

not as shadows. Whatever falls this day,

old friend, it was an honor to stand

beside you.

>> Luck go with you, Orin. May we drink

together when the dark is broken. And if

not, then in the halls beyond. Hold

fast, Varic.

>> [snorts]

>> What happened to you? Who did this?

[panting and sighs]

What has happened here?

Who has done this?

[panting and sighs]

>> The mountain orcs. They attacked the

garrison. The old orcs from the island.

They are coming.

>> The old orcs have not walked these lands

in a thousand years.

Sound the alarm. Take every soldier to

the garrison.

[music]

I have seen the shadow rise before in

years long past.

We drove it into the sea and called it

ended. But the dark does not die. It

only waits. And I fear the night that

comes now is deeper than the one we

knew.

>> [groaning]

>> You right hand.

>> [groaning]

>> He block it.

[groaning]

Fire. Lash it tight. It has a wall to

eat.

[groaning]

Eyes in the dark. Nothing comes or goes.

The engines are near done, my king. By

the next dusk, we march.
