Big, big week for me. And this weekend, even big. I'm excited.

Shout out to the chairman, Myles LaFose, for actually coming out with the jersey,

right? Because he is not ubiquitously regarded as a guy who pays off. That is

correct. That is correct. There's a whole story going back to the ultimate

fighter. Oh, shut up. You don't like to pay. Yeah, let's get into this. You

don't like to pay. You bet. And you play golf with him. There's no point in

playing and gambling because he will not pay you no matter what. Facts.

So Demetrius Johnson is one of the greatest mixed martial arts athletes of

all time, the most decorated flyweight champion of all time. But as I sit here

today, Michael, I've never been more juiced for a flyweight championship

fight than the one we have Saturday night. Oh, 100%. I was just going to add

to that, though. Alessandro Pantoja, sorry, pardon me, Joshua Vann, doesn't

know who Demetrius Johnson is. All right. See, that's kind of ridiculous. I

think that's so disrespectful, honestly. I'm being completely honest. No, no. So

I asked him, I said, you said that a while ago.

Have you gone back since and watched his fights? He's like, no.

I watch my own fights to get better and see what he does wrong. I'm like, all

right, fair enough. I respect that. I kind of like that, though. Sometimes

when you get really into the sport, you start over-respecting people as opposed

to really focusing on what you're great at. Yeah, but you can look at someone

like Demetrius Johnson and have a look and maybe get a few tips and see how to

do that crazy suplex into armbar and all the stuff that he did.

He says, Josh Vann is going to box your face off, come forward, battle through

adversity, and just show how tough he is. He's got crazy knockout power.

needs to really watch anybody.

I kind of like it. And of course, the first time these two met, they were very

cordial and polite and respectful and Pantoja afterwards said, hey, fair play.

It's his time. Now there's a little beef here. So I think it makes it even

better. Joshua Vann was also like 11 years old when Demetrius Johnson

competed in that inaugural UFC flyweight tournament, right?

Yeah, but then he ultimately held the belt forever and defended it 11 times.

I don't think that Joshua Vann, by 15, still had no idea he was getting into

mixed martial arts. He knew.

Here's the issue.

And I don't want to sound like the old guy, oh, these young people don't have

any respect.

Joshua Vann has respect.

Joshua Vann, though, believes that he is going on a generational run with this

championship.

A fight ago, we were talking about Pantoja as the guy that was possibly

going to challenge Demetrius Johnson for the greatest flyweight of all time.

Yeah. It's so quickly.

People forget, right?

I don't know. I told you respect this guy. He was really heels of Demetrius

Johnson in terms of taking that title. But you know, one fight, one arm break,

one incorrect break fall.

Yeah. The course of everything.

People forget. You're right. It's crazy. Van's certainly not the only fighter on

this roster who doesn't watch mixed martial arts actively. Taito Iwasa

barely knows who Islam Akasha is. Let us show you what is going on in UFC 331.

this weekend. Of course, we mentioned the main event, but the prelim portion,

strong to quite strong. The Apple mentioned Tai Tuivasa trying to avoid an

eight successive loss. He welcomes the big boy Robelis to Spain back for a

second UFC stint, and we'll see if Chido Vera can get on track in the featured

prelim. He takes on Charles Jourdain, who's off to a shiny 3-0 start since

moving down to 135 pounds. Main card looks like this. What a light

heavyweight opener we have. Alonzo Mennefield feels like this Ivo

Baranevsky challenge is such that it's brought out the best in him in his

training camp. That's a huge fight at 205.

Arman Sarukyan in the co-main event. Five rounds and a true lightweight

eliminator against Mauricio Hufi. And eventually, all roads lead us to Joshua

Vann and Alexandre Pantoja in a rematch for the undisputed UFC.

All right, emceeing the morning weigh-in this morning over at the Host Hotel.

Megan O'Leary now joins us live.

Joshua Vann, first main event for him, second UFC title defense. What has been

your takeaway from Joshua and how he's handled this fight week, MJ?

Hey, well, the confidence is certainly really high, but I actually kind of want

to circle back to something you guys were just talking about.

Listen, there's no bigger fan of the flyweight division than me. He was

actually on my podcast, Becoming a Fighter. And I took some time to talk to

Joshua Vann about the history of the flyweight division. But, you know, I

think Daniel just said, like.

By 15 years old, he knew he wanted to fight. He's had a really unique journey

to the octagon. He was born in Myanmar and he and his family were avoiding

religious persecution.

So they were refugees in Malaysia. And then he didn't actually come to the

United States until he was in middle school.

And he really struggled when he first got to Houston.

Obviously, he didn't know the language.

He got in a lot of fights at school. He ended up spending some time in Iowa

because the fights were so bad. He came back home and then finally he started

training later in his team. years. So I honestly think he just doesn't know

because it wasn't in front of his face. And now he's like, well, I've come this

far without watching it. What do I need to watch it for now?

He's certainly cementing his name, though, with some of those flyweight

greats. And certainly the most fruitful thing he can probably do would be to

watch himself as he tries to get better. What are your thoughts on Alexandre

Pantoja? I thought the fighter meeting was particularly encouraging, right? No

surgery said he was doing handstands two months in, but he's still only nine or

10 months removed from a pretty debilitating injury.

No, absolutely. I love the fact that he was even doing handstands. Like, when's

the last time you did a handstand? I was a gymnast. I can't even think of the

last time I was doing a handstand. But anyway, the fact that he was doing

handstands two months later and didn't need surgery, they elected to instead

kind of immobilize the arm. It was very swollen after the injury. And then once

that swelling went down, he dove into physical therapy, you know, with all his

might. As you can see, they're working out. He said, I worked out every other

part of my body. And a lot of times, as those guys on the stage can attest, When

you give your body some time to rest, the rest of those nagging injuries to

recover, you come back a very whole fighter.

And we know Pantoja as this soft-spoken guy. He calls himself the cannibal

inside the octagon. But man, I really think he's fired up about this one. He's

got something to prove, and he kind of wants to represent for his generation of

fighter. Yeah.

All right, nicely done, Megan. We know you got to go emcee the weigh-in, but we

will see you shortly. Thank you so much. Hey, you and Megan, y'all bring some

class to this show, man. I mean, you're much better than Helly, because Helly is

just garbage.

It's like, this dude Helly, man, he belong with me and Weidman. You and

Megan class this joint up, man. Well, thank you. I'm just a scab filling in

today. It's so interesting, Pantoja, though, because he is so classy, right?

But there are certain sound bites where you see sort of...

his other side, right? He's like, you think I'm going to let this Japanese guy

come in here and take my belt? Or you proud of me now, Dad? He definitely has

an edge to him.

And it's been pretty emotional this week. We want to talk about the

injuries, right?

No surgery, pretty encouraging. But what do you think he had to sort of go

through to mentally get back to the press? Yeah, I mean, at the end of the

day, he lost his title because of an injury.

But before that happened, he was on this amazing run where you really started to

see him.

Have this confidence of a champion this aura that he brought he had two finishes

in a row before this fight happened And I think he has to just do a good job of

going back to the mindset that he had when he was a champion You know, he lost

his belt, but he has to come to this fight like a winner. He obviously has a

chip on his shoulder because Van comes in, thinks he beat him. He's talking

about beating his ass again.

And in his head, he's getting pretty emotional because he doesn't feel like

he really lost that fight. There wasn't really much that happened. It was kind

of a freak injury.

And at the end of the day, the injury was pretty bad, but he didn't have to

have any surgery. So I think he's going to be all right.

All the questions give way to answers on Saturday night, but Pantoja seems to be

in a great place. Yeah, 100%. Listen, you can call it a fluke, you can call it

fate, call it destiny, whatever.

Joshua Vann is now the champion of the world.

Pantoja feels that the fight never really unfolded, and I agree with him,

but coming into this, he's got a chip on his shoulder, he sees Joshua Vann

walking around, he's kind of chirping up a bit these days,

he's puffing out his chest, he's talking a little bit of crap and beef.

You know, he's talking a lot of trash, shall we say. So Pantoja's ready to come

in here and right the wrongs, teach this kid a lesson, take him down, choke him

out, and, you know, deal up, dish up some revenge.

Yeah.

We've crossed 9 o'clock local time. I am told that Alexandre Pantoja will be the

second man to weigh in. Mauricio Hufi is down there. But, dude, this flyweight

fight is all the rage with me. I can't wait. Well, honestly, it's one of the...

bigger ones that we have seen in a really long time because of the

difference in the approach from Joshua Vann, right? It might be annoying to

Alessandri Pantoja, but it has drawn up some interest.

It's made people pay attention to these two. He went in there yesterday dressed

like a samurai.

Yeah. Was that a suit? What was he wearing, a gi? I can't figure out what

he was wearing, but he seemed to be annoying the great champion Pantoja.

Now, they have fought each other before. Granted, it was a very short period of

time. Pantoja felt like he took something from that.

He felt like landing the head kick. Heard Joshua Vann. Vann said he felt his

aggressiveness. It doesn't take long to get a read as to what you will feel. And

if we see anything like what we saw that first fight starting to be, it's going

to be amazing.

All right. Right now, Joshua Vann is a slight betting favorite. Of course, we

expect two-way action leading right up to fight night. But we're ready to go

with the official UFC 331 weigh-in. And Mauricio Hufi.

We'll be first.

I love watching this guy compete.

I mean, the striking that he has is phenomenal. But this fight's pretty

obvious. Hold on, let's have a listen.

Yeah, this fight's pretty obvious.

Can he stop? 155.

As the fighter, though, it doesn't matter how much you are under 156. When

it goes down, be like, yo, let me go. Yeah, yeah, yeah. I'm good. I made the

weight. Let me get off the scale. But it all comes down to can he stop the

takedown. If he stops the takedown, I think he can knock out Armin Sarrikin

quite comfortably. I think he makes anybody uncomfortable on the feet.

100%. And training with Volkanovski. Yeah. You know, linking up with him.

Look at the fight that he had with Islam Makachev, the first one. Look at all the

experience that Volkanovski can pass down to him.

is a really smart move.

100%. Here we go.

Man, he was on such a good run until that unfortunate injury.

He is shredded. He's one of these guys who could do it all.

He looks great. It's going to be, you know, for a long time, people didn't

care about the flyweights. And I love, even though he had this injury, it just

created this atmosphere, this chip on the shoulder for both guys. This dude is

in shape.

Shout out to the trainer of the year, Everton Oliveira, right? I mean, we've

never seen... Pantoja looks in shape. My goodness.

Up next, the other half of our lightweight co-main event, Armand

Tsurukian.

Armand Tsurukian, he's on a five-fight win streak. He was the number one

contender last year, was supposed to fight Issam Makachev. Hurt his back,

unfortunately. Was it the day of or the day before the fight? The day before,

yeah. And lost that opportunity.

Comes back, fights Dan Hooker, and then after that Dan Hooker fight, he's become

a star on social media as an influencer.

He's the master of the side quest.

Well, he's been doing everything to try to make himself so relevant that it

doesn't matter.

if he didn't take that fight last year. They have no choice but to give him this

opportunity. He feels he will get it. He's been the number one contender for

about two years.

He's been the guy in waiting for a very long time.

Well, because if you thought that he didn't make, like, had issues with the

weight the last time, he made the weight as a backup and fought this fight.

Good. So KC O'Neal, I was just with her in the elevator at the...

the hotel, and she was just speaking about how much she is loving downtown

LA. She said, I have seen some crazy stuff on the streets of downtown LA. She

goes, I had been to Huntington Beach.

125 even. 125. She said, I had been in Southern California, but never downtown.

She goes, it's wild.

And she goes, I am so happy I get to compete in this big city and really show

my skills on such a grand stage. But more than anything, she's just enjoying

being in Los Angeles.

Yeah, I love it.

Bruno, one of the more scary guys on the feet in the division. He is shorter for

the weight. He is the Hulk for a reason because when he gets inside the pocket,

he puts people's lights out.

I would say it's kind of between him and Joe Pfeiffer as being the hardest

hitters in the middleweight division.

Wow. Oh, that's a big shout. Right? Like, I don't know who else really is on

that level. I mean, Joe Pfeiffer certainly springs to mind.

Gaultier, you know, he's got to be up there.

184.5 for Bruno Fajita. But he's going to be giving up the reach to Edmund

Shabazian for sure, but he gets inside that pocket, it's a problem.

Oh, yeah, he swings.

Look like Fajita grew out the hair for this one.

So this one's got a little personal between these two with Casey O'Neal.

They've been going back and forth on the old DMs, talking a bit of trash.

So they're fired up for this one. Seven first-round finishes for Mota.

Nice striking, good finish rate.

Yeah, she's made weight. You see the commission nodding in the background

there. That means scale, right. That scale drops.

And what an opportunity for all these women in the flyweight division right

now. Oh, yeah. Up next in the middleweight division, Edmund Shabazian.

Edmund, he's only 28 years old. He made his debut in the UFC at 20 years old, so

eight years ago. And I remember when he first came on the scene, there was a lot

of hype behind him because Ronda Rousey was really pegging him as the next star

in the UFC.

And he really is so good technically. He doesn't really have an area that he's

not great at.

And he was on a three-fight winning streak just recently. He lost to Brendan

Allen in a decision.

Brendan Allen's ranked number five. So he's a guy who can compete with anybody.

Up next in the light heavyweight division, the number 14 ranked Alonzo

Mennefield. Alonzo Mennefield's a guy that, oh, wow. You know, he's from here,

obviously. So you see maybe some of his family made it to the weigh-ins. But

Mennefield is a guy that's been around for a while, has had some ups and some

downs. But the last fight, right, fighting up-and-comers is kind of what

he is doing now. And you saw in the last fight that when he's on his game, he can

give anyone problems.

Two or five and a half.

Big knockout last time.

Gets a fighter in evil that is going to come forward.

That's the type of guy that he can put out.

This is a great way to kick off the main card.

This fight is going to be absolutely ridiculous.

Up next in the heavyweight division is Tye Tuivasa.

Anytime Tye Tuivasa is in a fight, it's a must watch.

One of the biggest fan favorites of the sport over the last ten years.

But this is a high-pressure fight for him. He needs to get back on track.

He trained that American top team for this one, made a big change leaving

Australia.

And I don't know if we're going to have to worry about him making weight.

I know he does. I don't know.

He cuts quite a lot.

He gets big. He kind of does look sucked out a little bit.

Makes the weight. And now he's got to, he's got to. He's now training at

American Top Team.

He's training at American Top Team now, living in Florida, so.

Make the changes that you need to make.

Yeah, he was training in Dubai and living there for the longest time. A lot

of distractions.

You have to do. A lot of partying. If you lost seven fights in a row, you got

to do something.

Right? I mean, you gotta make changes. You gotta make yourself uncomfortable.

Go somewhere outside your comfort zone for sure. Hey, let me tell you something

about Duho Choi, man. This dude right here is fun.

He loves to fight. He brings it every single time he's inside the octagon.

He kinda, you know how old Duho Choi is? No.

34 years old.

He looks what, 21 years old? I know.

How old is this guy? She goes 34. I go, no chance.

Anyhow, he looks like a baby.

But he is like a baby face killer, man. He can shut your lights out with his

hands. He is a tremendous striker.

Big power. He can do everything inside the aisle. And honestly, just one of the

most fun guys we get to cover inside of the UFC.

All right, so here's Marlon Chidovera, Michael Bisping's former teammate, no

longer training under the watchful eyes of Jason Perrillo. He's still only 33

years of age. Now Raul Rosa Sr.

will be in his corner, but...

Chido looking to avoid a fifth successive loss this weekend as he takes

on Charles Jourdain. Yeah, obviously under a lot of pressure here, but even

in every single one of those fights.

He had the ability to win them. He's just a slow starter.

But in the third round, he kind of steps on the gas, hurts them, wobbles them,

causes some real damage. He's just got to go for the kill from the opening

bell. Fortunately,

Charles Jordan is going to come right at him. So that might favor him. Just to be

traditional, like for it to be your traditionally slow starter, and it just

happens every time. For him to recognize it, know it, and still hasn't had the

ability to not. No, but that's all they worked on in training camp.

Hey, so Jusang Yoo is, obviously he's a tremendous young fighter, now training

full-time with the Korean Zombie.

Felt like he just needed to be around him more. Bro, this dude talks solo.

You can't hear him? Bro, we were in the fighter meeting, and he was speaking.

You and I were right next to each other. The translator's like...

I mean, they're literally sitting next to each other. Translator's like, a

little bit louder. He was talking so low.

Translator couldn't hear him. And so I asked the zombie about that. I go, but

he's a killer in the octagon. He goes, it's amazing, isn't it? I was like, yes.

It's crazy.

Yeah, this guy used to work hard labor, carrying stones around and just working

on the building site and stuff like that. Started training mixed martial

arts for fun. And now we see him. This man is a straight up killer.

In the first round, he's got massive power, taking on Giga Chikadze.

Giga, obviously, might have a speed advantage, but when this guy goes to

work, man, he is very dangerous.

He just pushed on the scale. Yeah, yeah, yeah.

Got his hand slapped.

Try to do DC with no... No, he didn't. Stop that, stop that.

145.5. Yeah, Giga's going to have to watch it in the first round. This guy is

dangerous, man.

All right, so here's the legendary Patricio Pitbull, and if you do account

for all tournament fights, this man has taken part in 19 title fights as a

professional MMA athlete. When he got to the UFC, he said he was here to be the

champion, and if he loses here as a pretty big underdog to do Ho Choi, he

will be one and three in the UFC, and that dream will be dead with finality.

So, must win doesn't even begin to describe it for Pitbull this week.

Output. That is what he is missing.

He's just not throwing enough. Yep.

Yep. He waits way too much, man. I don't know.

For a guy that was known as such an explosive, crazy fighter in Bellator,

for him to come here and be as reserved as he has been is wild. You know why?

He's 39 years old. You get used to that environment. You get used to being in an

octagon. The nerves, they're long gone now. He's 39 years old. This is just

another day in the office. He's going to find that young fighter inside himself.

Now, this guy, he's the opposite. I mean, last time out.

Against Ellison, he was swinging like a maniac. He was a little raw, a little

crazy, but he did get a finish in the second round. Well, the fact that he

didn't wrestle is crazy. No, take that. I like that he didn't wrestle. Well,

yeah, of course he did. It shows something. But I'm saying, for a guy

that has that as his ace in the pocket, To not use it, especially early.

240 for Gable Stevens. He used to weigh 260. Yeah, but I lied that he didn't do

that. What did he weigh?

240. So he's way smaller now. Yeah, he used to be 260.

MMA leaned him up. He got way small.

He told Daniel he's having a hard time putting the weight back on.

Next up in the middleweight division, Ozzy Diaz. What's up, guys? Ozzy Diaz

here, fighting out of downtown Los Angeles.

I'm expecting a quick fight. How long do you guys think this fight will last?

Well, you got to think that these two guys are going to go after each other.

Look, Ozzy Diaz is a guy.

186 for Ozzy Diaz. That ran into Octavo Gaultier last time. So, obviously, it

did not go in the way that he planned. But in that fight, he showed that

regardless of the challenge, he's willing to go forward and try to fight.

And I think that's what makes Ozzy Diaz so fun. Michael Aswell,

Just wondering if you want to talk about it a little bit with the team.

When the coaches found me? What were you doing? You probably don't remember. I

don't know what he's talking about. Oh, my God, Mikey.

When they found me, I'm trying to think. Listen, I've been hitting the head a

lot. Right?

I'm trying to think when the coaches found me. Oh, my. And you've had a lot

of good nights in London.

No, no, no, no, no. When I'm in London with the UFC, it's all business, okay?

I even throw a couple pints back in London. I feel like it's what we're

supposed to do.

You got to go to. You got to go to.

I don't know what he's talking about. Let's get into Gable Steveson for a

second here, if we could, as we await some of the next athletes. So going into

his UFC debut against Elijah Ellison, we sat down with Elijah and we said, what's

it like to be the guy who gets tabbed to fight this guy?

Sean Sheriff really seems excited about what's in front of him this weekend. But

what do you make of Gable?

Making a relatively quick turnaround here, champ. I think that in that first

fight, we saw, or at least I saw, he's a little bit further than I thought

in his MMA development.

I thought that we would see a guy that would predominantly use his wrestling to

try to get this fight to the ground as soon as he could to try to overwhelm the

person in the grapple. He did none of that.

He struck.

And while some of it might have been wild, I was impressed with his ability

to find his shots. Also, that front kick, that snappy front kick that he was

throwing time and time again was very impressive. I believe that after

watching Gable Steveson in his debut, get excited.

Because of what we have seen Josh Hokid do, Gable Steveson seems to have the

ability to do it just as fast with the way the heavyweight division is at its

current standing.

When you get a wrestler that comes in, just because you're an amazing wrestler

doesn't mean you're going to be a great fighter. A lot of wrestlers don't feel

comfortable getting punched in the face. You know, you could see right away as

they start sparring the first couple times, they're very hesitant to throw

because they're so, you know, they're kind of like flinching the whole time.

They're worried about.

And to see Gable Stevenson come to the UFC so early in his MMA career and walk

across the octagon and throw punches, not being afraid to get punched in the

face is huge for him. He's still green. He's still working on things. But that

was the biggest thing as a coach that you would want to see in your wrestling

athlete be able to do. But, Mike, is that because the guy didn't give much

back to him? No. Imagine him get – is he going to be okay when he gets – cracked

with one. We saw him get hit with that spinning kick before.

Yeah, yeah, that's right. But he came back and he still won the fight

dramatically. I love the fact that he didn't wrestle. He went out there. He

used his skills. He didn't just have a front kick. He had a stomping kick to

the knees. He had head kicks. There was a lot of kicks. He was switching stances

as well. So he's trying out his skills. He's developing as a mixed martial

artist. The wrestling will always be there in the back pocket. I think there

was one kind of takedown-ish attempt which failed to your point because

taking people down, against the cage is a lot different than on a wrestling mat.

Yes, and you could see the reason why I think it failed. The guy kind of went

like he was going for a guillotine.

So he bailed. He bailed a little early. The more you get comfortable with taking

people down and dealing with chokes.

you're not going to bail on that. You know, you're going to go through it. The

right way to deal with someone around your neck is to finish the right way.

And as you pull out, you kind of show a little bit of insecurity and your

greenness when you do that. But just like with Josh Hokey, we're talking

about 240 pounds. I was watching the fight last night. It was two and a half

minutes, something like that. It was non-stop output.

It was constant attacking, switching stances, throwing kicks, swinging. Yeah,

they were reckless. Yeah, there was openings for counters.

But the output was very impressive. The aggression was lovely.

I thought it was a really good debut and a lot to build off and improve from that

as well. I mean, does Shaun Charaf have enough to test him? Does he have more on

his feet?

It was that Hokit and Curtis Blades fight. I think that just sparked that

division on fire.

Once that fight happened, one of the greatest fights of the year.

was. It was moving before that. Well, Aspinall was a question mark already at

that point. Yeah, but I'm saying Gondra.

I'm ready to go. I have to make the weight.

And I'm ready to conquer my belt one more time.

You know, so much has made of the interpersonal relationship between you

and Joshua Vann. But in terms of Vann as a fighter, in terms of the physical

challenge that you are going to confront this weekend, what is the area of focus

when it comes to beating a fighter like Joshua Vann?

That's what I want. I want to fight with the best fighters in the world. Joshua

Vann proved that.

And he's very skilled in the strike zone.

But I love striking since my born, you know.

I think I'm ready to strike with whatever fighter.

And I don't know if every fighter is ready to my grappling game too. That's

MMA.

And of course now he's had a title defense as well against Tatsu Rotara. Do

you think this version of Joshua Vann that you're facing is a better version

than what you went up against a year ago?

Yeah, 100%. But I'm a champion five times. You can plus this five times too,

you know.

That's who I am. Actually, six times. And then I have my seventh title fight

tomorrow night.

And I know 100% I'm a better man. I'm a better fighter.

Pantoja, what's going on?

Do you feel like, you've had so many title fights before, does this one feel

different? Because it seems like there's more emotion, there's a little bit more

trash talk.

He's acting like, he's feeling himself a little bit. Does this irritate you? Does

this feel different than your other title fights?

Yeah, you can see annoying, yeah?

I feel too.

Yeah, but every fight is different.

It's never the same one, and I'm not the same guy.

I'm very mature now, you know. I'm a father of the two kids.

I know how to teach a kid a good mood.

And tomorrow night, I'm glad this kid's not mine because he's going to suffer.

He told me that the other day in our interview. So, champ, you know, you have

done this on so many different occasions now.

This time you're going as a challenger for the first time in a long time.

What do you do with the rest of the day? How do you reset yourself as you try to

rehydrate, try to get fuel into your body and ready for the performance

tomorrow night? What does the rest of the afternoon look like for you?

I have my wife here. She cook for me. She bring my food from my home.

And I have my kids to enjoy.

I have my coaches. I have my coach Macarron. He make me laugh all the time.

My kids love him.

Do you enjoy having your family here on a Friday to kind of get your mind away

before, Carlos Protes, Alex Pineda, Alexandre Pantoja. But pound for pound,

the best mixed martial arts athlete in the UFC right now out of Brazil champ is

not Alex Pineda. It's Charles Oliveira. Yeah, Charles Oliveira is tremendous.

And we all love Dubronks. Like, he's the best. We all are fans of him. But again,

Charles Oliveira was... the great UFC lightweight champion and only the

lightweight champion. He fought at featherweight, but he was not the

champion. Alex Ferreira was the middleweight champion, the light

heavyweight champion, and worked his way.

and got to fight for the heavyweight title. He was the one person that had a

chance to be a three-division champion.

And he's also one of the biggest names in the sport and one of the biggest

stars, and rightly so, because I absolutely love watching him fight, and

I love the style that he brings to the octagon.

But, however, the lineage, everything that Charles Oliveira accomplished, the

most bonuses. I can't believe we could argue a guy that was a double champion

as not the greatest in the country right now. Because you're arguing a different

criteria. This is open to interpretation. What do you think?

Charles Oliveira has more fucking calf slicers than Poiton has. We can swear.

But that probably is even more impressive.

Pereira has done that in so much little less time than Charles Oliveira. I think

we're splitting hairs a little bit. If Alex Pereira would have won that night

against you real time, it's the greatest of all time.

What was it like to feel all that love yesterday at the presser?

I felt great.

It's like my second hometown, you know? That's why I feel great.

So you've fought a lot of different stylists in the UFC.

When you and your team break down Mauricio Hufi, what is the biggest

challenge in beating somebody on this level?

He's awkward boxing.

So that's the most challenging thing.

Armin. You know, one of the things, the interesting things about Armin Sorokin

is when you're eating.

What do you have this afternoon? Are you making an eating video this afternoon or

does it have to wait till after the fight? I mean, are you making an eating?

You might go uber viral for an eating video with the way that you look like

sucked down right now. You got to make an eating video.

You're taking my time, so I want to go right away and make a video.

Armin, tell me what's on the menu. Tell the big boy what you got to eat.

How much different does this feel? Because in all those events, you did

press conferences and all that stuff, but just yesterday with the press

conference, does it feel different being back in the UFC?

Yeah, it's different because it's, like, my main job, you know? And I took... I

take so seriously this. This is my dream to become a UFC champion, and...

I give all myself to this sport and I'm ready 100%. There's a

lot of talk about Hufi going to work with Alexander Volkanovski, learning how

to wrestle better.

Do you think with that amount of time with Alex, there's going to be a big

difference in his ability to stop takedowns and not have what happened to

him against BSD?

I mean, definitely he could learn something new how to defend.

But like when you go in the deep water and like second, third takedown

is... Yeah, he can defend first takedown. I can change from the double

to single, from the single to the body. Yeah, he can like defend my first move,

but second move is impossible.

You know, for one year you cannot learn how to wrestle very well. You can learn

how to defend a couple takedowns, but...

It's like boxing.

You cannot learn how to box in one year.

Orman, I love the shades.

Let me ask you, there's been a lot of noise this week on social media. Ilya

Toporia came back making accusations to Justin Gagey. They've been going back

and forth.

Does that put an extra little bit of pressure on you to get this done in

style, to finish him solidly, make an example out of Hufi to really cement

your title shot?

I don't think about Eli Tapura right now. I'm like, yeah, of course I got to

go and show good performance and finish Mauricio Rufi.

And there is no doubt that I'm fighting for the title next.

Armand, I know yesterday at the press conference you predicted a round two

finish. Is that what you're standing by? You think you get Mauricio Rufi out of

there inside 10 minutes tomorrow?

It's a second or third round finish. First round, I'm going to check where

he's going to defend my takedowns. And the second round, I already know where

he's good, where he's not.

And I'm going to find my key in the second or third round.

about just learning to wrestle six months prior to his UFC debut.

I spent a few weeks there. The food is incredible. Really.

Charles Jourdain, he was at featherweight, comes down to

bantamweight. He's on a three-fight win streak.

He's probably got the craziest flying knees in the UFC.

It's not just one here and there. He'll constantly be looking for it. He had a

crazy knockout. I think it was over Davey Grant with the flying knee.

Very dynamic striker.

It's going to be a good fight. We talked to Jourdain at the fighter meeting, and

this dude been getting bonuses, bought a new house, having another kid.

His life, like...

A lot of people switch weights, and it's like desperation because things started

going wrong.

It's all going good for Charles Jourdain since he went down to 135.

All right, two fighters left to weigh in, Robelis Despain and Ivo Baranewski,

who is a Polish light heavyweight that would appear to be a real problem. I

also thought it was interesting in our meeting with Charles Jourdain, he

mentioned his son Hector, right? And certain fighters don't necessarily...

see procreation as an extra source of motivation.

Like Sean O'Malley, when he had his daughter, was like, I was doing this for

me to begin with, right? But for Charles, he said in our fighter meeting,

fighting for myself wasn't enough.

Yeah, of course.

Well, no, no, when my kids came along, that's when I decided, what am I going

to do with my life? Take it serious. I want to give them the best life

possible. I was messing around. I was partying. I was getting into, you know,

bar fights and stuff like that. When the kids came along, it's like, okay, grow

up, get my act together, figure this shit out.

Instead of five bar fights a week, like maybe one or two. You know.

you got punched. Ever since you've got kids, you got punched in the face in the

streets. You ain't got to make me sound like a pussy, Chris.

I did. I got punched in the face.

And you walked away. And you were proud of yourself. That is one of your most

mature moments. When the guy punched me, literally, and my reaction, I laughed my

head off. It was the most pathetic punch ever. I went, bro.

I'm like, forget it. I'm walking away. I've got my kids. There was a gang of

them as well. Someone had a weapon or a knife. And you had a bad situation in

Bulgaria as well. You've been in some situations.

We got some rapid-fire questions for UFC 331. We're going to reel it back in a

All right, next question. How much did Joshua Vann's win over Tatsuro Taira

change how you think about this fight against Pantos? Massively.

Seeing what he was able to overcome, seeing him take him down and be mounted,

but escape, survive, get back to his feet, and then slowly but surely start

to take over. I think that has made him a way better fighter. And again, to go

back to the point, he's only 24 years old. He's got a solid team around him.

He is growing exponentially all the time. And that fight helped him reach

the next level.

I agree with you in some ways, but I also do think...

Pantoja sees that fight. He sees Tatsuo Taira mount him multiple times. And

granted, he did a great job again, butterfly hooks, getting back up to his

feet, pushing through and getting the finish.

But I think Pantoja sees that like a shark with blood in the water. He gets

the mount. He takes the back. It's probably game over. But this is good,

though, for them because he's got a really solid team of coaches around him.

And they've been back and they have watched that fight. They've obsessed

over it every single time. Said, right, here's what you're doing wrong there.

You're giving up a position here. This is why he mounted you. This is how he

was able to take you down. So there's a lot of data to analyze and to improve

off. I agree with that. Yeah, but he's gonna have to make those adjustments.

If those adjustments aren't made going into this fight, if he fights the same

way he fought against Tatsuya Taira, I don't think it's good.

I think he's better now for that fight. I think you have to be. He showed and

dealt with some of the positions and issues he will see versus Pantoja, and

you only get better when you experience something.

boys. When I tell you this man beat the crap out of Juju Dos Santos, it was

nuts. All the fights that he's won, that is what he's done. One shot from this

guy is all it takes.

Taekwondo credentials for days.

But let me ask you a question, though.

In his UFC running originally, he struggled when they didn't go down.

When they didn't go down. Yeah. He only fought once since he left in MMA, and it

was another fast knockout. Like, how do we know that he's done anything to

change if they extend him into a fight? If we believe him, he said this year,

this week, over the last two years, he has massively improved his all-around

mixed martial arts. I understand, but it's like... That's what you say. Right,

John? That's what you say. It was the same exact fight as we saw. But if you

come to the UFC... You get taken down, you get held down, you can't operate

unless you're an absolute fool, you focus on Harry. How many guys do you

see, though, that actually make that change?

We see so many guys that can't defend takedowns for their whole career, and

they never learn to defend takedowns. Well, the good thing is it gets tied to

Ovasso. I don't think we're going to see him make that change. But again, if he

is to win this fight, right, J.A., and if he's to knock Ty out, and he does it

early, I'm not saying it's going to happen.

We still don't know what happens whenever he fights a guy that stands up

from him knocking him in the head. Well, and I think a lot of people are

expectant that if either fighter in this heavyweight matchup pursues a takedown,

it will be Tui Vassa. But Despain was talking wrestling our entire fighter. He

did. And that wasn't even in the fight. He did. You know what I'm saying? You

listen to the guy for 30 minutes.

But I'm honestly not a person that actually wrestling is so hard.

that guys tend to want to go away from doing it because it sucks so much. I'm

not calling him a liar. I don't know. Until I see it, man, until I see it, I

got to see it to believe it. All right, I'm going to leave with you on this next

question if I can. How much pressure? Come save, believe, achieve.

How much pressure is on Armand Sargian to win impressively against Mauricio

Hooper? All the pressure. Just because Patty Pimlin looks so good and with Ilya

coming back.

Whether he wants to acknowledge it or not, that's a problem. He needs to look

impressive if he wants a title fight. Yeah.

Unfortunately for him, with Teporia coming out this week, getting on social

media, changing the tune, it's like a shadow over Armand right now. He needs

an impressive win.

100%. He needs a finish.

He needs to do it in style.

He needs to make noise on the microphone. I know he's got Nina Drama

and Neon, so he's got that social media, younger demographical kind of channeled

in. But with Paddy and with Ilya, he's got to do something special. And

remember, Dan Hooker was able to connect on him. If he goes out there and both

guys are tentative and he wins a decision, that isn't going to do it. The

good thing for him is that people want to see Ilya fight Paddy really bad

because of their history.

different weight class. However, the guy that he beat was severely disabled with

one eye. He had torn ribs. And the odds were just stacked against him. So it

made it a little easy for George. Other than that, it's a good Hollywood ending.
