[Driver] Yo, young man, take a seat.
Okay, off the bus now!
[Man] Previously on Route 187.
Heard he got attacked on the bus.
He was assaulted by a gang of thugs.
[people shocked]
People call it 187. It's dangerous.
-[Mason] T-Jay. -It's the news reporter.
What news paper you work for again?
The South Winslow Times.
[T-Jay] Word on the street is
black girls been coming up missing.
[Woman] Yes, ma'am?
You have several calls from your son's phone.
He said it's urgent.
Your son has life-threatening injuries.
Oh, my God. I can't breathe.
I can't breathe. I can't breathe.
[anxious music]
Is that for my son?
Folks, please clear the area.
Dad's in cardiac arrest.
We sure fucked up, bro.
Straight up.
Straight, straight, straight.
Man.
Fucked up, man.
Oh, shit, it's the police. Run!
Come on!
Oh, shit. Come on. Fuck!
* When I was young It was rough *
* Didn't know how little I had *
* I walked the streets of the city *
* Saw what happens when a life goes bad *
* Every day my pop would say *
* Go away and don't look back *
* So I left to find my dream *
* But this is where my heart is at *
* Yeah-ah-ah *
* In the city's rain is where I see things *
* And the mess it makes *
* On the streets *
* No shield for me I keep walking *
* Just like grass grows out of the stone looks like me *
* It keeps growing out of old concrete *
* Yeah, yeah *
* Looks like me Oh *
* Oh Lord, I said it looks like me *
-* Looks like me * -* Oh yeah
* I'm trying to see me *
* Hmm, mm, mm, In South Winslow *
Shit.
We lost him.
Nigga, why did you run?
What you mean? I saw the police.
He wasn't looking at you
till you stupid ass started running!
My bad, man, chill.
Fuck.
Come on, man.
[murmurs]
That was Terrell's bus driver.
Terrell's bus driver?
He went off the bus to help Terrell when he was jumped.
Yeah, those damn thugs turned on him
when he was trying to save Terrell's life.
Save his life?
I need to see... I need to go see my son!
No, no, no! No, let me go!
Get your hands off me! I need to see my son!
[Lowe] He's in surgery.
I need to see, I need to see my son!
Please, I need...
Please, clear this area out. Please.
[Lowe] Lisa, he's in surgery.
Oh, my... Please! Oh, God, no!
-He's in surgery. -Oh, God!
[sobbing] My baby.
Oh, shit, come on.
Just keep walking, just keep walking.
Come on, come on, come on.
Man.
Heyo, good looking on the food, Ro.
It's all good. You know how we do.
Man, now I got you back when I got the cash.
Hey, real talk.
You know, if you come hang with me,
you'll have some cash.
Yeah, I hear you. It's just...
I don't know. I should get going, though.
[Roshawn] Yo, yo.
[William] What's up?
Nigga.
Don't take the bus tomorrow.
Oh, yeah. Okay.
[big sigh]
[Bea] Who that coming in my door?
It's me.
[Bea] Lock my door!
-[Kevin] William! -Hey, little man.
Come here.
-You hungry? -Yeah.
Yeah, I got you and Pop-Pop something to eat.
There you go.
You want some of this?
Look, you eat first, all right?
You know, if your stomach is full
and something left over, then save some for me.
You ain't eat? I'll save you some.
Nigga, eat. Is Pop-Pop awake?
[Kevin] Yeah.
[William] Yo, Pop-Pop?
[knocking on door]
[knocking on door] Pop-Pop.
What you sitting in the dark for, man?
I got you something to eat.
What is that smell?
Use the bathroom?
I got you.
Gotta get you cleaned up.
I got you Pop-Pop.
[moaning]
[indistinct arguing]
What's that?
[indistinct arguing]
I'm sure it's my son.
Arguing with this new girl he's seeing.
Who, Mick?
Yeah, Mick.
What about your other son?
[Finley] What about him?
[Amelia] Well, you never really talk about him.
Jake?
Dances to the beat of his own drum.
I saw your wife today.
Where?
[Amelia] At school.
Yeah, just for the record, she's my soon-to-be ex-wife.
Yeah, she doesn't know me.
Okay, good.
Let's keep it that way.
Like, don't go join her class or nothing.
Ah, please.
Although, I did hear that she is
an excellent criminal justice professor.
I'm sure she is.
Kathy takes her job serious.
She takes everything serious.
That's her problem.
Yeah. So why didn't you guys work out?
Amelia...
Okay. I gotta go.
Yeah.
I'm gonna go see what the hell is up with those two down there.
It's not about you hanging out with your friends, Mick.
No, it's about you being so fucking insecure
-all the fucking time. -Don't curse at me.
Mick, don't talk to her like that.
What the hell are you two arguing about?
Fuck if I know!
[Aubrey] I'm sorry, Mr. McGregor.
[Finley] What's the problem?
I think I'm gonna go.
Mick, walk Aubrey to her car.
Your dad has to tell you?
[Mick] Look, are you coming or not?
[cellphone ringing]
You know, I was almost impressed
I made it almost an entire day.
Yeah.
What is it?
Okay, on my way.
[Mick] Don't leave... Aubrey! Fuck, dude!
Mick!
Hey.
It's not good for you and that girl
to be arguing all the time.
She gets on my nerves, Dad.
[Finley] Well, end it.
She's too high-strung for you anyway.
-[Mick] I know. I know. -You need someone laidback.
All that arguing, it's not good.
For anyone, okay?
I see this shit every day.
Those arguments lead to physical fights,
and with your temper, it's not good.
[Mick] I hear you. I thought you were off today.
I got called in.
[Mick] Shit, another murder?
[Finley] Yeah.
[Mick] South Winslow?
Yeah, where else?
Some incident on a city bus.
[Mick] Life of a detective.
Hey, have you seen your brother?
Jake? Who knows?
He gets weirder by the day, Dad.
Stop it. Just tell him to call me.
Okay.
So your lady, she looks like she's my age.
Mick.
I saw her trying to rush out, take the walk of shame.
Mick, you talk too much.
Why you get to talk to me about my woman,
-but I can't mention yours? -Goodnight, Mick.
Good night, Dad.
Hey, Ms. Brown.
Mr. Reporter.
Seems like this place is full of activity this evening.
[Brown] Yeah, it's been busy.
-Tell me. -You see him?
[Brown] Just follow him.
He's a homicide detective.
Thank you, doctor,
for all you did to try to save my husband.
[Doctor] I am so sorry for your loss.
Thank you.
Mrs. Crawford?
Yes.
[Finley] Hi, I'm Detective Finley McGregor.
Yes?
I'm so sorry for your loss.
I was hoping to have a word with you.
[Theresa] Not now, detective.
I need to break the news of his passing to my family.
Okay.
[sobbing]
I need you to be strong.
Paul, he didn't make it.
[Betty breaks down]
Earl, please take Betty outside.
I'm sorry, I don't have much time.
I need to drive up north and pick up my daughter.
Um, no one, no one is to call Kennedy.
I will be the one to tell her about her father's death.
Is that clear?
[group] Yes.
[Theresa] Now, I know this is hard on everyone here,
but I need your help right now.
Carl, you should go sit with your mother.
No one should tell Ms. Patty over the phone
that her son is gone.
And take Betty with you when she gets herself together.
You need to be strong for Ms. Patty.
It's gonna break her heart.
Paul Jr... Baby.
Fiona, just go sit with him.
Boy loves his daddy.
I understand this was a random act of violence
by some thugs.
Carolyn, I need you to be
the spokesperson for this family.
Okay.
There are cops gathering outside.
Just talk to them for me,
and I suspect maybe even the media
if news of this gets out.
And, Carolyn, can you call WTA.
I'll text you the number.
Let his supervisor, um, Albert Riley, know
that Paul passed.
Yes, ma'am.
Daddy, can you please take over down there?
I need to go pick up Kennedy,
and I need to go see about Paul Jr.
Um. Um.
Call Terry at the funeral home.
And make arrangements for them to come...
For them to come pick up my husband.
Okay. Of course. Are you okay, There's...
Move, Daddy, move. Just...
Just do that for me, please, okay? I'm okay.
-Carolyn. -[Caroyln] Yes, Theresa.
Call Pastor.
-Carolyn. -Yes. Who are you?
I'm Mason James. South Winslow Times.
I'm, I'm so sorry.
Thank you.
Got you cleaned up, Pop-Pop. Looking good.
I even put some new linens on the bed.
Come on, it's time to eat.
Come on. Open.
William.
-[William] What's wrong? -Momma at the door.
Fuck! Ain't let her in, did you?
No, but she's climbing through the window.
All right, Kevin, finish feeding Pop.
-What, Momma? -Hey, baby.
[William] What you want?
Why you look like that?
Look like what?
Like you ain't happy to see me, nigga.
Where's little Kevin?
He don't need to see you like this, Mom.
-It upsets him. No. -[Reesie] Tell him to come here.
[Reesie] I wanna talk to him.
[William] Look, don't come around here
all fucked up like that.
Listen, do you wanna see little Kevin?
You gotta get your shit together.
Don't you disrespect me!
Goodbye, Mom.
You got a few dollars? I can buy some food.
I don't have no money, Momma!
[Reesie] Come on, man.
I don't feel like going on that corner tonight.
Just get out of here, Momma, please.
Please!
Us black girls coming up missing.
I can't help you.
You ungrateful motherfucker!
You break my fucking heart, man.
Kevin, go in your room.
Ms. Mims.
Yes?
[Lowe] I better be getting these guys home.
Oh, of course, of course. Thank y'all for coming.
I'll be back tomorrow.
Let me know if you need anything.
Thank you.
-Thank you. -[Lowe] Yeah, yeah.
[sighs]
Be safe.
I'll be back tomorrow.
Thank y'all.
-[Mason] Uh, Ms. Mims. -Yes?
Mason James. South Winslow Times.
I don't know anything.
[Mason] How is your son?
He's in a coma.
[Devon] I don't care! They jumped my brother, man!
Yeah, go get Mack and come swoop me.
[Lisa] Who are you talking to?
-Momma Sims. -[Lisa] Who are you talking to?
-My friend. Nothing. -What are you doing?
You thinking about getting revenge?
I ain't no bitch, Momma Mims.
You ain't no bitch?
I'm sick of you thuggish niggas!
Why are you hitting me?
'Cause this foolishness got your brother in there,
fighting for his life! Take your butt home!
[screams and breaks down] [Mason] Okay.
-Okay. -[Lisa] Oh, God!
My baby!
[somber music]
Oh, my God!
To all my drivers,
tonight, we officially retire the numbers L1064.
They will forever belong to Paul Crawford.
Our fallen comrade.
Rest in peace, old friend.
[groans]
[pained grunts and deep breaths]
[Man] That's not for sure, guaranteed.
Gentlemen, we have a visitor.
Tape from the bus.
It's about time, Captain.
-A disk? -It's an old bus.
We got a drive here somewhere.
[Garcia] Any word on the kid that was assaulted?
No, he's still in a coma over at County General.
[fighting and screaming on recording]
Say hello to our three bad guys.
Coach Lowe.
Yes, sir.
Mason James, South Winslow Times. Hey.
Oh, how can I help you, Mr. James?
I, I wanted to talk to you
about how you and your guys are doing,
considering Terrell Coleman's fighting for his life
at County Hospital.
I, uh, [sighs] think we're all still in shock.
We have a playoff game tonight
and Terrell is my starting point guard.
Will you and your guys play tonight?
Yeah. We will.
We're dedicating this game to, uh...
To Terrell.
I'm sorry, Mr. James. Can we, uh...
-[James] Yeah, I'm sorry. -[Lowe] Yeah.
Hey, Lisa.
[Lisa] Roland.
How is he?
I been here all night.
He hasn't opened his eyes once.
My boy's a fighter. He got this.
You got this.
How are you?
I'm, I'm scared.
We gotta be positive.
I tried to call you several times.
[Roland] I'm sorry.
I'm driving for a new trucking company.
I was up north making a run.
Devon reached me last night.
I caught a flight out this morning.
Did he tell you he's trying to seek some kind of revenge?
[Roland] His momma told me.
That boy ain't gonna do nothing.
He's just traumatized like the rest of us, Lisa.
Tell him to come in here.
[Roland] His momma's here.
That's fine.
-Hey, Lisa. -[Lisa] Hey.
You need anything?
No. Thanks for coming.
[hip-hop music]
* Lights off Hammer's off *
* Make a buck No more acting *
* Grab a gun Now take a breath *
* I ain't have this fan *
* They shed the light on my insanity *
* I need back my clarity *
* Psychos have enabled me *
* They get through life so casually *
* They minimize the casualties Like we're so mundane *
* Yeah keeps away my pain But they talking shit *
[players cheering]
[Lowe] Hey, fellas, fellas, bring it in.
Hey, listen, uh...
[cellphone ringing]
Hello?
What?
Oh, Roland, no.
How am I gonna tell my baby?
Tell me what?
Who is that?
Hello?
Daddy?
No!
[sobbing]
Yeah, come take a look at this shit.
What, nigga?
Police are looking for these three men
in connection with what is now a double murder.
Police are asking that you call the number on the screen
if you have any information about this terrible crime.
In South Winslow, I'm JT Hayward.
[News Reporter] Thanks, JT. The three suspects
that are still at large...
No, that's that nigga Roshawn.
[News Reporter] It all started with a fight on bus route 87.
In other news...
I'ma get that little nigga.
William.
You on TV.
-What? -[Kevin] Your picture.
You, Roshawn, and Darrell.
It says y'all killed two people on a bus.
Listen, Kevin.
I didn't kill nobody.
You believe me?
Come here, give me a hug.
William.
Don't get caught, man.
I need you.
[melancholic piano music]
[Mason] Once upon a time in South Winslow,
the city of faith,
as it's been called for the past 100 years,
symbolized by a beautiful purple flower
we know as the Iris, yes, in that city,
a man and a teenage boy are dead tonight.
It is a cruel irony that the men's lives came to an end
on a bus route we Winslow residents call Route 187.
Today, that bus tragically lived up to its nickname.
Paul and Terrell, their beautiful lights
snuffed out by an endless epidemic of violence
that few can understand and far fewer can stomach.
There will no doubt be candlelight vigils,
dedications, crowded funerals,
where city leaders will pontificate on a microphone
about how senseless the loss.
Sadly, it will end there.
Unless, unless some of us stand up and fight
for this beloved city.
This was to be the last edition of the South Winslow Times.
This newspaper was to be another casualty
of endless city budget cuts
by bureaucrats who have lost their way.
Today, I decided, not on my watch.
A free press is the backbone of any free society.
I will continue to write,
searching for the story behind the story.
I will write for Terrell,
a young man who, today, became a victim
of the social ills plaguing urban America.
I will continue to write for him and for Paul.
[driver] You know, you missed that bus.
You need a ride?
I'm good, thank you.
[Driver] Damn, baby, I don't bite
unless you want me to.
Where you going? Talk to me, baby.
[dramatic stinger]
I'm sorry, what'd you say?
