Fuck I've tried for a long time. I think I came

I

Ain't it cold, cold world?

Outside hot, inside I was cold.

The eyes of...

Ain't it cold, cold world?

Then an old lady asked me about the new daylight time.

Said it don't matter, and she said I don't.

Still ain't it

Hey there

Ma, truck's late again.

It's the second time this week.

We'll be here.

I'll be out back.

You're gonna make some more of that mac and cheese.

Hi. Hi.

Can I have a six-pack of grizzly?

You wanna buy me a beer?

Wanna treat this gentleman?

Sure. Sure.

Sure, get him a can.

Collect rings.

Thank you.

No worries.

That'll be $7.

You boys driving through the reservation?

Yes, ma'am.

Be careful, because you can't take liquor into the reservation.

Oh, that's all right. We're not going to stop.

We're just driving through.

What is this?

Spam?

It's the one.

It's disgusting.

How you doing, Derek?

All right.

Got the week's receipts.

Eli?

Yeah? Salah's here.

Coming.

I need to talk to you about the new part orders.

I'll come over in the next couple of days for that.

My daughter here is still spending an awful amount of time over by my store.

Don't worry about her.

See you later, Derek.

Pa, when I'm done with the car, I'm gonna go see Peter.

Sure.

Let's see her.

Will you please see that our bags are taking out to the stage?

You're talking about the stage in Los Angeles?

Yes, sir. I think that is the name of the little village. You see, my daughter

and I are not so familiar with this part of your country.

But we like it very much.

It's so very beautiful.

Isn't it, Father?

Indeed, my child, it is. And we are looking forward to the rest of our

journey.

There's nothing between here and Los Angeles but 500 miles of dry, hot

desert. But your desert is most remarkable. We have never seen anything

to match its rugged splendor. You'd better wait for the next stage.

We're not taking any passengers in this one.

No, no, no. We cannot wait.

You see, we have made arrangements already at Los Angeles.

There will be a sailing vessel waiting for us, on which we have reservations.

I said no passengers.

Hello, Marshal.

Hello, Cartwright.

You're blocking the door.

Yes, I know.

We've just seen what you did to Dave Walker.

He resisted my efforts in the shack.

Was there any need to chain him to that bed?

Just the need to make sure he didn't escape from that three-bag jail.

What about today?

What'd you do to him?

Cartwright.

Get out of my way.

What's your view on a United States lawyer? The point is, I am.

Joe.

Wake up, son.

Wes? Yeah?

Have you heard this one?

What?

You know that little, uh, that little ever ready bunny?

What happens if you take his batteries out?

You don't know?

It stops.

No.

It keeps coming and coming.

And come in.

See you later, Mama.

See you later, Wes.

Hi, Janie.

Hello, darling.

Hey, Sally.

Morning, Wesley.

You hear some of them Indian hunters been prowling the area over the road.

They found two-skinned Indians across the hill

hanging upside down on a rope.

You seen them hunting Indians, Rosie?

They haven't been around over there on the road to where you live

I Told all the guys over here

not to go out alone unless they go into the reservation

The hunters won't go into the reservation

no They think Indian land

is riskier than a no man's land around here.

You keep your eye open.

You hear?

Sure.

You wanna get me a beer?

I don't have any money.

You want a sip of this?

No.

You want a sip?

No, I'm okay.

Get on home, Rosie.

Keep your system of the students.

What are you doing home?

What's going on, Ray?

Ray?

Floyd's gone, Mama.

They brought the letter earlier today, Mama.

Where's the letter?

Yeah, this is Raymond, the neck claw.

I need to speak to Major Robertson.

Thanks.

Yeah, Raymond, the neck claw.

No, I'm her son.

He's my baby brother.

Floyd's gone, Wes.

Good evening, Mary.

Good evening.

How is he?

Sleeping.

Did you check him before he came back on the reservation?

Yes, I did.

No beer?

No.

Mind if I have a quick look at him?

Go ahead.

Wes? Yeah?

Floyd's gone.

What?

Floyd's gone.

For real?

When? Couple of days ago.

The last I heard from Floyd in Afghanistan was a few weeks ago.

He was his usual self.

He signed off saying, only the idiot and the dead stand by, while who

were young before waged insolent and guilty war.

Crazy, that's right.

God bless your brother's soul, Ray.

Time to cook your guts.

A lump sum gratuitous payment is made by the United States Army to eligible

beneficiaries of a member who dies in active duty, active duty tour, or

international defense training, or full-time National Guard duty.

Its purpose is to help the survivors in their readjustment and to aid them in

meeting immediate expenses incurred.

The death gratuity payment is $12,420 and is non-taxable.

For those whose death is as a result of hostile actions and occurred in a

designated combat operation or combat zone, or while training for combat or

performing hazardous duty, the payment is $100,000.

At this point, I need to discuss something with you.

When your son was killed, he was sent out with his unit for a routine

surveillance check.

The instructions handed out to officers prior to these checks are that under no

circumstances are they to depart from their unit, particularly in volatile

areas such as the one that they were sent to in Bamiyan.

When Captain Deniclaw was shot, he was by himself and he had left his unit. For

a soldier with his experience, his actions were confusing.

His body was discovered by his unit two hours after they last saw him in an area

well known as an enemy stronghold.

As stated in the regulations I just read out to you, the compensation for a

soldier who has died while serving in combat is 100,000 U.S. dollars, while

those who die otherwise are entitled to a compensation of 12,420 U.S. dollars.

Do you see where I'm getting at?

I see where you're getting at, but I don't know why you wouldn't be getting

there.

With all due respect, there is an $87,580 difference here between the two

types of compensation.

We need to be sure that Captain Deniclaw's death falls into the category

of those who died in combat.

What does that mean?

Are you saying he got himself killed on purpose?

I'm saying we wouldn't be doing our jobs if we weren't properly investigated to

make sure that we pay out the correct... He dragged us all the way down here to

tell us that my brother got killed?

And you ain't paying what his death is worth?

As is normal protocol in such instances, a team will investigate the

circumstances of his death to clarify which category he falls under.

What is it involved?

Other soldiers in his unit will be interviewed, other soldiers at his base

will be interviewed, as well as his superiors and perhaps some locals.

An autopsy will also be carried out before his body is passed over to you

for burial.

I'm presuming he'll be buried in the Prairie Wolf Reservation?

That's right.

The United States, as a matter of protocol and principle, will cover the

full cost of the transport and funeral.

He will be afforded a full military send-off, attended by members of the New

Mexico Air Force.

That won't be necessary.

Listen, Mr. Deniclaw.

A soldier killed in foreign territory fighting for his country deserves to be

buried in the flag of his nation.

He died for his work, not his country.

Ma'am, it's official United States Army policy that we adhere to these

regulations.

We bury our own. Just bring him to the border of the reservation.

We'll take care of it from there.

Thank you.

Now, moving along to confirm, Captain Floyd Deniclaw died two days ago in the

city of Bamiyan in Afghanistan from a single bullet entering his temple.

Mrs. Deniclaw, as Captain Deniclaw's mother and sole surviving parent, you

are the sole beneficiary of the compensation and will receive the sum 24

hours after the burial.

This means that 24 hours after the burial, you are entitled to a total of

$12,420.

Pending the upcoming investigation, you could be eligible for the $100,000

compensation afforded to those who died in combat.

Finally, Mrs. Deniclaus, the next of kin, you are entitled to one year's

medical treatment.

at uniform medical services

Come on, Wes. You're just gonna sit outside like an abandoned schoolboy?

What's taking her so long?

She'll be back soon.

When is soon?

Hey, Ray.

Sorry about this morning, Sam.

Not a problem.

Harry told me.

Everything went okay?

Something got all right.

Listen, Ray.

Your boy went off at lunchtime, and he ain't been back.

Where'd he go?

I don't know where he went.

I didn't even know he went until I noticed he weren't there after lunch.

It's not the first time that he's done this.

There's a lot of mamas coming up from the reservation, trying to find jobs for

their kids, right?

You can't be putting up with him running off like this.

Okay.

Have a word with him, would you?

When are they bringing your uncle's body back?

Don't know.

You're scaring him.

He's in awful shape.

You should have left him at the dog center.

I don't want his last days being caged up.

We'll be there in a minute.

Hey, let me get a smoke from you.

You, uh, coming to the fight?

No.

One of my friends is bringing in some new birds for sale.

If you're looking.

He cut a deal with some Salvadorians that came in from Florida.

And birds are, uh, meant to be as mean as they come.

Not interested.

You, uh...

Holding on to another fight for Marlin?

All right, Dad.

I'll see you later.

Your daddy's cousin's got a new car every time I see him.

That's what bulletin gets you.

What's up, youngsters?

You're only for the case right now.

I have a nephew.

Bring me all the way out here just for one.

How's the dog doing?

He's alright.

He

don't

look alright.

Where were you today?

Want to head on over to the cockpit?

No.

For a little bit?

No, just taking a move.

Give me a buck to bet.

I wanted to speak to Major Robertson.

Major Robertson.

This is Raymond, the necklock.

Do you get any idea when you'll be expecting him back?

No.

It's all right.

I'll try getting him here.

No. He knows what it's about.

I'm out of cash.

And what can I do for you?

Can you give me a couple of cans?

I'll pay you tomorrow.

Fred, I can't do that.

You know my ma don't allow it.

You know what they do, Rosie?

There's a family.

They hunt the Indians and skin them.

A father, son, two daughters,

and a mother.

to skin the Indians and use the skin to

make puppets for their traveling puppet shows.

How do they make puppets out of real skin?

Just like they make any other type of puppets.

They say there's a priest that helps them.

Hey!

Get the fuck out of here, Rosie.

I'm going home.

See you, Wesley.

Come visit me again soon.

Peter! Wes.

You know you can't be hanging out back here. Get moving.

Where's your mama?

She ain't here.

Give me a couple of cans and put it on my cousin's tab.

You stop talking shit to my sister.

You hear?

You seen them Indian hunters?

There ain't no hunters.

Your mama knows all about them.

You ask her.

Stop. Coming back here.

Come on, Wes, get lost.

I'm sure your daddy knows all about them, too.

He goes and watches the traveling puppets.

Doesn't he?

You boys want to get me one of them cans of beer?

Go in that room.

Take a few cans from the fridge.

Did you see him yet?

Luis told us to wait out here.

You think I can have your word with him?

He's not going to be able to talk right now.

If we get a witness statement from someone...

I'll take it across the border and get things moving with the police there.

Oh, come on now.

What's that going to get us?

Mary?

No point.

You leave my boy alone, Mark.

Don't you be fucking with him, you.

You know who they are, right, Paul?

They're only kids.

I don't know any better.

I'll be sorting them out.

He's all I got left.

Maybe since Bob passed.

How many times has Bob saved me from getting a beating out in Rowan?

You never want enough trouble out there.

So don't be coming around stirring up shit.

Your brother will be just fine.

Why is he sleeping so much?

He's pumped full of pills to keep him from needing alcohol and to take away

the pain.

I'll check on him later.

If Paul don't do nothing about them boys, I will.

He will.

Can't let this pass.

Just give him a chance.

I'd have already cut their throats by now.

You gonna call the sergeant today and ask what's going on?

I'll call him from work today.

They gonna transfer that $12,000 for sure?

That's what he says anyway.

It's the $88,000 they're looking into.

Yeah, Major. Raymond DeNeclau here.

I was wondering...

Could I drop by and have a word with you?

Well, I was wondering if I could stop by and have a word with you.

A friend we have in Jesus All our sins and griefs

to bear Is this a 1980s remodel?

This? Yeah, it's 83.

I had one just like it.

Did you?

Hell, this could have been my old truck.

Where you from?

Tulsa.

What are you doing?

Come through Indian land.

What, just passing through?

Yeah. I'm just passing through.

Killing time.

Killing time.

How's your mother holding up?

She's doing all right.

Listen, Mr.

Denerclaw. It's Ray.

Ray, I'm struggling to get them to see it in your favor with the rest of the

compensation.

The other soldiers that went out that day with your brother said one minute he

was there, the next minute he had disappeared.

No one goes walkabout in that section of Bamiyan.

Especially someone who's served as long as your brother had.

Come in.

Thank you, darling.

Pleasure. Thank you.

We found his weapons in another location.

He probably put them down and ventured off unarmed.

He was shot once in the temple at close range.

As if he walked right into the bullet.

We went over this already.

Well, you know, I'm gonna be seeing you in a couple of days for the services,

and I'm sorry, but the case is still open and unresolved.

Florida's mama's last chance to get it right.

I met a girl once, prettiest thing on the reservation.

I plied her with beer promises.

Only one of them promises I kept

I was to marry her.

She went and got herself sober.

Didn't even ask me to get sober.

I got sober for my mama.

You given any thought to sending him to Burnsville to clean up?

He's not had a drink in a few days. No better time than now.

You could use some of Floyd's compensation money.

Wes will never agree to go.

Try again.

Just ask him one more time. If he wants to stop, he'll stop.

That'll be never.

Ray did all by himself.

When you're done, get through those backs to the feed room.

You're Wesley's brother.

I remember you.

Haven't seen you around for a while.

They ain't here.

The people you're looking for, they ain't here.

How's Wesley doing?

He's getting better.

When's he getting out?

Ain't sure.

You should fill up a bathtub.

with a drop of rubbing alcohol and some bleach.

Very little bleach.

Maybe a drop or two.

Make sure you mix it with bubble bath liquid.

Soak yourself in this and it'll sort out your hands.

It'll clean you right out.

It'll also tire you out so you can sleep.

You should take it easy with the bleach though. You don't want to turn into a

whitey.

Don't have a bathtub.

Then just fill up a sink with this mixture and soak your hands in it.

My brother and Pete are over at our house.

At the track repair shop in Derry.

You Derek's girl?

Yeah You know where it is?

My dad's going bowling in about an hour

I am not at liberty to accept this.

Present arms!

Gary, we've been talking to State Patrol.

My boy's in the hospital with a punctured lung and a face that looks

like a Libra immune.

So is my boy.

It was Raymond.

I know it was Raymond.

You don't think I wish I could break every single one of his friggin' bones?

Everybody's angry, Derek.

So what's wrong with that?

I had you running this place for me for 15 years.

It's pretty solid employment.

You see where I'm getting at, Derek?

I'll cover your life's medical bills and you let this one go.

And the rest of you better quit stirring shit and get on back to your jobs.

Wesley's doing okay.

Really?

He's getting there.

You should drop by the clinic and see him.

He's getting out soon.

Light up.

New clinic over in Burnsville.

The rehab place?

How long is the waiting list?

Not sure.

It's quite a wait, though.

And if they pay?

They just walk in and they give them a bed.

Peanut butter and jelly.

Thank you, Mama.

Seriously.

Mine and Mary.

My boy was a bit excessive.

I'm having trouble controlling people here.

Tell them there are still some sober Indians around.

Could you give me four to start with?

Been saving up these past days.

You wanna write something on my cast?

What do I write?

Whatever you want.

I don't have a pen.

Use this rug.

I don't know what to write.

Write your pretty little name.

Jamie.

Let's go.

Where are we going?

Can we bring Danny too?

Your brother said he'd get me some Indian music.

Say what?

Wesley.

You promised me some music.

Look at him.

He ain't got no music on him right now.

He came here straight from the hospital.

Here, take it.

This is Indian?

Yeah, alright.

Almost felt you touching me just now.

I wish I knew which way to turn the road.

I feel so good, then I feel so bad.

Wonder what I ought to do

If I could only

fly If I could only fly

I'd bid this place goodbye

Come and be with you

But I can hardly stand Got nowhere to

run Another sinking sun

One more lonely night

If I could only

fly If you could only fly

If we could only fly, there'd be no more lonely nights.
