- What are you doing in my room?
- Oh, good.
You're finally up.
I was worried I was gonna have to wait in here all day.
- Who are you?
- Ivy.
But that's not really important.
What's important, Sean, is what you've been up to.
- How do you-
- Shh.
You see, I'm trying to explain myself
and I really can't do that if you keep interrupting me.
You see, you have been a rather naughty boy.
Last I checked, still wasn't okay
to cheat on your girlfriend.
Or is it ex-girlfriend by now?
Daphne really didn't like you flaunting it either,
posting all those photos online so your friends could see.
That's like two years of her life wasted on you, Sean.
And like, for what?
- Crazy bitch, you ruined my life.
- Hey, I didn't cheat on your girlfriend, buddy.
You did that all on your own.
I just took a few photos, sent a few screenshots.
A girl's got to get paid, you know?
Here.
You're gonna need that a lot more than I do.
Oh and if anybody asks,
could you just pretend I wasn't here?
It's not like anybody's gonna believe you
after last night's adventure through social media though.
Am I right?
I'd pick that up if I were you.
You have some serious damage control to do.
- [Daphne] Are you serious?
How long?
Because it's been two fucking years for me.
(upbeat music)
* Hugging on the coaster
* Budding like a coconut, coconut *
* Dancing like a coco
* I don't need to go
(knuckles rap)
- I did my part.
You should come out looking squeaky clean.
- Did the bastard at least look sorry?
- I mean, he honestly, he just looked confused,
but it could have been gas.
I'm not so sure.
It was a pleasure doing business.
- [Daphne] Are you freaking kidding me?
- Aw, thanks Ivy.
Thanks so much, I appreciate all your help.
- No, no, no, I'm still speaking.
How long has it been? How long?
'Cause it's been two fucking years for me.
Excuse me, I'm speaking.
No, no, no.
Don't tell me to fucking calm down.
* Get back to the place I'm at
* I don't even wanna
* I don't even give a what
- Another satisfied customer.
- As long as there are cheating frat bros,
I'll never be stuck eating ramen noodles unless I choose to.
You know what the real question is?
Why do they always have such shitty taste of beer?
- All beer is shitty.
- Whoa, whoa there.
- What?
It's true, it all tastes the same.
Bitter bread water.
Why would I drink four or five cans of something
that tastes disgusting and will eventually give me
a nasty ass beer gut when I can have
one or two mixed drinks that taste like candy
and get me drunk for the same price?
- Ouch.
Okay, that felt like a personal attack.
- That's just how I feel.
- Okay, well, I think it's time for a history lesson.
- Oh god.
- Oh, come on, it won't be that bad.
So.
There are these archeologist dudes
and they're, you know, hanging out in a ancient Sumeria
and they come across these 6,000-year-old clay tablets
that have the oldest recipe known to man.
And do you know what that recipe was, Paul?
- Going to guess beer.
- And you guessed correctly.
Do you know why beer has withstood the test of time?
- Because Europeans were nasty and didn't know basic hygiene
and would crap in the drinking water.
So that was the only thing you could drink without dying.
Took a course on Renaissance Europe last semester.
- Well, that too, but I was going to say
and refer to the fact that it's a nice drink to have
when life decides you're gonna have a shit day.
So you know what I'm gonna go do?
I'm gonna go have a nice, tall,
cool glass to take the edge off.
- If you're talking edge, I'm just gonna stick with this.
- Okay, fair point.
Oh, come on, Paul.
- You made me promise something about
nothing till I finish the paper from hell.
- Okay, fair point.
Fucking Garland papers are the worst.
- Yikes.
Nevermind.
- Thank you.
(gentle music)
- Just write that paper, okay?
One of us has to pass this semester.
- Okay.
But you're picking up snacks later.
- You betcha.
Later, bitch.
- Bye, jerk.
(gentle music)
(siren blares)
(knuckles rap)
- Paul, you better have that pizza, I'm starve-
- I need your help.
- Do you want to come in?
- I'm sorry for just showing up at your door.
It's just I didn't really know where else to go.
- [Ivy] It's okay.
- Your friend Daphne told me that you help people,
and I don't have a lot of money,
but I could pay whatever it is that you need.
- Just relax.
Take a breath.
Sit down.
I'm gonna go and get you some water
and then you could just tell me what's wrong.
Is that okay?
- Mm-hmm.
- Pizza has arrived and is ready to be munched and...
You are definitely not Ivy.
- She went to get some water.
- Obviously.
Ooh, pizza.
- So are you two a thing?
'Cause I didn't mean to sit between you guys and...
(Ivy and Paul laugh)
- No.
No, no.
We're just roommates.
Plus Paul's way too gay for me.
- So gay, like super gay.
- Super.
Maybe let's just start with who you are.
- Oh my god, I just kind of skipped over
that part, didn't I?
- Yeah, well, mental breakdowns will do that.
- Delilah.
I'm Delilah.
My friend Daphne told me that you could help me.
- Oh, def, Ivy is the best.
- Paul.
Maybe let her tell me what her problem is
before you tell her I can fix it.
- I was just saying, you're awesome at this stuff.
- Sorry, go on.
- I just found out that I'm going to lose my scholarship
over something that I didn't even do.
I maintain a 4.0 GPA and I worked very hard at it, you know?
And today I found out that I'm going to lose everything
over plagiarism of an essay that I did not plagiarize.
And if I can't have my scholarship and I lose everything,
then I won't be able to pay for anything
and I won't know where I'm gonna live
and I don't know what's going to happen and I don't-
- Slow down.
Just start from the beginning.
- It's for Professor Garland's class.
I have spent weeks researching and writing this essay
and I was honestly super proud of how it came out.
But today I received it and it had my name on it,
but the essay wasn't mine.
And he flagged it for plagiarism.
And I have never plagiarized
a single thing in my entire life.
I don't even read Wikipedia articles.
And to make it worse, now I have the disciplinary hearing
on Friday and I can't even participate in the play and I...
I cannot lose my scholarship.
Please, can you help me?
I don't know what else to do.
- This doesn't seem like an accident.
- Yeah.
I don't know how it could be.
How do you think this happened?
- I don't know, that's why I came to you.
- Do you think somebody framed you?
- Why?
- Do you have any enemies?
- None that I know of.
Is that a thing that people actually have?
- You piss off anybody recently?
Anyone who could gain from this sudden and recent downfall?
- None that I know of.
- Ex-boyfriends, girlfriends,
just friends, et cetera, et cetera.
- Well, I did break up
with my boyfriend Basil a few weeks ago,
but he would never do anything like this.
- You have the original paper?
- I do, as a matter of fact,
and it's date stamped and everything and I have...
Please.
- I can't make any promises, but I'm gonna try.
- Does that...
- I'm going to try.
Just send me both papers.
The real one and the fake one and I will look into it.
- Thank you so much.
- Don't thank me yet.
So you good to get home?
- Yeah, actually.
I don't live too far from here.
- You sure you don't want some pizza?
- Oh, actually I'm vegetarian.
- Another time then.
- Thank you so much.
(upbeat music)
- You believe her?
- Yeah.
I think I do.
- Same.
Fuck.
- What is it?
- Then why do I feel like I just made a huge mistake?
- 'Cause you hate people.
- They're the worst.
- Truth.
(bell rings)
(knuckles rap)
- Professor Garland.
Can I talk to you for a minute?
- Sure, sit down.
- Oh, it'll only take a minute.
- So how's your final paper going?
- Oh, it's good, it's coming along.
I'm actually here for a different reason though.
You see, I am writing an article for the journal
and I was wondering if I could ask you a few questions.
- I didn't know you were part of the journal.
- It's for another class technically,
but the article, if it's good,
will end up in the journal.
- What's the article on?
- It is about how colleges handle plagiarism
and I just wanted to get a better grasp
on how teachers deal with it
considering you are currently, well, dealing with it.
- I see.
- So can I ask you a few questions?
- Fire away.
Just know that there are certain things
I won't be able to talk about
just 'cause of the nature of the process.
- Understandable.
So how do you know if a student
has plagiarized another student's work?
- Ah.
Well, typically when a student hands in a paper,
we scan that paper through a program
comparing it to other works,
both professional and student submitted documents.
If more than a certain percentage is determined
to be from other works, it is then flagged.
After that, the professor,
which is me, personally checks it.
- What's the program?
- Most universities in our network
use a program called Grapevine.
- And what do you do next
if you determine that it is plagiarized?
- Then I have a private meeting with the student
and the university gets involved.
- How often does this happen?
- Typically, not that often.
But when it does, it is a serious matter.
Which is why personally, I don't like to involve
the administration if I don't have to.
Unless it's of course particularly egregious.
- Now, I know that you have a certain student
who has recently been accused of plagiarism.
- I can't talk about it.
- Not even off the record?
- I see what you're doing there, but no.
- Okay, well, you can't blame me for trying.
- No, no, I can't.
Are you thinking about majoring in journalism?
'Cause you just might have a knack for it.
- Nah, journalism is a dying art,
but thanks for your help, professor.
(upbeat music)
- So what did you find out during the one-on-one?
- Basically, everybody uses the same software.
So I put in the essay that Delilah was framed for writing
through it and it turns out it was written
by some woman named Rose Blue-Bell.
- So we are here to ask some questions
to see if she's involved first.
- No.
I want to get the low down on the ex-beau,
see if he's involved with anything first.
- Isn't that a lot of jumping to conclusions
before getting all the facts
based on your preconceived notions?
I'm taking intro to criminology this semester
and this week is racial profiling.
- Don't worry.
I'll look into her too, okay?
Just want to get a feel of the whole situation
before I go dragging other people into it.
- Okay, as long as you don't start ignoring facts.
I know you're used to people paying you
to find out if their SO is getting
something nasty on the side.
- First of all, never say that again.
Second, are you ready to get acquainted
with the art of our theater department or not?
- Not really.
- Also, it's not just the ex, Basil.
I also want to see what the deal is with the school play.
- Well, it's "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?"
You see, that bitch with the drink in her hand is Martha
and that glistening hunk in the half buttoned dress shirt
and the flowers is George,
which is definitely a step up from Richard Burton,
even if the character is kind of a tool.
- Paul, I was talking about the actors, not the characters.
- I was just asking,
are we thinking he's a jerk on stage and real life?
- Well, it's too early to rule it out.
- Remember our jump into conclusions conversation.
I am not just saying this
because he is a good looking man barely wearing a shirt.
- Stop leering.
You're here for backup, not to check out Delilah's ex.
No matter how hunky he is.
- So you admit he's hunky.
- I have eyes.
- [Stage Director] All right, everyone stop.
All right, take five, everybody.
We'll come back and try the scene again.
- Stay here for a minute, okay?
I'm gonna go ask Basil some questions.
- Yeah, you do that.
- So you guys think Delilah was framed.
I knew it.
That girl doesn't have a bad bone in her body.
- Excuse me?
- I'm the George understudy.
- Oh, well, yeah.
My friend Ivy, the girl who just left,
she sometimes is a private investigator.
She's trying to figure it out.
- That's super cool.
- [Paul] I know, it really is.
- Well, unfortunately, she's got it all wrong.
I get why she'd think it was Basil
with the recent breakup and all,
but the word is that they broke up
because he got all serious and Delilah wasn't ready,
which is understandable because she's young
and doesn't want to get tied down.
As I understand, there's not too much
bad blood there though.
Now, if anybody was going to frame Delilah,
my money's on the understudy Angelica.
- It appears to me you seem to know what's going on.
I'm Paul.
- Reed.
- Tell me more about this Angelica.
- You ever watch "Rugrats" as a child?
(pensive music)
- [Angelica] Can I help you?
- Oh, no.
Sorry, I was looking for somebody else.
You're the Martha understudy, right?
- Actually, I'm just Martha, thank you.
Hazel is the understudy now.
- Oh.
What happened to the girl who was originally playing her?
- Delilah is on academic suspension.
Plagiarism does not pay.
Now can you get out of my space?
We're in the middle of a rehearsal
and I do not have time for this.
- Actually, I'm writing a piece on the winter showcase
for the journal and I was hoping to get a quote
about, you know, how you guys are handling
the sudden change so close to opening night.
- We are doing just fine.
After all, the show must go on
and we are an excellent team full of talented actors.
I'm sorry for being so rude earlier,
but I really don't like people touching my things
and I really don't have the time.
- [Ivy] I understand.
- If you want to do an interview at another time.
- Oh.
- Sorry, she doesn't mean to be so rude.
That's just how she is.
- Mm-hmm.
- So you're writing an article about us for the journal?
- Maybe.
I'm still feeling things out.
- I get that.
We're still feeling out the performance ourselves.
I'm Basil.
- Ivy.
- I can answer some of your questions if you need me to.
- Oh, well, I was just wondering
how you guys are handling the sudden change
so close to opening.
- Yeah, not gonna lie, it's been a bit rough.
We were playing it pretty close already,
so it's definitely a major setback.
- Do you feel ready for Friday's performance?
- Ah, for sure.
Won't be easy, but it is what it is.
- Are you at all angry about how plagiarism
has played a part in the loss of your lead actress?
- If you're doing a smear piece on Delilah,
I'm not gonna be a part of that.
If she says it was an academic mix up,
it was an academic mix up.
It's gonna get resolved soon.
- I'm just asking questions.
I promise.
It's not an attack piece, okay?
I just gotta get all the details.
- Good, because Delilah's good people.
It's just being top of the honor roll
on top of doing a whole play, it's stressful.
- Do you think it was at all possible
for somebody to try and frame her?
- Why would somebody frame her?
- All right everyone.
Time for a small stage meeting.
Let's bring it in.
- I gotta go, but good luck with
the rest of your article, Ivy.
And if you need anything else, don't be afraid to ask.
- Thanks.
- And the goat was in the backseat the entire time.
- You know, I always expected drama had, well, drama.
I just didn't expect it to be so weird.
- The best things are always a little weird.
- I got what I needed, so we should get going.
- Ivy, this is Reed.
He's part of the theater program.
- Hi.
- Reed was telling me about some of the other actors
involved with the play.
You know, like who would have a motive
to frame our new friend.
- If you're looking at someone
who would want to frame Delilah
and get her out of the play, I would look to-
- Angelica?
- Yeah.
- We just met.
You an actor?
- Yeah.
- They're having one of those circle meeting things.
- Shit, I got to go.
It was nice meeting you.
- Bye.
- Want to get snacks on the way home?
- Yeah.
(upbeat music)
- Interesting.
Very interesting.
Hey, Delilah.
It's Ivy.
Yeah, I think I found something,
but I'm gonna need a favor.
(upbeat music)
(car squeaks)
- Hey, Ivy.
- Daphne.
- I just wanted to thank you again for what you did for me
and thanks for helping out Delilah.
- It's okay, it's kind of my job.
How are you not freezing right now?
- It's not that cold out.
Plus I gotta look good for my date.
Don't get her in too much trouble, okay?
- Promise.
- Bye.
- Girl does know that it's below zero, right?
- Yeah, that's Daphne for you.
I swear it's a New Englander thing.
Her entire family shovels in shorts.
Though I am a bit concerned about
how quickly she's moving on rather than how she's dressed.
- She's hurt.
She's trying to prove how much she didn't need him.
I get that.
Who are we to judge how she moves on, though?
- But it's been like a day
and she's already on a date with some guy she met on Tinder.
I could never do that.
It's been, what, three weeks I've been single
and I'm still nowhere near ready to date.
- Everybody's different.
Plus being single isn't that bad.
- Well, I guess I didn't mean it like that.
Believe it or not, I'm actually in love with being single.
I get to make my own decisions
without having to wonder if somebody else
is okay with it or not.
I mean, I think it's just so freeing to be able to do
what I want when I want without having to ask
somebody about it first.
- Preach.
(upbeat music)
So you're sure that this is Basil's car.
- It isn't like I dated him since high school or anything.
- Okay, fair point.
I just don't want him walking in on me
breaking into his car.
- No, he works out with Sean from 6:30 to 7:30
on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
He's predictable like that.
Do you really think that it was him?
- Honestly, I'm not sure.
I just need to rule something out.
- What do you mean?
- You know your essay that wasn't your essay?
- Yeah.
- So I was looking into it and I found out
it was written by a former graduate named Rose Blue-Bell.
- That doesn't sound familiar.
- Yeah.
That's because she goes by the name Rose Chickweek
after she married Derek Chickweek,
who is the cousin of one-
- Basil Braxton.
That might be a coincidence,
but honestly, I don't believe in those.
- Well what are you looking to find?
- Copy of the paper, USB,
something that proves that he might have made the switch.
- Okay.
That makes sense.
- You're not mad?
- Why would I be mad?
You're doing exactly what it is that I asked you to do.
- Can I ask you a personal question?
- Sure.
- You and Daphne.
I mean, how do you guys know each other?
You just, you seem so different.
- She's a legacy friend.
- [Ivy] A what?
- Okay, so Daphne and I have known each other
since we were like six years old.
We grew up together and we went through a lot.
But honestly, I think you're right.
If I had met Daphne, say, today,
I don't think that we'd be friends.
And I feel bad for saying this because I love her to death
and I wouldn't change our friendship for the world.
But I guess it's just as you start to grow,
you start to grow apart from the people that you love.
- Yeah, I get that.
- And then she's great.
You know, she's just more of a sorority rush, party girl,
and I'm, well, I'm not.
- Yeah, but I think that's part of
the reason to go to college.
It's not just the learning and to get a degree
and to get a good job, but college is the place
where you can really meet your people.
I met Paul freshman year,
and now I couldn't imagine my life before him.
- You know, I never thought of it like that.
- I think I'm gonna go.
- Oh, wait.
If it's not in the glove box,
then it's definitely going to be
on the floor of the backseat.
- Thanks.
(pensive music)
* How's it living in my rear view *
* I'm always one step ahead of you, you, you *
* I'm a psycho trip lunatic
* On the run fugitive
* You can't handle me

* You'll never catch me, you'll never catch me *
- No no no no no no no no.
Oh my god, oh my god, oh my god.
Fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck.
(upbeat music)
- Plus Linden is really cool.
I think a small party is just what you need
to get you out of this funk, man.
- Is that one of your theater dudes?
- Yeah.
Honestly, it's a pretty chill group of people,
ignoring a few divas.
- Do you know what kind of drinks
they are going to be at this party?
It's not gonna be those girly drinks, right?
- No idea.
The invite said bring your own beer, hence the case of paps.
Really dude, girly drinks?
Booze is booze.
- Dude, I swear I lost you ever since you started theater.
It's like I don't even know you anymore.
- You were literally over my place yesterday
watching the Bruins game.
I say watching, but I think you spent the whole time crying
about how much you want Daphne back.
- Thanks for that, by the way.
Daphne still has not answered my calls, my texts, my snaps.
I even tried LinkedIn.
- Maybe you shouldn't have cheated on her then?
- Yeah, but I mean, I was drunk and you know,
Violet was there and have you seen Violet?
Because I mean, come on, look.
- Dude, I'm driving.
- The thing is I really haven't been with anyone else
besides Daphne, so now I know.
- Didn't you hook up with Violet
a few weeks ago at a different party?
- Yeah, but Daphne don't know.
- So now you want her back?
- Do you think I still have a chance?
- Honestly, you fucked up.
Royal.
I'd just move on if I were you.
- Yeah, I tried that, but you know,
Violet now knows I had a girlfriend we were hooking up
and now she wants nothing to do with me.
- Well, hey, come on.
We are young, single guys with bright futures
in need of ruining.
I say we take advantage.
- Is that how you're dealing with Delilah dumping your ass?
- It was a mutual breakup, thank you very much.
She needs time to figure out who she is
without a partner and I'm respecting that.
- Dude.
First, you asked her to move in with you
at the end of the semester,
she ripped your heart out and then had the audacity
to ask if you two could still be friends.
- Which we are.
Oh, hey, look at that, we're at Linden's.
Time for liquor.
- I'm actually gonna meet you up there.
I'm gonna try Daphne one more time.
- All right, bro.
Don't say I didn't warn you.
Don't forget to lock the car on the way up, okay?
- I will not.
(phone rings)
- [Voiceover] You have reached
the voicemail of Daphne Kolster.
Please leave your message after the beep.
- Shit.
- Oh, Sean.
This is sad.
- How the fuck?
- You should really listen to Basil
when he tells you to move on.
I know Daphne has.
Oh, look.
You peed yourself a bit.
Let's just keep this moment between us, okay?
Not that anyone would believe you
if you tried to tell them though, but you already know that.
There are napkins in the glove compartment.
- Oh shit, I'm sorry.
- My bad.
- Ivy, right?
You're the girl that's doing the piece
about the winter showcase for the journal.
- Yeah.
Maybe, it's more for a class.
We can't all be theater majors.
- Oh my god, I wish.
I'm actually a business and finance major.
I got to be responsible, Ms. Journalism.
- I'm actually psych.
- Really?
That's interesting.
- I kind of hate it.
- Yeah, same.
Hey, listen, I know it's really last minute,
but my buddy Linden's having a party like right there.
I just gotta get the beer out of my car.
Do you maybe want to come and hang out for a bit?
It's a really cool group of people.
- Oh, actually that's my ride, so I got to go.
- Later.
- I'm so sorry, I panicked, so I kind of followed-
- That was badass.
You totally just saved my skin back there.
- Thank you.
Did you find anything?
- No.
But good news though, I don't think Basil's involved.
- I don't mean to tell you that I told you so,
but I told you so.
So far you're turning out to be a pretty bad detective.
- Hey, what happened to, "Basil's so predictable.
He's like clockwork."
- Okay, yep, I messed up too.
- Yeah, I know, okay, I messed up,
which means I have to go back
and I have to re-examine the evidence.
But you know, don't worry, okay?
I'm not out of any ideas yet.
- Is this normally how you live your life?
- Not really.
You're special.
- Oh, you're just saying that.
- You know, you can slow down.
We're nowhere near Basil.
Plus I think Paul would actually murder you
if we got a ticket.
- Okay, yeah, yeah, yeah, gotcha.
- Thanks for the rescue.
- No problem.
Though you should probably take the wheel
because I actually don't know how to drive
and I don't have a license.
- Oh my god.
Just pull over right here, right here.
(gentle music)
- Why would someone frame Delilah?
(gentle music)
Fuck.
(gentle music)
You're not gonna believe the night I just...
Oh shit.
Sorry.
- Hey.
- [Ivy] Hey.
- Hi. - Hi.
- So you wanted to ask me something.
- Yes.
Now don't say I told you so,
but I'm pretty sure it wasn't Basil.
- I knew it.
I don't know if you remember me.
I'm Reed.
We met earlier today in the auditorium.
- I remember.
- It's Angelica the understudy with an ax to grind.
- Yes, I see what you mean,
but I don't want to go jumping to any conclusions
so I'm gonna examine all the options.
- Do you have any other suspects?
- What about Professor Garland?
- Really?
- Hey, he's the one that flagged it as plagiarism.
- But why would he do that?
- Okay, so what I think the problem was is that
I was focusing too much on motive and not the facts.
What does this all lead back to?
- Delilah.
- The play.
- Well, that too, but I was gonna say the essay.
- Plagiarism. - Plagiarism.
- Yes.
It all leads back to Professor Garland's paper
and Rose Blue-Bell.
- Who's that?
- Oh, she's the girl that wrote the original paper.
- Oh, that makes sense.
- Would you guys be down for a brainstorm session
or is that asking a little too much?
- Absolutely.
(upbeat music)
- Consider it my apology for my failure to knock.
- Thanks for that by the way.
- Yeah, that was my bad.
If it makes you feel any better,
it'll be seared into my brain for the rest of eternity.
- Weirdly enough, it does.
Maybe it will teach you a lesson.
- Boys, I think it's time for a mystery board.
- I have no idea what that is, but yes.
- You ever watch a cop show and they have the suspects
and a string tying them to clues?
It's kind of like that, but with less murder.
- Oh, I get it.
- It's probably a really bad name for it.
- Shh.
This is perfect.
(funky jazz music)
- What are we all smiley at?
- Hey.
- So you guys like DMing now?
- It's not like that.
I just broke into his car.
- Then it must really be love.
- Stop it.
You're the one banging some guy you met
less than 24 hours ago.
- What?
He's cute, smart, funny.
Have you seen his ass?
Wait, you have.
- Okay. I get it.
God, put a sock on the door next time, okay?
I'm just not used to you getting laid.
- Ouch.
You have to admit, he's been super helpful.
- Fine.
You're right.
- It is late.
We should probably go to bed.
- I'm gonna stay up a little bit.
Do some more work.
I have to figure out who framed Delilah
by Friday's disciplinary hearing, but you go.
Get some rest.
(upbeat music)
- Just don't stay up too late, okay?
- I'll try.
(upbeat music)
(phone buzzes)
- Five more minutes, mom.
(phone buzzes)
- Oh, no.
- What's going on?
- I don't know.
- Breakfast?
- Is that French toast?
- You okay in there?
- I'm late for class.
I can't find my keys, I can't find my backpack.
- And apparently your shoe.
- Shove it.
Did you cook?
I didn't know you could do that.
- What happened to I'm late for class?
- What? I'm hungry.
- This is really good.
- What about your backpack?
- I'm not going to class.
- Then where are you going?
- I have an even stupider idea.
- This has been the oddest date.
- It's not normally like this.
- I like it.
(upbeat music)
(doorbell rings)
- Is this the house of Rose Blue-Bell?
- I'm Rose.
I go by Chickweek now.
- Hi, I'm Lily.
I'm with the Pollination Foundation.
I was wondering if I could take a second of your time
to talk about the bees.
Okay, look, I know you don't want to hear a whole spiel
on how the bees are dying
and we're not gonna have any strawberries anymore,
but honestly, I just need a few more signatures to get paid.
- Is it gonna cost me any money?
- No, it's just about banning some pesticide.
- Okay.
I like the environment.
- Thank you.
Do I know you from somewhere?
- I don't-
- Did you go to an Atkins University?
- Yeah.
- Were you in Garland's class?
- I was the TA.
- Yes, yes, I knew I recognize you.
How are you?
- Would you like to come inside for some tea?
- Oh, that would be lovely.
- And then I took some time off to take care of the baby.
Would you like any sugar or honey?
- Sugar is just fine.
Thank you.
You know, it's actually so great.
I ran into you because I was considering of TAing
for Garland next semester.
- Really?
- Mm-hmm.
Yeah, I thought it'd be good for money
and, you know, I'm not really looking forward
to paying back my student loans, so.
- I might pick a different professor if I were you.
- Really?
Why is that, what's wrong with Garland?
- He's just not the best with boundaries.
You didn't hear this from me.
He likes to sleep with his students.
- Isn't he married?
- Yep.
- He ever, you know, with you?
- Oh, no, no.
He made a couple passes.
Nothing serious.
But he did end up hooking up with my roommate
and then dumping her after the semester was over.
- Whoa.
- Yeah.
It totally wrecked her.
I mean, she finally moved on,
but it was super messed up
how he took advantage of the situation.
Total abuse of power.
- No, totally.
- Come on.
I just put her down for her nap.
I'll be right back.
- Take your time.
(pensive music)
- Sorry.
- Oh, no, but that's okay.
You know, I should actually probably get going
because technically I'm still on the job.
But thanks for your advice.
Seriously, you were a major help.
- Us girls gotta look out for one another.
- Oh, most definitely.
Well, oh.
Oh.
(upbeat music)
(bell rings)
- Hey, watch where you're going.
- Sorry, my bad.
- Ivy.
- Basil.
We keep running into each other.
- If I didn't know any better, I'd say you were stalking me.
(Basil and Ivy laugh)
- No, I only do that when I get paid.
- So how's that article coming along?
- You know, working on it between papers
and finals wasn't my best choice.
- Bummer.
- Oh, it's coming along.
I'm just not getting any sleep.
- Who sleeps the week before finals?
The week, that's who.
- I'm actually interviewing Delilah for the article.
That's why I'm here.
- I get that.
Angelica and I, we're just here to talk about the play.
- So, see you around?
- Yeah, see you around. - Bye.
- That looked so awkward.
- Oh, really?
That's so strange 'cause that's exactly how it felt.
- So there was something that you wanted to talk about?
- I just wanted to ask you a few more questions
'cause I feel like there's something we looked over.
I feel a little uncomfortable asking this,
but did Professor Garland ever make a pass at you?
- What?
- Has he ever made you feel uncomfortable?
- No, not really.
I don't think he tried to make a pass at me.
Honestly, other than class, we don't really speak.
- Any reason he'd want to frame you?
- Well, I guess there was that one time
where he told me to smile in the beginning of class,
but it was before I had my coffee.
But I think that was just
my resting bitch face that came out.
- It's not really a motive.
- Yeah.
I got nothing.
- Maybe a TA?
- We don't have one.
She quit the first month in.
- Of course she did.
- Why are you asking me this?
- I had a really interesting conversation with Rose.
She used to be Garland's TA back in the day
and she told me that he's pretty shady.
- Huh.
- Like dipping into
the student body extracurricularly shady.
- Oh.
Oh.
- There you go.
Now the only person left on our suspect list is Angelica.
- What?
- She really wants to be the lead.
- Okay.
You really think that Angelica would frame me for plagiarism
just to get my part in the play?
- Your name didn't get on that paper by accident.
- I know that.
You have any proof?
- Oh, you just love shutting down my ideas.
- I know, I'm sorry.
- Look, I'm trying to save your butt.
I have until Friday afternoon to do this
and today is already Wednesday.
- I know, I'm sorry.
I'm not trying to.
- No, I'm sorry.
Look, I'm getting frustrated.
- It's okay if you can't figure it out.
- What?
- I know that you've been trying your best,
and honestly, this whole situation really sucks and I-
- No, you don't give up because I'm not giving up.
Look, I know you didn't do this
and I don't want to see you get screwed over.
Okay, usually it's just cheating rich kids.
I'm not gonna let the system fuck you.
- Thank you.
- I'm a little off today, aren't I?
- Little bit.
- I think it's lack of sleep.
- Listen, Ivy, you've got this.
You know, when I'm feeling burnt out,
sometimes I just like to take a rest
and it helps my mind reset.
It might not be the same for you or maybe it is,
but maybe a rest is in order.
- Okay, mom.
- Listen, I have to get going,
but I just want to say thank you
for everything that you've done.
Honestly, you've been amazing.
(bell rings)
- Hey you mind if I sit?
- Sure.
- Angelica sent me over here to tell you that
when you write about her for the article,
make sure to include that she is an honor roll student,
leader of the theater club,
and a senior member of the Model UN
all while being the lead of the play.
- She's very thorough that way.
- Yeah, she says you must maintain your image
if you want to be successful.
- God, that must be exhausting.
Wait, when was Model UN?
- What?
- Didn't they just have a trip to New York?
- Yeah, all last week.
Stage director Nettles was super pissed.
- Shit, ruins that idea.
- Huh?
- Don't mind me.
I'm sleep deprived.
- Listen, so that wasn't the only reason
I wanted to come sit.
I've been trying to build up the courage for a bit,
but I was kind of wondering
if maybe you'd want to go out with me.
- Sure.
- How about tonight?
- Actually could use a break from studying
so tonight sounds good.
- Really?
- Yeah.
- Awesome.
I'll pick you up seven-ish?
- Works for me.
- Wait, where am I picking you up?
- I'll text you.
(upbeat music)
- We finished it after you left.
- What's with the red string?
- That was Reed.
He said it needed the red string or it wasn't real.
- He does know I'm trying to solve a plagiarism case,
not a murder, right?
- I did explain that to him.
- I think it might be Garland.
- What makes you say that?
What happened to Angelica?
- So I talked to Rose Blue-Bell this morning
and she told me that Garland used to be a little intimate
with his students back in the day if you catch my drift.
And it can't be Angelica
because Angelica is a part of Model UN.
And Angelica was out of state till Monday,
so which completely rules her out.
- So do you think he had a thing for Delilah
and she turned him down,
and that's why he ruined her entire academic career?
- No, because I also spoke to Delilah
and Delilah told me that she barely interacted with the man.
- Then why are you eyeing the professor?
- Because I know he had the means to do it.
I just don't know why he would do it.
Plus he's like the only one I have left.
- Which is why you're not sure if he's just a creepy dude
or a petty evil mastermind.
- Exactly.
- Wait, what's with the makeup?
- I have a date.
- You?
- Yes, me.
(knuckles rap)
Hey, Basil.
- I hope you like flowers.
I was told that they're proper etiquette,
but now I think I might have gone overboard.
- I love them.
Basil, this is my roommate, Paul.
Paul, this is Basil.
- Hey.
- I'm gonna go find a vase or vase equivalent for these.
I think that's the best I'm gonna do.
- Hey, that looks great.
You know, if I didn't already know,
I'd never be able to tell.
- Oh, yeah, my mom still thinks it's a neat vase.
(Basil laughs)
We should get going.
- It was really nice to meet you, Paul.
- Bye.
- What the hell just happened?
- So, why psych?
- Because I thought it would be interesting.
I like figuring out how people work.
But in like half the classes I'm taking,
all we do is talk about Freud.
I hate Freud.
- Why is that?
- He is a cokehead hack
whose every single one of his theories
has been scientifically disproven.
Yet we still start every semester talking about him,
no matter what level the class is.
- So is that why you're thinking of
going into journalism instead?
- Not really.
I don't know what I want to do.
But the more people tell me to go into journalism,
the more I don't want to do it.
So, why business?
- My dad always said it's a practical major and stable.
- Sounds like something a parent would say.
- That's because it is.
- Is that why you hate it?
- It's the macroeconomics,
the microeconomics, the economics.
It's all so dry.
I think that's why I like acting so much.
I love getting to focus on
becoming another person, figuring out-
- Okay, Basil, the major small talk is interesting,
but I need to be real with you for a minute.
- All right.
- I'm not writing a paper for the journal.
I am not involved with the journal.
I'm actually looking into a plagiarism case for a friend.
- All right, like a PI?
- Well, unlicensed.
I was originally hired by Delilah
to figure out who framed her.
- Do you think it was me?
Oh my god, is that why you went on this date?
- No, no, no, no, no.
I went out with you because I don't think
you did it and I like you.
- You like me?
- Yes.
Anyway, I'm telling you this now
because I need you not to look,
but behind you is my prime suspect.
Why does no one ever listen?
- Professor Garland, why?
- Long story short, he's sleazy, okay?
- Okay, he's sleazy.
Why are you telling me now?
- Because I need your help to distract him.
- You need me to distract him?
- Yes, I just said that.
- How?
- Just go up and talk to him.
Aren't you an actor?
- That's helpful.
- Will you do it or not?
- Yes, but only because you like me.
(knuckles rap)
- Hi, Paul.
Is Ivy around?
- She went out on a date tonight.
- Oh, I baked cookies as a thank you for helping me.
- Are those chunky chocolate chip?
- My specialty.
Oh is that for me?
- Oh, yeah.
- Do you mind if I take a look?
- Go for it.
- I don't know why anyone would want to do this to me.
- Hey, Ivy will figure it out.
- But what if she doesn't?
- If she doesn't, she sure as hell
won't let you be kicked out.
Are you doing anything tonight?
- Well, not really.
I mean, right about now,
I would've been just finishing up theater practice.
- Why don't you stay and hang out for a bit?
I got a pizza and promise it's just cheese
so you can eat it.
- All right.
What are you playing?
- Why don't I show you?
These cookies are delish.
- Thank you.
- Professor Garland?
- Yes?
- Hi, sorry.
Basil, Basil Braxton.
I'm a student at Atkins University
and I would really like to take one of your courses.
- Is that a real name?
- Yeah.
I know, my mom was a big fan of "The Great Mouse Detective."
She still says it is the best adaptation of Sherlock Holmes
and the BBC can suck it.
No offense if you like the BBC.
You look like you like the BBC.
- Well, I am partial to BBC America.
What class are you thinking of taking?
- The intro course.
Come.
Communications, communications.
- Now, are you a communications major?
- Technically, I am a business major now,
but I don't think it's really me.
- Unfortunately, that class is all filled up
for the spring semester.
But if you send me an email,
I can make sure to get you on the wait list.
- Oh, here, I have a pen.
See, I have a pen, yeah.
Actually, you know, I can write it down.
What's the email?
- pgarland@atkins.edu.
- You know, I bet I can remember that.
Thank you for your time, professor.
Holy moly, how did I do that?
- You did great.
- Really?
- Totes.
- Did you get what you needed?
- Yes, dude was just carrying the proof right on him.
- Wow.
That seems improbable.
Did you agree to go out with me
just so you could spy on Professor Garland?
- Hey, you picked the place.
- Oh, yeah.
- The real question is,
are you actually named after a cartoon mouse?
I though it was just the herb.
- We're not all named after plants, Ivy.
- We should probably look at the menu
before the waiter shows up.
(upbeat music)
This is my stop.
- I had fun tonight.
- Me too.
- Honestly, you're one of the most interesting people
I've met in a long time.
Night, Ivy.
- Good night.
- You sure you've never played before?
- I still don't even know what the name of this game is.
- Ivy.
- Oh, hey, how was your date?
- It was good, it kind of came out of nowhere.
- Well, I'm just glad that you had the opportunity
to take my advice.
I actually came here to drop off
some cookies as a thank you.
- They are so good.
- Delilah, do you mind if I talk to Paul for a minute?
- Oh, yeah.
- Paul, what the fuck?
- Okay, first things first, she came over on her own.
And second, she's actually really cool to hang out with.
- Yeah, but you could have given me some warning.
- So I'm assuming you didn't tell Delilah
you're dating her ex boo thang.
- Not yet.
And I thought I told you stop saying that.
- You planning on telling her?
- Yes.
I'm just waiting for the right moment.
Plus I really like her too
and I think she's cool, so stop judging me.
- So how really was your date with Basil?
- Oh, it was good.
Thank you so much for asking.
Now shut the fuck up.
- Okay, one more question.
You kiss him?
So I'll take that as a yes.
- Actually, I found out
that Garland totally plagiarized Delilah.
- Is this another one of your hunches?
- No, I totally got proof.
- You at least going to tell her that?
What, I kind of like her and she's really cool too.
- Yeah, no shit.
Okay, let's tell her.
- About Basil.
- Fuck no, the professor.
- Oh, okay.
- Delilah, I have some good news and I have some bad news.
- Okay, hit me.
- So I 100% know that Professor Garland
is the one who framed you.
- What? Why?
- That's the part I'm not so sure about.
See, I was out tonight.
I ran into him and...
- That's my essay.
- I took that photo tonight.
- Bastard.
- Dude, that's fucked up.
- I know.
The only issue is that while I have enough proof
to know that he did it, I don't really have anything
to show at your hearing on Friday.
- [Delilah] I know you'll think of something.
- You will, you always do.
- I'll try.
- Well, it's getting late.
I should probably take Delilah home.
- Oh, right.
It's probably a good idea actually.
- Now I just don't know how I'm gonna write my essay.
- [Paul] I don't know, my friend.
- [Delilah] Oh, and do try one of the cookies though.
I had to make sure that Paul didn't eat them all.
- Fucking Garland.
- Okay, the final exams take place in the same room,
but an hour later, 11 AM.
Hey, don't blame me.
Blame the university.
Oh, and lastly, final papers
are to be in my inbox by midnight, okay?
No later, no exceptions, by midnight.
And though I know that final exams are next week,
if you happen to find yourself
with a little extra time this weekend,
the school theater will be doing a production
of "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?"
which I will be getting a sneak peek of
at tonight's dress rehearsal.
Anything else here?
Oh, the following Tuesday,
there will be a job fair in the Rosewood building.
And I don't think you folks mind
if we end a little early today.
Good? Good.
All right, until next time.
(upbeat music)
- Hey, what you doing?
- Jesus.
Fuck.
- Sorry, didn't mean to startle you.
- Then maybe you shouldn't have snuck up on me.
- Did you get any of my messages?
- Yes.
- Oh.
Good, I wasn't sure 'cause you weren't responding.
- Yeah, that's because I was busy.
- I'm confused.
- How so?
- I thought we had a good time last night.
- We did.
- Then why are you avoiding me?
- Do you guys mind clearing out?
I have a class starting up soon.
- Sure thing, professor.
Sorry, I was just finishing up.
What is wrong with you?
- What's wrong with me?
What's wrong with you?
- Do you like not know how to read a room?
I was in the middle of something time-sensitive
and you just blundered in like an insecure idiot.
- Whoa, whoa, whoa.
I am not insecure.
- No, no, you just blew up my phone
with like 20 texts in less than 24 hours
because I didn't text you back during fricking finals week.
Like are you trying to ruin any desire
I had for a second date?
- You wanted to go on a second date?
- Yeah, until you started stalking me.
- I wasn't.
Okay, I see how it looks bad.
- Yeah.
- You want to maybe go somewhere else and talk it?
- No.
- Oh.
- Don't you have like a dress rehearsal to get to?
- Shit, you're right.
I want to talk later, okay?
I don't like how that ended.
(gentle music)
- You know, you don't have to do this.
- Relax guys.
When has a little breaking and entering ever stop me?
- Most of the time it does.
We really need to have a conversation about
how lately your go-to form of problem solving
has been to resort to breaking and entering.
- Shh.
- [Paul] Just saying it's a serious problem.
- Ah.
- So what is the plan again?
- Okay, guys, here is the plan.
You're gonna stay here, you're gonna keep a lookout.
I'm gonna go, break in, log into his email,
and send an email as proof
that your original essay was not plagiarized.
Now, if you guys see absolutely anything,
you just call me and we will abort like a baby.
- Why would you say something like that?
- I don't know.
Anyway, back to the plan.
- Well, what is it that you're going to do?
- I'm gonna to sneak in through the back door.
- But how do you know that he's not in there
or he's going to be there anytime soon?
- Ah, because he announced it today in class.
He's going to watch the dress rehearsal
for the winter showcase.
- This is a bad plan.
- It is what it is.
Guys.
Since when do you know how to lock pick?
- Since Amazon, a bottle of tequila,
and 12 hours of YouTube happened.
Okay.
Wish me luck.
- If this bitch gets herself killed,
I'm going to be so pissed.
(pensive music)
(pensive music continues)
(pensive music continues)
(pensive music continues)
I know you're vegetarian,
but what are your thoughts on pineapple on pizza?
- What does that have to do with being vegetarian?
- Doesn't it have ham on it or something?
- What?
- You're right, this is terrible small talk.
- No, no, sorry.
It's not that, it's just...
I keep on getting bad vibes.
- No, I don't like this either, but...
Oh fuck me, get down.
He's not supposed to be home.
- What do we do now?
- Does it look like I know?
- Let Ivy know.
- What do you think I'm doing?
- Sorry.
Is that who I think it is?
- I think so.
Yep.
I think she might need backup.
You wait in the car and get it running
in case we need an escape.
- Wait, wait, but I don't know how to drive.
Why do you guys keep doing this to me?
- That should do it.
Hard proof from the villain himself.
Oh shit.
(pensive music)
- You really liked it?
- Yes.
It was a truly layered performance.
So I was thinking next week after finals are over,
we should go on a trip, yeah.
I have ski passes.
We could spend the night.
Actually own this wonderful timeshare nearby.
- Why the hell do you have her essay in here?
- Ah.
That, okay.
Since the hearing with the dean is tomorrow
and you're already the lead for opening weekend
no matter what, I just figured I tell the board
that I made a mistake and apologize to Delilah
'cause this thing has just gotten
far bigger than it should have.
And I think it'd be better if we just nip this in the bud.
- You were supposed to burn it.
- I know, but I started reading it
and it's actually really well-written.
- You lied like you always do.
- I don't always lie.
- Angelica, I'm gonna leave my wife.
Angelica, I burned the essay.
Angelica, you're a talented actress.
Angelica, I love you.
You say these things just to get what you want,
but you don't mean it.
You never mean any of it.
- Angelica.
- Angelica, no.
I put three years into that program.
I was more skilled, the most qualified,
and they still gave it to the affirmative action freshmen.
She's not even a theater major.
It's bullshit.
(phone dings)
- Oh shit.
- [Angelica] Who's there?
- [Professor Garland] Is that a gun?
- [Angelica] Shut up.
Show yourself, I'm armed.
- [Professor Garland] Angelica, put that down.
(gun bangs)
- Oh shit, was that a gunshot?
- Wait, Paul, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait.
- What?
We have to save her.
She's in there for you.
- I know and I agree,
but maybe we should be smart about this.
Maybe not like running into the direction of gunfire.
- What do we do then?
- We walk quietly to the direction
of gunfire while armed.
Okay, better choice.
(tense music)
- I said show yourself.
- You just shot my wall.
- I'm not going to repeat myself.
Who's behind there?
- Don't shoot me.
- Journalism girl?
What the hell are you doing here?
- You just put a hole in my wall.
- Okay, small confession.
I'm not actually writing an article for the journal.
I'm actually a private investigator.
- What?
Oh god.
Did my wife hire you?
- What?
- Did you tell her anything?
- Not yet.
- I will pay you double and I will give you an A
on the final paper if you say that you found nothing.
- Yes, okay, deal.
- No, you're going to tell her.
- Baby.
- Hey, hey, I'll just do whatever doesn't get me shot.
- No one's gonna shoot you, Ivy.
- Like I said, you're always lying.
- Angelica, I told you I'm going to tell her.
We just have to wait till the time is right.
- [Angelica] And when is that going to be?
- Soon, soon, just not right now, okay?
Please, please put the gun down.
Look, I'll show you.
Do either of you have a lighter?
- [Angelica] What are you doing?
- See?
I am burning Delilah's paper.
Huh?
And with it gone, there'll be no more proof.
(Delilah squeaks)
Delilah?
- [Angelica] What?
- Her paper, it's gone.
- [Angelica] Who was behind there?
- No one.
I just thought I heard my wife come home early.
It's nothing.
(gun bangs)
- My refrigerator!
- [Angelica] Who was behind there?
- Guys, what the fuck?
I told you to go wait in the car.
We heard gunshots and kind of panicked.
- What the hell is going on?
Someone is gonna tell me now.
- Okay, look, your wife didn't hire me.
- What?
- Delilah did.
(Angelica screams)
- Oh.
- [Angelica] You.
- Angelica, baby, put the gun down, okay?
I think this whole thing has gotten
a little out of hand, right?
So let's just all calm down and we can just talk it out.
Angelica.
Sweetie.
- I'm done.
(gun bangs)
- You shot me.
(gun bangs)
- Oh shit.
(gun bangs)
(Angelica groans)
(Ivy groans)
If I don't make it, tell whoever asks I loved them.
Except my dad.
- No, Paul, don't.
- Run!
Don't hurt my friend.
(gun bangs)
(upbeat music)
- [Angelica] Delilah, where are you?
Why couldn't you leave well enough alone?
(Delilah squeaks)
Any last words?
- All of this for what?
A part in the college play?
- It's not about the play.
That's the problem.
You never appreciated it.
It was just handed to you.
I worked my ass off for that part.
For once it was gonna be about me.
But no, some college freshman
who has never even acted before
walks in and everyone goes gaga.
I'm no one's second fiddle.
(Angelica groans)
- That's gotta hurt.
- You okay?
- Paul, Paul, is Paul okay?
- Paul. - Paul?
Is he okay?
- Well, I'm not dead.
- She shot me.
- Call 911.
- Fuck.
Don't, don't.
- [Delilah] Hello?
- Yeah, my friend has been shot.
- Oh, this is gonna be a bitch
to explain to the popo, isn't it?
Ow.
- Sorry.
But you're not allowed to die on me, okay?
- Good thing I'm not planning on it.
- This is bullshit.
- Mm-hmm.
- So that's a thing that happened.
- Still can't believe it was even real.
- The paramedic said that Paul's going to be okay.
The bullet didn't hit anything.
It was just a flesh wound and, well, you know,
you won't know for sure until he gets to the hospital, but.
- That's a relief though.
I don't think I could live with myself if-
- I know, I know.
- Same.
Same.
- Well, hey, that's one way
of getting out of writing an essay.
- Hey, I wrote my essay.
- I know.
I'm talking about mine.
- Oh, okay.
Right.
Gotcha.
- So I don't think I can get you back into your play.
- Screw the play.
It's you and Paul that matter to me the most right now.
- Delilah, I have a small confession,
but I just don't really know how to say it.
I really like you, I really value our friendship,
and I wouldn't want to say anything
that would fuck that up, but I just-
- Hey, hey, hey, hey.
How about you tell me what it is
before you start worrying about how I'm gonna react?
- I went on a date with Basil.
- Are you two a thing now?
- I don't know, no.
He's great and he's nice and he's a good kisser and stuff,
but he seems kind of needy.
He like blew up my phone after one date.
I even yelled at him earlier about it.
- Yep, he does that.
- You're not mad?
- How can I be mad?
You literally just took on a girl with a gun
to clear my good name.
I think you are fine.
- God, tomorrow's gonna suck.
- I know.
I don't want to think about it.
- I know, same.
- You really consider us to be friends?
- Of course.
- Good.
'Cause I consider you to be my friend too.
- Really?
- Of course.
- Do you want to crash at mine tonight?
I don't really want to be alone.
- Yeah.
Just give me a moment.
