- [Josh] I don't know where to start.

[children chattering]

I do know you wouldn't be proud of me,

but I need you to know that I tried.

[Nurse] Paging Dr. Grant,

Dr. Grant, please report to the ER,

Dr. Grant to the ER.

- I didn't wanna be in this situation.

I didn't pick it.

I mean, I just did what I, I did,

doesn't make it wrong.

Sometimes, we make decisions

that people don't understand, [Josh yells]

because they weren't there.

I didn't wanna be in this situation.

[Josh yells] I didn't pick it.

That's what they all say,

'cause no one can be bothered to help.

Why don't you have any money?

I bet you do.

I bet you do, and you just don't care if I die, right?

Please, ma'am.

Can you just stop?

Can you just not talk so loud?

[solemn music]

I've been here for so long,

and no one cares about me [laughs].

- [Mason] I'm sorry, Father, for I have sinned.

I have laid my hands on a man of cloth.

But why should I confess to you?

Why not talk to God myself

and cut out the middleman?

God's [gasps], God's people,

But when God spoke to him, they were so afraid,

so they asked Moses to speak on their behalf.

Most people don't want to hear from God.

They don't like what he has to say.

I've come to talk to you.

but I have searched

for a very long time.

What was that they used

to call them?

Freaks?

Demons?

Possessed?

I see an angry boy hiding in a mask.

[Josh] Yeah, I know.

[Emma] Josh?

I can't do this,

this place, these walls, this food.

I want to go home.

I know you do.

I know this is hard,

[tone whining] but you need to trust me.

This is what we need to do for now.

I'm trying to pull some--

[Emma] Please stay, I can't.

- Don't lose control. - I can do better.

[Josh] Emma, Emma.

[Emma] I can do better!

What?

- If you didn't even notice she's out of black paint,

that makes me wonder what else you're missing.

If something so simple can get by you,

how can I trust you to help my sister?

I can't, okay?

That's what I'm trying to tell you.

I'm trying to, but I can't.

[Doug sighs]

No, no, you stick to the plan.

that these are not the answers.

He's family.

It's not that simple, Em.

We have to be careful, even in here.

[both sigh]

Do you remember when we were little kids?

And we read Dad's story about the paratroopers?

And I took one of my bedsheets, and I made a parachute,

and I climbed the tallest tree in our forest,

and I jumped out of it.

I felt like I hit every branch on the way down.

I remember.

- And you dragged me out of the forest

in your old, squeaky red wagon, took me to see Dad.

- You're lucky I was there to save you.

- And the worst part was I tried it again,

a couple of weeks later.

[Emma laughs]

Just me and you, Em.

What happened?

- Oh, it's nothing, just some guy at the bar.

- You're not fighting again, are you?

- I think we need to call your friend.

Okay, I'll give him a call.

[suspenseful music]

we need to do it my way.

[Josh sighs]

Josh.

What am I?

You're my sister.

That's all that matters.

- If that's true, then why am I here?

When you found me in the bathroom,

I wasn't trying to kill myself, not really.

I just needed to know if I was alive or not,

if I was human, if I would bleed,

or just wake up from a dream.

I don't remember what happens,

but I remember the faces after it happened,

every single one.

[Josh sighs]

- I'm gonna get you out of here, Emma, I promise.

I'm gonna get you home, very soon.

No more promises, Josh.

[door buzzes] [lock clangs]

[footsteps clatter]

[Josh sighs]

Why'd you want to meet here?

Ah, bodies are heavy to carry.

It's easier to dump them if they're already at the bridge.

Well, let's go meet the doctor.

You'll need that.

- Josh, I'd like you to meet Mr. Dunn.

- Joshua, it is a pleasure to meet you.

So tell me, Doctor,

how is it you think you can help my sister?

- Okay, uh, we'll get right to it then.

Doug here has shared your sister's case with me.

I think I may be able to help.

- [chuckles] Well, that's a bit of a problem.

See, she's not the biggest fan of doctors.

In our experience, they tend to make things worse.

- Josh, my interest is in the marginalized,

those who don't fit into regular society.

Think square pegs, round holes.

We all have our differences,

but some of us have something more.

Those are the people who interest me.

They're not just different.

They can, they can do things that aren't naturally possible.

[tense music]

I guess what I'm trying to say is some people are capable

of some crazy shit.

From what I've heard, your sister,

she might be one of these people.

And what if she is?

Then she's probably afraid,

afraid of what she can do.

But I help my patients understand their abilities,

and in some cases, maybe even your sister's case,

I can help them to control it.

All right.

But this is how it's gonna be.

What does that mean?

[dramatic music]

You'll have one week.

You'll stay in the building,

and you won't have access to a phone.

You try to get inside her head, you're gone.

You try a test without running it

by me first, you're gone.

[solemn music]

And if you touch her, you're gone.

[door buzzes] [lock clangs]

[door clacks]

Hi.

[clock ticking]

You here to fix me?

- [sighs] No, I'm, I'm here to understand you.

- You might not like what you find, Doctor.

- [chuckles] You don't need to call me that.

- Isn't that what you are, a doctor?

[Malcolm] I'm a specialist.

What does that mean?

- It means I know enough to be dangerous.

It's a bad joke.

I'm a bit nervous here.

I'm Malcolm.

We should talk.

[birds twittering]

Out for a walk?

Care to join me?

I saw a picture in your trailer,

um, old girlfriend?

- [laughs] No, that is my sister.

Ah.

[laughs] Do you still keep in touch?

A little.

She's not well.

I'm really sorry.

Is she--

She's in Trafalgar now.

Look, I appreciate what you're doing.

It's just, right now, I can't--

Can't...

I'm just having a drink with a friend.

[crickets chirping]

[floor squeaks]

[door squeaks] [door clacks]

Josh.

Hmm.

[floor squeaking] [suspenseful music]

[footsteps rustling]

Charming and dark.

[clock ticking]

Emma, I need you to know that you can trust me.

Years ago, a boy, he arrived at my office.

He had a, he had a gift too.

He could take the momentum

from things around him, hold it,

redirect it.

At first, it was arbitrary, destructive.

But then, he, uh, he learned to control it.

Oh, it was incredible to see.

[suspenseful music]

Emma, that boy, he was broken,

but I was able to help him.

And I believe that I can do the same for you,

if you'll let me.

Mine isn't a gift.

You haven't seen what I could do.

But I'd like to.

Will you show me, please?

It doesn't work like that.

No?

But if it did,

wouldn't that mean there's nothing wrong with you?

And if there's nothing wrong with you,

wouldn't that mean you can leave this place?

[door clangs]

[dramatic music]

[ball clatters]

[clock ticking]

So what happened to the boy?

- Do you listen to all of our conversations?

What happened to the boy?

I don't know.

He wanted to find others like him,

give them a place to feel safe.

A place to be safe?

You would know about that.

I often wonder if he succeeded.

[tense music]

Say, uh, coffee?

Or just refried beans and canned fish?

- Yeah, there's a machine over there.

Ah, can I?

Yeah.

Instant.

That's great.

That's great. [jar clacks]

So can you help her?

- Josh, whatever you may believe about your sister,

she's not sick.

There's a scientific solution for all of it.

So what are you saying?

- I'm not interested in fixing her.

She's special.

She can do extraordinary things.

- So if you're not interested in fixing her,

what are you interested in?

Something triggers all of it.

I'm not sure how.

I'm not sure why.

But I figure it all has to do with the amygdala.

It's the part of the brain

that's responsible for decision-making.

For the rest of us, when we face that,

that fight-or-flight situation,

the decision we make, it, it isn't logical.

It's no different for her.

- I would say it's a lot different with her.

- Sure, but what she's capable of isn't the issue.

I mean, if we -- or she -- can just, can just learn

to control that, that split-second decision...

So you believe it's possible?

Yeah, I do.

[suspenseful music] [footsteps rustling]

[flashlight buzzing]

- [Man] Mighty early for trespassing.

I'm sorry.

I was just looking for someone.

[Man] Are you alone?

I wouldn't recommend a pretty girl

like you being out here alone.

Nobody could hear you if you got into trouble.

Who are you looking for?

Um, just a friend.

He lives back there.

You mean Joshua?

Yeah.

- [laughs] Why didn't you say that?

I haven't seen him for a while.

I only see him when the rent's due.

Rent?

- [Landlord] Yeah, for the property.

[Amanda] He rents this?

- [laughs] Yeah, until he buys it,

whenever that is.

He came out here with his sister [chuckles].

I'm always afraid I'm gonna find her dead body buried

in the ground somewhere.

Too bad.

She wasn't hard on the eyes.

She's at Trafalgar.

Trafalgar.

Crazy runs in the family, too.

The house used to be in the family, you know.

His grandfather built it.

[laughs] The old geezer was always ravin'

about government testing and end-of-the-world stuff.

Rumor is he, uh, he built a Cold War bunker

and stocked it for the apocalypse [laughs].

Strange stuff always happened around them,

after the accident.

Anyway, I, uh, I got things to deal with.

[ominous music]

Take care of yourself.

[footsteps rustling]

[wood cracking]

[suspenseful music]

Amanda?

What are you doing out here?

- Uh, yeah, I, um--

Are you okay?

Can we get outta here?

Let's go back inside.

[solemn music]

[eerie music]

[clock ticking]

- The first step is to figure out what triggers them.

Tell me what happens.

I don't remember.

I get angry, overwhelmed,

and then I just black out.

- You don't remember anything else?

[Emma sighs]

Is it always anger?

I think so.

No.

Sometimes, I'm afraid.

Will you trust me?

Yes.

- Do you remember those pyramid food chains from school?

Millions of blades of grass from one cow,

hundreds of cows for one human.

We're all blades of grass to someone.

Alexander the Great, Genghis Khan, Ramesses the Second,

men who accomplished great feats only possible

on the backs of the nameless thousands who served them.

For most of us, our sole purpose is to serve others,

like the ant.

He works, he builds, he provides,

not for himself, but for his queen.

The masses of this world are designed

to feed the singularities.

The, the singularities?

- You, Emma, you are here because you're great,

beyond what most of us could ever dream.

You are the singularity.

I'm not here by chance.

Over a year ago, I was called into a hospital.

There had been an incident.

Over 150 people tried to kill themselves,

at exactly the same time, in exactly the same way.

My task was to interview these patients, find out why.

But none of them knew.

None of them could remember.

So I went back and I looked at those records again,

and I found out one other interesting thing from that night.

There was one patient who went missing,

[suspenseful music]

a girl who was checked in by her brother

for a drug overdose.

She was suicidal.

And I believe that she tried

to kill herself again, that night.

Now I also believe that that girl was you.

Emma [sighs], I want you to be free.

You are capable of some incredible things.

I want to talk to my brother.

- You want to talk to your brother?

Why?

He doesn't want to talk to you.

You don't know my brother.

Do you?

Do you know that he's been seeing someone?

Oh, you didn't know, did you?

You're in here, rotting,

and he's out there, moving on with his life.

Seems fair.

You're lying.

[solemn music]

[ominous music]

- Do you know why you're here, Emma?

It's because your brother has given up on you.

He's ashamed of you, and he's rejected you

by putting you into this hole.

Why do you feel so tied to him when he finds it so easy

to walk away from you?

You may need to leave.

Stop holding out on me!

[Emma grunts] [hand slaps]

[Emma gasping] Yeah, yeah.

Show yourself to me.

Stop hiding what makes you different from everyone else.

[sobs] Please leave.

[hand slaps] [Malcolm grunts]

Come on, there you are.

I know it's in there.

Show yourself to me.

[tense music]

[Emma sobbing]

You know,

if you're just gonna let them control you like this,

then I guess you're the freak that they say you are,

and this place, this is where you belong.

[Malcolm sighs]

[Emma sobbing]

[solemn music]

I'm sorry.

Hey.

I mean, it's just like you said, right,

that, right now, you're afraid.

You're angry, and nothing happened.

Nothing triggered you.

You know, everything I'm doing is for you.

Please, Emma, I need you to forgive me, please, please.

[Malcolm sighs]

[Emma sobbing]

[door rattles]

[door thuds] [ax thuds]

[Emma] Josh, Josh,

[ominous music] Josh, I don't want to be here.

I don't want to be here, I don't want to be here.

Help me, Joshua.

Help me.

Help me, Josh.

[dramatic music]

[Emma yells]

[electricity crackling]

[people groaning]

[people chattering]

[Man] Oh my God.

[Emma sobbing]

I know what's in there.

[Man] Give yourself to me.

[Josh panting]

[Josh grunts]

[door buzzes] [lock clangs]

[door thuds]

[electricity crackling]

Emma.

Emma.

[Emma gasping]

He said he's sorry.

[tense music]

[dramatic music]

Please don't do anything.

[door thuds]

[strikes thudding] [Josh grunting]

- [Malcolm groans] - Stop!

No, no!

Please don't, I'm sorry!

[Josh grunting] [Emma whispering]

[electricity crackling]

[dramatic music]

- Get out! [Malcolm groans]

- [Malcolm] No, no, no, it's not what you think.

I need to see it to understand it.

- I need to know. - No.

- [Malcolm] I need to know what her trigger is.

- No, you needed to help her, not make her worse!

- [Malcolm] No, you can't hide her, Josh.

I'm the only one trying to, ah!

[Malcolm gasping]

No, no!

Look at me!

If you talk to anyone about this,

if you try to come back, and God help me,

if I ever see you again,

[Malcolm gasps]

I will kill you.

[Malcolm sighs] [Malcolm laughs]

[Malcolm panting]

[engine revs]

I know I messed up.

But I have a plan to fix it.

I'm gonna take one last fight,

and with the money from that,

I'm gonna get Emma far away from here.

It's never been safe unless it's just the two of us.

Hi, can I help you?

Looking for an Emma Coleman.

Sorry, Emma who?

- Emma Coleman, um, I'm bringing something from her brother.

There's no Emma Coleman.

She's not here.

No, I know every patient in this facility.

There's no one by that name.

You must be in the wrong place.

Okay, thank you.

Yup.

[pager buzzing]

[dramatic music]

[suited fighter grunts]

[solemn music]

[Josh gasping]

[strikes thudding] [both grunting]

[dramatic music]

[Josh panting]

[both grunting] [strikes thudding]

[dramatic music]

[suited fighter grunts]

[Josh gasps] [suited fighter growls]

[both grunting] [strikes thudding]

[dramatic music] [energy warbling]

[both grunting] [strikes thudding]

[suited fighter gasps]

[dramatic music] [Emma whispering]

[Emma gasps] [ball clatters]

[ominous music]

[crickets chirping]

[suspenseful music]

[metal clanging]

[Amanda panting]

[static hissing]

[door creaking]

[door thuds]

[Amanda gasping]

[door buzzes] [lock clangs]

[clock ticking]

[door thuds]

It's all right.

- My name's-- - I know who you are.

[Amanda] Really?

Your brother told you about me?

No.

No, he didn't.

[ominous music]

- [Mason] How does it work between the two of you?

You sister, sister, the connection?

I have a theory.

Are you angry?

Are you afraid?

[Josh grunting]

You should be.

[Josh grunts] [Emma gasps]

- Are you-- [Emma gasping]

- [Mason] Does she feel everything

or just the pain?

[Josh panting]

How does it work?

You shouldn't be here.

[Emma] Who are you?

- I'm gonna go get some help, okay?

- [Emma] What do you want with her?

[Amanda gasping]

[solemn music]

[electricity crackling] [Amanda gasping]

I'll kill you.

[fist banging] [muffled speaking]

[electricity crackling]

- [Mason] When did it start, it start?

Was it always this way, always this way?

- [Mason] Does she feel other people's pain?

[dramatic music]

You can't keep me here, Josh.

[Mason] How does it work?

[strikes thudding] [Josh grunting]

[solemn music]

[pager buzzing]

[Josh yells]

[Mason] Enough!

[Josh gagging]

[Josh gasps] [door buzzes]

[lock clangs]

- Leave. [electricity crackling]

- Emma! [syringe zips]

No.

Em.

Emma, I can't breathe. [Emma grunts]

Let go.

[Emma wheezing]

Em, I can't breathe.

[solemn music]

[doorknob rattles]

[radio warbling]

[static hissing]

[Josh groans]

No.

[Emma yells]

[explosion roars]

[electricity crackling] [ominous music]

- Give it back! - Come and get it.

- Josh! - No way.

Give it back!

- Come and get it. - Give it back!

- Joshua, give her back the bunny now!

Joshua!

- Josh! - Give her back the bunny!

Give it back!

- [Dad] Joshua, give her back the bunny, now!

- Give it back! [horn honks]

[air bag pops] [tires squealing]

Josh.

[Dad groans]

Josh.

[somber music]

[Dad grunting]

Are you okay, buddy?

Hey, hey, look at me, look at me.

This may not make sense, right now,

but you and your sister are connected.

No matter what happens next,

I need you to protect her.

[Josh sobs]

[crickets chirping]

[phone rings]

- [Operator] 911, what is your emergency?

Hi, uh, I need help.

- [Operator] Can you explain your situation?

Uh, uh, there's a woman here.

I don't know who, she's from that mental institution,

but she's attacked several people.

I think she may have even killed someone.

- I heard screaming, and-- - Sir, what is your location?

- Uh, uh, 11 Foxline. - Sir, are you in danger?

Emma.

Emma!

Doug.

Doug!

[Doug coughing]

Wait, Amanda!

Don't touch me!

I'm calling the police.

- No, no, no, you cannot do that!

They will kill her.

Who are you?

Who are you, Josh?

You're not normal, and your sister is not normal!

All right.

Ever since I was little, I can take a hit.

And her?

She almost killed him.

She's not a bad person.

She just needs help.

That's why she's here.

I need to help her.

She's in here for her own safety.

- Her safety? - Yes.

Until I can figure out how to stop it,

I need you to leave the cops out of this.

I need you to forget what you saw.

I need you to trust me.

Just stay here until it's safe.

Josh, when you find her,

don't bring her back here.

You're lucky.

She could've killed you.

I know what it's like to want to help.

- No, I don't want anything to do with them.

- Well, at least stay until--

I'm not staying.

[suspenseful music]

[Doug] Hey, wait.

[radio crackling] [radio chattering]

[Emma] Did you come

did you come to save me?

Or did you come to take him away?

Josh!

[dramatic music]

Josh!

Amanda, behind me.

Just you and me, right?

Always.

Then who is she?

Em, don't do this here.

- Why should I care what they think?

- There's no going back if you do this.

Emma, they can't know what you can do.

What I can do?

Don't pretend you're any better than me.

- Emma, you need to listen to me.

Listen to you?

Trust you?

I've been trusting you my whole life!

[Josh gasping]

[voice whispering] And you locked me in a cage.

[Josh gasping] [voice whispering]

[dramatic music]

[Josh groans]

This isn't real.

This isn't real.

[door thuds]

Josh, help me.

[ominous music]

Help me!

[dramatic music]

[Amanda] Josh.

Amanda, I'm in here!

No, no!

Josh, what's happening?

It's just a dream.

None of this is real.

How can you be sure?

None of this is real.

It's Emma.

She's in our head, but you need to trust me.

[flesh splats] [tense music]

[Josh gasping]

[hand slapping] Wake up!

Wake up!

What have you done, Emma?

- You blame me for Dad's death, don't you?

That's why you locked me up.

- No, you tried to kill yourself.

I had to.

- But we both know that's not true.

I have a trigger.

- Emma, I need you to open this door, right now.

I don't control my episodes.

You do.

Emma, I am sorry.

You're right.

One of us does need to be locked up.

But who says it needs to be me?

[ominous music]

[Josh gasping]

It's not real.

It's not real.

None of this is real.

None of this is real.

None of this is real.

[dramatic music]

It's not real.

It's not real.

[Josh gasping]

The same four walls.

Nothing but empty promises.

I know you tried,

but I can do better.

I'm gonna give you something better than hope.

Ignorance.

You won't even know you're not free.

I'm sorry, Em.

I'm sorry I couldn't do it.

Do what?

Forgive me?

No.

Admit that I was a part of it,

this whole time.

I blamed you, because I couldn't,

I couldn't admit it.

Admit what?

You didn't kill Dad.

I did.

[dramatic music]

So that's it.

You think you can just say sorry

and forget it happened!

It doesn't work like that!

[Emma yelling]

It doesn't work like that!

Show us your hands!

[tense music]

Show us your hands, do it now!

- Ma'am, put your hands in the air.

[tense music] [wind howling]

Ma'am!

Hold it, or I will shoot!

- Nothing's happened yet, but if you do this,

we will be on the run for the rest of our lives.

You don't have to do this.

I will shoot!

- Emma, there's no going back if you do this.

- Ma'am, put your hands behind your head.

Do not take one more step.

- Emma, you need to listen to me.

No, wait! [gun bangs]

No.

No [yells]!

[energy crackles]

[solemn music]

[heartbeat thumping]

[Josh gasping]

Josh?

Josh. [Josh sighs]

- [gun clicks] - No, no, no, no!

This is not how it ends.

No, you, you were supposed to kill her.

And he would've been all angry

and would never be able to forgive you, but oh --

His rage, his rage would've made you more powerful

than any of us could ever imagine.

I mean guys, I've been more than gracious

to all of you, letting you play your parts, but now,

[ominous music] [wind whistling]

[Emma whispering]

but now, it's too late.

[tense music]

[Emma whispering] [energy warbling]

[Malcolm gasping]

- [Emma] Shoot yourself, yourself.

Shoot yourself. [Malcolm chuckles]

Shoot yourself.

- No, no! - Shoot yourself.

Goodbye, Malcolm.

[gun bangs]

[Josh] [Inaudible]

We've got to cover our tracks,

not let anyone know that you were here.

[solemn music]

Can't let anyone know what's happened.

Can't let anyone know.

Get some [mumbles]

[speech drowned out by music]

- If you could go back, would you change anything?

- Em, you did what you had to do.

No, I mean all the way back.

Would you change what happened?

[Josh sighs]

Sometimes we're forced

to make decisions people won't understand.

It doesn't make us wrong.

It's just what needs to be done.

It's gonna be different this time, though.

I promise.

It'll be different.

You're right.

It is gonna be different, this time.

[solemn music]

Emma.

Emma!

Emma, we need to go.

[match crackles]

It's better this way.

[fire roars]

[fire crackling]

[crickets chirping]

Sir, put the gun down, sir.

Sir, please put the gun down.

Put it down.

I can't.
