Man in the factory.

It starts with students.

Naturally, it starts with students, it moves into the community, and now black

working people are carrying that liberation struggle into the factory.

So there's a confrontation going on now in the office and factory between blacks

and whites that is very

sharp, and that makes the...

Makes the the issue of race Completely inescapable for the

white working person now he can go for George Wallace temporarily until he

discovers that George Wallace is against unions and George Wallace's

Is a company man who has

Completely exploited working people in Alabama and has no program for the

northern industrial working person So that that person who's used to a

union and used to job security of some kind Ultimately has no

Affinity with Wallace because Wallace will

the more he supports wallace the more wallace will bring on a crisis by

weakening unionism in the north by destroying everything that the

new deal established for these particular people so they're getting it

in that direction from the blacks and on the other hand they're getting it from

the young people agnew who's a perfect example of this kind of person says

Daddy pays the bills for college and Castro gives him the tactics.

Well, that's absolutely the case.

I have a lot of sympathy for what Agnew says because I can understand how a

working man slaves and he saves and he puts down $5,000

to put his kids through school and the kid acts as if he doesn't know where the

money came from.

doesn't understand that his father worked overtime and the kid now is

seeking the benefits of civilization that his father's labor

kind of created so you have that tremendous

crisis that has been brought on

over the last or really during the whole post-war period in which

young people who are born with the affluence no longer primarily seek money

they seek other things they seek other values and they confront the

consumer morality of their parents very directly so these people are put

under a pressure that's not going to stop from two directions from their own

kids and from the blacks and in addition there's the

pressure that's imposed by the United States having a worldwide military

commitment to suppress social revolution which costs 80 billion dollars

a year that taxation comes out of these people in the offices and the factories

and

They are not only asked to spend their money, but spend blood in fighting these

wars like the war in Vietnam, which to them are pointless. These are not wars

that are going to arouse the enthusiasm of a person in the office or in the

factory.

So he's caught in the grinding pressure of a system that eats up his tax dollars

for the purposes of policing the world.

and he's confronted at home on two sides by the blacks and by the students in a

kind of permanent set of pressures.

Now I think that it's conceivable in the short

run that the man in the office and the man in the factory will opt for order.

for counterrevolution, for suppression.

That's why it's so important that we fight back, and why the victory of

Vietnam over the United States is so important, because the lesson that you

have to teach the man in the office and the man in the factory is that

he cannot win. He cannot suppress blacks, no matter how hard he tries.

He cannot destroy the Vietnamese or the Chinese because

if he tries to it will mean his own destruction because they are capable of

winning on the military front.

And he cannot suppress or smash

his own children.

He will try.

He has a genocidal desire to wipe out people of color, and it may even come to

pass that he will want to kill his own children.

Members of a kind of decaying, declining society in the past have killed their

own sons and daughters who went into the revolution.

But we will see. That is a kind of distasteful, expensive, and bloody

alternative to pursue.

The other alternative, if we can fight and survive, becomes much more

desirable, it seems to me, to these people in the offices and the factories,

and that is to do away with the military budget and redirect

money to sort of ensuring the good life for everybody as much

as technology permits.

programmatic alternative, in fact, costs less than the present bloody

counterrevolutionary course that these people are on.

We can make this society an absolute delight for everybody, and it would cost

less than the present insane asylum that's been constructed costs.

And the problem is that

Because of racism, because of a false conception of nationalism, because of a

false conception of imperialist manhood, these people believe

that the present society is the best on earth, although it's not in their

interest. It's leading to their own destruction.

So what you have to do is challenge them to a battle.

And as they see that they cannot win the battle, I think that's the way their

conception of their own interests will change.

So you fight, and we're going to have a fight in this country. Blood is going to

run all over this country.

But you also have to have a conception of living together with your enemies,

or most of your enemies, in the future.

That's very different from the traditional idea of just kind of giving

out propaganda to workers or trying to go home and explain to your parents. I

don't think that'll work. Words will not impress them right now. The only thing

that will impress them is their failure. Their failure in Vietnam, their failure

in the ghetto, their failure in the streets and around the universities.

And the more that they see that the old system doesn't fit, doesn't work, is

failing, then the potentialities for political conversion are possible to

entertain. But first subversion, then conversion.

I think it's a question of where you choose to die.

I've stayed in prison for a long time, you see, nine years.

And in that time, I know that the officials have murdered people in

prison and that they have had people murdered.

See, I know this from my own experience.

And I know that their program now calls for taking black

revolutionaries and black militants and keeping them in prison for life. They

don't ever intend to let them out. They're throwing away the Constitution.

They're throwing away all of the laws and all of the so-called civil liberties

that people have in this country, and they're just becoming openly fascistic

in their approach.

So from my own position, I would rather die out here on the streets continuing

to register my dissent from the situation than to go down there and turn

myself in and allow them to just put me through those changes.

We began to hate filmmakers around here, you know?

Because we've had bad experiences with them.

Well,

we don't have time.

We don't have time.

I mean, we don't have the type of people who have that type of patience.

Who would want to do their shooting with cameras.

You know that.

You know that it's very easy to get.

But this cat don't want to be fucked with a camera, man.

I don't want to fuck with no cameras.

If we're going to do any shooting, the situation is so immediate that we have

to shoot with guns.

We have one guy that some film company is going to train him.

take him down and teach him how to use all that equipment.

And a couple weeks later, he got busted man with a whole car full of guns.

He wasn't relating to his specialization.

We feel that certain

things come first.

Like the black cats who already have the skills, the knowledge.

We would like to see them aware that they have no

alternative but to become members of the Black Panther Party and then to function

in that manner.

This is where we look

to. We know that eventually we will have people functioning in all these areas.

And we don't have to write it down. To keep your own language.

Yeah, we're going to have that. We're going to have everything.

We're going to get all of that, you know.

And from our point of view, you know, we're not exclusively interested in that

so that we don't feel an overwhelming urgency about that. But we do recognize

the importance of it, you know, I think.

But what you seem to say is very important.

For example, all the music people.

But getting them in there is not an easy job.

You have to deal with the mafia, you know.

We have to deal with the police before we can fuck with the mafia.

There's a literary mafia and there's a, what do you call it, visualizer. There's

a mafia involved in this fucking film, you know.

And you're part of that mafia, you know.

We'll hope to get into that.

This is part of the whole overall conception of the Ministry of

Information, that we would want to eventually get into a position to act as

the disseminator of communication in all of these areas, including

films and records and tapes.

Well,

this is what... I mean, I completely agree. This is how we relate to that

right now, you see. We agree to make this with you. I mean, I belong more or

less to the Yippies. To the Yippies, yeah.

Yeah, we understand that.

Here you are running all around the country, all around the world, you know,

and we don't have any way of maintaining any type of

machinery to see to it that things are taken care of, you know.

now it may be that uh that type of machinery is not necessary with you you

know but uh we're kind of inclined in that direction now because of all of

these gangsters uh from the american documentary documentary films um this

guy in ls named hank jones all kind of sharks and cutthroats man will be coming

over here with these cameras so that uh a lot of our cats now man they see a

camera they want to kick the cat's ass break this camera and all that so that

uh this is why uh when you started uh asking around uh about that that you ran

into a certain stone wall you see because uh we even reached the point we

didn't want to talk to the news media anymore because they come in but we'll

see how it works out let's see how we come out on this you know let's see how

you do with that

Black art, black magic, the turn of the earth, earth turn.

Blackness and blackness is the perfection of the earth turning.

Blackness is the perfection of the earth turning. Black art, black magic, the

turn of the earth, and blackness is the perfection of the earth turning.

Calling all black people, calling all black people, calling all black people,

I see, I hear, I feel the tribulation. Change,

change,

change,

change, change.

Let us change this evil system.

Change. Who else exists?

I got the message, brother.

I got you. I got the message.

police before we can fuck with the mafia.

There is a literary mafia, and there's a... What do you call it?

There's a mafia involved in a fucking film.

And we'll try that mafia.

we'll hope to get into that we even reached the point we didn't want to talk

to the news media anymore

Every people in this country are trying to condition the younger people to

take up jobs in the economy.

Condition the young people to take up jobs.

If the long sentence is clear enough in your mind

to be said again, you can say it again.

In this country, older people try to condition young people in order to get

them into the economy.

Older people.

Older people always condition young people.

Young people, young people, you see.

It has to be different each time. That's, you know, so it brings a rhythm.

Yes.

Sometimes it's nice to have your own senses, of course, so we understand you

as understand.

Yes.

does not work, but meaning.

Corporations within the government so as to perpetuate the status quo

essentially.

Older people want to perpetuate the older establishment. They want to keep

the status quo.

So they must condition the young people. Pull their wagons.

Social services need skills of manipulation.

and they depend upon the universities to, and the students in the

universities, to deliver these. I think it's time to move there.

Work with it.

Work with it.

Maybe if you want to... I'll stay in here and work with it. Yes, yes, maybe

if you want to... Let's try to do it now.

I think it's time to move there.

I think it's time to move there.

The generation gap is a new kind of class

conflict.

How can an isolated community of students and young intellectuals

have an impact on society where most of the people are working people?

How can young people have students have an impact on society where

most of the people are working people?

It's a supply line for the university. It's a supply line for the economic and

military machinery.

My name is Carol Bellamy.

Oh, I'm going to work. I work down here as a lawyer.

What are all those buildings named?

Well, we're downtown in New York City.

We're in your financial district. We're passing the chemical bank on the right,

Chase Manhattan Bank on the left, stock exchanges down the street.

Could you name some other ones?

Oh, well, most of your banks are around here.

Manufacturers have their trust across the street.

Most of your financing houses are down here, Lehman Brothers down the street.

You're right in the middle of the financial district.

How old are you?

I'm 26 years old.

Do you enjoy life today?

I think life is very exciting today.

It's very sad in many ways, but it certainly is exciting.

Do you have any dreams this night?

Well, not really, I guess.

I was thinking about the election, and that left me with no dreams for the

evening. You turn to the left now.

Okay, cut.

Cut, Ricky!

Stop.

Then, so we continue here.

In that way I can see all the buildings.

We cross again here.

Do you remember?

The second one.

And then we go to the other elevator to 235.

Take the second pass.

And you cross, and then you go to the last one, like if you were looking for

35. And then you wait before the elevator for 35.

Morning.

Were you open?

Penny is asking where you are.

We are open.

Not worried about it, just asking. I'm in charge of public relations for the

night. Yes, we went through your office. Now, what was his name?

We were supposed to have a girl with us, but we couldn't find her. We were too

early this morning.

What's his name?

Peter.

Peter.

No, no,

we'll

begin here.

Wide open. I don't know if... Maybe we can check what...

what we are doing before doing it you do that fast and then

sure and then you

use a statement and then you no no you you follow into the last one

Then you hand her with her and then... Go on.

Where are you going just now?

On which floor is this?

What will be your...

definition of wall street of a wall street girl well i think the

definition is no different from any person who works on wall street it's the

person who's interested in business

i

wanted to say about the method of the discussion

About what? The method.

It's very difficult.

It makes it very difficult to think.

Because I'm trying to think and there's an

unnatural degree of motion.

No, we speak in a more formal way.

Those who are not used, trained,

don't know it.

No, it's the the method is to make it appear natural No, I

don't mean to no, no, no, no, it's not It's totally

not that's why I prefer to show the things and because it's completely

abstract It's not at all natural.

You might even see in the film the cameras shooting It's so that everybody

would know.

I

don't

do that to feel natural, because I know to feel natural is just to do

something else.

But art is not natural.

Our interests are the same.

We show people that our interests are the same.

Our interests are the same. Yeah, you can even speak with low voice. Our

interests are the same.

You see? Our interests are the same.

You see, so we have a lot of different way of always... You can even

sing sometimes if you want.

Our interests are the same.

We were able to make allies.

We were looking past people showing that our interest was there because the

left is becoming more of a fighting force.

The left is becoming more of a fighting force.

Fighting force.

Fighting force!

How do you go on to the next?

The dynamics of the struggle for national liberation are vastly different

from the dynamics of a struggle for a revolution within a country.

So that the way that the white revolutionaries have to function, they

have to function in terms of the class struggle, or using that somehow in their

rhetoric. They have to function with that in terms of the power structure

within which they live.

But we have to understand that. At the same time, we have to understand our

separate situation.

So we need machinery that can comprehend that and move in those two directions.

analysis that the Black Panther Party made is making an analogy between the

way that the occupying army functions in a purely colonial situation where the

mother country is separated from the colony by either land or water.

Now it was very difficult at first to apply this colonial analogy

to this domestic colonial situation because the lines of conflict

the identity of the various elements of the colonial regime were not too clear.

The names were different.

We had been taught to conceive of various

branches of the apparatus in different terms, so it wasn't too clear.

But when Huey Newton studied the works of Frantz Fanon,

See, after having studied the works of Marx, Lenin, Mao and other

revolutionaries, it was not until studying the works of Frantz Fanon and

studying the Algerian situation that he was able to clearly identify the

local police departments as the counterpart to the occupying army of the

French. And it was clear from analyzing the experience in Algeria that...

The colonial regime, the colonial administration was without any power,

without any force to compel the Algerian people to submit to his dictates. But

it was because these administrators were backed up by the organized guns and the

force of the French army that the administrators were able to get away

with what they're doing.

So that in transposing that perspective to our own situation here in the black

community,

We see that the black community has also been turned into a market, that has also

been turned into a source of cheap labor, and that it has the same

three elements. It has an indigenous class, the black bourgeoisie, that works

hand in hand with the imperialists that we have to deal with.

And we cannot just deal with...

the same terminology that they use, say, to describe the situation in Algeria. We

have to talk about community imperialism or ethnic imperialism, whereby

those in the white community exercise a form of imperialism and imperialistic

control over the black community, that we have the three classes of evil, we

call them, the avaricious businessmen, the demagogic politicians.

and the strong-arm trooper, the Gestapo, the local police.

And they work hand-in-hand with the black bourgeoisie, the doctors, the

lawyers, the teachers, professional people who belong to the political

parties of the mother country and who carry out the political programs of

these mother country parties in the colony.

Well, my feeling is that you

can't separate the economic

from the social factors in the development of a country. And you've got

to have people in the business field who have a concern for progress, as well as

you have to have those interested in social progress.

I think too often there's an immediate rejection of business as an evil, and

nobody's willing to go into it and to possibly make it over in the way they

want it to be.

I think that to ignore business is like treating a man for cancer and forgetting

that he has heart disease.

In fact, I think business perhaps will play the largest role in the

development of a a new and better society in this country.

street lending money nowhere people lend money to make money

I'm 30 years old I

was in the Peace Corps in Central America and Guatemala

and I did community action work there among the

natives

I raise chickens.

I teach childcare, cooking. Now, what brought me back to the United States,

what brought me back to America, from Central America, was...

I want to get back to Wall Street because I have this very strong idea

that business is going to be the most important thing to

develop the underdeveloped countries.

And I think that we're underdeveloped right here in our country.

So I'm going to take my business techniques that I learned on Wall Street

and I'm going to develop you.

I'm going to develop the underdeveloped sections of our country, and then I'm

going to go on and I'm going to develop the rest of the underdeveloped sections

of other countries.

And today we'll develop Brooklyn, and who knows what tomorrow.

Okay.

I think you should remind them not to listen to things you said just now. They

did on publicity, on commercial, because maybe it's lies.

They don't know. So you should criticize them for what you said.

It is good, but maybe it's lies. That's the way the people are talking.

That's the way the businesses want to take it. Did you read what you read in

the papers about this school?

No.

Well, what do you believe the rest of the things you read, then?

Huh? Why?

Because they say we're militant. That's right.

What does that mean?

You mean you threaten people?

How do you threaten people?

What do they want you to do? They want you to shape up and shine up and look

right and look down and not bother anybody, not threaten anybody. Is that

for you?

That we were someone who said that they would bury him six feet under.

What? They said we should kill somebody and bury him six feet under. That's what

they said we said.

In the papers.

In the papers.

They said we ought to kill you. They said I'm going to kill you and bury you

six feet under.

Maybe that's what they want.

That's what they said we said in the papers.

They said we were humility.

That's not true. That's an illusion for the rule of the paper.

They say we ought to write.

What do you think this symbolizes?

What do you think this symbolizes, this outfit?

This uniform.

Do you know what this is?

What is it?

What is that symbolized?

Yeah, well, people are still wearing this uniform today, aren't they? Huh?

And you can tell by the sound of their voice, right?

Right.

Well, why didn't you throw something at me when I came in here and I started

talking this way?

that the other people in the community think that we're militant, so then

they'll oppose the decentralization and come to shank us aside. But we're not

militant.

Why not?

Why not?

Because. I don't think we are. I think we're just fighting for what we think

are right, but that doesn't make us militants.

Right. You see? So remember just what we're doing here.

white man's tricks and we're not going to let him do it no more.

You want this?

to put you back on the plantation.

On business?

I think, yeah, it's always business. Good business is business.

Business is making money and more money and more money makes business and

business makes more money. You got it?

Somebody comes here again. Somebody comes here. Yeah.

You make sure. I think, I think they will. I don't think I have to worry

about it. Okay.

Hey.

I'm going to come in here a minute talking about.

in talking sweet talk and talking tricks.

And when I do, we'll just see what your answer is, okay?

and that they never have any real change until the system is changed and that

they're sitting there in that school hoping for a handout are the fruits of

their own labor.

I think I implied that by the statement of I want to see how

you're getting long down on the plantation because they're still in

slave quarters.

Still penned in And it wasn't it

wasn't clear enough
