♫ Worlds away from anyone,
♫ They were burning themselves out in the sun
♫ Worlds away from anyone
♫ They were burning themselves out in the sun
♫ It was just enough to keep them far away
- [Narrator] It was the Battle of the Bands.
All of Angelus was preparing to go to war.
♫ Slay the serpent
♫ Deny the beast
♫ Slay the serpent
♫ Deny the beast
(keyboard playing)
- [Narrator] Everybody was getting into it, forming bands,
even Sandra's obsessed.
(jazzy saxophone playing)
♫ I'm gonna lock you up
♫ I'm gonna put you in a cell
(jazzy saxophone playing)
♫ We're gonna lock you up
♫ Until you learn how to spell
(jazzy saxophone playing)
♫ Incarceration, incarceration
♫ Incarceration
- Hey, this is cruel and unusual.
- Shh!
We're rehearsing.
- You're a band?
What are you called?
- The Police. - The New Police.
- Oh yeah.
- Two, three.
(xylophone playing)
- [Narrator] People of all ages were getting musical,
even my teachers.
(mumbles)
♫ And I rhyme like a model
♫ You hunt like a model
♫ I wanna see you one in the struggle
♫ A hall
- The battle of the bands on fire.
- The bowling alley is donating first prize
in the Battle of the Bands.
- $100 less expenses.
So, it's probably more like $80.
- And the winning band also gets a two week residency
at the bowling alley.
- Yes, professional acts only need apply.
- I've also heard that a famous local band
will be reforming for the occasion?
- Uh huh, the famous Hot Omelette.
- Wow.
- I've never heard of them.
We're not interested in rubbish.
I just wanted to say that.
If you're rubbish, don't enter.
- Hot Omelette broke up years ago.
Way before Rev Inc was a Rev.
- What do you mean you don't wanna
reform the Omelette?
- I can't do it.
- Me, you, Miss Archer.
The new Hot Omelette, it's that easy.
- Might be a bit of fun.
- It wouldn't be the same you know.
I'm not the same.
And without the original members,
it wouldn't be right.
It was more than the sum of its parts.
Me, Trixie, Bunny,
we were really the Hot Omelette.
- [Narrator] The beach was empty.
Everybody in the whole town was busy with band battles.
Well, almost everybody.
And now that we were all getting along,
Vicki, Josh, Mel and I
were battling to find something
all four of us could do together, as friends.
- Wow.
How good is this?
The whole beach to ourselves.
We're the only ones.
- That's because it's freezing.
- It's not that cold.
- I'm going back in.
- We'll pass.
- Right.
Maybe we should do something we can all do.
You know, together.
- [Girl] Like what?
- Maybe we could start up a band.
- What for?
- Everyone else is.
- Not me.
I'm already in a band.
It's a solo project, mostly.
- Maybe we could all join your band.
- I guess.
- What's it called?
- Sand Fish.
Girl.
- Catchy.
I like it.
(upbeat music)
- Josh!
- How good is this?
- What?
- Our first track.
- Okay, okay.
- Sing something.
- What?
- Sing something.
- We don't know how the song goes.
- Well make it up.
Na na na, na na na, na na na.
- Lockie, can you stop for a minute?
- Yeah, yeah, yeah.
What?
- This isn't working out.
We don't fit together.
- Yes we do.
Of course we do.
Everybody do stuff, we'll make this work.
- Maybe I should write some lyrics.
- Lyrics.
Yeah, and I'll help.
And Josh, you can--
- I'm working on the loop.
- I got a pen and paper here somewhere.
- I'm going back to the beach.
- Now?
- But, we're a band.
- Lockie, if you think this is gonna work out
you're kidding yourself.
See you later.
(upbeat music)
I could have stayed and fought for a place
in the band but,
it wasn't real.
Snorkelling is real.
- [Narrator] Phillip and Joe weren't into music.
They had a bigger battle on their hands.
After weeks of speculation,
it turned out there wasn't a monster
in the swamp after all.
It was Mr. Streeton.
- I was in my sack.
Just a couple of frogs.
I'm thinking of putting in an eco friendly
ornamental pond.
- [Narrator] Phillip and Joe were on a mission
to find out what Mr. Streeton was really
doing with the frogs.
(dramatic music)
(yelling)
- What are you doing here?
- We're on patrol.
- We're looking for Mr. Streeton.
- Under whose orders Corporal?
- I don't know.
Isn't that why you're out here?
- That's classified information.
Return to base.
- Huh?
- On time, both of you.
Now.
Come on, let's go.
(guitar playing)
♫ Freaky lady
- [Narrator] Egg finally talked his dad
into forming a New Omelette,
but it wasn't very hard.
(recorder playing)
(groovy music)
- Whoa, whoa.
Hang on.
- No good?
- From the start again?
- It was pretty bad.
- Remind me, why are you here again?
- Quality control.
Have some egg shell to stand
at adventures is high.
- Knock knock.
Hello!
Rock and roll!
- Trixie?
- You better believe it brother!
- Baby!
(laughing)
Hey guys.
This is Miss Trixie Jake.
- The one and only.
- From the original Hot Omelette.
Wow.
- Wow's right kid.
- This is my boy.
- Hi.
I'm Egg.
This is Asher.
And Miss Archer.
- Hi.
- Heard you were forming Hot Omelette
for the Battle of the Bands on the radio.
- You were listening?
- Oh, my roommate digs it, you know.
Everyone's banging on about that Joy chick.
I think it was you talking to her, kid?
- Yeah, that was me.
- I got straight on the bus.
I mean 100 bucks is 100 bucks, right?
- Yeah.
- Less expenses.
- Oh, let's skip the talk.
Let's rock!
Plug in that axe and hit me with three chords.
(upbeat music)
Yeah, come on, you know it.
Recorder?
Don't even think about it.
- Oh hey, the recorder's gold.
Honest.
True rock and roll.
Go with it people.
(upbeat music)
- [Narrator] Hot Omelette was back,
a lethal force.
But straight off there were casualties.
- The clash of elements,
the push and pull of creative tension.
It's the essence of rock and roll.
It's just not really my essence.
- [Narrator] Sarge always said the worst part
of the job was paperwork.
- Things get rough, I've had enough.
Put me in your cuffs, cuffs, cuffs, cuffs.
Lyrics tough.
- We saw him.
At the swamp again.
- Tough, rhymes with cuff.
- Mr. Streeton.
We saw Mr. Streeton.
- Boys, I will tell you straight,
I don't want you going in that swamp.
- We're just looking.
- The last thing I need out there
is a couple of rookies caught behind enemy lines.
Don't mess up my mission.
- But Sarge, it's all we've got.
- It's hard to conduct groundbreaking experiments
when there's a man out there in the swamp.
- We need to know what he's doing.
For the sake of science.
- Sarge, don't make me beg.
Please.
(upbeat music)
- [Narrator] Meanwhile, rehearsals were improving.
- I came to your party.
- You jumped on the table.
- Fell on the table.
It was terrifying.
- It was funny.
But that doesn't rhyme.
How about you fell on a table--
- Twisted the cable.
- Crashed to the floor.
- Came back for more.
- It works.
Josh?
Josh?
- It's sick.
- Can you turn that down?
- Don't worry about the words,
this loop is fat.
- Can you turn it off?
For one minute?
- I'm going.
- Where?
- Away from you guys.
Sound.
Image.
Process.
New sound.
New image.
I don't think they understood.
- [Narrator] And then there were two.
- School camp was cool.
- We hung out at the pool.
- We studied molecules.
- And we said, and we said there were no--
- No rules.
- We said there were no rules.
Yeah, that's awesome.
- [Narrator] Vicki and me were working
perfectly as a team again.
Just like the old days.
- It's brilliant.
- Gold.
(upbeat music)
(muffled speech)
Silver at best.
- I should find Josh.
- Yeah, you should.
- I left my computer behind.
- Stay.
You should be in the band.
- Huh?
- Don't give up on it.
Not yet.
- This is my band.
Don't ever accuse me of giving up on it.
- You walked out.
- I named this band.
- Sand Big World.
- Sand Fish Girl.
Get it right.
How can you even be in a band
if you don't know what it's called?
- We're changing the name anyway.
- To what?
- Prawn Tornado.
- Prawn Tornado?
Number one, I started this band.
Number two, I decide who's in it,
and maybe it's only meant to be a duo.
Two people as in me and Vicki.
- You left.
It's Prawn Tornado.
And yeah, maybe you're right.
Maybe it is meant to be a duo.
Tip Diamond.
- You know, I don't care what the band's called.
Or who's in it.
But I quit.
- Vicki?
- Well that was all your fault.
- Oh you're the common denominator.
Denominoid.
You're the common threat.
- You wanna take this outside?
- I thought there was chemistry.
I mean, with some of us there was chemistry.
I get along with Josh.
I get along with Lockie.
But the three of us together,
it's like together we fail chemistry.
- [Narrator] I can't imagine life as a soldier.
You go to work, people wanna hurt you.
What sort of job is that?
Yet here I was, ready to do battle with Josh.
- Why did we have to come outside?
- You have to.
Will you hand me a bat?
- You planning on hitting me?
- Yep.
- Go on then.
- Wait, why do I have to go first?
- You wanted to fight.
Just don't hit me in the ear.
- What?
- I don't wanna be hit in the ear.
- Okay.
Not in the face.
We can just say we had a fight.
- I hit you pretty hard.
- And I hit you back even harder.
- And I hit you right in the shoulder.
- And I hit you in the ear.
- Not the ear!
- Give in?
- No, I'm not giving in.
- I'll do it again, right on the ear.
- Okay, okay!
I give in.
You fight dirty.
- You have to sometimes.
Let's go get cleaned up.
- [Narrator] Phillip and Joe were back on the case.
(suspenseful tone)
- Target leaving his car, over.
- Roger that, copy that, over.
- Target last observed heading south,
southeast towards swamp, over.
- Roger that, copy that, over.
Little Popper, you still there?
- Still with you, over.
- Are you sure he went into the swamp, over?
- Confirmed, over.
- No, can't see him anywhere.
Little Popper, return to base.
(dramatic music)
- Wait up, listen.
(knocking)
Gotcha!
Red handed.
- What are you doing here?
- We'd like to ask you the same question.
- It's obvious isn't it?
This land is now for sale.
Now that the native frog population
has moved on,
the council is fully entitled to put this land
on the market.
- Native frog population?
- Yes, vanished.
Who knows where.
But I've checked.
There's not a single frog left here anymore.
- You moved them yourself.
That's what you've been doing here.
- That's a serious accusation young man.
I hope you can prove it.
Look, this is a great spot for a retirement village.
Conference centre, cinema complex,
retail precinct.
Got all lads.
- Can't we arrest him for something?
- Sorry boys.
Mr. Streeton's won this battle.
But he won't win the war.
The horror.
- That's it.
The battle.
We need to enter the Battle of the Bands.
- I thought we agreed to boycott on moral grounds.
- That was before we needed the cold hard cash.
We need it,
if we're gonna buy the swamp back.
- One small problem.
I can't play a musical instrument.
Can you?
- No, not really.
- Music can't be that different science, can it?
There must be a formula to it.
- Joe, there's a logic for everything.
(record scratching)
- Ooh yes, sounds good.
- [Narrator] Over at Egg's house the walls were shaking.
♫ Nasty freaky woman on yeah
(guitar riff)
- That was pretty cool.
- So all we can be better,
what about Freaky Mushroom?
- I forgot that one.
- Come on, fire it up, smash it out.
- I think I have to stop now.
- I'm only just getting warmed up.
- I made a quiche and some salad.
There's enough for everyone.
- Fantastic.
- We don't need to eat.
We're on a rock and roll diet.
If you know what I mean?
- Not me.
I'm having dinner.
You go put on the telly Jeffrey
and I'll go get the stable tables.
- You have dinner in front of the TV?
- The Gardening Show.
We never miss it.
- Look, we're gonna party hard.
Egg, throw your hands in the air
like you just don't care.
Rock and roll, get wild, get,
trash the place.
Grab the TV and throw it out the window.
- I have a church service in the morning.
- [Narrator] Miss Trixie was fighting a losing battle.
She left so she could party hard.
How you do that in Angelus I don't know.
(recorder playing)
- Don't let me stop you playing.
- I was just messing around.
- That sounded beautiful.
- You and Miss Trixie work well together.
- She loves her music.
- It's lucky she found you again.
- Yeah, amazing huh?
Mrs. Lennon's right here making
quite an impact out there.
You don't mind I'm playing with Trixie tomorrow?
Instead of you?
- Of course not.
Why would I?
- It's changed things a bit.
- I play because it makes me happy.
You have to do what makes you happy.
- [Narrator] Miss Archer had decided
to step aside.
She wasn't gonna fight this battle.
- Wanna go to the Battle of the Bands?
- Nope.
- But everyone else is going.
- Just like everyone else is in a band, right?
But you know what?
Maybe not everyone needs to be in a band.
You don't have to fight this one, Lockie.
- Fight?
What?
- You're fighting to prove stuff to Josh.
Prove you can be friends or whatever.
- We are friends.
Sort of.
- But you don't have to be.
You don't have to be his friend or his enemy.
Or Vicki's either.
Meanwhile, we can just go to the beach.
- [Narrator] It was at this point I realised
Josh was right.
Vicki and Josh were a duo.
And I was now a solo artist.
Well, maybe not an artist.
But really solo.
And I never belonged in Sand Fish Girl.
(psychedelic music)
- [Narrator] Just like Miss Archer
with the Old Hot Omelette.
(applauding)
- Hot Omelette won't be performing today.
(groaning)
But instead, we have a new band.
Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome Over Easy.
(cheering)
(recorder playing)
- [Narrator] Everyone said Over Easy were good,
really good.
Except for the new police.
(upbeat jazzy music)
♫ Lock set
♫ You will have to stop at the red light
♫ Slow down
♫ Stop at the red light
♫ The New Police
(upbeat jazzy music)
(applauding)
- [Narrator] Mel and I didn't make the competition.
I was tired of battling.
Thanks to Mel, I figured out all I needed
to battle from now on were waves.
- Hi, we're Phillip And Joe
and this is some of the progressive electro stuff
we've been working on.
(applauding)
(electro music)
(robotic singing)
- [Narrator] I'm not sure how it works with Phillip and Joe.
But it works.
Even Sasha was impressed.
She gave second prize to Over Easy.
Said she couldn't give first prize to Wade.
That might look unprofessional.
Phillip and Joe were pretty good though.
They deserved to win.
- We spent so much time in the studio.
It was just great to play live.
- Great to win the cash.
- Now we can focus on buying the swamp.
- With 85 bucks?
- We'll invest it.
Make it work for us.
- Cool place for a recording studio.
(upbeat music)
