So, um, what made you start writing kids' books?

Well, let's see.

Growing up, I just, I really loved escaping books.

I had kind of a crazy family life. A lot of yelling.

So I would just disappear into stories and not have to deal with it.

Somehow it stuck.

Hopefully I can do that for someone else.

Favorite book?

Oh, Goodnight Moon. When I was little.

Because my mom used to read it to me every night before the yelling.

Good Night Moon's a great book. I love that book.

Mm-hmm.

So what was all the yelling about?

My parents were great most of the time.

One too many cocktails used to kick things into high gear.

I love John, but I have to say, personally, I'm a Paul girl. You're a

So, your parents, your family, they live in L.A.?

Well, my younger sister's a model, and my older sister is a journalist.

They travel all the time, but, yeah, they're based here in L.A.

And my parents live in Florida, where I grew up.

Three girls.

And we all had to share the same room and bathroom.

That's really bad.

I have two brothers, so that was great. I had my own room and I had my own

bathroom. but they beat me up on a daily basis, so that wasn't so good. Then I

got older, and then they just tried to scare away anyone I dated.

Do they still try to scare off your dates?

Sometimes, yes.

So are they okay with the gay thing?

Yes and no.

My parents are, they're pretty cool with it.

Oh, well, I actually happen to have an uncle who's gay, so I kind of had it

built in. Yeah, so it was never a big deal, which was great, thank God.

joined a group that is starting a new free clinic here in Venice.
