I'm really, really fortunate enough

to get a full-size adult beaver.

This gives me food security.

Now more than ever, I can say I'm a hunter.

- We're gonna get moved in to this ivrulik.

I'm most afraid of never seeing my family again.

I know there are dangers on this land

and that I may never return home.

Beautiful in here.

- Things were feeling really good,

and then I decided to build this tepee.

I just feel like I've got nothing,

nothing in the tank.

The chimney's looking good.

There's just a cool, old Iñupiat song

that has a story to it too.

It puts my two younger babies to sleep every time I sing it,

so it's a really special song.

And the story is of a old man

who looks outside of his window,

and he sees a rabbit being hunted.

The rabbit comes to the old man's door and knocks.

The old man lets the rabbit inside and takes care of him.

So yeah, we'll get to work on the wood stove.

I think I spent as much time working on the chimney

as the entire shelter, to be honest.

Okay.

We lost about half the mud just walking up here.

Try to fill these holes best we can.

My shelter is working just the way as I had hoped.

It's keeping me dry, keeping me warm.

But winter is coming fast,

and the cold will come with that.

And I realize, without having a fire in my shelter,

it's not going to be warm enough

going into the cold season.

Looking great, man.

I know that, with those cold temperatures,

I need to get a way to have fire in my shelter,

to have heat.

Just have the back portion to do,

and I gotta mud that outside wall

and then put mud patties on the bottom, and it's done,

and I could get a fire going.

This is one of the first things

that makes me realize I'm really alone out here.

I can't just send a photo of my shelter to my wife.

And this can be a difficult thing to do,

living out here alone, not being able to show

the ones you love your accomplishments.

My wife, the love of my life.

I think about her every day.

So if I'm standing on the mountaintop,

and I've won this thing,

the person that is going to reveal that

I've won this "Alone" experience is her.

Making progress on the shelter.

I finished weaving the roof.

Then I put on a layer of earth.

I built the bed inside.

I need to insulate the walls

because there's a lot of holes still.

I didn't think that, going into this,

this build would take that long.

Time management has been a really big issue.

There's a lot more that still has to be done,

and it's definitely getting colder.

You know, I really kind of like being in here,

so I guess that's a good thing, eh?

The most important thing that you need

to take care of is your core temperature.

If I cannot stay warm out here,

I am seriously gambling.

I am rolling the dice.

I want to make sure that I get this right.

I still have to chink the walls,

but my shelter is in an okay enough place

that I could walk away from it for a while.

So that's good.

Fat is really what's gonna allow you to thrive out here.

I really need fish, and I need fish now.

I need fat now.

And so recently, I made a gill net.

I want to deploy the gill net.

It's taken me a while to get to this point

where I'm getting all my food systems in place.

Up to this point, I've only had hare,

but now I have to catch fish.

So if my gill net is a success

and I can get the fat from these fish,

that's what's going to allow me

to stay here for the long run.

Nature has always helped me in times of need.

Nature has always been there for me.

And right now, I know that nature

is going to have my back.

We still have fish hanging in the trees.

But I'm trying to space it out.

Right now, it should be prime time moose hunting.

And I'm just hoping for an opportunity at a moose.

The amount of food on these moose,

I can stay out here for hundreds of days.

Like, I'm feeling emotionally good.

Physically, I'll feel better with all that food.

Mentally, I'm locked in.

I'm ready to go.

If we get a moose, we win this competition.

anything on the ground to give me some kind of hope.

I'm getting worried about the food.

One of the reasons why I'm here is my friend Travis.

He was my mixed martial arts coach early on,

and then we became really good buddies

because of hunting and the outdoors.

He was like a demigod with how gritty he was

and how mentally strong he was.

He was a Canadian mixed martial arts legend--

fought Georges St-Pierre and just, like, the strongest,

toughest person I've ever met.

There's nothing on it.

[bleep].

He passed away about a year and a half ago.

We had gone on a hunting trip together.

He was rafting into one of our hunting spots

and tragically lost his life.

Losing him was unexpected.

It was tough. It still is.

I need Travis to help me out.

Put some fish on my lines.

Put a moose in front of me.

I need help here.

This is getting ridiculous.

Because there's a big log, it was going like this

like it was swimming.

I'm gonna hopefully snare this lynx so I can eat him.

It's looking grim, but I'll have to make this work.

This is all I have.

You can see there's a little bit of a trail here,

and I've seen his tracks walk right through here.

I don't like failing.

There's lots of things I've quit

and failed in my life, and I don't like it.

But right now, I don't think I'm failing.

I think there's setbacks.

I knew there was gonna be issues out here.

I just need to find the solutions.

I won't quit, but I don't want to starve, either.

And now I'm starting to think about Travis.

He made me promise him that if I got on the show,

that I would not quit.

He says, anything that's worth doing has got to be hard.

So I want to fulfill that promise I made to him.

And it gives me the extra leg I need to keep going.

We've got a couple of those out.

So if I was Mr. Lynx, I'd be walking

right through this path

and right into the net--kaboom!

It is snowing.

And it's not just a light snow.

It is snow-snow.

So I can see the animal trails, potentially.

I'm gonna go check the gill net.

On our way, I'll check out the trails.

I just did not think that I'd be getting out

my winter gear this early.

A lot of activity through here right now.

Okay, we have beaver slide.

Hmm.

It's a beaver.

It looks like I'm sharing my shoreline with a beaver.

I moved my head down to this side,

next to the fire pit,

and slept really well last night, really warm.

So this morning, I'm going out hunting for moose and tuttu.

I don't want to wind down to not having any food

and be like, crap, what do I do?

So hopefully I can add to that food cache this morning.

It snowed, but the snowfall has melted.

I'm disappointed because

tracks are more visible in the snow.

♪

It's important for me to explore this land

because I need to find moose.

I need to find tuttu, caribou, so I can harvest them,

and that can help me through the long winter ahead.

My long-term food source is going to be big game.

So I need to try and be quiet.

♪

My hunting strategy on this hike

is to find an animal walking, eating,

and be able to have a chance to harvest it.

♪

It's been weeks that I haven't seen my family.

That's a big deal to me.

Every day missed is

a day of their childhood that I'm missing.

They're only gonna be kids once.

I find myself out in nature alone a lot,

but sometimes that's just because

I need to provide meat for my family.

♪

I enjoy it, but I enjoy it more

when I'm able to teach my kids those things.

When they're out there with me,

it's, like, an amazing difference.

It's so much fun.

I'm tired.

Man, I'm tired.

I feel like I'm out there doing those things

for more than just survival because we need meat.

I'm out there to pass all this knowledge on to my children.

Gassed out and tired, so gonna be heading back.

Maybe I'll come from the top down,

What I like to do is make a loop.

and possibly a little dehydrated,

but I've never experienced either.

We're gonna put it in the pot of boiling water,

which has a grouse in it.

But we'll just leave it in for a few minutes.

Totally lost consciousness.

Felt like I was dead, I guess.

I mean, felt like I didn't exist.

Once I could see where I was, I was like, okay, I'm here.

But I didn't know where I was until I had to think about it.

It was crazy.

What scares me most about that

is my children not having a father,

missing out on events of their lives,

not being there for them.

That's important to me because I didn't have

a lot of those things, so I know how it feels.

I know that I said that

I'm willing to die to win this,

but this experience has given me a different mindset.

Winning this competition means I can spend time

with my family, as much time as I can,

by paying that mortgage off.

I might not have to work a full-time job.

Maybe I could do a part-time job

and have more time with my kids.

I just need to take care of myself better,

because I know if I do, I can win this thing.

Actually, I never really bow-hunted before,

but at least, for small game,

working quite well so far.

I caught, so far, five squirrels with a bow,

which is actually quite good.

But I wish I would be getting something bigger,

and then I wouldn't have to take so many small lives.

That's how it is.

I think about, for example, animals that eat zooplankton.

They eat, like, thousands and millions of them,

taking so many lives of small animals...

While, yeah, hunting something big, you take only one life.

But...

I don't know if you can measure stuff in this way.

Anyway, enough of philosophy.

It's time for shelter, finally.

I'm going to cut small spruce to build the frame

and dig the hole here and make A-frame over it,

so where this smoke is coming here, approximately.

My focus was just food,

and so I think I'm the last participant

who started making permanent shelter.

But now I think I'm in quite good position,

so I know I need to start working very hard

and get this done before winter really starts to come.

I'm going to make dugout type of shelter.

♪

It's actually a traditional Slavic shelter

called zemlyanka.

♪

This is A-frame, and walls are actually excavated.

So it's in the ground, pretty much.

♪

That's perfect.

In the ground, covered with tarp--

and that's one of the best protections against wind.

♪

Comparingly to digging in the soil,

you can never make walls airtight.

Especially for so cold environment,

I think this is the best way to go.

What the [bleep] is this?

Permafrost.

I thought it would be deeper here.

I'm starting to think if I should move

and look for another location.

Permafrost, it's really difficult to dig,

so that will keep my shelter cold.

They're the best and safest long-term storage that I have.

to fill this whole entire thing up.

Anyway, I'm gonna go check trap lines.

but the biggest thing was the fat.

I'm trying really hard to be able

to dry as much as possible,

just to try and make it last as long as I can.

But just with the fat alone,

there's probably 15,000 to 20,000 calories there.

There's a lot of fat.

Supplement that with the other foods that I got coming in--

There's this feeling in my body of just, like,

I won't regret letting that snowshoe hare go.

My intention isn't to come to the land

and just take as much as I can.

I really want to have

this respectful relationship with it.

The right thing was to not take that snowshoe hare.

I feel really good about that.

I am starting to realize that nature may not

always provide when you need it.

And there's going to be times where things get dark,

when things aren't going to be easy.

These decisions and choices that I have to make in hunting

is a part of our shared heritage as humans.

I don't want to remove this beaver from his home.

But at the same time, I know that

fat is an invaluable resource out here.

I have to try.

I'm not ready to give up.

But is my life worth more than his?

I don't know.

But if I can honor him and respect his life,

then I believe that he is worth taking.

Life here is really in abundance right now--

Waiting is definitely the best strategy.

If I would try to run after it and put another shot

and finish it, I'm risking to scare it.

Then this animal could run very, very far away,

and probably I wouldn't have a second chance to shoot it.

But if you let it be and it bleeds out,

it's slowly losing energy, and there are higher chances

that it would die or become so weak that

you could approach it and finish it.

So if I harvest this moose, that would definitely be

a game changer for me, because my plan was

not to shoot a moose and still last very long.

If I harvest this moose, I wouldn't have excuse

not to last very, very, very long.

That's, of course, very high potential for winning.

But of course, things can always go wrong.

or not on this peninsula anymore.

I decide to go back to the shelter.

I have no experience with moose,

because I live in a country with only red deer.

This is totally different category.

It's not a big deer.

It's huge animal.

I'm definitely not confident it won't go anywhere.

Maybe it would be dead.

Maybe it would be gone.

Maybe it would be still there.

But I want keep on checking every hour

if it's still there because it won't bring me anything.

I have to check if it's still there in the morning

and then decide what to do.

I shot this moose.
